Golf Course Renovations A renovation or a makeover can make a huge difference in the golf course business. Over time a golf course can become tired and require dealing with issues of trap erosion, green deterioration, and fairway drainage. Other times the owners may choose to do a total renovation. That requires hiring an architect and bringing in a crew to dismantle the entire course and only stay true to the routing. You saw it in the US Open courses like what Crenshaw did at Pinehurst #2 or what Reese Jones did for the PGA this year at Baltusrol. A couple of the Myrtle Beach area’s fine courses did the same thing; Bald Head Island and Shaftesbury Green. Bald Head was a total makeover as explained below by Win Stevens, a Bald Head member and former executive of Golf Digest. The makeover of Shaftesbury Glen was done mainly to solve drainage problems highlighted by the South Carolina floods of 2015. This makeover resulted in major changes to the fairways and traps thus creating a whole new look for the course.

Bald Head Island Course Was Transformed Into An Island Masterpiece

Bald Head Island Hole 16 after the renovation

Hole 16 before the renovation

10 On The Green magazine

Bald Head Island is a barrier island located about three miles offshore from the small town of Southport, NC. As the crow flies it is about equidistant between Wilmington, NC and Myrtle Beach, S.C. Access is primarily by passenger ferry and all construction materials must come www.onthegreenmagazine.com

over on a barge: every nail, piece of lumber, light bulb, etc. all the way up to heavy steel beams and construction equipment. The course architect, George Cobb, is perhaps most famous for designing the famous par three course at Augusta National.

Bald Head Island Hole 8 after the renovation The course was built on a shoestring from 1972-74. Mike Hux, who owns a landscaping business on Bald Head, was on the original clearing and construction crew and said “some weeks we had a crew of twenty, some weeks only two as the owners struggled to meet payroll.” As a result, the course was very basic in terms of rounded pushup greens and ground level tees and a few municipal-like sand greenside bunkers. It was built on a coastal barrier island which supplied the natural beauty of specimen live oaks, draped in Spanish moss, with a backdrop of wildlife including deer, fox, raccoons, osprey, bald eagles, red tail hawks, ibis, white and Great Blue Heron and many alligators. When excavating the first hole Cobb hit water very easily and said “let’s keep building lagoons” despite no lagoons sketched in his original plans. Now there is water in play on fourteen holes that, combined with the customary off- and on-shore winds of a barrier island, make for a very challenging course. The Developer operated the club for fifteen years until January 1, 2003. As a result of fifteen years of severe underspend, each hole was surrounded by dense vegetative growth and the lagoons fared no better. There was a wall of bamboo- like phragmites growing eight to ten feet high creating an impenetrable wall so first time players were unaware there were lagoons on many holes. The greens and tees over time had become much smaller and rounded and the sand bunkers were “muni-like.” The greens turf was the original Tifdwarf Bermuda grass nearing twice its estimated life expectancy. The antiquated hydraulic irrigation system, thought to be the last in the state of NC, was constantly breaking down and leaking extensively. A group of members headed by Win Stevens, who had recently

Hole 8 before the renovation moved to Bald Head, stated “this course holds great promise, in good measure because of its location, and needs to be cleaned up restored and modernized as little has been done other than ‘let it go to seed’ since 1974.” Win was a thirty-plus year member at Winged Foot Golf Club and a Golf Digest senior executive. After persistent lobbying and persuasion beginning in 2001 the renovation process was begun. Like many old courses that suffered from neglect, the original Cobb plans were lost until discovered in his attic by the first BHI Club Head Professional, Tom Plankers. The comparison of what was drawn by Cobb and what was actually built was saddening with many elements omitted due to the limited initial budget. Stevens, now Chairman of the Greens Committee, and club board member shared the original Cobb plans with some on the board until consensus was reached to bring in an architect and construction company to determine what it would take to rebuild Cobb’s original dream to modern day standards.

Bald Head Island Hole 13 after the renovation Stevens took the relatively new Club GM, Robert Norton, (very knowledgeable TPC alumni who built several courses and oversaw over a dozen of TPC’s best) to visit several of highly regarded local architect Tim Cate’s nearby courses. Norton was impressed and we recommended, and the board agreed, to start “next steps” with the architect and unofficial construction partner of Cate’s, Shapemaster, Jeffrey Stein. The renovation was a difficult sell to the board of governors who appropriately stipulated approval was subject to member buy-in. So, we had Cate sketch his vision of two holes, which were given to a local artist who painted both holes. The paintings were framed and put on easels in the clubhouse entrance for member viewing who said “let’s get going.” Still the board was cautious given it was 2007, the middle of the recession, when most clubs were cutting back. Significantly most companies in the golf business were looking for work and several million dollars could be saved by executing the project soon. The board finally gave approval and allocated funds to build the first hole to Cate’s vision. After playing the newly renovated hole the members gave unanimous approval and the board approved the project.

Hole 13 before the renovation During the fall of 2009 Shapemaster, under Tim’s watchful daily oversight, began shaping each hole and in the spring of 2010 the trucks started rolling from S. Carolina to the barge landing at Deep Point Marina in Southport laden with huge rolls of greens, tee and fairway sod for delivery to Bald Head. Below are highlights of Tim’s modification to the course.

While the above was going on we were quietly testing three types of greens turf for over two years on our sub-soil utilizing our higher salinity water. The test was successful and we ultimately chose Mini-Verde. Mini-Verde was the recently installed ultra-dwarf at the Tournament Players Club after the TPC first tested it in New Orleans.

• Cobb’s hole routing was unchanged

Given we could not shut down the course in the middle of “the summer season” - also the grass growing season - we grew the mini-Verde, utilizing Bald Head Island subsoil, Celebration tee grass and 419 Bermuda fairway grass during the late summer to early spring 2009-10 in Camden, S. Carolina on a turf farm.

• Ten fairway landing areas were widened to make water hazards more visible to eliminate “blind” tee shots toward water

• Eight holes were altered to make them more playable or strategic

Bald Head Island Hole 14 after the renovation • Two double-tier greens were built as shown on the original Cobb plans but not built • Several Cobb greens with insufficient depth or too much slope were modified • Collection areas adjacent to greens were built and mowed tight eliminating Bermuda rough • Faster green speeds demanded by modern players were achieved due to new turf grass (Mini Verde) • A state of the art irrigation system was installed • 12 lagoons were enlarged and reshaped bringing them closer to greens, three had bulkheads added • Several new bridges and laser leveled new tees 10 to 12 ft. high were built

Renovations At

Shaftesbury Glen A Problem Becomes An Opportunity!

By Amanda Himmelsbach

Left to right, holes 13, 12, and 2 after the renovation Inspired by world-famous courses like Winged Foot and Augusta National, architect Clyde Johnston designed a traditional British Isles course at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club, located on the banks of South Carolina’s beautiful Waccamaw River. Shaftesbury Glen was named 2009 Golf Course of the Year by Myrtle Beach area golf course owners. Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club, located west of Myrtle Beach, S.C., reopened on March 12, 2016 after being closed for two months for extensive renovations to the 18-hole golf course due to historic flooding that occurred throughout South Carolina in the fall of 2015. The restored course now has a new look, which is greatly enhanced by new waste areas and redesigned bunkers, in addition to new senior tees, mounding to enhance the visual appeal on five holes, and opened-up approaches to the greens on eight holes for easier playability.

Holes 12 and 13 after the renovation

In October 2015, the entire state of S.C. experienced what is now known as the, “one-thousand year flood.” President Obama named Horry County, where Shaftesbury Glen is located, and other counties in S.C. disaster areas as more than 24-inches of rain fell in many parts of the state. “The result of the two month renovation is nothing short of a miracle,” said Paul Himmelsbach, one of the owners of Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club. “We not only repaired the damage but also managed to enhance the look and dimension of the course by placing waste areas, used for drainage, in visually impactful areas. In doing so, we now have a course that, even with extremely wet conditions, will allow golf carts to access both sides of the fairways, providing golfers with just short walks to their balls. More importantly, especially for senior players, they will be back on the cart paths only a day or two after a heavy rain.” As the silver lining in this saga, the new renovations at Shaftesbury Glen Golf & Fish Club have ensured that Shaftesbury will remain one of the top courses in the entire Myrtle Beach area.

Holes 12 and 13 before the renovation

“The enhancements we made are reminiscent of those that Ben Crenshaw and his team made to Pinehurst #2 before the 2014 US Open,” said Himmelsbach. “We’re looking forward to hearing the reactions of golfers who’ve enjoyed the course in the past when they return to play it again. We’ve been able to reintroduce the course with new features that make it a better test of golf and a more enjoyable layout.”

The Surf Golf and Beach Club

By Tom Prough

The Surf Golf and Beach Club is the third oldest course on the Grand Strand, having been opened for play in 1960. The Parkland Style course was designed by noted architect, George Cobb with a redesign done in 1996 by John Lafoy. The 18 hole golf course is lined with massive live oak trees and water will come into play on eleven holes, ending with the spectacular Par 3 eighteenth hole. The greens were replaced in August and September of 2016 with Champion Bermuda Grass with moderate to severe sloping coming into play on every green.

16 On The Green magazine

The clubhouse underwent a significant renovation in the winter and spring of 2016 with beautifully designed Golfer’s Grill, Men and Ladies Locker Rooms and sitting areas and a beautiful 2500 square foot golf shop. Lunch and dinner on the patio overlooking the fabled 18th green is reason enough to become a member of the strand’s most prestigious country club.

The Best Of

Glen Dornoch Waterway Golf Links

Myrtle Beach

Established in the fall of 2012, The Best of Myrtle Beach Golf Group consists of 15 award-winning golf courses along the Grand Strand from Shallotte, North Carolina to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. This remarkable group of courses includes five “Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses in America.” With an abundance of marsh front and Intracoastal Waterway holes, you will experience the unique coastal vistas and charm that the region is renowned for. For dramatic beauty and world class playability, there is no finer selection of golf courses than those listed below. The Thistle

Arrowhead

Barefoot - Norman Course

THE THISTLE The Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole Tim Cate design. The course and clubhouse were inspired by an ancient Scottish golf society called Thistle Golf Club. Documents and artifacts from the old club are on display in the clubhouse. The course features three nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. ARROWHEAD GOLF COURSE South Carolina’s “1998 Golf Course of the Year.” Designers Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have sculpted Arrowhead’s 27-hole complex into three aesthetic masterpieces. The Lakes, features dramatically sloping fairways and strategically placed water hazards; The Cypress, gently traces the outskirts of a pristine Carolina hardwood wetland; and The Waterway wide fairways with dramatic holes along the high bluffs of the Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead is located in Myrtle Beach just five minutes from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. BAREFOOT RESORT In the fall of 2014 the Golf Channel deemed the Barefoot Resort & Golf location as the “perfect fit” for their hit reality TV show “Big Break” because of their central location, infrastructure, quality of product and history. With the Dye Course, Pete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever. Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this visually stunning design is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name.

Barefoot - Dye Course

The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is routed through a spectacular piece of property in the heart of Barefoot Resort. Like many European courses, the course does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes. It is not a British links course, but rather a classic Lowcountry course, filled with live oaks, pines, sand, natural areas and native grasses. A Carolina native, Davis Love III embraces a tradition of Lowcountry character in his latest design. The Love Course incorporates the recreated ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7. Wide open fairways and generous landing areas set the stage for an unforgettable round of golf.

Barefoot - Fazio Course 18 On The Green magazine

The Norman Course, Greg Norman’s newest design at Barefoot Resort is unique in many ways. With only 60 acres of mowable grass existing on all 18 holes, Greg uses stunning waste areas and the site’s natural vegetation to frame each hole. The course resembles one found in the deserts of the southwest, without the desert. www.onthegreenmagazine.com

GLENS GROUP Myrtle Beach’s most talked about course, Glen Dornoch is a masterful tribute to the legendary Donald Ross, in a spectacular setting of centuries old live oaks, marsh and Intracoastal Waterway views. Here each hole seems to have been crafted by nature rather than by man. And the three finishing holes are among the world’s best. Discover for yourself why Golf Digest chose Heather Glen as 1987’s #1 new public course, and names it again and again as among the country’s best. The course’s 27 holes are even lovelier in maturity, its setting is truly spectacular, and the 19th Century clubhouse echoes its Scottish tradition. Architect Clyde Johnston brings back the traditional look at Shaftsbury Glen. You will think of Winged Foot as you play the newest of Myrtle Beach’s championship courses. This beautiful, recently renovated course should be on your must-play list. It’s just 10 minutes from Restaurant Row via Highway 22. Possum Trot is a long respected venue rated “Friendliest course on the strand” where the guest is #1. Spacious fairways and awesome Par 5’s make for a golfing experience as good as it gets. Warm up on the area’s most complete golf training center. CALEDONIA Built upon the former site of a working southern rice plantation, Caledonia has been recognized for its design and incredible beauty. Caledonia was recently ranked #27 in GOLF Magazine’s 2014 “Top 100 You Can Play” and is annually ranked on “America’s 100 Greatest Public courses” list by Golf Digest. The 6,526-yard, par-70 course has been described as having “18 signature holes” with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams.

TRUE BLUE PLANTATION Ranked in Golf Magazine’s “2014 Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list, True Blue Golf Club represents the class of the expansive golf offerings in and around Myrtle Beach. The dramatic, fun layout is known for its vast fairways, undulating greens and impressive elevation changes. The rolling terrain and native vegetation of this once thriving indigo and rice plantation makes for one of the most spectacular settings in golf. PRESTWICK COUNTRY CLUB Dense forests of pine are paired with sandy waste areas for a contrast of perfection at Prestwick Country Club. Creating elevations with dune-like berms, stairway bunkers and deep bulkhead protected greens meant moving over 1.3 million cubic yards of earth, but the end product was well-worth it in the end. Streams wander between the holes surrounded by framing lakes and generous landing areas in this Dye masterpiece. BLACKMOOR This spectacular undulating design takes advantage of the natural terrain and beautiful vistas making it a most enjoyable place to play. The design is one that stretches the imagination – almost begging for the untraditional at times. Designer Gary Player was able to use his wisdom and talent to provide a challenging course for the most capable golfer as well as high-handicappers. TIDEWATER GOLF CLUB Nestled like a sleeping giant between the Intracoastal Waterway and Cherry Grove, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Seamlessly marrying the game to its surroundings, architect Ken Tomlinson evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of many Grand Strand golfers.

Founders Group International Your Ambassador to the Grand Strand Golf Experience

It’s a contemporary approach in the Myrtle Beach golf scene – but one that blends its top courses with a consumer appeal that has been decades in the making. It embodies what you’ve come to like most about golfing the Grand Strand over the years, and takes it to a whole new level. And it’s offered by Founders Group International - the proud owner and operator of 22 of Myrtle Beach’s most requested designs. FGI made its initial splash in 2014 with its acquisition of eight renowned courses – including TPC Myrtle Beach, host of the 2000 Senior Tour Championship, and the Grand Strand’s only design rated 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play”; and World Tour Golf Links, 2004 recipient of “Course of the Year” honors by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and a visiting golfer’s paradise that pays homage to many of the world’s most renowned golf holes and venues. TPC Myrtle Beach and World Tour were joined by Aberdeen Country Club, Burning Ridge Golf Club, Colonial Charters Golf Club, Founders Club at Pawleys Island, Indian Wells Golf Club and River Hills Golf & Country Club.

But as quickly as FGI emerged with these eight designs, its “gamechanging” moment came in 2015 when it reached agreement with National Golf Management to acquire the Myrtle Beach golf industry’s most established group of courses, loyalty programs and reservation services. They operated for years under the popular “Prime Times Signature Courses” brand, and are now rolled in FGI’s emerging Founders Collection portfolio that includes: • King’s North – the most renowned of three Arnold Palmer designs at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club that also includes West Course and SouthCreek, and all of which have been a staple of the Grand Strand golf scene for more than four decades • Pine Lakes Country Club – “The Granddaddy,” Myrtle Beach’s firstever golf club founded in 1927 by the legendary Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America • Grande Dunes Resort Club – Honored in 2001 as “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and most recently a co-host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship. These five stalwarts came with nine additional designs formerly owned or operated by National Golf Management, including Litchfield Country Club, Long Bay Club, Myrtlewood Golf Club’s Palmetto and PineHills courses, Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club, River Club, Tradition Club, Wild Wing Plantation and Willbrook Plantation.

Altogether, the Founders Collection spotlights signature designs from the likes of industry legends Jack Nicklaus (Long Bay, Pawleys Plantation), Arnold Palmer (Myrtle Beach National) and Tom Fazio (TPC Myrtle Beach) … 14 recipients of four or more stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” … and local, statewide and national “Golf Course of the Year” accolades among many of its courses. The Founders Collection courses are now the featured courses of the Prime Times Signature Card, a loyalty program that for years has rewarded regular players of its courses with the Grand Strand’s lowest available rates – in addition to complimentary rounds earned with frequent play. They’re also part of a premium loyalty program (the Prime Times Honors Club) that takes this premise even higher by adding an array of country club-level benefits. And the Founders Collection is just the starting point in FGI’s ability to offer the visiting golfer easy, unparalleled access to the best rates for more than 70 golf courses throughout the Grand Strand. Whether you’re seeking a last-minute tee time or planning a multiround golf getaway for your group, FGI’s resources include a phone reservation center, Tee Time Central, that’s open 7 days a week – along with popular Web sites at MBN.com and MyrtleBeachGolfTrips.com that give you easy, 24/7 access online. Golf Media Pioneer Kelly Tilghman, Developer Edward Burroughs Enshrined into Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame Developer Edward Burroughs and Kelly Tilghman, a trailblazer for women in golf media, were inducted into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Pine Lakes Country Club in September of 2016. Established to pay tribute to the men and women who have played significant roles in the development of the Myrtle Beach area golf industry, the Hall of Fame was founded in 2009. “Edward Burroughs and Kelly Tilghman are two of the most prominent personalities in Myrtle Beach golf history,” said Bill Golden, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s president. “While both have contributed to the area in different ways, they were and are among the titans in their chosen fields.”

Edward Burroughs and Buck Waters, both grandsons of Edward Burroughs, accept the award for the inductee.

Kathryn Tilghman accepts the award for her daughter Kelly Tilghman.

Edward Burroughs

Kelly Tilghman

Burroughs hails from one of the most significant families in Myrtle Beach’s history, and his unerring vision and leadership were instrumental to the area’s growth throughout the 20th century. Burroughs was the guiding force behind decisions that led to the donation of land that is now Myrtle Beach State Park, helped found Coastal Carolina University, and was vital to the development of Highway 17 Bypass.

One of the most decorated junior golfers in Grand Strand history, the game has been a vital part of Tilghman’s life. She lived on the third hole at the Surf Club, one of the area’s most venerable layouts, and her family owned Gator Hole Golf Club, where Tilghman worked every job imaginable and honed a game that earned her a scholarship to Duke University.

This Grand Strand giant was also essential to Myrtle Beach’s emergence as an international golf destination. He sold land to the Dunes Club, allowing for the construction of Myrtle Beach’s most iconic layout, but he is most renowned for his development of Myrtlewood Golf Club.

Upon graduation from Duke, she played professionally across the globe for four years before retiring to take a position with the then upstart Golf Channel. Tilghman’s stature grew along with the network’s, and she went on to become the first full-time female play-by-play broadcaster in American sports history when she led PGA Tour coverage on Golf Channel.

The area’s first 36-hole facility, Myrtlewood was located in the middle of town and helped jump start Myrtle Beach’s transformation from sleepy beach community to acclaimed golf destination.

Her play-by-play work eventually extended to NBC’s coverage of the 2012 London Olympics, but Tilghman has carved out a hall of fame career - in Myrtle Beach and beyond - as a result of her work in golf. While her star rose nationally, Tilghman continued to maintain ties to the Grand Strand. Over the years, she has returned to the area on numerous occasions, along with Golf Channel’s cameras, to highlight the work of the Myrtle Beach Chapter of the First Tee. Myrtle Beach is known as the Golf Capital of the World. Part of the reason for that is the fact that there are over a hundred golf courses located in a 60-mile stretch of coastline known as the Grand Strand. You can play a different course every day for three months and still have new courses to look forward to. Another reason for that label is that here you can find some of the highest quality golf courses in the

country. Golf Digest recently named several of the beach’s courses to the “Top 100 Public Courses in America” list for the 2016 season. Thirty-six of the area’s courses hold a rank of four and a half stars or higher. Throw in nationally-known golf schools, top-quality practice facilities, restaurants and nightlife and it’s obvious why we’re the Golf Capital of the World!

North Strand Cape Fear National is a premium daily fee golf course designed by Tim Cate. Located in the Brunswick Forest community just 5.7 miles south of downtown Wilmington, the course opened to rave reviews in April, 2010. The course layout is visually stunning and intertwined with preserved wetlands and scenic lakes. Over 1.5 million cubic yards of earth was moved to create the dramatic berms, elevated tees, meandering fairways, and sculpted features throughout the course. The landscape includes 1,500 feet of bridges, three waterfalls, beach bunkers that run into ponds, and retaining walls made from huge boulders. Cape Fear National is the northernmost course on the Grand Strand and is well worth the trip. Carolina National Golf Club is a 27-hole Fred Couples signature golf facility set along the Lockwood Folly River. Winding through rich low country terrain, the course offers an endless variety of playing experiences. It has been awarded HHHH 1/2 stars by Golf Digest, which calls it one of the finest courses on the eastern seaboard. The course was designed to accommodate all skill levels through its innovative design and multiple tee placements. Just over 7,000 yards from the tips, the course will challenge the accomplished golfer, yet five sets of strategically placed tees offer an equally challenging test to golfers of all abilities. Rivers Edge Golf Club & Plantation in Shallotte is home to an extraordinary Arnold Palmer Signature Course. In 2007 Golf Digest

ranked this course 62nd among “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” and GolfWeek counts it among its “Top 10 in North Carolina.” The spectacular layout features excellent Bentgrass greens, dramatic waterfront vistas and seven holes on high bluffs overlooking the pristine Shallotte River. nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. Thistle is ranked #1 Golf Course by www.mbgolfinsider.com and rated 4 and a half Stars by Golf Digest. Thistle is located between the Myrtle Beach (20 miles) and Wilmington (40 miles) airports. For over twenty years Oyster Bay has been a favorite of Myrtle Beach golfers. Oyster Bay is a rare, harmonious blend of the penal, heroic and strategic philosophies of golf course architecture. A course where variety and innovation are the name of the game. Golf Digest has repeatedly rated Oyster Bay HHHH 1/2 stars and ranked it the “Best New Resort Course of the Year.” The clubhouse has been renovated and upgraded to enhance guests’ experience. The wide, links-style fairways at Farmstead Golf Links gently follow the lay of the land to create a collection of shot-making opportunities that reward superior play from golfers of many styles. At this captivating course, the winds are always in play, giving it yet another dimension. Whether the flags are noisily flapping or eerily still, hitting it straight is the key to 4:42 PM scoring well at Farmstead. It may be wide open with generous landing areas, but scoot one off a fairway and you are stuck in the love grass, where your next move is to drop a provisional. And as your round comes to a close, the only hole in 2 states, the legendary 767-yard, par 6 finishing hole unfolds over a half-mile of beautifully manicured turf to offer a final test of your skills. Respected architect Willard Byrd put his personal stamp on Meadowlands Golf Club with distinctive parkland features that follow the lay of the land through mature woods bordered by serene meadows, pristine lakes and vast wetlands. Spacious, gently sloping fairways offer a surprising variety of elevation changes that present a multitude of challenges as they open onto large, immaculately manicured greens. Five sets of tees, an open layout, well defined hazards and exemplary attention to detail create a rewarding round for everyone who comes ready to play. The fairways of this 18hole course make their way through a picturesque, heavily-wooded terrain but its rolling hills, unusual for a coastal course, are River Hills’ signature feature. The course was nominated as “Best New Course” in 1989 by Golf Digest and recently underwent a $2 million renovation. Colonial Charters Golf & Country Club re-opened in August 2013. After an extensive renovation project to the 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, this facility has been restored to the quality conditions for which it was acclaimed during the ‘90s. Colonial Charters features a number of memorable holes defined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed water hazards. The 6,427-yard layout features two iconic green-side waterfalls, and the tree-lined fairways reward golfers that are accurate off the tee. 48 On The Green magazine

Two additional Prime Times Signature Courses are located in the North Strand area. The Palmetto Course was honored by Golf Magazine as the “Local’s Favorite Course”- 2005. In contrast, the PineHills Course is a modern classic designed by Arthur Hills. Contoured fairways and undulating greens provide an excellent test of golf, one you’re sure to enjoy. PineHills was honored by Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Course” in Myrtle Beach.

Grande Dunes Resort Club an extensive renovation to the golf course and clubhouse, you can now experience The Granddaddy as it was in the spirit of the 1920s. Many of the historical golf holes were maintained while 12 new holes were created to improve the golf experience that visitors have come to associate with Pine Lakes. The creation of an extraordinary, fourstar design golf club, true to the classic architecture of Pine Lakes, has achieved a dynamic expansion, historical restoration and full blossoming of this prominent facility. Wild Wing Plantation is home to the award winning 18-hole Avocet Course and the 9-hole Hummingbird Course. Designed by U.S. Open and two-time PGA Champion Larry Nelson, the Avocet features unique greenside mounding, extensive fairways and green contouring, and an imaginative routing plan that includes several double fairways and a double green. Golfers have many choices to make when they 50 On The Green magazine

play the Avocet Course. The course also features exceptional MiniVerde Bermuda greens. Wild Wing was named “Myrtle Beach Golf Course of the Year” and “South Carolina Golf Course of the Year” in 2002. Wild Wing Plantation has recently won awards from Golf Digest “Best Places to Play” (2008-2009) with a four-star course rating on both the Avocet and Hummingbird courses. Wild Wing also won a Zagat survey award for “America’s Top Golf

Wild Wing is being redeveloped into a first-class residential neighborhood with great amenities including golf, tennis, boating, swimming, and a club atmosphere. The golf course is available for public and resort play and is offered by all the leading area golf packagers.

LONG BAY Set just outside the heart of Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Golf Club blends the feel of East and West Coast play, starting with the environment designed by The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus. Dogwoods, pines and maples sit along the course as crystal-blue streams cut through several holes. Beyond the course’s enchantment, players must navigate a variety of bunker styles, shallow greens and considerable elevation changes. It’s clear Nicklaus wasn’t intending Long Bay to be a relative walk in the park – even if at times that’s exactly where you believe you are. CLUB UP!!! Nathan McDonough has been teaching golf for over ten years. Nathan was the teaching professional at Burning Ridge Golf Club for four years before joining the staff at the SC Golf Center. Over the last several years, Nathan has obtained invaluable insight about golf instruction and the techniques required to help players compete at a high level by shadowing many of the top instructors in the game including Craig Harmon, Hugh Royer III and Nick Bradley. Nathan has derived his teaching philosophy from his experiences and is passionate about instructing golfers at the amateur, high school, collegiate, and professional levels. As one of the top young instructors in the game, Nathan will help you reach your goals and get you playing your best.

On approach shots the majority of amateurs come up short leaving them with a long putt or a tough up-and-down. The reason for this is that most golfers don’t take enough club. Therefore they come up short of the green most of the time.

6 6 7

Photo A: Diagram of shots missed short to a green

Now, you’ve put a lot of pressure on your short game and end up drawing a lot of boxes and double-boxes on your scorecard as a result… Combine this strategy with aiming for the center of the green instead of the flag and you can help mistakeproof your game. As your mistakes disappear, so will the strokes, and you’ll find your handicap getting smaller by the round! Remember, golf is a game of misses. Make the most out of your misses by clubbing up!

If you hit your 7-iron 150 yards and find yourself with 150 yards to the green, club up and grab a 6-iron. More times than not we don’t flush each shot and even a minor mis-hit can end up several yards short. By choosing a longer club, the ball will carry further and allow you to still end up fairly close to the pin despite your less-than perfect shot.

Photo C: 150 Yard Marker with 6-iron This takes a lot of the sting out of your bad swing, because your result is still decent, which helps you forget that bad shot and keep your round going. Finally, if you just so happen to flush the ball such that it goes over the green, at least you can have the satisfaction of saying, “wow, I really hit that one flush”, which is a positive thought that will help you get up and down from wherever you end up. WORLD AMATEUR HANDICAP CHAMPIONSHIP

More than 3,000 players from 25+ nations again descended on the Grand Strand for the 33rd annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, enjoying golf’s greatest amateur event and the good times that come with it. The “Every Man’s Major,” as the tournament is often called, was contested on 50 of Myrtle Beach’s best courses, including Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, Love Course at Barefoot Resort, Grande Dunes Resort Course and Heritage Club. A 72-hole, net stroke play event, the World Am flighted players into six divisions and 64 flights based on age, gender and handicap. At the heart of the World Am’s competitive success is the game’s best and most aggressively enforced handicap monitoring system, which levels the playing field for all participants. “What I most enjoy is the quality of golf courses and I enjoy the competitiveness and the people in my flight,” said Marv Houghton, a long-time player from Fayetteville, N.C. “I feel like we get flighted with the correct people and it makes it a very even, a very competitive event.” 62 On The Green magazine

As important as the golf is, it’s only half the fun at the World Am. Each night players gather at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center for the festivities at the “World’s Largest 19th Hole,” a 120,000-squarefoot golf extravaganza. Players enjoy free food and drinks, live entertainment, a golf expo and celebrity guests, among many other activities. Joining golfers at this year’s tournament were television analyst Charlie Rymer, PGA Tour champion Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey, and national radio hosts Brian Katrek and John Maginnes. “I come every year,” said Carlos Mato, a New Yorker who played in the event 16 times. “It’s a great time and the people are great.” The 34th annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship will be played August 28 - September 1, 2017. Box and One Putting Drill On The Green Golf Lesson

Missing on Purpose Can Make You Better!

I teach 3 major components to putting. Each one is equally important. To hole any putt, you need to be able to start the ball on your intended line, control the speed, and know where it’s going to break. When I diagnose a putting stroke, the issue always leads back to one of these three things. Most golfers that struggle with putting tend to make it too complicated and mechanical. On top of that they add too much pressure to themselves, have high expectations, and are afraid. Good putters keep it simple, stick to a solid routine and work off of a plan that they commit to every time.

If you miss the first 4 balls a consistent distance from the hole you will form a box around the hole. On the last ball you will feel a little extra pressure which simulates real golf or tournament golf. The drill helps you work on line, speed, and reading the putt. It also takes pressure off the first 4 balls because you are trying to miss.

If you have success from 10 feet, move back to a longer starting distance. If you have trouble, move closer. This is a great exercise to do before a round especially if you’re playing a course for the first time.

Here is a good drill called “Box and One.” Take 5 balls to the putting green and start at about 10 feet from the cup. The objective is to miss the hole on the first 4 balls and make the 5th. That’s right! I said the objective is to miss the first 4. Here is how it’s done.

Ball #1 –

Miss the putt long and to the right

Ball #2 –

Miss the putt long and to the left

Ball #3 –

Miss the putt short and to the right

Ball #4 –

Miss the putt short and to the left

MYRTLE BEACH

GOLF PACKAGES

After a long week of work or chasing the kids around the house, you find yourself settling in behind your computer, or browsing the net on your new smart phone. The golden terms “Myrtle Beach Golf Trip” seemingly type themselves into your search engine. You are instantaneously flooded with a seemingly endless array of page after page of options and information. Whether you are a first time trip planner, or a veteran of countless Myrtle Beach golf campaigns, organizing a trip to the Golf Capital of the World, can be a time-consuming and challenging task. It should instead be a fun prelude to a trip full of memories and great stories. Using my years of experience of setting up Myrtle Beach golf packages for a living, I am going to share with you my 3 best tips to making your next golf trip to the Grand Strand your best one yet. Tip #1: Choose Your Travel Dates Myrtle Beach features four distinct seasons, each with its own pluses and minuses. Here is my breakdown of each season, along with a tip for each one:

An Insiders Guide to Organizing Your Myrtle Beach Golf Trip Winter – The winter season runs from Thanksgiving until the first week of March. The good news during this timeframe is that both the golf and lodging prices are at the lowest mark of the calendar year. The bad news is that that the weather is very unpredictable, and it gets dark prior to 5:00 PM, so two rounds in a day is seemingly tough to bag. My advice-The end of February is a great time for a golf trip, if you don’t mind playing with a little fire. The prices are fantastic, and your odds of decent weather are on the plus side of the 50/50 line. Spring – The spring season is busiest part of the Myrtle Beach golf year, and is the highest demand. This frame runs from the second week of March until the end of May. The good news is that the weather is usually perfect Download our mobile “app” on page 22

(especially for folks who still have snow on their front lawns), and course conditions are beginning to thrive. The town itself is not inundated with visitors yet, restaurants are eager for business, and lodging rates are still very reasonable. The bad news is that because of the high demand for tee times, the golf rates are at the highest points for the year. My advice-Work in conjunction with a packager to find a “family” of courses. When you book multiple rounds within the same course ownership or management group- you are going to get the best prices as well as the most incentive values (such as free lunches, replays, gift cards). Summer – Myrtle Beach was founded as a summertime destination, but the beach tended to overshadow the golf courses. That has changed in the last several years, as more and more golfers are now taking advantage of the great summer deals. The good news is that the golf deals are fantastic, even if you only have time for one round. The weather is picture-perfect, though midday can get on the hot side (especially in July and August). The bad news On The Green magazine 67

The North end of town and south end of town are both very similar. They do not feature the high-rise oceanfront hotels and resorts, but instead offer onsite golf course condos and townhomes. These areas are perfect for groups who are looking less at the after golf entertainment options, and more for a golf and then relax theme. There are numerous dining options on both ends, specifically the Murrells Inlet waterfront to the south, and the Calabash (NC) area to the north.

is that because of the high demand, room rates are at their highest marks of the year. Traffic is also at a peak, but with new roads and routes around town, this is no longer a major issue in town. My advice-Early morning tee times are the best in the summer, as they not only “beat the heat,” but also get you back in time to rejoin the family on the beach by lunchtime. Late afternoon is also a great time to play in the summer, because darkness does not fall until around 9:00 PM, and many courses offer Twilight rates, often less than $25. For the lodging, great deals can be found with non-oceanfront lodging, such as condos located on many of the Strand’s courses. Fall – We finally arrive at the author’s favorite season. Despite the fear factor the Weather Channel desperately tries to instill in everyone regarding the hurricane season, fall is the best balance of all the previously mentioned seasons. The good news is that during these months you would experience the nicest and most consistent weather, the best combination of pricing on both rooms and golf, and getting around town is a breeze, and everything is still open. The bad news is that it begins to get darker and colder towards the middle of October, and there is that chance of tropical storms and “canes” making landfall. My advice-September, September, September. This is the best time all year to make your golf pilgrimage to Myrtle Mecca. The weather is a pleasant mix of summer/spring, you 68 On The Green magazine

have the maximum number of hours of daylight per day, golf prices are still low (especially during the first two weeks of the month), and room rates have begun to creep down from their summer highs. The best time to make the trip is the first week of September, for two main reasons. The first is that the World Amateur Golf Championship is held during the last week of August, which the majority of courses in town host. All of the maintenance staffs work very hard to have the courses in pristine playing condition, so your trip would come on the heels of the best conditions many courses offer all year. The second benefit of a trip during this date range is having the Labor Day holiday built in, which allows for an extra possible day for the trip. Tip #2: North vs. South vs. Middle Myrtle Beach is a collection of small towns that range down the Atlantic Ocean coastline. If you drove the entire length of the greater area of Myrtle, you would be in your car for well over an hour. To save yourself from wasting time driving to courses, and to maximize your time on the links, it is best to pick a locale. Whether it be in the North Myrtle Beach/Brunswick county area to the north, the heart of town in central Myrtle Beach, or in the Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet section towards the South-there are enough courses in each to build several diverse golf package options. www.onthegreenmagazine.com

The middle of town is geared more towards the guests looking to stay on the ocean, and who are looking to take advantage of the local attractions and nightlife. One advantage of staying in central Myrtle Beach, is that you would have the option not only to play the central courses, you would also be able to travel north or south to play those tracks as well. Tip #3: How much do I want to spend? While this seems like an obvious question, anyone in a sales background will tell you not to show your hand until you are called upon, this is the most important information you can share. With the number of course in Myrtle Beach, multiplied by the number of possible golf lineups – yes, some boundary needs to be set. If you can inform your golf packager what the maximum budget per person is at the beginning of your quotation process, this will speed everything up for you, and enable your package representative to put together the best options that will fall into your price range. We hope these tips help you in your Myrtle Beach golf planning experience. If you have any questions, contact any of the golf package providers you see in this magazine. They will be eager to help.

On The Green Golf Lesson

Keep Your Head Down if You Want To Hit Bad Shots “Keep your head down!” As golfers we have all heard that before, probably more times than you can count. This is the most common offered advice given from one weekend warrior to another. It usually comes from our playing companion immediately after that dreaded topped tee shot. The problem with this advice is, it’s almost always bad advice! In theory, keeping your head down while you swing sounds like reasonable advice. However, keeping your head down leads to topped shots, chunked shots, hooks, slices, and the vast majority of bodily injuries sustained by a golfers. When a golfer restricts their head from rotating with their core, the strain this lack of

movement creates will inevitably lead to lower back, left knee and/or neck pain. The reason keeping your head down causes these pains and poor shots is due to the rapid deceleration of the core through impact and the over rotation of the arms to compensate for the deceleration of the core. When the arms and core rotate separately from one another the knees/back/neck are left to support the majority of left over energy created from the swing. So instead of transferring that energy into the golf ball and hitting it further and straighter, by keeping your head down you actually injure yourself and hit a poor golf shot in the process. Now to be clear I’m not saying lift your head up while you swing,

I’m simply saying let your head rotate naturally with your core through to the finish. Let’s take a look at some pictures for further clarification. Imagine if you will you were going to throw something very heavy from a golf setup. In pictures 1 and 2 I’ll be using a medicine ball. When you swing the medicine ball it is very easy to feel the difference between turning your head with your core and keeping your head down through the swing because of its added weight. When you swing the ball while keeping your head down (picture 1) you will feel how off balance you become. When your head stays down your spine tilts

backward away from the target as your arms release through. These conflicting movements through the hitting area what cause inconsistent shots to occur due to the disconnect of arms from the core. Also, pay close attention to how much strain my lower back and neck is forced to take with the tilt of my spine as well as how my left knee is supporting all the rotation of my arms.

my head staying down all that is left to strike the golf ball is my arms and hands. With this much forced rotation of the arms due to a lack of core rotation my timing will have to be perfect in order not to hit a bad golf shot. This type of move is very common for a lot of golfers both high and low handicaps but it is also the major cause of inconsistency at all levels.

Now if you make the same swing but allow your head to rotate naturally through with your chest and core (picture 2) and don’t keep it down past impact you will feel many positive differences. First, you will immediately feel how easy it is to maintain your balance even with a heavy medicine ball. When you don’t keep your head down your arms never separate from your core and everything rotates through to the finish together. Secondly, you won’t feel the normal pinch of the lower back or strain of the neck/knee that occurs when you keep your head down.

Finally, lets look at how the club should be swung. When you release your head with your core through the swing (picture 4), you can see how much simpler it is to accomplish. Everything has rotated through the swing as one and no energy is wasted maintaining my balance or slapping at the ball. Since everything is turning together as one, my club face remains square throughout the swing and my arms do not have to separate from my body in order to do so. This type of move is what leads to consistent golf shots and a pain free swing!

So now let’s look at how this translates when we swing with a golf club. When you keep your head down and swing the golf club (picture 3) you can see how much rotation my arms have been forced to do. Since my body is stalled by

To recap, DO NOT keep your head down unless you want your chiropractor visits and golf score to go up.

In Memorium A Man Called Marvin I recently lost a dear and close friend and the community lost a leader. Marvin Arnsdorff and I go way back, since he was the manager of Golf Digest’s Atlanta office. We collaborated early on because he believed in my ability and let me sell, with his help, advertising sections for Myrtle Beach in Golf Digest. It was a huge success for both my fledgling publishing company and for Golf Digest. We made a great team.

~ Paul Himmelsbach ~

When he was in the area he stayed with Judy and I. We even had a bedroom that we called Marvin’s room. Together, in a bar in Atlanta, we created the World Amateur Golf Championship for Myrtle Beach, which some thirtythree years later is still going strong and brings millions of dollars and a tremendous amount of prestige to the Grand Strand every year. Marvin, Wilma, Judy and I became great friends. We vacationed together, played golf together. His daughter Tamatha worked for us for a summer, life was good, and our friendship grew, as did our accomplishments. I built Heather Glen, Glen Dornoch and my publishing and advertising companies flourished. His position with Golf Digest grew as well with his expertise in the travel and resort business leading all categories for the magazine. Then he had a heart attack, a quadruple by pass and two months later we were in Ireland playing golf. Two years later he decided to retire, Judy and I made a decision to build Shaftesbury. We were looking for partners. My brother Jack was already part of my team, my lifetime friend and college roommate Scott Gobbi was aboard. I asked Marvin

90 On The Green magazine

if he wanted to round out the team. He said yes and the rest is history. He and Wilma moved to Myrtle Beach. Marvin headed up the real estate division and we created the communities that we now know as Shaftesbury. Marvin loved golf, as did Wilma, and you could see him almost daily on the golf range honing his skills. Life was good. Tamatha, her husband Ray, and their children moved to Shaftesbury much to the delight of Marvin and Wilma. He was a proud and caring grandfather, always a loving husband, a caring neighbor, a lover of the community he helped build and an amazing friend to Judy and myself.

Then his heart valve began having problems. It hit him hard, he fought back, tried to find a solution, never quit, but in the end that and other complications took my dear friend, our neighbor, and community leader from us. I will never let a day pass when I look out at the driving range or the putting green that I won’t see my dear friend practicing to get better at a game he loved. He was amazing and all that knew, loved, and respected him will miss him. My dear buddy Marvin Arnsdorff, who now is shooting birdies on God’s Heavenly Links, looking down on all of us, especially his beloved Wilma, Tamatha, Ray, Marvin Jr., Wendy, his grand children, and loving brother. Until we meet again pal, hit them straight. Your friend and partner, Paul

In Memorium Crit Gore A Pioneer In Myrtle Beach Golf. ~ Paul Himmelsbach ~

Heather Glen Golf Links I lost my partner in Heather Glen & Glen Dornoch, Crit Gore. I met Crit in 1984. He was introduced to me by General Jim Hackler when I was in the midst of working out a deal with Colonel Vereen to lease the property that would become Heather Glen. I was a new guy in the community publishing On The Green and On The Beach magazines and I knew nothing about the golf course business. When it came to financing and running a golf course I knew zero and didn’t know were to turn. Crit and Jim Hackler embraced me, helped get the financing and together we built Heather Glen. We named Crit the president of Heather Glen and managing partner. He did a great job - it was named “Best New Course” by Golf Digest in 1987. Under his leadership Heather Glen became a huge winner. My brother Jack, Crit and I built Glen Dornoch, a beautiful course on the Intracoastal waterway. Crit’s son George was part of our team and together we created

the Glens Group which included Possum Trot, Shaftesbury Glen Golf and Fish Club, and the beautiful accommodations at Village at The Glens. Crit was everything you would expect in a partner - honest, smart, hard working, a stand up guy with great principles. His involvement in the community as President of the Golf Course Owners Association, Dunes Club president, and Golf Holiday board member showed his leadership and community-minded spirit. He was a terrific husband to his dear wife Ruth as well as a wonderful father and grandfather. I also considered him my dear friend, always there with advice, suggestions and solutions to business problems. We both were inducted into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame, an honor I never would have received without the guidance of Crit Gore & Jim Hackler. I will miss my friend and partner Crit, as will his family, friends and the Myrtle Beach community.

Criteria for the S.C. course owners employee award includes professionalism, integrity and outstanding service; exceptional quality of work and results; contribution and involvement in the local and state community; and significant contribution to the game/industry.

Litchfield Country Club Course of the Year Litchfield Country Club has been named the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association Course of the Year, a richly deserved honor for a layout that continues to be one of the area’s most popular. Litchfield Country Club has always earned high marks as a shot-maker’s course that requires keen course management and challenges players to use every club in his or her bag. The MBAGCOA evaluates Golf Course of the Year nominees on four criteria: exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community, and significant contribution to the game. By virtue of winning the award, Litchfield is a candidate for state and potentially national honors. While the South Strand has grown up around Litchfield, the Willard Byrd design has more than stood the test of time, delivering an experience that highlights the area’s lowcountry beauty and the virtues of classic golf course architecture. Litchfield is owned and operated by Founders Group International.

Eagle Nest to Become the Longest Course in SC Eagle Nest Golf Club owner Rick Elliott believes the bombers in the game should be catered to and they’ll soon be challenged at his course like nowhere else in South Carolina. Elliott wants to have the longest course in the state. New back tee boxes are being added to most holes at the Little River layout, and soon the 44-year-old Gene Hamm design should be approximately 7,900 yards. About 1,000 yards are being added to the current length of 6,901 yards, though the course can now measure more than 7,000 yards when the back tee boxes are fully extended. “Everybody keeps saying shorten things up and make things more narrow. I think the opposite,” Elliott said. “There’s an opportunity at Eagle Nest to push it to around 8,000 yards. We feel we can add a lot of distance to the golf course and make it a true championship layout. The new golfer wants to play a championship course and distance is important.” The new tips will be called the “Perch Tees” and will be constructed to resemble eagle’s nests with elevation and ornamental grasses.

Four Myrtle Beach Golf Courses on Golf Magazine’s List of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play Golf Magazine unveiled its biennial list of America’s “Top 100 You Can Play,” a ranking of the nation’s best public courses, and four area Myrtle Beach Golf Courses, including two of the nation’s top 40, earned a spot on the coveted list. A Lowcountry classic, Caledonia Golf & Fish Club led the way at no. 29, followed by the Dunes Club at no. 39, True Blue at no. 77, and Barefoot Resort’s Love Course was no. 85. Caledonia, a Mike Strantz design, has long been a favorite of the Golf Magazine ratings panel. The layout, routed along a stunning piece of property, is equal parts art and architecture. Strantz carved a masterpiece between soaring live oak trees draped in Spanish moss and alligator-filled, lowcountry water that used to feed thriving rice plantations. The Dunes Club, a consensus top 100 public course, is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. masterpiece. With uncommon elevation change, arguably the state’s best greens complexes, and Jones’ architectural genius, the Dunes Club is the most revered Myrtle Beach golf course. The layout, which hosted the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship, is anchored by Alligator Alley – holes 11 through 13 – which play along the swash from the nearby Atlantic Ocean and Lake Singleton.True Blue, also a Strantz design and Caledonia’s sister course, deservedly retained its spot on the list. Everything about this 7,126-yard monster is big, including the fairways, greens and waste bunkers. Golf Magazine said of True Blue, “Hole to hole, the variety is astounding. The course is mostly open, with beauty and menace mingling with lakes, marshland and plenty of scrub-filled natural sandy areas … Rarely has golf architecture had a shaper as artful as Strantz. The full measure of his formidable skill is on display at True Blue.” When Barefoot initially opened its fairways, some skeptics wondered if Davis Love III would be capable of crafting a course that was equal to more highly regarded architects Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Greg Norman, who also designed courses at Barefoot. With its generous landing areas, creative layout, and Donald Ross-inspired greens complexes, the Love Course is among the most popular Myrtle Beach golf courses and playable layouts.

Upgrades at The Legends The Legends Golf Resort has a completely renovated restaurant and bar in the main clubhouse. There is also a new cart fleet, upgraded pro shop, a brand new private lounge – this to go along with the spring additions like brand new bathrooms, snack bar, and upgraded resort items such as high thread count linens and towels in the villas, large flat screen TVs, and hardwood floors in most villas.

Changes at The Thistle Chad Wiebelhaus is now the Head Golf Professional at The Thistle. The Thistle recently completed a 27 hole greens renovation project. The bent grass greens have been replaced with TifEagle Ultra Dwarf Bermuda and they are PERFECT! Thistle has also added a Ladies/Junior tee box with TEAL colored tees. They are forward tees that they call a “Pace of Play” tee box. Thistle now has 6 tee box options for guests.

Improvements at Sandpiper Bay Sandpiper Bay has completely redone all the bunkers at the 27 hole facility. They also removed 29 bunkers that were not essential to the design or playability of the holes, and put new sand and new drainage on the remaining 61. They also cut down over 500 pine trees that were shading the greens or uprooting the cart paths. The Piper paths have been repaved. The Mini Verde greens continue to be the best on-course feature - and the most important part of the golf experience for guests. Download our mobile “app” on page 22
