El final del verano no tiene por qué hacerte sentir triste. Los últimos días cálidos del verano están destinados a ser disfrutados y celebrados. El 15 de septiembre marca el comienzo de la celebración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Es por eso que hay muchos festivales latinos al final del verano. Los “Diarios de ensueño” de Siri García serán presentados en la Galería Ray Frederick MARSHALLTOWN - El artista de Ames y ex-estudiante de MCC, Siri García, comenzará el nuevo año académico convirtiéndose en el primera artista presentado en la Galería Ray Frederick, sala 306, en el campus del Marshalltown Community College. Su exposición, titulada “Dream Diaries” (Diarios de ensueño), se inaugurará con una recepción de 6:45 a 9 p.m. el jueves 12 de septiembre, y se presentará hasta el mediodía del viernes 4 de octubre. García comenta que su programa incluirá principalmente acrílicos y algunas piezas que utilizan objetos punzantes o bolígrafos. García asistió al Marshalltown Community College en 2014-16. Después de graduarse de MCC asistió a DMACC estudiando diseño gráfico. Durante el bachillerato, su plan era asistir a una escuela de arte, pero durante su último año visitó MCC; después de hablar con el profesor de arte Tim Castle, descubrió que MCC era el lugar al que quería ir. “Tim platicó de arte conmigo y me di cuenta de que en realidad sabía de lo que estaba hablando”, comentó García. La exposición de García se enfoca en los mexicano-americanos. Presentará obras de personas y sus experiencias sobre cómo han sido afectadas directamente por
la deportación, así como de inmigrantes que vienen a Estados Unidos para vivir el sueño americano. Cuando se le preguntó cómo eligió el tema de su exposición, dijo que el tema estaba muy ligado a su corazón. “Mi madre fue deportada en la primavera de 2014, justo antes de que me graduara de la escuela secundaria. Las personas que aparecen en las pinturas son compañeros de trabajo y amigos. Esta gente me permitió contar sus historias a través de mi arte. Tienen grandes historias que contar y mejor aún que pintar”. También contará con pinturas de mexicanos-americanos que lo han inspirado. Debido a que este es un asunto tan personal para García, es algo que no ha comentado mucho en el pasado. “Siempre sentí que cuando llegara el momento de mostrar mi arte, sacaría estas pinturas y mostraría dónde empecé. Esto es lo que me hizo empezar a pintar”. “La deportación de mi madre fue lo que me motivó a ser una mejor persona. Es lo que me inspiró y me llevó a ir a la escuela. Vivo mi vida para ser excelente en todo lo que hago”. El amor de García por la pintura es patente en su obra, pero no siempre ha sido lo que quería hacer. “Siempre odié la pintura y preferí el dibujo.” Su profesora de arte de la escuela secundaria

de Ames, Shelli Hassebrock, le animó a intentar pintar. “Pensó que mi estilo se transformaría en pintura. Mi primera pintura fue justo después de que mi madre fuera deportada. La pintura me permitió desahogarme. Mi amor por la pintura creció. Si pudiera seguir pintando mis historias, tal vez podría cambiar vidas, también podría contar las historias de otras personas”. Junto con la exposición de arte, la recepción del jueves 12 de septiembre, de 6:45 a 9 pm en Marshalltown Community College, 3702 S. Center St. Faust Student Union, incluirá una presentación. La tarde incluirá, amigos invitados por García que han sufrido debido a la actual crisis política. Los invitados contarán sus historias en el escenario y García desvelará un cuadro de ellos. La banda de Ames, K.u.b., también actuará durante la recepción. La galería se abrirá para exhibir las pinturas de García durante el transcurso de la noche. Aunque el tema puede parecer controvertido para algunos, García sabe que todo el mundo tiene derecho a opinar. “Cuando exhibo mi arte no me preocupan las reacciones; si así fuera, no lo haría. Hay gente que está pasando por algunas de las mismas cosas que yo y pueden usar mis pinturas como motivación”, comentó
García. “Sé que este es un tema fuerte en este momento, pero así es como superé lo que estoy pasando. Espero que mis pinturas inspiren a otros”. “Estamos muy complacidos de que uno de los ex alumnos favoritos de nuestra universidad regrese y haga este evento”, comentó Castle. “Sé que el trabajo de Siri ha evolucionado enormemente desde su estancia en MCC y estamos muy emocionados de ver sus
nuevas creaciones.” Todas las obras de arte expuestas durante la exposición estarán a la venta, así como las camisetas de Siricasso diseñadas por Siri. The end of summer does not have to make you feel sad. The last warm days of summer are meant to be enjoyed and celebrated. September 15 marks the beginning of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. That is why there are a lot of Latino Festivals going on at the end of summer. And to make it easier for you to enjoy these last couple of weeks of warm weather by attending some of the fun family-friendly festivals that happening in September all throughout the state of Iowa we created a list of them. Dolores Huerta, la renombrada activista de los derechos civiles y de la mujer encabezará el Evento Inspirador 2019 Des Moines, Iowa - La Fundación Chrysalis anuncia que Dolores Huerta, una de las activistas más importantes y sin embargo menos conocidas de nuestro tiempo, será la oradora principal del Evento Inspirador de 2019, que se llevará a cabo el viernes 20 de septiembre de las 11:30 a.m. a la 1 p.m., en el centro de la ciudad, en el Hotel Hilton Des Moines.
Huerta, una legendaria líder laboral estadounidense y activista de los derechos civiles, fue socia igualitaria en la fundación de la Unión de Campesinos de América junto a César Chávez. Juntos, ambos lideraron incansablemente la lucha por la justicia racial y laboral. A la edad de 89 años, Huerta sigue abogando por los trabajadores pobres, las mujeres y los niños.
Dolores Huerta es una leyenda viviente, un ejemplo a seguir, una mujer fuerte que continúa inspirando a las jóvenes generaciones a seguir luchando por los derechos civiles y la igualdad para todos. La película cuenta la historia de Huerta, con imágenes de archivo de Huerta en acción y entrevistas con ella. La presentación gratuita tendrá lugar en el Teatro Sussman en el campus de Drake University de 5:30 p.m. a 7:30 p.m. El Evento Inspirado de Chrysalis se realiza anualmente, atrayendo a más de 500 asistentes para escuchar a oradores que inspiran y al mismo tiempo recaudan fondos para programas que empoderan a las niñas y mujeres de nuestras comunidades. A pesar de que Dolores Huerta ya tiene 89 años, no hay fuerza que pueda detener a esta reconocida activista en su lucha por la igualdad y los derechos civiles. Dolores Huerta, renowned civil and women’s rights activist, to headline 2019 Inspired Event The Chrysalis Foundation announces that Dolores Huerta, one of the most important yet least known activists of our time, will be the featured speaker for their 2019 Inspired Event on Friday, Sept. 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Des Moines Downtown. Huerta, a legendary American labor leader and civil rights activist, was an equal partner in founding the United Farm Workers of America Union alongside Cesar Chavez. Together, the two tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice. At age 89, Huerta continues to advocate for the working poor, women and children. Dolores Huerta is a living legend, an example to follow, a strong woman who still inspires young generations to continue
fighting for the civil rights and equality for all. Based on her six decades of leadership experience, Huerta will share her belief that real change is possible, that every individual has the power to make a difference, and that we must work together to achieve social justice. On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the Chrysalis Foundation is partnering with Drake University Women’s and Gender Studies Department to provide a special viewing of the award-winning film documentary, “Dolores”, directed by Peter Bratt. The film tells Huerta’s story, featuring archival footage of Huerta in action and interviews with her. The free viewing will take place at the Sussman Theater on the Drake Uni-
versity campus from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Chrysalis Inspired Event is held annually, attracting more than 500 attendees to hear from inspirational speakers while raising funds for programs that empower girls and women in our communities. Even though Dolores Huerta is 89 years old now, there is no force that can stop this renowned activist form her fight for equality and civil rights. Today, she is a founder of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and she spends her time traveling across the country participating in campaigns and influencing legislation that supports equality for all and defends civil rights. She is still dedicated to helping to develop leaders and advocating for the working poor, women and children.
Throughout 2019, Chrysalis Foundation is celebrating 30 years of ensuring that girls and women continue to have opportunities to grow, learn, contribute and transform Central Iowa. Sonia Reyes-Snyder : Rompiendo barreras Durante la sangrienta y larga guerra civil de El Salvador, de 1980 a 1992, más de 75,000 personas fueron asesinadas. Sonia Reyes-Snyder se crió en el medio de la ciudad, en San Salvador, la capital de la nación. Su madre tenía dos trabajos de tiempo completo, pero la familia seguía viviendo en la pobreza. Los soldados rondaban por las calles a todas horas. Fue una niñez peligrosa, pero que condujo a Reyes-Snyder a los Estados Unidos. Junto con su padre y algunos otros parientes que ya vivían en California, ReyesSnyder tenía 16 años en 1992 cuando llegó a los EE.UU. como menor no acompañada. “Por primera vez en mi vida, pude ser adolescente”, dice Reyes-Snyder, ahora de 43 años. “Me inscribí en el colegio. Sonia Reyes-Snyder : Breaking Barriers During El Salvador’s long and bloody civil war, from 1980 to 1992, more than 75,000 people were killed. Sonia ReyesSnyder grew up in the heart of it, in San Salvador, the nation’s capital. Her mother worked two full-time jobs, yet the family still lived in poverty. Soldiers roamed the streets at all hours. It was a dangerous upbringing, but one that brought Reyes-Snyder to the United States. With her father and a few other relatives already living in California, ReyesSnyder was 16 in 1992 when she entered the U.S. as an unaccompanied minor. “For the first time in my life, I was able to be a teenager,” says Reyes-Snyder, now 43. “I enrolled in high school. It was great.” After graduating from high school a few years later, Reyes-Snyder learned of educational and professional opportunities available in Iowa. She moved to Des Moines in 1997 and started her first job in advocacy in 2002 as a bilingual shelter advocate at the local Family Violence Center.
Still, she says she felt depressed at that time. She sought therapy, which helped her realize she was queer, a term she hadn’t known before. That was in 2003, and she was married to a man and had two children. Coming out was a traumatic experience as she had to leave her home and community and build a new support system. “Many of the people I was surrounded by turned their backs on me,” Reyes-Snyder says. “They didn’t agree with the fact that I was queer. I had to start over and meet new people as a single mom.” Reyes-Snyder started volunteering at organizations around Des Moines in hopes of building a new network. She continued to ascend professionally, and by 2011 she was a bilingual case manager at Proteus, a nonprofit that assists immigrants and migrants. She was promoted to regional director in 2013. In 2016, Reyes-Snyder was named the executive director of the Iowa Office of Latino Affairs. “A lot of times I’m the only person of col-
or and the only person out as queer,” she says. “A lot of times, we’re forgotten. It’s my job to make sure we are included in the planning.” Through her work with minorities, she recognized there wasn’t a distinct organization for LGBTQ individuals of color. She wanted to change that, and started the Iowa Queer Communities of Color Coalition earlier this year. Reyes-Snyder is proud of her work for marginalized communities, but she beams when talking about her two children, Lizbeth and Yahriel Salinas-Reyes, who are both college students and passionate about activism themselves. “I know what it feels like as a mother to want to give your family the best possible,” says Jeannete Brown, chair of the Iowa Commission of Latino Affairs. “I cannot think of a better example of a Latina immigrant that has broken down barriers of homophobia, class and language to get to where she is.”
Legacy of Service: An advocate for Latinos and LGBTQ immigrants through her work with the Office of Latino Affairs. Earned the 2018 Iowa Latino Leadership Award from the League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa. Serves as the director on the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa board of directors. Co-founded the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame. Serves on a number of local boards, including as president for Al Exito, a Des Moines group that helps develop Latino youth. Siri Garcia’s “Dream Diaries” to be featured in Ray Frederick Gallery MARSHALLTOWN – Ames artist and former MCC student Siri Garcia will kick off the new academic year as the first featured artist in the Ray Frederick Gallery, room 306, on the Marshalltown Community College campus. His exhibit, entitled “Dream Diaries,” opens with a reception from 6:45 to 9 pm on Thursday, Sept. 12, and will be on display through noon Friday, Oct. 4. Garcia says his show will
include mostly acrylics and some pieces using sharpies or pens. Garcia attended Marshalltown Community College in 2014-16. After graduating from MCC he attended DMACC studying graphic design. During high school, his plan was to attend an art school, but during his senior year he visited MCC; after speaking with Art Professor Tim Castle, knew MCC was where he wanted to go. “Tim
talked about art with me and I realized that he really knew what he was talking about,” commented Garcia. Garcia’s exhibit will focus on Mexican-Americans. He will feature paintings of people and their stories of being directly affected by deportation as well as immigrants coming to America to live the American dream. When asked how he chose the theme of his exhibit, he said the subject was very close to his heart. “My

mother was deported the spring of 2014, right before I graduated from high school. The people in the paintings are co-workers and friends. These people allowed me to tell their stories through my art. They have great stories to tell and even better to paint.” He will also have paintings of Mexican-Americans who have inspired him. Because this is such a personal issue to Garcia, it is something he has not discussed a lot in the past. “I always felt like when it was my time to showcase my art, I would bring these paintings out and show where I started. This is what made me start painting.” “My mother being deported was what motivated me to become a better person. It is what inspired me and drove me to go to school. I live my life to be excellent at whatever I do.” Garcia’s love of painting is obvious in his work, but it hasn’t always been what he wanted to do. “I always hated painting and preferred drawing.” His Ames High School Art Teacher, Shelli Hassebrock, encouraged him to try painting. “She thought my style would transform well into painting. My first ever painting was right after my mom was deported. Painting allowed me to let it all out. My love for painting grew. If I could keep painting my stories, then maybe I could change lives, I could tell other people’s stories, too.” Along with the art exhibit, the reception on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 6:45 to 9 pm at Marshalltown Community College, 3702 S. Center St. Faust Student Union will include a presentation. The evening
will include, friends invited by Garcia who have suffered due to the current political upheaval. Guests will tell their stories on stage and Garcia will unveil a painting of them. An Ames band, K.u.b., will be performing during the reception as well. The gallery will be opened to showcase Garcia’s paintings during the course of the evening. Though the subject may seem controversial to some, Garcia knows everyone is entitled to their opinion. “When I display my art I’m never worried about the reactions; if I was, I wouldn’t do it. There are people who are going through some of the same things I am and they can use my paintings as motivation,” commented Garcia. “I know this is a strong topic right now, but this is how I overcame what I’m going through. I hope my paintings inspire others.” “We’re very happy to have one of our college’s favorite alumni come back and do this event,” commented Castle. “I know Siri’s work has progressed immensely since his time here at MCC and we’re excited to see his new creations.” All artwork displayed during the exhibit will be for sale as well as Siricasso t-shirts designed by Siri.
