GoTo for Pets WE’RE INFECTED! RUN!
David Stone, DVM Bloomingrove Veterinary Hospital
What’s the itchiest thing I know? The itchiest thing in veterinary medicine? SCABIES!! And it’s HERE! In the woods behind our houses...the FOX! So cute with her pups—is she shedding? No…that’s MANGE—scabies! Run! Don’t let your dog play there! Chase the fox away! It’s SCABIES! Highly transmissible! Little 8-legged mites that burrow through and lay eggs in our skin! SOOO ITCHY as they burrow. EAT! Burrow. LAY! Most people get scabies from other people in the manner of an STD…not from their dog…not from the FOX. Those people can give scabies to their dog by scratching themselves then scratching their dog. Thankfully, most dogs get it from the FOX or other infected dogs, not from their owners scratching themselves. Thankfully. SAD FACT: Scabies is not always easy to diagnose.
LOCALLY-OWNED
Skin scrapings are often negative and lots of things can cause itching. Fleas, for example, are much more popular. And what if you don’t notice a fox in your back yard? Scabies may seem unlikely. There is, however, a simple preliminary test for scabies that anyone can perform at home. Take your dog’s ear into your hands—scratch your fingernail back and forth over a small area along the outer edge. If your dog starts violently thumping their back leg, it might be SCABIES! RUN! Call your vet. Call your vet even if they don’t do the thumping thing—it might still be SCABIES! If you’ve got any itchy spots on you, call your doctor—RUN! I don’t think the ear trick works on people—so don’t go by that. But if your let does start thumping, you need to see your doctor.

Purrfect Kitty of the Month My name is Star. I’m a sweet, white female kitty with dark-grey tiger accents and a heartshaped mark on my nose. I’m just about two years old. I’m gentle and a little shy, but I love getting pets from you and I warm up as I get to know you. I was living outside in the Park Ave. neighborhood in Albany when a concerned lady took me to the rescue group. I seemed afraid of people at first, but now I look for affection. I’m looking for a warm and welcoming home to call my own and hope that someone think “that pretty Star kitty will be purrfect for me!” Bring me home and I’ll purr my thanks to you! As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Star is up-to-date on shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. Please contact Maryann for details on Brady, at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all-volunteer rescue organization. We’re always looking for good volunteers. If you’d like to help, call 463-8709. Adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany, NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!
“He is very imprudent, a dog is. He never makes it his business to inquire whether you are in the right or wrong, never bothers as to whether you are going up or down upon life’s ladder, never asks whether you are rich or poor, silly or wise, sinner or saint. You are his pal. That is enough for him.” – Jerome K. Jerome
Pets of the Month PLEASE ADOPT US! Hello, I’m Marissa, a gentle cat of around 10 years old. My coat is very soft and I sure enjoy having it petted. Sitting on your lap will make me purr, too. In spite of the difficulties I’ve been through recently, I am a happy cat. I was abandoned and living the stray life. Can you imagine that at my age? It’s why I’m a little skinny. The other reason is that I have significant dental disease. You’ll need to take me to you vet for help with this when you adopt me. Right now I can only eat canned food. A sweet lady like me needs to be safe in a forever home. Could it be yours? Isis is my name-o! I’m a 3-year-old who likes to relax and snuggle on a daily basis. Lucky for my brothers and me, an animal control officer found us in an abandoned building and saved us. Now I’m waiting for my family to come. I’m a lover and enjoy everyone’s company. I’d love to meet you and brighten your day, so hurry down to see me! The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) of Menands is a non-profit organization that receives no ongoing funding from federal, state or local government or any other animal welfare organization. We rely on your generous donations to support our vital services for the animals. Mohawk Hudson Humane Society 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204 (518) 434-8128 www.mohawkhumane.org

HALLOWEENeSAFETYeFOReKIDS
Everyone loves a good scare on Halloween, but not when it comes to child safety. There are several easy and effective behaviors that parents can share with kids to help reduce their risk of injury.
Top Tips
Children under the age of 12 should not be alone at night without adult supervision. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, they should stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups. Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30-9:30 pm, so be especially alert for kids during those hours.
Keep Costumes Both Creative and Safe
When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls. Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors. Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision. Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
Drive Extra Safely on Halloween
Slow down and be alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways. Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs. Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully. Eliminate distractions inside your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings. Drive slowly, anticipate heavy pedestrian traffic and turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
See more at: safekids.org/tip/halloween-safety-tips
…And Don’t Forget Your Pets Halloween can be a traumatic and even dangerous time for your pets. The ASPCA offers some common-sense tips to help you protect them: Don’t leave pets out in the yard on Halloween: there are many stories of vicious pranksters who have abused pets on this night. Treats are not for pets: chocolate is poisonous to many animals, and tin foil and cellophane candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed. Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned. Don’t dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal. If you do dress them up, make sure the costume isn’t constricting, annoying or unsafe.
Be careful not to obstruct his or her vision; even the sweetest dogs can get snappy when they can’t see what’s going on around them. All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; too many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog. Be careful your cat or dog doesn’t dart out through an open door. While this can be a fun time for people and pets alike, remember that your pets are depending on you to keep them safe from the more dangerous goblins and ghouls that this holiday brings.
