FS - Skills for Working Life

A supported introduction to the world of employment and college life, including life skills, sports, social skills, English, maths and games.

As well as learning a variety of useful life skills, including gardening, catering and hospitality, car maintenance and household DIY, you will also be involved in a range of wider activities, such as a youth enterprise scheme where you run your own business as part of a group. There are also a variety of trips and visits, plus fundraising activities and opportunities to socialise and take part in games and sports.

This is a general, Entry Level, skills related course which provides you with the opportunity to experience and learn about a variety of occupational areas before progressing into further education or into the workplace. You will be supported in developing the skills needed to help prepare you for the world of work or further study, including your English, maths, communication, healthy living and social skills.

Qualification City & Guilds Certificate in Skills for Working Life – Entry Level 2 & 3

Duration One year

Course Content You will cover a diverse range of topics throughout your course, including: • Catering & Hospitality Skills • Car Maintenance Skills • Household DIY Skills • Preparing for the World of Work • Developing your Maths & English

Assessment is continuous, with assignments, projects and practical work. All full-time students are required to study maths and English at the appropriate level. Please see page 6 for more details. Entry Requirements • No formal entry qualifications are required • All applicants will undergo an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Places will be offered following a satisfactory interview • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Progression Progression routes shown are dependent on successful completion of qualifications and meeting entry criteria.

Study options may include Foundation Studies courses in the following subjects: • Hospitality & Catering • Employability Skills • Construction & Building Services • Computing & IT • Childcare and Health & Social Care

Employment options may include: • Various roles in retail, horticulture, catering and in the voluntary/charity sector

Develop your confidence and basic skills for progression into employment or further study.

Many of our students have commented that studying these courses at the College is ‘very different from school’. They have enjoyed learning, have gained confidence and are respected as individuals. They also enjoy the weekly opportunities to socialise and be active. Typical activities include playing football, snooker and pool, taking part in boxing training sessions or just going for a coffee and socialising.

Our Employability Skills courses, offered at Level 1 and Level 2, consist of a number of activities and subjects, including volunteering, personal and social development, preparation for work and work experience. Students will also get the opportunity to improve their literacy and numeracy skills, build their knowledge and confidence and discover more about their options for employment or further study at college, with the aim of successfully preparing them to secure a job or to progress to a specialist vocational course at the College.

Course Content At Level 1 you will study subjects such as: • Presentation Skills • Literacy & Numeracy • IT • CV Preparation • Work Experience Opportunities • Personal & Social Development At Level 2 you will develop your skills and knowledge further by studying subjects such as: • Career Planning & Job Applications • Effective Skills, Qualities & Attitudes for Learning & for Work • Communicating with Others in the Workplace • Introduction to Leadership/Principles of Setting Up a Business

Entry Requirements • At Level 1, no formal entry qualifications are required • At Level 2, four GCSEs at grade 3 (grade D) or above (to include maths and English), or successful completion of any suitable Level 1 qualification (e.g. Level 1 Diploma in Employability Skills) • All applicants will undergo an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy • Places will be offered following a satisfactory interview • Applicants will be expected to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to the chosen subject area

Study options may include: • Progression to a Level 1 or Level 2 course of your choice at the College including Level 2 Diploma in Employability Skills • Foundation Studies in a different subject area Employment options may include: • Employment opportunities in unskilled, skilled or semi-skilled occupations after successful completion of specialist vocational Level 1 or Level 2 qualifications at the College • Access to apprenticeships
