Who knew what we love would be so intimately connected to what we hate. I know we all know they are connected, but I saw it more clearly when I watched a veterinarian on television answer the question, “what do you love the most about your job?” and she said,“I love when I know for certain what’s going on, for instance, when I see something in a pet’s stomach, take it to surgery and remove the object and the pet is cured! It makes me feel great!” It’s a common question for a vet to hear. I’ve answered it quite a few times myself. No pat answer – always something different, but along the same lines as the TV vet. Below are some of my loves, which as it follows, are coupled with my hates. I love to see families get new puppies. I hate when families get more pets when they can’t handle the pets they already have. I love when I talk someone into running a test for their pet that turns out to provide the missing piece which explains the whole case. I hate when the test is unhelpful and I feel like I’ve wasted your money and eroded your confidence. I love when I recognize people and remember everything about them. I hate when I see someone I really, really know but just can’t think of their name at the moment. I love when you tell me I’m the best vet you’ve ever met. I hate when you refuse to see my associates on my day off because you think I’m the best vet. I love when you bring your child to the visits. I hate when you let your child run our visits. I love when I understand your pet’s sickness and am able to help. I hate when I just can’t figure out what’s going on and I am not successful. I love the winter when your pet’s skin and ears are looking great. I hate the spring/summer/ fall when you are frustrated and your pet is suffering and our options are few.

A Thanksgiving Tip for Your Dog If you want your dog to feel like he’s a part of the holiday celebration, then consider filling his Kong toy with a few kibbles, treats or even some unseasoned cooked turkey. That way he’ll be occupied while you and your family eat, and he won’t beg at the table.

Playful Pet of the Month PLEASE ADOPT ME! I love when the hospital is busy. I hate when busy tips to moments of feeling overwhelmed. I love when you can pay your bill without a blink or grimace. I hate when I know how much you have and how much you need and how far short you’re going to fall. I love the fact that learning is ongoing and rigorous. I hate that I won’t ever know everything and that I’ll make mistakes from my lack of knowledge. I love educating people. I hate when someone wallows in ignorance and takes no responsibility for their stupidity. I love when medical technology is working smoothly and assisting in the timely understanding and treatment of your pet. I hate that sometimes things don’t work properly and even simple activities are impeded by nonworking technology. Thank you, IT support, for limiting my frustration. I love that I have known many of my patients their whole lives. I hate that some of their lives are coming to an end as the wave of age is overcoming their generation. I love when you tell me that your dog hasn’t eaten in two days and everyone is freaking out that he’s gonna die and I grab a few treats and a can of dog food and he eats every crumb I offer and everyone is able to relax. I hate when he doesn’t eat my offerings and we find out that all your fears were justified. I love talking to my clients, catching up, shaking hands, and giving hugs.

November finds us getting into the Holiday spirit. Thanksgiving is on the way which reminds us of family, friends, turkey, pumpkin and – leftovers. The following recipes are sure to warm your family, and one even uses Thanksgiving leftovers to create a kids’ favorite.

Pumpkin and Shrimp Bisque 2 tblsp olive oil 1 lb shrimp (peeled, deveined, and roughly chopped, shells reserved) 1/2 cup dry white wine 4 cups shrimp stock (or chicken stock or dashi) 1 pinch saffron 1 tblsp lemon juice 2 sprigs sage 1 onion (coarsely chopped) salt and pepper to taste puree pumpkin cups 2 1 carrot (coarsely chopped) 1 tblsp olive oil cream heavy cup 1/2 chopped) 2 stalks celery (coarsely 1 batch sage gremolata (see below) pepper cayenne pinch 1 2 bay leaves 1. Heat the oil in a pan at medium-high heat. brown, about 3-4 minutes. 2. Add the shrimp shells and cook until they turn pink and then just start to turn 3. Add the white wine and simmer until it has evaporated, about 4-6 minutes. reduce the heat and simmer, 4. Add the broth, saffron, onion, carrot, celery, bay leaves, and sage, bring to a boil, covered for 30 minutes. 5. Strain the solids from the stock and return the stock to the sauce pan. 6. Mix in pumpkin puree, heavy cream and cayenne. Simmer on low 10 minutes. 7. Add the lemon juice and season with salt and pepper. 8. Heat the oil in a pan. 9. Add the shrimp and saute at medium heat until cooked, about 2-3 minutes. with the sage gremolata. 10. Divide the shrimp between 4 bowls, pour the bisque over them and garnish Sage Gremolata (makes 1/4 cup) 1/2 lemon (zest only) 1/4 cup sage (chopped) 1 tablespoon pine nuts (toasted) ) (chopped garlic clove 1 garnish. Mix all ingredients together and use for
