As the design team was beginning work on a new headquarters for Cargill Protein, the subsidiary was going through a rebrand from Cargill Meat Solutions. The signage and experiential graphics had to support this rebrand, and the group’s own unique personality, within the Cargill family. Working collaboratively with interiors, architecture and landscape, the branded graphics and signage become inseparable from experience. The design theme “families feeding families” drove the approach and ties employees to others in the protein process, such as the farmers, ranchers, chefs, scientists and engineers. Working with local artists and materials enhance the sense of place and connection with the Cargill Protein brand, like the rancher’s rope that is used to create an abstracted threedimensional landscape mural or the custom triptych of the rolling Flint Hills. Materials are sourced locally and reference the landscape, animals, textures, materials and details that are found in the supply chain. The creative application of Cargill brand standards further connects the group to the larger Cargill brand for global consistency and local relevance. Hand-drawn sketches are married with corporate brand guidelines to create a regional expression that is both authentic and humble. Together, they create a holistic picture and authentic expression that is uniquely Cargill Protein.

We regularly conduct Visioning Sessions with project stakeholders to fully explore a variety of ideas and inspiration. Through this, we created a Visioning Summary for Cargill Protein which served as a resource for the project moving forward. Here are snippets from this report, which clarified the message and story behind the new headquarters.

HOK developed a theme for each area based on visitors touring the building and the corresponding story that will be told. Handdrawn sketches are married with corporate brand guidelines to create a regional expression of brand that is both authentic and humble.

Process HOK's Experience Design group works directly in renderings and 3D models to accurately portray the designs and coordinate with the interior designers. Here, the reception desk is designed with integration from all disciplines, with corresponding final images.

A 28-foot wide custom art display of ceramic plates symbolizes where Cargill Protein’s work meets the consumer—on the plate. It serves as the backdrop to the open central stair that connects all floors. The plates were commissioned from local ceramicist, Greg Lathrop and are all hand-thrown using local clay. A subtle green gradient in the glaze echoes the forms of the Flint Hills and slowly moves up the stair.

Sustainability Rooms At the far end of the conference center, three rooms honor Cargill’s commitment to sustainability. These curated, themed spaces speak to animal, earth and legacy, with custom tables and millwork, unique environments and imagery that visualizes Cargill’s sustainability priorities.

Trading Floor Born out of a work session in which one of Cargill’s employees mentioned how motivated he is by the hard work the company’s plant workers do, these images showcase Cargill’s plant employees. This imagery is intended to connect trading floor employees to the whole Protein process and celebrate fellow staff members who are often working behind the scenes. ARTWORK DETAIL E
