Founders Group International
Your New Ambassador to the Grand Strand Golf Experience It’s a new look within the Myrtle Beach golf industry – but one that blends its top courses with a consumer appeal that has been decades in the making. And it embodies what you’ve come to like most about golfing the Grand Strand over the years, and takes it to a whole new level.
King’s North 10 On The Green Magazine
www.onthegreenmagazine.com
Wild Wing Plantation
INTRODUCING FOUNDERS GROUP INTERNATIONAL The proud new owner and operator of 22 of Myrtle Beach’s most requested designs.
FGI made its initial splash in 2014 with its acquisition of eight renowned courses – including TPC Myrtle Beach, host of the 2000 Senior Tour Championship, and the Grand Strand’s only design rated 5 stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play”; and World Tour Golf Links, 2004 recipient of “Course of the Year” honors by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and a visiting golfer’s paradise that pays homage to many of the world’s most renowned golf holes and venues.
•
King’s North – the most renowned of three Arnold Palmer designs at Myrtle Beach National Golf Club that also includes West Course and SouthCreek, and all of which have been a staple of the Grand Strand golf scene for more than four decades
•
Pine Lakes Country Club – “The Granddaddy,” Myrtle Beach’s first-ever golf club founded in 1927 by the legendary Robert White, the first president of the PGA of America
TPC Myrtle Beach and World Tour were joined by Aberdeen Country Club, Burning Ridge Golf Club, Colonial Charters Golf Club, Founders Club at Pawleys Island, Indian Wells Golf Club and River Hills Golf & Country Club.
•
Grande Dunes Resort Club – Honored in 2001 as “Course of the Year” by the National Golf Course Owners Association, and most recently a co-host of the 2014 PGA Professional National Championship.
But as quickly as FGI emerged with these eight designs, its “game-changing” moment came in 2015 when it reached agreement with National Golf Management to acquire the Myrtle Beach golf industry’s most established group of courses, loyalty programs and reservation services. They operated for years under the popular “Prime Times Signature Courses” brand, and are now rolled in FGI’s emerging Founders Collection portfolio that includes:

Pine Lakes Country Club Jack Nicklaus (Long Bay, Pawleys Plantation), Arnold Palmer (Myrtle Beach National) and Tom Fazio (TPC Myrtle Beach) … 14 recipients of four or more stars in Golf Digest’s “Places to Play” … and local, statewide and national “Golf Course of the Year” accolades among many of its courses. The Founders Collection courses are now the featured courses of the Prime Times Signature Card, a loyalty program that for years has rewarded regular players of its courses with the Grand Strand’s lowest available rates – in addition to complimentary rounds earned with frequent play. They’re also part of a premium loyalty program (the Prime Times Honors Club) that takes this premise even higher by adding an array of country club-level benefits. And the Founders Collection is just the starting point in FGI’s ability to offer the visiting golfer easy, unparalleled access to the best rates for more than 70 golf courses throughout the Grand Strand. Whether you’re seeking a last-minute tee time or planning a multi-round golf getaway for your group, FGI’s resources include a phone reservation center, Tee Time Central, that’s open 7 days a week – along with popular Web sites at MBN.com and MyrtleBeachGolfTrips.com that give you easy, 24/7 access online. FAMILY GOLF WEEK
July 15 - 18, 2015 Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Bryce Kendrick, a senior captain on the Tennessee Tech men’s golf team, has been feeling pretty good about his golf game this summer. A 10-shot win with his father in the 18th National Father & Son Team Classic presented by PGA Tour Superstore won’t do anything to quell his good vibes. Bryan and Bryce Kendrick of Knoxville, Tenn., shot a 25-under-par 190 gross score in the nearly 700-player event to earn their second title in the past three years. The Kendricks shot a spectacular 12-under 60 Thursday in a best ball format at Prestwick Country Club, 1-under 71 Friday in alternate shot play at Legends Resort’s Moorland Course, and 12-under 59 Saturday in a captain’s choice scramble format at Thistle Golf Club. “It’s fun when you look up and shots are going at the flag, and you’re making 8and 10-footers routinely,” Bryce said. In the best-ball 60 at Prestwick, Bryce shot a 7-under 65 on his own ball despite a shot out of bounds that led to a double bogey, and both players made eagles as they took an eight-shot lead after the first round. Bryce, 21, was 6 under through 10 holes. The Kendricks have competed in the Father-Son four times, including the past three years. Their score was 21 under both in 2013 when they won by a stroke over two-time champions Gary Carpenter Sr. and Jr., in 2014, when they finished

two strokes behind champions Phillip and Josh Radcliff of Coppell, Texas. “The courses were harder this year,” Bryan said. “Prestwick and Thistle were challenging, and they had Thistle [tees] back, which was interesting. I think the golf courses were harder [in the championship flight] this year than any other year we’ve played.” Bryan says he still drives the ball up to 280 yards, but his son is consistently 30 to 40 yards longer off the tee, so it was a challenge in the alternate shot and scramble formats to select Bryan’s six required drives. “We’re always trying to figure out where we’re going to play mine,” Bryan said. Based on their win, the Kendricks have an opportunity to play in the European Father & Son Golf Championship from Oct. 26-31 in Cadiz Andalusia, Spain. They finished 11th two years ago in the event, which
The inaugural year of the Father & Daughter Team Classic and Mother & Daughter Team Classic was a success says Tournament Director, Brad “Greenie” Greenstein. “When one of our teams traveled from Germany all the way to Myrtle Beach, we new we made the right decision with the Daughter events”. The 2015 Father & Daughter gross winners were Rick Bradshaw from Terrell, NC and his daughter, Leah Dunkel from Sherrills Ford, NC. The net winners were John and Payton Starmack from Elgin, SC. The 2015 Mother & Daughter gross winners were Virginia Ambrose and Debbie Allen of Virginia Beach, VA. The net winners were Carol Giddens and Jodi Rush of Clewiston, FL. 2016 Tournaments The 2016 Family Golf Week tournaments will take place July 21 - 23. The Best Of
Myrtle Beach
The Dye Course at Barefoot Resort
Established in the fall of 2012, The Best of Myrtle Beach Golf Group consists of 16 award-winning golf courses along the Grand Strand from Shallotte, North Carolina to Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. This remarkable group of courses includes five “Golf Digest Top 100 Public Courses in America.” With an abundance of marsh front and Intracoastal Waterway holes, you will experience the unique coastal vistas and charm that the region is renowned for. For dramatic beauty and world class playability, there is no finer selection of golf courses than those listed below.
The Thistle
Arrowhead
THe THisTle The Thistle Golf Club is a 27-hole Tim Cate design. The course and clubhouse were inspired by an ancient Scottish golf society called Thistle Golf Club. Documents and artifacts from the old club are on display in the clubhouse. The course features three nines that present expansive vistas with wide fairways and generous green complexes. The openness provides ample room off the tee and invites the prevailing ocean breeze. Stacked sod bunkers and the surrounding vegetation create strong resemblances to the great links courses of Scotland. arrowHead Golf Course South Carolina’s “1998 Golf Course of the Year.” Designers Ray Floyd and Tom Jackson have sculpted Arrowhead’s 27-hole complex into three aesthetic masterpieces. The Lakes, features dramatically sloping fairways and strategically placed water hazards; The Cypress, gently traces the outskirts of a pristine Carolina hardwood wetland; and The Waterway wide fairways with dramatic holes along the high bluffs of the Intracoastal Waterway. Arrowhead is located in Myrtle Beach just five minutes from the Myrtle Beach International Airport. BarefooT resorT In the fall of 2014 the Golf Channel deemed the Barefoot Resort & Golf location as the “perfect fit” for their hit reality TV show “Big Break” because of their central location, infrastructure, quality of product and history.
Barefoot - Fazio Course
With the Dye Course, Pete Dye set out to create something that would linger in the golfer’s mind forever. Bordering the natural white sands of the Carolina Bays, this visually stunning design is filled with the infamous pitfalls for wayward shots that have become synonymous with the Dye name. The Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is routed through a spectacular piece of property in the heart of Barefoot Resort. Like many European courses, the course does not return to the clubhouse after nine holes. It is not a British links course, but rather a classic Lowcountry course, filled with live oaks, pines, sand, natural areas and native grasses.
Barefoot - Love Course
A Carolina native, Davis Love III embraces a tradition of Lowcountry character in his latest design. The Love Course incorporates the recreated ruins of an old plantation home along holes 3-7. Wide open fairways and generous landing areas set the stage for an unforgettable round of golf. The Norman Course, Greg Norman’s newest design at Barefoot Resort is unique in many ways. With only 60 acres of mowable grass existing on all 18 holes, Greg uses stunning waste areas and the site’s natural vegetation to frame each hole. The course resembles one found in the deserts of the southwest, without the desert.

Here each hole seems to have been crafted by nature rather than by man. And the three finishing holes are among the world’s best. Discover for yourself why Golf Digest chose Heather Glen as 1987’s #1 new public course, and names it again and again as among the country’s best. The course’s 27 holes are even lovelier in maturity, its setting is truly spectacular, and the 19th Century clubhouse echoes its Scottish tradition. Architect Clyde Johnston brings back the traditional look at Shaftsbury Glen. You will think of Winged Foot as you play the newest of Myrtle Beach’s championship courses. This beautiful course should be on your must-play list...just 10 minutes from Restaurant Row via the new Highway 22. Possum Trot is a long respected venue rated “Friendliest course on the strand” where the guest is #1. Spacious fairways and awesome Par 5’s make for a golfing experience as good as it gets. Warm up on the area’s most complete golf training center. Caledonia Built upon the former site of a working southern rice plantation, Caledonia has been recognized for its design and incredible beauty. Caledonia was recently ranked #27 in GOLF Magazine’s 2014 “Top 100 You Can Play” and is annually ranked on “America’s 100 Greatest Public courses” list by Golf Digest. The 6,526yard, par-70 course has been described as having “18 signature holes” with holes routed around majestic oaks and meandering streams. True Blue planTaTion CRanked in Golf Magazine’s “2014 Top 100 Courses You Can Play” list, True Blue Golf Club represents the class of the expansive golf offerings in and around Myrtle Beach. The dramatic, fun layout is known for its vast fairways, undulating greens and impressive elevation changes. The rolling terrain and native vegetation of this once thriving indigo and rice plantation makes for one of the most spectacular settings in golf.
presTwiCk CounTry CluB Dense forests of pine are paired with sandy waste areas for a contrast of perfection at Prestwick Country Club. Creating elevations with dune-like berms, stairway bunkers and deep bulkhead protected greens meant moving over 1.3 million cubic yards of earth, but the end product was well-worth it in the end. Streams wander between the holes surrounded by framing lakes and generous landing areas in this Dye masterpiece. BlaCkmoor This spectacular undulating design takes advantage of the natural terrain and beautiful vistas making it a most enjoyable place to play. The design is one that stretches the imagination – almost begging for the untraditional at times. Designer Gary Player was able to use his wisdom and talent to provide a challenging course for the most capable golfer as well as high-handicappers. TidewaTer Golf CluB Nestled like a sleeping giant between the Intracoastal Waterway and Cherry Grove, the legendary Tidewater Golf Club offers the perfect combination of natural beauty and challenging play. Seamlessly marrying the game to its surroundings, architect Ken Tomlinson evokes the style and majesty of some of the game’s greatest venues and delivers an experience that puts this course on the must-play list of many Grand Strand golfers. world Tour Now you can play 18 of the world’s most legendary golf holes on America’s most visionary course – World Tour Golf Links. It’s a trip around the world played on a course you’ll never forget! The Open Nine includes holes inspired by St. Andrews and Pinehurst No. 2. The Championship Nine includes holes inspired by the four major championships — The Masters, United States Open, British Open and PGA Championship.

PALMETTO DISTILLERY 4801 South Kings Hwy. Myrtle Beach, SC 29575 843-238-2855 Palmetto Distillery is a labor of love for Trey and Bryan Boggs. The two brothers and entrepreneurs from Anderson, SC are dedicated business men, southern to the bone and most importantly spirit coinsures. The brothers drew inspiration from their own heritage and that of South Carolina to create Palmetto Distillery. Which produced Palmetto Moonshine, South Carolina’s First Legal Moonshine and Palmetto Whiskey. Every batch of our award winning Palmetto Moonshine is made in small batches from corn, sugar, water and yeast in a copper still to deliver a product with unmatched quality, purity and taste. The newest edition to the Palmetto Distillery family is Palmetto Whiskey. The inspiration for this truly exceptional whiskey comes from the South Carolina Dispensary. The Dispensary was a state controlled monopoly on liquor sales in South Carolina which operated from 1893-1915. During this time period the Dispensary was responsible for almost every means of production; this included creating bottles and distilling the liquor to fill them. It was this tradition that inspired us to create Palmetto Whiskey; A 21% rye straight American whiskey, matured in new French oak to achieve an unparalleled taste and finish. We craft Palmetto Whiskey in small batches and each bottle is filled by hand to ensure quality. Palmetto Distillery’s mission is to honor the heritage of South Carolina’s liquor production by creating products of unmatched taste and quality. We take pride in creating spirits that showcase the colorful history of the Palmetto State and the deep connection our brands have to South Carolina. Come by our Myrtle Beach location today and experience for yourself a true southern tradition.

SCOTLAND & MYRTLE BEACH An Historic Golf Connection
Scotland. The home of golf, of historic linksland. Our game’s first true play grounds, and its lasting legacy. Raw, natural, wind-whipped, centuries-old layouts that recall golf’s beginnings and its iconic course architects. Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand. The “Seaside Golf Capital of the World.” Home to more than 90 courses along a 60 mile stretch of the coastal Carolinas. Manicured, beautifully maintained tracks, all but two of which were built after 1960, designed by some of the biggest names in modern golf architecture, on which thousands enjoy the game in an often perfect lowcountry climate. By Mitch Laurance On a recent visit to Scotland with the media team from PlayGolfGetaways.com and organized by VisitScotland, I had another chance to experience the joy of links golf and the brilliance of the game’s first architects. On the flight home, I was thinking about how I would miss the Scottish courses I love, but also about how lucky I was to be returning to my home in Myrtle Beach, to great golf courses and some of the game’s best modern-day designers. I realized, too, that no matter how seemingly different the Grand Strand layouts may be to the Scottish links courses I’d just left, how opposite our culture and climate, there would be many op-
portunities in Myrtle Beach to connect to the Scottish game. Many of the Grand Strand’s courses reflect the influence of the courses I played in Scotland, with features that, although set within the modern American framework and style, connect them to their historic relatives.

What constitutes a true ‘links’ course? What features remind us of the Scottish game? The earliest courses of Scotland were actually laid out by Mother Nature, on flat, barren coastal land that “linked” the sea to more fertile land further inland, often bordered by

wind-swept dunes and high grasses. The earliest bunkers were formed by grazing sheep huddling together against the cold wind in a hollow, which filled with sand over time. Rolling, churning land framed by mounds and dunes became fairways and greens, given definition by men like Old Tom Morris of St. Andrews and those that followed him. Numerous golf courses around the world are called “Links,” today a much more general term. Although none of the Myrtle Beach courses featured on these pages would ever be considered true ‘links’ courses, playing them, and many others along the Grand Strand, will definitely connect you to the Scottish roots of the game.
Visitors to World Tour Golf Links are treated to 18 holes inspired by legendary holes around the world, including #1 and #18 from The Old Course at St. Andrews. Not the original Swilcan Bridge, but a wonderful homage to the most famous landmark in golf nonetheless.

CAPE FEAR NATIONAL GOLF CLUB North Carolina-based architect Tim Cate moved 1.5 million cubic tons of earth to create the stunning design at Cape Fear National on the northern end of the Grand Strand. Beautiful framing dunes and links-style run-off areas around greens are framed by high native grasses, giving Cape Fear a dreamlike Scottish feel.
Photo: Michael Clemmer
THE DYE COURSE AT BAREFOOT RESORT Few modern architects have been as influenced by classic Scottish design as has Pete Dye, and his award-winning Dye Course at Barefoot Resort is an 18 hole immersion in Dye’s reverence for the home of golf. Massive dunes and elevation changes, pot bunkers, railroad ties, elevated green complexes and run-off areas abound. If it weren’t for palm trees and the weather, you’d swear you were in Scotland.
Photo: Barefoot Resort & Golf
LEGENDS HEATHLAND COURSE Voted “One of the Top 10 Best New Resort Courses in the World” by Golf Magazine when it opened in 1990, the Heathland Course is the only Grand Strand layout designed by Tom Doak. Doak’s Scottish connection runs deep, working and living in St. Andrews after college, studying the great classic courses, then working for Pete Dye. The Heathland Course reflects Doak’s “responsibility to build courses which reflect the ideals of the game as the Scots still play it.”
THISTLE GOLF CLUB Talk about a true Scottish connection. The Thistle Golf Club in Sunset Beach, NC takes its name from one of the oldest and most honored clubs in golf history, founded in 1815 and based in Leith, Scotland. 27 beautiful links-influenced holes (including rare parallel holes seen here) designed by Tim Cate, and a spectacular Scottish castle-style clubhouse will take you back to the centuries-old origins of the game.
CALEDONIA GOLF & FISH CLUB

Perhaps the most consistently decorated golf course on the Grand Strand, Caledonia (built on the site of a plantation traced back to Dr. Robert Nesbit, a Scotsman who named it after the Roman name for Scotland) combines true lowcountry beauty with the extraordinary creativity of the late Mike Strantz, who revered the often bold, quirky and naturally-created features of Scottish links courses. Caledonia was Strantz’ first solo design, forever tied to his own spectacular though short-lived career and to the classic courses of the game he loved. www.onthegreenmagazine.com www.onthegreenmagazine.com
HEATHER GLEN GOLF LINKS As it did when named “Best New Course in America 1987” by Golf Digest, Heather Glen in Little River, SC has, for almost 3 decades, showcased architect Clyde Johnston’s thoughtful connection to classic Scottish golf in a truly beautiful lowcountry setting. Features such as these sculpted dunes and framing pot bunkers, as well as elevated green complexes and protective railroad ties leading to open run-ups to greens, carry with them an instant Scottish feel.
TRUE BLUE GOLF CLUB Another mind-boggling gem from the artistic palette of lowcountry native Mike Strantz, True Blue gives us a wide variety of Scottish features on a larger-than-life golf landscape. Large undulating green complexes framed by dunes and waving grasses, deep greenside bunkers with Scottish-style steps, and broad tee-tofairway elevation changes reveal Mike Strantz love for Scottish golf, and you can feel it everywhere at True Blue.
Photo: @brianoar
PRESTWICK COUNTRY CLUB Once called one of the “5 Best Kept Secrets in Myrtle Beach” by Golf Digest, Prestwick has long been a key stop for many fans of Dye Design. Pete & PB Dye succeeded in crafting Prestwick as a challenging yet playable layout. Connections to Scottish golf history (including the Prestwick name) and design features are plentiful, as here on the 12th hole with a split fairway, and beautifully landscaped dunes and pot bunkers protecting a large, undulating green. Prestwick is truly a great Scottish-style experience.
GLEN DORNOCH WATERWAY LINKS Clyde Johnston’s gem on the Intracoastal Waterway in Little River, SC always draws golfers to its challenging tribute to Scottish golf. There are few places on the Grand Strand more beautiful than, or as unique as, the double green shared by the 9th and 18th holes, sitting on the Waterway, and recalling the double greens of St. Andrews created by Old Tom Morris. Pot bunkers, a Redan green at the Par-3 4th hole and other features accentuate the Scottish flavor of a perennial Myrtle Beach favorite.
LONG BAY GOLF CLUB Since 1989, the Long Bay Club has been one of Jack Nicklaus’ most popular courses on the Grand Strand, and for good reason. As a course architect Nicklaus, who won the Open Championship 3x and was runner-up 7x, has obviously been influenced by his love for classic course design, and the fairway-dividing dunes, elevated greens and deep bunkering at Long Bay remind us of his link to Scottish golf.

2015 MYRTLE BEACH GOLF HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES ENSHRINED
SANDY MILES 2015 Inductee
PHILLIP GOINGS 2015 Inductee
“The Granddaddy - the Birthplace of Myrtle Beach Golf”
“Welcoming all to the Dunes Beach and Golf Club, with Southern Hospitality”
Big ideas and an equally big personality made Sandy Miles an instrumental part of Myrtle Beach’s growth into the game’s premier golf destination. After serving in the Army, including a tour in Germany, Miles returned to manage Pine Lakes International Country Club.
Just as important as architects and golf course owners are the people on the ground greeting players and providing Southern hospitality that has served as one of Myrtle Beach’s primary assets. No one brought a smile and unquestioned expertise to his job longer and better than Phillip Goings, the longtime caddy master at the Dunes Club. Goings was employed at the Dunes Club from 1952-2005.
Miles immediately established a goal to improve the profile of Pine Lakes and was wildly successful. He coined the venerable Robert White design as the “Granddaddy”, ensuring everyone knew that Pine Lakes was the birthplace of Myrtle Beach golf. Under his direction the once languishing course developed a thriving membership and rivaled the Dunes Club as the area’s premier social hotspot. It was Miles’ idea to serve clam chowder at the turn and he also brought Rolls Royce golf carts to the course, marketing plays that attracted national attention to Pine Lakes and the area. While Miles was most known for his success at the Granddaddy, he worked with fellow Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Fame member Cecil Brandon to help launch Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. When the golf package was born in Myrtle Beach, Miles sent a limo to ferry the first package customers to the course. His willingness and ability to think outside the box helped Myrtle Beach become the destination it is today.
Goings started at the club as a dishwasher, but moved outdoors where he became the head looper at Myrtle Beach’s most famed course. A razor sharp memory made Goings an outstanding caddy master, despite only playing the game once in his life. His personality endeared him to Dunes Club members and guests alike. Fellow Myrtle Beach Golf Hall of Famer Jimmy D’Angelo once said of Goings, “He treats everybody like they are the President of the United States‚-He’s the world’s best.” Goings worked at the Dunes Club for 53 years, setting a standard for work ethic and service that served the entire Myrtle Beach golf community well.
Miles married Beula Gatewood on December 31, 1959. They had two children, Scott and Melissa. 24 On The Green Magazine

Myrtle Beach is known as the Golf Capital of the World. Part of the reason for that is the fact that there are over a hundred golf courses located in a 60-mile stretch of coastline known as the Grand Strand. You can play a different course every day for three months and still have new courses to look forward to. Another reason for that label is that here you can find some of the highest quality golf courses in the 26 On The Green Magazine
country. Golf Digest recently named several of the beach’s courses to the “Top 100 Public Courses in America” list for the 2014 - 2015 season. Thirty-six of the area’s courses hold a rank of four and a half stars or higher. Throw in nationally-known golf schools, top-quality practice facilities, restaurants and nightlife and it’s obvious why we’re the Golf Capital of the World!

North Strand Cape Fear National is a premium
daily fee golf course designed by Tim Cate. Located in the Brunswick Forest community just 5.7 miles south of downtown Wilmington, the course opened to rave reviews in April, 2010. The course layout is visually stunning and intertwined with preserved wetlands and scenic lakes. Over 1.5 million cubic yards of earth was moved to create the dramatic berms, elevated tees, meandering fairways, and sculpted features throughout the course. The landscape includes 1,500 feet of bridges, three waterfalls, beach bunkers that run into ponds, and retaining walls made from huge boulders. Cape Fear National is the northernmost course on the Grand Strand and is well worth the trip.

The fairways of this 18-hole course make their way through a picturesque, heavilywooded terrain but in rolling hills, unusual for a coastal course, are River Hills’ signature feature. The course was nominated as “Best New Course” in 1989 by Golf Digest and recently underwent a $2 million renovation. Colonial Charters Golf & Country Club re-opened in
August 2013. After an extensive renovation project to the 18-hole golf course and clubhouse, this facility has been restored to the quality conditions for which it was acclaimed during the ‘90s. Colonial Charters features a number of memorable holes defined by mature hardwoods and strategically placed water hazards. The 48 On The Green Magazine

LONG BAY Set just outside the heart of Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Golf Club blends the feel of East and West Coast play, starting with the environment designed by The Golden Bear himself, Jack Nicklaus. Dogwoods, pines and maples sit along the course as crystal-blue streams cut through several holes. Beyond the course’s enchantment, players must navigate a variety of bunker styles, shallow greens and considerable elevation changes. It’s clear Nicklaus wasn’t intending Long Bay to be a relative walk in the park – even if at times that’s exactly where you believe you are. Myrtlewood Golf Club offers golfers a choice of two 18-hole layouts conveniently located in the heart of Myrtle Beach. The Palmetto Course is a traditional design with fairways that gently twist and turn their way towards large, TifDwarf greens. The eighteenth offers a dramatic finish along the Intracoastal Waterway. The Palmetto Course was honored by Golf Magazine as the “Local’s Favorite Course”- 2005. In contrast, the PineHills Course is a modern classic designed by Arthur Hills. Contoured fairways and undulating greens provide an excellent test of golf, one you’re sure to enjoy. PineHills was honored by Golf Digest as a “Top Ten Course” in Myrtle Beach. Putting Tools
Amateur golfers struggle with many aspects of the game of golf and can spend a lot of money on teaching aids. Here are a couple of very good teaching aids for putting and I use regularly in my instruction. The first photo shows the “Inside Down the Line” and the “Putting Arc.” Both are very good at helping with putting but can cost between $39.99 and $59.99. (Putting Tools) As you can see in the next group of pictures I have taken two clubs and placed them on the ground in a railroad track formation. You can use alignment sticks as well. Line them up so that they help to create the line you are trying to hit the putt on and use them starting at five feet from the hole. (Photo A)
58 On The Green Magazine
www.onthegreenmagazine.com
You can see that I have placed two tees at the front lip of the hole to create a gate effect. This will help not only with the line of the putt but also the speed. From down the line you can see that the putter stays between the shafts in the back stroke. (Photo A) In the forward stroke I want to feel as though the stroke is a downward blow at impact to create the optimum roll (Photo B). Many people think a person needs to hit up on a putt and this is the farthest from the truth. By hitting up on a putt the ball is forced into the ground and to bounce making it very hard to control the speed and line of the intended putt.
Photo C
In the follow through, the putter will come up slightly but the player needs to keep the putter as low as possible to keep the putter on the intended line. This also keeps the putter between the shafts (Photo C). The tees I mentioned earlier at the front lip of the hole not only give a great focal point but also by making putts that roll between the tees creates tremendous confidence. I hope this drill and practice routine will help you with your putting and lead to lower scores.

Kim bested Steve Locke of Lubbock, Tx., a 3 handicap who shot a net 67, by two strokes. Anthony Baker of Walkertown, N.C., shot a 73 Friday and finished with a four-day total of 290, good enough to beat Ryan Reynolds by two strokes to win the World Am’s Gross Division Championship. Additionally, Clint Payton and John Brown of Seymour, Ind., shot a net team total of 138 to win the International Pairs event and earn the right to compete in Spain next year in the IP World Finals. The Flight Winner’s Playoff brought the 32nd annual Myrtle Beach World Amateur Handicap Championship, the game’s most inclusive event, to a close. Nearly 3,400 players from 48 states and 28 countries descended on Myrtle Beach for the 72-hole net stroke play event. Players were arranged into flights according to their handicap and at the conclusion of the four rounds, all flight winners (and ties) advanced to the 18hole world championship playoff. The World Am features six competitive divisions, ranging from men and women 49 years-of-age and under to the super seniors, who are 70 years-of-age and older.

After rain washed out Monday’s round for the majority of the field, the weather was idyllic the rest of the week. The Dye Club, which has been ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses, was in pristine condition and provided an excellent test of golf for the Flight Winner’s Playoff. The World’s Largest 19th Hole was again the heartbeat of the World Am. Players and their guests were treated to free food and drinks, a golf expo and live entertainment. Two-time major champion John Daly was on-hand, signing autographs, serving drinks and even singing onstage. Daly was joined by Golf Channel analyst Charlie Rymer, television personality Win McMurry, and the popular Sirius/XM radio show Katrek and Maginnes On Tap broadcast live from the 19th Hole main stage each night. Reading the Lie Is the Sand Fluffy or Firm?
On The Green Golf Lesson
Nick Bradley has taught on the PGA Tour and the European Tour for the past 25 years. He has written the two best selling golf instruction books since 2005: The 7 Laws of the Golf Swing and Kinetic Golf. His list of students include US Open and European number 1 Justin Rose, Kevin Chappell, Brad Faxon, Stephen Gallagher and European Ryder Cup team Captain Paul McGinley.
Photo A
Photo B
The key to becoming a better than proficient bunker player is reading the lie. Having taught Justin Rose for four years I know a thing or two about great bunker play since Justin year by by has been one of the best bunker players on the PGA tour. The key component to become great at sand play is to read the lie correctly. If you can just take a moment to examine how the ball is sitting relative to its lie and the composition of the sand you can set up and swing accordingly for the shot ahead. In the pictures that follow I demonstrate and describe the feelings that one must go for facing either soft fluffy sand or firm and compact sand. Before we move on I want you to look at photos A, B, and C. I want to reveal to you the trick to playing bunker shots and it can be found in the release pattern of the right wrist. You’ll see in the first image how the shaft and the right wrist appears to be flat and the shaft is at 90 degrees - for most bunker shots this should be a prerequisite. In photo B you can see a hinging of the wrist backward; Whilst for different shots this will vary just for the exercise of this article we will use a ‘medium’ amount of set. In photo C we have the secret to great bunker play. All good bunker players feel the shot through the bounce of the club i.e. the sole of the club. For this to occur the right wrist must ‘puck’, a term I first used in my first best sell64 On The Green Magazine
Photo C ing book ‘The 7 Laws of the Golf Swing’. A puck release, which is also used in the full swing happens when the right wrist unhinges under before the swing regains its through plane pattern. In ‘pucking’ the club you can be aggressive through the sand and accelerate. Ok lets deal with soft and fluffy sand first... Fluffy Soft Sand The set up for this shot should feature a couple of key components. 1. A wider than shoulder width stance. 2. Weight 60 /40 favouring the left side. 3. The shaft of the club angled at 90 degrees to the base of the bunker. 4. The middle of the body (sternum) opposite the ball. Its essential that our angle of attack with soft and fluffy sand be relatively shallow and bowl shaped. To facilitate this sense that you have very little or no wrist set during your backswing. See photo D The feeling should be wide and unhinged. This alone creates a skimming effect with the club as opposed to digging. In photo E we once again sense into the follow through that this wide theme with the hands to club relationship
www.onthegreenmagazine.com
Photo F
is maintained with almost the feeling of pointing the clubhead at the target (your target may not be the flag remember).
a little more. Due to the sand ‘compaction’ it will be heavier and this need more angular momentum to ‘pop’ it out. So wet sand...........Hinge!
Firm Compact Sand
In photo I we once again feel the release that I described at the beginning of this piece. You can plainly see how I have re-hinged on the way through. Whilst we want to create a ‘sharper’ angle into the ball we obviously do not want to leave the club in the sand. There should no question be more of a ‘thump’ sound to the shot as opposed to a brushing high hat!
In the next set of images you will see subtle differences in the ‘look’ of the stroke - once again to be a master bunker player you must read the lie and morph into that situation.
Photo G
Photo I
Photo H
Photo F once again shows the bunker set up, only this time what you can’t sense or feel is that I am squeezing into my left foot with even more pressure. Take a look at photo G from my new book ‘Kinetic Golf.’ You can clearly see through the redness of my shin bone where the pressure is felt in the legs. In photo H you can see the first difference between this and the stroke used for the fluffy lie. Look how my right arm has folded into the side and the angle between my left arm and my left wrist is more acute. I have created ‘angle’ in which to knife into the sand
So start to read the lie before you haplessly step into a bunker and hope for the best. If you are in the Myrtle Beach area visit my website: www.NickBradleyGolf.com or email me at : nrbradleygolf@gmail.Com

MYRTLE BEACH
GOLF PACKAGES
An Insiders Guide to Organizing Your Myrtle Beach Golf Trip
After a long week of work or chasing the kids around the house, you find yourself settling in behind your computer, or browsing the net on your new smart phone. The golden terms “Myrtle Beach Golf Trip” seemingly type themselves into your search engine. You are instantaneously flooded with a seemingly endless array of page after page of options and information. Whether you are a first time trip planner, or a veteran of countless Myrtle Beach golf campaigns, organizing a trip to the Golf Capital of the World, can be a time-consuming and challenging task. It should instead be a fun prelude to a trip full of memories and great stories. Using my years of experience of setting up Myrtle Beach golf packages for a living, I am going to share with you my 3 best tips to making your next golf trip to the Grand Strand your best one yet. Tip #1: Choose Your Travel Dates Myrtle Beach features four distinct seasons, each with its own pluses and minuses. Here is my breakdown of each season, along with a tip for each one:
66 On The Green Magazine
www.onthegreenmagazine.com
Winter – The winter season runs from Thanksgiving until the first week of March. The good news during this timeframe is that both the golf and lodging prices are at the lowest mark of the calendar year. The bad news is that that the weather is very unpredictable, and it gets dark prior to 5:00 PM, so two rounds in a day is seemingly tough to bag. My advice-The end of February is a great time for a golf trip, if you don’t mind playing with a little fire. The prices are fantastic, and your odds of decent weather are on the plus side of the 50/50 line. Spring – The spring season is busiest part of the Myrtle Beach golf year, and is the highest demand. This frame runs from the second week of March until the end of May. The good news is that the weather is usually perfect (especially for folks who still have snow on their front lawns), and course conditions are beginning to thrive. The town itself is not inundated with visitors yet, restaurants are eager for business, and lodging rates are still very reasonable. The bad news is that because of the high demand for tee
times, the golf rates are at the highest points for the year. My advice-Work in conjunction with a packager to find a “family” of courses. When you book multiple rounds within the same course ownership or management group- you are going to get the best prices as well as the most incentive values (such as free lunches, replays, gift cards). Summer – Myrtle Beach was founded as a summertime destination, but the beach tended to overshadow the golf courses. That has changed in the last several years, as more and more golfers are now taking advantage of the great summer deals. The good news is that the golf deals are fantastic, even if you only have time for one round. The weather is picture-perfect, though midday can get on the hot side (especially in July and August). The bad news is that because of the high demand, room rates are at their highest marks of the year. Traffic is also at a peak, but with new roads and routes around town, this is no longer a major issue in town. My advice-Early morning tee times are the best in the summer, as they not only “beat the heat,” but also get you back in time to rejoin the family on the beach by lunchtime. Late afternoon is also a great time to play in the summer, because darkness does not fall until around 9:00 PM, and many courses offer Twilight rates, often less than $25. For the lodging, great deals can be found with non-oceanfront lodging, such as condos located on many of the Strand’s courses. Fall – We finally arrive at the author’s favorite season. Despite the fear factor the Weather Channel desperately tries to instill in everyone regarding the hurricane season, fall is the best balance of all the previously mentioned seasons. The good news is that during these months you would experience the nicest and most consistent weather, the best combination of pricing on both rooms and golf, and getting around town is a breeze, and everything is still open. The bad news is that it begins to get darker and colder towards the middle of October, and there is that chance of tropical storms and “canes” making landfall. My advice-September, September, September. This is the

best time all year to make your golf pilgrimage to Myrtle Mecca. The weather is a pleasant mix of summer/ spring, you have the maximum number of hours of daylight per day, golf prices are still low (especially during the first two weeks of the month), and room rates have begun to creep down from their summer highs. The best time to make the trip is the first week of September, for two main reasons. The first is that the World Amateur Golf Championship is held during the last
week of August, which the majority of courses in town host. All of the maintenance staffs work very hard to have the courses in pristine playing condition, so your trip would come on the heels of the best conditions many courses offer all year. The second benefit of a trip during this date range is having the Labor Day holiday built in, which allows for an extra possible day for the trip.

Tip #2: North vs. South vs. Middle Myrtle Beach is a collection of small towns that range down the Atlantic Ocean coastline. If you drove the entire length of the greater area of Myrtle, you would be in your car for well over an hour. To save yourself from wasting time driving to courses, and to maximize your time on the links, it is best to pick a locale. Whether it be in the North Myrtle Beach/Brunswick county area to the north, the heart of town in central Myrtle Beach, or in the Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet section towards the South-there are enough courses in each to build several diverse golf package options. The North end of town and south end of town are both very similar. They do not feature the high-rise oceanfront hotels and resorts, but instead offer onsite golf course condos and townhomes. These areas are perfect for groups who are looking less at the after golf entertainment options, and more for a golf and then relax theme. There are numerous dining options on both ends, specifically the Murrells
Inlet waterfront to the south, and the Calabash (NC) area to the north. The middle of town is geared more towards the guests looking to stay on the ocean, and who are looking to take advantage of the local attractions and
nightlife. One advantage of staying in central Myrtle Beach, is that you would have the option not only to play the central courses, you would also be able to travel north or south to play those tracks as well. Tip #3: How much do I want to spend?
While this seems like an obvious question, anyone in a sales background will tell you not to show your hand until you are called upon, this is the most important information you can share. With the number of course in Myrtle Beach, multiplied by the number of possible golf lineups – yes, some boundary needs to be set. If you can inform your golf packager what the maximum budget per person is at the beginning of your quotation process, this will speed everything up for you, and enable your package representative to put together the best options that will fall into your price range. We hope these tips help you in your Myrtle Beach golf planning experience. If you have any questions, contact any of the golf package providers you see in this magazine. They will be eager to help.

Azalea Sands Features 8” Cups Azalea Sands is the first course on the Grand Strand to feature 8” cups. The bigger cup size is a concept being pushed by many leaders in the industry of golf. There are over 100 courses in the United States that have already started using the bigger hole size. The bigger cups mean lower scores, quicker rounds and overall more fun. The CEO of TaylorMade Golf has been at the forefront of this concept from the beginning. The idea is to save a dying industry by attracting new golfers. The larger cup is a great way for beginners to play at a faster pace with more reward. Azalea Sands is a club that is all about fun and what’s more fun than more birdies and lower scores. The 8 inch cups are used on all 18 holes. Azalea Sands invites everyone to come out and make some birdies. For more information don’t hesitate to call Azalea Sands at (843) 272-6191.

New Greens at Rivers Edge The ownership and management made the tough decision to change the greens from Paspalum to a more climate tolerant Bermuda grass. Rivers Edge reopened with all-new Sunday Ultra Dwarf Bermuda greens. Rivers Edge, which is managed by East Coast Golf Management, will be the first course on the Grand Strand to feature Sunday Bermuda greens. This grass allows the greens to be cut lower than the Paspalum allowed, creating faster speeds. The staff have been hard at it since closing down the course in July 2015 to put in the greens surface and perform some other needed renovations. In addition to the greens transition, 135 trees were removed predominantly around greens to add sunlight and improve grass growth, and native plants were added around several holes including 4, 6 and 15 and tee boxes on holes 10, 12 and 13. The size of the greens on holes 3, 4, 5, 14 and 15 were reduced and areas around them were sodded to be kept as closely-mown areas that will offer playing options. A bunker behind the par-3 fifth green is now more pronounced and vegetation has been added to the area, and drainage has been improved in front of a handful of greens to avoid saturation. The course is now ready for play. Early reports from the staff are that the progress went really well, and that the greens are superb!

Tidewater Patriot Day Charity Golf Tournament The biggest day of the year at Tidewater Golf Course is on Labor Day. Bill Pearson, Tournament Director for the Tidewater Charity Tournament Committee (TCTC) and his volunteers work year round to put on a tournament that is much more than the golf itself. Players can feel the spirit of patriotism from the opening ceremonies to the awards luncheon. There are plenty of prizes, “it seems like half the field of players win somethings” Bill says, “ I always said if I ever had anything to said about setting up a golf tournament, it would be one where every player would be a competitor not just a contributor.” So it’s four flights, three winners in each flight using player’s handicaps to help make it fun and fair. The tournament has become one of many events around the country held on Patriot Golf Day (Labor Day). The theme is definitely to honor our military veterans and to support the families of those lost or disabled with scholarships from the Folds of Honor. To date ten college scholarships have been awarded to local families and over 10,000 scholarships nationwide from the Folds of Honor. I have seen the faces of all the local scholarship recipients. “I know how much it means for those families to know that they will not be forgotten” said Bill. The first charity event at Tidewater by TCTC was in 2005 to raise funds for the Shop with a Cop Program. In 2010 the tournament joined with the Folds of Honor and has raised over $90,000 for that program. From the very first event to today TCTC also donates to other local charities as well, altogether we have donated over $400,000 to charity and we are still going. The 2016 tournament will be on September 5th, for all the details on the event and TCTC go to www. tidewatercharitytournament.com. Download the Myrtle Beach Golf app - see page 14
