“The early bird gets the worm” is a popular saying, but a sleepy bird isn’t going to catch many worms. While adults usually function1 well in the morning, the same can’t be said for many teenagers. It’s not necessarily their fault, though. Teenagers actually need more sleep 05

than adults, but their body tells them to stay up later. With this in mind,

some high schools in the UK and the US made their starting time later. Teachers reported that students performed better in class, and parents said that their teenagers’ mood2 improved. Another often-repeated belief is that your brain shuts down when 10

you sleep. However, the truth is that your brain remains 3 active, especially the parts of it responsible for learning and memory. In this †

case, the idiom4 “sleep on it” really makes scientific sense. Other animals’ brains are even more active than humans’ during sleep. For example, dolphins let half their brain sleep while the other half remains 15

awake. That would make it pretty difficult to sneaku up on a dolphin! While we’ve bustedu a lot of sleep myths, one belief remains true— everyone needs sleep. Quality sleep is essential5 to a healthy body and a sharp mind.

Certain foods not only make us feel happier, but also help us do better at work or school. If we choose the right foods, we can concentrate1 better. Eating protein,2 especially animal protein, helps our brain solve problems 05

better and faster. The trick, however, is to stay away from u

fatty meats. Instead, go for some turkey or chicken. To get the best effects from your food, you should also pay attention to the time you eat it. For example, eating †

whole-grain bread in the morning can keep your brain alert 10

For many of Lin’s restoration projects, the deadlines are tight. He often has to work around the clock.† Lin doesn’t mind the long hours, though, because his work gives him a special insightu into Taiwan’s past. Take his restoration 05

of the Taipei Guest House (台北賓館) for example. This impressive 1 structure was once the residence u of the Japanese Governor-General† of Taiwan. By looking at the interioru and furnishings2 of the house, Lin got a glimpse3 into the lives of Taiwan’s Japanese rulers. He noticed

10

certain European-style design elements in the building, which hint at the Japanese admiration4 of Western style at the time. For Lin, restoration isn’t just a career. It’s also a passion5 that he is proud of. He sees his work as something that will

15

survive. “When my child has grown up,” he says, “I will point to one of the historic buildings I restored and tell him that it is his dad’s handiwork.u” Historic buildings hold stories of the past in their bricks and beams. Lin Da-Wei, the Doctor of Historic Buildings, is
