The Skinny On Skinny!

I

am very excited about Hippocrates Health Institute’s new Weight Loss Transformation Program. It’s the first new program HHI has launched in more than 30 years. And it couldn’t be more timely or necessary. Fad diets are constantly knocking down our doors. Unfortunately, they cause people who need to lose weight—including our young people—to do just the opposite. In fact, I lost 17 pounds during my first three-week stay. That’s life changing. We all want quick results when losing weight to keep that momentum. I met people who lost more than 30 pounds, all while nourishing their bodies with the highest-quality food on the planet and detoxing years of garbage from their systems. But losing unwanted weight and looking 10 years younger were just part of what we all truly found during our stay. We found a lifestyle of truth, living the way our bodies were designed to thrive. s a young person, I, Brian, maintained excess weight. Unpleasantries of a poor body image that accrued into difficulty in breathing compounded the problem. Although young, by my late teens, it was difficult for me to walk upstairs without consistent breaks from the ascension. Of course, the cigarette smoking did not help. At that point in history, there were not many others who were plump, and because I was a man, I got away with it by being called “big.” Those bad old days for me were good old days for the population, because there were so few heavy people. In the developed world, nearly three-quarters of ou are even morbidly obese. The “X” sizes that formerly had to be purchased at specialty stores now line the shelves of all the markets and outnumber the smalls and mediums. All of this carries a big price, not only biologically, for the obvious health problems it sparks (heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc.), but also for the emotional, social, and economic toll it renders. Even in faraway places like islands in the Pacific, with increased consumption of palm oil-rich junk food, the people there are part of this epidemic. For many years, we at Hippocrates thought of weight regulation as a natural side effect through the adaptation of the Hippocrates lifestyle. Our concerns have so escalated that now we have created a specific Weight Loss Transformation Program, knowing this modern plague is destroying the lives of billions. Problems arise when one thinks diets alone are the remedy. First and foremost, one must address the habitual relationship they have with food and unhealthy habits. Working with the mind is the gateway to healthy body form. Of course, we use the latest technologies that ultrasound away pounds; but if you don’t change your mindset, you will once again regain them. As a European, I, Anna Maria, was stunned when I first arrived in America and observed how many large people there were. In those days, Europe had only a spattering of such problems. ALL OF US tend to admire the physique of certain actresses, actors, models and athletes. Yet few of us make a determined commitment to create the same body for ourselves. For the past five generations, exercise has become an option for most of us in the developed world, but less than 5 percent of the European and North American population exercise adequately. All too often I hear people say, “I don’t have time.” Our great-grandparents had no option but to exercise; it was called survival, and the vast majority achieved it via farming. These farms used rich soil to produce organic plants that were freshly harvested and consumed. Survival itself was the gym and health shop of the yonder years. Today, we must put forth effort to leave our high-speed, frantic existence for at least some time each day and go back to the way our bodies evolved and were meant to function. Now we know sitting is called the new smoking. We know

you create inner strength in the process of manifesting a strong, attractive and user-friendly anatomy. One thing I can tell you for sure, after nearly half a century of working in the field of advanced health, is that no one who adopts the Hippocrates lifestyle suffers unwanted weight. Of course, there is no magic in the process; it takes time, commitment and effort to change your attitude, habits and patterns. Our flash-in-the pan culture wants everything fast and creates a short attention span so people forget their priorities 10 minutes after setting them. Real commitment is necessary—not commitment to diet and exercise, but commitment to self. Now we have exposed the real demon that causes most people to carry excess baggage. Not to name names, but years ago when I was on the lecture circuit, I often ran into a notable, 400-pound health authority. Although it was hard for me to understand why

I discovered three rules in weight regulation that apply to all of us: MAKE AN ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT. How you think and feel about yourself will manifest the resulting image. Work hard to recalibrate your selfworth and trust. Believe that you deserve a strong physique and healthy body. EMBRACE VEGETABLES, SPROUTED NUTS, GRAINS, SEEDS AND BEANS. Eliminate sugars (including the so-called natural varieties) and common cooked carbohydrates (breads, pastas, potatoes, etc.). Consume adequate amounts of healthy fluids (water, green drinks, wheatgrass, etc.). Chew when you eat until the food becomes liquid. When emotionally capable, eat less and eventually change breakfast from a time when you consume food to a time when you consume protein-rich supplements like algaes,

comes from body fat. Weightlifting is just as important as aerobics in weight adjustment. Circulating the blood and raising the body core temperature via aerobics flushes impurities, including fat cells, and increases oxygen, which speeds the metabolism and breaks down unwanted weight. A SUCCESSFUL LOSER This Ohio man has found the perfect recipe for a healthier lifestyle. |

ark Meyer Sr. is living large these days, and it’s all because he made the decision to downsize. This summer, he has spent countless hours completing chores that once seemed impossible. He mows the grass, shovels and unloads mulch, and performs yard work around the house. For most men, these seem like mundane tasks. But for Mark, working outside has been a liberating experience. It wasn’t long ago when Mark, a 58-yearold pastor from Bellevile, Ohio, weighed 295 pounds. After his blood-sugar level spiked to 400 in April 2017, he had very little energy and became easily fatigued. Interval training offers a convenient way to make exercise part of your daily routine. The concept of spending 30-60 minutes at the gym is so passé. Folks are getting tremendous benefits by adding multiple rounds of interval activity in between daily obligations. For example, jump rope for one minute, do 10 jump squats, do five pushups, and end with 10 abdominal crunches. That might take five minutes to complete. And we all have five minutes, don’t we? It is intense, but imagine what repeating that four times (20 minutes total) every day would do. It might even motivate you to do more.

Did you know that milk can greatly contribute to childhood obesity? Cow’s milk is designed to put 2 pounds a day onto a growing calf. That is 40 times the growth rate of a human infant. Teens exposed to milk proteins, casein and whey have a higher body mass index (BMI) and waist size. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. In the movie Rocky, Sylvester Stallone ran the 72 stone steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of his training. Seems ridiculous, right? Well, there is actually some science to that workout technique. Studies show that short intense periods (10 minutes) of stair climbing improve cardiovascular function and respiratory health as well as the weight-loss benefits of a healthy, active lifestyle. So no more excuses if you can’t afford a gym or have the time to get to a gym. Hit the stairs at home, work or school. It takes only one minute several times a day to make the health improvements you want.

A study showed that eating whole grains on a daily basis burned an extra 200 calories a day. Researchers believe it is the increase in metabolic rate—as well as “pooping” better—that accounted for this. Increased fiber changes the way all foods are digested by the body. When trying to lose weight as part of a healthy lifestyle, remember to eat more whole grain kernels (sprouted, of course) instead of whole grain flour whenever possible.

A recent study at Oxford University concluded that combating obesity and Type 2 diabetes can be as simple as living in an environment with cooler temperatures. Researchers found that sleeping in cooler temps not only made for more restful and deeper sleep, but also increased calorie burning, which in turn promoted weight loss. We have two types of fat: white fat, which holds calories, and brown fat, which is converted to energy and heat. When warm, the body burns less brown fat to stay cool. This leads to insulin sensitivity and, ultimately, weight gain. So open those bedroom windows a crack if you live in cooler areas.

he prevalence of obesity has increased during the past few decades. Obesity is associated with an increased risk for a wide range of health challenges, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, gallbladder disease, sleep apnea, asthma, osteoarthritis and several types of cancer. Medications are available

to decrease appetite, interfere with macronutrient absorption, or increase energy expenditure. However, the long-term success rate of most weight-loss programs is very low. While many people lose weight initially, they typically regain most or all of the lost weight within five years.

WHAT MAKES YOU GAIN WEIGHT?

WHAT HELPS YOU LOSE WEIGHT?

PLASTICS Exposure to plastics by leaching can have an adverse reaction to our hormones because they are endocrine disrupters. Exposure to low doses of bisphenol A (BPA) is reported to cause obesity in experimental animals. BPA leaches from food and beverage containers under normal conditions and has been found in indoor air. It is possible that the rising obesity rate worldwide is due, in part, to widespread exposure to BPA and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals. CONSUMING SUGAR Among many dietary factors of weight gain is increased use of sugars such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose, which are carbohydrates that substantially increase caloric intake. In addition, consuming large amounts of sugar may lead to addictive eating by two different mechanisms. First, eating sugar can cause low blood sugar in susceptible individuals, with each blood sugar drop trigger-

ing a desire to ingest more sugar or other carbohydrates. Second, sugar-induced addictive eating may be mediated by the endogenous opioid system. Fructose is preferentially metabolized to lipids, and animal studies suggest that fructose consumption may promote the development of abdominal obesity. FOOD ALLERGIES Allergist T.G. Randolph reported in 1947 that a hidden food allergy is a common cause of obesity. He noted that patients are frequently, and often unknowingly, addicted to the same foods to which they are allergic. Patients with a food allergy may feel better immediately after eating an allergenic food but will feel progressively worse after about two hours. The most common allergens (corn, wheat and milk) are high in calories. Eating those foods frequently or in large quantities can cause obesity. Avoiding hidden allergens often results in diuresis, disappearance of edema, loss of food cravings, cessation of excessive appetite, and a rapid initial decrease in weight followed by more gradual but progressive weight loss.

HIGH-FIBER DIET Consuming fiber may help prevent or reverse obesity by three different mechanisms. First, high-fiber foods such as bean sprouts tend to have low caloric density. Second, such foods require additional chewing, which slows the rate at which a person eats. Third, fiber holds water and thereby promotes a feeling of fullness. FEWER TRANS FATTY ACIDS Animals that ate trans fatty acids had a significantly greater increase in mean body weight, a significantly higher ratio of internal fat to external fat, and significantly higher insulin levels after the meal. These findings suggest that consuming trans fatty acids may contribute to obesity, even without excessive caloric intake, possibly by inducing insulin resistance. Trans fats are found in many foods such as fried chicken, doughnuts, cookies, pastries, and crackers.

orld Health Organization’s alarming prediction that 40 percent of the people on Earth will be overweight, obese or morbidly obese in the next decade should awaken all of us to this modern epidemic. Globally, entrepreneurs are cashing in on the extra weight people carry by creating quick-fix dietary and supplement options for use in the quest to normalize the physique. NO QUICK FIX Global studies predict that by the year 2050, 9 of 10 adults will endure unwanted weight. Today, excessive weight contributes to disease with stunning precision: 44 percent of diabetes, 23 percent of coronary heart disease and up to 41 percent of many forms of cancer are sparked by an out-ofcontrol palate and lethargic lifestyle. Needless to say, this has a resounding negative effect on the economy of individual countries and global finances.

Internationally, research of common weight-loss programs exposed their dysfunction resulting in little to no success. Healthy lifestyles, rather than strict diets, attained the desired results for those who made a personal commitment to shed pounds. Little to no emphasis has been placed on the outrageous practices of the multinational food industry. Using what they call “hyperpaletability,” they don’t only spike food with sugar—white, brown, dextrose, sucrose, glucose, fructose, honey, maple syrup, agave syrup—they also put synthetic, drug-like chemicals in their foods to ensure perpetual consumption. Global increase in the use of palm oils, processed carbohydrates and mass media, rather than vigorous activity and exercise, are creating disease and causing early death. WHAT CAN YOU DO? Unfortunately, the data shows that common diets do not work. As many as 90 percent of those who’ve lost 25 pounds regain their weight within two years. Even worse, only 1 out of 50 manage to stay permanently slim. As little as a 10 percent reduction in excess body fat can positively affect blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, lipid (fats) control and, to some degree, mortality. Many of you reading this article have suffered the humiliation of a poor body image and have a long history of failed attempts to remedy your burden. Step one: Change your mindset. Taking the taste of food out of the equation along with the likes and dislikes of certain choices is a practical maneuver. Leaving the car keys at home and the elevator at rest also contributes to body movement and burning fat.

hen Fred said, “I’d love to get a shave,” I knew he was on the mend. That was true about all my patients in the hospital: Once they showed interest in grooming, I knew they were over the hump of anxiety about their recovery. They felt free enough and well enough to focus on their appearance. But when I heard skinny 16-year-old Sharon say, “I’m so gross! I wish I could cut myself in half,” I knew her body image reflected her mind’s torturous state of self-loathing—clearly not a healthy thing. When 7-year-old Aubrey, who lost her leg in a horseback riding accident, received a special little doll her parents customized to also have a prosthetic leg, she cried with joy. “She’s just like me,” she wailed. She felt deeply accepted and loved. Body image plays a huge role in how we perceive ourselves. Sometimes that image is accurate, sometimes not. Sometimes it’s benevolent, sometimes not. Either way, it reflects our sense of self and mirrors our state of self-acceptance.

THE BIOLOGY OF BEAUTY Body image generally centers around attractiveness. Biologically speaking, attraction plays a huge role in the procreation of the species. For most animals, “attractive” is synonymous with “healthy” for that very reason. Not so for us anymore. Today’s world is steeped in an appearance-oriented culture that pretty much says it’s more important to look good than it is to be healthy. Dentists and plastic surgeons profit off of our vanity as well as our shame. Larger-than-life movie stars and supermodels hold up an ideal to which we strive, and for which we feel bad if we fall short. But now hear this: normal teeth are not naturally whiterthan-white. Breasts are not naturally large and symmetrical. Baldness is real. And not all real women have curves. So, the image we strive for isn’t even natural anymore. Plastic-fantastic dominates the field. Even our attraction sensibilities have become warped. We have all been Photoshopped.

(Who determined what “good-looking” was, I don’t know). In 9 out of 10 juries, the attractive defendant was acquitted. But the less attractive defendant was only acquitted 2 out of 10 times. Is justice blind, or are we? Clearly, good looks yield an advantage. I knew a woman who got breast implants as “a business investment” and, in fact, her real estate business improved after her surgery. Was it simply because she felt more confident? Or did people treat her better because she was objectively more attractive? More people make dietary changes to lose weight than they do to improve their health. That’s even true of many guests who come to Hippocrates. Their real focus is on shedding pounds and not on shedding toxins. We’re here to set things right again.

Taking responsibility for your own and your family’s health against the mainstream eating habits fits that category. It’s righteous, so feel good about it. Notice I’m not saying, “Well, just don’t be an extremist about it.” That’s not my tack here. I’m telling you to be clear about what your topic is, then put the correct frame around it. The frame is more “pioneer” than “extremist,” if you ask me, or “empowered” or “enlightened.” Second point: Putting yourself between failing for setting your standards too high and failing for not being good enough is truly setting yourself up for failure, and calls for another point of re-framing. Set up your new choices with a framework of success, meaning simply, for each thing you do in the “right” direction, give yourself credit. Build up to the level you want. I’m not really saying take baby steps; just make sure if you take the leap, you define failure as “a step backward on my way to the goal,” which is reasonable. A success framework has kindness-to-self at its core. Did you punish your kids when they fell while learning to walk? No, you rewarded them and praised them when they kept trying after a fall and got it right. In all my years as a therapist at Hippocrates, I’ve met many successful people, and all of them learned to apply positive success frameworks around their efforts. You can do it, too.

I am scared now that I’ve been diagnosed with cancer again. I’m worried about the future of my children. My oldest is in college and the other two are still in school. They will be lost without me around. I’ve chosen a very good oncologist, and his concern makes me so afraid. What can I do?

Two of the methods I use are guided imagery and creative visualization. These mental tools can help you focus on images of healing and avoid the fear of a disastrous ending. Guided imagery uses the right brain—the creative side—to send constructive images to the left brain—the logical side—so it can change accordingly. Creative visualization is the mental technique of visualizing outcomes you hope for to produce positive results in your body. Your creative visualization may be of you attending your child’s graduation or playing with your future grandchildren. Your guided imagery can be of your oncologist telling you and your spouse that you’re cancer-free. Remember: your body is naturally equipped to heal. focus on your strengths rather than your weakness. In his book “The Power of Visualization,” Lee Pulos gives a marvelous example of famous inventer Nikola Tesla using creative visualization to perfect his invention. According to Pulos, Tesla visualized the components of his motor forming a finished product, and then he “mentally turned on the motor and let it run uninterrupted inside his head for three months.” He achieved his desires through positive visualization, and so can you. How can I align what I know to be right with what I feel like doing? I know the Hippocrates diet is the right way to live, but I still feel like having desserts sometimes. I end up feeling guilty, resentful or rebellious. How can I be at peace with my choices?

This is classic “big picture vs. immediate moment” stuff. I’m here to tell you the alignment you seek is possible. When you come up with a new “big picture” of how to eat, you add a new inner tension that disrupts the status quo of your former habits and calls for a stretch into new behavior. Live with that tension, because it’s a good one, unlike the tension of, say, a headache or a fight with your wife. This is the tension of growing pains. Be clear that you’re

making the stretch and not an external person imposing it on you. That should eliminate the rebellious attitude, which is based on rejecting external forces or influences. Nobody is to blame here. This is your choice. Get those inner sub-personalities on the same team. Guilt, rebellion, and resentment are based on breaking someone else’s rules or living according to someone else’s plan for you. This is your choice. Rejoice! This is your choice! So, even if you choose to eat dessert, it’s still your choice. Let the big-picture choice dominate the immediate-moment choice because it has your best interest at heart. Use those moments of “guilt,” “resentment,” and “rebellion” as pivotal moments where the big picture and the immediate moment encounter each other. Another way to think about this: “Do I want to be a big-picture choice-maker or an immediate-moment choice-maker?” What do you want for your kids? How can you help a kid become a big-picture choice-maker? Reward, praise, encouragement, reminders, loving acceptance—these are the main ingredients of good parenting. I’m saying this: let big-picture thinking dominate your inner landscape. Do it for yourself and all those good-parent actions that foster it.

he father of modern-day stress, Hans Selye, once said, “It’s not stress that kills us—it is our reaction to it.” His wisdom holds the key to understanding our continued failure to improve our response to everyday stress. If living in a cave on top of a remote mountain is not an option for you, you will need to accept stress as an integral part of life. What we need to figure out, then, is how to change our reaction to it.

However, as far as the longterm impact—you’re too late. Your body has already suffered a stress-driven physiological blow. If stress was a one-time event, your body would be perfectly designed to deal with it. However, not only does stress breed stress, but separately, stress accumulates. It’s not long before these repeated blows result in irreversible damage. As so accurately put by Selye, it is not the stress, but our response to it, that is so dangerous.

A CLOSER LOOK AT STRESS Our physiological reactions to stress include increased blood pressure, reduced blood supply to the digestive system and immune system suppression. So the solutions that occur to you are probably aimed at reducing these reactions. Techniques such as breathing, counting, physical exercise and meditation accomplish this somewhat. After a heated argument, for example, you may feel calmer once you take a walk.

We must train ourselves to identify and prevent the incoming attack. That means before—not after—the physiological expressions of stress. We need a paradigm shift in our approach to stress. If we are to prevent our natural physiological response to stress, we need to identify that we are impacted by it much earlier. We need to change our habitual emotional response to stress, because it’s what causes the responses, as stated by Selye, that kill.

HOW STRESS CAN CHANGE Anyone familiar with Krav-Maga, the self-defense, hand-fighting technique developed by the Israeli army, knows that recovery from a blow is very difficult. Therefore, Krav-Maga instructors train their students to identify an incoming attack early so they can prevent it through physical blockage or deception. We can apply that same principle when we fight stress.

WHAT DO EMOTIONS HAVE TO DO WITH IT? Recent neuroscience research reveals that under stressful circumstances, an interesting process takes place in your brain. When you are calm, the CEO of your brain is the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain right behind your forehead. This area is responsible for analysis, decision-making, controlling impulses and communicating.

However, as soon as you are exposed to information that causes you to stress out, a different area of your brain hijacks control. The new CEO—the amygdala—is primarily responsible for emotions, with fear at the forefront. Under this new CEO, you become emotionally driven and respond to the world as if you are under attack. So, the paradigm shift is to learn to identify your habitual emotional response in real time and stop it. This way you can prevent, rather than reduce, the impact of repeated physiological blows to your body. There is a unique group of professionals who do exactly that, and it makes the difference between life and death. These are Special Forces operatives trained to operate undercover deep behind enemy lines. Delta Force is one such example. During missions, operatives are repeatedly exposed to incredibly stressful circumstances. At the same time, they required to make split-second decisions in a focused and goal-oriented manner. If an operative is impacted by stress, his access to the prefrontal cortex is impaired and, as a result, his view of reality is amygdala-controlled. Here, the operative’s decisions are fear-driven and emotionally biased. Under these circumstances, Selye’s statement becomes even more tangible— the operative’s response to stress could actually kill him. In order to avoid this process, these operatives are uniquely mind-trained. This training enables them to identify their habitual response early and stop it from impacting their decisions.

here is our joy located? It’s an odd question. Perhaps you think joy is in your heart, or maybe you experience joy as a state of mind. It turns out, according to scientists, joy originates in the limbic system of the brain— the part of the brain that controls emotion, behavior, and long-term memory. Unlike happiness, which is a cognitive experience based in the brain’s neocortex, joy is an emotion we feel without conscious thought. We feel joy without thinking about it, and we can train our brains to feel it often.

EMOTIONS ARE HABITUAL Just like any repetitive action, our emotional state becomes a habit. For most of my life, my emotional habit was some version of fear. From the time I was a small child, I was a perpetual worrier. I have a vivid memory of being 4 years old in a restaurant with my mom and her then-boyfriend, who happened to be a professional clown. The clown was entertaining, the meal was my favorite, but I couldn’t stop worrying about everything. “Just relax, Kaia!” my mom implored me. “I’m trying as hard as I can!” I wailed. This is the story of my life. Although my outside often looked like the Garden of Eden, my inside often felt like Armageddon.

THE JOY PLAN

Our amygdala, the fear center in our brains, responds to perceived stress with the primal reactions of fight, flight, and freeze. When the amygdala is active, to be sure we have all the brain power we need to carry out this instinctual response, it limits activity in the prefrontal cortex, which happens to be where logical thought, clear decisions, and rational choices are generated. We simply can’t do our best thinking and best problem solving when we’re in a state of fear. Fear also turns on the sympathetic nervous system—the body’s project manager for the fight-or-flight response—which releases hormones, such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol, to pump us up for battle. The sympathetic nervous system accelerates our heart rate, increases blood pressure, slows digestion, constricts blood vessels, dilates the pupils, and can cause tunnel vision, shaking, and a number of other physical symptoms. Our bodies are incredible mechanisms with systems like this in place to help us stay safe, which is wonderful when we’re in danger. But here’s the catch: We can’t sustain high levels of fear for too long before our adrenal glands become depleted, our cells deteriorate from an overabundance of cortisol, and we become exhausted and sick.

I finally hit rock bottom shortly before my 40th birthday. I’d been making plans since I could talk, but I found myself examining what the point of all my planning really was. Ultimately, I simply wanted joy and, despite appearances, I rarely felt it. I knew I needed to break free from the grip of fear which had held me most of my life. So I made my ultimate plan: The Joy Plan, dedicating 30 days to the singular task of rewiring my brain to generate joy—in the hope that one month would change my entire life. Although I’d read books and blogs for years that told me to “relax,” “think positive,” “stay calm,” “don’t worry, be happy,” I still had no idea how to actually do that. So when I took the Joy Plan on as a full-fledged science experiment, I became determined to utilize the neurobiology behind the experience of joy to my advantage. What I found, to my delight, was that 30 days is long enough to form new habits, and the most important new habits boiled down to five easy daily actions. You don’t even need to set aside a whole month to give them a try. Like healthy eating, joy is a habit we must practice regularly in order to reap the benefits. By intentionally practicing thinking new thoughts, speaking new words, and taking new actions, I changed my experience of life. I am not happy all the time, but that’s not the point. I’ve finally figured out how to live in joy.

The fastest way to generate joy is to focus on things you appreciate. Every day, make a list, even if it’s in your head, of things for which you’re grateful. Feelings of gratitude release dopamine, a feelgood neurotransmitter in the brain. When you bathe your brain in this chemical experience, you’ll predispose yourself for more.

Mindfulness is simply the act of bringing your awareness to the present moment. Deep breaths calm the brain’s amygdala and train your brain and body to remain calm in the midst of swirling thoughts and emotions. With even a short daily practice, mindfulness can alter your brain in profound ways.

Four main neurochemicals generated in the brain are highly influential to the sensations we’ve come to associate with joy: endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, and oxytocin. The good news is these neurochemicals are easy to influence through daily actions, such as exercise, spending time outdoors, smiling more often, and giving hugs.

Thanks to the process of neuroplasticity, our brains develop neural pathways like well-worn highways they travel on regularly because they’re familiar. By choosing positive thoughts, words and actions at every opportunity—focusing on solutions rather than problems— you’re training your brain to form neural pathways for optimism, which is associated with greater joy.

Giving is an excellent way to generate joy. Acts of kindness release dopamine, for both the giver and the receiver. You can receive these feelgood benefits from giving something as small as a smile or a compliment, or as large as you can imagine.

The three exchange-traded fund (ETF) portfolios at InvestableBenchmarks.com may significantly improve your financial health. ational and global policymakers profess to set agricultural and food regulations on a scientific basis. Safety is always touted to be the top priority. Yet most often, when scientific evidence raises cause for concern, policy leaders place the desires of the industry —

Big Agriculture, Big Pharma, Big Chema and their affiliates — as the first priority, ignoring consumer concerns and the safety of our food supply and our children. For example, recent research practices on genetically engineered crops ignore all human and environmental impact lim-

itations. Previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican, have bowed to industry desires for GMO crops and pesticide use. The current administration seems no different. The latest rollbacks on regulations in 2017 have farmers feeling pleased with their favorable relationships in Washington, which continues to put profits before health. Agri-Technologies are also quickly outpacing any current regulations and policy oversight. There is resurgence in the use

of Glyphosate and other toxic chemicals in one sector, while gene editing, splicing and manipulation is rapidly becoming a new norm in many others. But in this newest technology explosion, no in-depth guidelines exist to protect our food at the most fundamental levels. The most recent articulation of this is CRISPR-Cas9, the next generation of biological pesticides or biopestides. Scientists claim this new chemical makes plants naturally resistant to pests, not by controlling the insertion of a gene in a plant, but by extracting a section of DNA to control the expression that attracts disease or pests. “We finally have a mandatory GMO labeling law in the US. However, the regulations to implement the law are nearly two years from finalization,” said Beth Clay, POP Campaign advocate in D.C. “It looks like the regulations may be outdated before they are even finalized, given the pace industry is moving towards CRISPR and the removal of genes rather than the insertion of them.” Gaps in government oversight for CRISPR food technologies are a huge concern as lines become increasingly blurrred and positions collide in the new technical debate reboot. These openings have invited an onslaught of supposed new food strains that are proceeding outside of any effective regulatory process. Bureaucratic regulators only ask for a surface reporting. They find it more efficient and advantageous to respond on a case-by-case basis with high-precision or controversial products. It is estimated that as many as 70 CRISPR crops are in the pipeline, and will soon appear in your neighborhood stores without any truth in labeling for consumers. These synthetic, recreated fields are quickly becoming the norm, as the clear-cutting of regulations puts our foods and our families at risk. “CropLife International reports they have counted 586 arthropod

species, 235 fungi and 252 weeds with resistance to at least one synthetic pesticide,” said Brian Clement. “Clearly this is the wrong direction on the freeway to health. A realignment of policies is needed; ones that clearly protect the true stakeholders of the world: We the People and We the Children.” From an even wider food safety watchdog lens, there remain some international efforts to put layers of protection in place.

We think this is ridiculous. To sacrifice decades of work on improving the quality of school lunches because students don’t want to eat whole wheat bread anymore is akin to relaxing education standards because students complain. For instance, the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which is an outgrowth of the Convention on Biological Diversity involving 170 countries, has established an international agreement, and is gradually gaining more support. It seeks to ensure the safe use, handling and transport of any modified organism from modern biotechnology that may have diverse effects on biological diversity. Although the pace is exceptionally slow, it is reassuring that these calls for responsible policy-making continue at so many levels. Locally, recent headlines shifted attention to food policies in schools. This past May, the agricultural secretary halted a mandate to decrease salt in school meals and opened the possibility to allow school food policies that undermine current health standards.
