The “Faith, Beauty, and Devotion” exhibit will be held at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School and open to the public from Saturday, September 16, at 7:30 pm, through Saturday, December 16, 2023.

The exhibition includes a program of conferences, panels, dinners, and meetings. Detailed information will be published on the Belen Jesuit Preparatory School website.

Among the highlights of the exhibition are:

Spencer-Churchill Estate Devotional Act, Attributed to Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Wildens, Circa 1616, Oil on canvas. This piece was acquired by Vittorio Frascione, grandfather of Gandolfo Vannini, fourth-generation art dealer and owner of the Frascione Art Gallery, when it was auctioned by Christie’s on October 29, 1965, as lot 41, along with the Spencer- Churchill. Notable members of the Spencer-Churchill family include Sir Winston Churchill and Lady Diana, Princess of Wales.

Other notable pieces include a tempera and gold panel work by Nicolò di Pietro (Siena, ca. 1420) and Francesco de Zanino and Zanino di Pietro (Venetian School, 15th century); a piece in tempera and gold leaf on parchment by Pacino de Bonaguida (Florence, ca. 1340); several works in tempera on panel by Ludovico Urbani; oil on canvass portraits by Giuliano Bugiardini and Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio (Florence); and various oils on canvas works by Jacopo Tintoretto (Venice, 16th century), Louis Finson (Bruges, ca. 1607), Guercino (Bologna, ca. 1640), Circle of Caravaggio (Milan, 17th century), and Francesco Botti (Florence, Baroque).

“This extraordinary opportunity to co-exhibit these paintings will focus on the cultural context of the works and how those circumstances impacted their creation. It will highlight the influences they exerted on the artists during the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, as well as the patronage, the symbolism, and the provenance of the compositions,” says Sylvie Daubar-San Juan, director of the Humanities department and director of the Olga M. and Carlos A. Saladrigas Art Gallery at Belen Jesuit Preparatory School.
