Salvador “Chavo” Lopez celebrates his 90th birthday by descending the side of a 11 story building in Davenport By Tar Macias On August 25 Mr. Salvador “Chavo” Lopez celebrated his birthday participating on the Big Brothers Big Sisters fundraiser Over the Edge in Davenport, IA. Participants who achieved a minimum fundraising goal had the opportunity to go “Over The Edge” of the historic Hotel Blackhawk located in downtown Davenport. What makes the participation of Mr Lopez special is that he was celebrating his 90th birthday rappelling off the Hotel Blackhawk. The same evening Mr. Lopez family hosted his 90th b-day party at the LULAC Center. Salvador Lopez is a WWII veteran who was born in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1928. His parents Antonia and Federico Lopez, had come to the United States from central Mexico some years before. During the Depression, the family moved from Fairport, Iowa, to Cook’s Point, where they found a close-knit Mexican community. He is one of the three surviving founding members of LULAC Davenport which was established in 1959. Mr Lopez participated in the Over the Edge event to bring financial support for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley and to also bring awareness to the LULAC QC Scholarship program that last month awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to local students. To date the LULAC QC Scholarship program has awarded $585,000 to 970 QC area students. Mr Lopez played a key role in the establishment of a LULAC education scholarship fund for college students in 1978. His efforts are a key element on the fundraising of the LULAC Scholarships every year. Every Friday he manages a group of volunteers to run the Bingo operations out of the LULAC Center in Davenport. He even buys and cook the meat for the tacos they sell during bingo. The only break he takes is to go home for a few minutes to take his dog out. His family wishes he would retire but his commitment to raising money for area students is his passion. Mr. Lopez, very deservingly, will be inducted into the Iowa Latino Hall of Fame this October in Des Moines, IA.

Mundo Pequeño un lugar de aprendizaje bilingüe a temprana edad Por Anastassia Zvoryguina Se ha dicho y escrito mucho acerca de la educación bilingüe. Si bien puede mantener a los niños conectados a la cultura a través del idioma nativo, no es el único beneficio de la educación bilingüe. En el mundo conectado y global de hoy, hablar más de un idioma es una gran ventaja. Además, los niños bilingües tienden a ser más conscientes del entorno que los rodea, se inclinan a ser más colaboradores y algunos investigadores incluso creen que hablar dos idiomas podría protegerlos de la demencia relacionada con la edad. Obviamente, hay muchas ventajas de la educación bilingüe para niños a cualquier edad. Por eso, es bueno saber que la Guardería Mundo Pequeño en Des Moines, IA ofrece este beneficio a los padres que buscan criar hijos bilingües a una edad temprana. Castillo. “Tuve terapeutas de acceso temprano en mi casa que trabajaron con él y aprendí mucho de ellos. Fue entonces cuando

se me ocurrió la idea de poder ayudar a otros niños, por lo que comencé a investigar cómo conseguir un registro para la atención domiciliaria de los niños”. Una vez que obtuvo la información, la Sra. Castillo se registró para poder cuidar a dos niños. Dijo que después de tres años de brindar servicios de cuidado de niños, se corrió la voz acerca de ella y tuvo que comenzar una lista de espera para los padres interesados en tener a sus hijos en una guardería que enseñara español e inglés. Luego cambió su registro a C2, lo que le dio la oportunidad de cuidar a más niños. Sus servicios de guardería fueron solicitados y pronto tuvo que comenzar otra lista de espera. “Las familias han seguido a Mundo Pequeño no solo por la atención genuina que proporcionamos, sino también porque queremos que ellos y sus hijos formen parte de nuestra familia y porque podríamos enseñarles otro idioma”, explicó la Sra. Castillo el atractivo de la guardería bilingüe a los padres. “A los padres les gustó mucho la idea de que sus hijos estén en un lugar donde hay diversidad y de que sus hijos puedan aprender otro idioma a una edad temprana”. Una entrevista con los creadores de “A Quiet Place” Scott Beck y Bryan Woods originarios de Bettendorf Por Jesus Gomez La semana pasada fue el segundo evento anual de “Alternating Currents” que duró del 23 al 26 de agosto. El evento incluyó música, comedia, cine y arte. Hubo más de 100 eventos en diferentes lugares y negocios alrededor del centro de la ciudad de Davenport. La mayoría de los eventos fueron gratuitos y para todas las edades. Algunos de los eventos incluyen Laugh Track, Omg Becky Fest y paradigma de realidad virtual. También hubo una presentación y preguntas y respuestas de la película de terror “A QUIET PLACE” (Un Lugar Tranquilo) con los escritores y productores Scott Beck y Bryan Woods. Hola América tuvo la oportunidad de conocer y entrevistar a estos dos creadores originarios de Bettendorf. 1.¿Qué película tuvo tanto impacto en su vida que decidieron hacer películas y a qué edad? Scott B.: Jurassic Park, porque me pregunté cómo sería si los dinosaurios empezaran a caminar por el I-80. Yo me vestía como Steven Spielberg para proyectos de clase e investigaba lo que se necesitaba para ser un cineasta. Bryan W.: Star Wars, porque las primeras películas que producimos de niños fueron con figuras de acción de Star Wars. 2. ¿Cómo se les ocurrió el monstruo? Scott B.: El monstruo es muchas criaturas diferentes en una. Siempre hemos querido hacer una película muda sin ningún diálogo con un enfoque completo en el diseño de sonido. El poder saber lo que pasaba por su cerebro, sería fascinante. 5. ¿Cuál es tu novelista favorito? Scott B.: Tenemos varios que nos inspiran y nos encanta leer. El escritor que escribió el script de “Aliens” por ejemplo. Cuando lees el script sientes que realmente estás en una nave espacial aislada. Es tenebroso y claustrofóbico a la misma vez. Ellos pueden comunicar sólo con las palabras que escogen. Bryan W.: Stephen King. En actualidad estamos escribiendo una película de Stephen King. 6. ¿Cómo se siente trabajar con Stephen King? Bryan W.: Es emocionante, surrealista y difícil de creer, pero también da miedo porque quieres hacerlo bien, para que él esté contento con el resultado. 7. ¿Qué película están haciendo con Stephen King? Bryan W.: El “Boogeyman”. En realidad es nuestro libro favorito que ha escrito, creemos que es el IT original. En muchos sentidos, puedes trazar una línea clara des-

Mundo Pequeño a place of bilingual learning at an early age By Anastassia Zvoryguina Much has been said and written about bilingual education. While it might keep children connected to the culture through native language, it is not the only benefit of bilingual education. In the connected and global world of today, to know more than one language is a big advantage. Also, bilingual children tend to be more aware of the environment around them, they incline to be more collaborative and some researchers even believe that speaking two languages might protect from age related dementia. Obviously, there are many advantages of bilingual education for children at any age. That is why, it is good to know that Mundo Pequeño Childcare in Des Moines, IA offers this advantage to parents looking to raise their children bilingual at an early age. Mundo Pequeño, a state registered child care located at 1922 SW 1st Street in Des Moines, IA, is where children receive early childhood education in Spanish. Children of between six weeks of age and up to 5 years old become native speakers of both Spanish and English. Now Mundo Pequeño accepts up to 59 babies, toddlers and preschool students, but 10 year ago the founder Lupita Castillo started Mundo Pequeño registering to provide childcare to two children. “I came up with the idea because my child has special needs,” Ms. Castillo explained. “I had early access therapists come to my home to work with him and I had learned a lot from them. That is when that idea came to mind to be able to help other kids and so I started to do some research of how to get a registration to homecare for children.”

Once she informed herself, Ms. Castillo registered to be able to care for two children. She said that after three years of providing childcare services, the word about her got out and she had to start a waitlist for parents interested in putting their children with a childcare provider that teaches Spanish and English. Soon she changed her registration to C2 which gave her a chance to take care of more children. Her childcare services were sought after and soon she had to start another waitlist. “The families have followed Mundo Pequeño because of not only the genuine care we provided, {but also because] we want to make them and their kids a part of our family and because we could teach them another language,” Ms. Castillo explained the attraction of bilingual childcare to parents. “The parents really liked the idea of their kids being in a place where it was very diverse and the idea [of their kids] being able to [learn] another language at a young age.” Last year Mundo Pequeño moved to a bigger location which allows for more children to be accepted and full implementation of the Spanish Immersion Learning Center. In addition to the expansion, Lupita Castillo now employs three more caretakers. “All the employees here have CDA and have the basic classes down,” Ms. Castillo assured perspective parents. She also added that employees of Mundo Pequeño take the safety of children very seriously. They have plans in case of fire or tornado and all employees know how to administer CPR and First Aid. In addition, to assuring the safety of every child in their care, employees of Mundo Pequeño also pride themselves in offering healthy food op-

tions to the children. “We cook every day for the kids we do not provide frozen food or in cans for the kids,” Ms. Castillos said, adding that there are fresh fruits and vegetables available to children for meals and snacks. Children that are enrolled in this childcare learn in Spanish. Ms. Castillo said that each class has its schedule and plan and they do everything in Spanish. Since more parents are learning of the benefits of a bilingual education for children, many are looking for a child-

care that would provide bilingual education as part of their services. Mundo Pequeño offers this type of service to parents in the Des Moines area. An interview with “A Quiet Place” creators and Bettendorf natives Scott Beck and Bryan Woods By Jesus Gomez Last week was the second annual “Alternating Currents” event which was from August 23 to August 26. The event included music, comedy, film, and art. There were more than 100 events indoors and outdoors at different venues all around downtown Davenport. Most of the events were free of charge and for all ages. Some of the events included Laugh track, Omg Becky fest, Paradigm virtual reality. There was also a screening and Q&A of “A QUIET PLACE” with the writers and movie makers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods. “Hola America” got a chance to meet them and interview the Bettendorf natives. 1.What movie made such impact on your life that you decided to go into making movies and what age were you? Scott B.: Jurassic Park. After watching it I would wonder what it would be like if dinosaurs started wondering around on I-80. I also dressed like Steven Spielberg for a class project and researched what it takes to be a filmmaker. Bryan W.: Star Wars, because as kids our first movies were with Star Wars action figures. 2. How did you come up with the monster? Scott B.: The monster is many different creatures fused together. We’ve always wanted to make a silent film without any dialogue with a complete focus on sound design. Making sound the scariest tool in your tool box. Bryan W.: We always try to think of the scariest scenario we can come up with. *When asked about the monster’s origin they said they could not say much about this topic because they are currently working on a sequel. But, the only thing they could say is to look for clues in the newspaper clipping shown throughout the movie. 3. Why did you use a corn field? Scott B.: Every script we write we think; could this be in Iowa? We grew up here and

we don’t see this area often represented on screen so it’s always fun to find those times when you can put the area that you love on screen. We find that “A QUIET PLACE” was the perfect movie for it. Having the movie being filmed on a farm in New York they had to buy millions of dollars of corn that way the corn was 10 ft. tall and it looked scary and intimidating. 4. If you could sit down and have a conversation with anyone who would it be and why? Bryan W.: I would talk to Alfred Hitchcock who has made some of my favorite movies and has a huge body of work. I have yet to see a bad movie of his. Scott B.: Charlie Chaplin. When he started making movies way back he started by telling stories without making a sound. He had full command of his audience and was able to deliver his movies time and time again. Bringing a lot of emotions to people from comedy to heartwarming drama. To pick his brain would be fascinating. 5. Who’s your favorite novelist? Scott B.: We have some inspirational ones. We love to read the draft of alien. The writer wrote the script in such a way that when you read the script you feel like you really are on an isolated space ship. It’s scary and claustrophobic and they can communicate that just on the way they chose their words. Bryan W.: Stephen King. We’re actually writing a Stephen King movie right now. 6. How does it feel like to work with Stephen King? Bryan W.: It’s exciting, surreal, and hard to believe but also scary because you want to do well so he’s happy with it. 7. What movie are you working on with Stephen King? Bryan W.: “The Boogeyman”. It’s actually our favorite book he has written. We believe it’s the original IT. In many ways

you can draw a clear line from the Boogeyman to IT. Scott B. It’s something he wrote in early on and it’s very raw. We would like to thank Bryan Woods and Scott Beck for giving us this interview. Also, we would to thank the directors of “Alternating Currents” for bring us this event and making it possible for the community and youth to experience such a variety of the arts.
