be heard over the music that’s being played. Suddenly, performers
are flying through the air, and clowns in colorful clothes are bumping into each other and falling down. The smell of popcorn and cotton candy fills the air. Then a voice announces,2 “Ladies and gentlemen, children of all ages, welcome to the circus!” The history of circuses is actually as interesting as these big events. They began in ancient3 Rome with horse races and staged4 fights that showed the action of famous battles. The biggest, Circus Maximus,† entertainedu 250,000 people at a time. The modern circus began in the late 1700s and added trick riders, tightrope walkers, and jugglers to the mix. Traditionally, a circus is led by the ringmaster, who manages 5 the show and announces the acts. Other important parts of a circus include performing animals and their trainers, as well as people who do dangerous tricks. Finally, no circus is complete without clowns,† who make audiences laugh with their funny antics.u
