MICHIGAN STATE POLICE HEADQUARTERS LANSING, MICHIGAN

The design process of the Michigan State Police Headquarters presented many challenges, including the constraints involved in construction on a busy downtown site. The central location required consideration of the security needs of the installation. The Hobbs+Black team addressed this by providing a hardened structure, facade, and containment wall. Public entry to the building is via a landscaped flag plaza at the site corner. The main lobby design transports the visitor from traditional exterior into modern office interior. The requirements of an efficient and compact office layout are met through a combination of high-tech flooring and reconfigurable office systems furniture. Environmental awareness influenced the architecture and interiors, landscaping, and the design of the energy efficient engineering systems. The project is capable of achieving LEED certification. A major component of the site improvements focused on the high security parking lot, which consisted of impact decorative fencing around parking areas, precast concrete bollards, security card access system with highspeed automated impact gates, and security guard booth. > IIDA Design Excellence Award, Government Over 10,000 sf > Masonry Institute of Michigan Presidents Choice Award 2011

Various simulated activities provide outdoor recreation experiences, while exhibits and displays feature the natural and cultural resources and outdoor activities found in Michigan’s parks and recreation areas. > Winner of AIA Huron Valley Honor Award 2016 > CREW Impact Awards: Special Impact Project of the Year 2015 > ENR Best Project Renovation/Restoration 2014
