Una Segunda Oportunidad Por Victor Oyervides Los eventos recientes han estado hurgando memorias dentro de mí: disturbios en la calle, balaceo de policías, la quema de banderas, ataques a los manifestantes, comunidades en llamas, ataques a los policías, y mucho más. Parece como que hemos regresado a los años 60 del siglo pasado. Considere la siguiente frase de Thurston Clarke, “En 1968, Estados unidos era una nación herida. Las heridas fueron heridas morales, y la guerra con Vietnam y tres veranos de disturbios violentos en las ciudades causaron estas heridas en el alma de la nación, desafiando las creencias de los estadounidenses de que ellos eran gente únicamente noble y honorable.” ¿Cree usted que esto describe nuestra nación en este momento preciso? ¿Qué significa todo esto? ¿Dentro de usted, que le dice su corazón, el miedo, confusión, desesperación, enojo, falta de esperanza, abandono, los olvidados o los que se quedaron atrás? Es tan fácil de perder el camino en este mundo tan caótico. Vamos a parar y reflexionar. Llegó el momento de arreglar lo que mi generación hizo mal. Dios nos está dando una segunda oportunidad. Después de la década de los años 60 nosotros cubrimos las heridas de nuestra nación por medio de creación de décadas de indulgencia y autosatisfacción. Desafortunadamente, para que una herida no tratada se sane de verdad, esta tiene que ser abierta y expuesta. La infección con pus debe de ser drenada. Solamente entonces nuestra nación puede sanarse. Esto nos trae al presente estado de la nación. Hay un propósito para todo lo que está pasando.

No vamos a perder el único ingrediente necesario, la ESPERANZA. Durante esta década tumultuosa hubo un profeta en nuestra nación quien anticipó, por medio de la gracia de Dios, el futuro de la ESPERANZA para muestra nación. Martin Luther King valientemente declaró en su último discurso, “Igual a cualquier otra persona, yo quiero vivir una vida larga. Longevidad tiene su lugar. Pero no es esto lo que me preocupa ahora. Simplemente quiero hacer la voluntad de Dios. Y Él me permitió subir la montaña. Y yo miré por todas partes. Y yo miré la Tierra Prometida. Tal vez no llegaré allí con ustedes. ¡Pero esta noche quiero que sepan que nosotros, juntos llegaremos a la Tierra Prometida!” Sí, él visualizó la Tierra Prometida. Usted puede argumentar que él hablaba solo de los africanos americanos. Yo me atrevo a desacordar con usted porque el Presidente John F. Kennedy dirigió a la nación declarando: “Ellos (los africanos americanos) no están libres de las cadenas de injusticia. Todavía no están

libres de la depresión social y económica. Y esta nación, con todas sus esperanzas y jactancias, no va a ser de verdad libre hasta que todos los ciudadanos sean libres.” Entonces ¿cómo una nación dividida puede sanarse? ¿Cómo una nación enojada puede amar? Dios habló hace mucho tiempo por medio del profeta Micah. “Pero él ya aclaró como se debe de vivir, que se debe de hacer, que es lo que Dios busca en los hombres y mujeres. Es algo simple: Haz lo que es justo a tu prójimo (haz lo correcto), seas compasivo y leal en tu amor (amar la misericordia), y no te tomes muy en serio – toma en serio a Dios (caminar humildemente con Dios).” Terminando el año 2016 y mirando hacia el 2017 y más allá, es hora de despertarnos como una nación. Vamos a despertar y crear nuestra conciencia con la previa resolución. Déjame caminar y hacer lo que es justo. Déjame amar la misericordia. Y déjame caminar humildemente con Dios. Les deseo una Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo.

This will be a unique opportunity to learn about classical applications of Latino music as well as various aspects of performances techniques, practice & heritage.

Recent events have been stirring up memories inside of me: rioting in the streets, police shootings, burning of flags, hosing down of protesters, communities on fire, attacks on law enforcement, and much more. It seems like we are in the 1960’s all over again, consider this quote by Thurston Clarke. “In 1968, America was a wounded nation. The wounds were moral ones, and the Vietnam War and three summers of inner- city riots had inflicted them on the national soul, challenging Americans’ belief that they were a uniquely noble and honorable people.” Do you feel that this describes our nation at this precise moment in time? What are we to make of all of this? Deep down inside, what is your heart telling you, fear, confusion, despair, anger, hopelessness, abandonment, forgotten, or left behind? It is so easy to lose one’s way in such a chaotic world. Let’s stop and reflect. It is time to right what my generation did wrong. God is giving us a second chance. After the decade of the 60’s, we just covered up our nation’s wounds by creating decades of self-gratification. Unfortunately, for an untreated wound to truly heal, it must be opened up and exposed. The infection with pus must be drained. Only then can our land be healed. Which brings us to our present state of the nation. There is a purpose with everything that is happening. Let’s not lose the one ingredient necessary, HOPE. There was a prophet in our nation during that tumultuous decade, who foresaw by God’s grace a future of HOPE for our nation. Martin Luther King bravely de-

clared in his last speech: “Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land! Yes, he had envisioned a Promised Land. You might argue that he was speaking only to African Americans. I dare to disagree for President John F. Kennedy addressed the nation stating, “They (African Americans) are not yet freed from the bonds of injustice. They are not yet freed from social and economic depression. And this nation, for all its hopes and all its boasts, will not be fully free until all its citizens are free.” How then can a divided nation heal? How can an angry nation love? God spoke ages ago through

the prophet Micah. “But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do, what God is looking for in men and women. It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor (do what is right), be compassionate and loyal in your love (to love mercy), and don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously (to walk humbly with God)”. The Message and God’s Word versions Wrapping up 2016, and looking toward to 2017 and beyond, it is a time to awaken as a nation! Let us awaken and nurture our conscience with the above resolution. Let me walk and do what is right. Let me love mercy. And let me walk humbly with God. Best wishes in this Christmas season, and a Happy New Year!

Policías y niños de compras de Navidad El pasado lunes 12 de diciembre os oficiales del departamento de policía de Moline acompañaron a 70 niños de distrito escolar de Moline-Coal Valley al evento “Policías y niños de compras de Navidad”. Cada estudiante recibió alrededor de $75 para comprar regalos

de Navidad para los miembros de su familia y un regalo para ellos mismos. Después de las compras los oficiales llevaron a los niños para una fiesta de pizza. A principios de ese día, el oficial Eli Soliz y la detective Marcy O’Brien recibieron un cheque de $ 750 de parte del Moline Rotary

Kids and Cops Holiday Shopping On the evening of Monday December 12 Moline officers took 70 kids from MolineCoal Valley School District Kids and Cops Holiday Shopping event. Each student got around $75 to purchase Christmas gifts for family members and a gift for themselves. After shopping they took the kids for a pizza party. Earlier that day officer Eli Soliz and Detective Marcy O’Brien were presented with a check for $750 from the Moline Rotary to help out with this program. Saint Ambrose University is host to the first LULAC Collegiate Council in Iowa By Dawn Neuses DAVENPORT, Iowa — A diverse group of students have created a community at St. Ambrose University, a place where they can excel and share their culture as members of the first LULAC Collegiate Council in Iowa. The SAU council was chartered in April 2015 with a mission to further equality and social justice and to promote voter education, registration and rights. It is one of just 23 college councils in the United States. LULAC, or League for United Latin American Citizens, is the nation’s largest and oldest civil rights organization. Its volunteer members work to empower Hispanic Americans and build strong Latino communities through programs, services and advocacy. St. Ambrose LULAC staff adviser Andrea Rivera said the student members are from various cultures and backgrounds, and they willingly learn and encourage one another. She added they have become very close friends, if not family, who listen and value each other no matter their heritage, race or religion. Victor Garibay, a sophomore from Chicago who transferred to the university this fall, described the council as a safe space where everyone is able to contribute what their culture offers. His childhood friend, SAU sophomore Norma Palomino, encouraged him to join LULAC. “It has been a great support system for me,” Palomino said. St. Ambrose is a Catholic university committed to academic excellence, social justice and service. Located in Davenport, Iowa, it welcomes a diverse student body and, with an 11 to 1 student-faculty ratio, provides a learning environment where all of its students can find the individual attention they might need to succeed personally and professionally. Ryan Saddler, the university’s Director of Diversity, said St. Ambrose strives to promote to serve students of all ethnicities and said the university has become increasingly intent on educating all students about the value of difference. “The ultimate goal is for our students to be aware of issues throughout the commu-

nity related to racial and ethnic injustice, and to become aware of the mechanisms and actions that will ensure a more just society,” Saddler said. “As an institution, we are excited about having a LULAC chapter on campus and excited about what it can mean for the St. Ambrose community. We have the potential to learn from one another, to become aware of injustices in society, aware of how we can address and call those on the carpet now and in the communities where our students will land,” he said. Clarice Roa moved to the U.S. from the Philippines six years ago. She is from the small city of Mundelein, Ill., and will graduate in May 2017 with a degree in forensic psychology. She joined the LULAC council last year and said while the members do not share the same culture, they do have shared experiences, such as being a woman of color in the U.S., and aspects of language, tradition and family values. Most importantly, the members share their pride. “In America, when you are

from a different culture, you are proud of it,” Roa said. Last month, the SAU council hosted a Dia de Los Muertos event for the campus community. A steady stream of students attended to learn about the celebration and enjoy food, games and music. Before the event concluded, SAU LULAC Collegiate Council president Vicente Solis offered a prayer for those who have passed. The crowd of students filling the room joined him in prayer and tears, Palomino said. It was an overwhelming statement of respect and partnership, she said. Added Garibay, “I enjoy the community we have created here. We gain and grow in empowerment through each other,” he said. Solis said the members will continue to host events for the university community as well as extend the council’s reach beyond campus. Plans are underway to make and donate blankets to area shelters as well as meet with area Latino high school students to talk to them about college and offer personal tours of campus. “Our mem-

bers are open and willing to do all of these things,” he said. Saddler said students involved in LULAC have a tremendous opportunity. The SAU Collegiate Council was formed at the urging of Davenport LULAC Council 10 and has the support of its 100-plus members. In addition, the collegiate council has access to the state and national LULAC organizations, which connects the university students with additional support and expertise, he said. Palomino said she is the first person in her immediate family to graduate high school, and the first to attend college. She said she knew she wanted to attend St. Ambrose from the first time she visited campus. “Everyone is welcoming,” she said. Garibay also the first in his immediate family to attend college, said he believes there is a place for everyone. He found his at St. Ambrose. “Get your education,” Garibay said. “Education is key. Knowledge is power.”

La Universidad de St. Ambrose es la sede del primer concilio Colegial de LULAC en Iowa Por Dawn Neuses Un grupo diverso de estudiantes han creado una comunidad dentro de la Universidad de St. Ambrose (SAU por sus siglas en inglés), un lugar donde ellos pueden salir adelante y compartir sus culturas como miembros en el primero Concilio Universitario de LULAC en Iowa. El concilio de SAU fue certificado en abril del 2015 con la misión de promover la justicia social y la educación, registración y derechos de votantes. Es uno de los solo 23 de los concilios universitarios en los Estados Unidos. LULAC, la liga de los Ciudadanos Latino Americanos Unidos, es la organización de derechos civiles más grande de la nación. Sus miembros voluntarios trabajan para dar influencia a los hispanos americanos y construir comunidades latinas fuertes por medio de sus programas, servicios y abogacía. Andrea Rivera, la consejera de St. Ambrose para LULAC, dijo que los miembros estudiantes vienen de diferentes culturas y lugares de origen y ellos voluntariamente aprenden a apoyarse entre ellos. Ella agregó que ellos se han hecho buenos amigos, casi como miembros de una familia, ellos se escuchan y se valoran sin importar su origen, raza o religión. Clarice Roa se mudó a los Estados Unidos de Filipinas hace seis años. Ella es de un pueblo pequeño de Mundelein, Ill., y se graduará en mayo del 2017 con licenciatura en psicología forense. Ella se unió a LULAC el año pasado y dijo que aunque los miembros no comparten la misma cultura, ellos comparten las experiencias, por ejemplo el ser mujer de color en los Estados Unidos, y aspectos del idioma, tradición y valores familiares. Lo más importante los miembros comparten su orgullo en sus culturas.

“En los Estados Unidos cuando vienes de diferente cultura eso te hace sentir orgullo,” Roa dijo. El mes pasado el concilio de SAU tuvo el evento de Día de los Muertos para la comunidad del campus. Muchos estudiantes asistieron el evento para aprender sobre la celebración y disfrutar de la comida y música. Antes del acabar el evento, el presidente del concilio universitario de LULAC, Vicente Solis, ofreció una oración por los fallecidos. Los estudiantes que llenaron el cuarto se unieron a la oración con lágrimas, dijo Palomino. Fue una demostración fuerte de respeto y solidaridad, ella dijo. Garibay agregó, “Disfruto de la comunidad que hemos creado aquí. Estamos creciendo y aprendiendo unos de otros,” él dijo. Solis dijo que los miembros seguirán ofreciendo eventos para la comunidad universitaria también el alcance del concilio va más allá de la universidad. Hay planes de hacer y donar cobijas para los refugios del área, también tener una junta con estudiantes latinos de preparatorias para hablarles sobre el colegio y ofrecer excursiones person-

ales por el campus. “Nuestros miembros están abiertos y dispuestos para hacer todas estas cosas,” él dijo. Saddler dijo que los estudiantes que participan en LULAC tienen una oportunidad tremenda. El Concilio Universitario de LULAC fue formado gracias a LULAC Concilio #10 y tiene apoyo de sus más de 100 miembros. El concilio universitario tiene acceso a las organizaciones de LULAC estatales y nacionales que conectan los estudiantes universitarios con apoyo y expertos adicionales, él dijo. Palominos dijo ella es la primera de su familia en graduarse de la preparatoria y la primera en asistir a una universidad. Ella dijo que ella sabía que quería asistir a la Universidad de St. Ambrose después de visitar la escuela por primera vez. “Todos te dan la bienvenida,” ella dijo. El Sr. Brooks tiene una gran experiencia y él busca enfrentar las necesidades y hacer realidad la visión hacia el futuro para la Ciudad de Rock Island. Terry Brooks nació en Danville, IL, pero él creció en Rock Island y él conoce bien la ciudad y sus necesidades. El Sr. Brooks asistió a la Preparatoria de Rock Island y a la Universidad de Illinois. El Sr. Brooks es un padre de 6, él también es abuelo de 14 nietos y él esta completamente dedicado a ayudar a la Ciudad de Rock Island a alcanzar un futuro mejor. Actualmente, el Sr. Brooks es un consultante para un negocio pequeño ubicado en Washington D.C. “Decidí postularme para alcalde de la ciudad de Rock Island porque tengo experiencia de 16 años como concejal de la ciudad. Además de tener la experiencia necesaria para la posición de alcalde de Rock Island, él también está involucrado en la comunidad y siempre busca las maneras para mover Rock Island hacia un futuro mejor para cada residente de la ciudad. “Siempre tuve el interés común en la comunidad. Soy una persona que se enfoca en las soluciones en lo que se trata de los asuntos y preocupaciones de la gente y mi meta es construir una ciudad mejor para todos los ciudadanos,” él agregó. La visión del Sr. Brooks para Rock Island es asegurar el crecimiento económico por medio de evaluación e invitación a los líderes de negocios para que se involucren más en el ambiente de negocios de Rock Island. Y en lo que se trata de desarrollo de la comunidad, el Sr. Brooks quiere ofrecer oportunidades para inversiones grandes para que la ciudad pueda tener desarrollos que tanto necesita. Él quiere emprender el projecto de Jumer crossing, desarrollo de viviendas y tratar de hacer algo con 11th Street y Black Hawk Plaza. Terry Brooks visualiza un centro para diferentes deportes que seguramente será buena adición para la comunidad y economía de la Ciudad de

Rock Island. El Sr. Brooks cree que el ambiente de trabajo debe de ser limpio y verde y debe de incorporar iniciativas de energías verdes tales como solar, de viento y otras. Él sabe bien que la comunidad necesita atraer y encontrar las maneras de retener los profesionales jóvenes. Él entiende que la diversidad hace que las comunidades sean más fuertes y él quiere ver que más jóvenes participen en diferentes consejos, comisiones y cuerpos especiales. Jóvenes deben de participar y Sr. Brooks asegura que es importante ayudarles a ser líderes que llevaran a los

demás al futuro. “Si me eligen para alcalde, yo luchare por nuestra comunidad, la seguridad de los jóvenes, beneficios públicos y un espíritu emprendedor, para que podamos invertir en nuestro futuro. ¡Por favor, venga conmigo y juntos vamos a mover Rock Island hacia adelante!” el Sr. Brooks dijo. Conozca a los candidatos locales: Mike González para el Senado del Estado de Iowa del Distrito 45 Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Debido a la muerte prematura de Joe Seng (D), la elección especial para la posición en el Senado del Estado de Iowa del Distrito 45 fue convocada. La elección especial será el 27 de diciembre del 2016. Aquí le presentamos a Mike González, uno de los candidatos que está buscando tomar el lugar de Seng. Si es elegido, Mike González será el primer hispano en servir en la Legislatura de Iowa. Mike González se mudó a Davenport de Chicago a la edad de 13 años cuando su padre fue contratado para trabajar en la fábrica de Oscar Meyer. El Sr. González asistió a la escuela Davenport West y Academia de Cuerpos Policiales de Iowa. El Sr. González fue miembro de Reservas de Sheriff del Condado de Scott y en noviembre de 1999 él se hizo oficial de policía de tiempo completo del Departamento de Policía de LeClaire. Actualmente, este padre de tres hijos felizmente casado, es el Sargento de Patrulla de Operaciones o, en otras palabras, él maneja la división de patrullas. “Durante mi carrera hice de todo un poco, empezando de investigaciones, trafico, procesamiento de evidencia, propiedad y evidencia. Asistí a numerosas sesiones de entrenamiento especializadas desde Asiento de coche para niños, negociación durante el crisis, y la Red de Inteligencia de Iowa,” Mike González compartió. Desde hace tiempo el Sr. González tuvo la idea de tratar de involucrarse en la política y hasta tuvo planes de hacerlo después de retirarse del departamento de policía, pero la oportunidad llegó antes del retiro y él decidió tomarla. “Cuando yo era un niño vi que mis padres siempre estaban involucrados en la política por eso siempre tuve el deseo de servir a la comunidad,” el Sr. González explicó. Una de las razones que lo impulsó a postularse para el Senado del Estado de Iowa fue el hecho de que él notó que el distrito escolar estaba enfrentando problemas con fondos. “Quiero trabajar en Des Moines para ayudar a nuestros ni-

ños a obtener la educación y los fondos para educación que ellos merecen,” el Sr. González dijo. Si lo elijen a tomar este asiento en el gobierno, Mike González quiere tratar de cambiar el código de impuestos, para que los residentes de Iowa paguen menos impuestos. Meet the candidate: Terry Brooks for Mayor of Rock Island By Anastassia Zvoryguina April 4, 2017 is a day when residents of City of Rock Island will go to the polls to choose new mayor for their city. Let us present you one of the candidates for this position, Terry Brooks. Mr. Brooks has vast experience and he is looking to address the needs and vision of the future for the City of Rock Island. Terry Brook was born in Danville, IL, but he was raised in Rock Island and he knows this city well and understands the needs it has. Mr. Brooks attended Rock Island High School and the University of Illinois. Mr. Brooks is a single father of 6 and grandfather of 14 and he is fully invested in helping the City of Rock Island step into a better future. Currently, Mr. Brooks is a consultant to a small business that is located in Washington D.C. “I decided to run for Mayor of the City of Rock Island because of my 16 years of experience as an Alderman for the City. I have a vision in moving the City of Rock Island forward and I believe I am the most capable for the job,” Mr. Brooks explained. Since Mr. Brooks served on some boards and commissions that were looking to improve Rock Island, he feels he is the candidate who knows what the city needs. Mr. Brooks, who also is a member of Rock Island County NAACP, has served on the Rock Island Housing Authority for 13 years. He is and has served on the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Board of Directors for the past 20 years. Mr. Brooks, while serving as alderman for the city of Rock Island, also was the one who came up with the Respect is Knowing Campaign (Violence Isn’t the Answer) in 2008. This campaign, that uses colorful billboards all over the city, is set to raise awareness and get people to discuss ways to better deal with the problem of violence. Not only does Mr. Brooks reflects the necessary experience for the mayor position, but he also is very involved in his community and he points out he is always looking for ways to move Rock Island towards a better future for every resident of this city. “I’ve always had a common interest in community. I am solution focused about people’s issues and concerns with a goal

to build a better city for all citizens,” he added. Mr. Brooks vision of Rock Island is to ensure economic growth through assessing and inviting business leaders to be stakeholders in Rock Island environment, Mr. Brooks looks to promote investment and recruiting the local business leaders of tomorrow. Terry Brooks thinks in investing in the future while appreciating the benefits today and that is why he plans to focus on Western Illinois University, St. Ambrose University, Black Hawk College, the Rock Island Growth Corporation, QC Realtors Association and the Housing Authority that are economic drivers in the area. And when it comes to development of the community, Mr. Brooks says would like to offer opportunities for major investments so the city can have developments it badly needs. He would like to tackle Jumer’s crossing project, housing developments and try to provide an anchor at 11th Street and Black Hawk Plaza. Terry Brooks envisions a multi-sport center that he is sure will be a great addition to the community and economy of the City of Rock Island. Mr. Brooks is also a believer of the clean and green working environments that can incorporate solar, wind and other green energy initiatives. He strongly believes that the community needs to attract and find the ways to retain more young professionals. He knows and understands that diversity strengthens communities and he wants to see more young people getting appointed to boards, commissions and task forces. “Young people need to participate” he says and Mr. Brooks understands that it is important to help them to lead others towards a better tomorrow. “As mayor, I will fight for our community, youth safety, public goods, and entrepreneurship, so we can invest in our future. Meet the candidate: Mike Gonzalez for Iowa State Senate District 45 By Anastassia Zvoryguina Due to untimely death of Joe Seng (D) a special election has been called to fill in the Iowa State Senate District 45 seat. The special election will take place on December 27, 2016. Let us introduce to you Mike Gonzalez, one of the candidates running to fill the vacant seat. If elected, Mike Gonzalez would be the first Hispanic ever to serve in the Iowa Legislature. Mike Gonzalez moved to Davenport from Chicago at the age of 13 years old when his father got a job at the Oscar Mayer plant. Mr. Gonzalez attended Davenport West and the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy. Mr. Gonzalez was a member of the Scott County Sheriff Reserves and in November of 1999 he became a full time officer with the LeClaire Police Department. Currently, this happily married father of three is the Sergeant of Patrol Operations or in other words he manages the patrol division. “During my career I have done everything from investigations, traffic, evidence processing, property and evidence. I have attended numerous specialized training sessions from car seat, crisis negotiations and the Iowa Intelligence Network,” Mike Gonzalez shared. Even though Mr. Gonzalez always played with the idea of getting involved in politics and had plans to do so after retiring from the police department, the opportunity knocked on his door before he retired from the force and he decided to take it. “My parents were always involved in politics while I was growing up so there was always a desire to serve the community,” Mr. Gonzalez explained. One of the reasons that made him want to run for the seat in the Iowa State Senate was when he noticed the funding issues that the school district was facing. “I want to work in Des Moines to help our kids get the education and education funding they deserve,” Mr. Gonzalez said.

If chosen to fill the vacant seat in the government Mike Gonzalez would like to try to remake the tax code, so residents of Iowa would pay less taxes.
