Dylan Matthews de Vox, analiza la gama de opinión pública sobre inmigración en el artículo titulado, “Encuestas demuestran que en lo que se trata de inmigración estadounidenses apoyan más a los demócratas que a Donald Trump.” Evaluando opiniones de estadounidenses en la gama de políticas incluyendo el plan de inmigración radical de la Casa Blanca del Presidente Trump, Matthews dice: …mientras que apoyo para los DREAMers es popular entre el público estadounidense, el muro fronterizo y reducir niveles de inmigración no son ideas populares. In Iowa and Across America, Public is Strongly ProImmigrant and Opposed to Trump’s Nativist Agenda By Frank Sharry When it comes to immigration, President Trump and fellow hardliners are on the wrong side of American public opinion, as new analysis and new Iowa polling each make clear. At Vox, Dylan Matthews analyzes a range of immigration public opinion in a piece titled, “Polls Show Americans are Closer to Democrats than Donald Trump on Immigration.” Assessing Americans’ opinions on a range of the policies including President Trump’s radical White House immigration plan, Matthews writes: ...while relief for DREAMers is wildly popular with the American public, a border wall and reducing immigration levels are not. As you might imagine, most Americans don’t have especially detailed views on specific questions of immigration policy, like “should we end the diversity visa lottery” or “should we change the standards for family sponsorship,” and polling on those kinds of specifics is all over the place. But on the big questions, the prevailing public sentiment is reasonably clear: People want relief for DREAMers. They don’t want a border wall. And they want immigration levels kept constant or increased, not lowered. It’s totally in line with public sentiment for Democrats and pro-immigration Republicans in Congress to insist on a deal that helps DREAMers without building a wall or cracking down on immigration. ...When considering both public opinion and the policy merits, Democrats and pro-

immigrant Republicans are on very solid ground in opposing a deal that enacts a large cut in legal immigration. Meanwhile, the latest installment of the highly respected and non-partisan Iowa Poll, conducted for the Des Moines Register and Mediacom by Selzer & Co, finds that even in Trump-leaning Iowa, public sentiment on key immigration questions is opposed to Trump’s hardline view. As the Des Moines Register recaps, Iowa public opinion is overwhelmingly pro-Dreamer; strongly pro-citizenship for the 11 million; and broadly against the proposed border wall: Iowans overwhelmingly support citizenship for undocumented immigrants — and not just the so-called Dreamers. Sixty-five percent of respondents in the latest Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll call a pathway to citizenship for all undocumented workers currently living in the country “a worthy goal.” The consensus is stronger when it comes to young people brought to the country illegally by their parents. Eighty-one percent of Iowans say eventually extending citizenship to “Dreamers” — the group until recently protected by the executive action known as DACA — is a worthy goal. ...Support for legal status up to and including citizenship for DACA recipients is broad and deep in Iowa, regardless of the state’s typical political and cultural divides. Ninety-three percent of Democrats, 80 percent of independents and 74 percent of Republicans believe citizenship is a worthwhile objective for DACA recipients. So do 86 percent of city dwellers and

It’s even strong among Iowans who say they’ll vote to reelect Trump in 2020: 64 percent believe a pathway to citizenship is a worthy goal for people previously covered by DACA. Iowa Latino Day on the Hill was a great success with over 300 attendees The Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs held the very first Latino Day on the Hill on Thursday, January 25, 2018, reaching their goal of serving as a bridge to connect Iowa’s Latino community with the Capitol. The Commission is extremely grateful and excited for the high turnout (300+) from Iowa’s Latino community. Latinos, especially youth from Al Exito (an Iowa Human Rights Youth Chapter), Iowa colleges and universities, and local non-profit organizations, were able to directly hear from our governor, state representatives, educators and Latino role models.

We are thankful to Governor Reynolds who opened the event with a warm welcome and encouraged those in attendance to be civically engaged. For the Latino youth, it was a great way to get an education outside the classroom and engage with important policy makers directly and hear from. The first step in understanding one another is engaging in a meaningful dialog. Students from the Des Moines Area Community College-Urban Campus said “Thank you for your work on the Latino Day on the Hill, we had a great experience and even stayed after to talk with representatives on our own. Thank you for offering

this opportunity- it was a great way to provide education outside the classroom, off campus, and engage in our local community and with state politicians.” Perhaps one day, this generation will volunteer to serve on the Commission, run for office or open a business in Iowa. But first, they will need to understand how laws and regulations will impact their lives and livelihoods. The Commission is most concerned with setting aside partisan differences and focusing on policies to improve Iowa together. “This event empowered me and just motivated me to continue making the difference

little by little with ALL youth around me” Norma Robles from Marshalltown stated. Coming out of this event, the Commission encourages all Iowans to be a voice in their communities, volunteer and give back, and learn how best to get involved. Día Latino en el Capitolio de Iowa fue un gran éxito con más de 300 asistentes La Comisión de Asuntos Latinos de Iowa tuvo el primer Día Latino en el Capitolio el jueves 25 de enero del 2015, logrando su meta de servir como el puente que conecte la comunidad latina de Iowa con el Capitolio. La Comisión está agradecida y feliz con la alta participación (más de 300 personas) de la comunidad latina de Iowa. Latinos en especial los jóvenes de Al Éxito (Sección Juvenil de Derechos Humanos en Iowa), colegios y universidades de Iowa, y organizaciones no lucrativas locales, pudieron escuchar a la gobernadora Reynolds, representantes estatales, educadores y latinos ejemplares. Agradecemos a la gobernadora Reynolds quien abrió el evento con una cálida bienvenida e invitó a los participantes a involucrarse cívicamente. Para los jóvenes latinos esta fue una oportunidad de aprender fuera del aula de escuela y comunicarse con los legisladores y escuchar de ellos. El primer paso para entender de uno a otro es participar en el diálogo. Restaurante Arely’s ofrece antojitos mexicanos únicos así como platillos tradicionales Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El invierno está en plena temporada. Durante estos días depresivos y grises un poco de color puede levantar el espíritu. Si usted se siente que necesita un poco de animo vaya a Arely’s Restaurant and Ice Cream en Muscatine, IA seguro encontrará un antojito que le alegrará el día.. Los dueños de Arely’s son Reyna y Francisco Baltazar. Ellos abrieron su negocio en abril del 2017. “Siempre me ha gustado vender comida,” Reyna dijo. “Eso me motivó. Tener algo propio.” Ella también explicó que al principio su esposo no estaba seguro si quería lanzar el negocio, pero después de un rato le gustó la idea y ellos tomaron el riesgo. El Sr. Baltazar compartió que cuando ellos abrieron su negocio su mayor dificultad era atraer la gente. “Es difícil atraer la gente,” el Sr. Baltazar dijo. “La gente está acostumbrada a comer en ciertos restaurantes y cuando ven algo nuevo piensan antes de probarlo.” Como Arely’s vende helados, muchos clientes suponen que este es un negocio que solo vende helados, pero este restaurante nuevo tiene mucho que ofrecer. Baltazar dijo. “Tenemos que trabajar y levantarlas. Me encanta el agua de piña y en el verano ellos tienen aguas frescas de pepino y sandia que también me encantan.” El Sr. Baltazar asegura que ellos solamente usan frutas frescas para sus aguas. “Antojitos mexicanos que vendemos están frescos y naturales,” el Sr. Baltazar dijo invitando a todo el mundo a Arely’s. “Hacemos todo con ingredientes frescos, frutas frescas. Arely’s Restaurant in Muscatine features unique Mexican snacks as well as traditional dishes By Anastassia Zvoryguina Winter is in full swing. During those depressive and grey days, a splash of color and fresh food can lift up the spirit. If you feel like you need a pick me up on a gloomy day head out to Arely’s Restaurant and Ice Cream, located in Muscatine, IA. The owners of Arely’s are Reyna and Francisco Baltazar. They opened their business in April of 2017. “I always liked selling food,” Reyna said. “That was my motivation. To own something ourselves” She also explained that her husband was not on board with this venture at first, but after a while he liked the idea and they took the risk. Mr. Baltazar shared that when they opened their business their biggest struggle was bringing people in. “It is hard to get people to come,” Mr. Baltazar said. “People are used to eating at certain restaurants and when they see something new they think it over before trying it. Since Arely’s sells ice creams, many customers assumed it was just an ice cream parlor, but this new restaurant has a lot more to offer. They sell ice creams, mangonadas, tacos and gorditas and quite a few snacks that will make you crave to try more. “We sell a lot of aguas frescas,” Mrs. Baltazar said. “People love it. And tacos and mangonadas.” Mr. Baltazar explained that it was hard to start a business because they did not have a lot of knowledge. They did do a little research trying foods and scouting the internet in search of current trends in the food industry. After recommendation they went to talk to Dan Kim from Community CPA, who helped them to launch their business. “They [employees from Community CPA] are very friendly and we trust them,” Mr. Baltazar shared his experience of working with Community CPA. “We never had our own business and they gave us advice about what we should and shouldn’t do and what is good for us.” The couple that runs Arely’s is thankful to Community CPA for all the help they received from them. At this point Reyna and Francisco own and run the business with a little help from their three daughters. The girls are 11, 9 and 6 years old. Mrs. Baltazar explained laughing that they get a little bored when they don’t have customers coming in, but they help when customers are there. Even though it is hard, the couple keeps on working. Mrs. Baltazar explained that sometimes when business is slow she feels worried and doubts their decision of opening the restaurant. “Our daughters [motivate us],” Mrs. Baltazar said. “We have to work and raise them. Yes, we feel discouraged sometimes, but we overcome it and move ahead.”

The couple have a lot of plans they would like to implement so they could grow their business. They are contemplating new menu items and selling food during different festivals during summer. More than anything they are inviting everyone to come out and try Arely’s. The tropical feel, and colors will brighten any grey winter day and their food will keep you coming back for more no matter what season is out there. “Every time I’m in Muscatine I try to stop by for a large cup of Agua Fresca,” Tar Macias, Hola America director, said. “You can taste they use fresh fruit and not the flavor powder that some places use. My favorite flavor is Pineapple and in the summer they have cucumber and watermelon Aguas Frescas which I also love.” Mr. Baltazar assures us that they only use fresh fruit for his Aguas Frescas. “Mexican snacks we sell here are natural and fresh,” Mr. Baltazar said inviting everyone to try Arely’s. “We make everything with fresh ingredients, fresh fruit. Norma Dorado-Robles corresponde el apoyo que ella recibió con los jóvenes de Marshalltown High School Norma Dorado-Robles se apresura a agradecer al personal de la escuela preparatoria Marshalltown y a sus compañeros de clase, por ayudarla en la escuela cuando, en ese momento, tenía habilidades limitadas en el idioma inglés. Su mejor manera de agradecerles ahora, es inspirando a los estudiantes actuales. Dorado-Robles se graduó en 2009 de la preparatoria Marshalltown y se tituló del Colegio Comunitario de Marshalltown y de la Universidad Buena Vista. Ahora trabaja como especialista en programas juveniles 4-H (Las cuatro H se refieren a Head, Heart, Hands, and Health = Cabeza -entendimiento-, Corazón, Manos y Salud) con la Extensión de la Universidad Estatal de Iowa para los condados de Marshall, Tama y Benton. Ella agradece al personal actual de la preparatoria Marshalltown, Deb Holsapple y Dan Terrones y al ex miembro del personal April Bryant, quienes en conjunto no le permitieron que utilizara esto como una excusa. “Vieron mi potencial y siempre estaban empujándome para retarme a mí misma”, dijo Norma. Holsapple, quien es la directora asociada de la preparatoria Marshalltown, dijo que fue la dedicación de Norma lo que la llevó al éxito. “Norma era una jovencita divertida y alegre, que vino a MHS sin hablar inglés”, dijo Holsapple. “Ella sabía que

iba a hacer de Marshalltown su hogar, lo que significaba que para que tuviera éxito, tenía que aprender inglés e ir a la universidad. Ella era una fuerte autodidacta que asumió la responsabilidad de sí misma y se preparó para el éxito en el futuro “. Norma Dorado-Robles Marshalltown HS graduate pays it forward to youth Norma Dorado-Robles is quick to thank Marshalltown High School staff and her fellow classmates at that time for helping her through school when she had limited English language skills. Her best way to thank them now is by inspiring current students. Dorado-Robles is a 2009 MHS graduate and went on to earn degrees from Marshalltown Community College and Buena Vista University. She now works as a 4-H youth program specialist with Iowa State University Extension for Marshall, Tama and Benton counties. Arriving in Marshalltown with her family from Guadalajara, Mexico in 2005, Dorado-Robles was a 15-year-old freshman at MHS who would get frustrated that

she couldn’t express herself the way she wanted with her limited English skills. She credits current MHS staff Deb Holsapple and Dan Terrones and former staff member April Bryant, who collectively didn’t let her settle for that as an excuse. “They saw my potential and were always pushing me to challenge myself,” she said. Holsapple, who is associate principal at MHS, said it was Norma’s dedication that led her to success. “Norma was a fun, spirited young lady, who came to MHS without speaking English,” Holsapple said. “She knew that she was going to make Marshalltown her home which meant that for her to be successful, she had to learn English and to go on to college. She was a strong self-directed learner

who took responsibility for herself and set herself up for success in the future.” Dorado-Robles now works in the schools in various ways through her job and volunteer efforts including the 4-H Club at MHS, STEM Club at Woodbury Elementary School and Junior Achievement. She also worked with the Al Exito group at MHS years ago. The 4-H Club at MHS provides activities to students who are similar to her when she was in school. “I think the underrepresented kids in the school need to be heard and need to be exposed to different opportunities,” DoradoRobles said. Knowing first hand the impact of mentoring, it’s important for her to give back now

and to help guide youth in our community. “If you have a mentor and know there are people that care about you, you will be successful,” Dorado-Robles said. Norma’s main mentor years ago was former community member Joan Jaimes. When Dorado-Robles asked Jaimes how she could repay her for her help, Jaimes gave her some important advice. “She said I could pay her back by going back to my community and doing the same thing she did for me,” Dorado-Robles said. “And that’s what I did.”

Legacy -Pro Boxing in Davenport attracts over 800 fans Alien Boi Boxing and Calkins Sports Productions have raised the bar with their latest show Legacy at the River Center that attracted over 800 boxing fans last Saturday night. It was one of the better cards that this promotions duo has put together to date. The highlights of the night were the bouts by Limberth “EL Gallito” Ponce and “Smokin” Joe Perez which they both won by KO in the 2nd and 4th round respectively. Abraham Flores, originally from East Moline now residing in Dallas, won his debut via 1st round KO also. A

very emotional Flores, who has faced a lot of adversity to finally become a rising star in the QC Boxing scene, thanked the crowd for their support. Jesse Gomez from Alien Boi Boxing and Clint Calkins from Calkins Sports Production now have the great task of raising the bar once again for their May 2018 show. Legacy - Boxeo en Davenport atrae a más de 800 fanáticos del boxeo local Alien Boi Boxing y Calkins Sports Productions sobrepasaron las expectativas con su último show de boxeo profesional Legacy en el River Center en Davenport, el cual atrajo a más de 800 fanáticos del boxeo a una de las mejores carteleras que estos promotores han creado hasta la fecha.
