La migración de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe a Davenport, Iowa

Una pintura única de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe está en el Museo de Arte Figge en Davenport. Fue hecha por el artista mexicano An drés de Islas, activo durante los años 1750 hasta 1773, y forma parte del regalo original del museo de C. A. Ficke a la ciudad de Davenport que adquirió en 1901 en la Ciudad de México. Durante el mismo tiempo, a principios de 1900, muchos inmigrantes mexicanos llega ron a Iowa e Illinois escapando de la Revolución Mexicana en busca de una mejor vida para ellos y sus familias y para cubrir la escasez de mano de obra causada por la entrada de los EE.UU. en la Primera Guerra Mundial.

Es una pintura muy importante para descubrir ya que es parte de la Colección Colonial Mexicana en el Figge. La imagen es importante porque ayuda a redescubrir nuestra cultura y crea la sensación de que la virgen acompaña a sus “hijos” e “hijas” en su viaje a un nuevo país.

Muchos inmigrantes Latinos se apoyan en su fe y devoción a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe para superar los retos y dificultades de dejar su país de origen.

La historia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe se refiere a que fue la aparición de la Madre de Dios, la Virgen María a un indígena, Juan Diego. La primera aparición ocurrió el 9 de diciembre de 1531 donde ella le habló en su lengua nativa, el náhuatl, pidiendo que se con struyera una iglesia en el lugar donde se apareció. El obispo local, Fray Juan de Zumárraga, el primer obispo de México, pidió una señal milagrosa como prueba de su aparición.

La pintura representa el momento en que Nuestra Señora le dijo a Juan Diego que recogiera flores en pleno invierno y las colocara en su tilma antes de presentarlas al obispo. Cuando las rosas cayeron, la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe apareció el 12 de diciembre de 1531. Tres días después de su primera aparición a Juan Diego.

La pintura resalta las diferencias entre España y los indígenas de la época. El artista se aseguró de que San Juan Diego tuviera rasgos indígenas, a diferencia de otras pinturas de San Juan Diego pintadas por artistas españoles, que lo representan con fuertes rasgos europeos. Los colores oscuros alrededor de la imagen principal contrastan con los colores mucho más brillantes de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe y se convierten en el punto focal que llama nuestra atención. La ima gen del Obispo también es poderosa, particularmente el ángulo de su mano en la pintura. La corona de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe representa que ella es la reina de todo lo creado. La corona no está en la imagen original de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe pero es un rasgo único de esta pintura.

Lo que hace que la imagen de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sea tan única es que es una mezcla de rasgos españoles e indígenas, most rando un sentido de unidad entre ambas culturas. El artista, Andrés de Islas era conocido por sus imágenes no religiosas de personas, sus pinturas retrataban las diferencias y mezclas raciales del México co lonial.

Mientras nos preparamos para celebrar Nuestra Señora de Guada lupe el 12 de diciembre, elaboramos una lista (en la página 16) de las fiestas en las comunidades de Iowa e Illinois a seguir. Tengan en cuenta que con la actual pandemia todas estas celebraciones están sujetas a cambios.

También les animamos a visitar el Museo de Arte Figge en Daven port para ver la magnífica pintura de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe que fue creada a finales de 1700 y traída a Davenport, Iowa, a prin cipios de 1900, inadvertidamente, junto con la primera ola de inmi grantes mexicanos a las Quad Cities.

Estudiante de primer año de St. Ambrose gana prestigiosa beca de $10,000

Davenport, IA - Dora De La Cruz-Martínez está encan tada de ser la primera persona de su familia en asistir a la universidad, y una de las 25 receptoras a nivel nacional de una beca de $10,000 Bridging the Dream Scholarship for High School Seniors.

La estudiante de primer año de la Universidad St. Am brose es de West Liberty, Iowa, obtuvo el honor (entre más de 1,000 solicitantes) de Sallie Mae en asociación con el Fondo Universitario Thurgood Marshall. De la CruzMartínez se está especializando en ciencias políticas y en pre-derecho.

Después de presentar una solicitud en vídeo de dos minu tos cuando estaba en el último año de la escuela preparato ria, fue elegida sobre la base de su rendimiento académico y su reputación moral, tanto en su vida académica como personal, según la beca.

Dora eligió St. Ambrose en lugar de la Universidad de Iowa, en parte porque es más pequeña y tiene un gran prestigio académico.

“Sinceramente, es la mejor decisión que he tomado jamás”, dijo ella. “Ir a una escuela más pequeña es lo que necesitaba, y realmente aprecio a todos mis profesores”.

Su madre (que es viuda) emigró a Estados Unidos desde México con su familia cuando ella tenía 3 años, y no fue a la universidad. Dora tiene un hermano dos años menor.

“Ha estado cuidando de nosotros durante mucho tiem po”, dijo de su madre, que se hizo ciudadana a los 20 años.

Dora dijo que significa mucho ser una estudiante univer sitaria de primera generación.

“He estado trabajando muy duro y sólo quiero dem ostrarme a mí misma y a ellos que no quiero continuar con la línea de vivir de cheque en cheque”, dijo. “No quiero decir que necesites una educación universitaria para con seguir un buen trabajo, pero para mí, ese es el caso”.

La madre de Dora trabaja en un almacén de suministros de alimentos naturales en Iowa City. La estudiante de primer año planea estudiar derecho.

“Me encantan mis profesores de ciencias políticas”, dijo Dora. “Siento que les apasiona lo que enseñan y que saben

mucho sobre lo que enseñan. Eso me facilita las cosas. De verdad que te explican todo”.

En SAU, se está involucrando en el club Latino Unidos.

Inversión de 3 millones de dólares

Los 250,000 dólares en nuevas becas para los 25 estu diantes forman parte de un compromiso de 3 millones de dólares durante tres años por parte de The Sallie Mae Fund, la rama filantrópica de Sallie Mae, para ayudar a los estudiantes de comunidades desatendidas en su camino para acceder y completar la educación superior.

Dora y los demás ganadores serán destacados en los ca nales de Twitter y LinkedIn de Sallie Mae durante todo el mes de noviembre para celebrar el Mes Nacional de las Becas.

La beca, en asociación con el Thurgood Marshall College Fund, proporciona a 25 estudiantes merecedores de comu nidades históricamente desatendidas 10,000 dólares a cada uno para ayudarles a acceder a la educación superior.

“Las becas pueden marcar la diferencia a la hora de abrir las puertas de la educación superior, sobre todo a los es tudiantes de bajos ingresos, con escasos recursos y sub representados, que suelen ser los que más apoyo necesi tan”, dijo Nic Jafarieh, vicepresidente ejecutivo de Sallie Mae. Nuestro programa de becas y nuestra asociación con el Thurgood Marshall College Fund siguen ayudando a nivelar el terreno de juego para aquellos que con mucha frecuencia son dejados de lado o se quedan atrás”. La importancia de la educación

Dora se enteró de que había ganado la beca en julio, mientras estaba de vacaciones con su familia en México.

“Me siento increíble y me siento afortunada”, dijo. “Sé que podría haber ido a parar a cualquiera y estoy muy con tenta de que me haya tocado a mí”.

“Creo que fue porque hablé de lo que significaba la edu cación superior para mí, y que la educación superior me sacaría del ciclo de vivir de cheque en cheque”, dijo Dora. “Realmente vieron que tenía la intención de obtener una educación superior”.

El año pasado trabajó como cajera de un banco a tiem po parcial y a tiempo completo. Terminó los créditos de sus cursos y los exámenes (incluyendo español AP y psi cología AP) para graduarse en mayo.

Aunque las becas pueden ser un recurso útil para hacer que la universidad sea más accesible y asequible, muchas familias desconocen su disponibilidad y lo que se necesita para tener derecho a ellas. Una investigación reciente de Sallie Mae e Ipsos descubrió que casi la mitad de las fa milias piensan que las becas sólo se ofrecen por excelencia académica o deportiva, lo que les lleva a no solicitarlas. El último año en la mira: Cindy Barron

Storm Lake, Iowa–”Creo que mi mejor recuerdo no ha llegado todavía; está a punto de llegar. El me jor recuerdo para mí será caminar por ese escenario de graduación en honor a mi madre y mis herma nos. Digo esto porque ya puedo imaginar la inmensa emoción que sentirá mi madre cuando vea a los más pequeños graduarse por fin y crecer. Pensar en todos los sacrificios que hizo mi madre para venir a este país y simplemente darnos la mejor vida y educación representa el significado de por qué graduarse será mi mejor recuerdo.”

Inspirada por su trabajadora madre, María Barron, que crió sola a seis hijos después de mudarse de Jalisco, México, en 1999 a Storm Lake y trabajar en Tyson desde entonces, Cindy Barron, la más joven de los seis, señala: “Los hijos no se dan cuenta de lo que sus padres hacen por ellos”.

“Mi objetivo para mi último año es hacer tantos re cuerdos como pueda antes de que la clase de 2023 se vaya. Quiero hacer que mi familia esté orgullosa, y lograr mi diploma en honor a ellos y a mis hermanos, que desafortunadamente no pudieron graduarse. En general, quiero hacer de este último año escolar uno para recordar toda la vida, para llegar a pasar los últi mos momentos con todos mis amigos de la infancia.”

Cindy actualmente trabaja en Citizens Community Credit Union, pero también ha sido ayudante de dieta en Methodist Manor y trabajó en el programa después de la escuela en East Early Childhood School. La tu toría de STARS, Key Club, iJAg, National Honor Society, y el voluntariado han llenado sus años de escuela preparatoria con experiencias que se alinean con sus metas en la vida.

“Uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos es realizar el au tocuidado, ya sea en mí misma o en los miembros de mi familia. Para mí, el autocuidado es hacer que te sientas guapa de nuevo, ya sea arreglándote las uñas, las pestañas, el pelo o dándote un masaje. Mi favorito de todos los tiempos es un buen tratamiento facial relajante que te hace sentir rejuvenecida y her mosa. Realmente ha sido una pasión mía hacer que los demás se sientan maravillosos en su piel, y espero lograr esa pasión ingresando en Estética”. Cindy planea ir a La James y Iowa Central para obtener su certificación de esteticista y un grado de gestión de la salud y los negocios.

Al principio Cindy quería graduarse antes, pero su mentor de STARS, Jordan Hewett, la animó a no perder su último año. Cindy aprecia que Jordan com parta historias sobre su hermana, que tomó el camino de la cosmetología, porque se alinea con los objeti

vos de Cindy para sí misma y aprecia la experiencia y los consejos de los demás.

“Mi madre me inspira a diario. Ser madre soltera de seis hijos no ha sido fácil, pero siempre ha hecho todo lo posible para darnos todo lo que necesitamos, y esa es una de las muchas razones por las que me in spira. Es sencillamente la persona más desinteresada que conozco, que deja todo lo que tiene para ver a sus hijos y a su familia felices. Mi faceta de voluntaria ha sido gracias a ella. Desde que era más joven recuerdo que mi madre me llevaba con ella a organizaciones de voluntariado, ya fuera para ayudar a personas en fermas que lo necesitaban o para ayudar a nuestra co munidad. Me sale naturalmente del corazón ayudar a alguien cuando lo necesita”.

“Diría que mi madre es mi mayor apoyo. En las buenas y en las malas siempre ha estado a mi lado sin importar el resultado. Ella es de las que dan su opinión antes de hacer algo, pero no importa cuál sea la decisión, ella estará ahí. Estaba indecisa sobre lo que quería hacer en el futuro. Cuando era más jo ven siempre decía que quería ser abogada de inmi gración. Lamentablemente, cuando crecí la idea se fue desvaneciendo poco a poco, lo que entristeció un poco a mi madre, pero nunca se dio por vencida. Ella está ahí apoyándome. Por eso la considero mi mayor apoyo en la vida.

“Mi día suele empezar siempre temprano, ya que me preparo para ir a la escuela. Dependiendo de los horarios y de los deberes que tenga que hacer, mi atuendo se basa en mi día. Si tengo que trabajar en un turno dividido, me aseguro de llevar mi ropa más formal para ir al trabajo después de mis clases.

Si no es el caso, lo mejor es ir de forma casual. Al gunos días entro a trabajar después de la segunda hora, ya que tengo varias horas de campus abierto. Antes de la 1 de la tarde me aseguro de volver a la escuela porque tengo dos clases más antes de termi nar el día. Cuando termina el día me dirijo rápidam ente al trabajo para terminar mi turno. Una vez que termina mi turno es hora de volver a casa y terminar mis obligaciones: hacer los deberes, hacer las tareas o pasear a mi perro.”

“Ser la primera generación de tu familia en gradu arse no es fácil. Se espera que obtengas altas califi caciones para graduarte y recibir muchas becas para la universidad. Lo creas o no, es un obstáculo al que se enfrentan muchos estudiantes como yo. No saber cómo solicitar becas o simplemente cómo solicitar la universidad causa temor. Poco a poco es un obstáculo que estoy muy cerca de superar. Para aquellos estudi antes que se sientan igual que yo, sepan que no están solos y que si alguna vez tienen preguntas hay gente dispuesta a responderlas, pero hay que preguntarle a alguien.

“Una profesora que siempre ocupará un lugar espe cial en mi corazón es una de mis profesoras de iJAG, la Sra. Vrenda Love. No diría que es mi favorita, diría que es más bien como una segunda madre para mí. Su pasión por ayudar a los estudiantes a esforzarse y lograr sus objetivos es realmente excepcional. Su per sonalidad desinteresada realmente va más allá para hacer que sus estudiantes se sientan como si pudieran abrirse con ella y en su clase. La Sra. Vrenda Love siempre significará mucho para mí y siempre estaré muy agradecida por tenerla en mi vida.

“Ha sido un verdadero honor asistir a esta maravil losa escuela preparatoria. La energía y la diversidad que conlleva simplemente me hace querer no irme nunca. Estoy orgullosa de haber sido parte de esta escuela, ya que me ha enseñado muchas cosas y me ha dado muchas oportunidades que siempre agra deceré. Realmente aprecio a la administración por poner siempre a los estudiantes en primer lugar y por encontrar nuevas formas de que los estudiantes con struyan relaciones y ofrecer nuevos clubes que per mitan a los estudiantes reunirse.”

Cindy sabe que esto no fue fácil durante los años de Covid. “Dar a los estudiantes muchos recursos y mu chas organizaciones en las que pueden incluirse es una gran ventaja. Intenté con el Club Internacional, tomando clases universitarias en la Universidad de Buena Vista, Charter. Durante Covid se proporcionó una despensa de alimentos para las familias. Espero que mis futuros hijos puedan asistir a una escuela tan diversa y de apoyo como Storm Lake High School.”

Los boletos para El Rey León de Disney ya están a la venta en el Centro Cívico de Des Moines

Las funciones comienzan el jueves 30 de marzo y se presentan durante 3 semanas hasta el domingo 16 de abril en el Centro Cívico de Des Moines

Des Moines, Iowa- Disney Theatrical Productions y Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) han anunciado que ya es tán disponibles los boletos para el tan esperado regreso de El Rey León de Disney. El regreso más esperado de Des Moines saltará de nuevo al escenario del Civic Center el jueves 30 de marzo de 2023, para un compromiso limitado de 3 semanas hasta el domingo 16 de abril de 2023. El es treno será el viernes 31 de marzo de 2023 a las 19:30 horas. En Des Moines, El Rey León se presentará de martes a vi ernes a las 7:30 pm, los sábados a las 2:00 pm y 7:30 pm y los domingos a la 1:00 p, y 6:30 pm. Habrá una matiné a las 2:00 pm el jueves 30 de marzo. También están disponibles los paquetes de entradas premium, que incluyen una zona de asiento privilegiada, un programa de recuerdo y una mo chila. Antes de convertirse en asesora de carrera en el Cen tro Evelyn K. Davis para familias trabajadoras en Des Moines, Mercedes Morton ya estaba familiarizada con la filial del centro, el Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Empezó en sus clases de aprendizaje de inglés y, unos años más tarde, se graduó con un título de aso ciado. Se convirtió en una intérprete profesional médica y legal antes de asumir su nuevo papel como asesora pro fesional. Su experiencia como asistente legal en derecho de familia e inmigración le proporciona una valiosa visión que utiliza para ayudar a los refugiados e inmigrantes, que son la mayor parte de sus clientes. Disfruta de su papel porque le permite ayudar a personas de diversos orígenes y no cobra por sus servicios, lo que hace que sus servi cios sean accesibles a toda la comunidad. Aunque cree que todo el mundo puede beneficiarse de su ayuda para redactar currículos, preparar entrevistas e identificar opor tunidades de trabajo, considera que es especialmente útil para las personas que hablan español. “Quiero que todo el mundo sepa que tenemos este tipo de centro”, dice, recor dando un encuentro con un cliente que se mudó a Iowa y quedó impresionado por el nivel de ayuda que le propor cionó. “Conozco a personas que son puertorriqueñas y se mudaron aquí desde Florida. Vivieron allí durante muchos años. Dicen que le dicen a todo el mundo que venga a Des Moines porque en Florida no tienen estos servicios”. Más que entregar a los clientes una lista de lugares a los que llamar y enviarlos por su cuenta, Morton comparte sus recursos y refiere a las personas en situaciones únicas. Por ejemplo, tuvo un cliente que acudió a ella porque estaba interesado en tomar clases de contabilidad en el DMACC. Sin embargo, nadie en el campus entendía su situación, así que lo enviaron a ella. Tras una breve conversación, se enteró de que ya había obtenido el certificado de cont abilidad en su país de origen. Ella utilizó su conocimiento de la ley de inmigración para enseñarle cómo transferir sus credenciales profesionales a Iowa y evitar años de cur sos innecesarios. Mientras que el Centro Evelyn K. Davis no tiene los medios para hacer que los clientes pasen por

Morton puede identificarse con muchos de sus clientes. Originaria de El Salvador, Morton llegó a Iowa hace casi veinte años tras conocer a su marido, nativo de Iowa. Se mudaron a Des Moines, donde ella se quedó en casa con sus dos hijos. Mientras los niños eran pequeños, Morton dedicó su tiempo a aprender inglés, tomar clases y ser vol untaria en la comunidad. El asesoramiento financiero es otro servicio gratuito dis ponible en el Centro Evelyn K. Davis y, según el asesor financiero Jeff Graney, es similar al trabajo con un asesor personal, pero centrado en la salud de su futuro financiero. Cuando las familias apren den métodos de ahorro, a trabajar para conseguir objetivos financieros a corto y largo plazo, y a gestionar sus pre supuestos, la brecha de la riqueza empieza a reducirse al introducir conceptos y hábitos que no eran posibles en en tornos de supervivencia basados únicamente en el sueldo. A veces, Graney y Morton trabajan juntos para ayudar a los clientes. Si un cliente no puede encontrar un empleo adecuado, pueden ayudarle a buscar hábitos presupues tarios alternativos, o incluso a considerar la posibilidad de crear su propio negocio. El Centro Evelyn K. Davis tam bién cuenta con asesores empresariales que pueden ayudar a los clientes a determinar lo que necesitan para abrir un pequeño negocio. Si bien estos asesores no son bilingües, los asesores empresariales trabajan en equipo con Graney y Morton para asegurarse de que los clientes de habla hispana sean atendidos en el idioma que prefieran. Graney cree que el empoderamiento significa dar a los clientes las herramientas que necesitan y señalarles los recursos adec uados para la orientación, en lugar de un enfoque de tipo “hágalo usted mismo”. “Es una colaboración”, dice. Celebrating Our Lady of Guadalupe in Iowa

December 12 is an important celebration for many people of faith in the Latino community. This is the day when many believers celebrate the Feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Many events are happening all over Iowa to honor and celebrate la Virgencita. Here is a list of some celebrations happening in Iowa.

Davenport

Sunday, December 11 at 5 AM, and Monday, December 12 at 5:30 PM at St. Anthony’s Church in Davenport

Sunday the celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe will begin at 5 am with Las Mañanitas. There will be a mass and special dance by Danza Azteca Asunción at 10 am. At 11 am there will be a rosary with Tamborazo following the rosary. Mass will start at 12 pm and at 1 pm another pre sentation by Danza Azteca Asunción and food.

On Monday December 12 the celebration will start with the rosary at 5:30 followed by mass at 6:30 pm. The eve ning will end at 7:30 pm with Danza Azteca Asunción and food.

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s migration to Davenport, IA

A unique painting of Our Lady of Gua dalupe is at the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. It was made by Mexican artist Andres de Islas, active during the 1750’s through 1773, and is part of the original museum gift from C. A. Ficke to the city of Davenport that he acquired in 1901 in Mexico City. During the same time, the early 1900’s, many Mexican immigrants came to Iowa and Illinois escaping the Mexican Revolution looking for a better life for them and their families and to fill the labor shortage caused by the U.S. en try into World War I.

It is a very important painting to discover as it is part of the Mexican Colonial Col lection at the Figge. The image is impor tant because it helps rediscover our culture and creates the sense that she accompanies her “hijos” and “hijas” on their journey to a new country. Many Latinx immigrants rely on their faith and devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe to get them through the challenges and difficulties of leaving their home country.

The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe is that she was the apparition of the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary to an indigenous man, Juan Diego. The first appearance happened on December 9, 1531 where she spoke to him in his native language, Nahuatl asking for a church to be built on the site on which she appeared. The local bishop, Fray Juan de Zumarraga, the first bishop of Mexico, asked for a miraculous sign as proof of her apparition.

The painting depicts the moment when Our Lady told Juan Diego to gather flow ers in the middle of winter and place them on his tilma before presenting them to the bishop. When the roses fell, the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on De cember 12, 1531. Three days after her first apparition to Juan Diego.

The painting highlights the differences between Spain and the indigenous people at the time. The artist made sure Saint Juan Diego has indigenous features, unlike oth

er paintings of Saint Juan Diego painted by Spanish artists, which depict him with strong European features. The dark colors around the main image contrast the much brighter colors on Our Lady of Guadalupe and become the focal point that draws our attention. The Bishop’s image is also pow erful, particularly the angle of his hand in the painting. The crown on Our Lady of Guadalupe represents that she is the queen of all that is created. The crown is not on the original image of Our Lady of Guada lupe but it is a unique trait to this painting. What makes the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe so unique is that she is a mix of both Spanish and indigenous features, showing a sense of unity among both cultures. The artist, Andres de Islas was known for nonreligious images of people, his paintings portrayed the divisions and racial mixtures of colonial Mexico.

As we prepare to celebrate Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12, we prepared a list (on page 16) of the celebrations in the communities of Iowa and Illinois be low. Keep in mind that with the current pandemic all these celebrations are subject to change.

We also encourage you to visit the Figge Art Museum in Davenport to check out the gorgeous painting of Our Lady of Gua dalupe that was created in the late 1700’s and brought to Davenport Iowa in the ear ly 1900’s, inadvertently, alongside the first wave of Mexican immigrants to the Quad Cities.

Bilingual Coaches at the Evelyn K. Davis Center Empower Clients to Reach Financial and Professional Goals

Before becoming a Career Coach at the Evelyn K. Davis Center for Working Fami lies in Des Moines, Mercedes Morton was already familiar with the center’s affiliate, Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). She started in their English Language Learner classes and followed it up by graduating with an Associate degree a few years later. She became a profession al medical and legal interpreter before tak ing on her newest role as a Career Coach. Her experience working as a legal assistant in family and immigration law provides valuable insight she uses to help refugees and immigrants, a large bulk of her clients. She enjoys her role because it allows her to help people with diverse backgrounds and there is no charge for her services, which makes her services accessible to the entire community. While she believes everyone can benefit from her assistance in writing resumes, preparing for interviews, and identifying job leads, she feels it is espe cially helpful to people who speak Spanish. “I want everyone to know we have this sort of center,” she says, recalling an encounter with a client who moved to Iowa and was impressed by the level of help she provid ed. “I know people who are Puerto Rican and moved here from Florida. They lived there for many years. They said they tell everyone to come to Des Moines because they don’t have these services in Florida.” More than handing clients a list of plac es to call and sending them on their way, Morton shares resources and refers people in unique scenarios. For example, she had a client who came to her because he was interested in taking accounting classes at DMACC. However, no one on the cam pus understood his situation so they sent him to her. After a brief conversation, she learned that he had already been certified in accounting in his home country. She used her knowledge of immigration law to educate him on how to transfer his profes sional credentials to Iowa and avoid years of unnecessary courses. While the Evelyn

K. Davis Center doesn’t have the means to get clients through the process, as a Career Coach Morton provided the correct referral and walked him through the steps to ensure he had the paperwork he needed along the way.

Morton can relate to a lot of her clients. Originally from El Salvador, Morton came to Iowa nearly twenty years ago after meet ing her husband, a native Iowan. They moved to Des Moines, where she was a stay-at-home mom to their two children. While the kids were young, Morton spent her time learning English, taking classes and volunteering in the community. After completing her second degree at Mercy College, she filled various roles where her Spanish skills allowed her to work in her mother tongue and help new Iowans navigate systems she had traversed herself. Now that her children are independent, she has had more time to build her career. Ev elyn K. Davis Center’s mission to empow er people to connect to their professional goals and reach financial stability excites her because it was a part of her journey as she established her life in Des Moines. Working as a Career Coach is a full circle opportunity for her because she remembers years back when she went to the Evelyn K. Davis Center as a client and worked with a Financial Coach to save money to buy a car.

Financial Coaching is another free ser vice available at the Evelyn K. Davis Center and according to Financial Coach Jeff Graney, it’s similar to working with a personal trainer, but focuses on the health of your financial future. Graney, who has been learning and speaking Spanish since middle school, sees his role as a motivator who can help clients. He says of his work, “I look at their spending behaviors and help them learn to modify them through education about the role of credit scores, home-buying, budgeting, establishing credit, and eliminating debt.” Graney en joys working one-on-one with clients and taking them through the steps they need to

establish and reach their financial goals. Helping in Spanish is an added joy to Graney, who spent six years in Salamanca, Spain and devoted his undergraduate years at Iowa State to learning Spanish and Latin American history.

Alarcón Avila may have been educated as a biologist, but art feeds her soul. “I love biology. It gave me the capability to observe, investigate and analyze. At the end of the day, we are all humans. We have feelings and complexities that are hard to analyze, but art helps to touch souls. I am proud to represent people who look and talk like me, and show kids that look like mine, so they can see themselves in my work.”

Much of the work he does revolves around creating a better relationship with money, helping clients break cycles of pov erty. When families learn methods of sav ing, working towards long-term and shortterm financial goals, and how to manage their budgets, the wealth gap begins to narrow by introducing concepts and habits that were not possible in environments of paycheck-to-paycheck survival.

At times, Graney and Morton work to gether to help clients. If a client is unable to find adequate employment, they may help the client look at alternate budgeting habits, or even consider starting a business.

The Evelyn K. Davis Center also has Busi ness Coaches who can help clients map out what they need to open a small business. While those coaches are not bilingual, the Business Coaches team up with Graney and Morton to make sure Spanish-speak ing clients are served in the language they prefer. Graney believes that empowerment means giving clients the tools they need and pointing them towards the right re sources for guidance, rather than a DIY ap proach. “It’s a partnership,” he says. That’s why he works with them to create step-bystep plans and gives them individual atten tion. Ultimately, the Career, Business and Financial Coaches create a network to help empower clients to become self-sufficient,

Iowa IV wants to help you take your health to the next level

Des Moines, IA - December is the time when many people start thinking about New Year’s resolutions. As the saying goes, “new year, new you.” If you resolve to get healthier or maybe lose a couple of those stubborn pounds, consider reaching your goal with help from Iowa IV.

What is Iowa IV?

Iowa IV is a hydration therapy clinic.

Weight-loss treatment

In addition to hydration and vitamins, Iowa IV offers the administration of Semaglutide that could help patients to lose extra pounds.

Semaglutide is an FDA-approved medication for weight loss that is administered once a week. This is for adults suffering from obesity who also have weight-related medi cal problems.

This medication helps overweight individuals lose weight and keep it off. Semaglutide works by mimicking the hor mone GLP-1 in the areas of the brain that are responsible for appetite and food intake. It will help patients eat less. Semaglutide should be used along with a nutritional plan and increased physical activity.

“The medication is administered once a week in the bel ly fat with a needle the size of an eyelash,” Sanchez ex plained how Semaglutide is administered and who is not eligible for this type of therapy. “Exclusion criteria not to do the therapy are patients with: type 1 diabetes, thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, or pregnant or intend to become preg nant. Otherwise, most all other patients can be a candi date, but we do recommend all patients to consult with their doctor first.”

Tickets for Disney’s The Lion King are now on sale at the Des Moines Civic Center

Performances begin on Thursday, March 30th and play for 3 weeks through Sunday, April 16th at the Des Moines Civic Center

Des Moines, Iowa- Disney Theatrical Productions and Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) announced that tickets for the long-awaited return engagement of Disney’s The Lion King are now available. Des Moines’ most eagerly awaited return will once again leap onto the Civic Center stage on Thursday, March 30th, 2023, for a limited engagement of 3 weeks through Sunday, April 16th, 2023. The opening perfor mance is Friday, March 31st, 2023 at 7:30pm.

In Des Moines, The Lion King will play Tuesdays through Fridays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 2pm and 7:30pm and Sun days at 1pm and 6:30pm. There will be a 2pm matinee on Thursday, March 30th. Premium Ticket Packages, which in clude a prime seat location, a souvenir program and a cinch bag, are also available. Tickets are now available at the Civic

St. Ambrose freshman earns prestigious $10,000 scholarship

Davenport, IA - Dora De La Cruz-Mar tinez is thrilled to be the first person in her family to attend college, and just one of 25 nationwide recipients of a $10,000 Bridg ing the Dream Scholarship for High School Seniors.

The St. Ambrose University freshman from West Liberty, Iowa, earned the honor (out of over 1,000 applicants) from Sallie Mae in partnership with Thurgood Mar shall College Fund. De La Cruz-Martinez is majoring in political science, and minor ing in pre-law.

After submitting a two-minute video ap plication as a high school senior, she was chosen based on her academic performance and upstanding moral character, both in her academic and personal life, according to the scholarship.

Dora chose St. Ambrose over the Univer sity of Iowa, partly because it’s smaller and has a great academic reputation.

“It’s the best decision I’ve ever made, honestly,” she said Thursday. “Going to a smaller school is what I needed, and I re ally appreciate all my professors.”

Her mother (who is widowed) immigrat ed to the U.S. from Mexico with her family when she was 3, and didn’t go to college. Dora has a brother two years younger.

“She’s been taking care of us for the lon gest time,” she said of her mom, who be came a citizen in her 20s.

Dora said it means a lot to be a first-gen eration college student.

“I’ve been working really hard and I just want to prove to myself and to them, I don’t want to keep the chain of living paycheck to paycheck,” she said. “I don’t mean to

say you need a college education to get a good job, but for me, that is the case.”

Dora’s mom works in a natural foods supply warehouse in Iowa City. The fresh man plans to go to law school.

“I love my political science professors,” Dora said. “I feel like they’re really pas sionate about what they teach and just know so much about what they teach. That makes it easier for me. They really talk you through everything.”

At SAU, she’s getting involved with the Latino Unidos club.

$3-million investment

The $250,000 in new scholarships for the 25 students is part of a $3-million commit ment over three years by The Sallie Mae Fund, the charitable arm of Sallie Mae, to help students from underserved communi ties on their journey to access and com plete higher education.

Dora and the other winners will be high lighted on Sallie Mae’s Twitter and Linke dIn channels throughout November in cel ebration of National Scholarship Month.

The scholarship, in partnership with Thur good Marshall College Fund, provides 25 deserving students from historically under served communities with $10,000 each to help them access higher education.

“Scholarships can be a real difference maker in opening the doors of higher edu cation, particularly to low-income, underresourced, and underrepresented students, who often need the most support,” said Nic Jafarieh, executive vice president, Sallie Mae. “Our scholarship program and part nership with Thurgood Marshall College Fund continues to help level the playing field for those too often left out or left be

hind. This year’s diverse recipients are im pressive and well on their way to accom plishing great things.”

“Our partnership with The Sallie Mae Fund means we can reach more students in need and those who may have thought higher education was out of reach,” said Harry L. Williams, president and CEO, Thurgood Marshall College Fund. “These scholarships can change the lives of stu dents and ensure they have the opportunity to pursue higher education and build suc cessful college careers.”

The importance of education Dora found out about winning the schol arship in July, while she was on vacation with her family in Mexico.

“It feels amazing and I feel fortunate,” she said. “I know it could have gone to anyone and I’m really happy that it went to me.”

“I think it was because I talked about what higher education meant to me, and that higher education would get me out of

the cycle of living paycheck to paycheck,” Dora said. “They really saw I had the in tention of getting higher education.”

She worked as a bank teller part-time and full-time this past year. She finished her course credits and tests (including AP Spanish and AP psychology) for gradua tion in May.

While scholarships can be a helpful re source in making college more accessible and affordable, many families are unaware about their availability and what it takes to qualify. Recent research from Sallie Mae and Ipsos found nearly half of families think scholarships are only offered for aca demic or athletic excellence leading them to bypass applying altogether.

Senior Spotlight: Cindy Barron

Storm Lake, Iowa–“I think my best memory has not come yet; it’s about to come. The best memory for me will be walking that stage in honor of my mother and my siblings. I say this because I can already imagine the immense excitement my mother will feel when she sees her youngest finally graduating and growing up. Thinking about all the sacrifices my mother made to come to this country and to simply give us the best life and educa tion represents the significance as to why graduating will be my best memory.”

Inspired by her hardworking mom, Maria Barron, who raised six children alone af ter moving from Jalisco, Mexico in 1999 to Storm Lake and working at Tyson ever since, Cindy Barron, the youngest of the six, notes, “Kids don’t realize their parents do that for them.”

“My goal for my senior year is to make as many memories as I can before the Class of 2023 departs. I want to make my family proud, and achieve my diploma in honor of them and my siblings, who unfortunately weren’t able to graduate. Overall I want to make this last school year one to remember for a lifetime, to get to spend the last mo ments with all my childhood friends.”

Cindy currently works at Citizens Com munity Credit Union, but she has also been a dietary aide at Methodist Manor and worked the after school program at East Early Childhood School. STARS mentor ing, Key Club, iJAg, National Honor So ciety, and volunteering have filled her high school years with experiences that align with her goals in life.

“One of my favorite pastimes is perform ing self-care, either on myself or on fam ily members. Self-care for me is making yourself feel beautiful again by either do ing your nails, lashes, hair or giving a mas sage. My all time favorite is a nice relax ing facial that makes you feel rejuvenated and beautiful. It has truly been a passion of mine to make others feel wonderful in their skin, and I hope to accomplish that passion by going into Esthetics.” Cindy plans to go

to La James and Iowa Central to earn her esthetician certification and a health and business management degree.

At first Cindy wanted to graduate early, but her STARS mentor, Jordan Hewett, encouraged her to not miss out on her se nior year. Cindy appreciates Jordan shar ing stories about her sister who took the cosmetology pathway because it aligns with Cindy’s goals for herself and she ap preciates others’ expertise and advice.

“My mother inspires me daily. Being a single mother to six kids has not been easy but she has always done her best to give us everything we need, and that is one of the many reasons why she inspires me. She is just simply the most selfless person I know that will give up everything she owns to see her kids and her family happy. My volunteering side has been thanks to her. Ever since I was younger I remember my mother taking me with her to volunteering organizations, whether to help sick people in need or to help out our community. It naturally comes out of my heart to help someone when they need it.”

“I would say that my mother is my big gest supporter. Through thick and thin she has always stood beside me no matter what the outcome might be. She is one to give an opinion before you do something but no matter what the decision might be she’ll be there. I was undecided as to what I wanted to do in the future. My younger self al ways said I wanted to be an Immigration Lawyer. Sadly, when I grew up the thought slowly faded away which made my mom a bit sad but she never gave up on me. She is there supporting me. That is why I consider her my biggest supporter in life.

“My day usually always starts bright and early, as I get myself ready for school. De pending on schedules and errands I have to run, my outfit is based on my day. If I have to work a split shift I make sure to wear my most formal clothing to head to work after my classes.

If that’s not the case casual is the way to go. I somedays go into work after second period, since I have several hours of open campus. Before 1 p.m. I make sure to be back on my way to school because I have two more classes before we end the day.

After the day ends I head quickly back to work to finish my shift. Once my shift ends it’s time for me to head back home and finish my duties: doing homework, doing chores, or walking my dog.”

“Being the first generation graduate does not come easily. I am expected to earn high grades to graduate and receive many schol arships for college. Believe it or not it is an obstacle many students like myself face. Not knowing how to apply for scholarships or simply how to even apply for college causes dread. Slowly but surely that is one obstacle that I am very close to overcom ing. To those students who may feel the same way as I do, just know you’re not alone and that if you ever have questions there are people willing to answer them but you have to ask someone.

“One teacher who will forever hold a spe cial place in my heart is one of my iJAG teachers, Mrs. Vrenda Love. I wouldn’t say she is my favorite, I’d say she is more like a second mother to me. Her passion towards helping students strive and ac complish their goals is truly outstanding. Her selfless persona truly goes above and

beyond to make her students feel as if they can open themselves up with her and in her classroom. Mrs. Vrenda Love will always mean a lot to me and I will always be ex tremely thankful for having her in my life.

“It has truly been an honor to attend this wonderful high school. The energy and di versity it carries simply makes me want to never leave. I am proud to have been a part of this school, as it has taught me many things and it has given me many opportu nities that I will forever be thankful for. I truly appreciate the administration for al ways putting the students first and for find ing new ways for students to build relation ships and offering new clubs that allowed students to get together.”

Cindy knows this was not easy during the Covid years. “Giving the students many resources and many organizations they can include themselves in is a big plus. I tried International Club, taking college classes at Buena Vista University, Charter. They provided a food pantry during Covid for families. I hope my future kids are able to attend a school as diverse and supportive as Storm Lake High School.
