reetings! There have been major changes around the Hart household since last month. We’ve moved from The Heights to Oak Forest. I know, not a long move but it was a big move for us. We’ve downsized from a two-bedroom cottage to just two rooms plus a bathroom. There were a lot of personal and family treasures that we had to decide whether to take with us, put in storage or give away. Cindy and I aren’t hoarders but we had accumulated a lot of stuff over the past 15 years living in one place. So, we are moved now but still settling in. Cindy is still unboxing and deciding where to put or hang some of our treasures that we were able to take with us. Our basenjis and our Tibetan spaniel are also getting used to their new quarters. The official address is still on West 19th Street, so that at least hasn’t changed. Spring is fully here and with it a bunch of events and activities. Check out the event briefs in the front of the magazine and the calendar in the back. We have several new advertisers who are featured in this month’s issue. When you visit them, be sure to mention that you saw them in Natural Awakenings. So, from the Hart Family and the whole Natural Awakenings Houston Team, have a most Happy Spring and remember as you go about your daily life, be kind. It usually doesn’t cost anything and it may just make someone’s day.

What makes me happy

Y

ou have more than 55,000 thoughts each day. Many are the same thoughts over and over again. Every single one is an affirmation; this also includes everything that you say. By reducing your negative thoughts and words and increasing the positive one, you can reshape your life. Expecting a better day helps to create a better day. This month’s affirmation can help create a better life.

I am happy and am discovering what makes me happy.

Deciding to be happy is the first step. But what does happy mean to you? Is it a new car? Freedom from debt? Watching your children grow? A promotion? Or is it a new attitude? Taking time to explore your definition of happiness helps you to find or achieve it. Then discover what makes you happy and take steps to incorporate that into your life. And don’t forget to be open to the unexpected moments of happiness! The only thing that you are guaranteed in life is this moment. Working with positive affirmations can radically change your mindset. Say them and write them repeatedly with the feeling that they are your truth. You have the power to make great changes in yourself and the world. I know this is true because I have made huge changes in my life by changing my thoughts. he Heights is not just West 19th Street. On the corner of Lawrence Street and West 22nd, under the clock tower is Kraftsmen Baking. The building was originally a textile factory built in the 1890’s. It still has a 19th century industrial feel but is bright and cheery with lots of windows and long white curtains. The bakery café serves coffee, tea, baked goods plus breakfast and lunch. They are open until 6 pm. Cindy and I decided to try their quiches. Yes, real men do eat quiche. She chose the southwest quiche and I chose the vegetable. They both came with a salad. Mine was very light and fluffy with a mild creamy texture. Cindy reports hers was scrumptious and very smoky. The salad featured a variety of lettuces with a cherry jalapeno vinaigrette dressing. The café is only a small part of Kraftsmen’s business. They also sell their bread and baked goods wholesale and supply many of the area’s finest restaurants with both breads and desserts. Next time you are in The Heights, plan to drop by Kraftsmen for a cup of coffee, a snack or a full meal. Kraftsmen Baking, 611 W 22nd Street, Houston, TX 77008. kraftsmenbaking.com

018 marks the 125th birth anniversary year of one of the pioneering fathers of Yoga in the West, Paramahansa Yogananda, author of the modern spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, and subject of the highly acclaimed documentary AWAKE: The Life of Yogananda. On Friday, April 6, 2018 at 7 p.m., Brother Bhumananda, a longtime monk of the Self-Realization Fellowship Order, founded by Sri Yogananda, will visit Houston to give a public lecture entitled “Finding Inner Peace through Meditation.” The public lecture will be held at Unity Church at 2929 Unity Drive, Houston, TX 77057. In his talk, which is based on the teachings of Sri Yogananda, Brother Bhumananda, who is also the minister in charge of the SRF Encinitas Temple in Encinitas, CA, will offer insights and practical advice on how yoga meditation works in one’s life, helping to turn the “searchlight of the senses” from the outer to the inner realm. The public lecture will be followed by an informal reception in which newcomers are invited to learn more about the teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda as well as about the inspirational services and meditations at the Houston Center of Self-Realization Fellowship. ur vibrational “point of attraction” is the emotional WHY we keep repeating the same experiences. Dr. Ernest Holmes taught “CHANGE YOUR THINKING, CHANGE YOUR LIFE.” But how do we change our thinking when it seems so automatic? When we seem stuck in anger or fear or grief!!! The book, Ask and It Is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks shares 22 Methods geared toward shifting our emotional vibration which then changes our thoughts and point of attraction. When we understand the emotional scale and use even a few of these simple methods, we can move ourselves from anger, depression or fear, to hopeful, optimistic or joy, AND MORE. Join Rhonda Lynn Toppel, RN for four Sundays in April, starting on April 8 from 1 p.m. to 4 pm to explore these methods of real self-empowerment. Cost: $120.00 for the classes. ania Galindo’s spiritual transformation started 12 years ago. It took a long time for her to get a deeper understanding of herself and how she should help others, but it is her true calling. Vania firmly believes that we all must heal, change, improve and forget all the negative things we carry in our heart. As founder of cbbaradio.com – radio/tv online she came to realize how much we need to grow and understand each other but mostly the importance of being loyal to ourselves. During her pilgrimage in Santiago de Compostela the word “Sanando” or healing came to her. This is why Sanando Con Vania is the name of her practice. It is a place of service to receive therapy such as Reiki, meditation, chakra balancing, or life coaching. She is certified with Dr. Brian Weiss who help her discover her passion which is healing through hypnosis. If you would like to learn more about Healing with Vania or would like to participate in a therapy of liberation and opening of your heart which will transform your life completely visit her website or call her today.

Whole Grains Help Us Eat Less When overweight adults exchange refined grain products such as white bread and pasta for whole-grain equivalents, they tend to feel full sooner, eat less, lose weight and experience a reduction in inflammation, the journal Gut reports. Researchers from Denmark’s National Food Institute and the University of Copenhagen studying 50 adults at risk for Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease found that test volunteers realized these benefits by eating whole grains, and rye in particular.

A Harvard study of 325 women undergoing fertility treatments found that those consuming the most produce high in pesticide residues, such as strawberries, spinach and grapes, were 18 percent less likely to become pregnant and 26 percent less likely to have a live birth compared to women eating the least amount of pesticide-laden produce. Study co-author Dr. Jorge Chavarro suggests that women trying to conceive should eat organic produce or low-pesticide choices like avocados, onions and oranges.

YOGA NIDRA

THE SLEEP BRACELET Wearers have experienced:

· Falling asleep faster · Increased quality sleep · Waking up more refreshed

A new, and ancient, way to healing and wholeness

D

o you desire to improve your health by increasing energy, relieving stress, increasing mental clarity, improving and restoring healthy sleep patterns, easing tension, balancing the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems, and increasing your immune function? Would you believe this is all possible with a guided meditation called Yoga Nidra? Yoga Nidra is an ancient, integrative relaxation meditation that uses the biological processes of sleep, and a series of body, breath, and awareness techniques, to allow the innate healing potential of the body to be released. If one of your favorite yoga poses is Savasana, or Corpse pose, then Yoga Nidra will come effortlessly for you. The hardest thing to do in Yoga Nidra is to not fall asleep! Yoga Nidra also has the potential for increasing well-being by transforming emotions and thinking patterns, improving mood, and can even create positive new thinking patterns and reduce self-limiting beliefs. Getting stuck in old thinking patterns can be hard to shake, especially if they are deeply rooted, and with Yoga Nidra, new ways of thinking and relating are possible. Gena Davis, certified as an Amrit Yoga Nidra™ facilitator, believes that “Yoga Nidra is a powerful healing modality, addressing the physical, emotional, mental, and subtle bodies to facilitate healing and transformation. If you experience stress, then Yoga Nidra can help. Everyone can benefit from Yoga Nidra, even expanding you into the awareness of wholeness and the experience of your true nature.” Gena offers Yoga Nidra at the Houston Ayurveda Wellness Center, 3222 Mercer Street, Houston 77027, on Mondays 5:30-6:30 pm and Thursdays 11 am-noon. Sessions are $20. Private sessions are also available. For more information and to contact Gena, please see GenaDavis.org. If you desire to grow into your full potential, come and experience Yoga Nidra.

Honor Your Word

We lie to ourselves more than anyone else does. It is true that our word, our commitment, our agreement with ourselves and with others is a vital energy source of our confidence. To stay focused and make progress, and not become your own worst enemy, look at where you have given your agreement to yourself or to others and check whether or not you are keeping your word. Renegotiate, reposition and go for it again in a more energized way.

Training Our Mind to See Progress by Tina Marie St.Cyr

L

earning simple, yet profound, tools that can help us shift our mental and emotional states and allow us to take our power back from distractions, outside negative influences, and spiraling worst case mentality help us lead energized and happy lives. And like, with any tool, be it a tool in the kitchen drawer, garage toolbox or desk drawer, we must first reach for it and pick it up in order to use it. A tool I pick up and use time and time again is the mental equation that “Progress = Happiness”. It has been a long-standing mantra I have used to shift my mental and emotional states when worry begins to creep in. It is a simple saying yet, when applied in the moments when our self- sabotaging mind seeks to have us focus on what is going wrong, what is not happening fast enough or what is too much to bear, it becomes the lifeline that we can easily use to pick ourselves back up out of habits of worry. The simple, yet profound strategies and tools I share here have helped thousands of people take their power back and create stellar, worth high five celebrating progress in their lives. It is my hope these tools will also help you.

Have a Daily Plan

Even the most ‘go with the flow’ person agrees that there is energy in a daily plan. The joy of the check mark is real… and we can use it as fuel to create steady progress. Monitor your wins, look to see what you are accomplishing and not only those things you are not accomplishing. Start your day with what is working, what is great and what you are grateful for and you will be able to fuel the rest of your daily plan with positive energy.

Breaking Bad

Bad habits can drain us and leave us feeling confused, spent and hopeless. Bad habits, you know yours of choice, can appear in any area of our lives; health, money, relationships, career, business and even spirituality. Most often people identify a bad habit as one that wastes a resource, like time, money or health. Look around, inventory your bad habits and get a plan to gain control back from

Keep Healthy Boundaries

When we let our own self honoring boundaries go, we give our power away and sabotage our own progress. Knowing your own life path, honoring your core values, and aiming at what you want to create and achieve for yourself is the first priority. Even if you have a family and think, “Well I have to take care of others”… it is 100% in your core values to love your family so that is a priority which honors you. We are asked to take pause when the amount of time and energy we give into one area depletes the fulfillment in another. At the end of the day, when we honor our boundaries and honor the others in our lives, we create harmonious relationships … and that equals progress. Focus on your progress. Train your mind to see forward movement, no matter how slight. From this perspective, more even better things will come, more energy will flow through you and you will feel so much happier. It is a journey and you have control on how you see your world. Whichever mental state shifting tool or strategy you discover most lights you up, decide now to give that tool proper investigation, practice and place in your habits. I guarantee that your life WILL SHIFT. New, more aware perspectives will emerge. Use them and share what you notice on our social media sites linked from our website at www.tinamarie.com Come in for your Energy Orientation Assessment to see if you are living your authentic energy style. Let Nature Comfort You by Sarah Gish

here is nothing as exhilarating as standing in a huge expanse of natural beauty and feeling connected to all that is. I felt that way when I was at Joshua Tree National Park a few years back with a friend – we couldn’t see any other people or cars and there were no cell phones to stare at, no computer screens to draw us in. It was a magical moment. I get glimpses of that moment even when I experience nature on a smaller, less dramatic scale. At least once a day, I take the time to step outside and soak it in – REALLY listen and look and connect -- and I can sense my body rhythm slowing down and my mind feeling at peace. “Earthing” is a great way to do this quickly. Place your bare feet on the ground and close your eyes and connect to the earth’s energy for several minutes. Richard Louv coined the term “nature deficit disorder” in his groundbreaking book, Last Child in the Woods, which linked the lack of nature in today’s wired world to some of the most disturbing childhood trends, such as the rises in obesity, attention disorders, and depression. Lack of nature affects adults the same way. Connecting to screens and not trees takes a toll on all of us – body, mind, and spirit. Why is it that nature comforts us which in turn reduces

depression and increases health? There are many reasons but I believe the most important reason is that it connects us to ourselves – we are natural living creatures, just like the trees, birds, sky, animals around us. As Mary Oliver wrote in her poem “Wild Geese,” – “Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting -- over and over announcing your place in the family of things.” Nature is our family and communing with it is like coming home. This article is part of an ongoing series in which I discuss the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” that are at the heart of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project (see more about the project and the “12 Ways” here: www.IgniteYourOwnLife.com). Each month, I will explore one Way and I will also suggest a site in Houston to visit that I love and that connects to the concept. I believe in not only understanding these 12 ways and words in your head and in your soul, but also experiencing them first-hand. For April, my focus is Way #4: “Commune with nature. (commune)” and the Houston venue I suggest that you visit is the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center (www.HoustonArboretum. org), which is a 155-acre nature sanctuary adjacent to Memorial Park with a beautiful new entrance at 183 W. Loop South. There are miles of trails and ponds and fields and it’s my favorite hideaway when I need to plug back into the earth. Sarah Gish is an igniter, a connector, an artist, a mother – and much more! See her work at www. GishCreative.com and contact her at sarah@ gishcreative.com and 713.492.1173. INDIGENOUS WISDOM Elders Urge Us to Reimagine Life by Anita Sanchez

F

Chris Carpentier

irst, 27 indigenous elders from 23 North American tribes, two African tribes, a Tibetan Buddhist and a Sami from Finland gathered at Turtle Mountain, in Dunseith, North Dakota, in 1994. Recently, 13 elders from 10 tribes from Russia, Columbia, South Africa and the U.S. gathered in Kauai, Hawaii. Other such gatherings, too, are participating in a shared prophecy supporting world salvation. They offer humanity four sacred gifts of wisdom rooted in their life experiences. This is our invitation to receive them.

Power to Forgive the Unforgivable

Forgiveness is releasing ourselves from the prison of pain, hurt or mistreatment. It takes courage and self-love to do this. The reward of this act is freedom to use our energy to create what is life-giving to our self and the lives of those we touch.

This is a time for us all to become and remain united and steadfast, repairing the world from the misuse of power and greed. When we choose to stand in the circle of unity, there is strength. Each of us has an important part to play in the circle of life to sustain precious relationships among people, Earth and spirit for ourselves, our children and future generations.

Power of Healing

Indigenous elders tailor their healing practices to the whole human being,

using good medicine, defined as anything or anyone that brings into positive alignment the spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. Healing can take many forms, based on tradition, the healer, patient and nature, yet four basic elements or practices are consistent: listening, supportive relationships, unconditional love and committing to creative, positive action.

Power of Hope Hope springs from the choice to tap into an infinite energy source. It may not be understood by modern science, but indigenous wisdom keepers behold an inner certainty of something bigger than us all. When we open ourselves to hope, it is possible to release the pressure and desire to try to know something about everything, and instead free our imagination to create expansive possibilities. Anita Sanchez, Ph.D., is a transformational leadership consultant, speaker, coach and author of the new book, The Four Sacred Gifts: Indigenous Wisdom for Modern Times, from which this was adapted. Known internationally as a very inspiring teacher full of wisdom, clarity, and compassion, Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien easily engages people of all ages, cultures, religions, and backgrounds, and helps them to discover more about who they really are, transform all stress and conflict in daily life, and return to the Awake already within each person. Based on her own personal experience, she reminds readers that our goal is not just to recognize ego but to fully realize the source and nature of it, break the system of ego, and live truly happy and free in any situation. In Awake, ego doesn’t exist; in ego, Awake cannot appear.”You are not the voice in your head, or the emotions, or the stress... You are what can recognize the voice, the emotions, and the stress. You are Awake.” -- Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien. Available on Amazon.com
