Protect Our Coast: No Offshore Drilling

DEFENDING OUR SOUTHERN COASTS

Our Southern beaches are world famous destinations and our fisheries are among the most productive in the world. For 30 years, SELC has worked to protect our coastal resources and we remain a leading voice against opening the Southeast and new areas in the eastern Gulf of Mexico to offshore drilling.

Risks of Oil Drilling In early 2015, the federal government announced it was considering opening up the Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia coasts to offshore oil and gas drilling, a significant shift in federal policy that would jeopardize the communities, jobs, and beloved beaches that are the very heart of our coastal states. The possibility of drilling off the coast galvanized locals who knew the dangers it posed to the area’s economy and environment. Altogether, more than 100 communities up and down the coast passed resolutions opposing offshore drilling and the harmful seismic testing that precedes it. In response to the incredible opposition from coastal communities, in 2016 the federal government removed the Atlantic from its offshore leasing plan, protecting all that is special about the Southeast coast.

Coastal Riches The beautiful and biologically rich Southeast coastal areas and our Gulf Coast feature some of the most beloved places in the country, including the Chesapeake Bay, the Pamlico Sound, the ACE Basin, and Mobile Bay. Our coasts attract millions of tourists, anglers, and other visitors each year. Tourism and fishing – both commercial and recreational – are the economic backbone of hundreds of communities along our coasts.

Problematic Infrastructure The environmental impacts of offshore drilling and its accompanying infrastructure and refineries onshore were

well known even before the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Ocean rigs routinely spill and leak oil‚ and sometimes blow out. Even without a major spill, the industrialization and infrastructure associated with drilling – the rigs, refineries, pipelines, traffic, and routine spills and accidents – would irreparably change our coastal communities and economies.

Seismic Testing Even though they are closely related, offshore drilling is regulated separately from seismic testing, a process of using loud airguns to test the ocean floor for fuels. So despite the recent decision to protect the Southeast from offshore drilling, the oil and gas industry continues to push seismic testing and the federal government is currently considering applications for seismic testing in the Atlantic. Seismic testing is a means to one end: offshore oil and gas development, and it is widely opposed by residents, businesses, and local governments up and down the East Coast. There is absolutely no reason to allow seismic testing, harmful on its own, when the Atlantic coast has overwhelmingly rejected offshore drilling. SELC continues to work alongside coastal communities to ensure seismic testing does not move forward.

Not Worth the Risk The South has too much to lose and too little to gain by opening up the Southeast coast and eastern Gulf to offshore oil drilling. Instead SELC advocates increased energy efficiency and development of clean, renewable energy sources like offshore wind and solar.

ow does one tell a story about a vineyard that unexpectedly grew into something far beyond the original expectations? In what way can we properly recount the memories and sacrifices of a family to be an inspiration to all, including future generations? By telling their story, from the beginning. In a small, rural town in North Carolina in the early 1970s, two brothers sat slowly rocking on their porch, pondering new ways to provide for their families. Those brothers, Dan and David Fussell Sr., decided to take a chance on growing Muscadine grapes after discovering a big city winery in New York would pay $350 for a ton of grapes. Teaming up with their father, known to all as Big D, they invested and put everything they had into building vineyards they hoped would produce the South’s sweetest grapes. Four years passed and just before the first harvest, the grape prices fell to less than half the original price. Dan and David now wondered with dismay, “what in the world are we country boys going to do with a bunch of grapes?” They decided to make wine! On The Beach 2017 33

With experimentation and determination, they taught themselves how to coax the sweet, natural flavor from the Muscadine grape. But now the brothers needed to find a way to bottle their wine and discovered the price of wine bottles was far too high for them to afford. Refusing to be discouraged, the brothers sauntered into their local hardware store in Rose Hill and headed straight for the owner. “We need a bunch a mason jars and some more sugar,” they declared. Skeptical, the owner raised an eyebrow, laughed and said “Uh-huh, and just what are you boys planning to make with sugar and mason jars?” After being reassured that both items were for their brand new winery and not for what he was implicating, they left with the needed materials.

A mere 12 miles from Myrtle Beach, Conway is a jewel of “Americana.” Conway is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina. Originally named Kingston, the town was created in 1734 as part of Royal Governor Robert Johnson’s Township Scheme. It was laid out on a riverbluff in the center of what became Horry County.

Many area residents fought in the American Revolution and small engagements were fought near Kingston. Francis Marion, who was known as the Swamp Fox, had an encampment near Kingston just across the Waccamaw River.

After the war, patriotic citizens wanted to discard the name that honored Great Britain’s King George II. The County’s name was changed to Horry (pronounced O-Ree) in honor of General Peter Horry in 1801 and a courthouse was established in Kingston. Kingston’s name was later changed to Conwayborough for General Robert Conway. 76 76 On On The The Beach Beach 2014 2017

North Strand Bald Head Island Club was designed by George Cobb and opened for play in 1974. This beautiful private golf course in North Carolina is reachable by ferry from Southport, NC. The course was recently restored by Tim Cate, who breathed new life into course, making it much more natural looking and challenging. In addition to new Miniverde greens, new bunkers and a new irrigation system, Cate transformed 35 acres of rough into sandy areas with native grasses. Ocean Ridge Plantation is home to the award-winning Big Cats Courses of Grand Strand golf. Lion’s Paw Golf Links, designed by legendary architect Willard Byrd, is a links setting where big hardwoods frame generous, rolling fairways. The Grand Strand favorite was outfitted with MiniVerde™ ultra-dwarf greens in 2010, providing a premium putting surface for years to come. Lion’s Paw has been awarded four stars by Golf Digest. Winding its way through a pristine nature preserve, Panther’s Run Golf Links is a wild and scenic ride from start to finish. Rolling fairways and deep sand bunkers lurk throughout this gorgeous championship layout and the newly installed MiniVerde greens putt fast and true. Business NC Magazine ranked Panther’s Run Golf Links 4th among all coastal region courses in their “Best Bang for the Buck” category. Tiger’s Eye Golf Links is one of Tim Cate’s greatest creations and is a regular on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses”. The G2 bentgrass greens, native grasses and wildflowers along with unique elevation changes and coquina boulder bulkheads make Tiger’s Eye a very special golf experience. Tiger’s Eye was once again ranked in the Top 10 among GOLF Magazine’s Top Public courses State by State for 2014 and the par 3 11th hole at Tiger’s Eye Golf Links was listed on the NC Golf Panel’s “Dream 18,” a fantasy layout featuring the best golf holes in the state. Leopard’s Chase Golf Club opened to rave reviews in the spring of 2007. The 7100+ yard layout features TifSport Bermuda fairways and perfectly manicured L-93 bentgrass greens. The level of detail for this spectacular layout with its natural elevations, scenic landscapes, native grasses and that beautiful white coastal sand used for the waste areas, creates a series of flowing, picturesque holes unlike anything in the area. GolfWeek Magazine ranked Leopard’s Chase #8 in NC on their list of “The Best Courses You Can Play- State by State” for 2014. The Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole Tim Cate design. The course and clubhouse were inspired by an ancient Scottish golf society called Thistle Golf Club. Documents and artifacts from the old club are on display in the clubhouse. The course features three nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. For over twenty years Oyster Bay has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach golfers. Oyster Bay is a rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. A course where variety and innovation are the name of the OnTheGreenMagazine.com

MYRTLE BEACH GOLF in a relaxed, gracious manner enticing golfers with beauty while taunting them with danger. Myrtlewood Golf Club offers golfers a choice of two 18-hole layouts conveniently located in the heart of Myrtle Beach. The Palmetto Course is a traditional design with fairways that gently twist and turn their way towards large, TifDwarf greens. The eighteenth offers a dramatic finish along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Palmetto Course was honored by Golf Magazine as the “Local’s Favorite Course”- 2005. In contrast, the PineHills Course is a modern classic designed by Arthur Hills. Contoured fairways and undulating greens provide an excellent test of golf, one you’re sure to enjoy. PineHills was honored by Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Course” in Myrtle Beach. Pine Lakes Country Club has been an icon in the Myrtle Beach golf scene since 1927, and is also referred to as “The Granddaddy.” After an extensive renovation to the golf course and clubhouse, you can now experience The Granddaddy as it was in the spirit of the 1920s. Many of the historical golf holes were maintained while twelve new holes were created to improve the golf experience that visitors have come to associate with Pine Lakes. The creation of an extraordinary, four-star design golf club, true to the classic architecture of Pine Lakes, has achieved a dynamic expansion, historical restoration and full blossoming of this prominent facility. Arrowhead Country Club is one of Myrtle Beach’s premier 27-Hole golf complexes. With a canvas of 419 Bermuda grass fairways and MiniVerde Bermuda grass greens, the team of Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have created a 27-hole masterpiece along the scenic Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead features three unique 9-hole tracts: The Waterway, The Cypress and The Lakes, each one with a feel all its own. Arrowhead is conveniently located five minutes from the Airport and within fifteen minutes of downtown Myrtle Beach. Ask about the seasonal special where you can play all 27 for the 18 hole rate! Wild Wing Plantation is home to the award-winning 18-hole Avocet Course and the 9-hole Hummingbird Course. Designed by U.S. Open and two-time PGA Champion Larry Nelson, the Avocet features unique greenside mounding, extensive fairways and green contouring, and an imaginative routing plan that includes several double fairways and a double green. The course also features exceptional MiniVerde Bermuda greens. Wild Wing was named “Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” and “South Carolina Golf Course of the Year” in 2002. Wild Wing Plantation has recently won awards from Golf Digest “Best Places to Play” (2008-2009) with a four-star course rating on both the Avocet and Hummingbird courses. Wild Wing also won a Zagat survey award for “America’s Top Golf Courses” (2009/2010). Wild Wing uses the “Single Tee” method to start players on both courses so there is no delay at the turn. Myrtle Beach National Golf Club is home to three Founders Collection Courses including: SouthCreek, West Course, and the renowned King’s North. Arnold Palmer, along with Francis Duane, designed all three layouts: King’s North, opened in 1973 and totally refurbished in 1996, was most recently honored by OnTheGreenMagazine.com

After your round, enjoy the relaxing clubhouse and outdoor patio overlooking the 10th tee while being served by the past winners of the coveted “Myrtle Beach Golf News’ Hospitality and Operational Excellence Award.” The Tournament Players Club of Myrtle Beach was designed by acclaimed architect Tom Fazio, and has been a host of the Senior Tour Championship. Enjoy perfectly groomed fairways and greens and venture forth through towering pines and expansive wetlands. TPC Myrtle Beach was awarded Five Stars by Golf Digest. It is the only course on the Grand Strand to receive such an honor. Recently the course greens were replaced with MiniVerde Ultradwarf – the same type of grass that the PGA Tour used in its renovation of the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The greenside bunkers have been refurbished with new drainage and sand. The Tradition Golf Club is a championship course that boasts the proud traditions of the great courses that have stood the test of time. Amenities abound at the Tradition, from comfortable dining to the elaborate practice facility. The Tradition was awarded four and 1/2 Stars in Golf Digest’s Places to Play 2008. Three of the South Strand’s premier layouts are Founders Collection Courses that are also near the oceanfront Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. Architect Tom Jackson built River Club Golf Course around a network of spring-fed ponds and added more than 100 bunkers, but the immaculate Champion Bermuda greens are River Club’s most outstanding feature. The semi-private Litchfield Country Club offers limited public play on its Willard Byrd designed course with plenty of doglegs and fine TifDwarf Bermuda greens. Set among the former ricefields of two historic plantations, Willbrook Plantation Golf Club is a Dan Maples creation with Champion Ultradwarf Bermuda greens that was named on Golf For Women’s “Top 50” list in 2010.
