NOTE
EDITOR’S
Most of us eagerly relish the arrival of spring, especially here on our exuberantly invigorating stretch of southern Mediterranean coastline. Apart from being able to leave the last chilly remnants of winter behind us and bask happily in the sun’s embrace, spring is also the ideal time to take a deep – and honest – look at our evolving priorities within the home.
As Leo Tolstoy wrote in Anna Karenina, “Spring is the time of plans and projects.” In the contemporary context of the Costa del Sol, for many people that will mean revitalising their homes in preparation for summer.
To assist with your endeavours in that respect, the comprehensive design and décor sections in this early-spring issue of Home & Lifestyle showcase both key trend-setting styles for indoor areas and the increasing connectivity of outdoor spaces.
The state-of-the-art kitchen set-ups and congenial dining settings featured here – emboldened by elegant tableware – will, we hope, give you some great ideas for ensuring an appetising welcome when family and friends are invited for lunch or dinner.
Meanwhile, our experts’ recommendations for chic living areas and harmonious lighting will help you create the right mood for welcoming visitors into your home, or simply relaxing alone. Top local showrooms and interior decorators also provide invaluable insight into how you can transform bathrooms into modern spa-like sanctuaries, and bedrooms into intimate havens of serenity.
In addition, we delve into the treasure trove of latest trends for such fundamental complementary furnishings and accessories as rugs, wallpaper, fabrics, heating and mirrors, and – to bring a sense of order to the overall home scheme – cutting-edge storage solutions.
Then there is, arguably, the most important space of all at this time of the year and heading into summer: the outdoors. Another famous quote, by the sadly departed Robin Williams, reminded us, “Spring is nature’s way of saying ‘Let’s Party!’.” To that end, whether you have a cosy apartment terrace, sun shades on your townhouse porch or a lavish pergola in the garden of your villa, your party plans will certainly be enhanced by a spring-time revamp.
Of course, there are also more serious concerns when refurbishing the home. The somewhat erratic weather conditions – especially notable during the past year – have kept environmental sensitivities at the top of the agenda.
Even the seemingly smallest details can make an important contribution. In Fuengirola, for example, the municipality’s water utility company, Gestagua, is distributing free to clients 6,000 mini tap filters that reportedly save 50 per cent of water use by mixing this precious (and, in some areas, disturbingly scarce) resource with air pressure to reduce volume. Many of the bathrooms highlighted in this issue also incorporate revolutionary water-saving features. Nevertheless, saving water is just one key priority in the home, as there are many other measures we can adopt and tools we can use – including more eco-friendly materials such as stone – in response to our and the broader community’s ongoing concerns.
In short, all it requires is a vigorous commitment, combined with a dash of creative finesse, to bring the essence of nature indoors and create home spaces that are aesthetically engrossing, enduringly practical and soundly sustainable.

AL FRESCO ELEGANCE
When entering the realms of outdoor living, the allure of nature intertwines seamlessly with sophisticated comfort and style, transforming outdoor spaces into havens of relaxation and refinement.
At the heart of outdoor living lies furniture that invites us to unwind amidst the beauty of the outdoors. As summer is just around the corner, we delve into the world of sophisticated furniture collections that are crafted to harmonise with nature’s surroundings. From sleek lines to rustic charm, these stunning collections embody elegance while embracing the raw beauty of the environment that surrounds us.
It is no surprise that the use of natural materials has come to the fore in recent years, effortlessly melding with the environment to create a true sense of serenity and connection to the earth. Colour has entered into the world of upholstery, adding personality and charm to seating. Whether it is a pop of vibrant hues or subtle tones inspired by nature’s palette, these fabrics breathe life into outdoor living areas, infusing them with character and warmth. In the face of changing climate, outdoor furnishings stand resilient, with weatherresistant materials designed to withstand the elements. From durable metals to all-weather wickers, these materials ensure longevity and endurance without compromising on stylish aesthetics or comfort.
Investing in dining tables and chairs for casual yet elegant gatherings creates inviting spaces for al fresco dining, where every meal becomes a celebration of nature’s bounty. As southern Europe enjoys such clement weather most of the year-round, outdoor dining areas are particularly important, bringing the family and friends together to enjoy the delights of home cooking without the confines of four walls.
When seeking refuge from the sun’s rays, shade solutions such as awnings and parasols offer respite and shelter, allowing us to bask in the beauty of the outdoors without the harsh glare. These functional yet sophisticated accents add a touch of elegance while preserving comfort under the open sky. Join us as we uncover the art of creating stylish and serene living areas in the great outdoors.

THE ARTISTRY OF TABLEWARE AND VASES
Tableware serves as much more than just functional items – it offers a full canvas for expressing personal style. When presenting homemade dishes to friends and family, tableware is part of the dining experience, reflecting the tastes and preferences of the host. From elegant porcelain to rustic earthenware, each piece tells a story and sets the tone for the pending meal. With such a wide range of styles to choose from, it is best to invest in quality for long-lasting enjoyment. Where white has always been a safe choice when choosing dinnerware, colour has now gradually become more popular, showing bold artistic expression, delighting the senses and adding captivating charm to any table setting. Whether it is a casual brunch or an elegant dinner party, colourful plates effortlessly infuse character into your culinary presentation. Vases filled with blooms as a centrepiece on a dining table are always a delightful way to enhance a table setting. Whether you choose a plain vase that lets the flowers within it sing from the hilltops or go for a colourful, patterned or sculptural vessel, these little receptacles offer a simple way to brighten up the home – bringing the outside into the interior. Sculptural vases can stand as works of art in their own right, meticulously crafted to captivate the eye, put a smile on guests’ faces and spark conversation, adding a touch of sophistication to any room they grace. Organic-style vases, with their earthy tones, textural details and irregular shapes, serve as an extension to the beauty of nature that is held inside.

THE ART OF LIVING ROOM DESIGN
The living room is our sanctuary, where we should be able to relax in style and where memories are woven into the fabric of everyday life. With this in mind, the furniture within this cherished space can make all the difference, transforming mere functionality into an artful expression of taste and elegance.
Amidst the myriad options for furnishing a living room, one item reigns supreme: the sofa. Beyond its utilitarian purpose, a high-quality sofa curates an experience, a haven where family and friends can gather for years to come and enjoy its comfort and visual appeal.
The layout of your living room is a delicate dance between form and function, where every piece of furniture plays a pivotal role. From the placement of seating to the strategic positioning of coffee tables and side tables, a well-thought-out arrangement fosters both intimacy and practicality, encouraging conversation and facilitating daily life.
As maximalism will always be celebrated by some, sophistication often shines through stronger in a room that has a simplistic design. A clutter-free living room exudes timeless charm, where every element serves a purpose and every detail speaks volumes, embracing a sense of tranquillity and refinement. Create this space in a way that comfort and sophistication can meet, showing a true reflection of your style and sensibilities.

WEAVING WONDERS INTO YOUR LIVING SPACE
Fabrics have the remarkable ability to transform a space, infusing it with warmth and character and making it feel more sumptuous and welcoming. A large, neutral room, often seen as a blank canvas, can greatly benefit from the addition of colourful textiles, bringing a new lease of life into its expansive confines.
Combining textures and hues creates a cohesive and homely feel. Whether it’s layering different patterns or blending contrasting textures, the art lies in orchestrating a sensory experience that resonates with the soul of the space. Beyond their functional purpose, curtains frame windows like works of art, casting ethereal shadows and filtering light to create captivating visual narratives. When it comes to upholstery, the choice of fabric is paramount. Selecting the right upholstery fabric can not only transform a piece of furniture but also pay dividends in terms of durability and longevity, so investing in both style and quality will ensure your furniture exudes timeless elegance for years to come. As we enter into the vibrant spring season, there’s an inherent desire for renewal and freshness. What better way to herald this time of the year of rejuvenation than by adorning our surroundings with fabrics that mirror nature’s vibrant palette?

LOVE AT FIRST LIGHT
The art of successful lighting solutions should go beyond the realms of functionality to find a balance that also achieves a harmonious symphony of mood and style. In contemporary homes, the ethos of minimalism is often an obvious design choice. Clean lines, understated elegance and simplicity are not just preferences but a way of life. However, new collections by leading lighting companies also urge us to make a bold statement with oversized lampshades and sculptural designs –fabulous for creating a focus in a minimalist-style room.
Lighting should be considered in layers, dividing the living space into areas for specific lighting needs. From suspension lamps to wall sconces, table lights and floor lighting, they all bring something to the fore, creating illumination in their respective individual ways, breathing life into every corner of the room and adding an atmosphere of serenity and warmth – as well as, of course, providing practical lighting.
As trends evolve, a new-found appreciation for natural materials has permeated the realm of lighting design. From sustainable wood to raw metals, these materials bring an organic warmth to our living spaces, forging a deeper connection to the natural world.

FROM FUNCTIONAL TO FABULOUS…
CREATING YOUR BATHROOM SANCTUARY
The transition from a functional bathroom to a relaxing and rejuvenating sanctuary can be easily achieved through a few tweaks that don’t necessarily have to break the bank. Washbasins stand as both practical fixtures and aesthetic focal points, coming in a myriad of sizes, colours, materials and shapes and offering homeowners the opportunity to curate bathrooms that express their own personal style. Gone are the days when white bathrooms reigned supreme, with their somewhat sterile and clinical atmosphere. In the contemporary design landscape, the introduction of dark tones has revolutionised bathroom aesthetics, infusing spaces with warmth and tranquillity and adding visual depth and character.
Freestanding bathtubs contribute to creating a luxurious and inviting ambience in the bathroom, evoking a spa-like feel and making a bold statement about the homeowner’s appreciation for style and relaxation. Rain showers, with their soothing and gentle water flow, provide a sense of well-being and are designed to be more water-efficient than traditional shower heads.
Innovative approaches to water conservation and environmental protection have become paramount considerations for bathroom brands that seek to marry functionality and style with sustainability. Recognising the importance of reducing water consumption and minimising environmental impact, these brands are pioneering inventive solutions that revolutionise traditional bathroom fixtures and practices, such as water-saving washbasins and faucets with sensor controls to regulate water flow. Also, the implementation of cutting-edge filtration systems and greywater recycling initiatives is reimagining the way water is managed within the bathroom, promoting sustainability without sacrificing convenience or hygiene.
Take a look here at just some of the many options that have recently come onto the market to enhance your bathroom’s functionality and aesthetics…

Pacesetting Italian firm Modulnova continues to reinforce its commitment to cutting-edge quality and trend-setting innovation following a major renovation of its Marbella showroom last year.
A family business founded in 1988 by Dario, Giuseppe and Carlo Presotto, Modulnova has – since its beginnings – expressed a strong tailoring concept and total flexibility in offering a customised “made to measure” kitchen system for customers. This is thanks to the company’s exceptional design vocabulary and a wide choice of materials and finishes.
Over the years it has expanded its range of products and services, to meet the needs and tastes of a diverse and international clientele. In 2000 the company created a line of bathroom furniture and in 2011 it further enhanced its offer with Modulnova Living, a natural continuation of Modulnova’s entrepreneurial journey and acquired know-how.
Designed by Andrea Bassanello and Carlo Presotto, the expanded and renovated 440 square metres showroom was opened in 2023 as part of Modulnova’s ongoing mission to provide quality and innovation, inject a strong identity into its products, and study new options for improving clients’ living spaces.
At the expanded showroom customers can view kitchens designed using high-quality materials such as Bianco Lasa marble, Emperador marble and Milano walnut, as well as living areas, bathrooms and outdoor kitchens. ART GALLERY NIKA
ART GALLERY NIKA
INNOVATIVE NEW ART GALLERY OPENS IN MÁLAGA
INNOVATIVE NEW ART GALLERY OPENS IN MÁLAGA
INTERVIEW WITH ALEXANDRA KUZNETSOVA AND NIKOLAI KUZNETSOV
What were you doing before you opened the gallery and why did you choose to open in Málaga?
Sasha is the main inspiration and artistic director of our project. She is a creative person who has been engaged in the development and creation of images in various fields – as a designer of clothes, as an interior designer and as a stylist.
The idea to create galleries did not come to us right away. We have been thinking for some time about the formation of an art space where visitors could not only enjoy works of art and original works, but also actively participate in the creative process through workshops and meetings with interesting people.
However, the idea of the gallery finally came to life when we found an amazing place by the sea. The atmosphere of the ancient city of Málaga, the combination of sun and sea, the vibrant life of the coast – all this became an inspiration for us. It was here that our gallery was born, where every visitor will be able to enjoy not only works of art, but also the unique ambience of this place.
How do you choose the artworks for the gallery?
In our gallery, the main criterion for us is the originality of the work and high craftsmanship. We strive to present to visitors works of art “with character”. We have no preferences regarding any particular art school or creative direction. We are interested in everything that is original and innovative. However, we also attach great importance to fine art and mastery of painting or sculpture techniques. This is an important attribute of the works that we present in our gallery. They deserve their place both in the gallery space and in private collections.
What services are you offering your customers over and above simply selling artwork?
We fully appreciate the importance of acquiring works of art. Each work carries uniqueness and a special energy that can change our lives and the environment. Our team of professionals is always happy to help with the selection and purchase of new works. We understand that the selection process can be difficult, especially when it comes to ordering individual work.
FIRST PERSON...
158 MARCH & APRIL 2024
Therefore, we assist in the selection of an artist and provide the necessary support during the entire process. We also readily cooperate with design agencies, helping them choose suitable works of art for interior decoration. We understand the importance of harmony in design and know-how to choose the pieces that best fit into the concept and setting. In addition, we offer a long-term rental service for works of art, which can be especially useful for corporate clients. This is an excellent solution for decorating office spaces, where works of art can not only aesthetically decorate the space, but also create an inspiring atmosphere for employees and visitors.
You are planning to hold events. What will these events entail and how can people find out more about them?
We regularly hold interesting events. First of all, these are master classes on a variety of topics. It is planned to hold chamber concerts, meetings with artists, possibly mini-projects involving theatrical direction. And of course, the exhibitions – at the moment, the schedule of exhibitions has been left until the middle of next year. We report everything on our Internet page and on the gallery’s Instagram, distribute information in
telegram channels and Facebook groups, and advertise in the media, in popular magazines on the Coast.
You are keen to work with interior designers. What can they expect from the collaboration?
Interior decoration with works of art is a task that requires quite a lot of time, painstaking work and attention. It always makes sense to entrust the solution of such a special task to professionals. Taking into account the extensive catalogue of works of art, understanding the capabilities of various artists in terms of fulfilling creative orders, the team at our gallery can select or develop optimal solutions within the framework of the concept formulated by the designers.

THE WHITE HOUSE
CREATING CHIC BESPOKE INTERIOR CONCEPTS
Interior designers creating contemporary home interiors on the Costa del Sol draw their inspiration from a broad spectrum of styles and concepts, from Mediterranean to Nordic with exotic touches incorporated from further afield.
Having a global vision that complements local knowledge is paramount, and one of the pacesetting companies in that respect is The White House. Established in 2011 by principal designer Christina White – from whom the company takes its name – The White House is a bespoke interior design enterprise based in Marbella which has a newly-redesigned website showcasing their projects and details about their concept. After working as an interior designer since completing her studies in 2005, Lovisa de Ruyck is now the sole owner of The White House Marbella, bringing a great blend of experience, creativity and leadership skills to her role.
One of her latest projects was the modern black and white home featured here. The clients wanted to create more warmth with natural textures such as wood, marble and sisal. As Lovisa notes, using warm colours is a key solution for adding comfort and creating a welcoming ambience, as well as incorporating plants and lamps. To that end, and assisted by an expert team of craftspeople to bring her design ideas to life, Lovisa succeeded in delivering a cosy living space highlighted by an elegant Nordic palette of calming neutrals injected with international influences.
At The White House, each scheme is unique, says Lovisa, “created by marrying your requirements and our creative vision to deliver your dream interior”.
Lovisa and her team stay well attuned to interior trends by regularly attending
trade fairs such as the Maison&Objet in Paris, and The White House signature style is constantly evolving to include new techniques and materials. “We know that the key to successful design is to know our clients personally. We want to know what makes you tick, your lifestyle, preferences and of course the budget. We believe that consistent communication is the key to delivering a space that not only fulfils your requirements but also exceeds your expectations.
“Clear communication is crucial and we go the extra mile to make sure we understand your likes, loves and requirements, the space and the timeframe. A continued dialogue and consultations are essential, as we want to create spaces that are perfectly in tune with your style and vision.”
The team will discuss images, styles, colours, fabrics and textures, and visit the home to take measurements and obtain a feel for the clients’ lifestyle. Concepts are then presented in a range of formats, giving them a detailed plan of their finished room or rooms.
Once the design concept is agreed, all samples are presented with the final design, “allowing you to see and feel the fabrics and finishes”. Any adjustments are then made and, finally, the installation is arranged and the homeowners can “look forward to enjoying the interior of their dreams”.

THE MET X EICHHOLTZ COLLECTION
A FUSION OF HERITAGE AND LUXURY
Embarking on an extraordinary collaboration with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Eichholtz was granted unprecedented access to delve into the museum’s galleries and select artworks that laid the foundation for a new collection. The result is The Met x Eichholtz, an exquisite assemblage which marries heritage with luxury.
For an entire year, Eichholtz’s chief creative officer Edwin van der Gun and design team roamed through the museum’s hallowed halls, exploring archives and studying the artefacts. This exclusive access allowed Eichholtz to design a collection that goes beyond aesthetics, encapsulating the essence of history, artistry and culture.
“The privilege of touching pieces, understanding their structure and materiality, felt like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – one that has profoundly shaped our approach to craftsmanship.”
The Met x Eichholtz collection comprises 40 art reproductions, featuring elegant statues meticulously crafted in fine materials such as bronze, brass, and marble. Each piece pays homage to the techniques and cultures of the past, placing a paramount emphasis on authenticity. Through a close collaboration with The Met’s design team, skilled
artisans handcrafted each piece, marked with thedistinguished “The Met x Eichholtz” logo on its base.
“What sets this collection apart is its seamless integration with the existing Eichholtz collections. Aesthetically and atmospherically connected, these pieces seamlessly fit into a wide variety of luxury interiors. While The Met x Eichholtz range serves as a homage to history and culture, it remains rooted in the core values of simplicity, elegance and luxurious lifestyle – a signature aesthetic that defines every Eichholtz collection.”
The rich tapestry of this captivating collection’s history was inspired by more 5,000 years of artistic legacy showcased at the prestigious institution.
“Each piece is a testament to exquisite craftsmanship, meticulously designed to narrate the stories of ancient civilizations through to the contemporary era. Eichholtz’s creative vision and modern interpretation infuses a sense of luxury, making each creation an ideal complement to the sophisticated aesthetics of the modern lifestyle.”

SAIL ON MOOI A UNIQUE CLASSIC YACHT
MOORED IN PUERTO BANÚS
Dutch brothers Jean-Paul and Mikel Geelen always had a passion for restoring classic items, from musical instruments to vehicles and, more recently, a 1966 American Chris Craft yacht. The restoration project took two years – a process which was more of a labour of love than anything else. However, through their meticulous attention to detail and a deep appreciation for the yacht’s rich history, they transformed what was an ailing relic into a resplendent yacht with a renewed beauty and splendour, naming it “Mooi” (which means “beautiful” in Dutch).
In a world where contemporary design often overshadows tradition, this restoration serves as a reminder of the timeless beauty and elegance of classic yachts. Thanks to the vision and dedication of the brothers – who
refused to let the past slip away, choosing instead to honour and preserve the treasures of our maritime heritage for generations to come – the story of this fine boat will continue as a beacon of hope, inspiration and reverence for the majesty of the ocean and the vessels that traverse its boundless depths. The boat is now moored in the glamorous Puerto Banús harbour, where Jean-Paul with his partner Cristina offer unforgettable experiences to anyone who would like to enjoy a sail on their truly unique 18-metre vessel. Mooi can accommodate up to 12 guests but they note that eight people is the perfect number for a group to sit comfortably together. As Mooi is so close to their heart, it is understandable that they prefer to encourage families and professionals to enjoy their boat and they don’t charter for stag or hen parties.

PALAU FUGIT
BOUTIQUE HOTEL IN GIRONA AIMS TO CHARM AND SEDUCE
A disused 18th-century baroque palace in Girona has been transformed into a luxurious boutique hotel for contemporary tourists. The interior design for Palau Fugit – located in the city’s Barri Vell (Old Quarter) – was completed by El Equipo Creativo.
According to the studio, “We aimed to create a sense of high luxury minus the pretensions. We respected the original architecture, of course, but with fresh, elegant, surprising and, at times, a little disruptive elements.”
El Equipo Creativo used the “two Gironas” as their creative starting point. The first is the Barri Vell, with its weathered stone façades, hidden cul-desacs, porticoes and stone ramparts. In contrast, the designers highlighted the city’s lighter side: the vibrant colours of townhouses that flank the River Onyar, as well as Girona’s famous spring celebration – El Temps de Flors (The Time of Flowers).
“These influences, enhanced with striking modern art and crafted objects, create a hotel that begs to be discovered and enjoyed.”
The Palau Fugit building unfolds in two principal parts, both “adapted to the needs of modern travellers and experience hunters” by the Barcelonabased architecture studio Isern Associats.
The first is an arched courtyard, renamed “La Placeta” and including the reception area, restaurant, and cocktail bar, as well as a “tucked-away spa-for-one”. Guests ascend to rooms via the palace’s original staircase.
The second part, named the “Pavelló”, is an annex that “takes shape with a modern, rational approach”. Both volumes are connected by a terrace with a small swimming pool, abundant ferns and a central sculpture by local artist Frederic Amat, providing a serene oasis for guests and a natural connection between the two buildings.
For the rooms in El Palauet, El Equipo Creativo say they reimagined the sumptuous décor of the fin de siècle through a prism of contemporary design and art. “The designers’ goal was to instil a ‘feminine’ presence throughout, recreating the warm and eclectic ambiance of a noble family nest.” Their rich visual experiences are further enhanced by a curation of paintings, sculptures, murals and photographs – all original works by local artists.
Each room and suite presents its own design story, but gothic arches and porticoes, a dominant architectural motif of Girona’s Barri Vell, are a recurring influence and narrative.
TRAVEL & GETAWAYS...
168 MARCH & APRIL 2024
“Curvaceous chaise longues, bespoke rattan bed heads and avantgarde lighting enfold the guest. Surfaces and textiles, from velvet drapes to strategically placed mirrors, invite the user to linger and relax in this historic setting.”
Anchoring each room is a custom-made marble vanity unit, a monolithic interpretation of the dressing table that exemplifies domestic life of the period. The rooms feature a palette of natural stone shades and soft blues, greys and blush tones, creating an elegant and contemporary mise-en-scène that lends new life to original features such as ceiling roses and carved balcony shutters.
The mood changes in El Pavelló – “an ode to ‘la dolce vita’ of the Mediterranean”. A palette of terracotta, locally made ceramics and wood adds a mid-century chic feel to the rooms, each enhanced by natural light entering through direct patio access. Handmade terracotta breeze blocks and tiles create rippling shadows and textured surfaces, while rattan chairs and occasion tables evoke local Costa Brava craft ateliers. “With splashes of colour and handspun textiles, the overall feel is at once casually glamorous and effortlessly cool.”
The hotel’s restaurant, Casa Heras, is inspired by the social and hospitality areas of the original palace and adapted to modern lifestyles and comfort. Contemporary art and objects elevate the spaces, including whimsical wall murals created by Joana Santamans and bespoke ceramic pieces by Núria Gimbernat.
Adjacent to this, El Salon provides a space for cocktails and intimate conversation, surrounded by vestiges of the palau’s ancient walls. The library is a distinguished space conceived for private banquets and meetings around an oval marble table.
In the reception area, guests check in at a bespoke Yves Klein blue table, overhung by a golden chandelier. This composition sets the tone for the rest of the hotel – “a concept that balances history and modernity, formality and informality, and offers a unique and welcoming base while experiencing the rich history and culture of Girona”.

THE HARBOUR BAR & RESTAURANT
EXQUISITE DINING WITH EXCEPTIONAL VIEWS
Perched up in Club Marítimo in Marbella’s buzzing marina, The Harbour Bar & Restaurant enjoys superlative views across the charming port and Mediterranean Sea. Owned by the Quinlan family, who also are the proprietors of the popular The Playwright restaurant in Elviria, The Harbour has become a firm favourite for many. Even though the restaurant is relatively large, with indoor dining as well as tables available on their covered terrace, reserving ahead of time is paramount to ensure a table. Owner and trained chef Marc Quinlan has a passion for creative contemporary cuisine, and this is patently clear when you peruse the menu and see how the dishes are put together. The menu is comprehensive, offering a wide range of international cuisine at reasonable prices. The portion sizes are generous and every detail in the cooking and presentation has been carefully thought out. From salads, fish, seafood and meat to pasta and paella, all dishes comprise good-quality fresh ingredients and there really is something for everyone.
The restaurant maximises its fabulous views, which can be enjoyed in all the dining areas, and the design is cosy and inviting with a slightly colonial
feel. To soften the overall look of the décor, they have installed several eyecatching blossom trees which add a delicate design touch and a splash of feminine colour.
Their large bar area is ideal for guests to gather for pre-meal drinks (or a sumptuous cocktail) and the dining area, both inside and on the terrace, houses large and well-spaced tables with very comfortable seating. The staff at The Harbour are always very friendly and attentive and they seem genuinely happy to receive you. Often there is live entertainment, which is always a real hit with the diners, creating a convivial ambience and a wonderful way to enjoy a meal with friends or family.

CARPACCIO
DELICACIES FOR SPRING
We love the great variations of carpaccio, and it is truly difficult to choose a favourite. Therefore, we have made a small selection from our gourmet menus, to awaken your curiosity for the spring season. All are super-fast and easy for you to make.
On the side we give you the recipes for our tzatziki and red and green pestos, which marry well with the carpaccios.
One of our big secrets is dehydrated “Alma de Caviar” from Riofrío, an absolute game-changer in flavours that comes in a custom-made grinder. Use it on top of the carpaccio or on your favourite food – even better with a little olive oil and a squeeze of lime.
Our selection of gourmet carpaccios:
• Red tuna with teriyaki sauce and seaweed salad
• Cecina de buey (the best cured premium beef from Okelan) and Riofrío caviar
• Galician octopus with red caviar, also with grated Riofrío caviar
• Vodka-beetroot and dill cured salmon with lime-mayo and green pesto drops (You can find the recipes for these in previous issues of Home & Lifestyle Magazine.)
CREATIVE RECIPES...
172 MARCH & APRIL 2024
Creamy Tzatziki
1 organic cucumber
1 chopped shallot
3 finely-chopped cloves garlic
150 gr Greek yoghurt
Maldon salt and freshly-ground pepper fresh dill and lime to taste
Grate the cucumber and place it into a clean cotton cloth, then squeeze out most of the liquid. Stir the cucumber with the Greek yoghurt and finely-chopped shallots and garlic, and season with a bit of lime juice, salt and pepper. You can easily make this in advance – a few hours in the fridge gives an even better flavour.
Red & Green Pesto
1 glass sun-dried tomatoes in oil (red pesto)
2 bunches fresh basil (green pesto)
150 gr Parmesan cheese
100 gr pine nuts
2 shallots
1/2 fresh red chilli to taste
2 cloves garlic
1 dl olive oil
salt and pepper
Toast the pine nuts on a hot pan without any grease, until they turn golden, and leave for a few minutes to cool down.
Cut the Parmesan cheese into smaller dices, add them to a blender with the olive oil, shallots, garlic and chilli, then give them a few rounds at low intervals until they obtain a rough consistency. Add the fresh basil or sun-dried tomatoes with half the oil from the glass together with the pine nuts and the rest of the spices. Blend briefly so that there are still some pieces left.
We prefer a rough consistency for the pesto, which gives your guests an idea of what it contains – and no doubt that it is homemade! Both pestos can be made in advance and stored in the fridge, always with a thin layer of oil to cover the top. If you are not a fan of strong food, leave out the chilli and you have a delicious basic pesto.
Besides being a gourmet accessory for one of our delicious carpaccios, both pestos can be used with homemade naan bread, wraps and sandwiches, or drops on top of creamy soups. They are a good alternative to butter and oil, or simply fantastic tossed into any kind of pasta.

CHOCOLATE MAY HELP
BOOST BRAIN HEALTH AND MOOD
MEDICAL
MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER
If you would characterise your relationship with chocolate as complicated, you’re not alone. Sweet, velvety and smooth, chocolate thrills the senses, making it very popular especially on Valentine’s Day. There is mounting evidence that a few nibbles of dark chocolate can not only satisfy a craving but also be beneficial for your health.
Lee S. Berk, an associate dean of research affairs at the School of Allied Health Professions and a researcher in psychoneuroimmunology and food science at Loma Linda University, has been studying chocolate and its effects on human health for many years. His team has found that consuming
Researchers have not come up with a hard and fast recommendation of how much dark chocolate should be consumed to achieve the potential health benefits. Experts recommend minimally processed dark chocolate with at least 70 per cent cacao content, and maybe have an ounce (28 grams) as an occasional treat. You should always check the label to be aware of the calorie, fat and sugar content, which could potentially affect the overall health benefit.
Eating chocolate at least once a week has been linked with a reduced risk of heart disease, according to research published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, a journal of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). The researchers conducted a combined analysis of studies from the past five decades examining the association between chocolate consumption and coronary artery disease (blockage of the coronary arteries).
dark chocolate that has a high concentration of cacao (minimally 70 per cent cacao, 30 per cent organic cane sugar) has positive effects on stress levels, inflammation, mood, memory and immunity.
“Consumption of 70 per cent cacao has been shown to increase gamma brain frequency, which is associated with reducing incidence of dementia, memory loss and recall,” said Berg. “Brain gamma frequency is positively associated with inducing some of the higher levels of cognitive processing in the human brain. Cacao is also associated with increasing beneficial neuropeptides in the brain and thus enhancing mood state.”
Plant-based bioactive compounds called flavan-3-ols found in dark chocolate and other foods are known to promote health. While you don’t need these compounds to survive, studies have shown that bioactives can play a role in reducing chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. They show that eating foods which contain flavan-3-ols may improve blood pressure, cholesterol concentrations and blood sugar.
Consuming moderate amounts of chocolate has also been associated with significantly lower risk of being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (AF), a common and dangerous type of irregular heartbeat. In a large study of men and women in Denmark led by researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and in Denmark it was found that there were benefits from chocolate and its ability to lower the risk of arrhythmias. Beth Czerwony, RD, registered dietitian for Cleveland Clinic, recommends avoiding anything with a lot of chemicals. The less ingredients, the better. Another added perk: dark chocolate with 85 per cent cocoa has been shown to have moodboosting effects. For those wondering about white chocolate, Czerwony said that’s not really even chocolate at all. It’s more of a wax and tends to have the most sugar and fat.
The history of chocolate, which is derived from the beans of the cacao tree, can be traced to the ancient Maya, and even earlier to the ancient Olmecs of southern Mexico. Much later Christopher Columbus encountered the cacao bean on his fourth mission to the Americas in 1502, according to Wikipedia. He and his crew seized a large native canoe that proved to contain, among other goods for trade, cacao beans. Columbus’ son Ferdinand commented that the natives greatly valued the beans, which he termed almonds. Later, chocolate became popular in the courts of Europe and the streets of colonial America, and it soon evolved into the universally loved commodity it is today.

THE LONG AND SHORT OF FASTING
BY RACHEL GARROD
Fasting as a religious practice has been around for millennia. Muslims fast during Ramadan, Christians during Lent and Jews recognise Yom Kippur with a day of fasting. However, in recent years fasting has become revered for the more earthly attribute of weight loss.
There are different types of fasting: typically, Intermittent Fasting (IF) such as 2:5, where people eat very little (often around 500 calories) for two days of the week and then normally for the rest of the week. Alternatively, the fasting may be achieved by Time Restricted Eating (TRE), where food and drink are consumed within a fixed window, perhaps seven hours, but nothing is taken before or after that window. One example of TRE would be where the individual first eats or drinks at 12 pm and again at 7pm and then refrains from further calorie intake until the following midday. There are numerous studies purporting significant benefits, not only in terms of weight loss but also reductions in markers of inflammation and improvements in insulin regulation (an important hormone in metabolic health.)
In a review article published in 2023, author Jaramillo and colleagues concluded that both IF and TRE were beneficial for weight loss. In addition to weight loss, some studies showed improvement in the management of blood sugar (glycaemic control) and in two studies cholesterol and triglyceride rates improved.
One study of Alternate Day Fasting (low calorie one day, normal diet the next) showed a better response to insulin than calorie-controlled dieting. However, the review did point out that many of the changes reported in individual studies were larger in magnitude than average changes across several studies and that long term measures of health are unknown when comparing fasting regimes with calorie-controlled diets.
The upshot appears to be that fasting is an effective method of weight loss that may also have other benefits, such as improved cardiovascular health, and lowered risk of dementia and diabetes. Since there are many different regimes, all of which are likely to have some success, it is best to consider individual preferences.
TRE eating can be difficult if alcohol is consumed in the evening or if latenight snacks are an indulgence. In this case an IF approach such as the 2:5 or even Alternate Day Fasting could be more easily adhered to. Whichever the method, achieving weight loss may be easier than it sometimes feels.

CJEU RULING AND ITS
IMPACT ON LENDING
IN SPAIN
ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS
The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) issued a ruling in January referring to the obligation of lenders to assess a consumer’s creditworthiness before granting a loan. Otherwise, according to national law, the loan can be declared void, which means that the lender loses the right to payment of the agreed interest.
Directive 2008/48 (Article 8) establishes an obligation for member states to ensure that, before signing a credit agreement, the creditor assesses the consumer’s creditworthiness. This is based on sufficient information, provided by the consumer if necessary, and – where appropriate – by consulting the relevant database. If this assessment is not carried out, member states may impose sanctions as they deem appropriate.
The CJEU states in its judgement that it is important that lenders do not lend irresponsibly or without first assessing the creditworthiness of the borrower. It also requires member states to carry out the necessary checks to prevent such behaviour.
In addition, the directive notes that the creditworthiness assessment must be carried out continuously during the business relationship. The
creditor must update the consumer’s financial information and reassess his creditworthiness before significantly increasing the amount of credit. What is interesting about this ruling is that it provides for the possibility of sanctioning a creditor for not fully assessing the consumer’s creditworthiness even if the consumer has fully repaid the loan and has not objected to the contract during the repayment process: i.e. after the end of the contractual relationship between lender and borrower. According to the CJEU, a breach of the lender’s obligation to check the consumer’s creditworthiness cannot be remedied by the mere fact that the credit agreement has been fully concluded, or that the consumer has not raised any objection against the credit agreement during the repayment period.
