TULSA, Oklahoma – Aunque muchos lo apodan ‘Dr. No’, el senador republicano por Oklahoma, el Dr. Tom Coburn, se ha ganado un nuevo sobrenombre: ‘Dr. Racista’. Y es que merece el doctorado con máximos honores, especialmente después de la parodia en la cual ha convertido la nominación de la jueza Sonia Sotomayor para la Corte Suprema de Justicia. La trayectoria xenofóbica de Coburn incluye el uso desmesurado de la frase “bebés anclas” para referirse a los hijos de indocumentados. ¡Y eso que es partero de profesión! . Pero fue el comentario dirigido a la jueza Sotomayor: “tienes que explicarme muchas cosas,” al estilo y acento de Ricky Ricardo, personaje interpretado por el cubano Desi Arnez en los 50’s, lo que estuvo fuera de lugar y por demás de muy mal gusto. Primero –bueno se supone- que en un comité del senado, cuya labor es examinar las credenciales de una nominada para la magistratura de la corte más importante de la nación, debería tener una seriedad y sobriedad absoluta, no convertirlo en un circo y mucho menos con comentarios raciales. Si Coburn trató de hacer un chiste, lo que le salió fue una vulgar morisqueta.

MEXICO CITY, Mexico – Police have captured four men accused of slaying 12 federal agents and dumping their bloodied bodies along a highway in President Felipe Calderon's home state of Michoacan, federal authorities said Wednesday. The head of the Federal Police's anti-drug unit, Ramon Pequeno, said the suspects belong to the La Familia drug cartel. The federal officers were killed the weekend of July 12, when the gang retaliated for the arrest of an alleged gang leader by launching more than a dozen attacks on federal forces in one of the boldest offensives yet against the government. TULSA, Oklahoma – Por tres días consecutivos los nativos de Oklahoma celebraron su herencia a través del Festival Powwow de Tulsa, cumpliendo con una tradición que ya lleva 57 años. “El club (Tulsa Indian Club) se formó en 1952, pero los orígenes del Festival Powwow en Tulsa comenzaron desde 1947, cuando un pequeño grupo de miembros de áreas tribales se empezaron a reunir en casas. Hoy tenemos un gran evento,” indicó Kelly Cloud, una de las voluntarias que recibía a los visitantes que llegaban a disfrutar del festival en el Spirit Center en Bixby. Los hispanos también estuvieron presentes y entre los exhibidores se encontraba Patricia Flores Paquin, originaria de Yucatán, México; la cual con orgullo mostraba típicas

“Somos parte de la solución a la crisis de salud que todos están experimentando, ya que proveemos cuidado médico accesible, a buen precio, y competente en el aspecto del idioma y las culturas ya que ofrecemos servicio en español,” añadió Paul.
Las metas del subsidio serán añadir dos nuevas posiciones; añadir 9.5 horás de servicio por semana, y servir a más pacientes con el nuevo personal y nuevo horario. Los sábados de 8 a.m. a 12:30 p.m., y los miércoles por la tarde, de 2:30 p.m. a 8:30 p.m., la clínica provee servicios de emergencias sin cita previa. Citas el mismo día y al día siguiente son disponibles todos los otros días que abre la clínica. Ahora será posible hacer citas por la tarde los jueves y viernes, para aquellos cuyo horario de trabajo no les permite ir al doctor. “En estos tiempos de retos económicos, mucha gente

TULSA, Oklahoma – El inclemente verano de Tulsa no detiene a los 150 niños que sábado a sábado se reúnen para jugar al fútbol, en una liga que de acuerdo con su fundador y entrenador Elías Arzú, es muy distinta a las demás. Arzú es de origen hondureño y la idea de crear una liga alternativa surgió en su infancia: “a los 14 años de edad me la pasaba jugando en el Bronx de Nueva York. Jugar al fútbol me mantenía ocupado y me enseñó muchas cosas, como por ejemplo la disciplina. Mi coach me ayudó muchísimo; por eso hemos creado ésta liga”. Las diferencias que Arzú y su extenso grupo de colaboradores resaltan en la llamada Legacy Soccer League, creada en el verano del 2008, es el carácter multicultural: hay niños y niñas, hispanos y ameri-
canos, con o sin recursos; “pero con algo en común: mucha energía,” apuntó su fundador. Las edades de los participantes abarcan desde los 4 hasta los 18 años. Entre el grupo de niños que participan hay algunos que no pueden cubrir los gastos de uniforme, seguro y entrenamiento. Estos son pagados por el aporte de los entrenadores y otros padres que colaboran para mantener la liga.

These are covered through donations from trainers and other parents who help maintain the league. All the teams are mixed; it is common to see boys and girls competing for the ball. “When we blend the teams, we learn more about each other and un-
derstand our differences. That makes us improve, not only as athletes but as people,” said Arzú. Shortline Dental offers appointments in the evening hours, same day appointments and walk-ins, and takes Sooner Care and Medicaid. All of these elements are important for the communities they work with. Only about 11 percent of dentists in Tulsa take Sooner Care.

Like their day-to-day business isn’t enough, Shortline believes it’s important to get involved with the community in other ways, too. They serve Tulsa schools as they participate in Partners in Education — helping out with the schools’ needs — and go in themselves to do dental screenings and education. They have contracts with the Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), Veterans, and OSU for the treatment of AIDS patients, and are partners with Community Health Connection (CHC), a primary care clinic for low income patients.
“Shortline Dental hopes to improve dental care by providing more access,” said Shortline’s office manager, David Riggs. The health disparity especially in north Tulsa is no secret, with a 2006 study by the Lewin Group indicating a 14-year shorter life span in some northern zip codes. With only about seven dentists in this part of town, the shortage also extends to healthy teeth.

TULSA, Oklahoma – La carrera por la alcaldía de Tulsa ha llegado con una amplia gama de candidatos: 11 republicanos, 5 demócratas y 3 independientes; las diferencias de edades van desde los 18 años hasta los 83; y finalmente las ocupaciones profesionales también son múltiples: abogados, camioneros y hasta ciclistas a tiempo completo. Lo único que no estuvo presente durante la jornada de inscripción de candidatos fue el factor hispano: cero representación. De los 19 candidatos que se disputarán la silla municipal, solamente 4 tienen portales de información activos o alguna forma de conexión directa con los electores; los 15 restantes todavía no han presentado teléfonos, páginas de internet o programa de gobierno. La republicana Anna Lara Falling es la única mujer que figura entre la lista de candidatos. Con experiencia política en el ámbito municipal –fue concejal en el año 1998- busca transformar a Tulsa mediante “la única entidad en ésta comunidad que tiene la magnitud y la fuerza para abordar los problemas de base de la ciudad: nuestras iglesias,” según dijo vía correo electrónico. El senador demócrata y ahora candidato a la alcal-
día, Tom Adelson -quien votó por la ley inmigratoria 1804- indicó que trabajará para ser una voz para toda la ciudad. Con respecto a la comunidad hispana, Adelson expresó su satisfacción “por la oportunidad de hablarle a los lectores del Hispano de Tulsa,” agregando que “reconozco la enorme contribución que sus lectores hacen para el beneficio de Tulsa. Ustedes son importantes para la economía de nuestra ciudad. Creo en una ciudad que incluye a todos y donde todos tienen la oportunidad de trabajar, ser bien educados y tratados con respeto”. TULSA, Oklahoma – The race for city mayor has arrived with a wide range of candidates: 11 Republicans, five Democrats and three Independents. Ages range from 18 to 83, and occupations are varied: lawyers, truck drivers and even bicyclists. The only thing missing during the official filing period was the Hispanic factor, which had zero rep-
resentation. Of the 19 candidates, only four have active Web sites or some sort of direct connection with voters. The other 15 have not yet offered their phone numbers, Web sites or platforms. Republican Anna Falling is the only woman among the candidates. With experience in city politics – she was a City Councilor in 1998 – she proposes changing Tulsa through “the only entity in this community that has the magnitude and fortitude to tackle the city’s foundation problems – our churches,” according to a statement sent by e-mail. Democratic state senator and now candidate for mayor, Tom Adelson, who voted for House Bill 1804, the immigration law, said he would strive to represent the whole city.
As for the Hispanic community, Adelson said: “I am very pleased to be given this opportunity to speak to the readers of Hispano de Tulsa. I recognize the enormous contribution your readers make to the well-being of Tulsa. You are integral to the economy of our city. I believe in a city which is inclusive, where everyone has the opportunity to work, be well-educated and is treated with respect.” Since there is more than one candidate among both the Democrats and Republicans, the hopefuls will compete within their parties in primary elections on Sept. 8. TULSA, Oklahoma – El pasado 10 de julio la secretaria del Departmento de Seguridad Nacional, Janet Napolitano, anunció una serie de cambios al programa federal 287(g), una herramienta que desde el 30 de septiembre de 1996, ha enlazado agencias inmigratorias con centros locales de protec-
ción ciudadana. Tulsa forma parte de las 66 jurisdicciones que han suscrito un Acuerdo de Entendimiento entre Inmigración y el departamento del sheriff. Este acuerdo fue aprobado el 9 de julio del 2007 y fue suscrito por el comisario Stanley Glanz; la entonces presidenta de la junta de comisionados de Tulsa, Randi Miller y la ex asistente al secretario del Departamento de Seguridad Nacional, Julie Myers. El documento local, así como los otros 65 que existen a nivel nacional, serán sometidos a revisión y deberán acoplarse a las nuevas directrices en un período que no podrá exceder a 3 años desde la fecha original de su apro-
bación. El acuerdo local indica que los oficiales participantes del programa 287(g) tienen “el poder y la autoridad de interrogar a cualquier persona que se crea es un inmigrante … el poder de arrestar sin orden judicial a cualquier inmigrante”.

So, hopefully if the Department of Homeland Security plans on monitoring the complaints, this will stop the 287-g officers from randomly using their authority to arrest noncriminals.” The sheriff’s office in Tulsa did not return calls seeking comment.
