Casa de Los Niños y Museo de Arte Figge Celebran el Mes de Herencia Hispana Puede ser que ya se acabó el mes de la Herencia Hispana, pero el centro de cuidado de los niños bilingüe de Moline, Casa de Los Niños, continua celebrando hasta los principios de noviembre. Casa de Los Niños está colaborando con el Museo de Arte Figge de Davenport, IA y tendrán una exposición de Catrinas para el Día de los Muertos Fiesta el domingo 1 de noviembre de las 12 PM hasta las 5 PM. Habrá otras ac-

tividades y este evento, que celebra la cultura hispana, es gratis para la comunidad. Siendo uno de pocos centros de cuidado de los niños bilingües en los Quad Cities, Casa de Los Niños tuvo cambios grandes en los últimos meses y por primera vez en su existencia ellos tuvieron un evento para recaudar fondos en los principios del octubre. Tuvieron la noche de lotería para recaudar fondos. La noche fue

un éxito gracias a varias donaciones de los negocios locales. Familias y amigos asistieron el evento para una causa buena. En la cultura donde la población se está mezclando rápidamente, Casa de Los Niños se posiciona como un lugar con ambiente multicultural. “Es bueno para los niños que no saben hablar inglés porque se sienten confortables hablando español con otros niños que son iguales a ellos,”

Being one of the few bi-lingual child care centers in the Quad Cities, Casa de Los Niño’s Center Director, Benita Perez-DeLoach explains that their doors are open to everyone in the area. “A lot of people think that only those who speak Spanish can come here,” said Perez-DeLoach. “But anyone is welcome.” And Casa de Los Niños has gotten somewhat of a makeover in the last few months

as well and held its first fundraiser at the beginning of October, a loteria (Mexican Bingo) night to try and raise money for the center. With donations from local businesses, the night was a success as families and friends gathered together for a good cause. In a culture where the population is quickly going into one that is majorly mixed, Casa de Los Niños sets themselves apart from the rest because of their multi-cultured atmosphere. “It’s good for kids who don’t speak Eng-

Cada año el 15 de octubre la Liga de Ciudadanos Latinoamericanos Unidos, Consejo 10, honra a todos los estadounidenses que han servido en las Fuerzas Armadas de Estados Unidos con una ceremonia colocando 7 coronas de flores en el río Mississippi en honor a cada rama de las fuerzas armadas William Albracht de Moline, un 3 veces destinatario de la medalla Silver Star y veterano de Vietnam, también habló en la celebración sobre el 50 Aniversario de la Guerra de Vietnam. LULAC closes National Hispanic Heritage Month with special ceremony Colonel James W. Baker, Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, U.S. Army Sustainment Command at Rock Island Arsenal was the keynote speaker at the LULAC Davenport Closing Ceremony of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Every year on October 15 the League of United Latin American Citizens, Council 10, honors all Americans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces with a ceremony by laying 7 floral wreaths in the Mississippi River honoring each branch of the military. William Albracht of Moline, a 3 time Silver Star recipient and having served in Vietnam, also spoke in observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Vietnam War. The Mexican American Veterans Association (MAVA); Vietnam Veterans Chap-

ter 299; Rock Island American Legion Post 200; and, the Quad Cities Area Patriot Riders also participated. This is the 5th year that LULAC members have made the floral wreaths for the Closing Ceremony. After the ceremony at the LULAC Center, 8 new names were added to its LULAC Veterans Memorial Wall. Celebrando El Día de los Muertos Por Jesús Pastor

Noviembre es el mes de Las Catrinas y de Las Calaveras de Azúcar, es tradición que se viste del amarillo de las flores de Cempasúchil, es tiempo que huele a copal y sabe a tamales, a Pan de Muerto, a Calabaza en Tacha, a Atole de Piloncillo y de Maíz Azul, es tradición que nos identifica con lo que es nuestro y cercano, mantiene vivo el recuerdo de los que queremos y ya han bajado a Mictlan, o si se quiere, han emprendido su viaje por las estrellas. Es celebración que une remotos cultos prehispánicos, con elementos religiosos católicos traídos por los españoles durante la conquista. En la actualidad, esta celebración se lleva acabo casi en todo México con algunas variantes de acuerdo al lugar de que se trate, caracterizándose cada una de ellas por los elementos que la conforman. Son famosas las ofrendas de Janitzio, Tzintzuntzán, Mixquic, Mitla, Xochimilco y Papantla, entre otras. En algunos pueblos de Guanajuato y Michoacán las ofrendas que se colocan en los altares de los “Angelitos”; es decir,

de aquellos que murieron siendo aun niños, consiste básicamente en calaveras, borregos, gallinas, canastas de fruta y otras figuras que los artesanos elaboran con pasta de azúcar, grenetina o Chautle y jugo de limón que se conocen con el nombre de Alfeñiques. También se colocan calaveras, mascaras y catrinas de cartón, papel picado, comida y juguetes, tal es el caso del Municipio de Cortazar, antiguo asentamiento Otomí cuyo nombre fue Degno-Yahhiú, que significa “Lugar de Amoles.” Se localiza al pie del cerro de Culiacán a las orillas del Rió Laja al sur del Estado de Guanajuato. Elementos de una ofrenda tradicional: FLORES DE CEMPASÚCHIL: Van del amarillo al naranja encendido, se utilizan para marcarles el “Camino” a las ánimas. A los “Angelitos” se les colocan flores de “Nube.” VELAS: La luz alumbra el sitio donde esta puesta la ofrenda, señalando el lugar exacto donde los esperan sus seres queridos. PAN DE MUERTO: Simboliza la resurrección. AGUA: Se coloca un vaso o jarro de

barro para que el difunto calme su sed después de un largo viaje. También se utiliza como elemento purificador. SAL: La sal es un elemento que simboliza la vida eterna, pues evita la descomposición de la carne. PAPEL PICADO: Adorna con su colorido. CALAVERAS DE AZÚCAR: Se colocan generalmente en los altares de “Los Angelitos” porque es sabido el gusto de los niños por los dulces, también se acostumbra a regalar a los amigos y familiares, calaveras con su nombre en la frente. CLAVERAS Y ESQUELETOS DE CARTÓN: Se colocan en los altares con vestidos que recrean a los que uso en vida el difunto como homenaje a su memoria. INCIENSO DE COPAL: Se utiliza para purificar de malas energías. En el altar también se colocan objetos personales, una fotografía del difunto y algunas cosas que le gustaban como tequila o cigarrillos, cruces e imágenes religiosas. mantener viva la memoria de quienes nos quisieron y han partido. Puedes hacerlo colocando una ofrenda sencilla, en el lugar donde vives, y aprendiéndote estos versos: Verso 1: Los niños en procesión de muertitos con garbanzo, gozaran la diversión de los versos que les lanzo. Verso 2: Estaba la media muerte sentada en un taburete, los muchachos de traviesos, le tumbaron el bonete. Verso 3: Al pasar por el panteón, me espanto una calavera: tú me tocas el tambor y yo muevo la cadera. O bien, pide a tus tíos y padrinos que cooperen para la ofrenda de la siguiente manera: Versos para pedir calavera: Verso 1: Denme mi calaverita, échela en esta alcancía que la ofrenda no esta puesta y la bolsa esta vacía. Verso 2: Esta calaca esta flaca y te pide de comer, con tres pesitos de plata, socórrela no hay que ser. —A. Granados. No se te olvide que el Día de Muertos, es un día para celebrar la vida.

Cuando el estaba creciendo y buscando su camino en la vida, Edwin Salazar nunca se imaginaba que iba a llegar a su destino actual. En vez de colegio, trabajo era lo que le esperaba para el futuro después de graduación de la preparatoria, creía el. “Afortunadamente,” el graduado de Moline del 2013 comento, “vino una oportunidad. Tome ventaja de ella.” El futbol le presentó una oportunidad para ir al colegio. Lo motivó a hacer lo mejor de esta oportunidad, y en mayo él se graduó con un titulo técnico del Colegio Lincoln. Salazar usó esto para seguir con su carrera académica y su carrera atlética en McKendree. Mirándolo de cualquier aspecto, él es exitoso. “Me siento orgulloso de mi mismo,” Salazar dijo. Hay razones para sentirse orgulloso. Admitiendo que a él “no le importaban mucho” sus calificaciones en la preparatoria, y su promedio escolar lo reflejaba. Todo este tiempo el enfoque de Salazar era el futbol, pero él nunca tan si quiera pensaba que el deporte lo iba a llevar al colegio. Cuando él creció, le cambió su punto de vista. Mirar a su mama preocuparse por la falta de dinero, lo hizo re evaluar sus pensamientos sobre la educación. “Mi mama siempre me dijo que la escuela es importante,” Salazar dijo. “Al principio no pude creerlo. Pero ahora yo sé. La educación te lleva lejos en la vida.” Salazar tomó la oportunidad de jugar futbol en Colegio Lincoln por dos temporadas. Él mejoró su juego en el campo y esto le dio la oportunidad de unirse al programa de Division II. Salazar escogió McKendree, miembro de Conferencia de Great Lakes Valley en Lebanon. Antes de llegar a la escuela en St. Louis, él obtuvo su título técnico. En el Colegio Lincoln su promedio escolar llegó a 3,0. “Quería seguir estudiando,” Salazar dijo. Deportes le dieron la oportunidad. En el

aula él tuvo éxito. También en el campo de futbol. Esta temporada Salazar fue uno de 11 jugadores que jugó en 13 partidos con los Bearcats. Este mediocampista, estudiante universitario del tercer año, tuvo cinco intentos y metió tres goles. Casi todos los partidos (excepto dos) de McKendree de esta temporada se ganaron por la diferencia de un gol. “Estoy mejorando y aprendiendo cosas nuevas,” Salazar dijo. “Estoy aprendiendo a controlar la pelota y moverla. Estoy aprendiendo a hacer cosas pequeñas de la manera correcta.” Cinco de ocho partidos previos contaron con Salazar como el jugador titular. “La competición esta a otro nivel en comparación con Lincoln y Moline, pero me encanta,” Salazar dijo. “Soy una persona competitiva.” El fuego arde en la vida académica también. Cualquier momento cuando no hay prácticas o juegos de futbol, él estudia. Salazar dijo que él vive en la biblioteca. Durante la semana él pasa la mayoría de su tiempo allí o “desde las 6 hasta la medianoche.” Él busca graduarse con licenciatura en justicia criminal y psicología. Después de graduarse él planea seguir estudiando para la maestría. Su meta final es ser oficial de libertad condicional. “Soy el primero en mi familia en salir de la casa para ir al colegio,” Salazar dijo. “Para llegar lejos, tienes que educarte… Solo porque creciste sin nada no tiene que decir que tú vas a ser nadie. Quiero ser alguien.” Salazar piensa sobre la gente que le ayudó a llegar donde él está ahora – su madre, hermanos, entrenadores y la maestra de Moline Wendy Pilichowski – y él entiende que todos le dieron la dirección para ir al colegio. Moline grad Salazar finding his way at McKendree

When he was growing up and trying to find his path in life, Edwin Salazar never envisioned reaching his current destination. Work, not college, is what he thought it would be after graduating from high school. “Luckily,” the 2013 Moline graduate said, “an opportunity came. I took advantage.” Soccer presented Salazar with an avenue to college. Motivated to make the most of his shot, he earned an associate’s degree from Lincoln College in May. Salazar parlayed that into continuing both his academic and athletic careers at McKendree. In each aspect, he is thriving. “I’m pretty proud of myself,” Salazar said. There is reason to hold his head high. Admitting he “didn’t care much” about his grades in high school, the grade-point average reflected that. Salazar’s focus remained on soccer throughout this time, never fully grasping the sport could continue his education. As he got older, the perspective change. Seeing his mom struggle with money forced him to re-evaluate his thoughts on education. “My mom always told me school was important,” Salazar said. “At first, I didn’t believe it. Now I know it. Education takes you far in life.” Given a shot to play at Lincoln College for two seasons, Salazar seized the moment. His play on the field improved, providing him the chance to join a Division II program. Salazar chose McKendree, a Great Lakes Valley Conference member in Lebanon. On his way to reaching the suburban St. Louis school, he also earned his associate’s degree. The grade-point average at Lincoln reached the 3.0 threshold. “I wanted to continue my education,” Salazar said.

Athletics provided that chance. In the classroom, he is excelling. On the pitch, he is finding a groove. Salazar is one of 11 players who has appeared in all 13 matches for the Bearcats this season. The junior midfielder has made five starts and tallied three shots. All but two of McKendree’s matches this season have been decided by one goal. “I’m getting better and learning new things,” Salazar said. “I’m learning how to control the ball and move it. I’m learning how to do the little things right.” Five out of the previous eight matches featured Salazar in the starting lineup. “The competition is a whole different level from Lincoln and Moline, but I love it,” Salazar said. “I’m competitive.”

The fire is evident on the academic side, too. Any time spent away from soccer is geared toward his studies. Salazar said he lives in the library, being “there from 6 to midnight” during the week. All his effort is put to completing his criminal justice degree with a minor in physiology. Upon graduation, he may complete his master’s degree. The goal is becoming a probation officer. “I’m one of the first ones in my family to leave home and go to college,” Salazar said. “To go far, you have to get an education. ... Just because you grow up with nothing doesn’t mean you’ll be nothing. I want to be something.” Salazar thinks about the people who

put him in this place -- his mother, siblings, coaches and Moline teacher Wendy Pilichowski -- and realizes everyone gave him direction to reach college. He does not want to let them down. Celebrating the Day of the Dead By Jesus Pastor

November is the month of the Catrinas and Sugar Skulls, the traditional decorations with the eye-catching yellow colored Cempasúchil flowers, the time where the scent of Copal fills the air along with the taste of Tamales, Pan de Muerto, sliced pumpkin, sweet corn gruel and purple corn. It’s the tradition that identifies what’s close to us and what’s ours, keeping the memories of our loved ones who’ve gone to Mictlan, or if desired, they’ve taken their journey to the stars. It’s a celebration that unites distant pre-Hispanic cults, with religious catholic elements brought from Spain during the conquest. Nowadays, this celebration takes place in almost every part of Mexico with some variations, depending on each region characterizing themselves with the elements of this festivity. Some of the most famous offerings come from Janitzio, Tzintzuntzan, Mixquic, Mitla, Xochimilco and Papantla, among others. In some villages in the Mexican states of Guanajuato and Michoacán the offerings that are placed on the altars of “Little Angels”; as they are known for those who passed away as children, basically consist of skulls, sheep, chickens, fruit baskets and other figurines made by craftsmen that are made of sugar dough, gelatin, and lemon juice, better known as Alfeñiques. Other things that are placed on altars include masks and carton Catrinas (skeleton), paper cutouts, food and toys, as it is accustomed in the village of Cortazar, former Otomí settlement who’s name used to be Degno-Yahhiu, which means place of Amoles, which comes from the Nahuatl word amolli which is a sort of tuber used by the Aztecs as a detergent, and that can be found in this region. It is located at the bottom of the Culiacán hill on the banks of Laja River located south of the State of Guanajuato. Traditional Offering Elements:

Cempasuchil Flowers (Orange Marigold): they come in yellow and fade into orange and are used to set a “path” for souls. “Flores de Nube” are used on the altars of “Angels” or little children. Candles: the candles light up the altar, showing the exact location of where the deceased’s loved ones await for them. “Pan de Muerto” or “Bread of the Dead”: symbolizes resurrection. Water: it is placed in a cup or clay jar so that the soul of the loved one can cool their thirst after such a long journey. It is also used as a purifying element. Salt: it is an element that symbolizes eternal life, since it prevents the decomposition of flesh. Paper Cutouts: used for decoration because of its bright colors. Sugar Skulls: they are generally placed on the altars of “Little Angels” or children, because it is known that children enjoy candy, also, it is a custom to hand out sugar skulls to family and friends with their names on it. Carton Skulls and Skeletons: they are placed on the altars dressed like the deceased person would dress as a tribute to their memory. Incense: used to purify bad energy. Personal belongings are also placed on the altar; along with pictures of the deceased and things the departed enjoyed, such as tequila or cigars, crucifixes or religious images. You can do so by placing a simple offering in your own home and not forgetting that Day of the Dead is a day to celebrate life.

El Club de Boxeo Alley Cats prepara show de amateurs Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Hace 18 años Jeff Pérez empezó a entrenar boxeadores en su garaje. Ahora el está en un edificio nuevo, donado por Armando Calderón de Calderón Construction, con buen equipo donde él entrena muchos jóvenes boxeadores. Aunque el Sr. Pérez está considerando la idea de retirarse en dos años y después de que él encuentre un reemplazo adecuado, pero antes de que esto pase él quiere invitar a toda la comunidad a apoyar a sus boxeadores en el evento de recaudación de fondos anual que será 7 de noviembre en el 4700 Black Hawk Road en Rock Island. Las puertas se abren a las 5 PM y las peleas empiezan a las 6 PM. Los boletos cuestan $7 antes del evento y $10 en la puerta. Este será su evento de recaudación de fondos numero 16. El Sr. Pérez asegura que será un evento maravilloso con participación de campeones nacionales de Nebraska, Michigan, Indianapolis y St. Louis. Habrá comida y bebidas y una rifa de 50/50. El dinero recaudado será usado para cubrir los gastos de viajes de sus boxeadores. Ramos es un estudiante del sexto grado de la escuela secundaria John Deere, pero a su corta edad él ya es ganador de titulo de torneo nacional de 95 libras en que este año participo en Hot Springs, Arizona. Claro Ramos es simplemente un niño de 11 años, pero a lo largo de los años el Sr. Pérez entrenó muchos boxeadores que ahora son padres de sus propias familias y él espera que ellos puedas salir a apoyar la nueva generación. “Todos los muchachos que boxeaban antes, quisiera verlos en el evento apoyando a los boxeadores jóvenes,” el Sr. Pérez compartió su deseo con nosotros. Alley Cats Boxing Club hosts Annual Amateur Show By Anastassia Zvoryguina Eighteen years ago Jeff Perez started to train boxers in his garage. Fast forward and now he is in a nice building, donated by Armando Calderon from Calderon Construction, with good equipment where he trains many young talented boxers. Even though Mr. Perez is contemplating the idea of retiring in about two years and after he finds a suitable replacement, but before that happens he wants to invite the community to support his boxers by coming to their annual fundraiser on November 7 at 4700 Black Hawk Rd., in Rock Island. The doors will open at 5 PM and the fights will start at 6 PM. The tickets cost $7 at advance and $10 at the door. This is going to be 16th year for this fundraiser. Mr. Perez assures that this is going to be a great event with National champions from Nebraska, Michigan, Indianapolis and St. Louis. There will be food and drinks and a 50/50 raffle. The money collected from this event will be used for covering travel expenses of his boxers. Mr. Perez invites everyone to come enjoy a great show and support young boxers. “There is more action in our kids fights than professional fights on pay per view,” Mr. Perez laughs. He also says that sometimes people tend to assume that boxing might be a little too violent for everyone in the family, but

he assures that this even is very family oriented. “They put a good show,” Mr. Perez talks about his young fighters. When talking about good fighters, Mr. Perez finds himself sharing the victory of one of his young boxers Erick Ramos. Ramos might be just a 6th grader in John Deere Middle School, but at his young age he is already a winner of a National title tournament that took place in Hot Springs, Arizona in June of this year. Ramos might be just 11 years old boy, but over the years Perez had many boxers who now are fathers themselves and he hopes that they all can come and support the younger generation. “All the boxers who used to box I wish they would come out to support younger fights, “Mr. Perez shares his wish with us. Jeff Perez might be thinking about retirement, but that does not mean that this year’s fundraiser and show will be any less entertaining than the ones from previous year. Entrevista exclusiva con Frank Klipsch Candidato a Alcalde de Davenport ¿Señor Klipsch cuéntenos un poco acerca de usted? Tenemos 45 años casados mi esposa y yo. Tenemos cuatro hijos y diez nietos. Mi hijo mayor, Frank, tiene dos hijos y él trabaja en comunicaciones con el YMCA de Davenport, mi segundo hijo tiene dos hijos y una niña que él y su esposa adoptaron de Etiopia, África. Él es el director de Mid City High School, una escuela alternativa en Davenport. Mi tercer hijo y su esposa tienen un niño y una niña y ellos adoptaron tres niñitos de Etiopia. Antes él manejó el campamiento de YMCA y ahora él es el vicepresidente de programas y campamientos de YMCA para jóvenes en el extranjero. Mi hija es trabajadora social en Brooklyn, Nueva York. Ella estudió un año en Chile y ella pasó nueve meses allí. Ella tiene doble licenciatura en trabajo social y español. Somos una familia diversa. Esto nos hace todavía más sensibles. Cuando la gente empieza hablar sobre “esa gente” eso me molesta porque nosotros somos “esa gente”. ¿Cual fue su motivación para postularse a alcalde de Davenport? Como lo puede ver en la tarjeta de promoción de mi campaña hay un logotipo encima de mi nombre, hay un puente y estrellas sobre ella. Las diez estrellas representan mis nietos y el puente significa unir a todas las personas. Observé que estaba pasando, principalmente en Davenport, pero también en todo el país, y en vez de unir personas, hay mucha división. En vez de ver como dividimos y como uno es diferente y equivocado, debemos de unirnos y buscar las maneras de hacer cosas positivas. Yo creo que es importante que no solo hablemos de los valores, pero debemos de demostrarlos. Uno no habla de liderazgo, uno demuestra ser líder. Y yo estuve en la posición de líder desde hace mucho tiempo, toda mi vida con el YMCA uniendo la gente. Mi filosofía y mi tipo de liderazgo Mucha gente me han dicho que no iba a poder desarrollar esos nuevos YMCA

con las escuelas, hospital y con la ciudad de Maquoketa, pero lo hemos logrado. Las hemos construido. Hemos construido dos YMCA con las preparatorias de Davenport North y West, una en Bettendorf con Genesis Health y hemos construida otra YMCA con Maquoketa y ahora estas están abiertas a toda la comunidad. Ninguna de estos proyectos hubiera sido posible si nosotros no nos hubiéramos unido para completarlos. Mi filosofía es que queremos desarrollar programas e instalaciones donde puede participar la gente de recursos financieros, pero también hay que asegurar que la gente que no puede pagar tenga acceso también. Creo que esto es importante porque cuando empiezas a desarrollar programas para la gente pobre, ya estas discriminando, pero si desarrollas programas para toda la gente y aseguras que todos tienen el mismo acceso; entonces esto es de que se trata todo, eso es todo. Tengo un estilo de liderazgo diferente, es un liderazgo inclusivo que une a la gente. Yo no subo mi voz. Yo no grito a la gente. Para mi es el hecho de traer la gente a la misma mesa para compartir nuestras creencias y planificar nuestro futuro. Hemos hecho algunas actividades [en la ciudad] y ahora como podemos traer a la misma mesa las personas de ambos partes de la comunidad, de diferentes niveles de ingresos pero sin que uno grupo diga lo que necesita hacer el otro grupo o que ellos deben de hacer. Vamos a reunirnos y buscaremos la solución y esto es lo que trato de hacer yo. Es importante para mí. Creo que es una oportunidad de perspectiva nueva basada en este tipo de liderazgo. Inclusión vs. Diversidad Una vez fue a una conferencia y escuché hablar una señora, ella es miembro de un movimiento popular que está pasando ahora. Por lo regular la gente habla de la fusión de culturas y ella, quien es maestra que viene de México y ahora está en Maquoketa y ella dijo en vez de verlo como fusión de culturas debemos de verlo como una ensalada de frutas, al agregar cosas y unirse creamos una ambiente. Y nunca he oído a nadie hablar de esto jamás. Y la

inclusión es el asunto, no es el hecho de hacer que la gente pierda su cultura, pero incluirlos a ellos y su cultura y así hacer nuestra cultura más rica. Por ejemplo mis cuatro nietos de Etiopia, mis nueras aprendieron a cocinar la comida de Etiopia y toda la familia celebra días festivos de Etiopia. Creemos que es importante para que ellos entiendan que ellos traen una riqueza cultural a nuestra familia igual a los hispanos. La población hispana trae riqueza a esta cultura y yo creo que esto es inclusión. Pero si decimos que, ya les dejamos entrar, esto no es inclusión. Es diversidad, pero no es inclusión. ¿Cuales son las dificultades que enfrenta la ciudad de Davenport hoy en día? Por eejemplo, si un niño que va a la escuela de una familia que tiene tantos problemas que están a punto de perder todo y quedarse en la calle, o una familia que tiene que decidir entre el pago de factura de electricidad o la compra de medicina o comida, entonces nosotros tenemos la obligación moral para ayudar a esta familia. No es el hecho de darles las cosas, es el hecho de ser parte de la solución. Y por eso hay que crear más trabajos y dar las oportunidades a la gente para obtener esos trabajos. Trabajos de buena paga, pero no se necesitan trabajos mal pagados. Lo hacemos atrayendo mas negocios a nuestra región de los Quad Cities, así habrá más desarrollo y oportunidades para hacerlo. Entonces el desarrollo económico es extremamente importante. La infraestructura de nuestras ciudades es también importante. Las calles y alcantarillas necesitan nuestra atención y no solamente durante la temporada de elecciones, pero necesitamos un plan con un sistema de paso a paso que va a mejorar nuestra infraestructura. Después comunicamos el plan a la comunidad. Este es nuestro proyecto más importante y vamos a trabajarlo y seguir el plan y creo que la gente es justa, ellos entienden que si yo vengo contigo y te digo aquí está la lista y aquí está mi proyecto, entonces ellos van a estar de acuerdo, siempre y cuando comuniquemos y sigamos el plan. Parece que el hecho de donde vive

uno y a quien conoce es que hace que las calles se mejoren y los servicios son más rápidos y esto es lo que causa problemas. Entonces nosotros presentamos el plan, lo comunicamos a la gente porque esas calles como Rockingham y Utica Ridge necesitan nuestra atención de ambos lados de la ciudad. Todos deben de estar incluidos. Yo creo que los asuntos más importantes son desarrollo económico, infraestructura y creación de trabajos. Todos asuntos son importantes pero esto se convierte en parte del proceso que crea trabajos y en su turno esto crea mejor educación. Todo esto esta entrelazado en este proceso, debemos de apoyar a nuestras escuelas porque queremos que nuestros niños estén preparados para tomar esos trabajos que hemos creado. Todos debemos de hacer. Todo esto es parte de una sola tela de nuestra comunidad. Cultura diversa enriquece nuestra comunidad Mi esposa y yo tenemos casi 50 años viviendo aquí, la gente nos dice “ustedes deben de mudarse” y nosotros contestamos que no. Hemos construido nuestra casa en la parte oeste de Davenport y decidimos que quisimos que nuestros hijos vayan a la preparatoria West. La diversidad cultural es el factor que nos enriquece a nosotros. Nuestra familia es de pensar más amplio, tenemos pensamientos globales o de inclusión porque entendemos que esto agrega a nuestra cultura. La celebramos y no damos excusas. Está bien porque la cultura diversa que tenemos, las culturas diversas, enriquecen a la comunidad. Necesitamos aceptarlo e invitarlos a ser incluidos. Exclusive interview with Candidate for Mayor of Davenport Frank Klipsch Mr. Klipsch please tell us a little bit about yourself. My wife and I had been married for 45 years. We have four kids. We have ten grandkids. My oldest son, Frank, has two boys, and he does all the communications for the YMCA in Davenport; my second son had two boys and adopted a little girl from Ethiopia, Africa. He is a principal of Mid City High School and alternative school in Davenport. And the one in the middle he and he and his wife had a boy and a girl and adopted three little boys from Ethiopia. He used to run the YMCA camp and now he is a vice president of overseas youth programming and their camp. And my daughter is master licensed social worker in Brooklyn New York. She studied her junior year in Chile and spent nine months there and she has a degree in Spanish and a degree in Social Work. My family and they are all , my kids and my daughters in law as well, they are all involved with giving professions. They are teachers, they work in the Y, they are social workers, and one is a physician’s assistan.We are a very diverse family. It makes us much more sensitive, I get much more sensitive when people start talking about those people because we are those people. What motivated you to run for Mayor of Davenport? You notice on my campaign post card, my logo on top above my name, there is a bridge with stars above it, the ten stars are my grandkids and the bridge is for bringing people together. I observed what has been going on, predominantly in Davenport, but across the country as well, instead of bringing people together. there’s much division, Instead of seeing how we can divide and seeing how one is wrong and different, let’s get together and find out how can we all do something positively. And I think it is important that we don’t talk about values, we demonstrate them. You don’t talk about leadership, you demonstrate leadership. And I have been in leadership for so long, with the YMCA all my life, bringing people together.

My philosophy and my leadership type Many people originally said you are not going to be able to develop all these new Y’s with the schools, with the hospital and with the city of Maquoketa and we did. We got all those built. So we built it, two YMCA’s in High Schools in Davenport North and West, in Bettendorf with Genesis Health and we built the Y with Maquoketa that are now opened to the whole community. Neither one of the entities could have done this along, but by coming together we got it completed. My whole philosophy is we want to develop programs, facilities that the people that have financial means can participate and will join, but make sure that person that can’t afford it can have an equal access to it. I think that’s important because once you start developing programs for poor people, you already discriminating, but if you develop programs for all people and make sure everybody have an equal access; that’s what this is about, and that’s it. I have a different leadership style, it is inclusive leadership style that brings people together. I do not raise my voice. I do not yell at people. It is a matter of how to get people to the table find out what we believe in and plan for the future. We’ve done these pockets of [in the city] and how do we get people from both sides of the community, both income groups at the same table and not have one try tell to the other one what they need, what they should be doing. Let’s all get together and find the solution and that what I try to do. It is important to me. I think it’s an opportunity for new perspective based on this type of leadership. Inclusiveness vs. Diversity. Once there was a lady at conference I attended, a member of this popular big push that is going on and the conversation is always the melting pot and she is the teacher, she comes from Mexico and she is in Maquoketa and she said we should not look at it as melting pot, but it should be a fruit salad, add good things and come together to create an environment. And I never heard anybody, never

ever touch on this again. And this inclusiveness is really an issue, it’s the matter of you don’t try people to have them lose their culture, but you bring it in and include that culture to a greater richer culture because for my four Ethiopian grandchildren that I have, my daughters in law have learned how to cook Ethiopian food, we celebrate Ethiopian holidays. We think that’s important, so they understand they bring to our family the richness of culture just like Hispanic population enriches this culture and I think this inclusiveness. As oppose to, or we let them come in, but this is not inclusiveness. That’s diversity, but it is not inclusiveness. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing the City of Davenport today? If there is ever one child that goes to school from a family that is in a problem of being on the street or the family who has to decide do I pay my electric bill, do I buy medicine, or do I buy food, we’ve got a moral obligation to step up and help. It is not the matter of giving things, it is the matter of being part of solution. And that is we got to create more jobs and give people an opportunity to have those jobs. Good paying jobs, not working poor kind of jobs, but good positive jobs. We do that by attracting more businesses into our Quad City region, so there is more development and opportunities to do that. So I see that economic development as extremely important. Infrastructure of our cities is important as well. Streets and sewers need to be dealt with not just around election time, but we need a plan that clearly lays out step by step system that is going to take care of all the infrastructure needs. Then we communicate to the community and say, here is the plan. This is our top project and we going to work down this list and I think people are fair, they understand that if I come to you and say here is the list and here is where my project fits and I am OK with that, as long as we communicate and stay on that path. It seems like where you live and who

you know and you end up getting better streets and quicker services, that’s there what people have a problem with. So we lay it out, communicate it to the public. We have to do it we got to give as much attention to Rockingham Rd as we do Utica Ridge. Both of these streets are need to be dealt with on both ends of the community. Everybody has to be included. So I think those major issues: economic development, infrastructure and job creation. All issues are important but it becomes a part of the process that creates jobs, that creates better education. All of these have to be intertwined in this process we need to support our schools, because we want our kids able to be in a position to take jobs as they are created. We all have to be… all becomes part of the interwoven of the fabric or the cloth of our community. Diverse culture is enrichment for our community We, my wife and I, have lived about 50 years here, and people say you need to move and we say no, we built our home on the West side of Davenport and we decided we wanted our kids to stay at west High School. That cultural diversity is an enriching factor for us. Our family is broader thinking, more globally minded or inclusive because we all understand that it adds to our culture. We celebrate it and not make excuses. Its Ok because the diverse culture that we were in, the diverse cultures, enriches our community. We need to embrace that at to be inclusive.There are a lot of people and lets come to the City Hall and let’s have a discussion. It is uncomfortable and I think we need to go somewhere people feel comfortable. But we can’t have one side say, I know what they are thinking, here is what they said and the other say, and I know what they are thinking. We need to learn to get to know each other and that is there the learning happens. That’s how we build relationships, when we get people together.
