El camino a la recuperación de Cruz Pérez es un día a la vez A través de muchos desafíos, Cruz Pérez de Davenport se gradúa de la escuela preparatoria. El 3 de junio de 2015, Cruz Pérez, de 14 años, fue atropellado mientras conducía su bicicleta. El horrible accidente lo dejó gravemente herido y tuvo que ser trasladado en avión al hospital de la ciudad de Iowa. Nadie esperaba que Cruz viviera. Los médicos aconsejaron a la familia estar preparada para lo peor, pero el deseo de Cruz de vivir era fuerte. A pesar de que salió del hospital a fines de agosto de ese año, aún no terminaba. Ahora tenía que ir al centro de rehabilitación, donde tenía que volver a aprender a hablar, a caminar y a comer solo. Para sorpresa de todos, Cruz estaba progresando rápidamente. Por supuesto, ayuda tener una madre fuerte y dedicada que te empuja a esforzarte más y nunca rendirte. “Siempre tuve una lucha entre la en-

fermera y la madre dentro de mí. Como madre quería proteger a mi hijo y como enfermera no quería limitarlo. Quería hacer lo mejor para él”, dijo la Sra. Pérez. Cuatro años más tarde y el 2 de junio de 2019, un día antes de la fecha de su accidente 4 años antes, Cruz Pérez subió al escenario en el TaxSlayer Center para recibir su diploma de la Escuela West High School en Davenport, IA. Este otoño asistirá a la Universidad de Saint Ambrose para formar parte del Programa de Búsqueda de Proyectos. Aún hay desafíos todos los días, pero Cruz ha recorrido un largo camino gracias al amor y apoyo de su madre Stacy y su familia. “El diagnóstico de hoy no es el pronóstico de mañana”, dijo la Sra. Pérez en su dicho favorito. Cruz nos lo ha demostrado. ¡Felicitaciones Cruz! ¡Te alentamos y te apoyamos a que sigas luchando!

Cruz Perez road to recovery is one day at a time On June 3rd, 2015 then 14 yearold Cruz Perez was run over while riding his bicycle. The horrible accident left him badly injured and he had to be airlifted to the Iowa City Hospital. No one expected for Cruz to live. Doctors advised the family to be ready for the worst, but Cruz’s desire to live was strong. Even though he walked out of the hospital at the end of august of that year, it was far from over. Now he had to go to the rehabilitation facilities where he had to learn again to talk, to walk, and to eat on his own. To everyone’s surprise Cruz was progressing fast. Of course, it helps having a strong and dedicated mom who pushes you to try harder and never give up. “I always had a struggle between a nurse and a mother inside me. As a mother I wanted to protect my son and as a nurse I did not want to limit him. I wanted to do what was best for him,” Mrs. Perez told. Fast forward 4 years later and on June 2, 2019, a day before the 4 year mark of his accident, Cruz Perez walked up to the stage at the TaxSlayer Center to received his HS diploma from West HS in Davenport, IA. This fall he will be attending Saint Ambrose University to be part of the Project Search Program. Everyday there are still challenges but Cruz as come a long way thanks to the love and support of his mother Stacy and his family. “Today’s diagnosis is not tomorrow’s prognosis,” Mrs. Perez shared her favorite statement. Cruz sure proved us that. Congratulations Cruz! We cheer and encourage you to keep on fighting!

Young Latina set to challenge Coleman in City Council At-Large Race in Des Moines On Friday June 28 Marlu Abarca, 27, announced her run for City Council At-Large at her campaign kick-off event hosted by Adriana’s Agency in La Placita corridor in the East Side of Des Moines. Abarca brings years of experience serving on local and statewide boards and commissions; her most notable appointment being to the Governor’s Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs in 2016, with a re-appointment in 2018. An avid volunteer, Abarca had to step down from several boards this Spring, in order to make time for the campaign race. “I chose

to step down from the Board in which I had served the longest six years - which was a difficult decision, since I initially started as an intern with Al Exito, and then later became the organization’s first Latina Board President,” says Abarca. Abarca’s platform includes increasing the visibility of the City Council among Des Moines residents, expanding DMPD’s community outreach efforts, improving resources for homeless and transient populations, and improving the City’s overall accessibility for residents that rely on walking,

biking, and taking public transit as their main form of transportation. “I want to live in a City where we don’t ignore the needs of its residents. Students need sidewalks to get to school; all residents need to be able to trust law enforcement in case of an emergency; I’m the one the City Council needs to get things done.” Abarca has served on DMPD’s Community Ambassadors program since 2016, and was part of the first all-Latino class of the Police Department’s Citizen’s Academy in 2017.

Residente de la vecindad de North of Grand dió una conferencia de prensa en Adriana’s Agencia en La Placita, ubicada en la parte Este de Des Moines. Abarca trae años de experiencia como líder de varias juntas directivas y comisiones locales como estatales, su más notable siendo su nombramiento a la Comisión de Asuntos Latinos de Iowa en el 2016, con una reasignación de cargo en el 2018. MARSHALLTOWN Nicolas “Niko” Aguirre fue seleccionado por la Junta de Educación del Distrito Escolar de la Comunidad de Marshalltown para cubrir una vacante de cuatro meses en la junta escolar durante una reunión especial el 2 de julio. Aguirre trabaja como Director de Recursos Humanos en JBS en Marshalltown. Se considera un “líder de servicio” que dijo que ha estado muy involucrado en la comunidad durante sus más de dos años en Marshalltown. “He intentado estar extremadamente activo en la comunidad desde que estoy aquí”, dijo Aguirre. Aguirre dijo que también puede relacionarse con muchos de los estudiantes de Marshalltown ya que es un estadounidense de primera generación. “Yo soy uno de ellos”, dijo Aguirre. Esta posición ahora ocupada por Aguirre estará en la elección junto con otros tres lugares en la junta escolar en noviembre. Aguirre works as Human Resources Director at JBS in Marshalltown. He considers himself a “servant leader” who said he has been very involved in the community during his more than two years in Marshalltown. “I have attempted to be extremely active in the community since I’ve been here,” Aguirre said. Aguirre said he can also relate to many of the Marshalltown students as he is a first generation American. “I am of them,” Aguirre said. “Los frutos de una voluntad inquebrantable: Una historia real”. La historia inmigrante de Marlen Maddux Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Cada inmigrante tiene una historia que contar, pero no todos están dispuestos a compartirla con el mundo. Marlen Maddux es una de esas pocas personas que querían que el mundo escuchara su historia. La historia de su vida, como ella la llama, es ahora un libro titulado “The Fruits of Unyielding Will: A True Story” (Los frutos de una voluntad inquebrantable: Una historia real), disponible en Amazon. Marlen Maddux no tuvo una vida fácil en su Honduras natal. Ella sufrió la pérdida de su padre a una edad temprana, trabajó duro y aprendió a defenderse mientras vivía en la ciudad, pero todo se vino abajo cuando el huracán Mitch devastó Honduras en 1998. Nos quedábamos regularmente con nuestros abuelos o ellos venían a la granja. La familia extendida es una fuente de protección, asistencia y amistad en Honduras en mayor grado que en los Estados Unidos. Mi madre pasaba sus días cocinando en la cocina al lado de la casa, limpiando y cuidando de mis hermanos menores. La mayoría de las niñas de mi edad, si no estuvieran en la escuela, ayudarían a sus madres en estas tareas. Pero me encantaba estar afuera y definitivamente era una

niña de papá. Yo veía a mi papá hacer su desayuno de jugo de naranja recién exprimido y un huevo y trataba de hacer lo mismo. No sabía cómo extraer el jugo de la fruta, así que me ponía un huevo en la boca, todos los días hasta que me enseñaba a hacerlo. Mi padre me llevaba a sus rondas siguiendo el perímetro de la propiedad a caballo, con los perros para buscar gatos monteses o boa constrictor o cualquier otro depredador. Estos depredadores, si no son localizados, se alimentan del ganado y de los pollos o patos. Una vez, en una de estas aventuras, mi padre subió a un árbol para perseguir a varias zarigüeyas y hacerlas saltar a los perros de caza que estaban esperando abajo. Cuando el último parecía que se iba a escapar, lo agarré por la cola, pero se giró y me mordió en la mano. Mi padre bajó rápidamente del árbol para ayudar. Estaba asustada, pero todo el tiempo, en la distancia, mis hermanos estaban mirando y riendo. Hasta el día de hoy, se burlan de mí por atrapar esa zarigüeya con las manos. Mi pequeña mano estaba destrozada, pero mi padre me cuidó hasta que sanó”. “The Fruits of Unyielding Will: A True Story” Marlen Maddux’s immigrant story By Anastassia Zvoryguina Every immigrant person has a story to tell, but not everyone is willing to share their story with the world. Marlen Maddux is one of those few people who wanted the world to hear her story. The story of her life, as she calls it, is now a book called “The Fruits of Unyielding Will: A True Story”, available on Amazon. Marlen Maddux did not have an easy life in her native Honduras. She endured the loss of her father at an early age, worked hard and learned to defend herself while living in the city, but it all came crashing down when hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras in 1998. The hurricane took everything from Ms. Maddux. She had no shelter to house her children in and no food to feed them. In order to survive herself and save her children, she made a life-changing decision of traveling through the mountains of Central America and Mexico to come for a better life in the United States. This journey is uncertain. This journey is a gamble with life itself. Marlen Maddux made a desperate choice and she was one of the lucky ones. She made it to the United States and eventually settled in Des Moines, IA. In Iowa she was working hard on making her American Dream a reality and in 2016 she came to the conclusion that her future descendants should know where they come from and she started working on her book. “I wrote the book in 2016,” Marlen Maddux shared. “Initially, I wrote the book as a memoir for family and friends. Many people I knew were interested in my story and I thought it important for my children and their children to have a family history.” Ms. Maddux described her book as a positive story that tells how she confronted the difficulties that life threw at her and came out winning. “Beyond family, it is a positive true story of overcoming hardship,

finding purpose and motivation, and appreciation of kindness, and the beauty of being raised on a rural farm in Central America,” she told Hola Iowa. “My hope is others can find the knowledge that they too can overcome hardship and find a love for life and people.” She also added that she is very thankful to everyone who supported her, offered her opportunities to share her amazing story and just being interested in this story of not giving up even at times when it feels like the world got darker and there is no way out of it. “The Fruits of Unyielding Will: A True Story” by Marlen Maddux is available on Amazon. Here is an excerpt from Marlen’s book “The Fruits of Unyielding Will: A True Story” available on Amazon: “I was born on a farm near the small town of San Jose de Texiguat in the state of Atlantida, Honduras. The third of eight children, to a mother who was given into marriage at age 14, I was the first girl and would be followed closely by my brothers Carlos and Javier. The three of us were always together as we grew up, even into adulthood. We would spend our days as children exploring the forest, climbing trees for mangos, playing soccer in the yard, and swimming in the river that went through the farm. The river was rich with fish, and when we wanted to catch one we would stand still with our hands in the current, wait for one to swim by, then grab it and take it to the shore. We played together, fished together, and when one of us would misbehave we would all get whipped together. Our farm was basically in the middle of an area where my mother’s family lived; my great grandparents lived very close to us, my grandparents lived in the same area, many of my mom’s brothers, aunts,

uncles, and cousins lived in town. We would regularly stay with our grandparents or they would come to the farm. Extended family is a source of protection, assistance, and friendship in Honduras to a greater degree than in the United States. My mother would spend her days cooking in the kitchen beside the house, cleaning, and taking care of my younger siblings. Most girls my age, if not in school, would help their mothers in these tasks. But I loved being outside and I was definitely a daddy’s girl. I would watch my dad make his breakfast of fresh squeezed orange juice and an egg and try to do the same. I didn’t know how to extract the juice from the fruit, so I would just put an egg in my mouth -- every day until he showed me how to do it. My father would take me on his rounds following the perimeter of the property on horseback, with the dogs to look for bobcat or boa constrictors or any other predator. These predators, if not tracked down, would feed on the livestock and chickens or ducks. One time, on one of these adventures, my dad climbed a tree to chase out several opossums and make them jump down to the waiting hunting dogs below. When the last one looked like it might escape I grabbed it by the tail, but it turned around and bit into my hand. My father came quickly down the tree to help. I was scared, but all the while, in the distance, my brothers were watching and laughing. To this day, they make fun of me for catching that opossum with my hands. Carlos Portes: un homenaje Por Jeff Hutton

Cuando Carlos Portes se convertía en el centro de atención, se podría garantizar que habría buenos cigarros, refrescantes mojitos y una plática estimulante. Era un hombre de ideas, tenía un vasto conocimiento del mundo que lo rodeaba y era leal a los muchos amigos que, a su vez, se convirtieron en su familia. Portes, de 68 años, murió el 16 de junio de 2019 por insuficiencia cardíaca y renal, una batalla que libró valientemente en los últimos años. Su vida fue la definición de “El sueño americano”, abriendo camino desde Cuba a Iowa, a la ciudad de Nueva York y a Washington, DC, a los puertos de todo el mundo y, finalmente, a su querido Marshalltown, donde se retiró y vivió sus últimos días. quienes apreciaba y se propuso hacerles saber que no se trataba de negocios o de política, sino de afecto y amistad. En enero de 2016, en uno de sus últimos viajes a Cuba, tuve el privilegio de viajar con Carlos y un pequeño contingente de gente de Iowa como parte de una misión comercial entre Iowa y Cuba. Dirigidos por Carlos y el ex senador estatal Steve Sodders (D-State Center), hicimos una caminata por toda La Habana, reuniéndonos con funcionarios del gobierno cubano. Las habilidades diplomáticas de Portes estaban en toda su expresión. Conozco muy poco el español, pero era evidente que Carlo sabía cómo llevar una conversación para que fuera atractiva y efectiva. En Marshalltown, a pesar de su retiro, Carlos se mantuvo

Carlos Portes: A Tribute By Jeff Hutton

When Carlos Portes held court, you could guarantee there would be good cigars, refreshing mojitos and challenging conversation. He was a man of ideas, had a vast knowledge of the world around him and was loyal to the many friends who, in turn, became his family. Portes, 68, died June 16, 2019 from heart and kidney failure, a battle he waged valiantly over the past few years. His life was the definition of “The American Dream,” having made his way from Cuba to Iowa, to New York City and Washington, D.C., to ports around the world, and finally back to his beloved Marshalltown, where he retired and lived out his remaining days. Portes came to the United States via the Catholic Charities’ program “Operation Pedro Pan” during the Castro takeover of Cuba in the early 1960s. He landed in Marshalltown, Iowa, where he lived with his Marshalltown parents, Catherine and Leon Hockett. The Hocketts, through their guidance, encouraged and molded a young Carlos to learn English, understand the American culture, while making sure he retained his Cuban sensibilities.

As a teenager, he was reunited with his Cuban family in New York City, where his journey into business, politics and diplomacy began. Portes’ business acumen helped him become one of the premier insurance agents through Allstate, gaining clients and developing multiple new relationships within the Latino population in New York. He eventually opened his open insurance agency and made a name for himself throughout the East Coast as a premier businessman and was appointed to numerous boards, including the American Red Cross, American Cancer Society, New York Presbyterian Hospital. His work and his activities throughout New York City caught the attention of then- Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter, who asked Portes to be part of his 1976 presidential campaign. Carter’s election to the presidency catapulted Portes into the world of politics and diplomacy after Carter appointed Portes as the U.S. Ambassador for Latin American Affairs. Portes traveled throughout the world, establishing diplomatic ties between the United States and numerous countries. His wise counsel was sought by every U.S. president from Carter to Obama, the latter who guided the United States and Cuba to reestablish a diplomatic relationship.

In his office in Marshalltown, the walls are covered with mementos and photographs of Portes alongside American political heavy hitters, presidents, congressmen, politicians of every stripe. And while his diplomatic and business skills were well known to those in the White House and Congress, from New York City, Washington, D.C. and Havana, I was fortunate to know the man when he made the return trip to Marshalltown to live out his life. I was serving as the editor of the Marshalltown Times-Republican and heard about the “great Carlos Portes.” I actually met him during a meeting in the office of state Rep. Mark Smith (D-Marshalltown) at the Iowa Statehouse where we discussed a number of issues. Engaging, smart, politically savvy and always charismatic, Portes made a point of seeking me out and there began a friendship that I will cherish for the remainder of my life. He wanted to know my story, my interests, my ambitions and more importantly, he wanted my friendship. “I knew that I needed to know you,” he said when he called me up a few days after we had met in Des Moines. But this wasn’t unique. Carlos reached out to those he cared for and made it a point to let them know that this wasn’t about busi-

ness or politics, rather it was about love and friendship. In January 2016, in one of his last trips to Cuba, I was privileged to travel with Carlos and a small contingent of Iowans as part of a trade mission between Iowa and Cuba. Led by Carlos and former state Sen. Steve Sodders (D-State Center), we trekked throughout Havana, meeting with Cuban government officials. Portes’ diplomatic skills were on full display. I know very little Spanish, but it was evident he knew how to massage and craft a conversation that was engaging and effective. In Marshalltown, despite his retirement, Carlos kept busy and was active volunteering his time and expertise in many community ventures, including the United Way, the Marshalltown Business & Education Alliance, the creation of a LULAC chapter in Marshalltown and a local Crime Stoppers board, while also receiving a number of honors and accolades. Carlos’ passing is sad, but the memories he helped to create for those of us blessed to have known him will sustain us. And that is something I will be forever grateful for. Celso Piña will headline the Warren Jose’s Tire Service Morrow Latin Music Festival in his first presentation in Iowa

Celso Piña (Born April the 6th 1953 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, México), renowned accordion player and singer who has risen to be one of the most notable figures in cumbia music will make his Iowa debut on July 20 at the Warren Morrow Latin Music Festival in downtown Des Moines. Cumbia’s roots are Colombian, which is fitting since the festival takes place on Colombian Independence Day. More importantly, Piña has incorporated his Mexican roots and the sounds he’s heard on his travels throughout Latin America and the Caribbean so it appeals to a wide audience. “Our festival is for everyone, and we pride ourselves on bringing musicians that have never played in Des Moines, offering Central Iowans variety and diversity in their

live music choices so getting such a highly sought-after artist such as Celso Piña to play at our festival is exciting. His band’s energy is contagious and his sound is universal so even if you don’t know what he is saying, the music will still move you,” says Amner Martinez, one of the festival’s founders.
