800 personas se unieron para decirle a Donald Trump que él no es bienvenido en Sioux City, Iowa Por Tar Macias El pasado martes 22 de octubre, alrededor de 800 personas asistieron a una protesta pacífica en contra de la visita de Donald Trump a la Preparatoria West en Sioux City, Iowa. La protesta fue organizada por estudiantes actuales y antiguos de la West High School, donde los latinos forman alrededor del 29% de los estudiantes. Francisco Valadez, graduado de la West HS del año 2012, junto con su hermano Luis y su tío Ismael Valadez fueron los organizadores de la protesta.
“Me gradué de West HS, me hermana asiste a la escuela también. Mi equipo y yo, nos motivamos a organizar la protesta porque estábamos preocupados por la seguridad de los estudiantes en West HS y nuestra comunidad,” Francisco Valadez dijo. “Los discursos de Donald Trump causan que sus simpatizantes ataquen verbalmente y físicamente a los participantes de protestas y todo lo que él dice es en contra de las reglas contra acoso escolar de la escuela.” “Creo que la protesta fue un éxito,” Ismael Valadez agregó. “Llegaron más de 800 personas. Unidos como comunidad, hemos demostrado al distrito escolar y Donald Trump que estamos en contra del acoso (Bullying) y las palabras de odio de él que lo producen.” La protesta atrajo participantes de todo el estado de Iowa. Christian Ucles, el director político de LULAC Iowa estaba presente organizando y registrando a la gente para votar. “Lo que vimos hoy fue una demostración de la fuerza latina maravillosa. El poder latino y apoyo de latinos en nuestra propia comunidad,” Ucles dijo con asombro. “Estaba de verdad orgulloso de ver los activistas jóvenes que organizaron esto en cinco días, pero tuvieron mucha gente asistiendo.” Ucles usó la oportunidad para involucrar más latinos en el caucus de Iowa. “Estaba entusiasmado de participar en esto. Inscribimos más de 80 personas para registrarse para votar y 100 personas para ser voluntarios en los eventos futuros,” él compartió. “Era maravilloso ver una comunidad que no eran solo latinos, sino tuvimos apoyo de otra gente también.” María Alcivar, estudiante de postgrado de ISU, llegó desde Ames, Iowa para participar en este evento.
“Llegar hasta Sioux City era un viaje larguísimo, pero lo vale. Era un evento increíble. Tanta gente grande como la gente joven vino para asistir a este evento. Era algo que daba poder ver tanta gente de todas razas unidos para la misma causa,” Alcivar nos contó de su experiencia. Alcivar, Ucles y la familia Valadez están de acuerdo que Trump sirvió de motivador para que latinos finalmente se involucraran más en la política. “Hubo gente de todo el estado de Iowa y algunos de Dakota del Sur y Nebraska. Era increíble. Estoy muy contento que la comunidad por fin se está uniendo. Trump despertó a un gigante dormido,” Alcivar dijo con mucho entusiasmo. “Sioux City nos está demostrando que hay deseo para liderazgo en la comunidad latina…y yo pienso que es la cuestión de convertir el enojo o desilusión de Trump y convirtiendo todo esto en votos,” Ucles agregó. 800 people show up to tell Donald Trump he is not welcomed in Sioux City By Tar Macias Close to 800 people showed up to a peaceful protest against Donald Trump’s visit to West High School in Sioux City, Iowa last Tuesday October 22. The protest was organized by current and former students of West High School. At West HS, Latinos make up about 29 percent of the school’s diverse
population. Francisco Valadez , who graduated from West HS in 2012, along with his brother Luis and uncle Ismael Valadez were the organizers of the protest “I am a former graduate of west high and my sister is a current student and my team and I were motivated to organize this protest because we were worried about the safety of the students at

West High School and our community,” Francisco Valadez said. “Donald Trumps speeches cause his supporters to not just verbally, but physically attack the protesters and everything he says is against the schools anti-bullying policy.” “I think the protest was a success,” Ismael Valadez added. “We had a great turnout of over 800 people. Looking through the crowd you would see a diverse group, united as a community. We as a community, showed the school district and Donald trump that we are against bullying, and his hateful words that produce it.” The protest attracted participants from all over the state of Iowa. Christian Ucles the Political Director for LULAC Iowa was present organizing and signing people up to vote. “What we saw today was an amazing display of Latino strength, Latino power and Latino support among our own community,” Ucles said with awe. “I was really proud to see the young activists who put together something in a five day window and they had amazing numbers.” Ucles used the opportunity to get more Latinos involved in the Iowa caucus. “I was really excited to participate in this. We signed up over 80 people to register to vote and 100 others to volunteer
for future events,” he shared. “It was great to see there was a community there not just of Latinos, but others as well there to support us.” Maria Alcivar, an ISU graduate student, made the trip from Ames, Iowa to be part of this event. “Going to Sioux City was Long but worth it. It was such an incredible event. So many people from old to very young kids were at the rally. It was super empowering to see so many people together black, brown, whites for the same cause.” Alcivar told about her experience. Alcivar along with Ucles and the Valadez family agree that Trump has served as a motivator for Latinos to finally get more involved in politics. “There were people from all over Iowa and some from South Dakota and Nebraska. It was really cool. I’m really happy the community is finally uniting. Trump has woken the sleepy giant,” Alcivar said with enthusiasm. “Sioux City is showing us that there is a yearning for leadership between the Latino community… and I think it’s a matter of turning that anger or disappointment from Trump and turning it into votes,” Ucles added. “Salva Una Mujer” Almuerzo informativo acerca de Cáncer de Mamas en Muscatine Por Anastassia Zvoryguina
Octubre puede ser el mes oficial de Conocimientos de Cáncer de Mamas, pero cáncer no es tipo de enfermedad que uno recuerda solo una vez al año. Cáncer es la enfermedad espantosa que cobra muchas vidas. No hay ninguna persona en el mundo que es inmune a esta enfermedad y es por eso que, para mantenerse saludable por muchos años por venir, es importante tener información correcta. Mucha gente ha escuchado el nombre Gilda’s Club, pero no muchos saben que es y que hacen allí. Gilda’s Club es una organización que ofrece apoyo y educación a la gente que vive con cáncer y sus familias y amigos. Según Gilda’s Club, “Como afiliado de Apoyo para Cáncer somos la parte de empleador más grande de profesionales de salud mental de oncología psicosocial en los Estados Unidos. Nuestra red global trae el apoyo para cáncer de alta calidad a millones de personas que enfrentan el cáncer.” Este grupo de apoyo fue nombrado por Gilda Radner quien trabajó en Saturday
Night Live en NBC y quien falleció de cáncer de ovarios en 1989. Familias y amigos, incluyendo niños, participan en actividades de Gilda’s Club y grupos de apoyo donde ellos aprenden como vivir con el cáncer. Gilda’s Club de Davenport que está ubicado en 1234 E. River Dr. ya tiene muchos años de existencia. Muchos residentes de Muscatine viajaban hasta Davenport buscando a participar en las actividades ofrecidas aquí. Ahora Gilda’s Club llega a Muscatine. Gilda’s Club y Unity Point Health se asociaron y empezaron a ofrecer este grupo de apoyo a los residentes de Muscatine a los principio del año pasado. Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon at Flickinger Learning Center in Muscatine, IA for Hispanic women By Anastassia Zvoryguina October might be official Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but cancer is not kind of disease that one remembers only once a year. Cancer is a scary disease that takes many lives. Not a single person in the world is immune to it and that is why, in order to stay healthy for many years to come, it is very important to have the right information available. Many people have heard the name Gilda’s Club, but not many know what it is and what they do. Gilda’s Club is an organization that offers support and education to people who live with cancer and their families and friends. According to Gilda’s Club, “As a Can-
cer Support affiliate, we are part of the largest employer of psychosocial oncology mental health professionals in the United States. Our global network brings the highest quality cancer support to the millions of people touched by cancer.” This support group was named after Gilda Radner who worked in NBC’s Saturday Night Live and who died of ovarian cancer in 1989. Families and friends, including children, participate in Gilda’s Club activities and support groups where they learn how to live with cancer. Davenport’s Gilda’s Club located at 1234 E River Dr. in Davenport and it has been operating for many years. Many residents of Muscatine made trips to Davenport so they could participate in activities
offered here. Now Gilda’S Club comes to Muscatine as well. Gilda’s Club and Unity Point Health partnered up and started offering this support group to people of Muscatine at the beginning of last year. Since their establishment in Muscatine the organization had offered many workshops and this November 14, 2014 they will offer their Breast Cancer Awareness Luncheon at Flickinger Learning Center in Muscatine, IA for Hispanic women. “Salva Una Mujer” is an event where women can learn more about breast health, screening and care. Participants will learn more about screenings. Also, this event will provide women with resources that are available to help pay for the screenings.
There will presentation by Dr. Collette Hostetler and there will be representatives with important information from the following organizations: Care for Yourself, The Voucher Program, Pink Pass and Komen Quad Cities. All women are invited to come and learn more about taking care of their health because healthy women can take better care of their families. Banquete de Liderazgo Latino en Iowa fue todo un éxito Por Melissa Walker El tercer anual Banquete de Liderazgo Latino en Iowa tuvo un lleno total el pasado sábado 31 de octubre en el salón del Holiday Inn-Airport en Des Moines, Iowa. Líderes comunitarios de todo el estado de Iowa se dieron cita a este gran evento donde se celebran los logros de las personas y organizaciones que realzan a la comunidad Latina de Iowa. “Cada año reconocemos latinos e individuales que apoyan nuestra comunidad, quienes fueron mas allá de lo normal para tomar el papel positivo en crecer el perfile latino en Iowa y mejorar sus vidas,” dijo Joe Enriquez
Henry, el presidente de Consejo 307. Los galardonados este año fueron: ● Premio Builder de LULAC – Janet Weaver, es miembro del Consejo 10 de Davenport. The 2015 Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet was a total success By Melissa Walker The third annual Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet had a full house on Saturday October 31 the Holiday Inn-Airport convention center in Des Moines, Iowa. Community leaders from across the state of Iowa gathered at this great event where they celebrated the achievements of individuals and organizations that empower the Latino community in Iowa. “Each year we recognized Latinos and individuals supportive of our community who have gone above and beyond to play a posi-
tive role in raising the profile of Latinos in Iowa and improving their lives,” says Joe Enriquez Henry, president of Council 307. This year’s recipients were: • LULAC Builder Award – Janet Weaver, a member of Council 10 in Davenport. Weaver, who works as the assistant curator of the Iowa Women’s Archives at the University of Iowa. • Latino Business Person of the Year Award – Miriam De Dios, chief executive officer of Coopera Consulting. • Latino Hero Award – Sgts. Yanira Scarlett, Vince Valdez and David Murillo, all with the

USS Rafael Peralta es el primer Destroyer de la Naval de Los Estados Unidos ser nombrado por Marine nacido en México

El sábado 31 de octubre la Naval de los Estados Unidos bautizó su destroyer (Destructor) con misil teledirigido con el nombre de USS Rafael Peralta. Este buque de guerra fue nombrado con el nombre del Marine que murió en Irak al cubrir una granada con su cuerpo para proteger a otros Marines. USS Rafael Peralta es el primer
navío nombrado por alguna persona nacida en México. Para responder al honor, el presidente nacional de LULAC Roger C. Rocha, Jr., hizo público la siguiente declaración. “LULAC aplaude las acciones de la Naval de los Estados Unidos para bautizar el nuevo destroyer de la naval en honor del sargento Rafael Peralta. Él
nació en México, pero creció en los Estados Unidos y su servicio es el ejemplo de patriotismo profundo que nuestra población de inmigrantes siente hacia este país. Su sacrificio heroico demuestra su compromiso profundo para proteger los ideales que Estados Unidos representa – la libertad e igualdad.” El servicio de Peralta y

LULAC Iowa empieza educación sobre el caucus en todo el estado, campaña de alcance a los latinos Por Melissa Walker La Liga de Ciudadanos Latino Americanos Unidos, Concilio 307, empezó Latino Vote Iowa, la primera campaña de alcance y educación sobre el caucus en todo el estado, y tendrá más entrenamientos en semanas por venir. “Queremos que nuestra comunidad entienda el proceso del caucus y se sientan gratos con el proceso. Es nuestro derecho democrático. Queremos que nuestra gente sepa que no es necesario ser persona involucrada en algún partido para poder participar,” dijo Joe Enriquez Henry, presidente del Concilio 307 y Vicepresidente de LULAC nacional de la región Medio Oeste de los Estados Unidos. LULAC busca motivar entre 10,000 a 20,000 latinos a participar en los caucuses. LULAC Iowa kicks off statewide caucus education, outreach campaign to Latinos

The League of United Latin American Citizens, Council 307 kicked off Latino Vote Iowa, the first-ever statewide caucus outreach and education campaign to the Latino community, and will hold more trainings in the weeks to come. “We want our community to understand the caucus process and to be comfortable with that process. It is our democratic right. We want our people to know that you don’t have to be a party insider in order to participate,” said Joe Enriquez Henry, president of Council 307 and National LULAC Vice President of the Midwest. LULAC wants to encourage 10,000 to 20,000 Latinos to participate in the caucuses. About 200,000 Iowans are expected to participate in the 2016 Iowa Caucuses, both the Democratic and Republican caucuses. “We want to significantly increase our participation in the Iowa Caucuses,” Enriquez Henry said. “We are confident Latinos can be at least 10 percent of the participants on caucus night.” The campaign began on Sunday with a caucus training in Des Moines. Volunteers then knocked on doors in precinct 111 in West Des Moines, where 120 Latinos are registered to vote. Volunteers will return to the area this week to knock on remaining
doors. The next training is from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8 in the Gallery Room at Memorial Union at Iowa State University. LULAC will partner with students from Iowa State for the training. Additional trainings will be held throughout Iowa during the remainder of the year to educate and prepare volunteers. LULAC Council 10 in Davenport will hold their first caucus training on Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm at Los Portales Mexican Restaurant located at 1012 E Kimberly Rd in Davenport. For details on this event visit the LULAC 10 Facebook page. This grassroots campaign will include four field staff and a communications director. LULAC Political Director Christian Ucles and Enriquez Henry will lead caucus trainings to
teach participants about the caucuses, the differences between the Republican and Democratic caucuses, and how to participate. Latino Vote Iowa’s outreach will draw from a pool of about 50,000 registered Latino voters statewide. The campaign will focus on the 14 Iowa counties that have the highest percentage of Latino voters. These counties are: Black Hawk, Buena Vista, Crawford, Dallas, Johnson, Linn, Louisa, Marshall, Muscatine, Polk, Pottawattamie, Scott, Wapello and Woodbury. They represent about 29,500 registered Latinos. This outreach includes 764 precincts of the more than 1,740 precincts in the state. Some precincts in Des Moines already have more than 300 registered Latino voters. The state will be divided into four sections. Each field
campaign staff will be in charge of reaching out to about 6,000 registered Latino voters. “In those counties we have a larger voice, and we will make an impact,” Enriquez Henry said. The campaign includes paid phone calling, mailings and door-to-door canvassing, where volunteers and field staff will talk to Latinos about the caucuses and issues that are important to them in the presidential race. Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos de Iowa “Dale una oportunidad a los Niños y Familias.”

Recientemente el tema de inmigración ha sido explotado por políticos y algunos medios de comunicación creando una atmosfera negativa y resentimiento hacia la población inmigrante en especial hacia los inmigrantes Latinos. Afortunadamente, no todo el mundo se siente de la misma manera, y a pesar de toda la negatividad hay muchas organizaciones y personas que se unen para ayudar a la comunidad de inmigrantes. Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos de Iowa (Iowa JFON por sus siglas en inglés) es una de esas organizaciones que ayuda a los inmigrantes a sentirse bienvenidos en un país extraño y nuevo. “Justicia para Nuestros Vecinos de Iowa es un ministerio basado en la fe que da la bienvenida e invita inmigrantes a nuestras iglesias y comunidades ofreciéndoles servicios legales de inmigración gratis y de alta calidad, educación y abogacía,” April Palma, una de los abogados que trabaja con JFON, explicó. “Servicios de Iowa JFON están disponibles para todos los inmigrantes con pocos ingresos sin importar la raza, genero o religión.” Hace 15 años en enero del 2000 las iglesias de Sioux City, Des Moines y Omaha establecieron el Iowa JFON. Al principio, abogados de Washington D.C viajaban una vez al mes a Iowa para supervisar los eventos de servicios legales y asesorar a los clientes. Muchos voluntarios donaron su tiempo para hacer esos eventos posibles y entrevistar a todos los clientes. Para el año 2001 la organización encontró la manera para emplear un abogado de Omaha que viajaba hasta Sioux City y Des Moines para ayudar con eventos de servicios legales y asesoría. Con el paso de los años el programa se expandió y ahora hay más abogados trabajando con Iowa JFON. Ahora hay abogados trabajando con las comunidades en Cedar Rapids, Columbus Junction, Ottumwa y Decorah. “Hay dos programas especiales que existen en todo el estado de Iowa, uno de
estos programas es para víctimas de violencia domestica y el segundo programa es para niños sin acompañantes que entraron al país el año pasado,” nos informo la abogada Palma. Además de abogados con experiencia, Iowa JFON depende mucho de ayuda de sus voluntarios. “Ofrecemos eventos de servicios legales mensuales donde muchos voluntarios ayudan con los documentos, traducen y ofrecen comida y hospitalidad a nuestros clientes. Además, dependemos de voluntarios en nuestra oficina y mesa directiva donde ellos nos aconsejan sobre las reglas, nos ayudan con recaudación de fondos y otras actividades diarias,” Palma explicó. Ella también agregó que el trabajo de la organización es posible gracias a las donaciones del público. Mucha gente sabe que el año pasado muchos niños sin acompañantes cruzaron la frontera del sur de los Estados Unidos. Según, April Palma, 68,541 niños sin acompañantes fueron detenidos por la patrulla fronteriza. La mayoría de los niños llegaron de Honduras, El Salvador y Guatemala. Después de que la patrulla fronteriza los detuviera, ellos fueron llevados bajo la custodia de la Oficina de Reasentamiento de los Refugiados (ORR por sus siglas en inglés), y ORR les deja ir con patrocinadores. Por lo regular los patrocinadores son padres, tíos, primos de estos niños y etc. que viven en Iowa, por eso desde 2014 alrededor de 407 niños fueron reubicados en Iowa. Iowa JFON quiso ayudar a esos niños que cruzan la frontera huyendo de la violencia de sus países, por eso en septiembre del 2014 ellos establecieron la línea directa. Ellos también pidieron la ayuda de otras organizaciones en Iowa y ofrecieron entrenamiento y servicios de mentor a los abogados privados que estaban dispuestos a tomar esos casos pro bono. April Palma explicó que cada niño detenido por la patrulla fronteriza de inmediato enfrenta el proceso de deportación y ellos reciben una fecha para presentarse en frente de juez en el corte de inmi-
gración federal. “Ellos tienen la oportunidad de explicar al juez porque ellos buscan el permiso de quedarse en los Estados Unidos,” Palma dijo. Ella también dijo que sin representación legal 9 de 10 niños van a recibir el orden de deportación. “Muchos de esos niños califican para Estatus Especial de Inmigrante Menor o Refugiado. Muchos de esos casos requieren la mezcla complicada de leyes familiares y de inmigración y no todos los abogados los conocen bien. Es difícil para esos menores de edad encontrar le representación legal al precio que ellos pueden pagar,” Palma explicó que a estos niños no se les designa un abogado por el tribunal de inmigración. Si no pueden contratar a un abogado u obtener ayuda de Iowa JFON u otra organización, entonces tienen que comparecer ante el tribunal antes de que el juez de inmigración por sí solos. Hasta ahora Palma nos contó que Iowa JFON habló y consultó con 130 niños sin acompañantes para determinar si ellos califican y ahora ellos están ayudando 40 niños con representación completa. Ellos también entrenaron a 35 abogados privados que ahora pueden trabajar con este tipo de casos.

De hecho, hay mucha gente y organizaciones que están tratando de ayudar los inmigrantes a encontrar el camino hacia su Sueño Americano.

Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors “Give Children and Families a Chance.” By Anastassia Zvoryguina Recently the immigration issue has been exploited by politicians and some media outlets thus creating a negative atmosphere and resentment toward immigrants especially to Latino immigrants. Fortunately, not everyone feels the same, and in spite of all the negativity there are a lot of organizations and people who come together and help the immigrant community. Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors (Iowa JFON) is one of those organizations that make immigrants feel welcomed in the new and unfamiliar country. “Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors is a faith-driven ministry, welcoming immigrants into our churches and communities by providing free, high-quality immigration legal services, education and advocacy,” April Palma, one of the attorneys that works with Iowa JFON, explained. “Iowa JFON’s services are available to all low income immigrants without regard to race, gender, or religion.” 15 years ago churches in Sioux City, Des Moines and Omaha established Iowa JFON in January of 2000. At first, attorneys came from Washington D.C. once a month to supervise legal clinics and advise clients. Many volunteers took time to work hard to make legal clinics happen and conduct interviews. By 2001 the organization came up with the way to hire an attorney who was in Omaha, but who also traveled to Sioux City and Des Moines to help with legal clinics and have appointments with clients. Years were passing and the program was expanding and more attorneys were working with Iowa JFON. Now there are attorneys that work with communities in Cedar Rapids, Columbus Junction, Ottumwa and Decorah. “There are two specialty programs that serve the entire state of Iowa, one for the victims of domestic violence and the second for unaccompanied minors,” Palma said. In addition to experienced attorneys, Iowa JFON relies heavily on the help of volunteers. “We hold regional monthly clinics that make extensive use of volunteers to fill out intake documents for clients, translate and interpret, and to provide food and hospitality to our clinic clients. Additionally, we rely on volunteers in our office and on our board to advise us on policy issues, fund-raise and help us with
the day-to-day tasks of keeping and office going,” Palma explained. She also added that the organization works thanks to donations from public. Many people are very well aware of a surge of unaccompanied minors who were crossing the southern border last year. According to April Palma, 68,541 unaccompanied children were detained by the border patrol. Most of the children were coming from Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala. After they are detained by the border patrol they are then transferred to the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) which releases children to sponsors. Many sponsors, children’s parents, aunts, uncles, cousins and so on, live in Iowa; therefore about 407 children had been resettled in Iowa since 2014. Iowa JFON wanted to help those children who cross the border fleeing violence in their countries, so they set up a hotline in September of 2014. They also enlisted the help of other organizations in Iowa and offered training and mentoring to private attorneys who were willing to take cases pro bono. April Palma explained that every child that is detained by the border patrol is
immediately placed into deportation proceedings and they are scheduled with a date to appear in front of judge in a federal immigration court. “They have a chance to explain to the judge why they should be allowed to stay in the US,” Palma told us. She also said that without representation 9 out of 10 children would get an order to be deported. “Many of these children qualify for either Special Immigrant Juvenile Status or Asylum. Many of these cases require a complicated mix of family law and immigration law that few attorneys are familiar with. It is even more difficult for unaccompanied minors to find legal representation at a rate they can afford,” Palma explained that these children are not appointed an attorney by the immigration court. If they can’t hire an attorney or get help from Iowa JFON or another organization then they have to appear in court before the immigration judge alone. Up until now Palma told us that Iowa JFON has talked and consulted with 130 unaccompanied minors to determine if they qualify and actually they are helping 40 children with complete representation. They also have trained 35 attorneys
who can now also work with this type of cases. Iowa JFON is funded by donations and through fund raisers; they would like to invite everyone to attend their upcoming fundraising benefit “Give Children and Families a Chance.” It will take place on Thursday, November 12 from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Dorsey & Whitney Law Firm located at 801 Grand, Suite 4100 in Des Moines, Iowa. The event is open to everyone and the admission is $50 per person. Individuals, organizations, businesses, unions and houses of worship are invited to participate as host donors. Host donors at the $1,000 and above will be introduced during an event. Yes, in the past few months immigrants had been exploited politically by many media outlets and presidential candidates but not everyone believes this divisive rhetoric. In fact, there are a lot of people and organizations that are trying their best to help immigrants to find a way toward the American Dream.
