HITACHI REASEARCH & DEVELOPMENT INNOVATION CENTER FARMINGTON HILLS, MICHIGAN

Hitachi America, Research and Development Division (R&D) was established in 1989 as part of Hitachi’s strategy to locate research centers close to industry-leading advanced markets. After Hobbs+Black designed the addition to the office portion of the Farmington hills complex, it was decided that the R&D wing was also in need of a refresh and expansion. The exterior update balances sleek and economical design, meanwhile blending into the rest of building facade. The interior portion of the renovation focused on leveraging an existing atrium running the length of the building to increase natural lighting and create elegant product showcase spaces.

ARBOR RESEARCH CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN

Hobbs+Black is currently designing a new office headquarters for the research based company of Arbor Research in Ann Arbor Charter Township. The facility will be 50,000 square feet with a possible expansion of 40,000 in the future. The site is planned for 90,000, so future infrastructure requirements are considered. Hobbs+Black completed extensive programming, including town hall meetings, interactive poster feedback with employees, and online surveys. The new headquarters will maximize the views of the site and provide access to daylight for each employee. The floor plan gives employees opportunities to collaborate and have quiet individual work.

AGRO-CULTURE LIQUID FERTILIZERS ST. JOHNS, MICHIGAN

Agro-Culture Liquid Fertilizers sought out a team that could design and build a facility that would aesthetically merge the great traditions of farming with the cutting-edge technology that now pervades the agriculture industry. Hobbs+Black’s winning design aptly created a design with elements that suggest a classic barn-like structure from one viewpoint, while from a different vantage point suggest a modern office with renewable and sustainable elements. The facility includes over 50,000 square feet of space, with ample offices for owners and employees. Additionally, the facility contains meeting rooms, a training center, an employee kitchen, research and development area, and a fitness room.

CONTROL GAGING PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN

Control Gaging engineers, designs, and manufactures precision gages for machine tools in the new facility. The construction consisted of steel framing with an envelope of concrete masonry, glass curtainwall at the office, and insulated metal panels at manufacturing areas. The manufacturing space includes one overhead loading dock with seal and one grade level dock door. The new facility improves efficiency in Control Gaging’s current operations and offers the company room for future growth. It also offers natural recreation options to employees; the company plans to add a bike path around the facility and plant more than 200 trees on the site.

MC3 MEDICAL DEVICES DEXTER, MICHIGAN

Hobbs+Black was hired to renovate a 46,000 square foot tilt-up concrete industrial building for MC3, a medical devices company. Constructed in the 1980s, the building had been vacant and was showing its age with leaking building joints and windows with bad seals. MC3 required office space for 60-80 staff members, as well as wet labs, clean room manufacturing labs, and warehouse areas. A contemporary entry was designed to complement the massive south elevation of the building. In line with MC3’s desire to host visitors, a video wall was added in the entryway. As part of the workplace design, Hobbs+Black created modern spaces including conference, training, and break rooms with integrated communications, audio visual, and teleconferencing systems.

KOJAIAN EARHART ANN ARBOR TOWNSHIP, MICHIGAN

In the spring of 2016, The Kojaian Companies, known for anticipating market demands across several sectors, retained Hobbs+Black to design a modern speculative Class A-B office research building on the west edge of the Domino’s Farms Office Park, adjacent to M-23 North. The building design is a vibrant composition of brick and glass with the latest research and development facility amenities. The site design focused on heavily planting the site with new deciduous and evergreen trees and includes traffic improvements to Plymouth Road that will improve circulation to M-23 and across the bridge to the City of Ann Arbor.

FREUDENBERG NORTH AMERICA PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN

To support increased success and demand in the North American market, Freudenberg needed to develop a new Regional Headquarters for its US operations. An existing, single story office/ warehouse building comprised of 24,000 square feet was selected as the new headquarters. The program called for 10,500 square feet of office space, sectioning off the remaining portions of the building into two high-bay lease spaces. The overall design is a clean and contemporary office space combining collaborative break out spaces, open office, private office, and flexible conferencing areas. The facade was updated to incorporate the Freudenberg brand and to improve thermal and weather performance with a tall, day-lit vestibule. Combining the design aesthetic goals with the challenges of the depth of the facility, skylights and light tubes were incorporated to improve natural daylight throughout the facility.

TRUCK-LITE HEADQUARTERS & TECH CENTER SOUTHFIELD, MICHIGAN

Hobbs+Black has been retained to design a new two-story 40,000-square-foot headquarters and technology center to be located at Civic Center Drive in Southfield, MI. Hobbs+Black will be providing architectural services from concept design through construction for this fast-paced project. Occupancy is anticipated in 2020. The site faces the Lodge Freeway and Civic Center Drive, offering the owner prominent visibility as well as views of a tree-lined wetland to the northwest. Early design concepts suggest a campus layout that winds through the site with parking areas branching out from a common drive. The economical building design proposes a modern, high-tech influence while balancing the context of nearby high-rise masonry buildings.
