Claudius convinced Laertes to put poison on his sword and challenge1 Hamlet to a fencing match. “Just scratch2 Hamlet with your blade, and the poison will kill him,” said Claudius. As a backupu plan, Claudius also poisoned a glass of wine. He would give Hamlet the deadly drink if the 05
prince won the fencing match. Claudius arranged the fencing challenge, and he and the queen were the audience. Hamlet scored the first hit but declined Claudius’s drink. The †
queen was proud of her son’s fencing, so she toasted Hamlet and drank deeply from the poisoned cup. Within moments, she was dead. 10
Distracted by his mother’s death, Hamlet was wounded by Laertes, but the poison was slow. They continued to fight and accidentally3 switched4 swords. Hamlet finally wounded Laertes with the poisoned sword. “Claudius is responsible for the queen’s death,” confessed Laertes just before dying. “He put poison in the glass.” Hamlet angrily turned
