letter from publisher
HEALTHY LIVING HEALTHY PLANET
G
reetings! As I write this letter in late May, the weather is great but definitely getting warmer. We have been spending so much time outside at various outdoor yoga and marketing events and taking our pack to the dog park and I hope by the time it really gets hot we will be acclimated. It’s easy living in Houston to complain about the traffic or the crazy drivers and how difficult it can be to get anywhere in Houston but in many ways, ours is a very livable city. I enjoy the bikeways and bike trails especially the beautifully landscaped ones along Buffalo Bayou. As the system is gradually expanded, I hope that one day soon, I can bike safely almost anywhere I want to go in the city. If you want to enjoy biking around Houston but don’t own a bike, you can rent one from any of the many B-Cycle kiosks. The many parks scattered around the city are another feature that makes Houston livable. We enjoy nature walks in The Arboretum and Memorial Park. T.C. Jester is within walking distance when our basenjis need a good run. It has also a major disc golf course, but I have yet to try that popular outdoor sport. Cindy and I are looking forward to taking in a play at Miller Outdoor Theatre in Hermann Park this season. Downtown there is Market Square where Critical Mass assembles on last Fridays of the month and Discovery Green where we enjoyed this year’s Earth Day celebration. Midtown Park is one of Houston’s newest and is the location of the monthly YoUniverSoul Community Yoga events. One last thing that I think makes Houston a livable city is our great ethnic diversity. As a special Mother’s Day treat our daughter-in-law cooked dinner and our son sprang for an Uber ride to and from their house to ours. Our first driver was from Azerbaijan and the second was from the U.S. Virgin Islands so we had a two very interesting conversations. We don’t eat out often but when we do, it is so much fun to try out a different cuisine from a different part of the world. It’s also fun to learn to cook some of those dishes at home and nice that there are ethnic groceries right here in Houston where you can buy the ingredients and spices. So, next time you are stuck in traffic on the West Loop or 45 North, take a few deep breaths. You might as well since you won’t get where you are going quicker by becoming frustrated. Think about some of the good things we have in our city and make plans to enjoy them just as soon as you can. Maybe we will see you around the city this month.
Bright blessings,

words from unity

The Meaning of Grace
affirming naturally
by Rev. Michael Gott - Senior Minister, Unity of Houston ately I’ve been drawn to the idea of “grace.” The word has really evolved in its meaning for me on my spiritual path. As a child in the fundamentalist Christian faith, what it meant for me was the idea that I’m unworthy and can only connect with the Divine if I’m “saved by grace.” In my early twenties, I began my deeper spiritual exploration and put the term behind me, along with other words and concepts that were separating and dualistic. When I first began to study and practice the teachings of oneness and the interconnectedness of all of life, I felt empowered. The same Divine Creative Energy that made and sustains the cosmos is alive in me! Beating my heart. Breathing my breath. Dreaming my dreams. This changed everything. But somewhere in the last few years, I’ve realized that I tend to become too responsible. While I am co-creating my experiencing of reality with God, I’m not creating everything. And I’m not creating alone. I’ve come to understand that Spirit is supporting me and loving me even beyond my conscious mind and intention. Life is gifting us and lifting us all the time. Eric Butterworth, a revered Unity teacher, minister, and author says it this way: “The whole Universe is on your side. Life is forever biased on the side of healing, on the side of overcoming, on the side of success.” Our spiritual work is to align ourselves with this Good and accept it. We are worthy. This, to me, feels like grace.

by Doyle Ward ou have more than 55,000 thoughts each day. Many are the same thoughts over and over again. Every single one is an affirmation; this also includes everything that you say. By reducing your negative thoughts and words and increasing the positive one, you can reshape your life. Expecting a better day helps to create a better day. Summer is the time of the year when we often spend more time outdoors, get more exercise, and perhaps plant and take care of a garden. All of those things can lead to better health. Our bodies, minds, and souls also need play, relaxation, and rest. Find those activities that allow you to forget your day to day responsibilities, make you laugh, and relax. Promise yourself that you will feed your inner child this month and follow through.

Here is the affirmation that I am using: I take time for recreation and relaxation. Let’s all have a playful summer and keep it going all year. The only thing that you are guaranteed in life is this moment. Working with positive affirmations can radically change your mindset. Say them and write them repeatedly with the feeling that they are your truth. You have the power to make great changes in yourself and the world. I know this is true because I have made huge changes in my life by changing my thoughts. Doyle Ward is a successful life coach, workshop leader and lecturer in the field of personal development. Bhojan Vegetarian Indian Cuisine
L
ocated in the corner of the Hillcroft Plaza Shopping Center on Hillcroft Street, Bhojan Restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside. It is a quiet place to get an inexpensive lunch or dinner with both table and booth seating. In addition to the main dining room they also have a large banquet room that is perfect for parties and receptions. They serve Punjabi and Gujarati vegetarian food thali style from a buffet. Gujarati is from a state in western India and thali is food served in small stainless-steel bowls on a large platter. So, it’s perfect for people who don’t like their food to touch. You can also order from the menu and to-go but their buffet is always fresh and it allows me to try many different new foods to learn which I like. The buffet consists of five vegetables, two rice’s, two soups, two farshan, two sweets and several sides. This time, I chose the ondhiya, dal, mutter paneer, pulav and carrot halwa. They have a variety of drinks but I usually just have water, which is served room temperature. This is supposed to be healthier and I think It allows me to enjoy the flavors of the food better. Variety of flavors and contrast is important with thali. The ondhiya was spicy and buttery. The dal was savory and you could really taste the tomato. The paneer was nicely chewy with a slightly sweet sauce. I really like palak paneer and this was my first experience with mutter paneer. It was good but I still like palak better. Pulav is a rice dish, very similar to a pilaf and is much more flavorful than the plain white rice. The carrot halwa was my dessert. The meal is served with hot roti, which is a buttered flat bread. Be sure to get some pani puri from the side buffet. Pani puri are small round puffs that are hollow and fried crisp. You make a small hole in them with your spoon and fill them with a mix of potato and chick peas or chutney. You can also fill them with yogurt if you want something cooling but really you can fill them with anything. They are a common Indian snack food and a fun addition to your meal. Cindy and I will definitely come back to Bhojan since the quality is always dependable and each time the buffet has slightly different dishes. If you visit them be sure to mention that you learned about them in Natural Awakenings magazine. Bhojan Restaurant, 5901 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX 77036. bhojanusa.com. June 2018

“Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition” Makes it way to Houston presented by Brilliant Entertainment
Author Publishes Forward-Thinking Book
A
uthor David Kline has published a new book, Change a Letter, Change Your Life. The book gives readers the opportunity to learn about the law of attraction and how to use it to improve their lives. Encouraging readers to move beyond the phrase, I’ll believe it when I see it, Kline suggests readers take the initiative to formulate a new way of thinking by changing the w in when to a t, so that the resulting updated phrase becomes: I believe, then I see. “What a difference one letter can make,” notes Kline. “It can change everything from a negative and stagnant approach to life, to a positive and forwardthinking stance. But changing that one letter in your belief system may be one of the hardest things you ever have to do. It means giving up your old thought processes and early programming and moving fearlessly ahead into uncharted territory.” The book is available for sale at Amazon. com. Houston BCycle provides visitors and residents with a sustainable, affordable, healthy and fun transportation option
A
s Houston’s official bike share program, Houston BCycle manages 59 bike stations throughout Downtown, Midtown, Montrose, Rice University, East End, and more. Users can check out BCycles and return them to any station within the network– the bikes are intended for replacing short, single-occupant car trips. Since its launch in 2012, Houston BCycle has seen increased usage and system growth in each consecutive year. In 2017, the system set all-time highs in riders (52,332), trips (142,257), and miles traveled (964,589). Additionally, Houston BCycle riders collectively burned more than 38 million calories and offset over 900,000 pounds of carbon emissions. With Houston Galveston Area Council predicting that Houston will add 4.1 million new residents and 3.3 million automotive vehicles to the region by 2045, the desire for more bike and bike share infrastructure should only continue to grow. To that end, Houston BCycle is currently working through grant funding to expand its network to 100 stations and 1,000 bikes. One facet of this ongoing expansion includes 14 stations in the Texas Medical Center. Houston BCycle is honored to participate in the transformation of one of Houston’s preeminent districts into a pedestrian and bike-friendly space. As the recently-updated Houston Bike Plan begins to receive funding, Houston BCycle looks forward to operating its system within an increased grid of safe, high-comfort bike lanes. Houston BCycle bikes themselves are equipped with multiple safety features, including auto-generated front and back lights and fully-reflective sidewall. The system is approaching 1,000,000 total rides with an exemplary safety record–no one has ever had a fatal accident on a Houston BCycle. If you’re interested in joining Houston BCycle, you can sign up for unlimited access to the system at $9 monthly or $99 annually. Simply download the BCycle app (Apple/ Android Store) or visit houston.bcycle.com/join-now and you can sign up to join the revolution. New Healthy Coffee Alternative Success by Health (SBH), a new, re-branded company in the healthy lifestyle industry with its Reishi Mushroom-infused coffee products, now offers two healthy coffee products—Café Noir and Café Latte—in the natural beverage niche market for sales affiliates. They are formulated with the Reishi (Ganoderma) Mushroom, to help eliminate unhealthy caffeine in coffee, and with it, the unpleasant metabolic crashes associated with conventional coffee products. They smooth out the traditional highs, lows, jitters and resulting negative pH levels in the body. SBH is the latest direct marketing company started by Jay Noland, a former professional baseball player well-known in the direct selling industry. His business model eliminates the retail middleman through individual, independent sales affiliates. Each affiliate purchases a packet of Café Noir, the standard black coffee, for 68 cents a cup, and asks others they know and meet, “Do you drink coffee?” It’s an easy way to initiate a dialogue about the latest in healthy coffee. SBH founding members and independent affiliates are Dr. James Marinakis, an internationally recognized alternative medicine practitioner, in Boca Raton, Florida, and Jo Dee Baer, an age-group record-setting triathlete and health coach in Central Florida. To join the SBH team as an affiliate and improve health while increasing wealth, call 800-681-4926 or email 68CentsACup@gmail.com. See ad on page 21.

Lower Overhead Green Energy Reduces Utility Costs
Cincinnati has contracted with the energy company Dynegy to purchase 100 percent renewable energy to operate most of its municipal facilities through at least 2021. The green energy will power police and fire stations, health clinics, recreation centers and most administrative buildings, including city hall. The city’s greenhouse gas emissions will be cut by more than 9 percent and its utility rates by more than $100,000 annually. The deal will bring the city closer to its goal of running on 100 percent renewable energy by 2035.

A new Ukrainian homebuilding startup called Passivdom uses a 3-D printing robot to produce parts for tiny houses. The machine can print the walls, roof and floor of the company’s 380-square-foot model in about eight hours. The windows, doors and self-contained plumbing, sewage and self-electrical systems are then added by a human worker. Solar energy is stored in a battery. Filtered water collects from humidity in the air. Prices start at $64,000 per house (Passivedom). M.A.DI., in Italy, produces prefabricated A-frame houses in five sizes that can be set up anywhere. The basic model is rated an energy class B, but can be upgraded with an option of adding solar panels to make the structures energy-independent. Homes made by Lifehaus blend low-cost, off-grid appeal with holistic living and luxurious details. The Lebanon company is pioneering energy-neutral dwellings made from locally sourced and recycled materials. Green home dwellers will also be able to generate electricity and grow their own food.

Beauty,
Thy Name is Balance by Lin Weiss
“Beauty is truth, truth beauty.” - John Keats
T
here is a pervasive confusion in modern American culture about what is beautiful, authentic and healthy. My maternal grandmother, born at the turn of the 20th century, used to say to me “Pretty is, as pretty does.” As much as the clichés of my mothers’ and grandmother’s eras used to befuddle me, I now hear their voices with great clarity of purpose, and the understanding of a genuinely clever approach to inspire foundations of humility and truth into my formative psyche. Simply put, it is an idiom that means: one’s looks are not an accurate indicator of their kindness or goodness. At the same time my grandmother also valued physical beauty. She was half Cherokee and her nighttime rituals of facial-massage with witch hazel and castor oil proved their efficacy, well into her tenth decade. At 102 years of age her skin was remarkable. I do not recall any fretting over age or disdain for the golden years. Just a joyful discipline of care for the temple she’d been given. She grew her own vegetables; she worked hard in her garden and diligently to maintain beauty as a priority in her home. She revered a ritualistic attention to natural detoxification habits and daily spiritual practices. I believe these customs are directly attributable to her longevity. We are bombarded today by messages about what we should or could be, indicating that we are not enough. The truth is, we already are enough. No one can sell you a miracle cream, sensational supplement, wonder drug or supernatural treatment unless they can convince you of the lack in your life. To be convinced requires a pre-existing belief system that colludes with what is being marketed or sold. Our thoughts create our reality. Beauty comes from within.
It is important to nourish yourself with whole, organic, lifegiving foods and appropriate exercise. Hydration is a well-known compliment to the care and feeding of vibrant skin and emotional and physical balance. It’s no secret that our emotional wellbeing affects the quality of our skin, facial features and vitality. Chronic negativity will cultivate lines on the face regardless of the most sensational treatments. Beauty is an inside job. Joy, laughter and a playful spirit are well-known attributes that coincide with radiant beauty. Gratitude is another conscious practice that raises the quality of thought, energy and resonance within body, mind and soul. Beauty accompanies such conscious thought. Mindfulness practices such as yoga or tai chi, and present-moment awareness through meditation rank high on the list for reducing lines on the face and stilling the mind. Vitality comes from a deep, self-replenishing well of compassion for self and other, and is reflected in one’s countenance, skin and complexion. We hear a lot about “The Law of Attraction” these days. The Law of Attraction is a belief that thinking about something attracts it and causes it to manifest in your life. I have been working with the Universal process of manifesting all my life and have become quite efficient at manifesting parking places! Seriously, all of us have been working with this concept, whether, consciously or unconsciously. Good and extravagant thoughts bring more good and abundance into our lives, just as negativity and lack breed more negativity appearing as more lack. How did you just react to the word extravagant? Is there a negative association? Is that your belief or someone else’s? These habitual belief systems create habitual ways of being, they call for a meticulous self-honesty, and a thorough examination of how we create our own realities through thought, active choice or unconscious response. Do you love whom you see in the mirror?
“Beauty is the purest feeling of the soul. Beauty arises when the soul is satisfied.” - Amit Ray If you struggle with self-love and acceptance, it’s important to first ask whose messages you are trying to live up to. Take inventory of what makes your heart sing and make your happiness a priority. Be your own authority. Take back your power. You are your miracle. Just turning up the corners of your mouth, whether you feel like smiling or not, generates a neuromuscular response that sends happy signals to the brain. Joy and happiness, just like everything else, require dedicated practice for proficiency. This will make you feel radiant! A harbinger of beauty.
“Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love, to work, to play, and to look up at the stars.” - Henry Van Dyke

Salutation to the Sun by Dana Shamas
This is the first in what I hope is a monthly series of articles about some aspect of yoga written by local yoga instructors and yoginis.
H
appy Summer Solstice! June marks the full swing of summer and SUN. Summer solstice is the brightest day of the year - the longest day of the year, the most hours of sunlight. Here in Texas we feel it in full force. In our yoga practice, we look to the outside world - nature, to give us guidance and reflection on our inner world. I love to use this time of year - our outer brightness to remind us of our inner brightness. In modern life, we tend to focus on experiencing the world through external sources or cues - what are others doing, what should the yoga pose look like - literally how light shines on the outside. Yet in many cultures light has long been a symbol of consciousness, and consciousness cannot be seen but rather felt and experienced - allowing your internal cues to guide your experience. (This is the kind of yoga we teach at Bayou Bliss.) In yoga, though there is the physicality and ‘look’ of the pose, as you move and become aware of how your body is moving, our awareness shifts from sight to feeling. Feeling is the predominant practice and teachings of yoga. Feeling your body, feeling your breath, feeling through each sensation that arises. As we journey into our bodies and into feeling we begin to expand our awareness and experience

consciousness. We can actually begin to feel, understand and know our own inner light. Most yoga practices begin with a Surya Namaskara, Sanskrit for ‘salutations to the sun’. Many ancient cultures revered the sun as a primal source of power, after all without it we could not sustain life on earth. This dynamic sequence symbolically honors the outer sun, and the inner sun - our consciousness. Sun Salutations allows practitioners to literally light up their body and being. The physical practice engages all major muscle groups and moves almost every joint in the body, warming up the body, lubricating the joints and getting rid of what is stagnate. Once you are comfortable with the physical movement, linking the breath and the movement builds a bridge to inner consciousness and awareness. So often people experience a sense of lightness physically, mentally, and emotionally - at the end of their practice. This is the aim of yoga, and the sun salutations are intentionally designed to create this connection and lightness, connecting further with your inner light and Truth. So much of the time we spend hunched over a computer, a phone, a steering wheel - shoulders rolled forward, chest looking down. Our own inner light www.NaturalAwakenings-Houston.com
is dimmed by just our posture. This gets translated into your yoga practice with shoulders rolling forward in common pose like Tadanasa/mountain pose and plank, key features in Surya Namaskara. Physically this misalignment can lead to shoulder pain or injury. And so often we try and force things to be better - force those shoulders to pull back or stand up straight. However, when we look at nature, when we look at the sun we are reminded that it simply shines, no force required. In your yoga practice this month, I encourage you to think of your inner brightness shining as bright as the sun. Ground through your feet, lift up through your inner thighs and lower belly, feel the midline of your body and lift through the crown of your head up to the sun. Feel that inner lift in the body, and take a deep breath into the whole body. Notice how the chest brightens and lifts and the shoulders naturally fall down the back. Allow yourself to shine forward front, that place of inner strength and brightness. Another exercise: find the midline of the body, take a deep breath, place one hand on the sternum and one hand on the crown of the head, take a deep breath in. Let/Feel your sternum rise as you length up through the midline of the body. Keep that inner lift as you exhale. Repeat 2 more times. Notice how your body feels. Notice how the wholeness of you feels. Here at Bayou Bliss we offer The OM Practice as one of our main sequences. This is a sequence that is available to all levels of practice from beginners to advanced, for all ages, and all bodies. The practice can be modified to meet your needs as it is intended to support you through all phases of life and designed to help you move with and enjoy your inner light. This practice teaches you how to move with YOUR body without pain, for you to live in more freedom and create a fuller life. Always Connect with Love by Sarah Gish
W
e heal when we truly see each other. This is why support groups work so well – therapeutic ones, 12 Step ones, anything in which we connect heart-to-heart in deep ways. It starts with something as simple as exchanging names. Almost 10 years ago, Dr. Atul Gawande wrote a groundbreaking book, The Checklist Manifesto, which was a guidebook for doctors in the operating room. One of the first things he brought up – something alarmingly simple – really struck me: he said that when everyone in the operating room exchanged names, the percentage of errors reduced dramatically. Knowing who was there kicked off something he called an “activation phenomenon.” When people were connected right at the start, they “activate” and participate. We help each other when we know each other. Just connecting isn’t enough, however. It’s connecting with LOVE that makes a difference. This means that you are connecting with compassion, without judgement. That you are stepping into the other person’s shoes and are stopping to really see them. I connect with love by being curious about the person in front of me. Who are they? What does their name mean? Are they having a good day? What ignites their life?
I also connect with love through my hugs. They’re different: I hug heart-toheart, which means I’ll connect my left side to your left side since much of our heart is on the left. There’s literally a little buzz when we do that, as we connect physically heart to heart! Try it and you’ll see what I mean. Connecting with love isn’t hard once you make the time to slow down and activate. This article is part of an ongoing series in which I discuss the “12 Ways to Ignite Your Life Daily” that are at the heart of my IGNITE YOUR LIFE! art project (see more about the project and the “12 Ways” here: www.IgniteYourOwnLife.com). Each month, I will explore one Way and I will also suggest a site in Houston to visit that I love and that connects to the concept. I
believe in not only understanding these 12 ways and words in your head and in your soul, but also experiencing them first-hand. For June, my focus is Way #6: “Connect with love. (love)” and to live out this Way, I suggest that you do two things. First, please make it a habit to exchange names with everyone who crosses your path. If you have time, ask them how their day is going. Secondly, meet up with a friend for coffee or drinks. As I sat writing this article in Phoenicia, thinking that I should suggest it as a place to hang out, two of my friends (Jonathan Beitler and Elaine Dillard) walked in and we all heart-hugged as we connected with love. Being together makes life that much better! Sarah Gish is an igniter, a connector, an artist, a mother – and much more! to see the miracles in your life

O
ver the years, I have come to appreciate the gift of spiritual freedom granted to us by God. Harold Klemp, the spiritual leader of Eckankar, the Path of Spiritual Freedom, has stated that “spiritual freedom underlies all freedom.” What does it mean to be spiritually free? For the most part, we are taught from an early age that this is our only life. At the end of this life, we either go to some promised afterlife or we simply cease to exist. There are many people, however, who do not see our existence in such simple terms. They consider their lives to be an exquisite tapestry—a symphony of complex rhythms and harmonies supported by a deep undercurrent that connects all things, all beings, all experiences, and all events. When I was a boy growing up in Alaska, I would often spend time in the cold arctic air, gazing up at the seemingly infinite blanket of stars. I marveled at the stunning display—God’s canopy upon which was painted millions of brilliant points of light; the wispy, gentle glow of the Milky Way; and, on certain nights, the effervescent dance of the northern lights. All enticed me to ask the age-old questions,
20
Houston
What am I? Who am I? Why am I? My journey for true answers eventually led me to Eckankar, a body of spiritual teachings different and unique, yet at once familiar. I learned that all religions and spiritual paths are valid and important. The Eckankar teachings stress that God is divine love and that all creation springs from that fountain of love. Simply put, God loves all life equally without favoring one person, one nation, one race, or one way of belief over another. This is not what I had been taught to believe as a child. One of the fundamental Eckankar

The Gift of Spiritual Freedom
teachings is that my true identity is Soul and that I have a mind and physical body that I use for experience. This is contrary to the common belief that “I” am made up of a mind, body, and personality that possess some undefinable thing called a soul. I discovered that, as Soul, I am on a journey of Self-Realization and God-Realization—a journey that transcends lifetimes. As the body and mind wear out, Soul comes back to a new body and mind, continuing its journey, living one lifetime as a woman, another as a man; a lifetime in Asia, another in Europe; a life of privilege and riches, another of despair and poverty. Soul adopts whatever roles it needs to learn more about itself and God. The spiritual freedom that God has granted Soul is the freedom to explore all facets of life, unbound by a single lifetime or a need to fear eternal judgement following this one. However, before the fruits of spiritual freedom can be enjoyed, that freedom must first be realized. Spiritual freedom begins with accepting total selfresponsibility for all our thoughts, words, actions, and emotions. We are the creators of our world, a world where we can neither blame nor credit others for our life situations. Realizing spiritual freedom and accepting total responsibility for our lives requires understanding the spiritual laws of life. These laws are as changeless as are the laws of nature ... like gravity. You cannot challenge a spiritual law in court. Nor can you hide from it. One such law is the Law of Karma, which governs cause and effect (for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, even at the emotional
and mental levels). Karma assures that you reap what you sow. Another law, the Law of Facsimiles, governs the principle that “all effects in life are brought about by the thoughts and pictures in the mind of the individual.” I’ve only scratched the surface. Many more spiritual laws govern how we experience life in ways that benefit us. Understanding those laws and living in harmony with them is paramount to Soul expanding in consciousness and grace. The gift of spiritual freedom given by God to Soul is a gift beyond measure. It is a gift of choice. Soul is given complete freedom to choose how it wishes to live and what it wishes to experience and learn. The spiritual laws of life serve as guideposts to aid Soul in its journey to Self- and GodRealization. Soul becomes the conscious, active participant in the spiritual creation and not simply an unconscious effect of life. For more information about Eckankar, or about a spiritual freedom seminar in August, please see the ad on page 19.

LIVABLE COMMUNITIES WE LOVE Good for People and the Planet by John D. Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist

any people define a livable city as one that is easy to get around in by foot, bike or public transportation. Many also prioritize ready access to fresh, local, organic food via farmers’ markets and community gardens. Others champion affordable housing and cost of living factors, safe neighborhoods with a diversity of people, careful stewardship of clean air and water, and plentiful amenities, including considerable open space and natural settings. Many work to preserve and enhance a sense of place suited to the locale. Partners for Livable Communities, a national nonprofit in Washington, D.C.,
that renews and restores communities, maintains, “Livability is the sum of the factors that add up to a community’s quality of life, including the built and natural environments, economic prosperity, social stability and equity, educational opportunity and cultural, entertainment and recreation possibilities.” The American Association of Retired Persons considers livable communities as age-friendly for young and old alike. Along with economic opportunities, a leading stimulus in moving to urban centers is, “More people are looking for a sociable environment where they can walk out of their door to the shops or transit

Street-Scene Renaissance
In Pittsburgh, revitalization is transforming 10,000 parcels of vacant or abandoned land—some where steel mills formerly operated—into greenspace, bike lanes and other enticing and productive public areas. “Biking and our food scene have exploded,” says Chris Sandvig, director of policy with the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group, which advocates for equitable urban revitalization through their Vacant Property Working Group, helping communities access blighted areas for pennies on the dollar. “We’re now one of the top 10 bicycling commuter cities in the country. People also come here as food tourists due to vibrant local agricultural activity.” “A related ideal is to create compact, human-scale, mixed-use urban centers in the suburbs that are less expensive to construct— and thus remain more affordable—while placing shops, schools, parks, services, workplaces and public transit within walking and biking distance,” Lennard notes. “This ensures a healthy, affordable and high quality of life for all; suburban, as well as urban.” Fast-growing Carmel, Indiana, just north of Indianapolis, is following suit. “After years of watching the suburbs sprawl into subdivisions with large lawns, privacy fences and cul-de-sacs, we created a vibrant central core with apartments, townhomes, condos and new options for smaller homes—all within walking distance or a short bike ride to new places to work, shop and dine,” explains Mayor James Brainard. The design efforts serve people instead of cars. “Carmel has spent the last 20-plus years building more than 900 miles of trails and multi-use pathways, enabling residents
to commute by bicycle to work and enjoy easy access to a growing number of parks and recreational areas,” says Brainard. To facilitate traffic flow, some 100 roundabouts replaced stoplights and four-way stops. “Reducing traffic congestion has improved our air quality, and saved gasoline and lives.” A new, mixed-use downtown Arts and Design District includes a Center for the Performing Arts with a Center Green that hosts a farmers’ market in summer and an outdoor Christkindlmarkt and outdoor skating rink in winter. “The old way of doing things in which cities and towns sat back and let the market dictate how a community should be grown must come to an end,” remarks Brainard, advocating the benefits of local governance.
Smart City Advantages
Key elements of smart cities—sensors, cameras, data analytics and powerful networks that capture and relay vital information— help them become more energy-efficient or quicker to respond to environmental and residential issues. Such products highlighted the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show, in Las Vegas. Reducing traffic can also contribute to safer highways and shorter commutes with decreased greenhouse gas emissions. “Citizens are using apps to monitor issues and alert city managers, improving the livability of their communities,” explains Steve Koenig, senior director of market research with the Consumer Technology Association. In Boston, the app BOS:311 allows residents to instantaneously notify government departments of pollution concerns, like blocked drains and other environmental or community needs, feeding the information directly into the city’s work

order system via their mobile phone. This real-time collaboration results in a cleaner, safer and healthier city. The Envision Charlotte project encompasses interactive kiosks in 64 businesses and government buildings citywide, gathering energy usage data for office buildings to increase energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. So far, energy consumption has dropped 19 percent, saving companies about $26 million. The program has strengthened economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability.
Nature in the City
Some cities have focused on the natural environment for improving local livability while mitigating contributions to climate change. Forested open spaces, wetlands and protected watersheds improve air quality, protect drinking water and buffer intense storms. Such areas also connect more people with nature and engage them in communal and healthy outdoor recreation. Portland, Oregon, boasts more than 10,000 acres of parks, plus an innovative Biketown sharing program that has facilitated 160,000 bike trips since its launch in 2016. The city’s Bike Bill requires all new streets to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians by design. Portland also embraces urban gardens and allows residents to raise chickens, bees, goats or rabbits in their backyards. No one wants to live where pollution runs unchecked or water is unsafe to drink. Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters program works to keep stormwater out of sewers and reduce rainwater runoff through decentralized soil-based and plant-based systems, including pervious pavement, green roofs and rain gardens. Begun in 2011, its goal is to reduce rainwater runoff by 85 percent by 2036. Rainwater has become a valuable community resource. The program is just one of many ways that the City of Brotherly Love is transforming itself into one of the greenest in the United States. Overseen by the city’s Office of Sustainability, Greenworks Philadelphia devises long-term sustainability strategies that encompass eight facets, including clean and efficient energy, carbon-neutrality and zero waste. Preparations are already underway to cope with a hotter, wetter future.
Preserving a Sense of Place
Making communities livable goes beyond infrastructure. Actions usually involve preserving, protecting and enhancing what appeals to residents. Santa Fe, New Mexico, is one example of many where livability priorities are guided by the values of its residents and its sense of place. “From our historic public square and marketplaces to outdoor cafes, farmers’ markets and community festivals; from human-scale architecture and balanced transportation to pedestrian and bicycle networks, this place represents shared values,” says Mayor Javier M. Gonzales. “Santa Fe is also full of public art. The city is designed to be safe, creative and inspiring for young and old, families of all kinds and everyone else that comes to see us.”
Good Life as Kids See It
Ultimately, making cities move livable for children can make them highly livable for all. “Children need the same things from a city that we all need, but their needs are greater than ours,” says Lennard. “The environment a child grows up in shapes their health and their mental and social development for the rest of their lives. Our modern, unwalkable suburban environments are contributing to childhood obesity, which has been widely linked to chronic diseases that in the past were only associated with old age.” She notes, “Children need the exercise of walking or biking to school. They need safe streets so they can become independent and explore their neighborhoods; sidewalks and other outdoor areas where they can play, meet friends and interact with adults in the community; easy access to nature; beauty in their environment; and intriguing architecture, works of art and other places to stimulate their affection and imagination. As they become teenagers, they need access by foot or bike to a wide variety of resources to broaden their horizons. Don’t we all need these things?” John D. Ivanko and Lisa Kivirist, co-authors of ECOpreneuring, operate the Inn Serendipity, wholly powered by renewable energy, in Browntown, WI.

We are not recreating the wheel, we are dusting off the wheel and using it again. We invite you to join us on this journey to community and food wholeness. Known internationally as a very inspiring teacher full of wisdom, clarity, and compassion, Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien easily engages people of all ages, cultures, religions, and backgrounds, and helps them to discover more about who they really are, transform all stress and conflict in daily life, and return to the Awake already within each person. Based on her own personal experience, she reminds readers that our goal is not just to recognize ego but to fully realize the source and nature of it, break the system of ego, and live truly happy and free in any situation. In Awake, ego doesn’t exist; in ego, Awake cannot appear.”You are not the voice in your head, or the emotions, or the stress... You are what can recognize the voice, the emotions, and the stress. You are Awake.” -- Zen Master Thich Dieu Thien. Available on Amazon.com
