AROUND IOWA Woman that ran over girl for being “a Mexican” has charges suspended while awaiting competency evaluation By Tar Macias The morning of December 30th Nicole Poole Franklin, 42, the woman that ran over a 14 year-old girl in Clive, IA for being “a Mexican”, was scheduled for her preliminary hearing on the first count of attempted murder hearing, her lawyer, Matthew Sheely asked for a psychiatric evaluation to determine if she is mentally competent. Sheely said Franklin is suffering from a mental disorder and is incompetent to stand trial. Senior Polk County District Court Judge Karen Romano granted the request for a competency evaluation claiming there is probable cause. On December 9, shortly before 5pm, Natalia Miranda a 14 year old girl was
walking on the sidewalk on her way to an activity at Indian Hills Jr. High School in Clive, IA. A vehicle left the roadway and ran the girl over. She suffered numerous injuries. The driver and vehicle left the scene without rendering aid to the girl. At that time it appeared to be a hit and run accident. The Clive Police Department identified the driver of the suspect vehicle as Nicole Marie Poole Franklin, 42, of Des Moines. Detectives interviewed her in the Polk County Jail, where she was being held on other charges. During the interview Franklin not only admitted to being the driver of the car that struck this girl, but also that she had done so intentionally. Franklin told investigators that she ran the girl over because she was, in her words, “a Mexican”.
She went on to make a number of derogatory statements about Latinos to the investigators. Franklin was charged with Attempted Murder. Joe Henry the president of the League of United Latinamerican Citizens Des Moines council 307 had this to say “this type of hateful behavior can be traced back to Trump and his supporters who have spread falsehoods and hate mongering.” “We are demanding Justice for Natalia. As part of that effort we have started to put pressure on public officials through the media, we have started a petition, and now we are going to start sending letters to the South District Court of Iowa.” He added.

Hispanohablantes tendrán sitios satélite de caucus bilingüe en Des Moines y Muscatine este 3 de febrero Entre los casi 100 caucus satélites aprobados por el partido Demócrata de Iowa, 12 se adaptarán a las necesidades culturales y lingüísticas de las diferentes poblaciones. La política es algo personal para estas latinas que participarán en su primer caucus Por Kenia Calderon Ceron
Karla Rangel participará en su primer caucus el 3 de febrero
En la noche del 3 de febrero de 2020, los habitantes de Iowa serán los primeros en la nación en elegir a su candidato presidencial. A sólo tres semanas de las asambleas comunitarias electorales de Iowa (los Caucus), las campañas están impacientes por ver posiblemente la mayor participación hasta el momento. Aparte de las encuestas, los candidatos presidenciales deben agregar esto a su lista de preocupaciones, ¿se presentarán los latinos y se alinearán con ellos en los caucus el 3 de febrero? Erika Contreras, Vanessa Marcano-Kelly, Karla Rangel y Lilián Sánchez lo harán. Estas cuatro latinas participarán por primera vez y están ansiosas por ejercer su derecho como ciudadanas de los Estados Unidos. Agobiadas por la emoción, ellas expresan abiertamente lo mucho que desean aprender del proceso y su elección. “La política es personal, ya sea que uno esté activo o no, su vida está de por medio. Para mí, el haber sido anteriormente indocumentada y ahora tener este privilegio es una mayor responsabilidad para presentarme”, afirmó Sánchez. En el 2016, Rangel asistió como observador al caucus de su hermana. Esta vez, ella volverá ahora como participante con orgullo como ciudadana recién naturalizada. También siente el peso de la responsabilidad sobre sus hombros. Admitió: “Aunque investigues y prestes atención, no estás cien por ciento segura de tomar la decisión correcta y eso me pone nerviosa. Quiero tomar la decisión correcta para mi comunidad”. Marcano-Kelly, por otro lado, está cautelosamente optimista. Tanto es así que tomó un rol de liderazgo activo dentro de la campaña de Bernie Sanders. “Me estoy involucrando totalmente en el proceso, sabiendo que puede ser una noche larga”, se rió. Contreras es la más joven y la única estadounidense nacida entre el grupo. Actualmente tiene 17 años y se unirá a su padre en su caucus. A una corta edad, se dio cuenta de lo importante que era para ella el compromiso cívico. Todo ciudadano estadounidense que cumpla 18 años antes de las próximas elecciones generales es elegible para participar en el caucus. Este grupo de latinas ejemplares dejó muy claro que su previa falta de estatus legal o de edad no les impedía participar en el proceso político. La mayoría de ellas han observado un caucus previamente, o participado en llamadas telefónicas y tocando puertas en campañas electorales. Marcano-Kelly fue organizadora en su país natal, Venezuela, y continuó su trabajo en Iowa. Reflexionaba, “no se puede votar a alguien para que ocupe un cargo y esperar que cumpla sus promesas. Es la gente la que hace que la democracia se haga realidad. Hay que subirse las mangas y ponerse a trabajar”.
Durante el último par de meses, ella se obligó a salir de su zona de confort para ir a tocar puertas y hacer que otros se comprometieran a reunirse en el caucus con ella. Se lamenta de que “los inmigrantes son menospreciados incluso por todo el trabajo duro que hacen por un futuro mejor en lugar de ser bien recibidos”. Tanto Marcano-Kelly como Sánchez están preocupadas por las desigualdades que enfrenta la comunidad latina y cómo éstas están interconectadas. Marcano-Kelly advierte que “esta enorme desigualdad (económica) que se ha apoderado de los Estados Unidos es muy peligrosa y es una de las marcas de retroceso de un país”. En el caso de Rangel, ella está preocupada por el calentamiento global, la automatización de los trabajos y los impuestos. Ella describió, “el calentamiento global es un problema enorme que todo el mundo puede ver. Estamos en enero en este momento y va a ser de 55 grados. He estado viviendo en Iowa por demasiado tiempo como para saber que esto no es normal”. Todas, con la excepción de Marcano-Kelly, están todavía indecisas. Siguen investigando y asistiendo a eventos. Estas cuatro latinas esperan que la comunidad latina pueda superar el miedo a lo desconocido, hacer preguntas y participar en los caucus por primera vez. Politics are personal for these 1st time Caucus goers By Kenia Calderon Ceron

On the evening of February 3, 2020, Iowans will be first in the nation to choose their presidential nominee. Just three weeks away from the Iowa Caucus, campaigns are eager to see possibly the highest participation yet. Beyond the polls, presidential candidates should add this to their list of concerns, will Latinos show up and caucus for them on February 3? Erika Contreras, Vanessa Marcano-Kelly, Karla Rangel and Lilián Sánchez will. These four Latinas will be caucusing for the first time and are eager to exercise their right as U.S. citizens. Overwhelmed with excitement, they candidly express how anxious they are about the unknown, the process and their choice. “Politics is personal, whether you are active or not, your life is at stake. For me, having been formerly undocumented and now having the privilege is an added responsibility to show up,” Sánchez affirmed. In 2016, Rangel witnessed her sister caucus. This time, she will proudly return to participate as a newly naturalized citizen. She’s also feeling the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. She admitted, “Even though you do your research and listen, you cannot be 100 percent sure you’re making the right decision and that makes me nervous. I want to make the right choice for my community.” Marcano-Kelly on the other hand is cautiously optimistic. So much so that she took an active leadership role within the Bernie Sanders campaign. “I’m diving with both feet in and embracing the process knowing that it might be a long night,” she laughed. Contreras is the youngest and the only U.S. born among the group. She is currently 17 years old and will be caucusing with her dad. At a young age, she became aware of how important it was for her to be civically engaged. Any U.S. citizen who turns 18 before the next general election, is eligible to participate in the caucus. Contreras will be turning 18 in September of this year and is hopeful other eligible teenagers will be present too. This group of inspiring Latinas made it very clear that their previous lack of legal status or age didn’t stop them from being involved in the political process. Most of them have ether witness a caucus before, phone banked and knocked on doors for campaigns. Marcano-Kelly was an organizer in her native Venezuela and continued her work in Iowa. She reflected, “you can’t just vote someone into office and hope they will keep their promises. It is people who make democracy
happen. You have to roll up your sleeves and get to work.” During the last couple of months, she pushed herself out of her comfort zone to knock on doors and get others to commit to caucus with her. As immigrants, parents and daughters, too much is at stake for them. Their main concerns are immigration, global warming, taxes and inequalities. Contreras is highly concerned about the treatment of immigrants. She lamented, “immigrants are downgraded even for all the hard work they do for a better future instead of being welcomed.” Both Marcano-Kelly and Sánchez are concerned about the inequalities the Latino community faces and how these are interconnected. Marcano-Kelly warns, “this massive inequality that has taken a hold of the United States is very dangerous and it’s one of the marks of regression of a country.” In Rangel’s case, she is concerned about global warming, the automation of jobs and taxes. She described, “global warming is a huge problem that everyone can see. We’re in January right now and it’s going to be 55 degrees. I’ve lived in Iowa for too long to know this is not normal.” All, with the exception of Marcano-Kelly, are still undecided. They continue with their research and attending events. One thing is for sure, they will be present and hope the rest of the Latino community will be standing next to them. “Our voice as Latinos matter. We are the largest and fastest growing underrepresented group, not just in Iowa, but across the nation. It all starts here by showing up to caucus and showing we are a force to be reckoned with,” Sánchez emphasized. There are over 67,000 eligible Latino voters in Iowa and according to LULAC over 10,000 Latinos caucused in 2016, our highest turnout ever. These four Latinas hope the Latino community can overcome the fear of the unknown, ask questions and caucus for the first time. Caucus for those who can’t but will be affected by the results. Merenciana Paulus la única latina propietaria de un gimnasio de cross-fit en Des Moines Por Christina Fernandez-Morrow La única latina propietaria de un gimnasio de cross-fit en Des Moines aplica la buena alimentación y el acondicionamiento físico para mejorar su vida. La famosa estrella del baloncesto, Julius Irving, dijo una vez: “Si no haces lo mejor para tu cuerpo, te quedarás en el camino”. Merenciana “Meddy” Paulus, construyó una vida y un negocio en torno a este pensamiento. Meddy es la dueña principal de Black Collar Crossfit, cerca del centro de Des Moines. Inauguró su gimnasio en 2015 como Crossfit Akeso, pero en abril de 2019 los socios Nate Yoho y Thomas Oertli se sumaron al negocio y juntos lo renombraron a Black Collar Crossfit. El nombre es un homenaje al lado sur, donde se encuentra el gimnasio. El
área estaba compuesta en su mayoría por trabajadores del carbón antes de que se estableciera la ciudad y los residentes de esa zona eran conocidos por sus cuellos negros después de largas jornadas de trabajo en las minas. Durante una clase se enfoca en enseñar a sus miembros cómo realizar los movimientos sin lesionarse y los motiva a lo largo del entrenamiento. Después de las clases de la mañana, desayuna, se ocupa de las tareas administrativas y hace un entrenamiento personal individual. Más tarde, se da tiempo para almorzar, responder a los correos electrónicos, pagar las facturas, ocuparse de la publicidad y de los medios sociales del gimnasio, tener reuniones de personal y trabajar en la programación de las próximas clases. A menudo recoge a su hijo de diez años de la escuela y luego concluye la tarde en el gimnasio, supliendo a su entrenador en las clases nocturnas y visitando a más clientes de entrenamiento personal. Como la única latina dueña de un gimnasio de cross-fit en la ciudad, Meddy se responsabiliza de involucrarse en su comunidad. Ella participa en eventos como el Women’s Barbell Classic, una organización sin fines de lucro que brinda educación a las mujeres y les da la oportunidad de saber lo que significa estar físicamente fuerte y cómo eso impacta positivamente en sus vidas. El grupo también patrocina el Barbell Club que lleva el acondicionamiento físico a las estudiantes femeninas de East High School. El programa fomenta la confianza en las participantes, algo que Meddy se esfuerza por hacer en sí misma con regularidad. Esto lo hace apoyándose en un círculo de amigas para motivarlas, aconsejarlas y apoyarlas. “Tengo un gran grupo de mujeres que han sido importantes en mi vida personal y profesional. Me dan consejos y puntos de vista extraordinarios desde diferentes ángulos. Junto con mis socios, Nate y Thomas, me han orientado en cuanto a los riesgos calculados con mi negocio, que me han ayudado a crecer como persona y como empresaria. Fierce and Fit! Des Moines’ only Latina crossfit gym owner uses nutrition and fitness to improve lives By Christina Fernandez-Morrow Famed basketball star, Julius Irving once said, “If you don’t do what’s best for your body, you’re the one who comes up on the short end.” Merenciana “Meddy” Paulus, built a life and business around this thought. Meddy is the principal owner of Black Collar Crossfit near downtown Des Moines. She opened her gym in 2015 as Crossfit Akeso but in April of 2019 partners Nate Yoho and Thomas Oertli joined the business and together they rebranded into Black Collar Crossfit. The name is an homage to the southside, where the gym is located. The area was mostly coal workers before the city was established and the residents of that area were known for their

black collars after long days working in the mines. Meddy, a native of Des Moines, loves the diversity in the city. She has experience with all kinds of people from her days as a bartender and server, where she learned a lot of the skills she applies to her business. “Working in the service industry for so many years taught me patience, grit, sales and customer service. You’re constantly interacting with people, on their tough days or yours. I brought that mindset with me to the gym.” Helping people incorporate a healthy lifestyle is difficult. “People don’t see it as something worth paying for but when you demonstrate the value, they show up.” This is especially true when you consider all the services Meddy and her
team provide. Black Collar Fitness offers group crossfit classes starting at 5:15AM, along with personal training, 30-minute skill sessions, and personalized nutrition guidance. Coaches have extensive experience and often have backgrounds in kinesiology and sports medicine. Meddy and her partners select coaches based on a variety of factors, creating a team that can work with all abilities and practice their belief that fitness isn’t just for the elite or athletic, but rather a critical part of living an active life every day. Meddy’s own fitness journey started with running. Within the running community she met people who incorporated weightlifting and when she tried it, she liked the results she saw in her running. Today, while she no longer runs like she used to, Meddy spends nearly twelve hours a day dedicated to fitness in various forms. A typical day begins at 3AM with coffee and preparing her meal and supplies for a full day at the gym. She coaches the 5:15AM and 6:15AM classes. During a class she focuses on teaching her members how to perform the movements without injury and encourages them throughout the workout. After the morning classes, she has breakfast, takes care of administrative responsibilities, and does one-on-one personal training. Later in the day she finds time for lunch; answers emails; pays bills; takes care of marketing and social media for the gym; has staff meetings and works on programming for upcoming classes. She often picks up her ten-year-old son from school and then finishes the afternoon at the gym, subbing as coach for evening classes and seeing more personal training clients. She tries to be home by 6PM to enjoy dinner with her family and be in bed by 8:30PM. It’s a hectic schedule. “My goal for 2020 is to be more present in the moment. I don’t have a lot of time at home or with friends and family so when I am not at the gym, I want to be more in the moment and less thinking about work.” As the only Latina crossfit gym owner in the city, Meddy places a lot of responsibility on herself to be involved in her community. She participates in events like the Women’s Barbell Classic, a nonprofit that educates women and provides them with opportunities to see what it means to be
physically strong, and how that positively impacts their life. The group also sponsors the Barbell Club that brings fitness to female students at East High School. The program builds confidence in the participants, something Meddy works to build in herself on a regular basis. She does this by relying on a circle of female friends for motivation, advice, and support. “I have a great group of women who have been influential in my personal and professional life. They give me phenomenal advice and viewpoints from different angles. Along with my business partners, Nate and Thomas, they have guided me towards calculated risks with my business that have helped me grow as a person and business owner. Looking back on how far I’ve come is a great confidence booster.” When she needs an additional dose of confidence, she turns to her members. Black Collar Crossfit attracts members from all over the Des Moines area, all at different fitness levels. “In moments of doubt, I have had amazing reminders from my members of why I do this, and it re-focuses my energy so I can move past my challenges. I am grateful for those reminders. I never want to live with the what-ifs,” she says of tackling her challenges, many of which she feels come from within. “I was the biggest obstacle to getting further in my business. I allowed outside influences to affect my confidence and it created a lot of selfdoubt. It has taken a lot of reflection and time to realize all I have accomplished. I strive to celebrate positive outcomes and learn from the negative ones.” With the guidance of her business partners, members who motivate her, a formidable circle of inspirational women and a supportive husband who takes on a lot of extra duties so Meddy can pursue success in her business, she is well on her way to being a force to be reckoned with when it comes to health and fitness leaders in the Latinx community. Spanish-speakers will have bilingual satellite caucus sites in Des Moines and Muscatine, IA on February 3 Among the nearly 100 satellite caucus sites approved by the Iowa Democratic Party, 12 will accommodate cultural and language needs for different communities.
The People’s Caucus Forum Invites Presidential Candidates Ahead of 2020 Iowa Caucus Davenport - “The People’s Caucus” provides an opportunity for presidential candidates to share their views with community members in Eastern Iowa and to hear directly from the people about those matters most vital to them and their families. The “official” presidential debates—with questions from network personalities— too often ignore or overlook the concerns of everyday people. Our people’s caucus provides an opportunity to hear the voices of those who are often drowned out and permit them to have a direct conversation with the candidates. All candidates from both parties are invited. In order to make it more accessible to participate in the statewide community meetings for Democratic precandidates, also known as “caucuses”, the Iowa Democratic Party has approved bilingual satellite caucus locations in Des Moines and Muscatine, IA, where the process will take place in English and Spanish. The Des Moines satellite caucus will be located at the South Suburban YMCA at 401 E Army Post Rd in Des Moines, starting at 7:00pm and it will be open to any person eligible to exercise their right to vote in the United States. The Muscatine Spanish Caucus location is 1403 Park Avenue, Muscatine, Iowa (Muscatine Community College McAvoy Center) Doors open at 6:00 pm Caucus starts at 7:00 pm To participate in the caucuses, voters must be in line on Monday February 3rd by 7:00pm, or earlier, to ensure they can get in. Nobody will be able to enter any caucus after doors close at 7:00pm. “Satellite caucus goers do not need to pre-register to attend satellite caucuses that are in-state, open to the public, and start after 6pm CST,” said the Iowa Demo-
cratic Party in a press release. “Iowans who attend an in-state satellite caucus that begins at 7pm CST are able to change their registration at the satellite caucus site,” the statement said. The request for a satellite caucus came from volunteers who wanted greater linguistic inclusion so that Spanish-speaking Latinos could feel more comfortable participating in their native language. In addition, the possibility of having informal children’s activities at the site is being evaluated. In Muscatine on-site childcare will be provided. Caucus goers will be able to bring their children. The full satellite caucus list can be found here. “It is of utmost importance for people to understand the process well in their language and be encouraged to go to these caucuses,” said Vanessa Marcano-Kelly, one of the volunteers who submitted the satellite caucus application for Des Moines. “I read that, of about 60,000 registered Latino voters in Iowa, only around 2,000 participated in the 2016 caucuses. We must make the effort to expand engagement”. “Muscatine, Iowa has one of the largest Latino populations in the State of Iowa and the approval of a Spanish speaking caucus means that members of the community will be able to participate in the caucus process and have their voices heard” said Nick Salazar,

La mujer que atropelló a una niña por ser “mexicana” tiene los cargos suspendidos mientras la corte espera la evaluación de su capacidad mental Por Tar Macias La mañana del 30 de diciembre Nicole Poole Franklin, de 42 años, la mujer que atropelló a una niña por ser “mexicana”, estaba en espera para su audiencia preliminar sobre el primer cargo por intento de asesinato, su abogado, Matthew Sheely, pidió una evaluación psiquiátrica a la corte para determinar si es mentalmente competente. Sheely dijo que Franklin sufre de un trastorno mental y está incapacitada para ir a juicio. La Juez Superior de la Corte de Distrito del Condado de Polk, Karen Romano, concedió la solicitud de la evaluación de capacidad alegando que hay causa probable. El 9 de diciembre, poco antes de las
5 p.m., Natalia Miranda una niña de 14 años caminaba por la acera camino a una actividad en Indian Hills Jr. High School en Clive, IA. Un vehículo salió de la carretera y atropelló a la niña.
