GoTo for Pets
Dazed and Confused
David Stone, DVM Bloomingrove Vete
Every dog needs training. Of course, it’s a sliding scale – some more than others – and what are we trying to achieve, anyway? Well, for the lady whose dog barks every time she tries to talk on the phone, or the guy whose dog won’t stop humping everyone’s leg, or the grandchild who gets snapped at, or the grandpa whose dog won’t stop peeing all over the house, and on and on, for all of us who need some sanity in our lives let’s find it in some manners. Here are a few bad manners I see a lot: jumping up on people – (I like it, but many people and kids get hurt, so it’s strongly discouraged). Dogs shouldn’t be biting or snapping at anybody. No endless barking. No chewing up the house. No submissive urination. No fighting with other dogs. No counter-surfing. No eating everything that falls on the floor. I saw a dog yesterday who ate her owner’s blood pressure pills. They fell out of the bottle and the race was on – mom trying like mad to find them all while Ella enjoyed her five-tablet snack. She never learned “leave it.” She did learn “puke it.” The list of bad manners is nearly endless, and clever dogs lengthen the list daily. Don’t despair, adaptation is our strong suit. Since it’s normal to break and bend the rules, we need to pay attention and close ranks on undesirable behavior quickly and

erinary Hospital consistently. And that’s a lot of effort on our part. If we want our kids to do their homework every night, we have to check in on them. We have to actually check their work. If we want our dogs to learn “wait” or “stay” or “come”, we have to work with them – every single day. And if what you’re doing isn’t working, you’ve got to do something else. Call the office if you need the number of a behavior specialist or if you need to start with a good old-fashioned puppy obedience class. The bottom line is that if we want a sane/rational household, we need family rules and consistent follow through. We need to be more involved, less dazed, and less confused.

PLEASE ADOPT US! How could you not instantly fall in love with this face? Junior is a staff and volunteer favorite who has been with us since the beginning of December. His skin has improved by leaps and bounds because of all the TLC he is receiving while he stays with us. Junior is a 7-year-old super affectionate, well-mannered boy. He is very gentle, loves to be with people and to rest his head in your lap while you dote on him. He is even great in the bathtub, even though we know he doesn’t love baths! If you are looking for a loyal companion who will steal your heart, you must come and meet Junior! Cooper is a sensitive and curious 1 1/2-yearold boy, but he’s a bit shy, so we’ll introduce him. He lost his home because another pet in the household did not get along with him and he’s feeling a little unsettled about that. He loves to be brushed (even on his belly) and he’s looking forward to settling down somewhere peaceful where he can relax and be himself. Cooper is very sleek and with his shiny black fur, extra-pink nose and luminous eyes, he is strikingly handsome. If you’re looking for a friend for life, he would be a great choice.
