EDITOR’S NOTE >

THE HEAT IS ON: Outdoor living, pools, spas, air-conditioning, solar energy and dazzling white. This issue offers the best of the Costa del Sol during the Summer months. Inspiring articles on outdoor living, including how to turn your verandas or roof terraces into amazing outdoor living areas; not to mention useful info on greener living, covering eco-designed furniture, solar power and cutting the cost of air conditioning. Cool, refreshing, vibrant and versatile. White reflects light beautifully giving your home a fresh, clean and airy feel. In this issue we feature some great examples of how to use it in conjunction with furniture to transform your home into a light-filled space. Don't miss our article on a spectacular summer villa located in Sotogrande — "A Vision of White" — a project recently completed by A-cero Studio. The heat is not only on in the outdoor living arena but also in the football arena, the World Cup 2010. Can't make it to South Africa, then check out our article on "Big Screen Thrills" and bring the World Cup to your living room in 3D! Plus, we still have our usual mix of gadgets for the boys — classic cars: British versus American — our best pick. Health and beauty for the girls (including nail sculpture, pretty feet and even tips on banishing the demon cellulite!). Add to that a generous splash of gardens, barbeques and food, and there you

On a final note, we will be changing the publishing schedule of the Home and Lifestyle Magazine: the

magazine will be published seasonally (quarterly) with a increased print run. This decision was made in

Pat Barber — Complimentary weekend break at El Oceano Hotel

line with the seasonal home decor industry and to relieve client’s budgetary pressures. The magazine is picked up fast along the coast and more magazines per issue will be more advantageous to both clients and reader. Our next issue is for the Autumn season — so don’t forget to pick up your copy in September. Relax and enjoy.

Success for Local Property Auction House, International Clients and the Costa del Sol Property Market This year, despite the slow property market, the months of April and May were a resounding success for local property auction house Direct Auctions. In April, Mr. Warrick Wincup, Managing Director and Auctioneer of Direct Auctions — Marbella West, sold four villas for a UK client within five weeks of handling and marketing the properties. "Previously, the client had collectively had the four properties on the market for over three years with eight different real estate agents, and no offers." stated Warrick. "By engaging Direct Auctions to sell the property, they only had to reduce their overall asking price on the portfolio by just 11%. This was done through our successful marketing strategy and pricing." In May, 2010, Warrick also sold and completed on over 15 million euros worth of property, including five luxury highvalue villas, and at their most recent live auction on 20th May, from 17 properties in the catalogue, 13 sold. "This proves that there are buyers, locally and internationally, with the money and finance to buy luxury real estate on the coast," quotes Warrick. Despite all the media hype on the property market in the Costa del Sol, he has sold over 50 properties between Las Chapas and Sotogrande since September, 2009. “We are confident and creative, always putting our clients first and helping them make better decisions in regards to their property and investments,” says Warrick.

Vergola Evening Cocktail Party Vergola Spain & Gibraltar recently held a fantastic evening cocktail party at their new showhouse in El Rosario. Hosted by Vivia Bremer-Goldie, Managing Director of Vergola Spain, and Ross Hinshelwood, Sales Director of Vergola, guests were treated to a demonstration of the recently installed Vergola Automatic Roof System and their new showhouse in El Rosario. In addition to dazzling array of tapas and drinks, guests were also treated to live music. Vergola are the makers of the innovative, rainproof automatic roof system that maximises outdoor living. www.vergola.es

The need for places at British and international schools in Marbella is on the increase. For this reason we will see a new school opening for the 2010-2011 school year — The British School of Marbella, with the refurbishment of its wonderful building (located near the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos of Marbella) soon to be completed. The school, which will commence for children aged 2-6 years, follows the English National Curriculum and is certified and validated with the Spanish educational system. The British School of Marbella will incorporate an additional year group, year upon year, until it covers all ages up to 18 (Advanced Level – Years 12 and 13). The benefits of the new school include: the quality of the teaching staff and a more individualised approach to teaching; the quality of the premises; the use of the latest technological teaching aids, as well as a prime location in the centre of Marbella. The British School of Marbella is part of The British Schools Group, whose international network includes schools in Russia, China and other parts of Asia. The British Schools Group will also be opening a school this year in Pamplona, becoming the international and private school in this autonomous region of Spain. Top Garden’s furniture is designed to be manufactured with a combination of U.S. raw materials in different colours, textures and shapes, becoming one of the highest value furniture lines in the market. CRAFTMANSHIP — DELTROPICO is the perfect harmony of technology and artistic craftsmanship. The fumiture is handwoven by experienced artisans who have developed intricate weaving techniques to attach the vinyl wicker to the frame without using staples or glue, thus leaving no visible loose ends. WEATHERCRAFT — seat decks are made from flexible vinyl straps that are doublewrapped at the tube for added strength. Our vinyl straps are 1/8 inch thick, among the thickest in the industry. Additionally, an adequate amount of straps are placed on the frame, consistent with higher-quality furniture. This means years of trouble-free use for the end consumer. PVC is easily cleaned with mild soap and water, is recyclable, selfextinguishing, and has very low flammability. WHETHER YOU HAVE A GARDEN, A BALCONY, A VERANDA OR A ROOF TERRACE, MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE BY TURNING IT INTO AN EXTENSION OF YOUR HOME WITH A WELL-PLANNED, BEAUTIFULLY DESIGNED LIVING AREA.

This year, enjoy open-air living to the full with relaxed alfresco meals and evening drinks with friends, as you catch the last rays of the sun. A well-planned living area, which can be used even on bright winter days, will soon become the focus of your garden, so set the scene with luxurious hard surfaces and stylish furniture; add soft lighting, firepits, sun shades or pergolas, and you'll have an outdoor room that you can use all year round. The following gives you the relevant know-how to plan your own space or find a designer to help, choose the right elements for your lifestyle and show you where to shop to complete the project. >>

OUTDOOR LIVING >

PLANNING A SPACE BEFORE YOU START, SET OUT YOUR IDEAS ON PAPER.

CAPE REED

As with any good design, whether it's inside or out, collating all your ideas for what you want to achieve is crucial. Start by deciding what it is you want to use your space for. By amassing magazine cuttings and photographs of gardens you've visited or holiday homes you've fallen in love with, together with pictures of outdoor furniture you covet as well as planting and lighting ideas, you'll soon see a theme emerging. Narrow down your inspiration to key elements — atmosphere, the use of space, furniture, hard surfaces, lighting and any planting ideas or water features you want to include — then create a mood board that you can refer to throughout the design process. It's also useful to help convey your ideas to a designer or landscaper, should you commission one, to avoid crossed wires once the project gets underway.

CHOOSING THE IDEAL SITE The next step is to decide where in your garden your outdoor living space will be. If you have a large area, look at where the sun shines in your garden at certain times of day. A terrace that gets sun most of the day might be perfect for alfresco breakfasts and lunches, but don’t overlook the end of the garden that basks in those last rays; it could make the ideal spot for evening entertaining. In a small garden, roof terrace or balcony, this decision has already been made for you so it's just a case of assessing what you want to use the space for — gatherings of friends, family lunches, or romantic meals for two? Armed with this information, you can let the design process begin.

THE DESIGN PROCESS Once you’ve decided what you want and where, turn your plans into reality. But will you commission a designer or create it yourself?

USING A DESIGNER

CAPE REED

Employing a professional to help with some or all of the process will give you peace of mind, as they can oversee any landscaping or building works you may need while keeping an eye on the look and the budget. Word of mouth or personal recommendation is a great starting point. It also makes sense to speak to designers to find out their style, their costs — and whether you would get on with them. PROS A designer will have a clear idea of what will or will not work in your garden, and be able to suggest layouts and plants for a unique space. CONS Design costs will need to be added to your budget.

DO-IT-YOURSELF Nothing is more satisfying than seeing a project through, but do some research before picking up any tools. There are many books which set out the theory of designing an outdoor space as well as the know-how. PROS You'll have the satisfaction of sitting in a space you created yourself. CONS It’s time-consuming to oversee or to do it yourself. >>

HARD SURFACES DECKING A great solution for levelling a sloping site without having to do any major groundwork, decking can be used to create a platform with steps and balustrades, or simply a seamless link from the inside to out with a patio at the back of your home. Naturally weather-proof hardwood decking, such as oak or cedar, needs little treatment, but softer woods need protecting and sealing regularly. Choose rough-sawn or textured finishes for a non-slip surface and be aware that natural decking can become slippery when wet. Or try a composite material such as TimberTech, which is a low-maintenance and safe option that looks like wood. If you go for a real wood and want to stain or protect the deck, there's a great selection of waxes, stains and treatments from Cuprinol, some of which are available with spray or roller applicators for quick results.

To keep natural wood decking looking its best for longer, you will need to fix the decking to a frame or raft to keep the planks clear of the ground; you will also need to make sure the site is free-draining, otherwise the timbers will rot. The good news is you can fit a deck over existing patios, but if you're fitting it over a lawn it's worth installing a weed suppressing membrane beneath the deck to stop any unsightly weeds shooting through the cracks once the deck is in place.

PAVING Although this may be the traditional choice for outdoor living spaces, you don't have to be traditional in your choice of design or materials. These can range from rough-hewn granite setts to modem polished sandstone. Or go one step further and choose an inside/outside surface, such as natural slate, and run it from your indoor living space to the patio, combined with a wall of sliding doors for a seamless transition into the garden. Natural stone is the ultimate choice for patios, with the inevitable variations in colour and texture giving a unique look. Alternatively, consider the stone-effect concrete slabs or reconstructed stone for a more affordable option . Before you start fixing paving in place, layout the slabs to see if you’re happy with the size of the patio area and the arrangement of the blocks. This is especially useful when working with different-sized slabs that need to be laid in a random pattern, leaving you free to make any changes before they're fixed. When you come to lay it, you will need to prepare the ground with a good layer of sharp sand; but, for a more stable surface, it’s worth using a cement-based foundation instead.

GRAVEL Gravel adds a Mediterranean feel to your outside space, you can’t beat a gravel garden filled with fragrant plants and herbs. The usual choice is a white-coloured stone, but for something a little different consider pebbles or crushed shells or glass, which will work best in smaller areas or as part of a bigger design. Before you start, it's worth noting that a gravelled area will require some maintenance, as weeds and even self-seeding plants can take hold. Make sure the ground is well compacted. A weed-suppressing membrane underneath the layer of gravel will provide some more protection, but you will have to rake out stray seedlings as and when they appear to keep it looking well maintained. This is quite an easy task, as the roots are unable to get too much of a hold in the loose stones, leaving you with more time to enjoy the garden. Before you order, be sure to ask the supplier how deep you should lay the aggregate, as this will differ depending on type. >>

LIGHTING • ELECTRIC LIGHTING will need to be planned at a very early stage of the design process and installed by a qualified electrician. Light pathways and steps with clever low-voltage LED lights, or look for unusual, sculptural lighting solutions which will become features in their own right.

• SOLAR LIGHTING is a quick and easy way to install light in your garden, as no wiring is required and the lights often come on stakes, ready to plunge into the ground, or can be hung as lanterns from pergolas or overhanging branches, and use solar lights to highlight gloomy comers or uneven paths. • CANDLES, LANTERNS AND FLARES will add a magic to any outdoor

space. Line paths with votives, hang lanterns from trellises and branches and use flairs in flowerbeds for impact at parties. Candles scented with citronella will keep biting insects at bay.

• BRAZIERS AND CHIMINEAS add a real wow-factor to an outdoor space and come in all shapes and sizes. You should be able to find something to suit all budgets. Not only will they provide a focus for a large outdoor space, but the ambient light and warmth from the flames will also be a boon to evening entertaining.

FURNITURE

Make sure furniture is the right size so that it works for entertaining, yet doesn't swamp the space. Also think about whether you want a matching set or a more informal mismatched collection.

• CAST-IRON, ALUMINIUM AND TUBULAR CHROME outdoor furniture ranges from traditional to contemporary shapes and French cafe styles. Metal furniture can be left outside in Summer but should come inside in Winter months: a new coat of metal paint, such as Hammerite, will help to keep it rust-free.

FABRICS FOR USE OUTSIDE

• Cotton is a good choice, as it's soft, dries quickly and comes in many colours and prints. Tightly woven, heavyweight cotton canvases withstand outdoor living better, but colours fade in strong sunlight and cushions have to be brought in when it rains, or at night, and in the Winter. • Acrylic or olefin outdoor cushions feel like canvas, yet don’t fade easily and can be wiped clean. Put away at night. • Look for fabrics treated with a water repellent, or spray cotton with Scotchgard Outdoor Fabric Protector.

• Dedicated team of technical professionals • Full guarantee on workmanship

Health Benefits of Hot Tubs

Automatic Pool Cleaners AN AUTOMATIC POOL CLEANER IS THE BEST POOL TOOL THAT AN OWNER CAN PURCHASE.

Hydrotherapy, or warm water therapy in hot tub spas, consists of three main healing ingredients: heat, buoyancy, and massage. Together they create an experience that is both relaxing and healthy. Hot tub hydrotherapy on a regular basis provides physical health benefits that go much deeper than just relaxation and pleasure. Whether you are experiencing joint or muscle pain, having trouble sleeping, or are just plain stressed out, spending time in hot tub spas can provide therapeutic benefits for just about everyone. • STRESS AND HEADACHES. Warm water massage stimulates the body to release endorphins that reduce stress naturally. A hot tub’s hydrotherapy jets also dilate blood vessels to help prevent headaches. MUSCLES AND JOINTS. The Hydrotherapy use of hot tub spas by athletes has skyrocketed. Your skin and muscles loosen and relax from the increased blood circulation, if muscles are injured a soak in a hot tub increases blood flow to the injured area, bringing nutrients to help repair the damage. ARTHRITIS. According to the Arthritis Foundation "Hydrotherapy is one method of using water to help treat arthritis. The soothing warmth and buoyancy of the water makes it a safe, ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain." MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS, CEREBRAL PALSY AND MORE The muscle relaxing and joint loosening benefits of hot tubs help those with depression, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Tendonitis, Scoliosis and Bursitis.

The pool filter pump will need to be serviced often. Here's a tip for maintaining your pool cleaner's durability. By using the hose clamp, the pool suction hose can be changed into a backwash hose. The pool vacuum piece is equipped with several parts which fit together to make the vacuum system completely functional. The pool vacuum system head is similar to a vacuum cleaner. Some pool cleaners come with a maintenance kit, which includes a pool vacuum (although it's worth noting that some don't). If you are planning to purchase a pool cleaner, you need to carefully establish exactly what products are included in the price. We already know that filters can't be removed from the bottom of the pool, but when we swim we can raise the filter out and the problem will slowly get better. A good quality filter comes with a pressure gauge, which alerts you when it absorbs in excess particles. When you fill a pool, add a purifying chemical to the water to remove the remaining cloudiness in the swimming pool. Follow the manufacturer’s suggestions. Chlorine kills any type of bacteria that may be found in the pool water, which is why it's important and essential. Shock the pool once a week during summer. Chlorine is usually prepared from powder, liquid or tablets (some experts use gaseous chlorine), and can be added anywhere in the water cycle. Pool specialists usually advise adding it after the filtering process by using a chemical feeder.

Manually cleaning the swimming pool is time consuming. No wonder some pool owner find this a boring task, whereas an automatic pool cleaner enables you to spend less time cleaning and more time relaxing in and enjoying your swimming pool. There is wide range of automatic swimming pool cleaners. They're available in different sizes and prices, for above-ground or in-ground swimming pools. Automatic pool cleaners come in three different types: Suction Side automatic pool cleaners, Pressure Side automatic pool cleaners, and Robotic pool cleaners. A Suction Side automatic swimming pool cleaner connects to the pool skimmer, and Pressure Side automatic swimming pool cleaners connect to the return line fitting of the pool. Robotic pool cleaners are powered by electricity and work independently from the swimming pool filtration system.

THE DINING ROOM: BLACK AND WHITE On the ground floor, the dining room is designed with space and translucence, further defined by the arrangement of the furniture. The space can be enclosed via a free-moving wall. Both of the extra-long tables are designs by A-Cero, as are the iron and white lacquered chairs upholstered with leatherette. A huge plywood chandelier from Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek crowns the scene. The oil painting is by Cantabrian painter, Ricardo Cavada.

bold and creative proposals; like this spectacular summer villa for a family with three children in Sotogrande. It combines a futuristic aesthetic with the contemporary. A-Cero chose the colour white as the main element in the home's decor to provide clarity and luminosity to the interior areas — typical of the white village of Andalucia. Furthermore, the owners chose white as the main colour because it creates an atmosphere of total relaxation. The home is designed with an incredible use of light — the house changes its character and appearance throughout the day. To facilitate entry and create ventilation, there are lots of windows and entrances of light in a strategic arrangement. That’s why it doesn't need air conditioning in Summer. The facade is almost sculpture-like and the exterior boasts a large 90 square meter salt water swimming pool which is framed with large lacquered iron candleholders. The vast outdoor living area is ideal for summer parties and socialising. >> >>

THE LOUNGE — TWO ENVIRONMENTS IN ONE Two sofas upholstered in cotton (Kvadrat) and cushions by Gaston y Daniela create a cosy sitting area around the fireplace. The centre table of high-gloss lacquered wood with glass interior is, like the sofas, an idea from A-Cero Studio. The table features a ceramic plate from a collection by Manuel Caceres. In the fireplace are two painted wooden stools by Piet Hein Eek. The square oak chair is taken from A-Cero. The TV area features a large picture is from the Halong series by Dionisio Gonzalez. HALL AREA — ART GALLERY The free partition that hides the dining room is decorated with a small collection of pictures of architectural facades by Roland Fischer. A chair painted in distressed blue is a nineteenth-century Swedish antique bought at Pep Boixander. On the right, an iron sculpture that simulates a curious angel climbing a ladder is called 'I Believe I Can Fly' from the collection of sculptor Esperanza d'Ors. The floor of the house is in white marble from Piedraland. A-Cero's originality and appeal lies in the different sizes of the room's features and their placement, which conveys a dynamic space.

THE BEDROOM — OPENS TO THE TERRACE The bed in the master bedroom with beige cotton is an A-cero design. The carpet is white silk and was acquired in Pakistan. A early twentieth century Italian desk sits in the corner of the room. The two leather chairs with footrests are the legendary model 'Lounge Chair and Ottoman' by Charles and Ray Eames for Vitra, and wooden stool is by Monpás. On the terrace are a pair of upholstered chairs by A-cero Studio. THE BATHROOM This room is dramatically decorated with a white polished concrete and built-in sink. The dark gray panel distinguishes the vanity area from the basin area. Viabizzuno is the company that is also responsible for the lighting projects around the house. The icing on the cake is the decorative stool, upholstered in bright colours, by Gaston y Daniela.

The house’s structure has a cubic volume of almost 400 square meters and it is distributed across two floors. The most public spaces are located on the ground floor, including the lounge, dining room, hall, bathroom, kitchen and service area. All rooms have access to the exterior living areas. All the bedrooms — master bedroom, guest room and children bedrooms — are located on the second floor, at the highest level. The furniture, designed by A-Cero studio, includes lacquered modern pieces. White and beige woods have a main role in the furniture and, in some areas, dark wood breaks he predominance of white.

JUNE JULY

The world around us pulsates with vibrant multi-hued patches of garden blossoms, brilliant shades of green, sky and water blues. And white is the perfect antidote, the supreme complement, the non-colour that makes everything around it dazzle. White just makes colour pop so beautifully. In a climate that has recently had such dramatic swings, it's common practice to alter our decor when the thermometer starts to climb. Pastel shades breathe easier, they are airy and promote a feeling of open space. If this is the feeling you crave, then think about adding a white carpet or sofa, or a wall of white sheers. These elements will freshen up the dullest room. Decorating with a palette of whites is an exciting experience because more than any other shade, white changes according to its surroundings and the light in a room. This is because white is highly reflective; you will always have shadows that create their own pattern angled across a floor or cutting across the folds in a blanket or drapery panel. There are hundreds of shades that we read as white. In fact, because it is so easily altered by light and texture, it's very difficult to find two whites that match. But that is the very quality that makes it so compelling. When you are planning your room, consider the different effects produced by the juxtaposition of a creamy, plush shag carpet laid out over a smooth, glossy painted white floor. A tactile cashmere blanket softens the hard appearance of a white leather sofa. With white, it's all about contrast. Painting a room white has been the safe choice for years. Thought to be neutral and inoffensive, builders and nervous decorators inevitably go for plain, white walls. However, the truth is that the wrong white can be very harsh. When choosing white paint (and the hundreds of choices can be frightening), look for the white shades that sit at the palest end of the yellow or orange spectrum for a cozy mood. The blue whites are again popular for a futuristic effect that looks amazing with today's coloured lighting. There are many ways to play with white. Reflective on its own, white paint with a glossy sheen is even more so. You can produce a sophisticated pattern of stripes or blocks by contrasting sheens on the wall. Tape off a pattern over a matte white base coat and fill in with high gloss paint or varnish. The shadow effect is captivating as the colours appear to change with the movement of light in the room. Combine high and low sheen fabric panels, mix satin and shag throw cushions, trim antique white wallpaper with creamy white woodwork. The balanced simplicity of this monochromatic scheme is not always easy to achieve, but summer is the best time to experiment. For these months, white is always right.

WHY WHITE WORKS • White is a trick designers use to modernise things. Traditional pieces of furniture and scuffed wooden floors are revitalized by white paint. Their imperfections are transformed into appealing texture. • The backdrop of a white floor and walls makes familiar furniture, window treatments and accessories stand out in a new way. • White can feel traditional when paired with ornate pieces, or utterly modern with streamlined furniture and chrome. • White can also kind of work as a mediator. White will work as a mediator between soft and loud colours. You can use it to work as a bridge between two colours. • A room that’s primarily white is easily redecorated with little expense. Splashes of colour in bedding and throw pillows can be easily changes to create an entirely different look. • Most surprising, white items can be easy to care for. Many white fabrics are chemically treated to be stain-resistant. And white tables can be protected by glass tops. INTERIOR DECORATING IN WHITE • Tints of gray give you a modern, edgy feel that balances even better with stark white accessories or trim. If you’re still not quite grasping the tint options, head to your local paint store and snap up a variety of white paint samples and compare the barely perceptible tint options. • White walls and furniture with bold color on the ceiling, in accessories and in the

The Alhambra Kavana collection (above) is a colourful, fresh and natural carefree coIlection. With a delibrately youthful look, the textile features floral and coloured circle patterns. The collection has chosen strong tones, such as lilac, pistachio green, red, fuchsia (pictured) or blue. If there is a fabric that evokes sophistication and gIamour then it is undoubtedly the Alhambra Secrets collection in satin. With its characteristic delicate shine, A1hambra offers a wide range of new and exquisite colours. This perfectly dyed dyed fabric comes in no fewer than 31 shades to add style to any environment. interiors of bookcases. • For a nautical look, pair white furniture, ceilings and columns with dramatic navy blue walls and splashes of yellow. • For something preppier, try white and navy with a bit of bright green. • If you have a room with large windows, you’ll make the view more of a focal point by doing a very white room. The view becomes your art. • White decor contrasts well with textured stone or concrete floors and looks glamorous paired with lots of green plants. • Find wallpaper that’s tone-on-tone, or white but embossed with texture. • White Dinnerware. Often ignored or forgotten, dinnerware can play a big role in your decorating scheme as you often have guests over for coffee, or dessert, or a dinner party. Clean lines and crisp white tableware are always classy and effective and keep the focus where it should be, firmly planted on the fare you are serving. • White Furniture. Be careful here, this isn’t always the best choice for people with children or pets, but if it fits your lifestyle then go out on a limb; nothing says bravery to your guests like a crisp, clean, white couch and (gasp) ottoman. • White Accessories. It’s sort of a catchall, as accessories can be anything, but you can use this to incorporate as much white as you want. From furniture to pillows and blankets to small knickknacks, add as much or as little white as you want. TREADING CAREFULLY • Choose your shades of white carefully. You want it to be livable, not like Liquid Paper. If there’s too much blue in it, it’s just going to be blinding. Some whites are warmer, with a slightly yellow undertone, while others have a cool, bluer tinge. There are also greenish whites, purplish whites and many other varieties. • If you’re using several white elements in one room, a mix of cool and warm whites can clash. And remember that changes in daylight (from golden sunshine to the gray light of a cloudy day) may change the way a particular shade of white appears. • If you’re using glossy white paint, it will draw attention to imperfections in ceilings, walls, floors and furniture. • Matte paints are better for hiding imperfections: Matte is a flat look but washable. • One worry about very white rooms is that they can feel cold or impersonal. Bringing in wood tones in floors, ceilings or furniture is the number one way to warm up a white room. Mix in strokes of colour or even a bit of animal print, rather than doing a room entirely in white.

THRILLS GET KITTED OUT WITH THE LATEST IN LARGE SCREEN TECHNOLOGY AND IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE EXPERIENCE. HERE'S OUR PICK OF THE BEST OF THE BEST. By Chris Duffill

When people think of investing in a bigger screen they often think that projectors or rear-projection TVs are the way to go. But whilst these technologies are improving all the time, they can suffer from a lack of luminance — they're just not bright enough to combat the light pollution from behind closed curtains and blinds on a bright Spanish day. There are always blackout blinds of course, and these are generally a great idea for watching the latest blockbuster, but not everyone wants to recreate the London blitz in their front room just to watch the soaps. If you're seriously loaded with spare cash and can afford a professional home cinema projection room, the home entertainment world is already your oyster — but, by looking to plasma and LCD technologies, the rest of us don't need to break the bank just to get hold of a good, bright, high-definition screen. Many new sets also have standard-definition Freeview built in, so you’ll be able to catch the best of this summer’s sporting action subscription-free, as well as your favourite soaps, dramas and documentaries. However, keep in mind that in

Spain, as of the date of this publication, Freeview HD (the high-definition version of Freeview) may not be available; and it's best to check whether UK models of Freeview HD sets will be able to pick up Spanish Freeview HD. If you're getting your high-def entertainment from a non-Freeview source, such as satellite, then you have nothing to worry about. High-def aside, size really is king in the world of flat-screen televisions, and as long as you stick to 'full HD' (1080i or 1080p) high-definition models and take the time to go and inspect the picture quality in-person, you can't go wrong. If you haven't experienced a movie or sports event on a screen that's larger than 50-inches from the comfort of your own home, you don't know what you're missing. In short, you see more detail — a lot more detail (especially if you're watching a high-definition channel or Blu-ray disc) than you'd ever see on the average 32” TV. Who said 'less is more'? More definitely is more with our selection of widescreen monster-sized goggle-boxes.

This latest Sony Bravia model delivers the next generation in picture excellence with excellent depth, richness and clarity. Not only can you watch TV, movies and games in superb High Definition, but Image Blur Reduction technology gives fastmoving images, such as sports or action movies, a life-like smoothness and sharper detail. Impressive all-round picture quality comes courtesy of yet more Sony techno-wizardry called the 'Bravia Engine Three'. Interestingly, this TV has an integrated Freesat tuner – allowing you to watch free-to-air HD and SD satellite broadcasts without the need for an additional set top box (but you will need a satellite dish, of course). It also has a standard-definition digital terrestrial tuner, and a normal analogue tuner. This set also comes with an integrated digital cable TV tuner. One innovative feature, which may come in very handy in the bright light of a Spanish day, is that this set has a Light Sensor which automatically adjusts screen brightness depending on the ambient light levels in your room, helping to reduce energy consumption. The TV also delivers full digital surround sound from two front speakers. To top it all off, you can even connect this TV to your home computer network and enjoy video, music and photo content from your PC. This model has four HDMI inputs (two on rear, two on side), making it simple to connect to High Definition sources such as Blu-ray players, satellite receivers, or game consoles. Beautifully slim and elegant, the W5810 features a sleek Piano Black finish, and also has a Swivel function to help you find the best position for the screen.

At a whopping 58 inches, this Samsung model can't fail to grab everyone's attention. Its Full HD (1080p) screen delivers dazzlingly rich colour and vivid details; it even corrects picture errors in standard definition content. Apart from being easy on the eye, it's also easy on the environment. Once again, this is a set with an 'Eco Sensor' which measures the intensity of the room’s light and automatically calibrates the brightness of the image on the screen; So, wave goodbye to wasted energy from a bright screen when it isn’t needed. Four HDMI ports allow for digital connections to plenty of AV equipment. It also has an integrated standard-definition digital terrestrial (Freeview) tuner. Amazing picture quality is ensured by Samsung's 'Clear Image Panel' technology which uses a film filter instead of conventional glass to produce images which are ultra-clear and blur-free from almost every angle. With enhanced colour, dynamic contrast and picture-smoothing functions for sharper, clearer motion, this Samsung really does justice to the big-screen concept. As for speaker quality, the Samsung uses Dolby and SRS TheaterSound which envelopes the listener with rich, stunning surround audio. Again, this is a TV which allows you to connect to content stored on your PC via a network connection. It even sports an integrated internet connection to online entertainment. Dubbed 'Internet@TV' by Samsung, this enables the TV to display content from great services such as YouTube and many others. As large TVs go, this is a feature-rich giant.

SONY BRAVIA KDL-60LX903

Screen Size: 60” Technology: LCD (with LED backlighting) Resolution: 1920x1080 – Full HD (1080p) + HD 3D (Available from mid July 2010)

>>

Following the release of 3D movies like 'Avatar' and 'How To Train Your Dragon', you've probably heard all the hype about 3D-TV. Well, this is one of the first models to hit the shelves and, in tandem with a 60-inch monster screen, the addition of (full-HD!) 3D really is the icing on the technological cake. Just put on the advanced Active Shutter glasses supplied with the TV and you’ll be taken into incredibly life-like scenes which literally jump out of the screen. 3D aside, the set delivers sports, movies and games in superb full 1080p high-definition, but with the addition of 'Edge LED' backlighting which allows you to experience enhanced colour intensity, the whitest whites and blackest blacks. This innovative backlight technology also delivers thinner screens and saves energy. The design is sleek and attractive too, its minimalistic look gives your room a unique style and sense of space with an elegant, flush screen surface. As you might expect from a TV in this size and price range, the 60” Sony comes with integrated Wi-Fi, allowing easy connection to content on your home network. It also connects you to various internet channels and other content providers. Four HDMI ports provide connectivity to your audio-visual equipment. Sound is delivered through Sony's 'S-Force Front Surround' – achieving the full effect of digital surround sound through discreet TV speakers. The set boasts integrated digital terrestrial (Freeview) which means there’s no need for a set-top box. Amazingly, alongside 3D, it's also one of the first sets to come with an integrated Freeview-HD tuner (although, it's worth emphasising again that the availability of high-definition free-to-air in countries other than the UK may vary). At an astounding 60 inches, a HD screen like this can't fail to impress, no matter what you choose to watch.

BIG TIPS FOR BIG SCREENS Regardless of which model you take a shine to, it's worth doing two things before you buy: Firstly, find a local retailer and see the model in the showroom – there's no substitute for checking it out in person; Secondly, remember to use your tape-measure, a big screen in a little room can look very overbearing, so choose wisely and avoid putting an elephant in the room. The World Cup is just around the corner, so gather your mates, chill the cerveza and get ready for plenty of adrenaline-fuelled big-screen thrills.

Having contended ourselves and finally got to grips with Plasma and LCD, the past 12 months have been yet another period of change in the Audio video world. The introduction of LED televisions in 2009 have provided us with stunning superslim design, lower running costs and images which are brighter, clearer and more realistic than ever before. And if super slim-line LED wasn’t enough, the very first 3D televisions are now on the shelves offering you the chance to really get involved in the action. The World Cup this month is set to showcase the release of this next revolution in TV with Sony broadcasting up to 25 games with 3D technology. Sky have piloted their 3D channel showing live sports exclusively at the nine or so bars in the UK and a preview of the programmes to be shown when the channel launches in the autumn is available for Sky viewers at home with a Sky+ HD receiver and a 3D Ready TV. Samsung released their 3D TVs last month and LG, Panasonic and Sony won’t be far behind with their own ranges. All of these TVs will be compatible with the Sky 3D channel or a 3D blu-ray player and are also HD ready so when you’re not watching 3D you’ll still be able to enjoy your normal channels in high definition. PRETASOL ENERGIA

Save money with

SOLAR POWER THE INSIDE SCOOP ON

FIGURING OUT HOW MUCH SOLAR PANELS WILL COST, HOW MUCH YOU CAN SAVE, AND WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU INSTALL A SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM FOR YOUR HOME. Photographs courtesy of Pretasol Energia

Have you ever wondered whether a solar energy system is right for your home? There are a lot of good reasons to consider solar power. It’s a great choice for the environment, because with Solar thermal (energy for hot water) panels you can produce energy from a clean, renewable source, and installing solar thermal panels can also save you a lot of money, particularly in Southern Spain with its abundance of sunshine. You can learn all about solar power via Google, but there’s so much information online that it can be a bit overwhelming. To help cut through the info and the tech, we spoke with Greg Van Praagh at Pretasol, a local renewable energy retailer and solar installer based in Estepona, to find out what people should know before they start shopping for solar panels. The main thing to know is that, when you’re looking at cost, you have to think long-term. “Often there is sticker shock. When you’re looking at the numbers you have to think about it as an investment. In the end, the question is, would you rather produce your own energy, or buy it?" explains Greg. There are also other important factors to consider when it comes to the cost of buying solar. If you buy solar panels for your house, the Andalucían government will subsidise this for you. In fact, the Junta de Andalucía gives grants of up to 46% on equipment purchases and these systems significantly reduce your electricity bill. Solar Panels can reduce your monthly outgoings, add value to your property, and up to 25% of the costs of the entire installation can be funded by the Junta de Andalucía. "Pretasol are full RITE accredited —which means they are registered and approved installers in Spain— and Pretasol are able to apply for grants for renewable energy on your behalf. One of the advantages of using Pretasol is that the grant will be discounted directly from your invoice and we will then claim the grant on your behalf, if you are eligible" Greg explains. So how much do Solar thermal systems cost? "On average a 300L system covering a family of 4-6 will cost about 3.200 euros fully installed", but as Greg points out "buying a solar thermal system is like fixing the cost of your electricity; based on the average energy consumption of a family the system will have paid for itself in about 4 years, and you will then have free hot water for 20 years and beyond. On average you will see a reduction in your electricity bill of 35% as soon as the system is operative. The installation of renewable energy increases the value of your home, which can help offset that initial investment and even enables you to recoup cost on the sale of your property." You have to do your homework to get the best deal and be sure you get the best quality; after all, you don’t want just anyone poking holes in your roof. A safe bet is to choose a professional installer. And, to keep things simple, look for a professional installer who will take care of all

the design, permits, installation and rebate/grant paperwork. Pretasol offers all the above including: • Offering a full service to clients with three years of maintenance for free. • Maximising product efficiencies whilst minimising aesthetic impact. • Providing a quick installation service — solar panels take two days to install and can heat pools and water in the home. Greg also says, "It’s very important to understand how your electricity is being billed and what your electric usage is. There are some simple steps you can take to further reduce your energy consumption. Reducing your usage is an important part of reducing the amount of energy you consume and therefore your energy costs and also dramatically reducing your carbon footprint. At Pretasol we are happy to offer a free no obligation energy audit to assess and propose the best solutions for you to reduce your monthly energy bills.” LOW-ENERGY. Modern, low consumption appliances use much less energy than older appliances. For example, current low-power refrigerators use 40% less energy than conventional models in 2001. Modern systems with "Power Management" (energy management) will also reduce energy use by hindering appliances off, or switching them into low power mode after a certain period of time. Many countries identify low-consumption appliances using one labelled "Energy Star". LIGHTING. You can make huge improvements in energy consumption by changing incandescent light bulbs to Light Emitting Diodes (LED). By comparison to incandescent lamps that give the same amount of visible light, LEDs use less energy and generally have a longer rated life, but their purchase price is higher. LED lights are 10 times more energy efficient than standard incandescent light bulbs, and 3 times more efficient than compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s). They produce clear, high-contrast light offering excellent visibility, and they last 50,000 hours before needing replacement – that’s over ten years if left on for 12 hours per day. INSULATION OF WALLS AND GAPS. About a third of all heat lost in a home that is not insulated is lost through the walls. The insulation of the cavity wall is a fantastic way to significantly reduce the amount of energy needed to heat your home and could save about 180 euros a year in costs. If you have solid walls — insulated both externally and internally — you could save up to 550 euros a year on your energy bills. Gaps and the flow of air, can easily be repaired yourself with a tube of sealant that can be bought in most DIY stores. Insulating your floors could also save you about 60 euros a year. In a typical home, 20% of all heat loss is caused by poor ventilation and air currents. If everyone in Spain takes some simple measures involving the use of weather stripping in their homes the savings would be around 220 euros a year! GLAZING. Double glazing halves heat loss through windows. Installing double glazing is recommended for energy savings and can reduce your heating bills. The double glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation.

Neapolitan Sideboard by John Galvin In today’s throwaway society it has never been more important to reuse and recycle materials. The "Neapolitan" range, from Scottish furniture builder John Galvin, does exactly this. By utilising what most furniture manufacturers would consider to be of no use, he has managed to create a variety of products that reuses off-cuts to produce long-lasting pieces of functional art.

The inspiration for the chair is derived from a screaming mouth exposing the Uvula. The Uvula moves down and touches the floor as one sits on the chair. www.projectimportexport.com

“This table is made of either Pine or Mahogany wood, all coming from sustainably harvested forests. Aside from this, the wooden rods that are used as string in this table is made from recycled or unwanted wooden parts of legs and arms of chairs. Coming from a manufacturing firm with strict Quality Control, we have quite a few of these waste parts. I recycled them by processing it through a dowelling machine. It gives it a whole new look and the new texture adds even more character to the piece of wood and the table as a whole.” — Vito Selma

Finnish designer Timo Hoisko created the Farmline chair out of a single metal tube and locally-produced hemp fiber. “I believe in sustainable development, and in the design of our products we should promote nature-conserving renewable materials. I wanted to design an ecological chair using locally-produced hemp fiber — a rare material in the furniture industry that I believe would create new opportunities in furniture design. Hemp fiber is an ecological material, as it is cultivated and processed locally at a nearby farm. This is Photography by Jussi Metsäpelto and Juha Mänty carried in the name itself: ”Farmline”. Hemp fiber can be recycled thanks to its adhesive (PET), enabling us to reuse it for good instead of throwing it away: thus its life cycle does not end in the litter box, as all of its materials can be recycled and then re-introduced in production. www.ko-ho.fi

THE GREEN LIFE >

Stay Cool WAYS TO BEAT THE HIGH COST OF COOLING DOWN THIS SUMMER.

With air conditioners and appliances running throughout the summer, it's easy to burn up energy and raise costs. In fact, the energy used in the average house is responsible for twice as many greenhouse gas emissions than the average car, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). By taking steps now to make your home more environmentally friendly, you'll not only help save natural resources, but you'll save money, too. To help you get started in "greening" your home, the following heating and air conditioning tips could help turn your utility bill down. Have the system checked by a professional to make sure everything is running at peak efficiency.

Save Money with Digital Thermostats Heating and air conditioning systems use the most energy in a home. One way to keep the costs in check is to install a digital thermostat. This simple gizmo can automatically change a home’s temperature while the occupants are away or asleep for optimum energy efficiency. For every degree a thermostat is set back during an eight-hour period (or up during air conditioning season), the energy savings equals up to one percent. Set the thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for the eight hours you’re away or asleep and the savings can reach 15 percent. Digital thermostats are easier to set and calibrate than older models, and you don’t have to leave it to memory to change the thermostat when you leave the house.

Programmable digital thermostats come in three types: 1. A 5+2 has one setting schedule for weekdays and another for weekends. 2. The 5-1-1 model has one setting schedule for Monday through Friday, one for Saturday, and one for Sunday. 3. The flexible 7-day model allows a different daily schedule with up to four different temperature time periods each day. Some more-advanced units run diagnostic programs and can tell homeowners information such as when to change the air filter. There are even units that start heating (or cooling) early so the scheduled temperature is reached at the desired time. A local Air Conditioning company can help in the selection and installation of the best model for your home.

54

JUNE JULY

PRE-SET INDOOR TEMPERATURES. One of the easiest and simplest things you can do is install a programmable thermostat. It will allow you to cut cooling costs up to 6 percent for every degree you raise your thermostat in the summer. Some models allow you to pre-set temperatures for every day of the week to match your family's comings and goings. For summer months, only set it as high as is comfortable. SHUT OUT HIGH ENERGY BILLS. Your exterior door may be contributing to your home's overall energy usage. Newer models often fit and insulate better than older models and replacing your old door often reaps both energy — and money — saving benefits. Check the level of insulation in your exterior and basement walls, ceilings, attic, floors, and crawl spaces. Check for holes or cracks around windows and doors and for open fireplace dampers. Also, look out for unsealed ducts in your attic, basement, and crawl spaces. LIGHTS OUT, COSTS DOWN. Look for ways to use natural light to reduce the time your lights are on, and replace your bulbs with the newer, high-efficient light bulbs and lamps. Increasing your lighting efficiency is one of the fastest ways to decrease your electricity bills. Turn lights off when you leave the room or add in a dimmer to see instant energy savings. Installing an occupancy sensor that automatically turns lights on and off when someone enters and leaves the room will also save energy and money. OTHER SIMPLE SAVERS. Even small acts of green can make a difference. • Change the system’s filter each month to help it work properly. • Relocate the air conditioning unit to the shade. A unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10 percent less electricity than one in the sun. • Install a ceiling fan to save about 4 percent on your energy costs. This helps spread the cooled air through your home. • Keep lamps, televisions, and other heat-producing appliances away from the thermostat. • Close the blinds on the southwestern side of the house during the day. • Turn off your computer and monitor when not in use. • Lowering the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.

Dream Weddings

VENUE

INVITATIONS

The wedding industry is

worth more than 43 billion euros a year, with the average price of nuptial unions at 20,000-22,000 euros.

o t d a o r e h t

From artistic bouquets to personalised

s is l b d e d d e w

Deciding where you want to have your wedding is the most important step because it sets the tone for the entire event. A church says traditional, while a villa garden says casual, and a brewery says fun. So decide what you want to say and pick a place that reflects that quality; the rest, then, gets easier. To keep costs down, choose a place like a friend’s home or garden that you’ve always admired, or the beach.

Start by looking through wedding invitation books at the store. Get inspired by professional designs by Vera Wang, William Arthur and Martha Stewart. Once you’ve got a motif and colours in mind, consult with wedding planner who will guide you through the process of choosing the right card stock, enclosures, ribbons, sashes, envelope liners, and embellishments to make your invitations personal and unique. And carry this theme throughout the event.

FLOWERS Preserve the bouquet. • Wrap the bouquet in tissue. • Store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to leave for the ceremony.

music playlists and invitations, it’s more than possible to

enlist your own talents, as well as those of friends and family, to pull off a memorable and beautiful wedding.

CAKES Try cupcakes instead of a cake. Cupcakes are a lot simpler than tiered cakes, and you can find a beautiful tiered display or cake stands to give the feeling of a wedding cake. Put a small blossom on each cupcake to make it look even more wedding-like. For a cake with tiers, a nice floral cascade down the front of the cake looks dramatic.

MUSIC Everyone has been to a wedding with a cheesy wedding band playing covers. And guess what? That band probably cost a lot of money. So get an iPod, program all your favorite songs into a playlist, hook it into a stereo system and let it go for hours of entertainment. While this idea is fairly fool-proof, still have a designated friend in charge of the system in case anything goes wrong, and to turn down the volume when people are making speeches or to cue special songs when needed. P H O T O G R A PH Y One sure thing you'll find at a wedding is guests, most of them wielding cameras of their own. Look for those truly candid moments from your wedding by placing desposable cameras on the tables and collecting them at the end of the evening. Let your guests know ahead of time that you want them to take a lot of shots throughout the ceremony and reception, and you’ll surely come up with a few winners. Hire a professional photographer to take the formal shots and then leave it up to the guests to snap away during the reception.

LEARN HOW TO BRING THE BEAUTIFUL, STRESS-FREE EVENT OF YOUR DREAMS TO LIFE. Give your event plenty of thought and attention to detail from beginning to end. THE GOAL What is the goal of your event? Be very clear about this and think-think-think about how to maximise the results. Is this a free-for-all cocktail party, a seated event with a defined message, a product launch, or a client Thank You event? Regardless, you should be clear on your invitation if there is a schedule of events and timing. Some guests may not be able to stay for the entire time. Others may wish to come late or leave early. Your guests will appreciate knowing the time obligation of the event. THE BUDGET Be clear on any budget restrictions so that you match up the right venue and menu with the number of guests who are attending. As you come up with that budget number, build in some flexibility, based on the number of guests invited. Should fewer guests

come, will you choose to spend the extra money in your budget? What if more people RSVP than you anticipated? Be prepared for those budget changes. INVITATIONS Don't skimp on invitations. Be clear on the invitation who you are inviting. One person? One person and a guest? Your event space may be specific and only allow so many guests. What will you do when you send an invitation for one guest and that person sends a RSVP for six? Be sure to include a phone number for the event planner or someone who is knowledgeable about the event and can answer those RSVP-related questions. Check addresses and spellings of names and titles. Nothing is more embarrassing than sending an invitation to someone who has been gone for an extended period of time or if your invitation doesn’t arrive because the person or business has moved. WOW THEM IN THE BEGINNING If possible, arrange parking for your guests. At some

venues, you or your guests have to pay for parking. If this is the case, be sure to mention it on the invitation. If you are at a plant or warehouse, have golf carts driven by employees. GREAT FOOD … FOR THE RIGHT TIME OF DAY Great food doesn't have to mean expensive food. For a cocktail party, consider a cheese monger with dessert wines. For a luncheon or dinner, think about a first course of soup and salad or appetizer and salad. Or, for a luncheon, gazpacho and a chilled seafood salad could be a great starter. Be carb-conscious. The last thing you want to do is put your guests to sleep. ROAMING ENTERTAINMENT If you want to entertain your guests, go beyond the band. Consider a carnival-themed event with snake charmers, magicians, fortune tellers and a caricaturist. WOW THEM IN THE END A beautifully wrapped gift thanking your guests for coming is an impressive touch that can be figured into the entire event budget.

Muchachomalo ITS A WAY OF LIFE

MUCHACHOMALO was already an established and popular brand of mens underwear and urban streetwear in Holland when it emerged on to the Spanish scene in 2008. Since then, it has become one of the fastest-growing young brands in Spain, combining the urban and beach culture that the Spanish love so much. MUCHACHOMALO boardshorts and womens beachwear can now be seen up and down the beaches of Spain and the underwear range has become a fixture in many of the top retail outlets around the country. Muchachomalo, spanish for "Bad Boy", is hip, original, sporty and maybe even a bit naughty. All depends on the person wearing them, of course! www.muchachomalo.es/shop

Put your best foot forward this Summer BIO SCULPTURE, THE MUST HAVE NAIL PRODUCT THIS SUMMER Bio Sculpture is a flexible gel that won’t chip or flake no matter how many beaches you walk barefoot through. The gel is applied in liquid form over the natural nails and is then cured under UV light to give a strong, durable finish that won’t chip — no matter what. Best still, Bio Sculpture nails not only look perfect but also have a thin and natural feel too. One of the main differences of Bio Sculpture Gel as opposed to many other nail systems is that the treatment process is actually good for your nails. Meaning that when you wear Bio Sculpture Gel, whether as a colour overlay (permanent colour manicure) or as nail extensions, your own nails are always being taken care of at the same time and because Bio Sculpture Gel cures instantly under UV light there is no smudging across toes as is so often the case with nail varnishes. With over 130 different colors you will be spoilt for choice. Whether you are longing for that bold beach babe look or if you would prefer a more sophisticated finish – there are colours to suit everyone. Bio Sculpture Gel can also be used to create nail art effects and there are even some glittery colour options to add a bit of sparkle to your summer look. Following independent clinical research, Bio Sculpture Gel is the only nail product in the world to be awarded an internationally recognised five-star safety rating from Farmovs-Parexel. What better safety guarantee could you ask for? Let your hands and feet shine this summer. For more information, please visit or call www.biosculpture.es 952 663 602

Animal prints always make a statement and have a tribal, jungle flair that is sexy and fashionable. Step1

Steps to pretty feet

Smooth. The first thing to do is to remove any build-up of dead skin. Hard areas are made of keratin, a natural constituent of skin that is slightly orangey, which is why neglected feet look discoloured. Remove dead skin with a clean pumice stone. Don't use an old one as dead skin will have been pushed into the holes, where bacteria can breed. The trick is to file when the skin is dry, as filing once it's been softened from soaking risks taking too much off.

Step2

Step3

Step5

try to do this when they're wet they soak up water and swell, which can cause flaking at the tip. Dry filing will also give you a smoother edge. Cut with clippers: make sure you work in tiny snips from the outer edges inwards, as cutting straight across will cause the nail to bend, separating the delicate layers. Ideally, the toe nail should be no longer than the toe. This is to prevent nails being pushed down by footwear, which then causes lifting at the nail base. A good tip is to clip them slightly longer than you actually want them that way you can use a nail file to shape and smooth the edges safely afterwards.

Soaking your feet in warm salt water every day is a great habit to get into. It's anti-inflammatory, so helps to soothe away any aches or pains, plus the salt cleans out the pores, which helps to get rid of any lingering odour. Also add a couple of capfuls of sterilising fluid to your footsoak, this will help to bleach away any stains from discoloured nails. Next, dry your feet by wrapping the towel around your thumb and gently rubbing over the cuticle at the base of the nail. The dead skin will have softened, so should just come away. Don't cut or damage the cuticle — it forms a protective seal at the base of the nail plate that stops invaders, such as fungal infections, getting into the root of the nail.

Moisturising is as essential for your feet as it is for the rest of the body, and how dry your skin is dictates what is best to use. If your feet are only mildly dry, use a cream. Find one that contains urea, a natural constituent of skin that draws water from deeper layers to the surface. If your heels are very dry, opt for an oil — plain vitamin E, baby oil or olive oil are great softeners. If the skin is cracked, choose a petroleum-based, waxy formulation instead. Apply twice daily. If you've had athlete's foot, wipe around the inside of your footwear with tea tree oil on a cloth, or spray with a mix of one part Dettal to nine parts water to stop the infection spreading.

they can be quite heavily ridged, which makes them more vulnerable to knocks and pressure from footwear. Buff them to smooth away any ridges — The hard toenail surface needs a three-sided buffer. Start with the roughest side, which is similar to an emery board, to file away any bumps and create a flat surface. Then, move onto the next side that smooths, and finish with the polishing side for a high-shine effect: Even if you plan to paint the nails, a varnish adheres better to a smooth surface, so it's well worth taking the time to achieve a ridge-free finish. Buff along the top edges of the nail, too, as this will help to seal the layers together and prevent flaking.

Give your toenails a quick swipe with nail polish remover to get rid of any traces of cream or oils before painting. Avoid formulations that contain conditioners, hey leave a film on the nail, which causes ‘bubbling’ when you apply the varnish on top. Colour is getting much bolder this year. So if you're wearing pink, paint your nails tangerine, which looks gorgeous against tanned skin. Or, if your dress is green, lilac polish will set it off beautifully. Apply the polish to the centre of the nail first, pushing down towards the base and allowing the brush to fan out to distribute the colour over as much of the nail as possible. Then, finish with a second and third stroke to the sides. The trick is to stop just short of the cuticle, creating an even line of colour about a millimetre away.

Buff Because toenails are made up of so many more layers than fingernails,

CELLULITE! SOME TOP TIPS TO HELP IMPROVE THAT

DREADED ORANGE PEEL IN TIME FOR SUMMER.

Identify your CELLULITE There are four stages of cellulite, and your type will determine how quickly you can improve it by making lifestyle changes and using some of the latest treatments. STAGE

STAGE

STAGE

STAGE

The shape of the fat cells has started to change, and excess fluid is accumulating in the body's tissues. While cellulite isn't immediately obvious, if you squeeze your skin, it looks like orange peel. At this stage, you can improve it within weeks.

Skin feels doughy and cold to the touch. You can actually see the dimpling all the time, and the affected areas can leave a white mark when touched. Expect to see an improvement in around six to eight weeks if you are at this point.

The cellulite is very visible, and has probably spread from your thighs to the knees, stomach and back of arms. Squeezing your skin together causes a dull pain. A long-term treatment programme will help improve it.

This is the most advanced stage of cellulite. Skin feels cold as circulation has slowed, and skin tone is pasty and lumpy. It can also be painful even without being touched, as the collagen has hardened. Hightech treatments help with this kind.

Improve your DIET

If you thought eating less would help rid your thighs of orange peel, think again. Research by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons claims losing weight can actually make your dimples worse by leaving skin saggy. Cellulite is a skin problem, not a fat problem. It doesn't matter how slim you are, as it’s weakened skin that’s responsible for the dimpling effect. This means it’s better to combat cellulite with a skin-strengthening diet of essential fats and antioxidants, rather than dieting.

EAT MORE OF THESE • Beans, seeds, lean meat and fish; • Oily fish, nuts and eggs • Shellfish • Brightly coloured fruit and vegetables

… AND LESS OF THESE • Sugary food. One of the worst cellulite culprits is sugar, which some experts believe is responsible for nearly half of all skin ageing. • Fried food

Learn effective TECHNIQUES

How you apply your cellulite cream is just as important as the ingredients in it. By using professional massage techniques at home, you can encourage lymphatic drainage and help the cream's vital ingredients to penetrate deeper. • PREP YOUR SKIN. Body brush trouble spots to boost circulation, then have a bath to warm the skin. • GET IN THE BEST POSITION. Sit with one leg crossed over the other. Use the opposite hand to work the cream into your skin, then switch. • KNEAD YOUR THIGHS. Warm the cream between your hands, then apply using your palm and fingertips in a kneading motion (as if making bread), being sure to pick up the skin and roll it. Work from below your knee to the top of your thigh. • START PINCHING. Next, use firm pressure between the fingers and thumb to restore circulation to the area. Start with slow movements and get faster to avoid bruising. • THEN POUNDING. Close your hand and pound the fist of your knuckles up and down over the problem area. This sends blood and oxygen to the surface of the skin, plumping it out. • KICK-START THE LYMPH. Now, cup your hands and pat them up and down your thighs to boost the body's lymphatic drainage.

SMOOTH THE AREA. To finish, make large circular movements with the palm of your hand, then use sweeping upward stokes over your calves and thighs.

Honestly ‌ are you your own best friend? Have you ever listened to what the voice in your head really says to you? You know the voice that is there all the time and constantly comments on everything that you say and do. And it has an opinion about your appearance, your behaviour, your performance, your feelings, in fact everything about you. The voice is an inner judge who passes judgement and tells you whether what has just happened was good or bad, whether what you just said was wise or foolish, and about whether what you just did was good enough or totally wrong. How do you speak to yourself? Only you know that but it is interesting to discover that you do it. Next it becomes exciting to notice what you are saying to yourself. Unfortunately it is very common that we speak badly to ourselves. And we criticize ourselves in a way that we'd never speak to our friends. I call the sound of this voice in my head my inner coach. For many years I had a sound inside me that had a tendency to sabotage me instead of supporting me. I spoke disparagingly to myself and had too little focus on recognising myself for what I did and what I was. Back then I would say to myself: "What I said was damn stupid", "you cannot find anything", "You should therefore have done much better" and "You should have known." When I stood in front of the mirror, it was unfortunately far too rare that I said something loving to myself. On the contrary, my focus was always on what wasn't good enough. Good enough against the background of the enormous demands and great expectations that I had on myself. My experience of my life and of me as a human being was all too rarely good enough. At that time I did not have a particularly good inner coach. It was just the way I talked to myself. I did not even think about it. Today I have an inner coach who supports me. A voice in my head which speaks nicely to me, loving and caring. It is really nice. I would say that it has made so much difference in my life that I am now able to support myself, focus on what works and what I am good at. And I am glad that I have peace of mind and can say yes to doing new things. I now give myself permission to learn. Now I do not try to be perfect. Life has become so much easier now that I have escaped the excessive demands and have started to support myself in a new way which gives me space. If you already have a good inner coach who, like a good parent, supports you and praises the good in you, your potentials and your resources, then continue with this good pattern. Enjoy that you are your own best friend, because good companionship is what matters in life.

If you've discovered that your inner coach is talking badly to you, be glad that you have discovered it. It is the first step to creating a change in your internal dialogue. Consciousness opens all doors and gives us the ability to choose. Choosing what is good for us. If you choose to talk lovingly to yourself, I promise you that your life will transform into a life with more joy, and your day will be filled with good experiences. And you will experience a good feeling and a peace of mind that will motivate you to get the best out of your day. AVOID GIVING SOCKS ON FATHER'S DAY WITH THIS TOP SELECTION OF DAD-GADGETS

BY CHRIS DUFFILL

Every self-respecting dad has to have a gadget or two up their sleeve these days, and giving something cool on Father's Day is a sure way of putting a smile on the old man's face. Gone are the days of pipe, slippers, a copy of the daily rag and a morning to himself in the potting shed – today's dads are sophisticated gadgeteers, so here's a few suggestions that'll instantly make him the coolest daddy on the block.

Neo Classic LED Watch Who says that retro can't be cool? Dads of a certain age will remember when LEDs were the future, and having a watch packed with LEDs was nothing less than wearing the future on your wrist. This kind of watch was first launched in 1971, but they were considerably bulkier than this latest version. With a long battery life and a level of timekeeping accuracy not seen on the seventies originals, the Neo Classic is a welcome return to no-nonsense styling. The display is hidden behind a dark screen which only illuminates when you need it. Without actually going back in time to get an original, this new version of a classic watch is one of the best examples of retro-cool you can find, plus it's a great reminder of where modern gadget-envy all began. And at around £15, cool doesn't come much more affordable than this. Available from: www.red5.co.uk Price: From £15.00 (UK PRICE, CORRECT AS OF MAY 2010)

Sophisticated, glamorous, gorgeous, and fast, this car is on everybody's short list of the greatest cars of all time. Its flaws are well documented, but there are few automobiles that still command more loyalty or more all-out lust. The E-Type, launched in the heady 1960s, has been called the most beautiful car ever built and it defined a whole generation. Development of the car that was to become the E-Type actually started as a race car program. As the protoypes were built and tested, circumstances and the racing world changed and the project gradually became a road car. A prototype (known as the E2A) were raced on a limited basis. A major milestone achieved was the development of an independent rear suspension, which was to become one of the many high points in the design of the Jaguar E-Type. The Jaguar E-Type was officially introduced to the world in March 1961 in Geneva, Switzerland. The reaction was immediate and enthusiastic. The styling was partly responsible; the sensuous shape still gets rave reviews. The list of mechanical features was, for 1961, stunning: a double overhead cam engine, fully independent rear suspension and four wheel disc brakes (inboard at the rear no less, an exotic touch usually found only on race cars) proved the E-Type to be an advanced automobile. The price (£1,830 for the roadster) made the E-Type an exceptional bargain; which put the E-Type within the reach of uppermiddle-class buyers, for whom an Aston Martin DB4 or a Ferrari 250 would only ever be a daydream. For Great Britain, which had just opened its first modern motorway in 1959, and still had no national speed limits, the E-Type seemed to herald the dawn of an exciting new era. The future of the E-Type as an automotive classic was secured. Its combination of good looks, high performance, and competitive pricing established the marque as an icon of 1960s motoring. A great success for Jaguar, over seventy thousand E-Types were sold during its lifespan.

After two years of watching the Ford Mustang enjoy tremendous success, General Motors finally launched its entry into the pony car segment — the Chevrolet Camaro. Although available with a mediocre six cylinder for volume sales, the Camaro could be equipped with several V8s and a myriad of performance options. Chevrolet stated that the "Camaro" was named after the French word for "comrade," although some linguists argued that it was actually Spanish for a type of shrimp. Not exactly an awe aspiring name for a new pony car. Luckily, the Camaro had the muscle to back up its case. The Camaro was available from the start in hardtop coupe and covertible body styles. The RS package included numerous cosmetic changes including a blacked out grill with hidden headlights, revised parking and tail lights, upgraded interior trim, and RS badging. Of greater interest to enthusiasts was the SS package which included as standard equipment a modified 350 cid V8 (the first 350 engine Chevy ever offered). Camaro popularity soared when a RS/SS Convertible with the 396 paced the 1967 Indianapolis 500 race. In December 1966, Chevrolet then quietly released one of the most famous options codes of all time, option Z-28. Unpublicised and unknown by most of the buying public (and most Chevrolet sales people for that matter) and not mentioned in any sales literature, the only way someone could order the Z-28 package was to order a base Camaro with the Z-28 option, mandatory front disc brakes with power assist, and the Muncie 4-speed transmission. You could not order the SS package, automatic transmission, air conditioning, or the convertible. Specifically designed to compete in the

Club of America Trans Am racing series which placed a 305 cid limit on its entries, the Z-28 was available to the public solely to qualify the car for racing. Advertised horsepower was listed at just 290bhp, which was not very impressive until one hooked it up to a dyno and got actual readings of 360-400 bhp. The Z-28 also came with a competition suspension, broad racing stripes on the hood and trunklid and could be combined with the RS option package. There was no Z-28 badging at all, lest it attract to much attention. The Z-28 proved to be difficult to launch on the street because its high reving engine was lethargic under 4000rpm and worked best when it was shifted at 7500rpm (!). Once it got going, the Z28 was tough to beat and boosted a 140mph top speed and numerous racing victories. Only 602 Z-28s were sold in 1967, making it a truly desirable collectable.

Summer Gardens

m u l l y h p i h Spat

BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE

Holistic gardeners, authors and broadcasters who have lived and gardened in Spain for 25 years.

SEVEN IMPORTANT ISSUES When considering healthy summer plants there are seven important issues. Ensuring that you purchase healthy plants in the first place. Unhealthy plants include those already affected by bugs, such as geraniums attacked by the geranium moth, plants with burnt leaves from cold spring winds, and forced plants susceptible to insect and fungal attacks. Ensuring that the microclimate of your garden or apartment balcony or terrace is suitable for the plants. We have seen some wonderful spring gardens which are a dust bowl with few surviving plants by the end of the summer. Not co-planting drought-resistant and thirsty plants. The watering required by the thirsty plants can waterlog or attract fungal spores and insects to the drought resistant plants. Not over-watering and feeding plants. Naturally-grown plants tend to be healthier than the forced growth of over-watered and over-fed plants. Planting plants that have natural insect control properties or heath benefits for the family. For instance, planting a lemon or rose scented geranium graveolens plant amongst pots of other varieties of geraniums to deter the geranium moth. Each of our books includes herb-based insect and fungal solutions safe to the family, neighbours, pets and passing beneficial wildlife. Using an ecological snail and slug killer such as Neudorff’s Ferramol Antilimicos to ensure that leaves or entire plants are not disfigured or totally lost. Recognise that snails and slugs can appear on apartment terraces having been brought in via compost in pots or bags, or attached under leaves or on the sides of pots. Purchasing plants that are attractive as well as having human health benefits.

& JULY JUNE

< THE GARDEN MICROCLIMATE ISSUES There are five main groups of summer plants to be considered and used or not used in villa and apartment gardens. These are reflected in the practical and sensible plant lists and descriptions included in Your Garden in Spain and Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style. Plants that love the sun and are not thirsty such as succulents and cacti. Plants that can survive in full sun but are thirsty and therefore need daily or several times a day watering in the summer – the type of plants that wither when scorching winds blow from north Africa. These include begonias and celosias. Plants that do best in semi shade including some of the plants that you used as house plants in northern Europe, such as spathiphyllum and dieffenbachias. Plants that can survive in shady areas provided there is some reflected light, such as aspidistras and tropical ferns. Salt-resistant plants for front-line villas and apartments, such as aeoniums and portulacas. We often pass a villa which has replaced a small lawn with a mass planting of colourful portulacas. The number of plants suitable for your own garden terraces and balconies can be expanded by planting boundary and internal hedges and trees and fitting blinds and awnings. Unfortunately many plants are sold these days growing in composts that dry out quickly. Often these are based on ground-up palm trees. If possible look out for plants in a soil/peat based compost.

1 2 3 4 5

SOME ESPECIALLY HEALTHY PLANTS Many herbs can be used for making tasty and beneficial infusions as alternatives to tea and coffee and chemical insecticides. In ‘Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style’ we list our ten favourites which rangefrom mint (a tasty digestive, morning awakener and hangover cure) to a garlic infusion to control insects. In the last two years more and more expatriates and Spaniards are obtaining the collection of plants available from www.dolcarevolucio.cat, a charity focussed on making plants with significant health benefits available to gardeners who have interest in natural solutions to potential and actual health problems. The plants currently available are as follows:

SUMMER PLANT OF THE MONTH LANTANAS

Stevia

An alternative to saccharin and sugar, beneficial to suffers of diabetes.

Perilla

Used in Japanese Shiso raw fish dishes – useful to prevent food poisoning and combat allergies to pollens.

Kalanchoes

A collection of three largeleaved kalanchoes. Interesting in salads and said to have anticancerous properties.

The website gives more information and a list of regional sources of plants. The plants do well on apartment terraces as well as in gardens. Then, of course, if you grow fruit and vegetables ecologically these will have no risk of chemical contamination and even from small spaces can meet the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. So much can be grown these days in the space of an A4 sheet of paper and one or two square metres. The A to Z of containers included in Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style opens up a wide range of possibilities.

Lantanas are useful plants for all gardens. This family of plants includes: n The tall growing pink flowered and rambling variety. n The popular medium height red and orange flowered ‘La bandera –Spanish flag’ variety. n The less vigorous yellow flowered variety. n The ground cover purple and white flowered varieties. Each flower for long periods and with masses of flowers if pruned hard during each years’ winter cutback – other wise they can become leggy. An important attribute of the plants is that the leaves hold an active mosquito deterrent. We therefore plant them under windows and, if walking in mosquito areas, we rub the leaves (especially of the yellow variety) on our bare skin or add leaves to olive oil for a month and the rub the oil on the skin.

Summer Grilling Nothing says ‘relaxing summer day outside’ like a good barbeque with family and friends. Making the most of summer means spending as much time outdoors as possible, and whether you are having a pool party, dinner party or relaxing picnic, it’s always fun to incorporate a barbeque into your fun summer activity. For best results on charcoal barbeques, light your barbecue well in advance and let the coals burn down to a layer of white ash before cooking. If food is put on too quickly, it will burn. Stick to small cuts that don't take too long to cook, avoiding delicate fillets of fish and meat that could disintegrate in the heat. Lightly brush the metal bars with oil before adding meat; with fish, brush directly onto the skin. Place the meat and leave it to brown; don't move the meat around or it will stick to the barbecue. Keep all food in the fridge up to the last moment and don't mix raw food with cooked; use separate boards for each.

There are so many different barbeques on the market to choose from, so finding the best barbeque for your outdoor grilling needs this summer is important.

The Burger

FLAVOURED OILS

STILL KING OF SUMMER GRILLING

Give barbecued food an extra dimension with flavoured good-quality olive oil. Not only are these oils easy to make, but they also look attractive served in glass jars.

Top five grilling tips for creating gourmet burgers at home.

1

■ Make small amounts and use on the day. ■ For fish, add a zest of lemon and fennel seeds.

START WITH HIGH-QUALITY INGREDIENTS

A burger is only as good as the beef you start with; buy higher-grade beef. Select only the freshest produce from your local market for toppings. Consider sauteing and caramelizing some of the toppings, such as onions, mushrooms and chilies. This can add a distinct nutty sweetness to burgers. Finally, use artisan breads or specialty buns to add another dimension to the burger's flavour profile.

2

ADD ETHNIC FLAVOR

■ Seep dry fresh baby basil leaves in olive oil to add a fragrant twist to chicken. ■ Mix olive oil, lemon juice, and oregano for grilled salmon ■ Serve the oils in jam jars or stoppered bottles for a home-made effect.

Adding ingredients you might not typically use on a burger can create a whole new flavour experience. Consider Italian favorites like Marsala sauce, pesto or caprese. Or try seasonings like Jamaican jerk spice to make the flavour pop.

3

■ Dried chilli added to oil can be drizzled over lamb.

Use with in 2 to 3 days. Store in the refrigerator at all times.

CREATE FLAVOUR HARMONY

Incorporate ingredients that are harmonious and work in unison. You can get creative and mix sweet and salty tastes like bacon and tomato or sweet and spicy like pineapple and spicy jerk sauce. Balancing flavours is the key.

4

LIGHTEN UP

5

ADDING GOURMET FLAIR IS EASY

Altering your toppings can help you achieve a lighter gourmet burger without compromising on taste. Replace mayonnaise with mustard or salsa, which are both flavourful but lower in calories. Use olive oil instead of vegetable oil to saute toppings. Even bacon can be lightened up if you cook it until it's crispy to remove as much fat as possible. You can even wrap your burger in lettuce instead of a bun for another lighter dimension of freshness, flavour and crispiness.

You can make a spicy gourmet burger at home by enhancing store-bought items with fresh ingredients. For example, you can dress up store-bought salsa by adding your own finely chopped tomatoes, red onion, cilantro, serrano peppers and jalapenos. Add a dash of cayenne pepper to your favourite grill seasoning.

RECIPE … Forget about the packaged and frozen variety of burgers. When a burger and all its trimmings have been made from scratch the rewards are huge. SERVES 6 • PREPARATION TIME: 15 MINUTES, PLUS 1 HOUR CHILLING • COOKING TIME: 6-8 MINUTES BURGER 800g Minced beef 1/2 Onion, finely chopped 1/2 Garlic clove, crushed 1 tbsp Flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 Egg yolk 2 tbsp Sunflower oil HORSERADISH & SOUR CREAM SAUCE 100ml Sour cream 1 tbsp Creamed horseradish 1 tbsp Chives, chopped DIJON MUSTARD AIOLI 100ml Aioli 1 tsp Dijon mustard

THE WORKS 6 Sweet pickled dill gherkins 1/2 Avocado, peeled, stoned and diced 1/2 Red onion, sliced into rings Burger baps, halved and toasted Preheat the barbecue. Place all the burger ingredients except the oil in a large bowl, season and mix thoroughly. With wet hands, shape the mixture into 6 evenly sized burgers. Refrigerate for 1 hour. For the horseradish and sour cream sauce, whisk all the ingredients together in a bowl until smooth. Do the same for the Dijon mustard aioli. Brush the burgers with a little oil, place on the preheated barbecue and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, until well browned but still pink in the centre. Serve the burgers in the baps spread with a spoonful of each sauce and garnished with your choice of ‘the works’. CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM

FOR ADOPTION FRANKIE We have called this lovely boy Frankie. He is a 5-year-old black cocker spaniel who was dumped by his family. When he arrived at ACE Charity Kennels in La Cala de Mijas he was bewildered and in such a terrible condition with a thick dirty coat and very sad eyes. After a bath and a haircut he is much happier and he gets on well with other dogs and loves people. He has a good character, is full of energy and enjoys a game of football! When out running free he is obedient and stays quite close all the time. We need to find him a loving permanent home where he will get lots of attention. He walks well on the lead and doesn't pull at all so will make a wonderful companion. If anybody can offer Frankie a good home with plenty of walks then please call: Vivien 639991079 Please check the ACE website www.ace-charity.org

COMMUNITY AND CHARITY NEWS ALONG THE COAST Promoting Positive People on the Costa BY DAVID JEFFERS MAIRS You may recall my mention in the previous edition that it was my intention to leap from an airplane, 12,000 feet up in the air, bolted to a sky diving instructor, in aid of Alzheimers Research. Well, I’ve been and gone and done it. On Sunday the 16th of May I had the most incredible experience of my life when Steve, the jumpmaster, and I stepped out of a perfectly good aircraft into a whole bunch of very fresh air. It was awesome, surreal — am I dreaming this or what? Nope, no dream. You’re actually doing this, you fool. It took me a few seconds to regain my senses and, although it’s difficult to put into words exactly how it feels to do such a seemingly stupid thing, believe me, I’ve never felt so alive and can’t wait to do it again. The jump was filmed and has been uploaded to Youtube. If you go to www. youtube.com and search for “David Mairs jumps for Alzheimers Research” you’ll see the jump. It’s great and I’m delighted that I have a DVD to remind myself of the experience. I must say a big thank you to Maurice Boland of TRE Radio who phoned me at the airfield, in Perth Scotland, just prior to the jump. Our conversation was broadcast live to the Costa del Sol and Maurice had even taken the time to research the location of the nearest hospital for me. Wasn’t that nice of him! We had great fun chatting together and I do hope you enjoyed the broadcast. A week prior to the jump, my wife Linda and I (well, mainly Linda, let the truth be known) organised a fund-raiser at the beautiful Restaurant Mijas Playa and what a great night it was; Due, in no short measure, to a bunch of the best entertainers on the coast who had gladly given their time to support the charity. Many thanks to (in order of appearance): Maurice Boland; Johnny G; 2True and the Gospel Singers; Samantha Mairs; Stephen Lloyd-Morgan; Rebecca Tate, and Gareth Christian. Their enthusiasm and professionalism made it a fantastic nights’ entertainment. I could hardly believe it when I received a call from the promoter of the SMOKIE concert, who were playing at the Sohail Castle Fuengirola the night before our fund-raiser, inviting Linda and I for pre-performance drinks and pics with the band. What a thrill — the boys, who were all keen to support the charity, gave me a goody bag containing T-shirts, CDs, DVDs and autographed photographs of the band to be auctioned on the night. Many thanks SMOKIE and continued success. I would like also to thank the local business community (listed below) for donating the wonderful prizes for the raffle. On the night we raised 2,125 euros and I still have some sponsorship money to pick up which should swell the fund to approx. 3,000 euros. Thanks also to my friend Johno at The Beat Radio, you’re a star.

CONCORDIA

WORLD DAY OF THE AIDS ORPHANS MISSION Age Concern España works to promote the well-being of all older people‚ helping to make life a fulfilling and enjoyable experience for everyone. We aim to secure a positive role in society for the older generation and provide direct services for those in need. There are a significant number of older people living in Spain for whom English is their first or second language. Age Concern España is in a unique position to provide support to these people through its large network of English-speaking volunteers. We are also committed to integration in Spain and are developing stronger links with Spanish organisations. Since Age Concern España was established, the demand for its advice and services has grown. Each Age Concern Organisation has grown locally and has responded to local needs therefore the services offered vary according to location. The services provided at a localised level include befriending, home and hospital visiting, equipment loans, transportation, interpreting services and social activities. We are able to undertake benefit checks, by liaising with the Pensions Benefits and Healthcare team (PBHT), to ensure that people are claiming all that they are entitled to both under their UK welfare entitlements and their Spanish welfare entitlements

HISTORY Age Concern was established in Spain in 1994 and developed from an organisation called O.A.S.I.S.‚ based in the Balearics. Initially known as Age Concern Spain (Baleares) it developed Age Concern Sponsored Walk — Thirty inwith the active support of Age Concern England. trepid walkers strode out on Sunday May 2nd In 1998 this federation became known as Age Concern España and the number of local organisations within it continues to grow.

FUNDING Age Concern España receives grants from the following main funders: • Age Concern England • Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund • SSAFA Forces Help In addition to these grants‚ each local Age Concern raises its own funds and has some flexibility over the activities it undertakes‚ as long as it adheres to Spanish law and Age Concern España’s Statutes. Funds are received from various sources‚ including sales from our charity shops‚ donations from individuals and companies and from dedicated fundraising events. Age Concern España relies on these voluntary donations to fund its vital work. Sarah Rogers, casework manager, says: “Volunteers need ongoing training to ensure they offer a really beneficial service to elderly people. Kind contributions from the public make this possible”. The charity Concordia, chaired by Princess Maria Luisa of Prussia, joined the celebration of World Day of AIDS orphans. The aim of this event is to encourage support for millions of children orphaned by the disease, as well as providing information and counselling on HIV/AIDS. It is estimated that this year AIDS will deprive 20 million children worldwide from the presence of their parents. Faced with this alarming situation, Concordia wants to appeal to the whole society and promote solidarity with these children. To do this the charity held a series of events with small children, aged between 5 and 11 years from the public school Fuente Nueva de San Pedro Alcántara. As is traditional, at 1300 hours, a minute of silence was observed and then one of the children read out a manifesto written by schoolchildren themselves. Then, after listening to “I'll pray for you”, a song composed specifically for this day by Sarah Watson, the children carried bright red balloons to form a giant red ribbon set to theme music of the Cirque du Soleil show Alegria; a song that Concordia uses in all of their events. As a finale to the programme, the children released all their balloons in a symbol of solidarity and hope. Next to the Princess Marie Louise of Prussia attended Carmen Diaz the council delegate for Culture and Education of the City of Marbella. “IF YOU CAN BRING HOPE TO ONE PERSON YOU WILL NOT HAVE LIVED IN VAIN” (Martin Luther King) Is the opening line from “Corazon” a new musical production, which has recently gained international recognition. Dario Poli and David Mairs often talked about spirited people, who generously gave from the heart, using their own time to help charitable works. Inspired by this idea Dario wrote the music to a work called “Corazon” (Heart) which David, after writing some of the lyrics, set about producing in his studio. David and Dario drafted in Samantha Mairs, David’s talented daughter, to sing the part of “The Heart Angel” as they felt the quality of her voice was perfect for the sound they were trying to achieve. The song was used in a photo slide show by Paul Wilcockson and published on www.marbellmarbella.es It reached the ears of Debbi Mace, the President of “Children for Peace” an International charity based in Rome who wrote; “What a lovely surprise!!! We adore the song and would appreciate your permission to use it on our website. It is so beautiful and fully says what we feel.” Debbi and Lamia. Dario and David are happy that the song is now being used (free of any charge, to help the charity) exactly as they had imagined, as it is “dedicated to people who are givers and have heart”. If any other charities would like to use this music please contact costadelsol@hotmail.com — report by Dario Poli. CDSHOMEMAGAZINE.COM
