El gobierno de Biden publicó en mayo una normativa final, que entrará en vigor el 1 de noviembre, que permitirá a los beneficiarios de DACA “solicitar cobertura a través de HealthCare. gov y de los mercados estatales, donde pueden optar a asistencia financiera para ayudarles a adquirir un seguro médico de calidad”.

Sterling, IL- Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos regresa a la Iglesia de Santa Maria en Sterling, IL desde el domingo 4 de agosto al miercoles 7 de agosto del 2024.
Nuestra Señora de San Juan de los Lagos es considerada la segunda imagen más visitada por peregrinos en México (La Virgen de Guadalupe de Cerro de Tepeyac es la más visitada). Se cree que esta imagen pequeña es milagrosa. Desde 1632, ella fue conocida como alguien que ayuda en casos de peligro mortal. La imagen original de la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos se ubica en Jalisco, México.
Aunque la imagen original fue hecha con pasta de Michoacán, que es una simple mezcla de hojas de elote y pegamento, después de años de existencia la imagen no se deterioró. La imagen es de la Virgen parada con sus manos juntas en oración. Ella trae un vestido azul con estrellas puesto y hay una medialuna en sus pies y dos angelitos sostienen un listón arriba de su cabeza con siguientes palabras escritas en ella: “Mater inmaculata ora pro nobis” (Madre Inmaculada, Reza por Nosotros).
Desde el año 2014 (excepto unos años despues de la pandemia) la Virgen de San Juan de los Lagos viene a la Iglesia de Santa Maria ubicada en 509 Avenida B en Sterling, IL. A lo largo de los cuatro días de la presencia de la imagen en la iglesia habrá eventos, misas especiales y rezos. Siguiente es el horario de los eventos.

El Gran Debate del Medio Oeste: Una semana mágica de aprendizaje y desarrollo en el Augustana College

Rock Island, IL- Del 2 al 7 de julio de 2024, el Augustana College de Rock Island, Illinois, se transformó en un centro de enriquecimiento intelectual e intercambio cultural al albergar la vigésima edición anual del Midwest Great Debate (MWGD), organizado por el National Hispanic Institute (NHI). Durante los seis días que dura el evento, los estudiantes participan en debates y discursos destinados a mejorar sus habilidades oratorias y el manejo del lenguaje, al tiempo que colaboran para ganar premios. Luis Jáuregui, Director Educativo del MWGD, describió el evento como “mágico”, destacando las experiencias transformadoras compartidas tanto por los participantes como por los organizadores. La trayectoria de Jáuregui con el MWGD comenzó en 2012, y su experiencia ha sido muy impactante. De participante escéptico a líder entusiasta, ha visto de primera mano el poder transformador de los debates. Las amistades y los contactos creados a través de NHI han
dado forma a su vida, inculcándole un profundo sentido de comunidad y propósito.
Este año, 87 estudiantes de una multitud de regiones, incluyendo Illinois, Iowa, México y Oklahoma, convergieron en el Augustana College, trayendo consigo una riqueza de perspectivas que enriquecieron el debate. Jáuregui declaró: “Esperamos que esta tendencia continúe y que nos encontremos con muchos más participantes de distintas partes del mundo. Sus diversas perspectivas enriquecerán sin duda nuestras charlas en el Gran Debate del Medio Oeste”.
Jáuregui destacó la timidez inicial de los participantes y cómo fue floreciendo a medida que avanzaba el debate. “Nos dimos cuenta de que este grupo de participantes era tímido desde el principio. Jáuregui le llama la atención un incidente en particular. “Una de las cosas que más me gustó ver fue la voluntad de superar la adversidad a lo largo del concurso. Uno de nuestros participantes empezó la competición en Cross Examination, una categoría en pareja. Por desgracia, su compañero tuvo que irse a casa antes de tiempo, así que no pudo continuar en su categoría. A pesar de ello, no dejó que eso rompiera su ánimo. Al final, fue invitado a participar en nuestra cuarta categoría, Ateneo, donde él y su equipo acabaron obteniendo el primer puesto”. El tema general de los debates de este año fueron las narrativas sociales, que invitaban a los participantes a reflexionar y compartir sus experiencias vividas. sólo perfeccionó sus habilidades para hablar en público, sino que también profundizó su comprensión de su herencia cultural y del impacto duradero de las figuras históricas latinas. La diversidad de los participantes desempeñó un papel crucial en los retos lingüísticos planteados durante los debates. Los participantes de México debatieron en inglés, mientras que los estadounidenses se enfrentaron al español, lo que les hizo salir de su zona de confort y mejorar su dominio del idioma. A pesar de las dificultades, la camaradería y el apoyo mutuo entre los participantes fueron evidentes mientras sorteaban juntos los obstáculos lingüísticos.
El sentimiento de comunidad y seguridad que se fomentó en el MWGD fue uno de los aspectos más destacados de los comentarios de los estudiantes. “Mi sentimiento favorito durante toda la semana fue oír a los participantes decir que se sentían seguros y como en familia en el Gran Debate del Medio Oeste”, expresó Jáuregui. Un estudiante, que se describía a sí mismo como tímido en su país, encontró un lugar donde podía expresarse abiertamente y con confianza.
Eventos como el MWGD sirven de puente hacia la educación superior para muchos participantes. Al experimentar de primera mano la vida universitaria -viviendo en residencias, comiendo en la cafetería y asistiendo a talleres-, los estudiantes empiezan a visualizarse como futuros universitarios. Jáuregui compartió su experiencia personal de cómo el MWGD le ayudó a encontrar la universidad de sus sueños en Augustana College, un sentimiento que espera que resuene también en los participantes de este año.
Augustana College ha sido el hogar del MWGD durante dos décadas, proporcionando un telón de fondo familiar y de apoyo para el evento. El recién renovado Wallenberg Hall, que no estuvo disponible el año pasado durante las obras, aumentó la resonancia emocional y el entusiasmo del personal y los participantes, reforzando los profundos vínculos que muchos tienen con el campus.
Las instituciones College Register del NHI desempeñan un papel importante en el apoyo al MWGD. Jauregui confirma este impacto: “Al animar a los participantes a desarrollar una mentalidad basada en la comunidad a una edad tan temprana, podemos seguir desarrollando a los que nos rodean, incluso si no participaron en un programa de NHI. NHI no es sólo otro programa de verano que te enseña sobre oratoria y debate. Las lecciones que aprendí con NHI siguen influyendo en mi trabajo y lo harán el resto de mi vida”. Bix 7 celebra 50 años de correr con los mejores

Davenport, IA- Han pasado cinco años desde que la actual directora de la carrera Bix 7, Michelle Burnett Juehring, tomó las riendas para dirigir el mayor evento veraniego de corredores de la zona. Esta carrera de 7 millas por el centro de Davenport atrae a caminantes, corredores, bandas de música y multitudes que la vitorean. La primera vez que dirigió la carrera fue el mismo año en que todo el
mundo del deporte se vio obligado a volverse virtual, y el 50 aniversario del Bix, cinco años después, no estaba en su radar. “ En aquel momento no me di cuenta de que se acercaba el 50º aniversario”, explica Burnett Juehring. “En 2020, todo cambió para los eventos deportivos masivos. Estamos tratando de devolver esa normalidad y emoción en la que puedes salir y no pensar en lo que pasó.” A menos de un mes de la carrera, ella y su equipo están entusiasmados con la celebración del 50 aniversario de la carrera de los Bix 7.
El recorrido de la carrera seguirá siendo el mismo, al igual que el Bix Jr. y el Quick Bix. La última incorporación a las festividades de la semana es el Bechtel Trust Sr. Bix del martes por la noche. “Ed (Froehlich) tuvo la idea de homenajear a los atletas que nos llevaron a los cincuenta años”, explica Burnett Juehring. “ Debes tener cincuenta años o más y, al inscribirte en el Bix, esa carrera te sale gratis también. Pensamos que si tienes cincuenta años o más y has corrido la Bix, ya has pagado tu cuota”. El lema de este año es “Vamos a por el oro”. Con los Juegos Olímpicos de París que comienzan el mismo fin de semana y antiguos olímpicos que se unen a la carrera, Burnett Juering cree que la Bix 7 es el estándar de oro de lo que debe ser un evento de carreras y quiere que todos los que vengan sientan lo mismo. “Creo que la gente se siente bienvenida cuando llega aquí”, afirma Burnett Juehring. “Trabajamos muy duro para que sea de primera clase, desde la camiseta hasta la comida y la zona de
exposición. Tienes la sensación de estar en una gran ciudad como Nueva York o Chicago, pero es aquí mismo, en Davenport, Iowa, en los Quad Cities. Nuestra comunidad lo acepta de verdad. No podríamos hacerlo sin el apoyo de nuestra comunidad”.
Con cinco años a sus espaldas como directora de la carrera y veintiuno con la organización de la Bix, Burnett Juehring se enorgullece de mejorar el evento cada año. “Me gustaría pensar que estoy honrando la herencia que tenemos y asegurándome de que nuestra carrera vuelve a nuestras raíces”, dijo Burnett Juehring. “Me considero una jugadora/entrenadora en el sentido de que estoy continuando el legado que tenemos y preparándolo para quien tome el relevo de la organización y corra con él”.

Sterling, IL- Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos is returning to St. Mary’s Church in Sterling, IL from Sunday, August 4 to Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos is considered the second most visited image by pilgrims in Mexico (The first most visited is the Virgin of Guadalupe on Cerro de Tepeyac). It is believed that this small image is miraculous. Since 1632, she has been associated with helping with problems that involve mortal danger. The original image of Our Lady of San Juan de Los Lagos is in Jalisco, Mexico.
Even though the original image has been made of paste from Michoacán, which is a simple mix of corn husks and glue, the image has not deteriorated over its many years of existence. This image is of the Virgin standing up with her hands joined in prayer. It has a blue gown with stars on it and a moon crescent at the bottom of her feet, and two small angels above her hold a ribbon with the written words “Mater inmaculata ora pro nobis” (Immaculate Mother, pray for us). Since 2014 (except for a few years after the pandemic), Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos has come to St. Mary’s Church located at 509 Avenue B in Sterling, IL. Booker, Castro urge feds to prepare for DACA recipients seeking health care access

Washington, D.C. -Worried about the outcome of the 2024 election, a slew of congressional Democrats called on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on Tuesday to take steps to ensure Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program recipients can actually access health insurance provided under the Affordable Care Act when they become eligible this year.
The Biden administration published a final rule in May, set to go into effect on Nov. 1, that will allow DACA recipients to “apply for coverage through HealthCare.gov and state-based marketplaces, where they may qualify for financial assistance to help them purchase quality health insurance.”
But for DACA recipients to take full advantage of the expansion as early as possible, HHS needs to put resources into outreach, Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Rep. Joaquin Castro of Texas and 86 other Democrats said in a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra and provided first to States Newsroom.
The lawmakers praised the recently finalized rule, while noting that “for this expansion to be successful, HHS must ensure that every newly eligible individual is fully informed and supported during the enrollment process.”
A total of 73 U.S. representatives and 15 U.S. senators from across the country signed the letter. The letter is dated Monday, when members agreed on the final language, and the lawmakers sent it to HHS on Tuesday.
With DACA recipients eligible for health insurance benefits as early as December if enrolled by Nov. 15, the lawmakers want to ensure that the recipients are “able to navigate the registration process so that they can take full advantage of their new access to medical care.”
The lawmakers pressed Becerra on the actual implementation of this imminent accessibility, including how the department plans to minimize barriers to enrollment for a group that has historically faced challenges in verifying their identity.
They also asked the secretary to address what steps the department will take to make sure the recipients are aware of the special enrollment period, what resources will be allocated for media outreach, how the department will ensure the information is shared to this group and how they will help prevent instances of scams or fraud targeting the recipients throughout the enrollment period.
HHS did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.
Future of DACA in the balance
The letter comes as DACA’s future remains unknown.
Former President Donald J. Trump — officially nominated Monday as the 2024 GOP presidential nominee — tried to end the program during his first term.
Recipients of DACA are awaiting a court case to determine the legality of the program after Trump sought to end it.
DACA — an Obama-era program created in 2012 — was designed to protect children who were brought into the country illegally from deportation. The Biden administration said that its final rule released in May is set to help more than 100,000 uninsured young people.
Representatives for the 2024 Trump campaign did not respond to a request for comment on Tuesday regarding DACA.

Bix 7 celebrates 50 years of Running with the Best

Davenport, IA- It’s been five years since current Bix 7 Race Director Michelle Burnett Juehring took over the reins to lead the largest summer running event in the area. This 7-mile race through downtown Davenport attracts walkers, runners, bands and cheering crowds. When her first time directing the run landed on the same year that the entire sporting world was forced to go virtual, the Bix’s 50th anniversary five years down the road was nowhere on her radar. “It did not register then that the 50th was coming up,” said Burnett Juehring. “In 2020, everything changed for mass sporting events. We are trying to bring back that normalcy and excitement where you can go out and not think about what happened.” With less than a month to go, she and her race crew are excited to host the 50th anniversary of the running of the Bix 7.
The race course will stay the same along with the Jr. Bix and Quick Bix. The newest addition to the week’s festivities is The Bechtel Trust Sr. Bix on Tuesday night. “Ed (Froehlich) had this idea to honor the athletes that got us to fifty years,” explains Burnett Juehring. “You have to be fifty or older and when you sign up for the Bix, you get that race free as well. We figured if you are fifty and older and have run the Bix, you’ve paid your dues.”
This year’s motto is Go for the Gold. With the Paris Olympics kicking off the same weekend and former Olympians joining the race, Burnett Juering believes the Bix 7 is the gold standard of what a race event should be and wants everyone coming to feel the same. “I think people feel welcomed when they get here,” says Burnett Juehring. “We work really hard to make it first-class from the t-shirt to the food and the expo. You have the feeling that you are in a big city like New York or Chicago, but it’s right here in Davenport, Iowa in the Quad Cities. Our community really embraces that. We couldn’t do it without our community supporting us as much as they do.”
With five years under her belt as the race director and twenty-one years with the Bix organization, Burnett Juehring prides herself on growing a better event each year. “I’d like to think that I’m honoring the heritage that we have and making sure that our race goes back to our roots,” said Burnett Juehring. “I consider myself a player/coach in that I am continuing the legacy we have and setting it up for the next person when they take the baton and run with it.”
Whether this is your first or fiftieth Bix 7 race, Burnett Juehring hopes you embrace all that this race entails. “When we talk about, Run with the Best, you not only have a seat at the table so to speak, but you are on the same course as some elite and Olympic athletes,” says Burnett Juehring. “And that just makes whether you are a runner, walker or jogger feel like one big family. So, buckle in because you are in for quite the ride!”

Midwest Great Debate: A Magical Week of Learning and Growth at Augustana College

Rock Island, IL- From July 2nd to July 7th, 2024, Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, transformed into a hub of intellectual rigor and cultural exchange as it hosted the 20th annual Midwest Great Debate (MWGD) under the National Hispanic Institute (NHI). During the six-day event students will participate in debates and speeches intended to improve their speaking skills and word management while working together to win prizes. Luis Jauregui, the Educational Director for the MWGD, described the event as “magical,” highlighting the transformative experiences shared by participants and organizers alike. Jauregui’s journey with the MWGD began in 2012, and his experience has been profoundly impactful. From a skeptical participant to an enthusiastic leader, he has seen firsthand the transformative power of the debates. The friendships and connections made through NHI have shaped his life, instilling a deep sense of community and purpose. This year, 87 students from a multitude of regions, including Illinois, Iowa, Mexico, and Oklahoma, converged at Augustana College, bringing with them a wealth of per-
spectives that enriched the debate. Jauregui stated, “We hope this trend continues and that we will meet many more participants from different parts of the world. Their diverse perspectives will undoubtedly enrich our conversations at the Midwest Great Debate.”
Jauregui noted the initial shyness of the participants and how they blossomed as the debate progressed. “We could tell this group of participants was shy from the beginning. That said, we could also recognize how smart they were on the first day. Once they were comfortable, it was amazing to see the types of conversations and confidence they demonstrated throughout the rest of the week and during the final round on stage.” A particular incident stands out to Jauregui. “One of my favorite things to see was the willingness to overcome adversity throughout the competition. One of our participants started the competition in Cross Examination, a partner category. Unfortunately, his partner had to go home early, so he could not continue in his category. Despite that, he never let that break his spirit. In the end, he was invited into our fourth category, Athenaeum, where he and his team ended up taking first place!”
The overarching theme for this year’s debates was so-
cial narratives, inviting participants to reflect on and share their lived experiences. One especially impactful topic came from the Oratory category, where students presented speeches on individuals or events in history that have significantly influenced the Latino community. This exercise not only honed their public speaking skills but also deepened their understanding of their cultural heritage and the lasting impacts of historical Latino figures.
The diversity of the participants played a crucial role in the language challenges posed during the debates. Mexican participants debated in English, while U.S. participants tackled Spanish, pushing them out of their comfort zones and enhancing their language proficiency. Despite the struggles, the camaraderie and mutual support among the participants was evident as they navigated linguistic hurdles together.
The sense of community and safety fostered at the MWGD was a recurring highlight in the students’ feedback. “My favorite sentiment throughout the week was hearing participants share that they felt safe and like a family at the Midwest Great Debate,” Jauregui expressed. One student, who described himself as shy back home, found a place where he could express himself openly and confidently.
Events like the MWGD serve as a bridge to higher education for many participants. By experiencing college life firsthand—living in dorms, dining in the cafeteria, and attending workshops—students begin to visualize themselves as future college students. Jauregui shared his personal experience of how the MWGD helped him find his dream college at Augustana College, a sentiment he hopes will resonate with this year’s participants as well.
Augustana College has been the home of the MWGD for two decades, providing a familiar and supportive backdrop for the event. The newly renovated Wallenberg Hall, which was unavailable last year while under construction, added to the emotional resonance and excitement for returning staff and participants, reinforcing the deep connections many have with the campus.
NHI’s College Register institutions play a significant role in supporting the MWGD. According to the NHI website, “the College Register is a membership organization that actively recruits college-eligible high school students who are enrolled in the National Hispanic Institute.” Representatives like Liz Nino from Augustana College help recruit and welcome participants, creating a sense of belonging and continuity. As the MWGD looks to the future, Jauregui expressed confidence in the next generation of leaders who will take on more responsibilities. NHI’s programs go beyond teaching debate skills; they instill a community-based mindset in young leaders. Many alumni have gone on to successful careers in various fields, continuing to set examples for future participants. By fostering leadership and encouraging participants to push their limits, NHI helps shape future leaders who are committed to making a positive impact on their communities. NHI boasts impressive outcomes like 98% college attendance rate and most graduate within 4-5 years.
Jauregui confirms this impact, “By encouraging participants to develop a communitybased mindset at such a young age, we can continue to develop those around us, even if they did not participate in an NHI program. NHI is not just another summer program that teaches you about speech and debate. NHI is a summer leadership program that teaches you about life, how to carry yourself and value the lessons your family has taught you, and helps you make connections that will last a lifetime. The lessons I learned with NHI continue to influence my work and will do so for the rest of my life.”
