Vibrant Neighborhoods Floreciente celebra el orgullo de los vecinos y les facilita una voz adicional Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El Proyecto Vibrant Neighborhoods Floreciente (Vecindades Vibrantes) de WQPT es un proyecto que ofrece los vecinos de Floreciente una voz adicional para expresar su orgullo del lugar donde viven y en el mismo tiempo les da oportunidad para compartir que significante es para ellos su vecindario. “Ahora Floreciente es una comunidad donde la mayoría de la población es hispana pero este sigue siendo el area donde las personas de diferentes lugares llegan a poner sus raíces en los Quad Cities y esta área es una de las comunidades de los Quad Cities con mas riqueza cultural,” dijo Tar Macias, el coordinador de proyecto para WQPT. El primer elemento del proyecto son pláticas comunitarias. El segundo elemento de proyecto es una serie de entrevistas en video con los residentes del Floreciente actuales y del pasado. WQPT va a crear

una serie de anécdotas en video que van a ser transmitidas por WQPT y van estar disponibles en los redes sociales de WQPT y Hola America News. Las anécdotas serán transmitidas empezando al finales de esta primavera y a lo largo de este año. Miguel Rosas, un empresario local, fue una de las personas en el primer grupo de las entrevistas sobre la comunidad de empresarios en Floreciente para Anécdotas de Vibrant Neighborhoods. “Empecé mi negocios en el 2007. De hecho, Carmen Fuentes tiene una historia muy interesante que cuenta de su lucha contra obstáculos grandes de la vida y que refleja la fuerza de la gente que hace al Floreciente tan especial. Busque su anécdota donde ella comparte su historia que pronto será disponible en WQPT. En lo que se trata de las pláticas comunitarias, el primer evento tomó lugar 25 de febrero en el Centro Esperanza y el tema fue la educación. Más de 70 personas participaron en este evento. Enseñamos el documental, parte de serie de documentales Independent Lens de PBS, llamado “Skiping Up,” este documental que sigue a un grupo de estudiante de 8º grado de San Antonio mientras que ellos terminan con su participación en el Programa Partners de su Secundaria. Este programa es un proyecto exitoso que previene que los jóvenes dejen los estudios y esta programa generó interés nacional como un modelo para las escuelas con gran población latina. Muchos temas de los que se vieron en este documental son similares a los asuntos que los niños de Floreciente enfrentan también. Participantes en este evento tuvieron una plática apasionada que acabó con la identificación de varios los problemas específicos e ideas para solucionarlos. Después de este evento muchos participantes de la primera plática se quedaron con el deseo de involucrarse más en su comunidad. Ellos también expresaron la necesidad de tener más eventos parecidos. El primer evento fue un éxito. Aquellos que quieren participar en la siguiente plática comunitaria, por favor venga el jueves 4 de mayo en la Biblioteca Pública de Moline a las 6 PM. El tema será la

“Participación Cívica”. Antes de la plática enseñaremos un fragmento de la película “Willie Vasquez Your Vote is your Voice” (Willie Vasquez Su Voto es Su Voz). Después del documental hay planes de hablar sobre como la comunidad latina puede participar más en el proceso político. La Serie fotográfica de 100 Por Anastassia Zvoryguina

En el 2014, cuando el fotógrafo Jaawan Arrington decidió tratar de repetir el reto de 100 Días Felices de uno de sus compañeros, él ni siquiera imaginó que de esta experiencia iba a nacer un proyecto. The 100 Series (La Serie de 100) de Jaawan Arrington fue bien aceptada por muchos en la comunidad y gracias a este proyecto el fotógrafo pudo conocer mucha gente interesante y aprender un poco de ellos y que es lo que los hace, lo que ellos son. Antes de lanzar el proyecto de The 100 Series, Jaawan Arrington estaba documentando los 100 días de algo positivo que le haya ocurrido a él cada día durante este periodo del tiempo. “Mientras que estaba acabando con este proyecto, la gente me estaba preguntando que tenía planeado para el próximo proyecto,” el fotógrafo Arrington nos contó. “Honestamente, no tenía deseo de hacer nada después de esto, pero decidí retarme a mí mismo y ver que más puedo hacer.” Después de pensar y buscar, el Sr. Arrington encontró un proyecto que se trataba de conocer gente nueva. “Me gustó la idea de salirme de mi elemento, conocer a alguien que nunca conocí, tomar su foto, y compartirla con el mundo. Este proyecto fue llamado 100 Strangers (100 extraños),” el Sr. Arrington explicó. Mientras el Sr, Arrington estaba trabajando con este proyecto, su amigo lo animaba a seguir haciendo más cosas parecidas. También, este era el tiempo cuando el Sr. Arrington dijo que él estaba notando que al parecer la gente se estaba poniendo más

negativa y en las redes sociales la gente expresaba mucha negatividad y enojo. “Sentí la necesidad de recordar a la gente sobre todas las cosas positivas que también estaban pasando alrededor de ellos,” el fotógrafo Jaawan Arrington nos contó. “Entonces noté que puedo usar esos proyectos como una manera para hacer que las cosas sucedan. Desde entonces The 100 Series nació en el verano del 2015 y empecé a entrevistar la gente para mi proyecto de 100 Days of Awesome (100 Días de Gente Estupenda).” El Proyecto significa lo que insinúa su nombre, o sea el proyecto de fotógrafo tiene 100 fotos y lo toma alrededor de 4 meses para terminar. Para el Proyecto de 100 Days of Awesome People (100 Días de Gente Estupenda), que también fue el primer proyecto de Arrington, el fotógrafo se juntó y habló con 100 personas de Quad Cities que él conoce y quienes hacen cosas maravillosas para compartir su actitud positiva con todo el mundo. “Yo los entrevisté sobre por que ellos escogieron el ser exitosos y que hicieron para ser exitosos,” el Sr. Arrington dijo. “La meta del proyecto fue demostrar que una persona regular puede, igual o hasta más, tener una gran vida y hasta mejor que la de un famoso o atleta conocido que vemos en la televisión. Hay gente maravillosa que cruza nuestro camino cada día y nunca lo sabremos al menos que hablemos con ellos.” Actualmente, el Sr. Arrington está trabajando en el proyecto llamado 100 Shades (100 Tonos). Para este proyecto Jaawan Arrington está pidiendo que la gente piense en un objeto que “pueda tener el valor

sentimental, o define a una persona lo que es junto con una explicación por que es así.” El Sr. Arrington explica que cada día nosotros vemos y comunicamos con mucha gente, pero es rara vez que sabemos sobre que puede causar sentimientos fuertes o que cosa los hace lo que son hoy. Según el fotógrafo el proyecto de 100 Shades busca el mostrar todo esto por medio del arte de la fotografía. Vibrant Neighborhoods Floreciente features residents and their pride of the neighborhood, gives them an additional voice By Anastassia Zvoryguina The Project Vibrant Neighborhoods Floreciente by WQPT is a project that offers the neighbors from Floreciente and additional voice to showcase their pride in their place of residence and at the same time gives them opportunity to share what this neighborhood means to them. “Now a heavily Hispanic neighborhood, Floreciente (which means “blooming” in Spanish) is still a gate-

way for many people from different backgrounds setting roots in the Quad Cities, and it’s one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in the area,” said Tar Macias, the Project coordinator for WQPT. The first element of the project is the community screenings and discussions. The second element of the project is a series of interviews on video with current and past Floreciente residents and stakeholders. WQPT will be creating a series of Vignettes that will

be broadcast on WQPT and made available through WQPT and Hola America News social media. The Vignettes will be broadcasted later this spring and throughout the year. Miguel Rosas a local entrepreneur was one of the people on the first group of interviews about the business community of Floreciente for the Vibrant Neighborhoods Vignettes. “I started my business in 2007. I picked the neighborhood because there are a lot of Hispanic people in the

neighborhood,” he said about his decision to pick the Floreciente to start his business. “I know Spanish, and I’m a barber and that was something that the neighborhood needed and I figured it would a perfect location” Another person that participated in the interviews was Carmen Fuentes proprietor of Carmen’s Jewerly on 4th Avenue. “I’ve had my business here in the Floreciente neighborhood for about 24 years. door for 5 years then I got the idea to open up my own business,” she shared. Actually, Carmen Fuentes has a great story that talks of overcoming difficulties and reflects the resiliency that makes the people of Floreciente special. Look for her vignette where she shares that story soon available on WQPT. As for the screenings, the first screening event was held on February 25 at the Esperanza Center. Over 70 people participated in this event. The film, a part of the documentary series Independent Lens from PBS, was called “Skipping Up,” which follows a group of eighth grade students in San Antonio as they finish their year in the Middle School Partners Program, a successful dropout-prevention project that has generated national interest as a model for schools

with significant Latino populations. Many issues discussed in this film were similar to the ones that children from Floreciente face. Participants in this event had a passionate discussion that led to identifying the specific problems and coming up with ideas for solutions. As a result of this event, many participants of the first screening left with a desire to get more involved in their community. They also expressed the need for more events similar to this one. The first event was a success. Those who wish to participate in the next screening similar to the first one, please come and join the discussion on Thursday May 4 at the Moline Public Library at 6PM. The topic of discussion will be Civic Engagement. Before the discussion, there will be a 17 minute excerpt from the

film “Willie Velasquez Your Vote is your Voice.” After the film the plans are to discuss how the Latino community can get more involved in the political process. Pizza and refreshments will be provided free of charge. “What we hope to achieve through this program is to provide a wider visibility of the Floreciente neighborhood to the Greater Quad City area, help facilitate community change, and to help tell their story,” Mary Pruess, WQPT General Manager, said. Armando Castro Maneja El Toro Loco en Monster Jam Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Monster Jam está de regreso en nuestra área. Prepárese para los retumbos de los motores fuertes, lodo levantado por las llantas enormes y camionetas monster compitiendo por una victoria. Este año Mosnter Jam va a ser en el fin de semana de 6 y 7 de mayo y Hola America tuvo la oportunidad de hablar con Armando Castro, el conductor de El Toro Loco. Armando Castro es de Whittier, California y él es uno de los conductores más jóvenes de Monster Jam. Este joven de 20 años se enamoró de Monster Jam después de asistir a un evento en Anaheim, CA, cuando él tenía solo 6 años. “Soñé con ser uno,” Castro dijo sobre su deseo de ser el conductor de Monster Jam desde esa primera vez que miró las camionetas monster. Él nunca pudo imaginar que este sueño podría convertirse en realidad un día de estos. Mientras soñaba con ser parte de Monster Jam, Castro tomó en serio el consejo de

sus padres y se graduó de la preparatoria. Después de su graduación, Castro siguió estudiando para recibir su certificado de EMT (técnico en emergencias médicas por sus siglas en inglés). “Muchas gente no sabe que soy EMT,” Armando Castro dijo. Mientras trabajaba de EMT, se le presentó la oportunidad de alcanzar su sueño. Él se encontró con alguien y gracias a este encuentro su destino tomó un nuevo curso. Él decidió probar la suerte y tuvo una audición para ser parte de Monster Jam. Tal vez los jueces vieron algo especial en este joven porque a pesar que él no tiene experiencia en motocross le dieron el lugar en el equipo y Castro pasó el verano en la Universidad de Monster Jam ubicada en Paxton, Illinois. “Primera vez y primer entrenamiento. Ellos nos enseñaban a manejar,” Castro contó de su experiencia en la Universidad de Monster Jam. Después del entrenamiento, Castro estaba listo para manejar su camioneta hacia

la victoria. Aunque él apenas empezó este año, él ya tuvo algunas victorias. Una de ellas le da mucho orgullo y esta pasó durante el primer trimestre y él ganó el tercer lugar acabando en la compañía de dos conductores con mucha experiencia. “Uno de ellos era un conductor de motocross y otro un conductor de NASCAR,” Castro compartió con orgullo. Él está empezando su carrera con Monster Jam, pero esto no tiene que decir que él planea dejar su trabajo de EMT. De hecho, por el momento él se está esforzando para hacer los dos trabajos en el mismo tiempo. “Mis padres están felices y me apoyan. Ellos están orgullosos,” Armando Castro compartió. “Es un honor y orgullo representar a la comunidad hispana,” él agregó. Él también aconsejó a los demás a nunca dejar de soñar, no meterse en problemas y terminar los estudios. “No te rindas. Yo logré mucho en mi vida y apenas es un comienzo. Tengo una vida entera enfrente de mí. Nunca te rindas y no

te metas en problemas,” Armando Ochoa ofreció de consejo. Él también invita a toda la comunidad a venir a Monster Jam. “El evento es divertido y ruidoso. Es un diferente tipo de evento pero es bueno,” Castro describió Monster Jam en sus propias palabras. “Nada es escrito y nada esta planeado. Es entretenimiento, pero al final del día es una competición entre 8 conductores.” Planee asistir a Monster Jam del 6 al 7 de mayo y venga temprano para la Pit Party, donde usted puede conocer a los conductores, hacerles preguntas, tomar fotos y hasta caminar en la pista donde pasa toda la acción. The 100 Series By Anastassia Zvoryguina When in 2014 photographer Jaawan Arrington decided to try to repeat one of his coworker’s 100 Happy Days photo challenge, he did not even imagine that from that one experience a whole new project will be born. Now Jaawan Arrington’s The 100 Series has found a lot of positive feedback from many in the community and thanks to this project the photographer got to meet many interesting people and learn about them and what makes those people who they are. Before launching his The 100 Series project, Jawaan Arrington was simply documenting the 100 days of something positive that might have happened to him every day during that period of time. “As I was finishing that project, people kept asking me what I was going to do next,” photographer Arrington said. “I honestly had no desire to do anything after that, but I decided to stretch myself and see what else I could do.” After some thinking and searching, Mr. Arrington found a project that had to do with meeting new people. “I liked the idea of getting out of my comfort zone, getting to know someone I’ve never met before, taking their picture, and sharing it with the world. That Project was called 100 Strangers,” Mr. Arrington explained. While Mr. Arrington was working on this project, his friend encouraged him to keep on making more. Also, that was the time when Mr. Arrington said that he was noticing people seemed to be getting negative and a lot of social media platforms were filled with negativity and anger. “I felt a need to remind people of all the positive things that were also happening around them,” photographer Jaawan Arrington told. “I then saw I could use these projects as a way to make things happen. From there to The 100 Series was born in the summer of 2015 and I began interviewing people for my 100 Days of Awesome Project.” As the name suggest each of this photographer’s projects have 100 entries and it takes him about 4 months or so to complete. For 100 Days of Awesome People

Project, which also was his first, Mr. Arrington met and talked to 100 people in Quad Cities that he knew and who do some great things that makes positivity the winner at the end of the day. “I interviewed them about why they choose to be successful and what they do to become successful,” Mr. Arrington said. “The goal of that project was to show that the every day person can just as, if not more, larger than life than any celebrity or athlete they see on television. That there are amazing people who walk past us every single day and we’ll never know unless we talk to them.” At this point Mr. Arrington is working on the project called 100 Shades. For this project Jaawan Arrington is asking people to think of the object that “either has a sentimental value, or defines them as a person along with explanation why.” As Mr. Arrington explains we see and interact with a lot of people every day, but more often than not we do not know what sets those around us off or what are some things that make them into a person they are today. And according to this photographer the 100 Shades project is trying to show these things through the art of photography. Sábado,6 de mayo, el restaurante mexicano y cantina Ganzo’s en Davenport, IA tendrá el evento de Cinco de Mayo más grande de los Quad Cities y todo empezará con la carrera Cinco de Mayo de 5 Kilómetros de Ganzo’s. Los niños pueden escoger una carrera divertida entre ½ o 1 milla llamada Sombrero Shuffle con medallas regaladas al terminar la carrera. También habrá brincolines, y actividades para niños al final de la carrera. Los adultos pueden esperar medalla de 5to aniversario al terminar la carrera. 8 Cool Races to run this spring and summer in the Quad Cities By Nicholas Cunnigham With the weather finally seeming to act it’s season lately and all the surprise winter storms gone for good, Quad Citizens can begin to break out their shorts and tank tops and prepare for upcoming 5k’s and other fun themed races coming up this spring and summer. Hola America Sports has you covered with a list of some of the biggest races in the Quad Cities from May to the end of August. Mark your calendars now and of course get on your mark, get set and go get yourself ready for your best running season ever.

#3 Next up in June is a race that on the morning of the #6 A few weeks later, one of the nation’s largest sum10th, you will know that it is happening by the sea of pink and white that runs by you in downtown Moline. The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure takes place in downtown Moline and serves as one of the biggest fundraisers for breast cancer research in the Quad Cities. On June 3rd, the Girl Scouts of America host their annual One Tough Cookie 3 mile mud run and obstacle course race at Camp Liberty in New Liberty, IA. Packed with challenging and fun obstacles that will test your strength and endurance all the proceeds go back to help all the Girl Scouts of America become responsible members of their community. Armando Castro rides El Toro Loco By Anastassia Zvoryguina Monster Jam is back in town! Get ready for loud engine revving, dirt flying from under big tires and huge monster trucks racing for the win. This year Monster Jam is set for the weekend of May 6 and 7 and Hola America got a chance to talk to Armando Castro the driver of El Toro Loco. Armando Castro is from Whittier, California and he is one of the youngest drivers in Monster Jam. This 20 year old young man fell in love with Monster Jam, after attending an event in Anaheim, CA at the tender age of 6. “I dreamed to be one,” Castro said about wanting to become a driver for Monster Jam since his first Monster Jam event. He never thought that the dream would come true one day. While dreaming of becoming a monster jam athlete, Castro followed his parents’ advice and finished school. After graduating from High School, Castro went on to get his EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certificate. “A lot of people don’t know that I am an EMT,” Armando Castro said. While working as EMT, he got a chance to reach for his dream. He ran into someone he knew and that meeting changed his fate. He threw the dice and auditioned. The judges must have seen something in him because even though he does not have any motocross experience he got the spot and the summer of last year he spent it at Monster Jam University in Paxton, Illinois. “First year and first time training. They taught us to drive there,” Castro told about his experience in Monster Jam University. After the summer of training, Castro was ready to drive the monster truck to victory. Although he started driving for Monster Jam this year he did already have some wins. The one he is most proud of was when during the first quarter he won a third place and ended up in the company of two drivers with experience. “One was a motocross driver and the other was a NASCAR driver,” Castro proudly shared. As he is starting off his carrier with Monster Jam, he is not planning on quit-

ting his EMT job. At the moment he is trying to do both. “My parents are happy and supportive. They are proud,” Armando Castro shared. “It is an honor and I am proud to represent the Hispanic community,” he added. He also advised to others not to stop dreaming, don’t get in trouble and finish school. “Don’t give up. I accomplished a lot in life and it is only the beginning. I have a whole life ahead. Never give up and stay out of trouble,” Armando Ochoa offered his advice. He also invites everyone in the community to come out for Monster Jam. “The event is fun and loud. It is different kind of event in a good way,” Castro described Monster Jam in his own words. “Nothing is written and nothing is planned. It is entertainment, but at the end it is a competition among 8 drivers.” Plan to attend Monster Jam on May 6 or 7 and come early for the Pit Party, where you can meet the drivers, ask them questions, take pictures with them and even walk the track where the main action takes place. Armando Castro might be one of the youngest drivers in Monster Jam. He might be only 20 years old, but he has a lot going on for him. He saves lives as an EMT during the
