El camino a casa: Residente de Arrowhead forma parte del Nike Running Camp antes de su graduación Por Nicholas Cunningham Cuando Armando fue enviado a Arrowhead, un centro de rehabilitación conductual juvenil en los Quad Cities, estar en un equipo de atletismo era lo último que tenía en mente. “Cuando llegué aquí por primera vez, realmente no sabía que quería correr o interesarme mucho por ello”, explicó Armando. “Pero cuando me lo mostraron, lo vi como una oportunidad para probar algo nuevo y me gustó.” Armando participó en su primera carrera 5K en enero en la Carrera de “The Resolution Run” en Moline y no tardó mucho en ver el potencial sin explorar que tenía, ya que unas pocas carreras más tarde comenzó a posicionarse en la categoría de su edad. “Comencé a ganar trofeos y medallas en las carreras y también me sorprendió

Entrenado por el cinco veces campeón de la NCAA y ex plusmarquista estadounidense Chris Solinsky junto con muchos otros entrenadores de alto nivel, Armando pudo concentrarse en correr junto con muchas otras actividades de estilo de vida. “Al principio, me sentí tímido, no quería hablar con los otros corredores, porque sabía que eran mejores que yo”, dijo Armando. “Me sentía angustiado porque sabía que iba a haber mucha gente mejor

que yo, pero lo iba a intentar y ver cómo me iba”. Y Armando también se sorprendió al ver que al cabo de unos días en el campamento, ya era capaz de mantenerse al día e incluso de hacerlo mejor que algunos de los otros corredores allí. Le sorprendió gratamente que algunos de los entrenadores también tuvieran algunas cosas en común con él. “El entrenador dijo que simplemente llegó, sin querer esforzarse en el equipo de atletismo y luego se volvió bueno”, dijo Armando. “Al principio no era muy bueno en este deporte, pero luego ayudaba a entrenar a sus compañeros de equipo a partir de los diecinueve años y luego continuó a partir de ahí con su carrera”. Arrowhead ha estado en las ciudades de Quad Cities ayudando a los jóvenes en situación de riesgo desde 1945. El equipo de atletismo se creó en 2012 para dar a los residentes algo que hacer cuando estaban enojados, estresados o necesitaban unos minutos para despejar su mente. Mi familia dijo que se sentía orgullosa de que mi, mis compañeros y el personal me felicitaron y me hicieron saber lo bueno que soy en esto; todo esto me ha enseñado a usar realmente tus recursos y a hacer algo bueno con ellos”.

Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos regresa a la Iglesia de Santa Maria en Sterling

Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos regresa a la Iglesia de Santa Maria en Sterling, IL desde el viernes 6 de septiembre al domingo 8 de Septiembre del 2019. Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos es considerada la segunda imagen más visitada por peregrinos en México (La Virgen de Guadalupe de Cerro de Tepeyac es la más visitada). Se cree que esta imagen pequeña es milagrosa. Desde 1632, ella fue conocida como alguien que ayuda en casos de peligro mortal. La imagen original de la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos se ubica en Jalisco, México. Aunque la imagen original fue hecha con pasta de Michoacán, que es una simple mezcla de hojas de elote y pegamento, después de años de existencia la imagen no se deterioró. La imagen es de la Virgen parada con sus manos juntas en oración. Ella trae un vestido azul con estrellas puesto y hay una medialuna en sus pies y dos angelitos sostienen un listón arriba de su cabeza con siguientes palabras escritas en ella: “Mater inmaculata ora pro nobis” (Madre Inmaculada, Reza por Nosotros). Este será el séptimo año que la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos viene a la Iglesia de Santa Maria ubicada en 509 Avenida B en Sterling, IL. A lo largo de los tres días de la presencia de la imagen en la iglesia habrá eventos, misas especiales y rezos. Siguiente es el horario de los eventos. Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is returning to St. Mary’s Church in Sterling, IL Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is returning to St. Mary’s Church in Sterling, IL from Friday September 6 - Sunday September 8, 2019. Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos is considered the second most visited image by pilgrims in Mexico (The first most visited is the Virgin of Guadalupe on Cerro de Tepeyac). It is believed that this small image is miraculous. Since 1632, she has been associated with helping with problems that involve mortal danger. The original image of Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos is in Jalisco, Mexico. Even though the original image has been made of paste from Michoacán, which is simple mix of corn husks and glue, the image has not deteriorated over many years of existence. This image is of the Virgin standing up with her hands joined in prayer. It has a blue gown with stars on it and moon crescent at the bottom of her feet

and two small angels above her hold a ribbon with written words “Mater inmaculata ora pro nobis” (Immaculate Mother, pray for us). This will be the seventh year that Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos comes to St. Mary’s Church located at 509 Avenue B in Sterling, IL. The Road Home: Arrowhead resident participates in Nike Running Camp before graduating program DJ Kane performing at VIVA QC

By Nicholas Cunningham When Armando was placed at Arrowhead, a juvenile behavioral rehabilitation center in the Quad Cities, being on a run team was the last thing on his mind. “When I first got here I really didn’t know I wanted to run or have a big interest in it,” explained Armando. “But when I got introduced to it I saw it as an opportunity to try something new and I actually liked it.” Armando participated in his first 5K in January at the Resolution Run in Moline and it didn’t take long to see the untapped potential in him as a few runs later he began to place in his age division. “I started winning trophies and medals

at races and I was very surprised and proud of myself too because I came a long way from not knowing what the sport was to actually being good at it and liking it.” So after careful planning with the Rock Island Probation Department and the support from Sedona Technologies in Moline, Armando was able to attend a four day Nike Running Camp in Amherst Junction, WI at the end of July. “When I found out that Armando had the opportunity to attend an elite running camp, I brought it to the attention of my supervisor and chief and there first response was ‘what could we do to help make this possible’? They knew how much he had achieved and how

much potential he had that we wanted to offer as much support as possible to help,” explained Rock Island Probation Officer, Kyle Carstens. “To see how far Armando has come while at residential is amazing. Not only have I seen him pick up a new hobby such as running but also he has grown as a person. He has set goals for himself for the future and has gained the skills to know what it takes to reach those goals. If he continues with the mindset and work ethic that he has now I see a very bright future.” Coached by five time NCAA champion and former American record holder Chris Solinsky along with many other top level coaches, Armando was able to

focus on running along with many other life-skill-styled activities. “At first, I felt shy, not really wanting to talk to the other runners, because I knew they were better than me,” said Armando. “I was feeling anxious because I knew there was going to be a lot of people that were better than me there but I was just going to give it a try and see how it went.” And Armando was also surprised to see that a few days into the camp, he was able to keep up and even do better than some of the other runners there. Continues from last page He was also pleasantly surprised that some of the coaches had a few things in common with him as well. “The coach said he came along way, not really wanting to put effort into the track team and then actually became good,” said Armando. “He was not really good at the sport at first but then helped coached his teammates starting at nineteen years old and then went on from there with his career.” Arrowhead has been around in the Quad Cities helping at-risk-youth since 1945. The run team was started in 2012 to give the residents something to do when they were angry, stressed or just needed a few minutes to themselves to clear their head. The Arrowhead Run Team is now a big part of the QC running community as they run in 20-25 events a year and help set up and/or tear down at all of them. “It’s a good way to

get you away from some of your problems,” explained Armando. “It’s a positive outlet that you can do whenever, at the gym, at home or at school.” And not only is the staff at Arrowhead proud of all the hard work that he has done in the program, Armando knows that he has the support of his family and community behind him and has already talked to his high school cross country coach and hopes to join the team this fall. “I want to get on a track team and the basketball team and put my time into it and do something with it,” explained Armando. “I always have that drive when I get interested in something that I actually like, I put a lot of time and effort into it. My family said they were proud of me and my peers and staff congratulating me and letting me know how good I was at this; all this has taught me to actually use your resources and do something good with them.”
