Convocatoria de propuestas para la Cumbre Empresarial Athene Black & Brown. Ya se pueden presentar solicitudes.

La Cámara de Comercio de West Des Moines recibe solicitudes a partir del miércoles 1 de febrero para el concurso de pitch (propuestas) 2023 del Athene Black & Brown Business Summit (BBBS), organizado por Bank of America. La fecha límite para presentar solicitudes es el miércoles 1 de marzo antes de las 5 p.m.

“El concurso Black & Brown Business Summit de la Cámara de West Des Moines es una gran oportunidad para que las empresas propiedad de minorías se impulsen hacia el éxito”, dijo Annie Brandt, vicepresidenta senior, ejecutiva de mercado, Bank of America Iowa. “Estamos emocionados y honrados de asociarnos de nuevo con la Cámara de West Des Moines para esta increíble oportunidad”. Se anuncia el segundo grupo del programa de liderazgo Leadership QC

Janessa Calderón, directora ejecutiva de la Cámara de Comercio Hispana de los Quad Cities, es una de las participantes.

La segunda promoción del programa Leadership QC, de nueve meses de duración, de la Cámara de Comercio de los Quad Cities empezó esta semana. Estos 16 miembros son ya líderes en empresas, administraciones públicas y organizaciones sin fines de lucro.

“El propósito de Leadership QC es crear un espacio para que las personas con vocación comunitaria se reúnan para aprender acerca de la responsabilidad social de las empresas y para aprovechar su liderazgo existente hacia objetivos comunes en nuestra comunidad”, dijo LaDrina Wilson, CEO de la Cámara de los Quad Cities. “El objetivo es que la gente aprenda un poco sobre sí misma, pero también que se conecte con lo que realmente significa ser un creador de ideas y un líder regional”.

Charla Hollowell, Directora Financiera del Centro Comunitario de Salud Mental Vera French, espera comprender mejor la visión de la comunidad para la zona y conectar con quienes desean hacer realidad esa visión. “Me gustaría mucho adquirir conocimientos y contactos con grupos con los que no interactúo a diario, y trabajar juntos para que nuestra región sea lo mejor posible para los residentes actuales y las generaciones futuras”, declaró Hollowell.

Randall Goblirsch, Director de Comunicaciones y Marketing de la Universidad de St. Ambrose, vive en los Quad Cities desde hace casi 12 años. Durante este tiempo, Goblirisch ha experimentado mucho de lo que hace especial a esta región. “Con los años, he desarrollado un profundo compromiso con mi comunidad. Entrevista exclusiva: Aline Mayagoitia La Reina Katherine Howard en SIX The Musical en el Des Moines Civic Center

Des Moines, IA - Hola Iowa realizó una entrevista exclusiva con Aline Mayagoitia, una de las intérpretes de SIX The Musical, que se presentará en el Des Moines Civic Center del 7 al 19 de febrero.

Hola Aline, por favor dime tu nombre completo, de dónde eres y qué personaje interpretas en SIX The Musical.

Mi nombre es Aline Mayagoitia, soy originaria de la Ciudad de México, pero estudié un poco en Austin, Texas. Y ahora interpreto a Katherine Howard en SIX The Musical.

¿De qué trata SIX The Musical?

SIX The Musical es un espectáculo musical pop sobre las seis esposas de Enrique VIII reencarnadas en estas fabulosas reinas del pop que cuentan su historia desde su punto de vista. El rey Enrique VIII no aparece en el espectáculo. Y hablan de cómo algunas de ellas se divorciaron, otras fueron decapitadas por él y la forma en que todos sus matrimonios y maltratos por él se entrelazaron, pero de una manera muy divertida con la mejor música y mucho baile. Y la mejor iluminación que jamás haya visto.

Durante tu infancia, ¿cuáles fueron algunos de los artistas que te inspiraron?

Soy una fanática del teatro musical, evidentemente. Estoy obsesionada con Bernadette Peters desde que era niña pero, sinceramente, para este espectáculo me siento como si estuviera haciendo de Thalia y, obviamente, de Selena y de mi época de Belinda de cuando era niña, ya sabes, con mis trenzas.

Es como todas estas reinas del pop, creo que al crecer en México, tuve una educación un poco diferente porque Britney Spears no era tan importante para mí como lo fue Thalia. Estas son mis reinas de inspiración.

¿Qué le dirías al público joven que aspira a los mismos sueños que tú?

A cualquiera que esté interesado en seguir una carrera en el teatro musical en particular, lo mejor que puede hacer es formarse todo lo que pueda mientras sea joven, sobre todo en formación en baile. Aunque no quieras ser bailarín, la formación en baile ayuda en todo. Te ayuda a estar mejor en el escenario e incluso en un espectáculo como SIX, en el que principalmente cantamos y actuamos, pero, sorpresa, bailamos durante todo el espectáculo, así que es una experiencia de triple desafío, más de lo que se piensa cuando se ve por primera vez SIX The Musical, así que sí, entrena todo lo que puedas y sobre todo ten buenos hábitos de salud vocal. Hacer ejercicios de calentamiento todos los días cuando eres joven. A veces, cuando eres joven, no tienes que hacerlo, pero es entonces cuando adquieres el hábito y, una vez que empiezas a hacer presentaciones ocho veces a la semana, lo cual es realmente agotador, tienes la disciplina para hacerlo.

¿Qué podemos esperar de SIX en el Des Moines Civic Center?

Lo que se puede esperar de SIX The Musical es, en primer lugar, que el espectáculo dura sólo 85 minutos, cosa que nos encanta. Así que ve al baño antes porque vas a querer quedarte hasta el final. ¿De acuerdo? Así que, entras y vamos a empezar a contarte las historias de estas reinas con la iluminación más genial que jamás hayas visto y es mucha energía. Honestamente, el espectáculo es muy divertido en el sentido de que competimos entre nosotras porque está enmarcado como la comparación de qué esposa lo pasó peor. Creo que esa es una parte muy divertida. El público puede decir: “Me gusta más ella o

creo que ella lo pasó peor”. Y luego, al final, hay un giro muy divertido sobre cómo se desarrolló todo. Así que, sí, te lo pasarás muy bien. Si tienes sobrinas, nietos o hijos, chicos y chicas de 7 a 77 años, esa es la mejor edad para SIX The Musical. A todos les encantará.

Y van a salir felices por este historia donde realmente las mujeres hablamos de lo que es ser mujeres y reclamamos nuestro poder a través de estas figuras históricas así que se lo van a pasar muy bien.

El restaurante Tullpa de Des Moines saborea su gran inauguración gracias a la ayuda recién servida del Centro Evelyn K Davis

Des Moines, IA - Los residentes de Des Moines pueden darse un festín de auténtica comida peruana, ecuatoriana y colombiana en el Restaurante Tullpa en Merle Hay Road. La fundadora Gloria Henríquez subió la temperatura y lanzó Tullpa a principios de enero de 2023.

“Es una cocina de fusión. Estamos tratando de fusionar un poco de aquí, un poco de allá”, dijo Gloria. “Cada día las ventas van subiendo poco a poco, así que la gente empieza a fijarse en nuestro restaurante, en nuestro anuncio, en nuestras redes sociales”.

Gloria se mudó a Iowa desde Nueva York hace cuatro años. Como anterior directora general de una empresa de comida rápida, Gloria tenía mucha experiencia en el sector de los restaurantes. Sin embargo, no fue hasta que se mudó a Iowa cuando la idea de montar un restaurante le pareció factible.

“Pensé que [su sueño] era algo probablemente demasiado grande. Es una gran decisión; tienes que prepararte con muchas cosas. Pero cuando llegué aquí, empecé a trabajar con distintos restaurantes y pensé: ‘Quizá me plantee abrir mi propio restaurante’”, dice Gloria.

Gloria recurrió al Evelyn K Davis Center (EKDC) para dar vida a su sueño. Sabía que el centro sin fines de lucro le proporcionaría los ingredientes adecuados para conseguirlo.

“Buscaba asesoramiento y apoyo en ese momento y realmente me ayudaron mucho. Trabajaron conmigo; me presentaron a alguien que puede hacer un seguimiento personalizado conmigo”, dijo Gloria.

Gloria se asoció con un asesor empresarial que la acompañó a lo largo de todo el proceso, desde la investigación hasta la preparación de la empresa.

Además, Gloria aprovechó las clases

adicionales que se ofrecen en el EKDC, como conocimientos de informática para pequeñas empresas. “Nunca tuve un centro así en Nueva York, donde puedes ir e interactuar con alguien que te puede entrenar y guiar en un aspecto diferente, aunque estés haciendo negocios o preparándote para otra cosa. Y creo que eso es algo muy importante, tener ese tipo de apoyo comunitario en Des Moines”, dijo Gloria.

Gloria se puso en contacto con el EKDC por su apoyo a las minorías. Aunque su intención original era adquirir los conocimientos necesarios para poner en marcha un negocio, Gloria salió con ayuda para créditos, asistencia financiera y una red de contactos más amplia.

“Siempre siento que es un centro comunitario que trabaja para nosotros, para las pequeñas minorías o para quien necesite ayuda. Es como si fueras allí y tuvieran un montón de programas diferentes, desde soluciones para pequeñas empresas hasta incluso si necesitas ayuda para prepararte para las entrevistas”, dijo Gloria. Al igual que el EKDC, Tullpa existe para servir a la gente de Des Moines. Gloria hace hincapié en que su restaurante es un lugar acogedor para todas las edades y etnias.

“La población latina en Iowa está creciendo, pero también, al mismo tiempo, veo la aceptación de todo el vecindario y la comunidad de la comida latina”, dijo Gloria. “Mi visión es ver mi restaurante llegar al siguiente nivel. Actualmente, la cocina de Tullpa cuenta con unos 12 empleados, pero Tullpa quiere ampliar este número a medida que sigan aumentando las ventas. El EKDC se enorgullece de haber contribuido al éxito de Gloria.

“He estado muy agradecida con lo que el Evelyn K Davis Center hizo por mí, y siempre siento que tienen muchos

recursos y te ofrecen mucho apoyo. Y eso, para un pequeño empresario, significa mucho”, dijo Gloria.

West Des Moines, IA- The West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce (WDM Chamber) is accepting applications starting Wednesday, February 1 for the 2023 Athene Black & Brown Business Summit (BBBS) pitch competition, brought to you by exclusive pitch competition partner Bank of America. Deadline to submit applications is Wednesday, March 1 by 5 p.m.

The Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines (LLI) is the only leadership development program open to all women but focused on emerging Latina leaders in Iowa; by filling the gap in the lack of culturally appropriate leadership training for Latina women.

Applicants to the 2023 Athene BBBS pitch competition must be 51% minority owned, have been in business for at least two years and be a for-profit business. Those who are selected will be invited to participate on April 20 in small business workshops featuring area experts. Applicants also have the opportunity to win part of a cash prize given to the companies with the best pitches. Over the last two years, pitch competition winners have received a total of $52,000 in prize money.

Estilista local abre nueva peluquería en el centro histórico de Marshalltown

Marshalltown, IA- La estilista peluquera local Nancy Avila causó sensación el pasado fin de semana en el centro histórico de Marshalltown con la gran apertura de su nueva peluquería, One Love Barbershop. La gran apertura de la nueva peluquería, situada en 16 N. 1st Ave., fue la culminación de un sueño de mucho tiempo para Avila. Con el nuevo lugar la oriunda de Marshalltown finalmente tendrá un hogar permanente para sus habilidades profesionales.

“Siempre he querido tener mi propia peluquería. Ya sabes, siendo una chica, no se ven muchas peluqueras”, dijo Avila, describiendo el “momento aha” que tuvo una vez que abrió la peluquería. “Ahora está aquí, y estoy como, guau, esto soy yo. Esto es mío. Es una sensación muy buena. Hace diez meses estaba organizando mi propio equipo y ahora voy a tener mi propia barbería”.

Sin embargo, como admite Avila, el camino hasta su actual situación no ha estado exento de baches y obstáculos para la joven empresaria.

Después de haber sido estilista en diferentes salones de la zona de Marshalltown y alrededores, Avila quería ser capaz de cortar todo tipo y estilo de cabello para su diversa clientela.

“No quería ser la persona que no sabía cómo hacerlo”, dijo Avila. “Así que lo llevé a otro nivel”.

Esta búsqueda de la maestría en su oficio la llevó a matricularse y graduarse en la escuela de peluquería, ampliando su repertorio de corte de pelo y sumándose a su formación y experiencia previas en cosmetología.

Sin embargo, para Ávila, el hecho de ser mujer e intentar abrirse camino en el sector de la peluquería supuso dificultades iniciales.

“Al principio fue duro”, dice. “Los chicos decían: ‘Nunca me ha cortado el pelo una chica. No quiero que una chica me corte el pelo’. Me hirieron mis sentimientos en el camino”.

A pesar de ello, Avila siguió adelante, creando poco a poco relaciones y vínculos con los clientes que ahora acuden a ella en gran número.

“Me alegro de que todo eso me pasara en un momento dado, porque eso me ha convertido en lo que soy”, dice. “Mientras los clientes salgan de aquí sintiéndose satisfechos ellos mismos... eso es lo que me hace sentirme orgullosa de mi trabajo”. Ahora, con su propio local y otros dos peluqueros que planean trabajar junto a ella, espera crear en el nuevo establecimiento algo así como un ambiente inclusivo y desenfadado.

“A veces entras en una peluquería y, para una mujer, es un poco incómodo entrar en una peluquería de hombres”, dice Avila.

“Quiero estar bien con mi clientela masculina y bien con la parte femenina, donde se sientan cómodas trayendo a los niños, donde las chicas se sientan cómodas haciendo entrar a su novio”.

Hasta ahora, todo ha sido positivo para la nueva propietaria del negocio desde la gran apertura, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta el gran apoyo que ya ha recibido de la comu-

nidad.

“Está resultando increíble”, afirma Ávila. “Nunca esperé tanto apoyo, y la comunidad, la gente que salió sólo para ver y estar aquí, es agradable”.

Oficial de Servicio Comunitario Gracie Vrieze cierra sus 29½ años de carrera con el Departamento de Policía de Storm Lake con una lista de logros impresionantes y la admiración de la comunidad Storm Lake.

“Gracie fue y es una pionera”, afirma el ex Jefe de Policía de Storm Lake, Mark Prosser, que la contrató en 1993.

Vrieze, de 54 años, fue la primera agente de servicios a la comunidad y personal multilingüe empleada por el departamento de policía y la ciudad.

Fue una de las primeras, si no la primera, funcionaria

“A través de su servicio, Gracie ayudó a preparar el programa de agentes de servicios a la comunidad de tal manera que ha sido reconocido a nivel nacional en medios impresos y de vídeo durante más de dos décadas”, añade Prosser.

Los problemas de salud han influido en su decisión de retirarse en este momento. “Realmente quería llegar al menos a los 30 años”.

En 2006 le diagnosticaron un cáncer de mama contra el que lucha a brazo partido. Con los años se hizo conocida como una superviviente inspiradora.

En 2020 fue hospitalizada con COVID-19 en el St. Luke’s de Sioux City. Esto fue antes de que hubiera vacunas dis-

ponibles. “Estuve a punto de morir”, dijo al Storm Lake Times Pilot. “Estaba en coma e intubada”. También tuvo que luchar contra los efectos secundarios. Incluso caminar era un reto. “Tenía muchas ganas de trabajar”, dice, pero pasaron varias semanas hasta que pudo hacerlo.

térprete a la población latina, que en aquel momento contaba con unas 300 familias. Otras de sus tareas eran la vigilancia de domicilios, la asistencia a ambulancias, la escolta de funerales, la seguridad en tiendas, las multas de aparcamiento, los vehículos abandonados y el servicio comunitario en las escuelas.

Sin embargo, según Prosser, Gracie se vio inmersa en algunas de las investigaciones más serias, peligrosas y de más alto nivel de las que se ocupaba el departamento, “y siempre respondió con elegancia, profesionalidad y dignidad”.

Tuvo un papel decisivo en un caso de falsificación que llevó al Servicio Secreto a la ciudad.

“Recuerdo algunos de los casos trágicos”, dijo Vrieze. Mencionó el incendio que se cobró la vida de dos niños pequeños y su tío en Vista Estates Mobile Home Park en 1996. También recuerda con tristeza el incidente en el que murió ahogado un joven de 17 años.

Cuando Vrieze era la única persona del departamento que hablaba español, le tocó a ella convencer a un hombre de que soltara el arma “como en las películas”, dijo en una reunión en Our Place en 2019. El hombre estaba en una casa y ella le habló por megáfono con voz calmada hasta que entregó el rifle.

Vrieze no se amilanó, ni siquiera ante las tareas más difíciles. “Disfruto mucho con mi trabajo”, afirma. La gente llama a Vrieze o se presenta en su puerta. “La gente viene a mi casa porque tienen problemas o papeles del juzgado y no saben lo que significan”.

“Era valiosísima cuando trabajaba con niños víctimas y familias en crisis que habían sufrido grandes pérdidas”, dijo Prosser, pero añadió que “Gracie decía lo que pensaba y no era temerosa. Hacía preguntas cuando había que hacerlas”.

Lista para jubilarse

“Terry quería que dejara de trabajar hace un par de años”, dice de su marido. Comprendía el estrés que sufría”.

Se conocieron en México. Terry estaba de servicio en la frontera, en Yuma (Arizona). Tuvieron seis hijos: Alan, ahora en Denison; y Jennifer, Stephanie, Vanessa, Ana y Montserrat (que ahora tiene 11 años), todos en Storm Lake.

Ahora estarán encantados de ver más a Gracie. “Mis hijos se alegrarán de ver a mamá sin uniforme”, dice.

Hablando de uniformes, en sus 29 años y medio en el departamento, pasó por tres cambios de uniforme.

“Lo que más echaré de menos es estar con todos”, dijo Vrieze sobre su próxima jubilación.

Expresó su gratitud por las veces que la comunidad la apoyó. Mencionó la recaudación de fondos contra el cáncer. “Fue increíble”.

Y al final, las noches en vela, las llamadas telefónicas, la ayuda a la persona atrapada en el ascensor de Senior Housing, todo formaba parte del trabajo que amaba.

A principios de la década de 1990, Storm Lake estaba experimentando una gran afluencia de inmigrantes hispanos. Había falta de intérpretes y muy poco conocimiento de la cultura en español. Los agentes se enfrentaban a menudo a barreras lingüísticas con sus contactos en la calle. Muchos de nuestros residentes inmigraban a Storm Lake desde países donde había miedo, desconfianza y desconexión entre los ciudadanos y la policía. Esta falta de confianza y temor a menudo les hacía sentirse marginados. Algunos incluso sentían que no tenían acceso a la justicia. Las víctimas de delitos no los denunciaban porque no confiaban en la policía, o no sabían cómo denunciarlos, porque no hablaban el idioma. ‘Groundbreaker’ Gracie Vrieze retires from Storm Lake PD after 3 decades

After battling cancer, Covid, it’s time for family

Community Service Officer Gracie Vrieze wraps up her 29½-year career with the Storm Lake Police Department with a list of impressive accomplishments and the admiration of the Storm Lake community.

“Gracie was and is a groundbreaker,” says former Storm Lake Police Chief Mark Prosser, who hired her in 1993. Vrieze, 54, was the first community service officer and multilingual staff person employed by the police department and the city.

She was one of the first, if not the first, multilingual community service officers in the State of Iowa.

“Through her service, Gracie helped groom the community service officer program in such a fashion that it has been nationally recognized in print and video media for over two decades,” adds Prosser.

Health concerns have played into her decision to retire at this time, she said. “I had really wanted to make it at least 30 years.”

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006 and she fights back as the cancer reoccurs. Over the years she became known as an inspirational survivor.

In 2020 she was hospitalized with COVID-19 at St.

Luke’s in Sioux City. This was before any vaccines were available. “I was close to dying,” she told the Storm Lake Times Pilot. “I was in a coma and intubated.”

She had to battle side affects also. Even walking was a challenge. “I really wanted to work,” she says, but it would be several weeks until she was able to.

Vrieze had been working on the line at IBP when she applied for the CSO position. She had also been an interpreter at the hospital at the time.

As CSO, her major responsibility was interpreting for the Latino population, which involved about 300 families at the time. Among her other duties were helping with house watches, ambulance assists, funeral escorts, security in stores, parking tickets, abandoned vehicles and helping with community service in the schools.

But as it turned out, Gracie was thrust into some of the most serious, high profile and dangerous investigations the department handled, according to Prosser, “and she always responded with grace, with professionalism and with dignity.”

She was instrumental in a counterfeiting case, which brought the Secret Service to town.

“I remember some of the tragic ones,” said Vrieze. She mentioned the fire that took the lives of two young children and their uncle at Vista Estates Mobile Home Park in 1996. She looks back sadly at the incident in which a 17-year-old drowned.

When Vrieze was the only person in the department who spoke Spanish, it fell on her to convince a man to drop his gun “Like in the movies,” she told a gathering at Our Place in 2019. The man was in a house and she spoke to him over a megaphone in a calm voice until he gave up his rifle.

Vrieze was not daunted, even by the more challenging tasks.

“I really enjoy my job,” she said.

People call Vrieze or show up at her door. “People come to my house because they have problems or court papers and they don’t know what they mean.”

“She was priceless when working with children victims and families going through crisis who had suffered great loss,”

said Prosser, but he added that, “Gracie spoke her mind and was no pushover. She asked questions when questions needed to be asked.”

Ready to retire

“Terry wanted me to quit working a couple years ago,” she says of her husband. He understood the stress she was under.

The two met in Mexico. Terry was with the service stationed on the border at Yuma, Ariz. They went on to have six children: Alan, now in Denison; and Jennifer, Stephanie, Vanessa, Ana and Montserrat (who’s now 11), all in Storm Lake.

They’ll be happy to see more of Gracie now. “My kids will be happy to see mom not in uniform,” she says. Speaking of uniforms, in her 29½ years with the department, she went through three uniform changes.

“What I’ll miss most is being with everybody,” said Vrieze of her upcoming retirement.

She expressed gratitude for the times the community rallied behind her. She mentioned cancer fundraisers. “It was amazing.”

And in the end, her late nights, the phone calls, the assistance to the person trapped in the elevator at Senior Housing, it was all part of the job she loved.

“I always like to help people,” she says. “It makes me feel good inside.”

In the early 1990s, Storm Lake was experiencing a large influx of Hispanic immigrants. There was a lack of interpreters and very little knowledge about the Spanish culture. Officers often faced language barriers with contacts on the streets. Many of our residents were immigrating to Storm Lake from countries where there was fear, distrust and a disconnect between the citizens and the police. This lack of trust and fear often made them feel marginalized. Some even felt they had no access to justice. Crime victims would not report crimes because they didn’t trust the police, or they didn’t know how to report, because they didn’t speak the language. This often led to more victimization and more criminal activity, none of which were reported.

Chief Mark Prosser was forward thinking enough to recognize this problem and formulated Gracie’s Community Service Officer position in an effort to help build trust between the police and the community. Since the program was new, there was no blueprint, playbook or manual on how to achieve the goal. Gracie’s work and dedication with the SLPD community outreach efforts has paved the way to what is now a very successful community policing model for diverse communities. I believe her work has made Storm Lake a safer community.

Building community trust takes a lot of time and a lot of effort. It’s not a 9-to-5 job. When Gracie first started, she was one of the only Spanish interpreters in the area. She was called at all hours of the night to assist with interpretation, not just from the SLPD, but from the hospital and other various organizations. It would be shocking to know how many babies she has helped deliver in the past 29 years. She still takes calls at home, at all hours, for all kinds of reasons. It’s amazing, how many police reports have been initiated from a resident making a phone call to Gracie.

I have had the privilege and honor of working with Gracie for the past 29 years. She’s taught me a lot about Spanish traditions and culture. She has also been instrumental in helping me learn how to speak Spanish. She’s an amazing human, who has made many positive impacts on many lives. I have nothing but respect for her.

Local barber stylist Nancy Avila made waves this past weekend in the historic downtown area of Marshalltown with the grand opening of her new shop, One Love Barbershop.

The grand opening of the new barbershop, located at 16 N. 1st Ave., was the culmination of a longtime dream for Avila with the new spot finally providing the Marshalltown native a permanent home for her professional skills.

“At first, it was hard,” Avila said. “Guys would be like, ‘I never had a girl cut my hair. I don’t want to have a girl cutting my hair.’ I got my feelings hurt along the way.”

Despite this, Avila soldiered on, gradually building relationships and bonds with clients who now flock to her.

“I’m glad that was all thrown at me at one point, because that made me who I am,” she said. “As long as they walk out of here, feeling themselves walking out… that’s what makes me take pride in my work.”

You know, being a girl, you don’t see a lot of female barbers,” Avila said, describing the ‘aha moment’ she had once she opened the shop. “It’s here now, and I’m just like, damn, this is me. This is mine. It’s a really good feeling. Ten months ago I was manifesting my own crew — (now) I’m gonna have my own barber shop.”

Yet, as Avila admits, the path to her current situation was not one without bumps and hurdles along the way for the young entrepreneur.

Having been a hairstylist at different salons in and around the Marshalltown area, Avila wanted to be able to cut all types and styles of hair for her diverse clientele.

“I didn’t want to be the person that didn’t know how to do it,” Avila said. “So I took it to another level.”

This pursuit of mastery in her craft led to her enrolling and graduating from barber school, expanding her hairdressing repertoire and adding to her previous education and experience in cosmetology.

Now, with her own place and two other barbers planning to work alongside her, she hopes to create something of an inclusive, easeful environment at the new establishment.

“You walk into a barber shop sometimes, and for a female, it’s kind of uncomfortable being a female walking into a male barber shop,” Avila said. “I want to be okay with my male clientele and okay with the female part, where they feel comfortable bringing the kids in, where girls feel comfortable having their boyfriend walk in.”

So far, it has been all positive for the new business owner since the grand opening, especially considering the outpouring of support she has already received from the community. “It’s going amazing,” Avila said. “I never expected so much support, and the community, people that came out just to see and to be here, it’s nice.”

Tullpa Restaurant in Des Moines is savoring its grand opening thanks to help freshly served from the Evelyn K Davis Center

Des Moines, IA - Des Moines residents can feast on authentic Peruvian, Ecuadorian, and Colombian food at Tullpa Restaurant on Merle Hay Road. Founder Gloria Henriquez turned up the heat and launched Tullpa in early January 2023.

“It’s a fusion cuisine. We are trying to fuse a little from here, a little from there,” Gloria said. “Everyday the sales are going little by little bit up, so people are starting to notice our restaurant, our sign, our social medias.”

Gloria relocated to Iowa from New York four years ago. As the previous general manager for a fast-food company, Gloria had a lot of experience in the restaurant industry. It wasn’t until her move to Iowa, however, that producing a restaurant herself seemed achievable.

“I thought it [her dream] was something probably too big. It’s a big decision, you know; you have to prepare yourself with a lot of stuff. But then when I came here, I started to work with different restaurants, and I was like, ‘Maybe I will consider to open my own restaurant’,” Gloria said.

Gloria turned to the Evelyn K Davis Center (EKDC) to stir up her dream. She knew the nonprofit business would provide the right ingredients to achieve this feat.

“I was looking for coaching and support at that moment and they really did a lot for me. They worked with me; they introduced me with somebody who can do one-on-one with me,” Gloria said.

Gloria was partnered with a business coach who walked her through the journey, including conducting research and explaining the business formation process. In addition, Gloria took advantage of additional classes being offered at the EKDC, like computer skills for small businesses. “I never had a center like that in New York - where you can go and interact with somebody who can coach you and guide you in a different aspect, even though you are doing business or preparing yourself for something else. And I think that’s a huge thing – to have that type of community support in Des Moines,” Gloria said.

Gloria reached out to the EKDC because of its support for minorities. Although her original intent was to gain the knowledge to start a business, Gloria walked away with credit help, financial assistance, and an increased network.

“I always feel like it’s a community center working for us - for the small minorities or for whoever needs help. It’s like you go there, and they have a lot of different programs from small business solutions to even if you need help to prepare yourself with interviews,” Gloria said. Like the EKDC, Tullpa exists to serve the citizens of Des Moines. Gloria emphasizes that her restaurant is a welcoming place for all ages and ethnicities.

“The Latino population in Iowa is growing, but also at the same time, I see the acceptance from all the neighborhood and the community of the Latino food,” Gloria said. ““My vision is to see my restaurant go to the next level. You know, be well known in the area where people can come and have a meal, have a good time. We want to make sure we keep that family environment.”

Gloria says her favorite Tullpa dishes include any with fish – particularly the Mojara Frita. Tullpa even hired a chef who moved to the United States 2 months ago, full of fresh recipes and authentic taste.

Currently, there are around 12 staff members in Tullpa’s kitchen, but Tullpa is looking to expand this number as sales continue to increase.

The EKDC is proud to have helped serve Gloria success.

“I’ve been very grateful with what the Evelyn K Davis Center did for me, and I always feel like they do have a lot of resources and they offer you a lot of support. And that, for a small business owner, it means a lot,” Gloria said.

Second Leadership QC cohort announced

Janessa Calderon, executive director of the Greater Quad Cities Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, is one of the participants.

Quad Cities- We’re bringing the best and the brightest of the nonprofit and business community together. Their charge is to see how we can work together to reimagine the role of businesses affecting change in the Quad Cities, as well as have more ownership of what success looks like for our region, both from a business perspective and from the need to address social issues.

The Quad Cities Chamber’s second cohort of the ninemonth Leadership QC program started this week. These 16 members are already leaders in business, government and nonprofit organizations.

“The purpose of Leadership QC is to create a space for community-minded individuals to come together to learn about corporate social responsibility and to harness their existing leadership toward common goals in our com-

munity,” said LaDrina Wilson, CEO of the Quad Cities Chamber. “The goal is that people learn a little bit about themselves, but also get connected to what it truly means to be a regional thinker and a regional leader.”

Charla Hollowell, Chief Financial Officer for Vera French Community Mental Health Center, hopes to gain a better understanding of the community vision for the area and connection to those who would like to move that vision forward. “I would very much like to gain insight and connections to groups I may not interact with on a daily basis, and work together to make our region the best it can be for current residents, as well as future generations,” said Hollowell.

Randall Goblirsch, Director of Enrollment Communications and Marketing at St. Ambrose University, has lived in the Quad Cities for nearly 12 years, moving here as an out-of-state transplant. During this time Goblirisch experienced so much of what makes this region special.

“Over the years, I’ve developed a deep commitment to

my community. I hope to leverage my experience from the Leadership QC program to step into the next phase of investing my time and my talents to further improve the area I’m proud to (but never thought I would!) call home,” Goblirsch said.

“Leadership development is a continual process,” said Kendra Schaapveld, Project Director for Equus Workforce Solutions. “I strive to be a servant leader. This involves staying at the forefront of community needs, emerging research, identifying new resources, strategizing and networking with colleagues to improve services for workforce programming. I hope to gain new relationships to troubleshoot employee needs, to strategize business services’ objectives and to develop our youth program as they embark on career pathways.”

We can’t wait to see how this next cohort will drive change in the future as our region’s leaders.

Source Song Festival is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Juan Carlos Mendoza to the inaugural position of Education Director

Dr. Juan Carlos Mendoza, Tenor, is a native of Muscatine, IA. Over the past decade, he has made a name for himself as a soloist, choral singer, and educator.

Based in Sioux Falls, Dr. Mendoza is currently an Assistant Professor of Voice and Opera at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion and holds degrees from the University of Iowa and The Juilliard School. He is an active performer, educator, and scholar, and his premiere recording, “Finding a Voice” (MSR Classics MS1772), features Mexican Song Cycles after 1920. Source Song Festival’s Artistic Director Clara Osowski says, “Dr. Mendoza’s appointment to Education Director will enhance Source’s strong educational presence and scholarship in both underrepresented song repertoire and the continuance of research and scholarship. We are so fortunate to have him join our community, and this is a great way to begin the celebration of our 10th Anniversary Season.”

Some of Dr. Mendoza’s stage roles include the dual roles of Aarón/Javier in the world premiere of Tienda by Reinaldo Moya, Freddy in My Fair Lady, and Tigranes in Cavalli’s La Doriclea. Concert repertoire includes Tenor Soloist in The Messiah (Handel), Requiem (Mozart), Magnificat (Bach), Bolts of Melody (Ford), Featured

soloist in Navidad Nuestra (Ramirez) and Tenor Evangelist in Passio (Pärt). As a choral performer, Dr. Mendoza has sung with ensembles such as Grant Park Music Festival Chorus, Lyric Opera of Chicago Chorus, and Border CrosSing. As a recitalist, he has performed throughout the US, regularly performing Spanish-language music of Manuel M. Ponce, Salvador Moreno, and Carlos Guastavino. He premiered Masefield Songs, a song cycle for Tenor and Piano on poems of John Masefield, by composer Thomas F. Savoy. Mendoza received a Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Arts degree from The University of Iowa, studying under John Muriello, Bachelor of Music degree from The Juilliard School, studying under W. Exclusive interview: Aline Mayagoitia Queen Katherine Howard in SIX The Musical at the Des Moines Civic Center

Hola Iowa had an exclusive interview with Aline Mayagoitia one of the performers in SIX The Musical that will be performing at the Des Moines Civic Center February 7-19.

Hola Aline, please tell me your full name, where you are from, and what character you play in SIX The Musical.

My name is Aline Mayagoitia I am from Mexico City originally, but I did a little bit of school in Austin, Texas. And now I play Katherine Howard in SIX The Musical.

SIX The Musical is a pop musical about the Six wives of Henry VIII kind of reincarnated as these fabulous pop Queens that tell you their story from their point of view. So, King Henry VIII is nowhere in the show. And they talk about how some of them were divorced, some of them were beheaded by him and the way all of their marriages and mistreatments by him interlocked but in this really funny way with the best music and so much dancing. And the best lighting you have ever seen.

Growing up, what were some of the artists that influenced you?

I am a crazy musical theater nerd, obviously. I am obsessed with Bernadette Peters since I was a child but honestly, for this show, it feels a lot like I am doing like Thalia and obviously like Selena and like my Belinda era from when I was a kid, you know, with my braids.

It’s like all these pop Queens, I think growing up in Mexico, I had a little different upbringing because Britney Spears was not as big of a deal for me as Thalia was. These are my queen inspirations.

What would you say to the young audience out there that aspires to the same dreams as you?

For anyone interested in pursuing a career in musical theater in particular, the best thing you can do is to train as much as you can when you are young, particularly in dance training. Even if you don’t want to be a dancer, dance training helps with everything. It just helps you stand on stage better and even in a show like SIX where we’re mainly just singing and acting but surprise we dance the entire show so it’s really a triple threat experience more than anyone thinks when you first see SIX The Musical, so yes, training as much as you can and particularly having really good habits about vocal health. Making yourself warm up every day when you are young. Because sometimes when you are young you don’t have to but that’s when you install the habit so once you doing eight shows a week which it’s really taxing you have the discipline to do it.

What can we expect going to see SIX at the Des Moines Civic Center?

What you can expect to see in SIX The Musical is, first of all, the show is only 85 minutes, which we love. So, go to the bathroom before because you gonna want to stay through the whole thing. Ok? So, you come in and we are going to start telling you the stories of these Queens with the coolest lighting you have ever seen and it is so much energy. Honestly, the show

is very funny in a way that we compete against each other because it is framed like the competition of which wife had it the worst.

So, that’s a really fun part, I think. So, the audience can be like oh, I like her more or I think she had it worse. And then at the end, there is a really fun twist about how it all went down. So, yes, you will have a really great time. If you have any nieces or grandchildren or kids, boys and girls from ages 7 to 77 that’s the best age for SIX The Musical. Everyone will love it.

So if you are someone who helps you see the subtitles in English, look on the dmpa.org website for the days there are open captions because you can read along so you don’t miss the story and the jokes. The music is great, and the lighting is amazing. It’s like a Beyoncé concert, seriously. And you will leave happy about this story where we women really talk about what it is to be women and we claim our power through these historical figures, so you all are going to have a great time.
