Conozca a los nuevos oficiales del Departamento de Policía de Davenport, oficiales González y Mitchell Por Anastassia Zvoryguina El miércoles 9 de enero, el alcalde de Davenport, Frank Klipsch, les tomó protesta a ocho nuevos oficiales de policía y dos de los cuales son latinos. Conozca a los nuevos oficiales reclutados del Departamento de Policía de Davenport, oficiales González y Mitchell. Martín González creció en Davenport y se graduó de Davenport West High School en 2012. Mientras trabajaba para conseguir su licenciatura en el campus de Western Quad Cities de Western Illinois University, el Sr. González trabajó como oficial de seguridad en Global Security Services y luego logró una pasantía en la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Rock Island. Después de graduarse, trabajó como Oficial Correccional en la Cárcel del Condado de Scott. El nuevo informe del Instituto Hispano proporciona detalles sobre el impacto positivo que los inmigrantes tienen en Iowa y Nevada Con toda la información falsa que predomina en las discusiones sobre la inmigración, es importante contar con datos concretos que ofrezcan un panorama claro de los efectos económicos de la inmigración. Esta semana, el Instituto Hispano publicó un informe especial que muestra el impacto económico positivo de la inmigración. El informe habla sobre Iowa y Nevada, dos estados que juegan un papel importante cuando se trata de política. El nombre del informe es “Historia de dos estados: un examen del impacto de la inmigración en Iowa y Nevada.” Este informe declara que estos dos estados fueron tomados en cuenta porque ambos brindan oportunidades de empleo que no requieren títulos universitarios ni habilidades extraordinarias en el idioma inglés. New Hispanic Institute report details positive impact of immigrants in Iowa, Nevada With all the falsehoods dominating the discussion about immigration it is important to have hard facts that would give a clear picture of the economic effects of immigration. This week the Hispanic Institute released a special report that shows the positive economic impact of immigration. The report covers Iowa and Nevada, two states that play important role when it comes to politics. The name of the report is A Tale of Two States: An Examination of the Impact of Immigration in Iowa and Nevada. This report states that these two states were taken into consideration because both provide employment opportunities that do not require college degrees or even excellent English skills. In case of Iowa there is a lot of farm work, while in Nevada immigrants are mostly employed in hospitality, entertainment and construction. According to this report, even though immigrants account for just 5% of the population in Iowa, they contribute more than $1 billion in taxes and they

have a spending power of $3 billion. Unlike popular belief, not all immigrants receive government help, in fact, according to this report, out of all self-employed Iowans, 2.5% are immigrant business owners. In 2015, immigrant businesses generated income of 54.6 $million. This report clearly shows that immigrants are willing to take jobs that native-born Americans do not wish to take. Immigrants pay local, state and federal taxes and they start businesses. Also, one of the important points of the report states that unlike politicians that represent them, many residents of both Iowa and Nevada support a more progressive approach to immigration, especially when it comes to DACA. “Immigrants rebuild economies, take on work that others may not want to take on and provide billions of dollars of buying power. When we look at the immigrant population here in Iowa, immigrants have $3 billion worth of buying power here in Iowa. When we look at Nevada, it’s over $10 billion.

So we need to look at that and realize how much Latinos and immigrants are doing,” LULAC Council 307 President Joe Henry said. This special report on immigration provides many starting points for discussions. It also projects that positive economic impact of the Hispanic population in Iowa will increase with population increase. According to the report from September 2018 made by State Data Center of Iowa, it is believed that by 2050 the Latino population in the state of Iowa is expected to reach 12.3% or 425,000 people. Overall, the report demonstrates that immigration impacts the US and Iowa economies in a positive way. The Hispanic Institute hopes that this report can jumpstart the discussion of immigration with less falsehoods and more facts, especially leading into the 2020 presidential campaigns. Get your best boots and hats ready because rodeo is rolling into town on January of 2019. CINCH World’s Toughest Rodeo will be at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines Friday January 11 and Saturday 12 and at the TaxSlayer Center in Moline, IL on Friday, January 18 and

Saturday 19 at 7:30 PM both nights. Everyone out there heard about rodeo. Although, today rodeo is a sporting event, it did not start as such. In fact, in Spanish America rodeo meant to gather the cattle for moving to new pastures, separate cattle owned by different ranchers or to prepare the cattle for matanza (slaughter). In the beginning, there was Juez del Campo who used to supervise the rodeos when cattle

was separated and he, also, resolved the questions of ownership. Over time the rodeos changed and turned into yearly events with festivities and horsemen demonstrating their equestrian skills. Later rodeo was adopted by cowboys in the United States and Canada. Today rodeo is a big sporting event that even has National Finals and World Champion winner. CINCH World’s Toughest Rodeo will be

at the Wells Fargo Arena and the TaxSlayer Center with 3 events most loved by fans. There will be Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc Riding, and Bull Riding. 12 competitors will compete for the chance of final Showdown Round where winner takes all. Cowboys will not be the only ones showing off their skills. Cowgirls will come up front and center for the best Women’s Barrel Racing around. Cowgirls will have their animal athletes battle the clock for the title. On top of these competitions, CINCH World’s Toughest Rodeo will have interesting specialty entertainers. Have you ever seen world’s smallest cowboy who can herd sheep like no one else out there? If not, get ready for the one of a kind show. WHIPLASH the cowboy monkey of only 8 pounds and 2 feet tall with his steed Boogie will do its best to catch Barbados sheep. Along with Whiplash, Dusti Dickerson, Trick and Roman rider, will do stunts while riding her horse at high speed and that will sure impress any rodeo lover out there. El músico, fanático del fútbol, agente de bienes raíces y empresario desde finales del 2018 es ahora dueño de una radiodifusora La Q Buena 106.9 FM en Des Moines, Iowa. El Sr. Aveiga, junto con Darwin Salas, son los propietarios de esta nueva propuesta en las estaciones de música de Iowa Central. Según su misión, por medio de su programación, promociones, comerciales, festivales y eventos La Q Buena busca a brindar apoyo a la comunidad Hispano hablante. “Queremos que todo el talento tenga la oportunidad para catapultarse gracias a La Q Buena. Cuando digo talento es DJ, Bandas y promotores”, detalló Fernando Aveiga. “Unos de nuestros objetivos son brindar el más alto nivel de difusión radial

al público en Español y exponer grupos y artistas así como nuevos talentos de alta calidad y levantamiento de categoría y constante evolución.” El año pasado 30 de noviembre La Q Buena tuvo su festival de lanzamiento en el & Flags event center. Fue un gran evento en la comunidad Latina de Des Moines, IA. Durante el festival de lanzamiento tocaron varias bandas y el grupo Akwid para celebrar en grande la nueva estación. La estatua ahora se encuentra en la capilla de San José. On December 12 Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Class of 1978 presented Dowling with a beautiful gift of an imported Our Lady of Guadalupe statue and Bishop Pates served as celebrant of the Mass & Dedication of the Statue. LULAC Davenport celebrates 60 years of giving back to the community LULAC Council 10 of Davenport Iowa is pleased to announce its 60th Anniversary Fiesta on February 9, 2019 at the LULAC Center in Davenport Iowa. For sixty years, LULAC has been an active organization in the Quad Cities community. Since its formation in 1959, LULAC has led by example and gave back to the community through many channels, including a scholarship program that has distributed over half a million dollars to college students in our area. Putnam opens conversation about race, equity and inclusion By Jack Cullen In alignment with the Q2030 Regional Action Plan, the Putnam Museum is unveiling an exhibit Saturday, Jan. 26, called RACE: Are We So Different? Visitors will explore race through these three lenses: the history of race; the science of race; and the recent experience of race and racism in the U.S. Putnam President and CEO Kim Findlay encourages businesses and other organizations to use the exhibit to open discussion about equity and inclusion in the workplace. Volunteers also are needed to serve as hosts and discussion facilitators during the exhibit’s fourmonth run in the Quad Cities. According to a follow-up survey of the 5,000 plus people who participated in the Quad Cities Big Table last April,

36 percent of hosts said their groups discussed equity and social inclusion. They identified the need to develop awareness of the challenges certain populations face and empathy for people from different backgrounds. To make the Quad Cities a more welcoming and inclusive place to live, Big Table participants called for the sponsorship and promotion of more cultural events that celebrate the area’s diversity, among other solutions. Meet officer Gonzalez and officer Mitchell two of the new recruits for Davenport Police Department By Anastassia Zvoryguina On Wednesday, January 9 Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch swore in eight new police officer and 2 of them are Latino. Meet Davenport Police Department new Latino recruits officer Gonzalez and officer Mitchell. Martin Gonzalez grew up in Davenport and graduated from Davenport West High School in 2012. While working for his Bachelor’s degree from from Western Illinois University-Quad Cities Campus, Mr. Gonzalez worked as a security officer with Global Security Services and later completed an internship with Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office. After graduating, he took a job as a Correctional Officer at the Scott County Jail. While attending the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Martin Gonzalez received the 300 point club award for physical fitness. Skylar Mitchell grew up in Dixon, Ill., where he graduated from Dixon High School in 2014. He was a two sport athlete in high school and college. After graduation from High school, Mr. Mitchell attended St. Ambrose University where he was a four-year varsity runner in cross country and track and field while working on his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Skylar Mitchell completed an internship at the Work Release Center and the Residential Correctional Facility. Currently he resides in Davenport, IA and in his spare time he enjoys spending his free time outdoors and running. “On behave of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) we would like congratulate officers Gonzalez & Mitchell as well as the Davenport Police Department,” Michael Reyes, State director for LULAC Iowa said. “LULAC along with the NAACP, Quad Cities Interfaith, the Catholic Diocese and the community as a whole have been strong advocates for diversity in the Davenport Police Dept.
