GoTo for Pets

Pee, pee

David Stone, DVM Bloomingrove Veterinary Hospital

My father is wrong. Partially wrong. He says that cat urine is the worst smell on earth, but I disagree. I think that OLD cat urine is worse. Like a fine wine, it ages and ripens. The carpet, the couch, the walls. Replace them all. It’s not as though any of the commercially available products will make them actually smell new again. One of the most common reasons cats spray in the house is because they’re stressed. In my case, by “other” cats roaming around outside. I can predict, with some accuracy, when my male cat will violate our “agreement” – when the neighbor cat comes calling. My cat is indoors and shall remain so – much to his dismay – but when Sparky comes to flaunt his magical ability to roam the earth freely, Squash has to retaliate. He feels some primal need to let Sparky know that this is his house and there will be no doubt about this fact – emphasized by a nice urine marking. Now I’m mad. Mostly at myself. I know that if I keep the lower half of the windows covered, Squash will never see Sparky and he will not pee everywhere. I also know that when guests come over my wife does not like the lower shades drawn and then I forget to relower them... then he sees Sparky and pees. My fault, I guess. Strange that his behavior is so predictable. It took about nine years to figure out the “Sparky” connection. I deal with inappropriate urination all the time in my office and have only found the window shade trick to work with a handful of patients. Other cats have other triggers and respond to different treatments. A popular and sometimes effective treatment is the “calming collar” which is a lavender/pheromone combo, some cats respond to the pheromone diffuser (like a Glade plug in), while others do well with glucosamine. Traditionally, I’m supposed to tell you to try several of the different types of cat litter – corn/wheat/pine… add a litterbox, covered and uncovered…doesn’t usually work. In fact, no single thing USUALLY works. For some cats, aggressive antianxiety meds may be effective. First things first, before you decide that the cat is just a “bad” cat, have him checked out. Yesterday, a client brought in a cat with an emerging tendency to pee everywhere. We diagnosed a bladder stone. No wonder he was peeing everywhere – his bladder hurt!

LOCALLY-OWNED

Sometimes it’s an infection and sometimes inflammation of the bladder wall. There are meds which may be helpful. I’ve relinquished myself to the fact that I have a great cat who will ruin my life if I don’t take the proper measures. Turn your nightmare around and remember, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. I KNOW EXACTLY HOW FRUSTRATED YOU ARE. Rule out the physical and treat the mental.

“To be without a dog is worse than being without a song.” ~ Henry Beetle Hough

Purrfect Kitty of the Month My name is Brady and I’m a supersoft, approx. 1 year old male in need of a quiet, loving home. I was somehow getting by alone outside, until a nice lady decided to help me. I encouraged her by going up to her patio door every morning and putting my face up to the glass. She couldn’t keep me in her no-pets apartment, so I’m now with the rescue group. I’m a bit of a “fraidy-Brady,” but I’m coming out of my shell. I’m gentle and sweet with potential for a lot more affection if I could find the right person to help me. I like other kitties and would get along with your kitty, too!

LOCALLY-OWNED

As with all Purrfect Companion kitties, Brady is up-to-date on shots, house trained and neutered or spayed. Please contact Maryann for details on Brady, at 331-2221 or at kitties.purrfectcompanions@yahoo.com. Purrfect Companions is a non-profit, all-volunteer rescue organization. We’re always looking for good volunteers. If you’d like to help, call 463-8709. Adoption clinics are held 12:30-4:00 most Saturdays and Sundays at Petco, Northway Mall, Albany, NY. Stop by and see some of our other kitties! We may have one that is just “PURRFECT” for you!

498 N Greenbush Rd. North Greenbush Exit 8 off I90 283-2700 All aspects of veterinary medicine offered in a kind and caring manner for you and your pet(s)

Pets of the Month PLEASE ADOPT US! Neptune is a lowkey, 2-year-old pittie guy looking for a home. He is good with other dogs, but you can tell that his main interest will be in being with you. This great guy is affectionate and easy to be with. Goldie is an adorable 2-yearold orange and white short-haired female cat. She is housetrained and very sweet and waiting for the right home. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS) of Menands is a non-profit organization that receives no ongoing funding from federal, state or local government or any other animal welfare organization.
