Forward Latino pide una acción significativa sobre la inmigración y la protección del derecho humano de asilo

Forward Latino, una organización nacional sin fines de lucro, no partidista de servicio y apoyo con miembros y afiliados en veintinueve estados y con sede en Franklin, Wisconsin emitió la siguiente declaración con respecto a la Acción Ejecutiva anunciada por la Administración Biden sobre la seguridad fronteriza.

El Presidente Nacional Darryl Morin emitió la siguiente declaración:

“Forward Latino sigue pidiendo una reforma migratoria significativa que garantice la seguridad y la economía de la nación, al tiempo que mantiene su compromiso con la protección de los derechos humanos y, con ello, la dignidad humana. La acción ejecutiva anunciada por la Administración Biden no cumple con este estándar. Aunque la agitación política, la persecución y la violencia siguen afectando a los flujos migratorios, la inmensa mayoría de los inmigrantes que llegan a Estados Unidos lo hacen en busca de oportunidades económicas. Existe una correlación directa entre las tasas de desempleo de Estados Unidos y los flujos de inmigración. En la actualidad, Estados Unidos tiene una escasez de mano de obra de más de 2,000,000 de trabajadores, lo que se traduce en un elevado número de inmigrantes que llegan a Estados Unidos. Si Estados Unidos se toma en serio la seguridad de sus fronteras, entonces debe abordar el principal motor de estos flujos de inmigración. Por esta razón, Forward Latino pide al Presidente Biden que utilice su autoridad para conceder la liber-

tad condicional y la autorización de trabajo a la población indocumentada que ha residido en los Estados Unidos durante un período prolongado de tiempo, así como a los cónyuges de ciudadanos estadounidenses. Como exige el proceso de libertad condicional, estas personas tendrían que pasar primero una exhaustiva verificación de antecedentes antes de que se les concediera este estatus temporal. Conceder la libertad condicional y la autorización de trabajo a estas personas no sólo reduciría drásticamente los flujos de inmigración, sino que permitiría a los que actualmente viven en la sombra, contribuir plenamente al crecimiento de nuestra economía, estabilizar los salarios lo que a su vez reduciría la inflación y, por último, contribuir a la prosperidad de todos los estadounidenses.”

Quad Cities, IA/IL - El espectáculo anual biestatal Red, White and Boom! se celebrará el 3 de julio de 2024. Esa noche habrá actividades para toda la familia en el centro de Davenport, IA, y Rock Island, IL. A las 9:30 PM se dispararán fuegos artificiales, sincronizados con la música que transmitirá la 97X, desde dos barcazas situadas en medio del río Misisipi.

Samantha Mesa: De una infancia vibrante a una voz para los vulnerables

Como hermana mayor de cinco hermanos pequeños y la tercera de ocho hermanos en total, Samantha Mesa ha estado toda su vida en el centro de las historias. “Puedes imaginarte toda la energía que hay en mi casa”. Como creció en un hogar mexicano-irlandés en Lafayette, Colorado, donde cuidaba de sus hermanos y animales, siempre pasaba algo. Todos los días a las cuatro, Mesa encendía la televisión para ver Oprah mientras ella y su madre limpiaban o preparaban la cena. “Me encantaba la capacidad de Oprah para entrevistar a la gente y conocer el trasfondo de cualquier tema. Era mi ventana al mundo”. Las personas del programa eran superhéroes para Mesa. “Se enfrentaban a situaciones de crisis y defendían a los más vulnerables. Luego hacían responsables a los que tomaban las decisiones y les preguntaban qué iban a hacer”. Eso se le quedó grabado a Mesa cuando llegó a la edad adulta, pero no fue un camino claro hacia el periodismo. En la preparatoria obtuvo una beca para estudiar cosmetología. La clase era mayoritariamente hispana y femenina, al igual que la mayoría del personal. Sin embargo, no todos vieron su potencial. Recuerda en particular a algunos profesores que no eran latinos. “Nos decían que la mitad de nosotras abandonaría los estudios y la otra mitad se quedaría embarazada. Las que terminen, necesitarán un trabajo mejor que el de Walmart cuando tengan hijos y el padre de su bebé las deje”. Mesa se sorprendió, pero no dejó que eso la desanimara. “Me animó. Salí adelante y conseguí la licencia de cosmetología”. Su hermano mayor, el primero en obtener un título universitario, la animó a hacer lo mismo. Aunque persistió, esas palabras hicieron tambalear su confianza. Decidió probar como modelo en Los Ángeles. Rápidamente se dio cuenta de que no era para ella. Regresó a Colorado y utilizó su licencia para estudiar Comunicación, Ciencias Políticas y Política Pública Internacional en la Universidad de Colorado, en Denver. Durante este tiempo le diagnosticaron a su padre un cáncer de próstata inoperable en fase cuatro. “Recibes esa llamada y te deja sin aliento”. Dejó los estudios y volvió a casa de sus padres para ayudar a cuidar de su padre. “Trabajaba seis días a la semana y hacía colectas, maratones de peluquería para ayudar a pagar los gastos”. Lamentablemente, su padre falleció al cabo de un año. “Es realmente traumatizante ver a alguien someterse a una quimioterapia agresiva y que no funcione”. Con cuatro hermanos menores que dependían de su madre viuda, Mesa se sintió obligada a hacer algo más. Volvió a la escuela con un enfoque renovado. “Tardé cinco años y medio en ter-

minar la licenciatura y me dediqué en todas las clases. No quería que fuera en vano”. Ver a su padre hacer trabajos intensivos en la construcción, con largas horas de trabajo agotador, y aun así no tener seguro médico fue impactante. Eso la impulsó a trabajar en sectores que ayudan a los más vulnerables, como los centros correccionales. “Oír todas estas historias de personas que reciben un golpe tras otro desde la infancia. Muchos nacen en entornos realmente destructivos. Eso me abrió los ojos y formó mi pasión por el periodismo”. Además de sus experiencias personales y laborales, se centró en la narración de historias durante un viaje de estudios a Marruecos y Túnez. “Acabé en medio de la Revolución tunecina y de las protestas de la Primavera Árabe. Viví con una activista de derechos humanos y conocí a un grupo de mujeres que estaban reescribiendo la Constitución tunecina”. Aquello consolidó su deseo de ser periodista.

Regresó a Estados Unidos y se matriculó en una escuela de posgrado para conseguir trabajo en redacciones. Con un máster en la Universidad de Columbia, Mesa empezó una carrera en noticias televisadas. Cubrió a los migrantes en la frontera durante la presidencia de Trump antes de su puesto en el noticiero matutino de WOI-TV en Des Moines. “No sabía mucho sobre el Medio Oeste y algunas de las experiencias que me han cambiado es ver a tantas personas que se preocupan por su comunidad y están trabajando en soluciones. Pude profundizar y dar a conocer a los artífices del cambio, personas que creen en un futuro mejor empezando por lo que tienen delante; lo que pueden hacer hoy”. Mesa entrevistó a más de 250 personas que nunca habían contado sus historias a los medios de comunicación y se esforzó por presentar al menos una historia de la comunidad latina cada día durante el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. “Fue increíble, porque sentí que formaba parte de algo más grande, alineándome con personas que trabajan desde el corazón, con convicción y pasión. Están aplicando sus dones a proyectos a los que se dedican y eso es muy inspirador.” En su búsqueda de historias, se convirtió en una cuando COVID-19 le afectó. Mesa perdió la audición en el oído derecho durante una emisión. Pasó meses incapacitada y tuvo que aprender a funcionar con su nueva discapacidad. “Volví a la televisión y traté de ser sincera con todo el mundo porque no podía endulzarlo, no podía fingir. La comunidad fue extraordinariamente amable y solidaria. Me propuse contar historias sobre personas con discapacidades y experiencias sensoriales. Hay que contar estas historias porque es una parte de nuestra sociedad que en gran medida se ignora”. Está agradecida por el cariño y el apoyo recibidos. “Si hu-

biera tenido que pasar por perder la audición y no hubiera tenido esta plataforma para dar a conocer las historias de la comunidad, creo que habría sido una experiencia más oscura”.

Mientras Mesa explora opciones ahora que su contrato con WOI-TV ha terminado, se está tomando su tiempo para elegir su próximo paso profesional y volver a algunos de sus viejos amores, como montar a caballo con la Escaramuza Quetzalli. Planea tener en cuenta a Iowa en su futuro, ya sea a través de su periodismo, de su vida o de sus frecuentes visitas para cumplir con sus compromisos en diversos eventos venideros. Una cosa está clara: seguirá contando historias. “Mi emoción viene de nuestras historias. Dan luz a otras personas que necesitan oír que, pase lo que pase, hay esperanza. Por eso comparto los momentos buenos y malos”.

La Cumbre de Excelencia Empresarial para Latinas fue todo un éxito

El 9 de mayo, más de 200 latinas de Iowa, Illinois y Nebraska se reunieron en la primera Cumbre de Excelencia Empresarial para Latinas en Des Moines. El evento fue idea de Erika Macías, editora de Hola America News y Hola Iowa con el apoyo de Claudia Schabel, presidenta de Schabel Solutions Inc, Rocío Hermocillo Tarín, cofundadora de Team ELLLA Real Estate, Blanca Plasencia, copropietaria de los restaurantes mexicanos El Fogón y El Guacamole, Perlla Deluca, directora ejecutiva de Southeast Constructors y fundadora de la Escuela de Construcción de Iowa. La planificación comenzó como un lanzamiento de la nueva revista JEFAS: Latinas in Business Magazine, la única publicación dedicada a mostrar a las empresarias latinas del Medio Oeste. A medida que las mujeres comentaban sus ideas, quedó claro que el evento

sería mucho más que eso.

“El objetivo era empoderar e inspirar a las mujeres. Como empresarias, a menudo nos sentimos aisladas. Esta era una oportunidad de reunirnos para compartir recursos, mostrar apoyo y celebrar lo lejos que hemos llegado”, dice Macías. El objetivo se cumplió con creces. Las entradas para la cumbre se agotaron, así que cambiaron el diseño, pidieron más sillas, aumentaron el pedido de catering y volvieron a abrir la venta de entradas. Las entradas volvieron a agotarse. “La demanda de unir a las latinas en un espacio dedicado a ellas superó nuestros sueños”, dice FernándezMorrow, jefa de redacción de JEFAS Magazine. “No sólo fue estupendo ver tanto apoyo a la revista, sino que esto demuestra que las latinas son una fuerza formidable en nuestra comunidad”.

La cumbre comenzó con la socialización y creación de redes mientras los asistentes degustaban café, pasteles, comida peruana y bocadillos mexicanos de las tiendas locales, rozaban una enorme tabla de embutidos, tenían la oportunidad de aprender acerca de los recursos y servicios para los propietarios de negocios, y comprar artículos como cosméticos de la línea MMKL, nacida en Storm Lake creada por una química cosmética latina que apareció en la revista. El tiempo permitió conexiones y reencuentros, el espacio se llenó de risas y mucha energía. El River Center estaba iluminado, con oportunidades para hacerse fotos delante de letras gigantes que decían LATINAS EN LOS NEGOCIOS y JEFAS y los ritmos de la DJ Lizz. ias latinas de Des Moines y Iowa City compartieron sus consejos y retos, seguidos de un discurso de Miriam De Dios Woodward, Directora General de De Dios Consulting. Cada ponente aportó una perspectiva única, compartiendo en conjunto más de 3 décadas de experiencia en la propiedad y el crecimiento de un negocio. El evento culminó con la presentación del primer número de Iowa de la revista JEFAS y más tiempo para establecer contactos y tomarse fotos en una plataforma giratoria ofrecida por Royalty Events. Según las respuestas a la evaluación, los asistentes están deseando que llegue la próxima edición.

Des Moines, IA - Los artistas Siricasso (Siriaco Garcia) y Seso Marentes estarán a cargo de Mainframe en la coordinación de un emocionante evento para celebrar la cultura latina el viernes 5 de julio de 5-8pm en Mainframe Studios. Como a Seso le gusta decir “Todo el mundo quiere asistir a una parrillada latina así que todos son bienvenidos a la carne asada”. No te pierdas esta oportunidad de experimentar la auténtica comida latina, el arte y la cultura. Habrá piñatas, Lowriders, actividades artísticas y una impactante exposición de la nueva obra de Siricasso en el atrio titulada “Sonríe ahora, llora después”.

La obra de Siri concienciará a los niños con padres encarcelados sobre la drogadicción. Los mensajes que comparte inspirarán a la comunidad para apoyar mejor a los niños que sufren ansiedad, depresión y carecen de hogar a causa de padres con problemas de drogadicción. Su obra recordará a la

gente que está bien llorar y dejar salir las emociones en lugar de ponerles una máscara.

Al Exito, Full Drop Studio y Eternal Artwear también estarán presentes en el Atrium, y Siricasso organizará una actividad “Sip & Paint” en The Big Room junto con DJ Astro. Disfrute de la comida de Hot Tamale Catering, Maria’s Tacos, etc.

La galería de la 2ª planta presentará obras de arte y fotografía de Miriam Alarcón y Anthony Arroyo. Ashely Guzmán y Milton Eclatt mostrarán su arte en la galería de la 3ª planta, y Seso Marentes organizará una actividad artística comunitaria en el espacio de la galería de la 4ª planta. St. Ambrose University anuncia que el ex alumno Daniel Salazar ha sido elegido finalista para el prestigioso programa Fulbright

Davenport, IA – Amy C. Novak, EdD, presidenta de St. Ambrose University, anunció hoy que el ex-alumno Daniel Salazar ‘ de 23 años ha sido elegido como finalista Fulbright, o ganador del premio, para la beca de asistente de enseñanza de inglés en España. El Programa Fulbright es una prestigiosa beca internacional que ofrece a estudiantes, académicos y profesionales la oportunidad de enseñar y estudiar en más de 140 países. Menos del 20% de los solicitantes del programa Fulbright logran la condición de finalistas. Salazar se graduó en la Universidad de St. Ambrose en diciembre de 2023 con una licenciatura en Educación Secundaria de Historia. El nativo de Muscatine, Iowa, dudaba si solicitar la beca. Enseñar en el extranjero no era su camino previsto. Pero se inspiró en los sacrificios de su abuelo para aprovechar todas las oportunidades que se le presentaran. “Por mucho que me asuste pensar en dejar todo lo que he conocido, no veo otro camino lo que considero mi deber y mi responsabilidad. El deber de aprovechar las oportunidades gracias a un abuelo que no tuvo ninguna”, dice Salazar. “El trabajo manual dejó a mi abuelo con poca sensibilidad en las yemas de los dedos y requirió varias operaciones. Pensé en la soledad que debió de sentir al dejar todo lo que

July’s First Friday: Latino Culture Celebration at Mainframe Studios

Des Moines, IA - Artists Siricasso (Siriaco Garcia) and Seso Marentes are taking over Mainframe and coordinating an exciting event to celebrate Latino culture on Friday, July 5 from 5-8pm at Mainframe Studios. As Seso likes to say “Everyone wants to attend a Latino barbeque so all are welcome to the carne asada.” Don’t miss out on this opportunity to experience authentic Latino food, art, and culture. There will be piñatas, Lowriders, art activities, and a powerful exhibition of new work in the atrium by Siricasso called, “smile now, cry later.”

Siri’s work will spread awareness about drug abuse for the kids who have incarcerated parents. The messages he shares will inspire the community to better support kids who are dealing with anxiety, depression, and homelessness because of parents who are involved with drug addiction. His work will remind people it’s okay to cry and let out your emotions instead of putting a mask on them.

St. Ambrose University announces Alumnus Daniel Salazar chosen

as

finalist for prestigious Fulbright Program

Davenport, IA – Amy C. Novak, EdD, president of St. Ambrose University, announced today that alumnus Daniel Salazar ’23 has been chosen as a Fulbright finalist, or award winner, for the English teaching assistantship in Spain. The Fulbright Program is a prestigious international grant that gives students, scholars, and professionals the opportunity to teach and study in more than 140 countries. Fewer than 20% of applicants to the Fulbright program achieve finalist status. Salazar graduated from St. Ambrose University in December 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary History Education. The Muscatine, Iowa, native was hesitant to pur-

sue the grant. Teaching abroad was not his intended path. But he was inspired by the sacrifices of his grandfather to seize every opportunity available to him. “As scary as it is to think of leaving all I have ever known, I can see no other way around what I consider my duty and responsibility. A duty to use the opportunities allotted to me thanks to a grandfather who had none,” Salazar says. “Manual labor left my grandfather with little feeling in his fingertips and required several surgeries. I thought about the loneliness he must have felt leaving all he had ever known to find a place abundant with opportunity not for himself but for his descendants.” As Salazar pushed himself to pursue this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, St. Ambrose faculty were there to support him through the Fulbright application process. “The most real moment for me was meeting with St. Ambrose faculty and staff, people I had gotten to know very well along the way, and being interviewed honestly by them. Here I stood before faces I trusted, faces I knew would judge me accurately and could determine the direction of my life entirely.”

Brittany Tullis, PhD, interim dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, was one of the faculty members who helped Salazar navigate the application process. She is proud of his tremendous accomplishment of reaching finalist status. “It is a testament to Daniel’s hard work, drive, and dedication as a lifelong learner and global citizen. I know that his time here at St. Ambrose has prepared him particularly well for the mission upon which he will soon embark as a citizen diplomat abroad,” Tullis says.

Salazar attests that his St. Ambrose education has prepared him for the journey he is about to embark on. But he says it’s not just the tangible skills he is taking with him. It’s the values he’s learned about friendship, curiosity, duty, and courage that he hopes to emulate during his time abroad. Since graduating, Salazar has been working as a long-term substitute teacher in his hometown. He is also the state director for the League of United Latin American Citizens in Iowa. He will leave these positions to pursue his Fulbright English teaching assistantship which begins this September. This is the second Fulbright English teacher assistantship awarded to a St. Ambrose student in as many years. Laura Meloy ’22, Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Studies, spent this past year completing her English teaching assistantship in Bulgaria.

Forward Latino calls for meaningful action on immigration and the protection of the human right of asylum

Forward Latino, a national non-profit, non-partisan service and advocacy organization with members and affiliates in twenty-nine states and headquartered in Franklin, Wisconsin issued the following statement regarding the Biden Administration’s announced Executive Action on border security.

National President Darryl Morin issued the following statement:

“Forward Latino continues to call for meaningful immigration reform that will provide for the nation’s security and economy, while still upholding its commitment to the protection of human rights and with it, human dignity. Today’s announced executive action does not meet this standard.

While political unrest, persecution and violence continue to impact immigration flows, the overwhelming number of immigrants coming to the United States do so for econom-

ic opportunity. There is a direct correlation between U.S. unemployment rates and immigration flows. Today, America has a labor shortage of more than 2,000,000 workers, resulting in elevated numbers of immigrants coming to the United States.

If the United States is serious about securing its borders, then it must address the primary driver of these immigration flows. For this reason, Forward Latino calls on President Biden to use his authority to grant parole and work authorization to the undocumented population that have resided in the United States for an extended period of time as well as those who are spouses of United States Citizens. As required by the parole process, these individuals would first need to pass an exhaustive background check before being granted this temporary status.

Granting parole and work authorization to these individuals would not only drastically reduce immigration flows,

but would allow those currently living in the shadows, to fully contribute to the growth of our economy, to stabilize wages which in turn would reduce inflation and lastly, to contribute to the prosperity of all Americans.”

Red, White and Boom! fireworks display set to return July 3

Quad Cities, IA/IL - The annual bi-state Red, White and Boom! will be held on July 3, 2024. Family-friendly activities will take place that evening in downtown Davenport and Rock Island. At 9:30 p.m. fireworks will be shot, in sync to music broadcast on 97X, from two barges in the middle of the Mississippi River.

Spectators can watch from free viewing areas along the riverfront including LeClaire Park in Davenport or Schwiebert Riverfront Park in Rock Island. Bring your own lawn chair.

There will be plenty of activities on both sides of the river for families to enjoy ahead of the fireworks display. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Samantha Mesa: From Family Caregiver to Trailblazing Journalist

As a big sister to five younger brothers and the third of eight, Samantha Mesa has been at the center of stories her whole life. “You can imagine the energy in my house.” Growing up in a Mexican/Irish household in Lafayette, Colorado where she cared for siblings and animals, there was always something going on. Every day at four Mesa would turn on the television to watch Oprah while she and her mom cleaned or prepped dinner. “I was really enamored by Oprah’s ability to interview people and get the background on any topic. She was my window to the world.” The people on the show were superheroes to Mesa. “They would go into these crisis situations and were advocates for the vulnerable. Then they would hold decision-makers accountable and ask, what are you going to do?” That stuck with Mesa as she grew into adulthood, but it wasn’t a clear path to journalism. While still in high school she earned a scholarship to cosmetology school. The class was mostly Hispanic and female, as was most of the staff. However, not everyone there saw her potential. She recalls some non-Latina instructors in particular. “They were like, half of you will drop out, half of you will get pregnant. For those who actually com-

plete this, you’re going to need a better job than working at Walmart when you have babies and your baby daddy leaves you.” Mesa was shocked but didn’t let that deflate her. “It made me. I pushed through and got my cosmetology license.” Her older brother, the first to get a college degree, encouraged her to do the same. Although she persisted, her confidence was rocked by those words. She decided to try modeling in LA. She quickly realized it wasn’t for her. She returned to Colorado and used her license to pursue a degree in communications, political science, and international public policy at the University of Colorado in Denver. While there, her father was diagnosed with stage four inoperable prostate cancer. “You get that phone call, and it takes the breath out of your lungs.” She left school, returning to her parent’s home to help care for her dad. “I worked six days a week and did fundraisers, hair-a-thons to help pay bills.” Sadly, her father passed away after a year. “It’s really traumatizing to see someone go through aggressive chemo and it doesn’t get the job done.” With four younger brothers depending on her widowed mother, Mesa felt compelled to do more. She went back to school with a renewed focus. “It took me five and a half years to finish my undergrad degree and I threw myself into every class. I didn’t want it to be for nothing.” Seeing her dad do labor-intensive jobs in construction with long hours of back-breaking work, yet not have health insurance was impactful. It drove her to work in industries helping the most vulnerable, like correctional facilities. “Hearing all these stories of people being dealt blow after blow since childhood. A lot of them are born into really destructive environments. That was very eye-opening, forming my passion to go into journalism.” Besides her life and work experiences, storytelling became her focus during a study abroad trip to Morocco and Tunisia. “I ended up being in the middle of the Jasmine Revolution and the Arab Spring Uprisings were exploding. I lived with a human rights activist and met a bunch of women rewriting the Tunisian constitution.” That solidified her desire to be a journalist. She returned to the United States and applied for graduate school to get jobs in newsrooms. With a master’s degree from Columbia University, Mesa began a career in televised news. She covered the migrants on the border during Trump’s presidency before her position on the morning newscast at WOI-TV in Des Moines. “I didn’t know much about the Midwest and some of the experiences that have changed me is seeing so many people who care about their community and are working on solutions. I was able to dive in and elevate the change-makers, people that believe in a better future by starting with what’s in front of them; what they can do today.” Mesa interviewed over 250 people who had never told their stories to the media and pushed to feature at least one story from the Latino community every day during Hispanic Heritage Month. “That was amazing because I felt like I was part of something bigger, aligning with people who are working from the

heart with conviction and passion. They’re applying their gifts to projects they’re dedicated to and that’s so inspiring.” In her pursuit of stories, she became one when COVID-19 struck.

Mesa lost hearing in her right ear during a broadcast. That led to months of incapacitation and learning how to function with her new disability. “I got back into broadcasting and tried to be honest with everyone because I couldn’t sugarcoat it, couldn’t fake it. The community was phenomenally gracious and supportive. I became more intentional about telling stories about people with disabilities and sensory experiences. These stories need to be told because it is a chunk of our society that largely gets ignored.” She’s grateful for the love and support she received. “If I would have gone through losing my hearing and didn’t have this platform to elevate community stories, I think it would have been a darker experience.”

As Mesa explores options now that her contract with WOI-TV is complete, she is taking her time choosing her next career move and getting back to some of her old loves, like riding with Escaramuza Quetzalli. She plans to consider Iowa in her future, whether through her journalism, life, or frequent visits to honor her commitments to various upcoming events. One thing is clear; she’ll keep storytelling. “My excitement comes from our stories. They give light to other people who need to hear that no matter what they’re going through, there is hope. I share the highs and lows for that reason.”

The Latina Business Excellence Summit was a great success

In May, over 200 Latinas from Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska came together for the first-ever Latina Business Excellence Summit in Des Moines. The event was the brainchild of Erika Macias, publisher of Hola America News and Hola Iowa with the support of the founding team members: Claudia Schabel, President, of Schabel Solutions Inc, Rocio Hermocillo Tarin, co-founder of Team ELLLA Real Estate, Blanca Plasencia, co-owner of El Fogon and Guacamole Mexican Restaurants, Perlla Deluca, CEO of Southeast Constructors and founder of the Iowa School of Construction. Planning began as a launch for the new JEFAS: Latinas in Business Magazine, the only publication dedicated to highlighting Latina entrepreneurs in the Midwest. As the women talked through their ideas, it was clear the event would be much more than that.

“The goal was to empower and inspire the women. The summit began with networking while attendees sampled coffee, pastries, Peruvian food and Mexican snacks from local shops, grazed a huge charcuterie board, had the opportunity to learn about resources and services for business owners, and purchase items like cosmetics from the MMKL line, born in Storm Lake created by a Latina cosmetic chemist who was featured in the magazine. The time allowed for connections and reunions, the space filled with laughter and high energy. The River Center was electric with photo opportunities in front of marquee letters that spelled out LATINAS IN BUSINESS and JEFAS and beats by DJ Lizz. Later, a panel of Latina entrepreneurs from Des Moines and Iowa City shared their advice and challenges, followed by an uplifting keynote by Miriam De Dios Woodward, CEO of De Dios Consulting. Each speaker brought a unique perspective, collectively sharing over 3 decades of experience owning and growing a business. The event culminated with the unveiling of the first Iowa issue of JEFAS Magazine, and more time to network and take photos on a rotating platform brought by Royalty Events. Based on evaluation responses, attendees are excited for the next one!
