“The Quad Cities is very important to me and I wanted to meet new leaders who have the same passion for the region as I do,” said Amy Simler, Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Bush Construction.
“I think of this program as almost as a partnership-build ing organization. I now know a lot of people that I can work with, and they are our region’s future leaders. Build ing these relationships now will only help the efforts that we all will get involved in as we move forward,” she said.
Leadership QC is a program anchored in corporate so cial responsibility and when we launched it eight months ago, we challenged 23 business, nonprofit and community leaders to approach the region’s most pressing issues in a comprehensive and collaborative manner. The group heard from a variety of government and nonprofit organizations, learning more about the QC as well as strengthening their leadership skills. This is the path to advancing and grow ing our region, and many participants arrived at the first session in January already dedicated to that mission.
This month let’s celebrate all those who crossed all the ob stacles and limits to show us that with a desire to reach a dream and hard work anything is possible. Let’s celebrate the Hispanic heritage that has a lot of flavor and color to it. Let’s celebrate our people and ourselves.
This official celebration of Hispanic Culture started in 1968 when then president of The United States Lyndon B. John son proclaimed one week of September as Hispanic Week. In 1988 the week turned into a month. Every year the president of the United States proclaims the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month and he invites everyone to participate in this celebration of Hispanic Heritage and the achievements of Hispanics in the U.S.

The city landmark nomination says that the station “pos sesses historical integrity of facade design, showcasing craftsmanship of the 1930s and because of its location, will serve as a significant contributor to Moline local land mark destinations.”
Deere Seeding Group employees, during a temporary shutdown, helped paint and renovate the station itself. “It really started snowballing, and people were more supportive than I ever imagined,” Vallejo said.

Vallejo found an old Skelly gas pump from 1952 in Peo ria, which stands outside. It reads the price of gas at 46 cents per gallon. “Having the old pump out there, it’s go ing to attract a lot of old car enthusiasts,” he said, of which he is one.
The friendly 67-year-old, a longtime resident of the Flo reciente neighborhood, got to see his father honored last month as part of the historic trolley tours that stopped at the former Skelly Service Station, 820 5th Ave. Felix and his wife Mary bought the property in 2018, and have lived across the street for over 40 years (where he still is at 501 8thHe’dSt.).known it as a depressed building, used for storage for the former owners’ rental properties, and was vacant all the time the Vallejos lived across the street.
Renovations included adding stucco to reinforce the ex terior, a new roof, repainting the red highlights, putting Skelly logos outside, and a total overhaul to the former service shop inside, which now has the stylish flair of a ret ro coffee shop, with Skelly and antique car memorabilia. The Purington bricks (from Galesburg) were restored and re-laid on the inside floor.

“I remember it being an antique store,” Vallejo said. “It was a lot of work.”
The popular Tudor residential look of the building was “naturally translated into gas stations designed to blend in with the surrounding neighborhoods,” the nomination said.The station helped to create dominant American driving culture and the property “is one of the few remaining gas stations portraying design aesthetics from the high style age of service stations,” the nomination says.

“Seeing how historic gas stations were a big part of the highway and transportation industry, we felt it had to be preserved,” Vallejo said. “You will notice oil companies built gas stations like houses, so they would not get push back from neighbors. You can see the comparison to my house.”Theold station sits near the Butterworth and DeereWiman mansions (on 8th Street and 11th Avenue) and it “most likely served those titans of industry which, as we know, shaped Moline,” said the nomination for city land mark designation.

With the help of many volunteers and organizations — including the John Deere Foundation and Habitat for Hu manity — the Vallejo family completed a major renovation of the station (inside and out) over the past four years. Part of the renovations were to install heating, air condition ing, electricity, and plumbing. New lighting fixtures were added inside, including a ceiling fan with lights.

Because of the difficulty patrons had in accessing the station off 38th Street, he had plans for expansion to the east, but they did not come to fruition.
On Christmas Eve 1944, while sailing between Southamp ton and Cherbourg, the Leopoldville was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-486, killing nearly 800 U.S. soldiers. There is a display inside the Skelly station honoring the service of Mac and his brother Pete Vallejo, who died of malaria in 1942 in the Panama Canal.

It’s the first city landmark in the mostly Hispanic Flore ciente neighborhood, Vallejo said. “There are a lot of nicer buildings, that started Moline,” he said Skelly Oil’s roots go back to 1919. In 1977, Skelly Oil merged into Getty Oil and the Skelly stations and products were rebranded with the Getty brand, which subsequently was rebranded to Texaco by Texaco’s takeover of Getty in 1984.TheSkelly brand logo re-emerged in 2012 when NimmonsJoliet Development Corp. acquired the nationally recognized Skelly logo.
Tudor Revival residential structures were popular through out the 1930s, so it is to be expected that popular residential designs would be translated to small commercial enterpris es. Tudor Revival design was a corporate brand for Skelly, as variations of this style were found as service stations throughout the country.
The station was recommended to become a city landmark in June by the Moline Historic Preservation Commission, and Felix plans to apply for the National Register of Historic Places.Vallejo said if he’s home, he’d be more than happy to let people into the station for a tour. It doesn’t have regular hours for the public. The flowers and concrete out front are new, and those involved held a ceremony Aug. 20, 2022 to celebrate the station becoming a landmark.
The local Skelly franchise was opened in 1945 by Sam P. Christopher. It was purchased by 1949 by Earl Showalter.

That was a total surprise, Long said Monday, since Wood worth has not lived in the area since his 1951 graduation from United Township High School. Former Mayor Bill Ward is a longtime friend and a huge library supporter, Long said.
Woodworth got a caddy scholarship from Short Hills and went to Northwestern, majoring in accounting and busi ness. He first joined an accounting firm in Cleveland and became very successful, Ward said. When Woodworth was in East Moline, he had three homes — his residence, Short Hills and the public library, the former mayor said.
He was Ward’s first boss at Short Hills, and still donates “hundreds of thousands of dollars” to the Chick Evans Caddy Scholarship Fund at Short Hills, Ward said.
Bill Ward, now 88, was high school classmates with Woodworth, and they were caddies together at Short Hills Country Club.
Ward was on the library fundraising committee.
“This is a beautiful facility; it’s gorgeous,” he said of the renovated building. “It’s one of the best in the Quad Cities. It’s a place to come to, relax.”
“He connected us with Mr. Woodworth and that was very exciting,” she said. “We couldn’t have done it without his help.”“Hejust has really fond memories of growing up in East Moline and coming here,” Long said of the former library.
TBK Bank replaced its old downtown location, with a new $1.5-million bank just next door, at 717 16th Ave., East Moline.

“It’s a connection for downtown. I’d like to see more small businesses established here,” he said. “I hope East Moline becomes a destination point. We have a lot to offer — we’re a blue-collar community and we always will be. But we also need people to come see us, come visit us.”

Illinois State Rep. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island) has kids ages 8 and 10, and even in this digital age of screens, his family values libraries and reading.
“It’s working at all levels of government and with the community, to put important public projects together like this,” Halpin said. “I’m glad the state of Illinois could be part of that and this community has something very much to be proud of in the years going forward.”
“The community’s generosity has been overwhelming,” Long (director of the library for seven years) said. “This is a true holistic endeavor, with support from the state, city, foundations, and most importantly our local philanthro pists.”“Ihope
Long also was instrumental for realizing the building plans, dealing with all the contractors on a daily basis, he said. “The board had a lot of say in it, but let’s face it, she was the one day to day swinging the bat, making people toe the line,” he said.
Hoffman noted four board members passed away during the long process.

East Moline celebrates opening of new public library
It’s also important to restore and re-use a key building downtown, which went through many bank iterations, Ward said.
For the project — getting a new library downtown, planned since 2009 — the retired accountant and East Mo line native Woodworth gave $1.4 million.
“He had nothing. The family had nothing,” Ward re called. “They lived on 15th Avenue and 10th Street, East Moline, above a business.”
“It takes a village to do anything, especially when you’ve got a big public works project like this,” he said, also cred iting the library staff and Friends of the East Moline Public Library volunteer group.
Woodworth also invested in two East Moline churches, including Ward’s, in recent years.
Director Laura Long said the renovated bank building (completed at a cost of $7.3 million) opened this past spring, but working with supply-chain issues, they weren’t ready to have a big public ceremony until Monday.
Library board president James Hoffman on Monday thanked many people for the project, including TBK Bank president John DeDoncker, who decided to donate the for mer bank building, “which was the key to our success,” Hoffman said. The two-story building (which was added onto) dates from the 1950s.
“That’s where he spent all his time. He came to the li brary to get warm each night,” Ward said, noting his house was two blocks from the old library.
The East Moline Public Library held a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday September 12 for the new Louis E. Woodworth Public Library, downtown at 740 16th Ave., culminating a 13-year process.
Remembering a generous benefactor
“He’s a very caring individual,” Ward said. “Besides the $1,465,000 he donated to this library, that has his name on the top of the building, he was a short, cocky, determined, a mover and shaker in high school, and he’s still that way today.”
He recommended Woodworth donate to the new library project, though he has no known relatives still in the area. The only times he’s visited were in 2019 and 1979, Ward said.“He’s still probably on another continent tonight,” he said, noting he’s still in regular contact with Woodworth — who still has three literal homes — in Seattle, Palm Springs, Calif., and Paris (“a five-iron away from the Notre Dame Cathedral”).
The new building has more than doubled the square foot age of the previous library building, with almost 22,000 square feet.
‘It takes a village’
The Illinois State Library gave $2 million toward the project, which also raised $3 million in private donations.
“This building is going to allow generations of children to discover that love,” he said Monday. “I’m proud to say the state of Illinois was able to contribute $2.1 million from the state library construction grant program. And that combined with the efforts of the city and all the private do nations, helped make this possible. It’s truly what publicprivate partnerships are about.
The library has not increased its staff and is in the pro cess of expanding its collections, the director said. “The big thing for me is that we have more space for people to meet,” Long said. “We have chairs and tables and study rooms and meeting rooms, and all that wasn’t available at the old building. We’re really excited for the community to come see us.”
“He still remembers everything here and he was a local boy that made good,” Ward said. “He’s donated his heart and his time and his money to East Moline. I appreciate that and I’m sure the community does. He doesn’t ask for any favors.”
The new library should help attract new development downtown, Ward said. “It’s an uptick for downtown East Moline and I think it’s a great accomplishment,” he said.
The East Moline Public Library hosts over 100,000 pa trons per year, and the additions made (including the literal 6,000-square-foot addition to the former 16,000-squarefoot bank) created new space that is expected to increase annual attendance by an additional 25 percent.
