The Mall of San Juan is a contemporary two-level regional mall with 650,000 square feet of leasable space anchored by a 100,000 square foot Saks Fifth Avenue and a 138,000 square foot Nordstrom. The project also included the construction of three independent parking structures. As architect of record, Hobbs+Black worked with Taubman to create a vibrant and rich shopping environment that responds to the local culture. A roof top dining terrace with supporting lease space provides space for shoppers to enjoy the Caribbean breeze while the two main shopping levels organically flow from each end of the center. The center is approximately 612,000 square feet and houses three anchor stores as well as 85-90 stores and restaurants. As an open air, outdoor lifestyle center, the mall was designed and built to provide a park-like atmosphere. A number of elements were included to contend with Michigan’s changing seasons and sometimes harsh conditions. The extensive paver system, a focal point of the mall, incorporates a snow melt system. A 30-foot fireplace provide a place to warm up, and wide canopies provide additional shelter from the elements. Bocce ball courts and a children’s play park provide opportunities for recreation among the shopping center. Three different fountains, including an interactive 85-foot pop jet fountain, provide ambiance as well as entertainment. Adding significantly to the park like environment, shoppers are encouraged to bring their dogs, with multiple dog comfort areas providing water and plastic bags.
