St. Mary’s Church in Sterling will celebrate its first annual Kermes By Anastassia Zvoryguina Fun, games, music, and delicious food. Sunday August 26 from 12 PM to 6 PM St. Mary’s Church in Sterling will have its first annual Kermes. This Kermes is being held to raise funds for the expenses of the traveling statue of Our Lady the Virgen de los Lagos that will come to St. Mary’s Church in Sterling in October 8 through 10. “Having Our Lady the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos at our parish is a honor,” Graciela Macias, organizer of this event, explained. Ms. Macias explained that many people who make requests such as asking for a sick family member to get bettger to Our Lady the Virgen of San

Juan de los Lagos and once the request is fulfilled, the person that made the promise must make a pilgrimage to the Virgen’s shrine. “Unfortunately, many people are not able to travel to see her in Mexico, so this is wonderful opportunity for those to come and visit her in our parish,” Ms. Macias said. “Organizing this event has been a challenge that I decided to take on because I personally owe a lot to the Virgen and my faith to her and the church is something I cherish very deeply.” Since to bring Our Lady the Virgen of San Juan de los Lagos to Sterling will cost money, the Kermes is a great way to raise funds while having fun. I started teaching Sinaloa last year knowing that one day I wanted him to be the Toro in Toro Mambo. About 6 months ago, we finally started to make plans and it was tonight that it became a reality for him. Special thanks to Art and Jessica Muños for constructing the bull for us. The night was full of memories and I’m glad we were able to create one for him and his family. Nothing is impossible! The first Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit in Illinois Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit (IES) is in the process of expanding to different locations across the country and on Friday July 27 they held their first summit in Illinois at the TaxSlayer Center on Moline. The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit has been very active in Iowa. Many entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs attended and took advantage of the annual event in the past 11 years as well as many mini summits across Iowa. Lt. Governor for IL Evenlyn Sanguinetti was the keynote speaker at the IES and she shared her experience on being the daughter of immigrants and the entrepreneurial spirit immigrants have. Hola America was honored to be recognized by the IES with the Outstanding Immigrant Business Award. Other recipients of awards that day were Carmen Fuentes of Moline, Robert Lilly of Silvis and Mr Bob Ontiveros was presented with the Immigrant Champion Award an award given to a non-immigrant who is dedicated to making a positive impact on the immigrant community.

The Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit was founded in 2008 by Ying Sa, Principal Certified Public Accountant from Community CPA & Associates. According to their website the purpose of this organization is â&#x20AC;&#x153;to bring businesses of diverse backgrounds together to share, learn and cele-

Daughter’s Dream for Dads Comes True on Sylvan Island By Nicholas Cunningham Over twenty years ago, Jesse, Don and Buck Perez, best known to the West End of Moline as part of the Sylvan Island Dreamers, took the task of spearheading a renewal project to improve and keep Sylvan Island open and family friendly. It was a place the three knew all too well from their childhood days and Jesse recalled fond memories of the river. “When I was growing up,” said Perez. “Right when June hit and school was out, we’d go down there and swim.” This past May, the daughters of the Dreamers, Jesse’s daughter Franki Cunningham, Don’s daughter Benita DeLoach and Buck’s daughter Gloria Perez-Loy, along with the support of their families wanted to do something for their father’s to commemorate their hard work on the Island and to preserve their early brotherly bonding phase of life. “My cousin Dodi’s Dad (Buck) had passed the previous year and we were having a conversation about how loved ones are here one day and gone the next,” said Franki. “She wanted to memorialize her Dad someway and because he loved his brothers so much, a

bench on Sylvan Island was the perfect location.” Each of the daughters have fond memories of their dads on Sylvan Island, whether it was when they were young or later in their years when they saw their fathers put in countless hours on the Island, cleaning, building fishing piers and pretty much doing anything and everything you could think of to make it look great. Even Jesse recalled his little sister Rosemary running to their dad on the bridge. But if you ask Benita, the word fond might not be the first word she would pick to use when reminiscing about the Island. “Personally, I was terrified of the bridge,” said Benita. “J (Benita’s brother) remembers catching his first fish there and I think the best thing was it was important to my Dad and how cool it was for him to share it with us. It was one nice way to bond with him.” Well, that bridge was given a complete makeover in May and could not be more inviting now. And as Jesse and Don both share a birthday on Aug 6th, they also share the sentiment that their brother Buck can rest easy knowing that they, along with all those that visit the Island can enjoy the bench dedicat-

Con una foto de su hermano en la mano y de su otro hermano Don al lado, la banca recibió una bendición oficial de parte del diácono Joseph Dockery de la iglesia de San Pío X en Rock Island a principios de verano, pero fue la bendición de Jesse junto con la de Don que hizo que su vida en Sylvan Island fuera más significativa y ahora no será olvidada. “El parque se ve muy bien ahora”, dijo Jesse. “Los Soñadores se hicieron cargo y realmente lo arreglaron. Solo queríamos que se viera agradable”.

Marvel Universe LIVE! Comes to Moline By Anastassia Zvoryguina Spider-Man and Iron Man are great superheroes, but when Capitan America, Thor, Black Panther, Hulk, Black Widow, Wasp and Iron Fist join them then everyone on the planet can feel safe. And once everyone’s favorite super heroes unite with Guardians of the Galaxy then the universe is in good hands. A great show is coming to Quad Cities, filled with superheroes, battles, stunts and of course a great story line that will satisfy even the pickiest superhero fan out there. Marvel Universe LIVE! There will be more than 25 of everyone’s most favorite Marvel heroes and villains. “It is appealing to many families, teens kids and parents,” Mr. Christensen told us about Marvel Universe LIVE! Age of Heroes. “[There will be] motorcycles, explosions and action packed fights.” The show promises many special effects, aerial maneuvers, pyrotechnics, martial

arts, great motorcycle stunts and 3D video projection mapping. “It is like going to a movie and watch the Marvel movie [unfold] right in front of [the audience],” Mr. Christensen described this amazing show. He also invited everyone “to take advantage” of the show and go see this heart pumping, stunt filled performance. “If you saw other Marvel Show Live, this is different,” Mr. Jay Christensen explained to the fans of Marvel Universe. “If you enjoyed it the first time, the second time is even better.
