Enough is Enough By Brandy Donaldson In all the recent organized efforts to present the QC as a welcoming and inclusive community, I think a great point has been missed or ignored. You cannot look to us marginalized people and communities to lead these efforts. We get the point and are doing what we have to do to uplift and advance ourselves. Start beating this welcoming and inclusive drum to the majority and make the majority act and change. Demand better from the white community, the heterosexual community, the non-immigrant community. It’s the majority that’s ruining our reputation for the QC. Make efforts to address institutional and systematic racism, xenophobia and bigotry. Stop just talking about bias. There is pure hate in our community. Y’all don’t seem to get it! And these organizations sit silent when that hate even presents itself in very public ways. But y’all wanna jump on board anytime marginalized communities do anything to uplift themselves. Y’all wanna be all up in the articles and pictures then. But where are y’all at when it’s time to blast these racists who are ruining our communities? And that includes current elected officials and candidates too. Where y’all at? I know some of y’all are right there supporting the hate. But what about the rest? I’m so tired of the bullsh!t and phony efforts. I’ve seen enough! A church in Bettendorf just pretty much held a KKK rally. No elected official, business leader or high ranking community figure from Bettendorf or Scott

County has anything to say about that? I would be calling a press conference in my city and blasting these people, calling it out for what it is and leading an investigation to get IRS sanctions or anything possible against that church. That’s how you prove you’re a welcoming and inclusive community! But nope, crickets. That is so telling of the community we live in! Yes, I am furious. Yes, I am demanding action from the so-called organizations and elected officials that we constantly see in the news harping about the Quad Cities being welcoming and inclusive. I apply the wisdom of James Baldwin to my community, my chosen home, the
community I love more than any other community in the world. “I love America more than any other country in the world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually,” he said. When will we get real and start ruffling the feathers of the racists and bigots who are poisoning our beloved communities? Yes, I’m talking to you, elected, highranking community officials and organizations. These people look a lot like you!

Ya basta Por Brandy Donaldson En todas las actividades organizadas recientemente para presentar en los Quad Cities como una comunidad hospitalaria e inclusiva, me parece que se ha pasado por alto o se ha hecho caso omiso de un gran punto. No se nos puede pedir a las personas y comunidades marginadas que dirijamos estos esfuerzos. Entendemos el punto y estamos haciendo lo que tenemos que hacer para edificarnos y avanzar. Empieza a hacer sonar este tambor acogedor e inclusivo a la mayoría y haz que la mayoría actúe y cambie. Exige más de la comunidad blanca, de la comunidad heterosexual, de la comunidad no inmigrante. Es la mayoría la que está arruinando nuestra reputación de QC. Haz todo lo posible por combatir el racismo, la xenofobia y la intolerancia institucionales y sistemáticos. Deja de hablar de prejuicios. Existe mucho odio en nuestra comunidad. ¡Parece que no lo entienden! Y estas organizaciones se guardan silencio cuando ese odio incluso se presenta de manera muy pública. Pero todos quieren sumarse cada vez que las comunidades marginadas hacen algo para mejorar. Quieren aparecer en los artículos y las fotos. Pero, ¿dónde están cuándo es el momento de condenar a estos racistas que están arruinando nuestras comunidades? Y esto incluye también a los actuales funcionarios electos y a los candidatos. ¿Dónde están todos? Sé que algunos de ustedes están ahí apoyando el odio. ¿Pero qué pasa con el resto? Estoy tan cansado de las mentiras y de los esfuerzos falsos. ¡Ya he visto suficiente!

Una iglesia en Bettendorf prácticamente acaba de celebrar un mitin del KKK. ¿Ningún funcionario electo, líder de negocios o figura de alto rango de la comunidad de Bettendorf o del condado de Scott tiene algo que decir al respecto? Ernesto Estigarribia, nuevo director de la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Quad City Por Anastassia Zvoryguina La música traspasa las fronteras. Une a las personas, no importa cuán diferentes sean. La gente no necesita hablar el mismo idioma para que les guste la misma música. Para que la gente disfrute de la música, los músicos han de tocar e interpretar los instrumentos y las grandes orquestas han de tener directores que guíen y dirijan a los músicos para que puedan tocar de la mejor manera posible. El año pasado la Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) contrató a un nuevo director para la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil y la Orquesta Filarmónica Juvenil, Ernesto Estigarribia. Estigarribia es el mejor ejemplo de que la música traspasa fronteras. Originario de Asunción, Paraguay, desde que tiene memoria, este artista se ha dedicado apasionadamente a la música. “Comencé mis estudios musicales en el Conservatorio Nacional de Música de Paraguay. Desde el principio sentí un fuerte sentido de compromiso y devoción por estudiar la música con seriedad”, compartió Ernesto Estigarribia sobre la importancia de la música en su vida. “Solía practicar muchas horas al día, a veces 8 horas al día cuando tenía tiempo. Esto me parecía normal, que en el momento de elegir una carrera la respuesta fuera obvia”. Evidentemente, una persona que estudia música con tanta pasión, que puede sonar hasta obsesiva, no podría hacer otra cosa que convertirse en músico profesional. Durante años Estigarribia fue violinista profesional de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de su Paraguay natal. Aunque es un gran violinista, deseaba ir más lejos y convertirse en director de orquesta. “Desde que vi una orquesta cuando era niño, me fascinó el liderazgo de los directores. Como instrumentista me sentí que no podía dirigir aunque me
interesaba mucho. Me han dicho que siempre he demostrado habilidades de liderazgo natural desde el principio, y mi forma de hacer música no es diferente. Para ser director de orquesta hay que tener experiencia. En mi caso fui violinista profesional en Paraguay”, dijo sobre su paso de violinista profesional a director de orquesta. “Después de adquirir una gran experiencia como músico profesional y tocar muchísima música de cámara, sentí que ya estaba listo para comenzar el aprendizaje serio de la dirección.” Su profesionalismo en la música, su amplia experiencia como violinista, su natural capacidad de liderazgo y, por supuesto, su gran amor por la música lo llevaron a otro país. En 2010 Ernesto Estigarribia llegó a los Estados Unidos y antes de conseguir un puesto en la QCSO, consiguió un trabajo como Director Artístico de la Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestra en Rochester, MN. Al mismo tiempo, estaba en el proceso de obtener su doctorado en música de la Universidad de Minnesota. En 2018 la QCSO contrató a este joven prometedor como director musical del QCSYE (Quad Cities Youth Symphony Ensemble) y director asistente de la QCSO. Ahora que el director Estigarribia se ha establecido en QCSO, tiene muchas ganas de compartir su experiencia con jóvenes músicos. Mencionó que como Director Musical de QCSYE le gustaría introducir a los jóvenes músicos a algunos de los compositores latinoamericanos de los que muchos no habían oído hablar antes. La mayoría de la gente está muy familiarizada con compositores como Bach y Tchaikovsky, pero no muchos saben quiénes son Clarice Assad y Arturo Márquez. Compartir estos y muchos otros compositores latinoamericanos con jóvenes músicos es una especie de misión para el director Estigarribia. Pero este no es
su único objetivo en este nuevo cargo. “Mis planes inmediatos son aprovechar el ya excelente programa de Grupo Juvenil que tenemos en los Quad Cities y desarrollar el acceso a más músicos jóvenes de nuestra diversa comunidad”, compartió Estigarribia sus planes para el futuro de QCSYO. Añadió que el QCSYE es un gran programa, “que ofrece a los jóvenes músicos la oportunidad de tocar a un nivel superior. Nuestras orquestas y coros tienen numerosas actuaciones a lo largo de la temporada. A través del arte de la orquesta, los jóvenes músicos mejoran su musicalidad y también desarrollan habilidades para la vida que les permitirán ser miembros funcionales de la sociedad”. Además de su trabajo como Director Musical de dos orquestas de nivel avanzado para jóvenes en el Programa de Orquestas Sinfónicas de Quad Cities, también comentó que continuará con su participación como director invitado en Sudamérica. El año pasado fue invitado como director visitante en Paraguay y Argentina. A su corta edad, Ernesto Estigarribia llegó muy lejos como músico profesional y ahora como director de orquesta. Estudió música porque le encantaba estudiar música, en el camino aprendió la importancia de ir más allá de la técnica y aprendió que el músico y director de orquesta tiene que ser muy sensible a las emociones humanas. Aprendió que la música tiene que conmover los corazones de la gente. Todo lo que aprendió es porque cree que las oportunidades están ahí para ser aprovechadas y sólo aquellos que dan lo mejor de sí mismos llegarán a las estrellas. “Mi consejo es que aprovechen las muchas oportunidades que existen. Si la oportunidad está un poco fuera de tu alcance mueve cielo y tierra para que esto suceda”, Ernesto Estigarribia
aconsejó a todos los jóvenes músicos que se encuentran por ahí animándolos a no rendirse aunque se sientan desanimados. “A veces las oportunidades no llegan tan fácilmente, y requiere un poco de sacrificio, y eso vale la pena y te aseguro que no volverás a mirar atrás. No esperes a que sea demasiado tarde”. Estigarribia también quiso hacer una invitación especial a miembros de la comunidad hispana para asistir al concierto Coco in Concert de Disney Pixar el 18 de enero de 2020 en el Adler Theatre de Davenport, IA. “Estoy muy emocionado de dirigir Coco en una presentación en vivo en enero. Me gustaría ver a muchos miembros de nuestra comunidad hispana allí. No hay mejor manera de ver por primera vez un concierto de a una orquesta en vivo que con una película que todos amamos”, dijo. La música llevó a Ernesto Estigarribia más allá de las fronteras. Su amor por la música y su deseo de compartir sus conocimientos con jóvenes músicos, así como su amplia experiencia como violinista y director profesional, lo convertirán en uno de los mejores directores musicales para el Quad City Youth Symphony Ensemble. Ernesto Estigarribia the new conductor of the Quad City Youth Symphony Orchestra By Anastassia Zvoryguina Music surpasses borders. It unites people, no matter how different they are. People don’t even need to speak the same language to like the same music. In order for people to enjoy music, musicians have to perform and play the instruments and big orchestras have to have conductors leading and directing musicians to play the best way possible. Last year the Quad City Symphony Orchestra (QCSO) hired a new conductor for the Youth Symphony Orchestra and Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Ernesto Estigarribia. Mr. Estigarribia is the greatest example of the music surpassing borders. Originally, from Asuncion, Paraguay, as long as he remembers this musician has been passionately devoted to music. “I started my musical studies at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Paraguay. Early on I have felt a strong sense of commitment and devotion for the serious study of music,” Ernesto Estigarribia shared about the importance of music in his life. “I used to practice many hours a day, sometimes 8 hours a day when I had the time. This seemed normal to me, that at the moment I had to choose a career path the answer was obvious.” Clearly, a person that studies music with such passion, that it might even sound borderline obsessive, could not do anything else but become a professional musician. For years Estigarribia was a professional violinist in the Orquestra Sinfonica Nacional (National Symphonic Orchestra) in his native Paraguay. Even though he is a great violinist, he wanted to go further and become a conductor. “Ever since I saw an orchestra as a young child, I was mesmerized by the leadership that conductors had. I felt as an instrumentalist I wasn’t able to
lead as much as I felt the urge. I am told that I have always shown natural leadership abilities from early on, and my music-making is no different. To be a conductor one must have experience. In my case I was a professional violinist in Paraguay,” he spoke of his journey from professional violinist to orchestra conductor. “After getting a wealth of experience as a professional instrumentalist and playing a ton of chamber music and felt I was ready to start the serious study of conducting.” His professionalism in music, his extensive experience as a violinist, his natural leadership abilities and of course his immense love for music brought him to another country. In 2010 Ernesto Estigarribia came to the United States and before landing a position with the QCSO, he got a job as an Artistic Director of the Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestra in Rochester, MN. At the same time, he was in the process of getting his doctorate degree in music from the University of Minnesota. In 2018 the QCSO hired this young and upcoming conductor as QCSYE (Quad Cities Youth Symphony Ensemble) Music Director and QCSO Assistant Conductor. Now that conductor Estigarribia settled into his position with QCSO, he is looking forward to sharing his experience with young musicians. He mentioned that as Music Director of QCSYE he would like to introduce to young musicians some of the Latin American composers that many might have not heard of before. Most people are very familiar with composers like Bach and Tchaikovsky, but not many know who Clarice Assad and Arturo Marquez are. Sharing these and many other Latin-Americans composers with young musicians is sort of a mission for conductor Estigarribia. But this is not his only goal in this new position. “My immediate plans are to build
upon the already excellent Youth Ensembles program we have in the Quad Cities and develop access to more young musicians from our diverse community,’ Estigarribia shared his plans for the future of QCSYO. He added that QCSYE is a great program, “that offers young musicians the chance to play at a higher level. Our orchestras and choir have multiple performances throughout the season. Through the orchestra art, young musicians improve their musicianship and also advance life skills that will enable them to be functional members of society.” Besides his job as Music Director of two advanced orchestras for youth in the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra Program, he also shared that he will continue his guest appearance as a conductor in South America. Last year he was invited as a guest conductor in Paraguay and Argentina. At his young age, Ernesto Estigarribia reached a lot as a professional musician and now a conductor. He studied music because he loved to study music, along the way he learned the importance of going beyond just technique and learned that as a musician and conductor he has to be very sensitive to human emotions. He learned that music has to move people’s hearts. Everything he learned is thanks to his belief that opportunities are there to be taken advantage of and only those that try their best and go beyond the average will reach the stars. “My piece of advice is to take advantage of the many opportunities that are out there. If the opportunity is perhaps a bit out of your reach, mueve cielo y tierra ([move land and sky]), as we say in Spanish to make it happen,” Ernesto Estigarribia gave advice to all young musicians out there encouraging them to not give up even if they feel down. “Sometimes opportunities don’t come
so easily, and it requires a bit of sacrifice, and that is totally worth it and I guarantee you’ll never look back. Don’t wait until it is too late.” Estigarribia also wanted to extend a special invitation to members of the Hispanic community to attend Disney Pixar’s Coco in Concert on January 18, 2020 at the Adler Theatre in Davenport, IA. “I am very excited to conduct Coco in a live-to-movie performance in January. I would love to see many members of our Hispanic Community in there. There is no better way to be introduced to a live orchestra concert experience than with a movie we all love,” he said. Music took Ernesto Estigarribia across borders. His love for music and desire to share his knowledge with young musicians as well as his extensive experience as a professional violinist and conductor will sure turn him into one of the best Music directors for the Quad City Youth Symphony Ensemble. Disney Pixar’s Coco in Concert live to Film will be on January 18, 2020, at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM. There will be special pre show activities with performances by the Quad Cities Ballet Folklorico and Glenview School Mariachi Band. Some of the Mercado on Fifth vendors will be there as well. Estudiante no tradicional encuentra su camino en Black Hawk College Llegó a los Estados Unidos a la edad de 15 años, casada, embarazada y llena de esperanza. “Nos venimos porque quería que mi bebé tuviera un futuro mejor”, dijo Alma Lievanos. “Sabía que si me quedaba en México, no podría darle la educación o la vida que se merece.” Su hijo es ahora estudiante universitario de 20 años. Aunque se cambió para buscar oportunidades educativas para su familia, no fue hasta hace cinco años que ella misma se benefició de esas oportunidades en el Black Hawk College (BHC). EMPEZANDO EN BLACK HAWK COLLEGE Cuando el mayor de los hijos estaba buscando opciones universitarias en 2015, ella comenzó a investigar universidades para ayudarlo y recibió ánimos para que ella misma buscara su educación. Al principio, no creía que asistir a la escuela fuera posible o que fuera lo adecuado para ella después de pasar tantos años enfocada en criar a sus hijos y trabajar, pero luego se dio cuenta de las clases de Educación para Adultos que ofrece el Colegio Comunitario Black Hawk. Entre lo más destacado se incluye el haber sido presidente de ALAS y haber asistido a las conferencias del Instituto de Liderazgo Hispano de los Estados Unidos en Chicago. Lievanos dijo que cuando escuchó a Richard Montañez hablar en una de las conferencias su testimonio se le quedó grabado. El orador motivacional inventó los Flamin’ Hot Cheetos mientras trabajaba en mantenimiento en Frito Lay y ascendió a un puesto ejecutivo. Además de ser latinos, Lievanos y Montañez también tenían experiencias laborales en común. En el momento de la conferencia, Lievanos trabaja en el
equipo de mantenimiento en Augustana College. En febrero de 2019, fue ascendida a supervisora. “Es empezó en mantenimiento y ha llegado hasta allí. Yo puedo hacer lo mismo”, recuerda pensando mientras escuchaba la historia de Montañez. Lievanos también encontró una mentor a través del club. La asesora de ALAS, Gabriella Hurtado, gerente de reclutamiento del BHC, se convirtió rápidamente en una fuente de apoyo para Lievanos. “Ella no sólo me ayudó a orientarme en todo en el colegio, sino que siempre estaba allí cuando la necesitaba”, dijo. “Hubo ocasiones en las que me costaba hacer los deberes y venir a la escuela y todo eso. Siempre estaba ahí para ayudarme, animarme, impulsarme o sólo para orientarme”. En diciembre de 2019, Lievanos completó su última clase de Asociado en Artes. Está ansiosa por recorrer el escenario durante la ceremonia de inauguración en mayo de 2020 para celebrar sus años de arduo trabajo. “Nunca pensé que sería capaz de cambiar mi vida de esta manera”, dijo. Para poder asistir al colegio, tomó clases en línea y en el campus que empezaban por la tarde después del trabajo. La madre de tres hijos tiene ahora dos en la universidad, y el menor de ellos está en la escuela preparatoria. Cocinar mientras se hacía la tarea era
una rutina normal. Lograr el equilibrio entre el trabajo, la familia y el colegio ha servido de inspiración para su hijo. Mientras se enfrentaba a sus propios desafíos, dijo: “Si tú puedes hacerlo, yo puedo hacerlo”. VIENDO AL FUTURO Lievanos planea continuar su camino hacia la universidad en el otoño de 2020 con una licenciatura en sociología en Augustana College. Después de graduarse, quiere un trabajo relacionado con la sociología donde pueda servir a la comunidad. Ella piensa dedicarse al trabajo social o a asuntos estudiantiles. El consejo de Lievanos para los futuros estudiantes de BHC es que si eres un estudiante del último año de la escuela secundaria o un estudiante no tradicional, Black Hawk College tiene mucho que ofrecer. Nontraditional student finds her path at Black Hawk College She arrived in the United States at age 15, married, pregnant and full of hope. “We moved because I wanted my baby to have a better future,” Alma Lievanos said. “I knew if I stayed in Mexico, I wouldn’t be able to give him the education or the life he deserves.” Her son is now a 20-year-old college student. Although she moved for educational opportunities for her family, it wasn’t until five years ago that she benefited from those opportunities herself at Black Hawk College.
STARTING AT BLACK HAWK COLLEGE When Lievanos’ oldest was exploring college possibilities in 2015, she began researching colleges to help him and she received encouragement to seek an education of her own. Initially, she didn’t think attending school was possible or the right fit for her after spending so many years focused on raising her children and working, but then she discovered BHC’s Adult Education offerings. Soon, she was pursuing her GED®. Three months later, she earned it. Liev-
anos then took developmental classes at Black Hawk College to make her eligible and prepared for college-level courses. After that, she began earning her Associate in Arts degree. “I chose Black Hawk College because it was the only college that provided the resources I needed to pursue an education,” Lievanos said. “I’m a nontraditional student, and Black Hawk College gave me the opportunity to change my life.” STUDYING AT BLACK HAWK COLLEGE
The Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) was one of the favorite parts about her time at Black Hawk College. Highlights included serving as ALAS president and attending United States Hispanic Leadership Institute conferences in Chicago. Lievanos said hearing Richard Montañez speak at one of the conferences stuck with her. The motivational speaker invented Flamin’ Hot Cheetos while working as a custodian at Frito Lay and rose to an executive role. In addition to being Latino, Lievanos and Montañez also had job experiences in common. At the time of the conference, Lievanos was a custodian at Augustana College. In February 2019, she was promoted to custodial supervisor. “He’s a custodian and made it all the way there. I can do the same thing,” she remembers thinking while listening to Montañez’s story. Lievanos also gained a mentor through the club. ALAS advisor Gabriella Hurtado, BHC recruiting manager, quickly became a source of support for Lievanos. “She not only helped me to navigate everything at school, but she was always there if I needed her,” she said. “There were some times when it was getting hard for me to do homework and come to school and everything. She was always there to help me out,
cheer me up, push me or just to show me the way.” In December 2019, Lievanos completed her last Associate in Arts class. She’s looking forward to walking across the stage during the commencement ceremony in May 2020 to celebrate her years of hard work. “I never thought I’d be able to change my life this way,” she said. To make attending college possible, she took online classes and on-campus classes that started in the afternoon after work. The mother of three now has two children in college, with her youngest in high school. Cooking while working on homework was a normal routine. Lievanos balancing work, family and college has served as an inspiration for her son. While dealing with his own challenges he has said, “If you can do it, I can do it.” LOOKING AHEAD Lievanos plans to continue her college journey in Fall 2020 by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Augustana College. After graduation, she wants a sociology-related job where she can serve the community. She plans to work in social work or student affairs. Lievanos’ advice for prospective BHC students is that whether you are a high school senior or a nontraditional student, Black Hawk College has a lot to offer. Thanks to the wide range of programs available at Black Hawk College, Lievanos is now on a path she didn’t initially think was possible for herself. “No matter what your goals are in education, Black Hawk College can help you to achieve it,” she said. “BHC advisors can help you to create the perfect path.”

Spanish Caucus location approved in Muscatine for Iowa Caucus The League of United Latin American Citizens of Muscatine (LULAC) has announced that there will be a bilingual caucus location for Spanish speaking Muscatine voters who want to participate in the first-in-the-nation caucuses on February 3rd, 2020.
