Since its creation in 2008 the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit has helped thousands of aspiring business owners. Last year it started to expand to other states beyond Iowa and this year on July 20 it is coming back to Moline, IL for a second time with a promise to be bigger and better. “IES Illinois this year is the second event that we are having,” Dan Kim one of the organizers stated. “And the second year of this event is coming with a lot of expectations.” Mr. Kim explained that last year the attendance reached about 200 people, but this year the IES is expecting anywhere between 300 to 350 participants. The event will hold nine seminars this year as well, but there will be a couple of new important topics presented to the attendees during the seminars. “We’ll have nine seminars talking about how to start your busi-

ness, how to grow your business, and how to make sure that you are legally protecting yourself from your business and your business by itself,” Mr. Kim described some topics that will be presented during the IES event in Moline, IL. “So, a lot of information will be very helpful for a lot of people, we’ll even cover insurance this year. So, that’s something new.” Besides important information, there will be an award ceremony as well. Three recipients will receive awards in categories like leadership and lifetime achievement. “They will be in the categories of leadership, so that will be the spirit award, that’s a lifetime achievement award, then there is the champion award and then there is the outstanding business award,” Mr. Kim told. “So, this year we have merged the leadership and the spirit award. Last year they were separated, but this year we felt we could combine them.” Dan Kim extended his invitation

The East Moline Paletera Project is ready to cool you off this summer By Anastassia Zvoryguina What can be better than a fruity cold popsicle on a hot summer day? The answer to this question is a popsicle or paleta that helps young people from the community to learn about business while fundraising to pay for their class trip. By now probably many residents of the Quad Cities are familiar with the EM Paletero Project from last year now rebranded The East Moline Paletera Project. Last year it was the first year when two Glenview students participated in this business opportunity. It is not a project to be taken lightly. It requires students to be serious and dedicated to work. This project also teaches many valuable skills that will be useful to the participants in their future endeavors. The Paletera Project runs all summer and participants go to various community events to sell paletas (Mexican style popsicle). The funds they will collect from sales will be used for their 8th-grade class summer DC/NYC trip. “The purpose of the project has been to help two Glenview Middle School 8thgrade students to earn funds needs to pay for their 8th grade DC/NYC trip,” Margarita Mojica, the person in charge of this project, explained. “These are students who otherwise would not be able to afford the trip. The students we have worked with are driven and determined to see the project succeed.” She also added that the Paletera Project teaches the two student participants about what it takes to run a business and ways to communicate with the community. “The business teaches students about entrepreneurship as well as self-confidence, leadership and helps build a strong work ethic,” Ms. Mojica listed the advantages that students get from participating in the Paletera Project. Even though this project is just entering its second year, Ms. Mojica announced that she will not be overseeing it next year. “I am looking forward to passing the project onto another person or organization in the QC,” Ms. Mojica stated. “This is summer-only project because it is time-

consuming with start-up business meetings and sales dates. Paletas sell best during summertime.” While Ms. Mojica hopes the Paletera Project will find a new person who will be able to take over it and guide two new participants next year, she also shared about this year’s participants and changes that are going to make this project even better. This year’s participants are 8th graders Gabriella A. and Jessica M. Also, Lupe C., Debora M., Beyonce G., and Sofia M. are the high school seniors who will be part of the Paletera Project this year, 3 of them are first generation college bound. “They are volunteering their time to help guide the middle school girls,” Ms. Mojica explained. “Along the way they are learning about business and leadership.” Many media outlets dubbed this year as a year of the woman. Women and girls all over the country are coming out to support each other and causes that are dear to them. There is no better way to celebrate females than the business opportunity that involves girls. “This summer’s all girls crew honors the 100-year anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment by Congress in June 4, 1919,” Ms. Mojica explained how this year’s Paletera Project is a perfect way to celebrate the year of the woman. While this is a great way to honor the women and girls in 2019, unfortunately, this year the project is kicking of pretty late in the summer. “We had planned to launch the business during the first week of June this summer,” Ms. Mojica shared. “However, the theft of the original Paletero trike caused the delay. Most of it was recovered (not the umbrella or freezer) but it was in bad shape. The original trike is being repaired. We do have two other trikes that will be used to sell water and Mexican cokes this summer.” While the girls are facing some obstacles, they are not about to give up on this. The 8th graders set up the goal of raising $1400 each and additional $200 for traveling essentials. The high school girls are taking on the Paletera Project to help the younger girls and along the way learn important les-

sons about leadership that would be helpful to them in the future no matter where it takes them. “There will be a soft opening on July 2, from 5pm-7pm in the outside patio area of Country Style Ice Cream store, 4115 Kennedy Drive in East Moline,” Ms. Mojica shared the locations where the girls will be selling paletas, inviting the community to support the Paletera Project. “The official kick-off will be at the July 4th East Moline Parade. Girls will then sell at the Sunday Summer Concert Series at Runners Park in East Moline from 4pm-8pm. They will occasionally sell on Fridays at Mercado in Moline.” Ms. Mojica mentioned that the girls will also sell a limited number of T-shirts to support the Paletera Project. “All the funds from paletas, water, cocacolas, and T-shirts will go towards the cost of sending Gabriella and Jessica on the DC/NYC trip,” Ms. Mojica said. “Any extra money will be used as scholarship money for the 3 high school volunteers who are also first-generation college-bound in their families.” Ms. Mojica further explained that the Paletera Project will wrap up this year’s season in mid-September. Their last sales date will be during the Mexican Independence Day parade in East Moline. For updated information about where community members can find the girls selling paletas please

Bound Facebook page, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. “We humbly ask the community once again to support the all girls crew of the EM Paletera Project this summer,” Ms. Mojica asked the Quad Cities residents. “100% of profits from every T-Shirt, paleta, water and Mexican cokes sales goes to helping youth working on the project this summer. The girls also have an account at IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union for those who would rather help with a donation. Their account is the EM Paletero Project: DC Bound. While summer usually means fun in the sun for most young people, the participants of the EM Paletera Project are planning to do more than just sit by the pool all summer. The girls are gearing up to learn a little about the inner works of running a business and taking on a leadership role in the community. Of course, they cannot do this without the support of the Quad Cities community. “One of the best parts of the EM Paletera Project is witnessing the progress that is made towards their goal,” Ms. Mojica invites residents of the Quad Cities to look favorably on this year’s all girls crew of the EM Paletera Project. “The journey/story and progress will all be posted and updated on social media so please join and begin following their story.”

Guillermo Naranjo Piñera, a Club America legend, he was a player for more than 10 years and was part of the National team representing Mexico in 19881989. He is now the Sports Director of the Parent School and Affiliates of Club América and together with Lic. Jorge Osio, Operations Manager of Nido Águila and Profe. Javier Vallejos, visited Moline to make official the Nido Aguila Quad Cities.

During their stay here the Nido Aguila representatives from Mexico had training seminars for the children members, for the coaches, had interviews with Hola America and KALA en Español radio and attended Mercado on Fifth to take pictures with the fans of Club America. LULAC Moline Lowrider Car Show LULAC Moline celebró su primera exhibición anual de autos Lowrider el pasado domingo 9 de junio en Runners Park en honor al fallecido Jeff Guthrie, un empresario y líder comunitario de East Moline, y para recaudar fondos para becas locales. El proyecto East Moline Paletera está listo para refrescarnos este verano Por Anastassia Zvoryguina ¿Qué puede ser mejor que una paleta de fruta en un caluroso día de verano? La respuesta a esta pregunta es una paleta que también ayuda a los jóvenes de la comunidad a aprender sobre negocios mientras recaudan fondos para pagar su viaje escolar. A estas alturas, probablemente muchos residentes de los Quad Cities ya están familiarizados con el Proyecto EM Paletero del año pasado que ahora se llama The East Moline Paletera Project. El año pasado fue el primero en el que dos estudiantes de Glenview participaron en esta oportunidad de negocios. No es un proyecto para tomarse a la ligera. Requiere que los estudiantes sean serios y dedicados con el trabajo. Este proyecto también enseña muchas habilidades valiosas que serán útiles para los participantes en sus esfuerzos futuros. El Proyecto Paletera se realizará durante todo el verano y los participantes estarán en varios eventos comunitarios para vender paletas de estilo mexicano. Los fondos

que recaudarán de las ventas se utilizarán para su viaje de verano a DC / NYC de 8º grado. “El propósito del proyecto ha sido ayudar a dos estudiantes de 8º grado de Glenview Middle School a obtener los fondos necesarios para pagar su viaje de 8º grado a DC / NYC”, explicó Margarita Mojica, la persona a cargo de este proyecto. “Son estudiantes que de otra manera no podrían costear el viaje. Los estudiantes con los que hemos trabajado están motivados y decididos a que el proyecto sea un éxito”. Agregó también que el Proyecto Paletera le enseña a las dos estudiantes participantes lo que se necesita para dirigir un negocio y la manera de acercarse a la comunidad. “El negocio enseña a los estudiantes iniciativa empresarial, así como confianza en sí mismos, liderazgo y ayuda a construir una sólida ética de trabajo”, enumeró la Sra. segundo año, la Sra. Mojica anunció que ella ya no lo supervisará el próximo año. “Estoy buscando pasar el proyecto a otra persona u organización en los QC”, dijo la Sra. Mojica. “Este es un proyecto solo para el verano que requiere mucho tiempo para reuniones de lanzamiento y fechas de ventas. Las paletas se venden mejor durante el verano”. Aunque la Sra. Mojica espera que el Proyecto Paletera encuentre una nueva persona que pueda asumirlo y guiar a dos nuevos participantes el próximo año, también compartió sobre los participantes de este año y los cambios que harán que este proyecto sea aún mejor. Los participantes de este año son las estudiantes de octavo grado Gabriella A. y Jessica M. Además, Lupe C., Debora M., Beyonce G. y Sofia M. son las estudiantes de último año de preparatoria que formarán parte del Proyecto Paletera este año, 3 de ellas son la primera generación en su familia que planea ir a la universidad. “Están dando su tiempo como voluntar-

ias para orientar a las niñas de la escuela intermedia”, explicó la Sra. Mojica. “En el camino están aprendiendo sobre negocios y liderazgo”. Muchos medios de comunicación nombraron a este año como el año de la mujer. Las mujeres y las niñas de todo el país se apoyan mutuamente y causas que les son muy importantes a ellas. No hay mejor manera de celebrar a las mujeres que una oportunidad de negocios que las involucra. “Este grupo de muchachas busca este verano honorar los 100 años de la aprobación de la 19ª Enmienda por parte del Congreso el 4 de junio de 1919 (el cual le dió el derecho de voto a la mujer)”, explicó Mojica. El Proyecto Paletera de este año es la manera perfecta de celebrar el año de la mujer. Si bien esta es una excelente manera de honorar a las mujeres y las niñas en 2019, desafortunadamente, el proyecto comenzó bastante tarde este verano. Continúa en la página siguiente

Continúa de la página anterior “Habíamos planeado lanzar el negocio durante la primera semana de junio”, compartió la Sra. Mojica. “Sin embargo, el robo del triciclo original Paletero causó el retraso. La mayor parte se recuperó (pero no el paraguas ni el congelador) pero estaba en mal estado. El triciclo original está siendo reparado. Tenemos otros dos triciclos que se utilizarán para vender agua y coca colas mexicanas este verano “. Aunque las chicas se están enfrentando a algunos obstáculos, no están dispuestas a renunciar. Las estudiantes de 8º grado establecieron la meta de recaudar $ 1400 cada una y $ 200 adicionales para lo esencial del viaje. Las niñas de la escuela secundaria están asumiendo el Proyecto Paletera para ayudar a las niñas más pequeñas y, en el camino, aprender lecciones importantes sobre liderazgo que serán útiles para ellas en el futuro, sin importar a dónde las lleve. “Habrá una breve apertura el 2 de julio, de 5 pm a 7 pm en el patio exterior de la tienda de helados Country Style, 4115 Kennedy Drive en East Moline”, la sra. Mojica compartió los lugares donde las niñas venderán paletas, invitando a la comunidad para apoyar el Proyecto Paletera. “El lanzamiento oficial será el 4 de julio en el Desfile de East Moline. Después venderán en el Sunday Summer Concert Series en Runners Park en East Moline de 4 pm a 8 pm los domingos. Y de vez en cuando lo harán los viernes en Mercado on Fifth en Moline”. La Sra. Mojica mencionó que las niñas también venderán un número limitado de camisetas para apoyar el Proyecto Paletera. “Todos los fondos de paletas, agua, coca-colas y camisetas se destinarán para cubrir los gastos de viaje de Gabriella y Jessica a DC / NYC”, dijo Mojica. “Cualquier dinero extra se usará para becas de las 3 voluntarias de la escuela secundaria que también son primera generación de sus fa-

milias que irá a la universidad “. La Sra. Mojica explicó además que el Proyecto Paletera concluirá la temporada de este año a mediados de septiembre. Su última fecha de ventas será durante el desfile del Día de la Independencia de México en East Moline. Las chicas también tienen una cuenta en IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union para quienes prefieran ayudar con una donación. Su cuenta es el proyecto EM Paletero: DC Bound. Si bien el verano generalmente significa diversión bajo el sol para la mayoría de los jóvenes, las participantes del Proyecto EM Paletera planean hacer algo más que sentarse junto a la piscina durante todo el verano. Las niñas se están preparando para aprender un poco sobre lo que significa iniciar y dirigir una empresa y asumir un papel de liderazgo en la comunidad. Por supuesto, no pueden hacerlo sin el apoyo de la comunidad de Quad Cities. “Una de las mejores partes del Proyecto EM Paletera es presenciar el progreso que se está logrando hacia su meta”, la Sra. Mojica invita a los residentes de Quad Cities a mirar favorablemente al grupo de muchachas del Proyecto Paletera de este año. “El viaje / historia y el progreso se publicarán y actualizarán en las redes sociales, así que únete y comienza a seguir su historia”.

LULAC Moline presenta Show de Carros LULAC Moline held their First Annual Lowrider Car Show last Sunday June 9 at Runners Park in honor of the late Jeff Guthrie an East Moline businessman and community leader and to raise funds for local scholarships. Participants were able to show their love and passion for cars and get the community together to help raise funds for students in our area. “It’s just a good way to get people mingling, you meet people involved other organizations,” said Matt Hernandez a member of the Latin Persuasion Car Club who will be having their annual car show to celebrate their 25th anniversary on July 20th at the plumbers and pipe-fitters Union located at 4600 46th Ave. in Rock Island, IL starting at 9am.
