reetings! As we slide into summer the days get longer and hotter, to take a line from The Lion King, “There’s more to see than can ever be seen. More to do than can ever be done.” There are so many fun and exciting things to do in this vibrant city of ours. Many of them listed in the calendar in the back of this issue of Natural Awakenings. There are also many challenging things that must be done. For us, among them are looking for another affordable place to live and dealing with the effects of the Canadian Paper Tariff on our business. Naturally, the fun things are not a problem. Even if there are two that happen at the same time and we have to choose, it’s good either way. For the challenging things, I’d like to share a few of the things we do that help us overcome them, or at least cope with them. ■ Focus on the present. Yes, we remember the past and plan for the future but it’s possible to get so weighted down by mistakes or bad choices you have made or worry about what might happen that you can’t enjoy the present or even function in the present. ■ Be thankful for what we do have. We have a roof over our heads and a car that still runs. We have a pack of four dogs that give us unlimited love. We have the best little healthy living magazine in the city, and you our readers. We have each other. I’m reminded of what a good friend once told me, “I got out of bed this morning on two good legs. It could have been otherwise.” ■ Do the things we can do to make things better. Some things you just have to accept but some things can be changed and working toward making those changes give you hope. ■ Set aside time each day for things that are important to our souls. Take a little time each day to do one fun thing, to play. Take time to tell each other that we love each other. Take time each day for a spiritual practice. Take time to keep in touch with friends. This isn’t a complete list or a perfect list but if you find that one of the things we do also works for you then you have one more coping tool in your tool box. So, as you go about your days in the heat and the traffic that is Houston in the summer, remember to be kind. It doesn’t usually cost anything, and it may just make someone’s day.

Bright blessings,

words from unity

affirming naturally

The Stories We Tell By Rev. Michael Gott - Senior Minister, Unity of Houston his week I spent about twelve hours in pain of my own making—pain that was completely based upon a lie. It was futile. And unnecessary. My partner said something over dinner that he meant one way and I took another. Rather than checking out his intention right then, I held onto it. Mulled it over. Ruminated. Stewed. By By Rev. Michael Gott the time I asked him about it the next morning, I was not in a good place. I was convinced that I had done something that disappointed him and that he was resentful and hurt over it. None of that ever happened. Except in my head. Why do we do this? I’m going out on a limb here and taking a guess that we all still do it from time to time, no matter how many workshops, 12-step meetings, or therapy sessions we’ve had. We believe our own perceptions, forgetting that we filter everything through our entire life’s experiences, both conscious and unconscious. The psychological term “shadow” refers to all the unconscious and disowned parts of ourselves. It tells us stories about events in our lives, making them mean something they don’t mean —usually reinforcing a childhood belief in our own inadequacy and “not enough” feeling. How do we change it? Well, it will never completely go away, but the best antidote to our false storytelling is to become open and vulnerable with each other and ask questions. The more we are willing to reveal ourselves to each other, the less power these made up stories will have in our lives. Spirit has gifted us and designed us for lives of joy, fulfilment, and love. Isn’t it time we gave up the stories?

Relax by Doyle Ward ou have more than 55,000 thoughts each day. Many are the same thoughts over and over again. Every single one is an affirmation; this also includes everything that you say. By reducing your negative thoughts and words and increasing the positive ones, you can reshape your life. Expecting a better day helps to create a better life. The only place we have to take action or make changes is the present. It’s midsummer! The time of year kids are out of school and many people take vacations. We want to maximize our time off, so sometimes we overschedule activities and our vacations. Often, we fill our evenings and weekends with outdoor sports and other activities. That’s all good, but do you find yourself scheduled so tightly that you can’t even enjoy that playtime? Perhaps it’s also a good time to have at least a couple of weekends that allow you to just do what you want as you want to do it, even one day can help. We all have commitments that have to be kept, just try to make sure you make a commitment to yourself to enjoy some of that time off. Relax and let life flow for a few minutes or as long as you can.

Arctic Healing Cryo

“A

rctic Healing Cryo” is owned by Larissa Steinruck, who is originally from Russia. From an early age she was conditioned by her parents and grandparents to be more inclined towards non-traditional medicine to heal the body. After graduating from a university in Russia she immigrated to USA. Larissa got involved in health and fitness industry and has been a fitness trainer for the past 10 years. A couple of years ago Larissa has developed chronic lower back pain and was prescribed an anti-inflammatory medication to relieve the inflammation that caused that pain. The medication temporarily helped, however, since she trains and works out regularly and lives an active lifestyle, the pain came back. At this point, she started searching for alternative methods for pain and inflammation relief and this is when she came across Cryotherapy. After a month of Cryotherapy, 90% of the back pain was gone making her a big advocate of the Cryotherapy treatment. Not relying on medications permanently and being able to eliminate pain by using non-invasive techniques is the way to live. Arctic Healing envisions itself to be a premier provider of Cryotherapy and Compression therapy services. They currently offer Whole Body Cryotherapy, Localized Cryotherapy, Cryo Facials and Compression Therapy. If you suffer from pain, inflammation or swelling cryotherapy may provide the relief you seek. Visit their website for more information or to schedule an appointment. ola means grandmother in Filipino culture which is what all her children and grandchildren call Carmelita Shah and the recipe for the hot sauce comes from her family in the Philippines. In 2015, Carmelita entrusted the recipe for her secret hot sauce to her son, Taufeek Shah. Taufeek started sharing it with friends and then one day he brought it in for a food day at his full-time job. Everybody who tried it said it was amazing and wanted to buy it. So, he started Lola’s Fine Hot Sauce to produce a quality hot sauce that’s truly unique and inspiring; essentially a hot sauce for everyone. Lola’s is proudly made using all natural, non-gmo ingredients which as 100% vegan and designed to go with any diet. This is an opportunity to have heart-to-heart conversations with those with differing views about current hot button issues affecting our country, our community, our church and ourselves. Each session will begin at 6:30 pm in Wallet Hall with a potluck and time for connection and will end at 9:00 pm. Come join the PeaceMakers as we delve into our hearts and souls. How can we work together to find common ground and heal divisions? Join us for an important conversation on this topic as we seek to understand different points of view. Our goal is to reveal, respect, and connect. Friday, July 13 – Women’s Issues Are there ways the further expansion of women’s rights can complement traditional structures in society, or are the two destined to be in conflict? What is your aspiration for women and their personal power? While some call for further changes toward greater equality, others raise cautions about erasing any gender distinctions in an attempt to “make everything the same.” Join the conversation. Friday, August 10 – The Role of Guns in our Society What are your biggest concerns about guns and responsibility? This conversation focuses on our own personal experience with guns and how these experiences have shaped out opinions. This conversation seeks to help us develop a deeper understanding of the opportunities and challenges surrounding gun ownership.

afé TH is a cozy, colorful little Vietnamese restaurant located in East Downtown. One wall is covered with black and white photos from Vietnam and the other with a wildly colorful mural. They are open for lunch Monday through Friday and dinner on Thursday and Friday. When I dropped in for lunch there were some Sinatra tunes playing softly in the background that really brought back some good memories for me. In addition to their meat dishes, they offer five vegan dishes. I chose the Vy-gan Phở (pronounced: vegan fuh). Cindy and I were introduced to phở during a tour of Vietnam we took with the Houston Outdoor Learning Academy, and we never pass up a chance to enjoy some when we dine at a Vietnamese restaurant. Phở is a popular street food in Vietnam with a rich broth, rice noodles, vegetables and either chicken, beef or tofu. Mine included tofu, carrots, squash, portabella mushrooms, red and green onion, and bok choy. It is served with a small plate of bean sprouts, mint and parsley leaves, jalapeno slices and a slice of lime. Tear the mint and parsley to release the flavor and put it along with the sprouts and lime juice into your soup. Depending on how spicy you like your soup, add the jalapenos too. Phở should be eaten with a soup spoon in your left hand for the broth and chop sticks in your right for the noodles and vegetables but the folks at Café TH also provide a fork for those who hesitate to try to eat noodles with chop sticks. In my opinion, the quality of phở depends mainly on the quality of the broth. Often with just vegetables the broth is weak and lacks flavor. I don’t know how Chef Minh Nguyen does it but the broth was excellent, savory and flavorful. There was the right balance in the vegetables with just the right amount of each. The tofu was slightly chewy and had absorbed the flavor of the broth. The portions are generous and I had only ordered the small size. Café TH is definitely on my list of places to go back to because they offer delicious food in a relaxing environment at a very reasonable price. More than just relieving pain, Network Spinal Care enhances life force, energy and peak performance, naturally! Dr. Jackie and the staff at Innate Chiropractic’s purpose here is to help you be all that you can be! Here’s what a few people have to say about Dr. Jackie and Innate Chiropractic: With gentle, confident touch, Dr Jackie gets your body parts communicating more effectively with each other. As soon as you lay on the table you start feeling more centered & your awareness expands. These aren’t your typical adjustments - you get longer lasting results rather than an abrupt short-lived fix. – Mary R. Yelp! I have been to a bunch of chiropractors throughout the years. Dr Jackie and the Innate staff are unlike anything I have ever experienced. The typical chiropractor does the “snap crackle and pop” type treatment. Network Chiropractic with Dr. Jackie works on the CORE CAUSE of the misalignment in my body and through the lightest touch she has worked magic on my spine. Not only is my spine feeling better but the overall sense of wellbeing, energy and positive outlook I have is just amazing! I also attend life changing training sessions offered by Tina Marie, an incredible life coach. Together they are positively impacting every aspect of my life. If 10 stars were an option they’d get all 10! – Beth M. Google If you are looking for extraordinary you are in the right place! This has helped to improve my energy levels, health and a renewed sense of wholeness and wellbeing. I used to live my life in constant pain from physical and emotional stress. The question I ask myself now is “Since I don’t have pain anymore what do I have”. My answer is “Presence and Joy”. I would highly recommend getting evaluated! – Michael M. The Canadian Paper Tariff by Mike Hart

eginning with the August issue we are facing up to a 30% increase in our cost of printing because of the recently enacted tariff on Canadian newsprint. For over 20 years most of newsprint used in the United States has come from Canada. This

is because manufacture of newsprint is not as lucrative as other types of paper and the demand for newsprint has been steadily declining. Most US plants that made newsprint have either closed or switched to another more profitable type of paper. The

It will benefit them in the short term because they will be able to charge more but long term as publishers reduce the size and number of their publications and some close entirely, the demand for newsprint will decline even further. Our printer has been absorbing the increase since March hoping that it would be temporary but as they are no longer able to do so, they will be passing the increase on to us. How this affects Natural Awakenings Houston is that we will be forced to do a number of things we really don’t want to do: reduce the size of our magazine eliminating a few of the locally written columns you have come to enjoy, reduce the number of copies distributed and the number of locations where you can find our magazine. This also puts on hold several projects to expand and improve the magazine.

So, how can you help?

Call and write to Senators Cruz and Cornyn and thank them for their opposition to the Canadian Paper Tariff. Ask them to support and vote for S.2835 which will remove the tariff pending further study. Call and write your US Representative and ask him/ her to oppose the Canadian Paper Tariff and to support and vote for HR.6031 which will do the same thing as S.2835. ■ Patronize the businesses and organizations that you find in our magazine because they are the people whose dollars make it all possible. And when you do, be sure to mention that you saw them in Natural Awakenings. ■ Subscribe to our digital edition by texting NAHTX to 66866. It’s free and you will also get several special discounts and access to the articles that we weren’t able to squeeze into the print magazine. You won’t have to look for a copy of Natural Awakenings because we will email it directly to you. We are committed to be a print magazine for the foreseeable future but subscribing to the digital edition will make it easier for you to get a copy. We survived Harvey. With your help we will weather this as well. We thank you in advance for your support and loyalty.

hat made you want to present this unique exhibition to Houston? As we celebrate our 13th year of programming and 106 presentation, our patrons have requested us to bring other unique types of experiences to Houston. We’ve picked several projects that are interesting, still has an educational component as well as entertainment like never before seen in Houston. We presented a different take on our concert with Christopher Cross early this year with having him perform with the Houston Youth Choir. We also presented all 42 members of the Vienna Boys Choir. Sistine Chapel – The Exhibition is an extraordinary blend of art exhibit, spiritual experience and rare educational opportunity. The 37 true size images of all the Michelangelo frescoes at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican create a breathtaking visual with their monumental size displayed inside the historic Corinthian. It’s gothic architecture and enormity of the art creates a once-in-a-lifetime experience for visitors who are coming from around the country. This is a bit different from Brilliant’s traditional programs, is this something you plan to do in the future? Absolutely, we certainly are going to continue to diverse things as

we move along and welcome the public’s suggestions (info@BrilliantLectures. org). We have already scheduled a holiday performance with the Ten Tenors from Australia to be held December 22nd. Tell us about the exhibit? With special expertise and care, the ceiling paintings from the Sistine Chapel have been reproduced using state of the art technology in the Corinthian Houston. For the observer to fully engage and comprehend the artwork, the paintings have been reproduced in their original sizes. The overwhelming impression for the observer will be the dimensions of the art, the closeness to the images, and the modern style of the exhibition. As a result, the visitor can explore the artwork up close at a distance impossible to achieve in the Sistine Chapel. This unique exhibition recreates one of the world’s greatest

Scott Brogan artistic achievements, Michelangelo’s renowned ceiling frescoes from the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel reproduced photographically and artfully displayed in their original sizes. This innovative interpretation of the timeless masterpieces can be viewed up close, including the Creation of Adam and The Last Judgment. How long will it be in Houston, price, hours etc. The Exhibit will be available for viewing through July 31st Monday – Saturday 10am – 8pm and Sunday Noon – 7pm. What’s next for Brilliant? We are truly honored to present another Houston premiere with our Conversation with Kirstin Chenoweth September 14th and Holiday Performance with the Ten Tenors December 22nd. For tickets and additional information, visit BrilliantEntertainment.com and be sure to register your email address so you are the first to learn of next exciting programs – announcements and special pre-sale opportunities are shared with your Patrons registered with us online. migraines, weight gain and skin irritation. In 2015, she eliminated flour and sugar from her diet, and then added more organic leafy green vegetables, coconut oil and wild-caught salmon. Her symptoms went away one at a time, and by last January, she had also lost 100 pounds. The solution for her was to create flavorful dishes that she enjoyed eating, so she did not feel deprived. Weil advises, “The best foods are those that offer disease-preventive benefits such as anti-inflammatory effects and delectable flavor. When I eat such foods, I feel as though I’ve hit a grand slam homerun—the sensory pleasure is heightened by the fact that each bite contributes to my overall well-being.” His take on an Anti-Inflammatory Food Pyramid at Tinyurl. com/Andrew-Weil-Food-Pyramid offers a broad sample of these foods in an easy, downloadable graphic.

ny time our bodies sense an “invader”—a microbe, virus, plant pollen or unwelcome chemical—they go into high alert, producing white blood cells to fight it off. Once the danger has been thwarted, normal functioning returns. If we continue to expose ourselves to these threats, then the high-alert process, known as inflammation, becomes chronic. This disturbance of natural equilibrium can lead to cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, depression and pain. It can also mask or worsen autoimmune diseases. Eating foods with natural anti-inflammatory properties can help the body function better.

“Many experimental studies have shown that components of foods or beverages may have anti-inflammatory effects,” says Dr. Frank Hu, also a Ph.D. and professor of nutrition and epidemiology in the department of nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. “A healthy diet is beneficial not only for reducing the risk of chronic diseases, but also for improving mood and overall quality of life.” Hu, Josh Axe, a chiropractor and doctor of natural medicine, in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dr. Andrew Weil, director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, promote anti-inflammatory foods, backed by recent studies, on their websites. “Small, gradual changes are typically more sustainable and easier for the body to adapt to,” writes Axe. “So rather than emptying your pantry and sailing off to the Mediterranean, you can pursue an anti-inflammatory diet one step at a time.” That’s what Andrea Adams Britt did. A professional wedding cake baker from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Britt experienced bewildering symptoms, including digestion issues, depression,

Green leafy vegetables such as Swiss chard contain natural anti-inflammatories such as vitamins K, D and C, says Axe. Beets have a natural antioxidant, betalain, an anti-inflammatory compound that inhibits the activity of enzymes the body uses to trigger inflammation, advises Axe. Sea buckthorn berry juice (known as olivello juice) is one of the most concentrated natural sources of vitamin C, says Weil. Ginger is a potent anti-inflammatory food that also helps reduce intestinal gas and prevent nausea, advises Weil. Green tea is best enjoyed hot with a little squeeze of lemon; it may reduce cholesterol levels, ultimately assisting in lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, per Weil. Virgin coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, according to a study published in Pharmaceutical Biology. Britt eats a total of one-and-a-half tablespoons a day in hot drinks, salads or soups. Tomatoes are an easy-to-use and a tasty anti-inflammatory food, says Axe. He notes, “They are a rich source of lycopene, betacarotene, folate, potassium, vitamin C, flavonoids and vitamin E.” Bok choy has potent anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer effects, as well as a higher concentration of betacarotene and vitamin A, than any other variety of cabbage, according to Weil. Black cod, also known as butterfish or sablefish, has even more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon, notes Weil. Walnuts, rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids, help protect against metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes, says Axe.

Be of Service by Sarah Gish

I

spent seven summers at Camp Monterey, my childhood home-away-fromhome in Tennessee. The very wise director, Miss Dollie, told us things like “If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours” and “If you are feeling

sorry for yourself, quick – do something for someone else!” In my own home, our nightly prayer before dinner included “Help us to remember the needs and wants of others.” From an early age, I was taught to get outside of myself. However, when I was struggling with alcoholism while in my 20s, I forgot all of that. While “in my cups,” I thought only of myself and when I would get the next drink or how I screwed something up or what people thought of me. I was very selfcentered! I decided give sobriety a try at the urging of the hospital counselors who oversaw the treatment program my brother was in. It was then that I joined a support group and was given a design for living which included getting out of myself and thinking of others. That way, my brain had no time to focus on my desire to drink. Since them, doing service work has become a way of life. I now sign many of my emails “Let me know how I can be of service” and that completely changes the energy! It feels good to help out and to encourage others to do the same. Being of service is important for me beyond staying www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com

sober: it connects me deeply with others and increases my compassion. I decided to make serving the 7th way to ignite your life – after the 6th way of “Connect with love” -- because I feel it’s important to feel love before you serve. We care and then we give back. And, if we are lucky (though this isn’t necessary), we will receive. It’s a beautiful cycle of love! This article is part of an ongoing series in which I discuss the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” that are at the heart of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project (see more about the project and the “12 Ways” here: www.IgniteYourOwnLife.com). Each month, I will explore one Way and I will also suggest a site in Houston to visit that I love and that connects to the concept. I believe in not only understanding these 12 ways and words in your head and in your soul, but also experiencing them first-hand. For July, my focus is Way #7: “Be of service. (serve)” and to live out this Way, I suggest that you check out www.VolunteerHouston.org. It’s a wonderful website of local opportunities to be of service. And if you are looking for service ideas for Houston teens, check out www.ServeForGood. org, a website created by high school senior Claire Furse. Improve Your Bone Strength with Hatha Yoga by Deborah Douglas

A

re you ready to take responsibility for your total health and well-being? Strong bones are essential for maintaining good health at every stage of a person’s life. Did you know that hatha yoga, because of the weight bearing postures that are done, can help keep our bone density high and our body strong? Osteoporosis has become a global problem. In the past, Osteoporosis was thought to affect only older woman. This is just NOT true. It can affect men and

younger women also. It is a disease where the new bone cell production cannot keep up with the breakdown of old bone cells causing the bones to thin and have low bone mass causing fragility and increased risk of fracture. You might wonder what causes osteoporosis. There are many factors that can contribute to this devastating disease, such as insufficient hormone levels, lack of calcium, little or no weight-bearing exercise, certain medical conditions, and genetic

factors. Some studies show that smoking increases the risk of developing osteoporosis by 50%. Hatha Yoga is one of the best forms of weight-bearing exercise known and can prevent osteoporosis. These weight-bearing postures increase strength and flexibility. They stimulate bone development and build bone strength evenly in both the upper and lower body. They also contribute to healthy hormone levels and calcium balance, which limits bone loss and works on the ovaries, which control estrogen/ progesterone balance for bone remodeling. Hatha Yoga improves strength, balance and coordination, helping to prevent falls, and it increases the supply of oxygen to all cells in the body for repair and regeneration. Hatha Yoga can also help with weight loss and quitting smoking. Today I would like to share with you the first asana in a series of weight-bearing postures for the prevention of osteoporosis: Balancing Table Top or Dandayamana Bharmanasana. This weight-bearing asana, Balancing Table Top aka Bird Dog not only stimulates bone development and builds bone

strength evenly in both the upper and lower body it also strengthens the lower back and abdominal muscles. It warms the body and gently stretches the torso as it brings flexibility to the spine, shoulders, and hips. This pose also helps to improve focus, coordination, and overall physical equilibrium due to the balancing challenge. Although it looks very simple to achieve, it may be practiced at several levels of difficulty. To start, come to all fours with the shoulders directly over the wrists and the hips over the knees. For the begin-

ner, the gaze is kept looking at the mat between the hands during the pose. On an inhale lift one leg and push it straight back, keeping the leg in line with the hip. Square the hips, flex the foot and press the pinky toe towards the floor. On the next inhale lift the opposite arm, shoulder high. The wrist should be straight so that the finger tips do not point up or down. Hold this position for 3 to 5 cycles of breath, then on an exhale, lower the leg first then the arm coming back down to all fours and repeat to the other side.

GOT PAIN? If You Have Tried Several Ways To Heal And Have Had DISAPPOINTING Results, We Can Achieve THE PROGRESS YOU WANT!

For more challenge, lift the leg and the opposite arm at the same time, bringing the leg a bit higher than the hips, the arm above the shoulders and the gaze up looking out over the finger tips. Hold this position for 5 to 9 cycles of breath and lowering the leg and the arm at the same time. Then repeat to the other side. For even more challenge, the legs and arms may be lifted higher giving more of a back bend in the lower back or the leg and arm can be brought out to the side instead of straight back. Give this asana a try today and let me know what you think!! If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Deborah by phone/text at 713-269-5165 or by email at yogamixstudio@gmail.com. Whole Body Cryotherapy at Large by Larissa Steinruck

W

hat is a whole body cryotherapy? Why should I go to such extreme measures and endure seemingly impossible low temperatures (-184F) on my body? Why is it good for me? Those questions are being asked by people when they hear the word cryotherapy. Since whole body cryo treatments are relatively new in the USA the majority of the general population, unless you are a professional athlete, don’t know much about it. It mistakenly believed that plummeting yourself in subzero temperatures to lower your body’s temperature down is beneficial for athletes only, it helps their muscle recovery and enhances athletic performance. But, how will the general population benefit from it? To answer this question, we will go back in history, when the application of cold locally to specific body areas for relieving physical suffering was applied in the traditional medicine of various ancient cultures. According to traditions, medical schools in ancient Greece, Persia and also Rome propagated the use of cold remedies for treating a range of diseases. Around 1650, arthritis patients were already being recommended to treat their affected joints using very cold water. In the 18th and 19th century the analgesic effect of cold was widely employed in surgery. Postoperative edemas and inflammations in the operated area as well as chronic-inflammatory joint diseases were also treated with local cold. In 1980 in Japan, T. Yamauchi introduced whole body cryotherapy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. That was when this procedure was truly

born. The German rheumatologist Prof. Reinhard Fricke, who had an extensive clinical experience in the local cryo treatment of inflammatory-rheumatic diseases, recognized very well the importance of whole body cryotherapy. In 1984 he ensured the commissioning of the first cryotherapy chamber outside of Japan at the clinic for rheumatology. In the meantime, whole body cryotherapy now enjoys a much more widespread use in Europe, in countries like Germany, Austria, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, France, Canada, Ireland, United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Finland, China, Thailand and Dubai. The therapeutic effect of cold treatments, their clinical uses, the application in competitive sports and their uses for

general health improvement have allowed a solid basis to be established for continuing the research started in the 1980s on the mechanism of action of whole body cryotherapy and its clinical relevance. The therapeutic effect of whole body cryotherapy begins when the whole body is exposed to extreme cold temperatures for a short period of time. During the whole body cryotherapy the air temperature in the chamber starts dropping slowly reaching max -184F, insuring that the skin surface temperature is lowered within 3 to 5 min by 40 degrees or lower. Whole body cryotherapy allows your body to access and release valuable naturally occurring biochemicals that are active in relieving pain, reducing inflammation, increasing metabolism, deoxidizing and ridding the body of detrimental toxins. Before you start the treatment, you will be asked to remove your clothes, shoes, and jewelry while leaving your undergarments on. You will be given a pair of socks, gloves, shoes and a towel to wrap yourself in. Once you get into the chamber you will hand the towel to your therapist. The chamber is cooled with nitrogen gas. You will be asked not to inhale nitrogen gas by keeping your chin up and slowly turn to ensure an even cold distribution on your body. The floor of the cryosauna is adjusted so your neck and head are exposed. The extreme cold sends electrical impulses to the central nervous system indicating the body must prepare to survive. This activates the body’s de-

fense mechanism and the blood rushes to vital organs to protect them from extreme cold. Now that the body has transported the blood to the core, the blood begins to be enriched with oxygen, collagen, erythrocytes and other beneficial nutrients during the hyper-production period. Vasodilation begins once you have exited the chamber. During this time, your body is transporting the new nutrient-dense blood into your skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue. And the healing process begins. Benefits of whole body cryotherapy include: inflammation inhibition, chronic pain reduction, faster recovery after surgery or injury, athletic recovery, antiaging, better sleep, stress reduction, mood elevation, weight loss, collagen production, and reduction in anxiety and depression. Cryotherapy improves skin conditions associated with eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. Multiple studies suggest that cold treatments prevent cancer and dementia. People who suffer from migraine headaches have noticed a decline in intensity and recurrence of episodes when doing cryotherapy regularly. It must be noted that whole body cryotherapy is not a cure-all treatment. It should be used as an addition to physical therapy to assist in achieving the therapeutic goal. It is not a substitute for other proven therapies even if, as experience and studies have shown, a reduction in drug consumption can also often be achieved upon its application. Whole body cryotherapy is primarily pain-alleviating and anti-inflammatory. It affects blood circulation and metabolism in the skeletal muscles and has a performance-optimizing effect. Whole body cryotherapy improves general wellbeing as well as general mobility and joint function in up to 60% of the treated cases. Whole Body Cryotherapy is a safe and very well tolerated physical therapeutic procedure with a low interruption rate. Side effects are extremely rare as long as the indications and contraindications are strictly observed.
