PURPOSE
VANTAGE AIRPORT GROUP Stuart Steeves Matthew Thomas Filip Lemmens Ali Istchenko Frank Scremin
The purpose of the workshop on November 19, 2015 was to develop a direction for the interior design of the new terminal to evoke a sense of place. The team reviewed
the user demographic to keep the focus on what New
York means to the audience. At the workshop, the group agreed on three verbal concepts that will be crafted into
a thematic statement. This statement (page 21) will guide
STANTEC Stanis Smith Kent Goodwin
design decisions regarding color, texture, materials, art, graphics, and digital displays—all with the intent of instilling a sense of New York into the space.

The design of LaGuardia Airport’s New Unified Terminal Structure is defined by juxtaposition and vibrancy, surprise and movement, materiality and textures, woven together to pay tribute to the spirit of New York City.

EXCELLENCE STATEMENT The above ideas resonated with the workshop team, but
not as informative to the thematic statement, but rather
as a definition of success. That is, if we capture the essence
of New York and create the best airport experience in the world, these qualities will come forth in the space, for
visitors and New Yorkers.

23 Excellence Statement
What evokes a Sense of Place?
A sense of place is a result of a choreographed, multi-layered and unique experience.
It’s created by blending the aspirational with the functional— melding the physical with the sentimental.
It’s a grounding force that supports intuitive direction.
It’s emotion and animation; color and culture; scale, context and orientation. It’s connections and memories; movement and pace; sights, sounds, and smells.
IT CONNECTS A PERSON TO A PLACE, CREATING LASTING MOMENTS AND MEMORIES.
