We have all been there at some point in our lives, and that sinking feeling has set in before. My golf bag did not make it, put a fork in me. All of the pre-trip bets and back and forth with my buddies, without my clubsI don’t stand a chance. Thankfully in these new advanced days and time, there is a solution now to this problem. Shipping your golf clubs to Myrtle Beach is now a very easy and viable option. While we are still waiting for Amazon to get into the golf club shipping business, there is a very simple (and affordable) option for you to consider for your next trip. Ship Sticks The folks at Ship Sticks began their company in 2011 out of West Palm Beach Florida. The concept began
simply enough, and through growth and use of advanced technology, the business has grown to produce a revenue of over 3.9 million dollars. So this is not a small start-up company, they are experts and produce an efficient service to their customers. The Process: 1. Schedule Your Shipment: The Ship Sticks website (www.shipsticks.com) is very simple and well organized. Just register for a new account (if you are a first time user) or login if you are a repeat customer. You specify your pick-up and delivery locations and specific dates. They will be able to pick up your clubs anywhere, whether from your home, office, home club, or that shed in your backyard. You also have the option to drop your clubs off at any local carrier’s store as well. 2. Print And Attach Your Bar-Coded Labels: Once you complete the online paperwork, you will be directed to a confirmation page, from which you can print your all of your labels. You would have the ability to print them again at any point from your confirmation email you will receive. Just attach your outbound label, and keep the return label for later use. 3. Pack Your Bag: This one really is probably the most difficult part, at least in my case. Would definitely recommend a golf travel bag, preferably one K i n gwith ’ s a hard exterior.

If you have opted to drop off the clubs yourself, the website provides locations to all the available locations for drop off in your area. 5. Tracking Your Clubs: Ship Sticks allows you to track the location and progress of your shipment, just follow the link from your emailed confirmation, and you will find all status reports. 6. Clubs Have Arrived: You can relax when the confirmation email hits your inbox, notifying you that your clubs have arrived safely at their destination. 7. Coming Home: You would simply repeat the same process as mentioned above with your return labels and can send them home from your last course. The entire process is very simple and affordable, and the customer support is top notch. Just think how much easier the trip will be, whether is lugging the clubs to the airport, or trying to decided how you are going to fit 8 guys in a rented mini-van with clubs. Now you don’t have to worry about those challenges, and will have some extra spending money in your pocket.

If group members arrive at different times, or even different days, having a rooming list eliminates any confusion on both sides. Figuring out who snores, and who doesn’t want to room with Bob…..that is the tough part.”

UNDERSTANDING COURSE RULES AND POLICIES You learn something new about golf every time you play. We have compiled a list of some of the golf terms and policies common in the Myrtle Beach area, and wanted to share these with you. Double Tee:
This is a very common tee sheet model employed by a large number of courses in Myrtle Beach. If you have asked for a 10:30 AM tee time in April, you may have had this policy explained to you already. A double tee is a tee off procedure where the golf course sends groups off holes #1 and #10 simultaneously. So for example, at 8:00 AM a group will tee off hole #1 and also hole #10. This procedure is used to maximize the number of tee times for the most requested time frame (7:30-9:30 AM). Group will tee off for generally around a two and a half hour time frame. So when that time frame ends (let’s say 9:30 AM is the last morning tee time), then the course has to close new tee offs until all of the morning groups have made the turn. They will then resume the afternoon tee times in the same manner. Some courses have recently eliminated use of this model, which allows them to offer mid-morning tee times, and courses with 27 holes may have also late morning tee times as well.
Raincheck:
If Mother Nature decides to throw some rain at you, don’t fret. If you have a round that is rained out, the course will issue you a raincheck. This raincheck can be used for a future round, please put it in a zip lock bag and keep it somewhere safe. This raincheck can be put to good use for your next trip, and will lower your costs.
Replays:
You just shot your best score ever, your pulse is rapid, and you are hungry to play more than the 18 holes you just finished. All the courses in the Myrtle Beach area, offer discounted rates to go back out in the afternoon and play 9 or 18 more “replay” holes. You don’t have to get in your car, and most of the time you can keep your clubs right in the same golf cart. If you are interested in replaying at a course, we recommend 22 On The Green Magazine
speaking to the pro shop staff prior to your AM round, and they will be able to provide you with a price, as well as time of availability. Some courses and packages include free or discounted replays which can be booked in advance as part of your package. Other properties which have multiple courses on the same property, will have discounted rates to play one of its other courses in the afternoon as well.
Bag Drop:
When you enter a course property in the Myrtle Beach area, you will see signs directing you to the bag drop area. This is the unloading area for vehicles to pull up to, and where the bag drop attendant will unload your clubs prior to putting them on a cart. It is important to use this area, so that the outside course staff can keep your group’s bags together, put drivers and riders together, and keep the tee times on their scheduled mark. Remember to take good care of your bag drop guys; they can be a valuable asset to you with regards to course tips or nightlife recommendations.
Aerification:
The word aeration stimulates negative emotions for many golfers. Aeration is an essential program to keep playing surfaces healthy and in good condition. Aeration primarily is performed to control organic matter – i.e., decaying roots and grass stems – relieve soil compaction, stimulate root growth and improve drainage. If organic matter becomes too thick, it acts like a sponge and holds water at the surface after rain or irrigation. Excessive organic matter also inhibits root growth, reduces oxygen levels in the soil, encourages disease and eventually can lead to turf failure. Furthermore, excessive organic matter creates soft surfaces prone to ball marks, foot printing and inconsistent playing conditions. Aeration and topdressing are the most effective ways to control organic matter and maintain smooth, firm putting surfaces. www.onthegreenmagazine.com
In Myrtle Beach, check with your packager if you are planning a trip in late May or June or early July. Most courses will aerify at that time of year, but your packager will be able to advise you to the status of each course. Some courses will also plan a small tyne (small holes) aerifcation in late August or early September.
Overseeding:
Bermuda grass is king in Myrtle Beach. Overseeding is done when a golf course’s main grass (Bermuda) in the fairways, tee boxes, and greens is about to go into its dormant stage. When Bermuda goes dormant, it turns to a brown color. The actual overseeding process involves putting out seeds of rye grass (which is tolerant to colder weather) onto the course. The seeds must be watered In order to germinate and grow, which may result in cart path restrictions at the golf courses. When the temperature begins to hit the lows 60’s (usually in October), that is the time to overseed. Bermuda grass stops growing in its dormant stage, and therefore will not heal if damaged. Golf cart limitations will be put in place for an extended period of time when overseeding is in practice. This is for more than one reason. First, the dormant Bermuda grass cannot heal if damaged, and second, the course will be wet from all of the water that is required for the overseed to take. Some courses in Myrtle Beach will overseed the entire course whereas others will overseed only fairways and tee boxes. Bent grass greens do not need to be overseeded as they are a cool season grass. Some courses elect not to overseed the rough as it gives the course some nice definition. Again, check with your golf packager, who can provide detailed information on the courses.

Virginian Curtis Henley Wins 34th Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship

Curtis Henley of Poquoson, Va. shot a gross 82, good for a net 66, to win the World Championship Playoff at the 34th Annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship Friday at Barefoot Resort’s Dye Club.
Each flight played a different course every day and after four rounds of competition, all flight winners and ties advanced to the World Championship Playoff at the Dye Club. The playoff was an 18-hole shootout to crown the event’s winner.
Henley edged James Dupont of Meadville, Pa. and Charlotte’s Jim Acord, who each shot net 67s. Hilton Head’s Wes Long fired a sizzling 68 to win the Gross Division and finish five rounds with a cumulative, gross score of 1-under par.
While the competition is initially what lures players to the tournament, it’s only part of what keeps them coming back. At the heart of the World Am’s appeal is the camaraderie among its participants, and much of that kinship is fostered at “The World’sLargest 19th Hole.”
Making his first appearance in the event, Carl Myers of Dallas, Texas won the Senior Gross Division in a sudden death playoff against Kim Mansfield of High Point, N.C. Myers won on the first sudden death playoff hole with a par. Virginians Ted Hartung and Thomas “Duke“ Wagner won the International Pairs competition and, along with it, a trip to St. Andrews, Scotland to represent the United States in the IP World Championship in 2018. A 72-hole, net stroke play tournament, the World Am was played on more than 50 of Myrtle Beach’s best golf courses. Players from 49 states and 20 countries competed in the event, which was open to all men and women 18 years of age and older, and players were flighted based on age, gender and handicap.
Each night of the event, the 19th Hole overtook all 120,000 square feet of the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, providing participants with free food and drinks, live entertainment, celebrity guest appearances, a golf expo and more. Among the big names that appeared at the 19th Hole this year were Golf Channel personalities Charlie Rymer, Damon Hack and Chantel McCabe, billiards legend Ewa Laurance and Paige Spiranac, one of the game’s fastest-rising personalities. Players also received a gift bag that included a logoed hat, shirt, PGA Tour Superstore gift card, Nexbelt, and an assortment of other goodies. The Year In Review-10 Things that happened in Myrtle Beach in 2017
screens. The new restaurant will feature a full-service menu along with daily drink specials. Little River’s Aberdeen Country Club was named in honor of the Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, Scotland’s sixth oldest golf course. The new logo design features a dragon, a mythical figure that often represents the primal forces of nature. In Celtic and other mythologies around the world, the dragon is recognized as a controller of water, the very element that impacted Aberdeen last October.
#1 New Greens:
Tiger’s Eye completed their greens renovation project this September, converting to TifEagle Bermuda grass. This is the same type of grass found at the TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship. The project began on July 23rd, and was completed in timely fashion, reopening on September 22nd. “We’re thrilled that this revitalization is complete, and that our members and guests can resume playing top-level golf,” said Mark Saunders of Ocean Ridge Plantation Golf. Play the 3 other Big Cat Courses (Leopard Chase, Lion’s Paw and Panthers Run), and you can play Tigers Eye for free as part of their great package. Arcadian Shores has installed new Sunday Bermuda greens, in addition to cart path upgrades and the construction of a brand new 3,500 square foot clubhouse. This project was completed in September. Crow Creek is now the home of brand new G7 bent grass greens, after replacing their L93 greens. This G7 variety is more tolerant to the heat of the South Carolina weather. Crow Creek reopened on October 2nd to wide acclaim.
#2 Course Renovations
The Parkland Course at the Legend Resort completed a three month bunker renovation in September. The project included the removal of nearly one third of the 110 bunkers on the course. This move was made to increase the playability of the course, and has been very popular among the local community. This improvement, along with the facelift that the Double Eagle Tavern received last year (adding over 14 televisions and new and improved seating options), and the new fleet of Yamaha golf carts brought in, show that the Legends is committed to providing great value to its customers. Aberdeen Country Club reopened on March 29, after being closed for several months for a major renovation project. Aberdeen Country Club is adjacent to the protected Waccamaw riverfront preserve and loops around scenic wetlands and creeks with towering cypress trees. Like several other facilities along the Grand Strand, the Aberdeen nines and their clubhouse sustained damage in October 2016 from Hurricane Matthew when heavy rains and unprecedented flooding occurred throughout the Carolinas. Faced with the need to make repairs, the course ownership decided to invest not only in course and clubhouse restoration, but to make some design changes, update Aberdeen’s clubhouse and create a new sports bar-style restaurant that has multiple TV screens. The 4,000 square foot clubhouse has been redesigned as a sports-bar style restaurant with four large television

4. TopGolf Is Coming to Myrtle Beach
On June 15th, the Myrtle Beach Community Appearance Board welcomed TopGolf to the city. TopGolf, a sports entertainment community, features golf games for all ages as well as climate-controlled bays, bars and TV viewing areas. Located across from Broadway at the Beach at Grissom Parkway and 29th Ave. North, the 38,382-squarefoot building will be made up of three floors which will include various driving ranges, a restaurant and outdoor patios, offering a place where people can go rain or shine.
5. Golf Digest Major Accolades
June’ s issue of Golf Digest included its biennial rankings of the Top 100 golf courses in America, and this year’s list included two of Myrtle Beach’s best. A Robert Trent Jones, Sr, design, the Dunes Golf & Beach Club is No. 54 in the biennial rankings while Caledonia Golf & Fish Club, the late Mike Strantz’s first solo design, is No. 86. Dunes Club, which opened in 1948, is the Myrtle Beach’s area’s most famed layout. Starting with a clubhouse that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, the Dunes Club delivers a special experience. The classically designed course plays over naturally rolling land and offers stunning visuals throughout. The layout’s most popular stretch is Alligator Alley - holes 11 through 13 - capped by the par 5 13th, a 90-degree dogleg right that plays around Lake Singleton. The course has hosted some of professional golf’s most prominent events, including the U.S. Women’s Open, six Senior PGA Tour Championships, and,

most recently, the PGA Professional National Championship. Caledonia, which plays amidst centuries old live oak trees draped in Spanish moss, is a modern design carved from a piece of land that oozes history and Southern charm. From the moment players enter the property through a half-mile stretch of road lined on both sides by oak trees, the beauty of Caledonia is evident. On a course full of memorable holes, the 18th stands above as one of the best finishing holes in all of golf. The multi-tiered green rests in the shadow of an antebellum style clubhouse and requires a forced carry over water.
6. Golfweek Names 11 Courses to “Best You Can Play” in NC and SC
The May issue of Golfweek brought further recognition to the Myrtle Beach area. 11 local courses were named to the “Best You Can Play” list for both North and South Carolina. Representing North Carolina was the Bald Head Island Club and Leopards Chase. South Carolina’s list included The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, Caledonia, True Blue, Legends Moorland Course, Tidewater, TPC Myrtle Beach, King’s North, The Heritage Club and the Barefoot Dye Course.
7. Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame Welcomes Two New Members
One man involved in both ends of the Myrtle Beach package business during the initial burgeoning period for the area golf industry, and another largely responsible for the survival and success of the largest single-site amateur tournament in the world will comprise the 2017 class for the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame. Hotelier and golf course owner Vernon Brake and the late Bob LeComte, who helped save and grow the Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, were inducted at 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 in the Hall of Fame Garden at Pine Lakes Country Club. Brake has been an owner of The Breakers hotel for 47 years, was among the original partners of the Myrtle Beach National Company and Arrowhead Country Club, and has served on the boards of several area organizations. Lecomte convinced DuPont executives to sponsor the World Am in 1986 and the title sponsorship lasted for two decades. He served as the tournament’s executive director for 13 years and moved to the Grand Strand for the final 22 years of his life. LeComte died in June 2014 at the age of 83 after battling lung cancer for two years.
8. New Flights to Myrtle Beach
Spirit Airlines announced in April the addition of several new direct flights to the area. Included were Niagara Falls (NY)/Toronto (CA), Plattsburgh (NY)/Montreal (CA), Akron/Canton (OH), Hartford (CT), and Pittsburgh (PA). In addition the Myrtle Beach International Airport announced in October plans to target new direct flights from the following markets in the coming months: Houston, Texas; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Peoria or Bloomington, Illinois; South Bend, Indiana; Islip, New York; Nashville, Tennessee; Dulles Airport in Northern Virginia; Flint, Michigan; White Plains, New York; Trenton, New Jersey; Knoxville, Tennessee; Kansas City, Missouri; Louisville, Kentucky; Rockford, Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Providence, Rhode Island.
9. Barefoot General Manager Named Myrtle Beach Golf Course Employee of the Year
The 2017 MBAGCOA Employee of the Year recipient is Dave Genevro. He was nominated by Mike Ross and Rich Bartram. Dave was surprised and honored to win the award. He has been in the Myrtle Beach area for 17 years. Barefoot Resort Head Pro and marketing director Rich Bartram, PGA said Genevro is willing to do just about any task on the property, and has displayed leadership, care for employees and forward thinking throughout his tenure. “He sets the standard for our resort and is always the first one in and the last to leave. He has been the guiding force behind Barefoot Resort & Golf since our inception,” Bartram said. “Under Genevro’s direction, Barefoot Resort was named the 2016 North American Golf Resort of the Year by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). “I’m very excited and proud because I know the list of people who have won this in the past are a lot of people who have done a lot for Myrtle Beach golf,” Genevro said. Dave has been on many local committees and boards for organizations including the MBAGCOA, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday and North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. Dave Genevro is automatically entered into the South Carolina ‘Employee of the Year’ race, voted by the SCGCOA.
10.Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Turns 50
The golf marketing cooperative that has helped power the area’s growth into golf’s most popular destination celebrated its 50th anniversary this year. When MBGH was founded in 1967, the Grand Strand had fewer than 10 courses. Today the area is home to multiple top 100 public courses and attracts more golf groups than any other destination in country.

Many times this create a “skull” or a “duff” where the ball either skims across the green or flops into the bunker. The reason for this is that the average golfer sets up on his right side because he thinks this will help him lift the ball up and onto the green (Photo A). They end up flipping their right hand if they are right-handed. There is too much hand and arm action involved in this, creating the skulled shot (Photo B).

Our dear friend Winthrop “Win” Stevens. passed away on August 12, 2017. When you get into your late seventies you start to lose close friends and I have lost my share in the last couple of years, 5 to be exact. But the recent loss of our friend Win shook us terribly. He was so together in mind and body. I just re-read his sterling article in last year’s On The Green about Bald Head Island and the golf course renovation he helped spearhead.
home on Bald Head. When Win retired he picked Bald Head Island as his home and we saw each other often. When Judy and I bought our home in Cozumel, Mexico, Win and Fran came to visit during Carnival. It started an annual event that enabled them to be a part of our wonderful Mexican family and something we so looked forward to each year. It was bonding and partying down on the Mexican paradise island for two weeks every year for 26 years. He and Fran became part of all that we did for our Mexican family’s grandchildren’s education.
Win and I met when he was the Advertising Director for Golf Digest. At the time I was doing On The Green inserts in the magazine. He went on to become the publisher of Family Circle Magazine and named Himmelsbach Communications the nation wide representative for travel and leisure. Our collaboration was hugely successful and we became great personal friends.
Win had a brilliant advertising mind (Executive with Golf Digest, Family Circle Magazine, Golf World, Reader’s Digest, Snow Country and Tennis Magazine) and I reached out to him often over the last twenty or so years for advice. On a personal level he was my pal, plain and simple, a terrific guy, great golfer, a ton of fun with a sterling personality. I can’t describe in words how his loss has had an impact on me personally and the overwhelming sadness Judy and I feel.

Golf Ambassador Bob LeComte and Golf Pioneer Vernon Brake Enshrined into Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame Bob LeComte, a guiding force in the World Amateur Handicap Championship, and Vernon Brake, a pioneer in the Myrtle Beach golf package industry, were inducted into the Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame at a ceremony at Pine Lakes Country Club in October of 2017. Established to pay tribute to the men and women who have played significant roles in the development of the Myrtle Beach area golf industry, the Hall of Fame was founded in 2009.

Robert J. LeComte was born in Brooklyn, NY, moved to Wilmington, DE in 1955, and enjoyed a productive 37-year career in marketing at E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. Upon retiring from DuPont, Bob brought his expertise and business acumen to Myrtle Beach, where he joined Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday.
In 1965 Vernon Brake entered the hotel business on the Grand Strand. He quickly realized that to be successful as a hotel owner, he also needed to be involved in the golf packaging business. In 1970 he and several friends purchased The Breakers Hotel and, as managing partner for 34 years, Brake saw the property grow from its original 71 units to 667 units. Golf was a large contributor to this growth. As a result, The Breakers joined with other partners to form Myrtle Beach National Golf Club (MBN), which built three golf courses designed by the Arnold Palmer Group. MBN ultimately developed 10 courses and became one the driving forces behind the area’s growth.
Over the course of his career, LeComte created the two most significant title sponsorships in the destination’s history. He brought DuPont as a sponsor to World Amateur Handicap Championship, leading to one of the longest title sponsor relationships in all of sports. The World Amateur became an iconic event in the world of golf, attracting players from around the globe, with Bob as the driving force. In addition to leading the World Am, he also assumed additional responsibilities in promoting his favorite golf destination. Bob’s tenacity led to securing Energizer as a title sponsor for the Senior Tour Championship, bringing a high profile, professional golf event to Myrtle Beach. As golf on the Grand Strand exploded, Brake became an integral part of the Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday Board of Directors and for 28 years served in all capacities. As the need for computerized golf reservations grew, Brake became a charter Board member of the Grand Strand Tee Time Network. He served as a charter Board member of the Hotel/Motel Association and Board member of the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. He was also instrumental in the development of Arrowhead Country Club. Retiring at age 74, Brake is a brilliant example of finding what you love to do and making it your life’s work.

Cole Sutherland moved from Hilton Head Island to Charlotte, N.C., when he was in sixth grade, which took away from the time he and his father had to play golf together. His father, Tim, is a residential realtor with Charter One Realty in Hilton Head Island and is also a Class A PGA pro, and Cole is now a 17-year-old rising senior at Providence High School in Charlotte. The National Father & Son Classic presented by PGA Tour Superstore has given them a reason to join forces, and an opportunity to become champions together. The Sutherlands defeated more than 300 other duos in the 20th version of the Father-Son, claiming the title Saturday by a stroke over Jeffrey and Taylor Bibbs of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., with a 14-under 202 in rounds of scramble, best ball and alternate shot. The tournament featured teams from more than 40 states and five foreign countries. “Being apart, it’s always fun coming here and competing and just hanging out with him. We don’t get to do that too much,” Cole said. The Sutherlands opened the tournament with an 11-under 61 Thursday in the scramble format at Leopard’s Chase Golf Links but were six strokes out of the lead following a 72 Friday in best ball at Prestwick Country Club, which they said was set up at just 6,300 yards. “I think both of us just pressed a little too much,” Tim said. “We’re both long-ball hitters and the course was
really short so it took us out of our game a bit.” They caught fire early in Saturday’s alternate shot format at Legends Resort’s Parkland Course, going 5 under through 11 holes to take a 3 up lead, and that allowed them to survive a couple three-putt bogeys down the stretch in a 3-under 69. “Today we worked as a team really well,” Cole said. “It was good today.” The Sutherlands were playing in the Father-Son for the second time, having finished sixth overall last year. “I told my son before we came I thought this year was our year to win this thing and together we pulled it through,” Tim said. “This format is kind of a fun format.” For their win, the Sutherlands earned prizes including a trophy and golf bag, free entry into next year’s 21st Father-Son tournament, and entry and expenses aside from flights into the sold out European Father & Son Golf Championship. This year’s event is being played from Oct. 23-28 at Almenara Golf & Spa Resort in Cadiz, Spain. “We’re going, most definitely. We’re looking forward to it,” Tim said. No. The handle is too much in the palm of the hand.

1. Grip placement that promotes an open club face 2. Arm dominated downswing 3. They tend to aim left 4. They try and swing “hard” 5. Point of contact on the club is on the toe 6. Can’t make a proper turn because of a lack of flexibility I would also bet that they are trying to do the following: 1. Take it back “straight” 2. Keep their head down on the down swing” 3. Swing to the left so the ball doesn’t go to the right 4. Swing their arms hard to get some distance I don’t believe slicers truly understand what makes a ball slice or they wouldn’t be doing these things. I try to educate the student on what makes the ball do certain things. Every golfer is different in the way that they swing, think, and what they are capable of doing physically. I hate generaliza-
tions in golf but for the purpose of this article I’m doing it. The real technical reason that golfers slice is that they start out with a grip in the left hand that is too far up into the pad of their hand which creates an open club face throughout the swing. Because of the open club face, the golfer tries to swing over the top of the plane and to the left in an attempt to square the face. The golfer also fires his arms first in the transition which decreases power and creates an out to in swing pattern. All of this adds up to poor contact, slow swing speed, and a ball flight that is weak and to the right and always short of the flag.

Golfers who slice or fade the ball have common characteristics. Many of them have the same ideas that they try that don’t work. Most all of the issues with a slicer are mechanical, but some of it stems from how they think about trying to correct it. If you put a slicer in my teaching bay for the first time, I will bet anything that they have most of the following characteristics:
To fix this the golfer must improve his left hand relationship with the club and club face to give him a reason to swing more from the inside. The hardest and most difficult improvement comes from delaying the urge to fire the arms at the ball from the top of the swing and to allow the lower body to start to work laterally before the arms fire. This is similar to how a baseball player makes a slight step toward the pitcher before he swings the bat.
