LIFESTYLE & LEISURE

EDITOR’S

“Please allow me to introduce myself…”

You might notice that there is a new name at the end of this letter. After years of consummate professionalism as Editor at Home & Lifestyle, Peter Leonard has left to enjoy a well-earned retirement. I have known Peter for over 20 years, so it is a real honour to be taking over from him as Editor. Peter, you are going to be a tough act to follow!

The arrival of the summer season shifts the lifestyle and design focus to outdoor living. Alfresco lunches by the pool, unforgettable evenings with family and friends under the stars, or simply creating a shaded spot to relax with a cool drink and a good book. If you are planning to redesign or rejuvenate your garden, terrace or any other outdoor space this summer, our outdoor furniture feature on the latest trends and “must have” pieces will provide plenty of ideas.

It may be the height of summer, but the largest brands and most influential figures in the industry are already planning for the major design fairs in the autumn. Once again, we are delighted to be an official media sponsor at this year’s Feria Hábitat València. Taking place in Valencia at the end of September, Feria Hábitat València is one of the biggest and most important design fairs in Spain.

The influx of visitors over the summer, combined with the high-end developments and luxury hotels currently under construction, makes life a little more “challenging” than normal. There is, however, a positive side to this seasonal disruption, as people discover the fantastic lifestyle of southern Spain and decide to relocate permanently. International companies and established brands are also beginning to regard Marbella as a desirable location to promote their services, while the local market continues to flourish.

Summer 2024 may prove to be the one of the most significant for the industry.

Enjoy your summer!

SOAK UP THE STYLE THIS SUMMER

The arrival of the sun-soaked Mediterranean summer allows outdoor spaces to become stylish extensions of our homes. Outdoor furniture blends seamlessly with the natural environment this season, while offering unmatched durability and comfort.

Earthy colours that harmonise with their surrounding environment dominate, giving a tranquil and cohesive look that evokes a sense of calm and reducing the visual impact of furniture on the landscape. However, the addition of swathes of bright colour are a dramatic way to inject your own personality and visual interest into outdoor spaces. Durability is key for outdoor furniture. As a result, furniture items crafted from hardwearing materials that easily withstand harsh weather conditions such as teak, aluminium, and synthetic wicker are proving increasingly popular. Teak resists both moisture and pests, while aluminium offers lightweight strength and resistance to rust. Synthetic wicker combines the classic look of natural wicker with heightened durability, ensuring that furniture retains its appearance over time.

Effective shade solutions are essential for enjoying outdoor spaces in comfort this summer. Parasols now come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and mechanisms, including tilting and rotating features that allow for maximum coverage throughout the day. Awnings, both retractable and stationary, offer extensive shade and can be integrated into the architecture of the home, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living areas.

Alfresco dining during the summer is one on the quintessential outdoor living experiences. Once again, tables and chairs are crafted from durable materials such as teak and aluminium to ensure longevity and ease of maintenance. Whether your ideal vision of outdoor living is minimalist and modern, or rustic and traditional, you are sure to find the furniture that completes your concept. Functional features such as extendable tables, stackable chairs, and weather-resistant finishes add versatility, durability and convenience. Discover these fresh ideas to enhance your outdoor living space this summer…

LIVING ROOMS FOR COMFORTABLE LIVING

It’s a jungle out there. In today’s fast-paced world, creating a calming yet inviting living room is more important than ever for you to kick back, relax and enjoy some much needed “me“ time. A well-designed living space can provide a much-needed escape from the chaos of everyday life. By incorporating natural materials, a soothing colour palette and minimalist forms, you can create a relaxing environment that truly promotes tranquillity and peace. The benefits of connecting with nature to alleviate stress have been well documented. Natural materials are essential in creating a calming atmosphere, as they bring a sense of the outdoors inside, and connect us to nature while promoting relaxation. Wood, stone and natural fibres add earthy tones and an organic feel, which enhance the natural feel of the space.

Choosing the right colours for your living room is crucial in creating a relaxing environment. Soft, muted, and understated colours can make the room feel calm and inviting. For a soothing palette, neutral tones with shades of white, beige, and grey are excellent choices as they provide a clean and airy feel and can easily be complemented with other natural materials. Soft pastel colours such as sage green, dusty blue, or blush pink add subtle hues without overwhelming the senses, contributing to a serene ambience. Monochromatic colour schemes create a harmonious and cohesive look that utilise varying shades of a single colour and that can add depth and interest without creating visual clutter.

The focus on minimalist design, simplicity and functionality is key to maintaining a relaxing living room. By choosing minimalist forms for your furniture and decor, you can keep the space feeling uncluttered and open. Low sofas and coffee tables are instrumental in creating an airy environment, allowing your room to breathe and embrace negative space, making the room feel less crowded. Finally, add personal touches that provide familiarity and comfort, such as family photos, favourite books or cherished mementos, but be mindful to keep these items minimal to maintain the overall sense of calm.

CREATING THE SUPERLATIVE DINING EXPERIENCE

In your home where are most of your memories made? Where have you laughed, celebrated and loved with your family and close friends? The overwhelming answer is the dining area. It is not merely a functional space where people gather to share meals and stories. It is the central hub of your property: an integral part of daily home life and for special occasions and where you bond over food, wine and conversation.

The choice of furniture, such as finely crafted wooden dining tables and comfortable chairs, can transform this space into a welcoming and functional environment. Wooden tables, in particular, are renowned for their durability and natural beauty. As they age gracefully and acquire character, they add a timeless appeal to the dining area. Comfortable seating is equally important, as it encourages guests to relax and enjoy their time at the table. Chairs that are the correct size and style in relation to the table are essential for both aesthetic harmony and practical functionality. Together, the dining table and chairs create a cohesive and inviting space that enhances the dining experience.

Mobitec’s solid wood Blossom dining table has rounded corners and two large strong legs located in the centre of the table. This allows people to move their legs without hindrance, making the Blossom very comfortable to sit around. The table is shown here alongside their Thalia seating collection. INSPIRATIONAL BATHROOM DESIGN

Bathrooms have long been sanctuaries of personal retreat, where aesthetics and functionality intertwine to create the perfect ambiance to unwind. Traditionally, minimalist design has dominated the scene, characterised by clean lines, neutral palettes, and an emphasis on simplicity. New collections, however, are embracing bold colours that bring a vibrant energy to these spaces. For those who prefer a softer touch, calming, serene hues that transform the bathroom into a peaceful haven are also becoming more prominent.

The focus on maintaining a clutter-free environment through innovative storage solutions is of great importance in the bathroom. Too often, personal care products are simply left out on surfaces, which can look unsightly. Cleverly designed cabinetry and hidden compartments ensure that your bathroom essentials are safely stowed away, enhancing the minimalist ethos while accommodating more expressive styles.

At the other end of the spectrum from these sleek, minimalist designs, there is a move towards creating more organic and natural-style bathrooms, evoking a calming sense of nature and tranquillity, and bringing the outdoors in. The use of natural materials, soft colour palettes, botanicals and “Boho” accessories all help to curate an atmosphere that feels both luxurious and grounded.

When designing your bathroom, remember that small details can make a big difference. Thoughtful touches like ample storage, a luxurious rain shower, or a statement faucet or washbasin can elevate the space and add that coveted “wow” factor.

The Ilbagnoalessi bathroom is the result of a recent collaboration between Laufen and Alessi. This washbasin has an integrated pedestal and comes in their following colour versions: white Laufen Clean Coat, white matt, black matt and caffé matt. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEDROOM DESIGN

We all know that getting the right amount of sleep is important for improving your overall health and well-being. Equally important, however, is the quality of your sleep and a well-designed bedroom can be the superlative setting for your slumbers. Creating the ideal bedroom involves a harmonious blend of calming colour palettes, a supportive mattress, and quality furniture that complement the overall design of the room, while offering practical features can enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of your sleeping space. Like it or not, there is no getting away from the fact that a minimalist design in the bedroom - clean lines, tidiness and a sense of order - contributes to a peaceful ambiance – and no one does this better than the Scandinavians. Our Nordic friends know a thing or two about snuggling up during those long winter nights, and have gained widespread acclaim for using handcrafted natural materials while employing the distinctive design philosophy of “less is more”.

One of the key elements in creating a serene bedroom environment is the use of calming colour palettes such as soft hues, muted tones and warm neutrals. These produce a calming effect on the mind and contribute to a soothing atmosphere, which in turn promote relaxation. Soft tactile fabrics also provide cosiness to a space and, more than ever, we are seeing headboards and bed frames merging into one, upholstered in the same fabric to add a cohesive and harmonious overall aesthetic.

A crucial component of any bedroom is, of course, what you actually sleep on. Investing in a mattress that offers excellent support is essential for maintaining proper spinal alignment and ensuring a good night’s sleep. A high-quality mattress can alleviate pressure points, reduce discomfort, and prevent the tossing and turning that often disrupts sleep. Here are some ideas for your bedroom that could awaken the senses…

THE MAGIC OF CARPETS

Rugs are more than just a decorative afterthought; a well-chosen piece can dramatically transform the ambiance of a living space. Combing both aesthetics and functionality, rugs make a significant contribution to the overall comfort and style of a room.

Colour plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a room, so choosing a rug in soothing colours can significantly enhance the peace and comfort of your space. Soft, muted tones such as pastel blues, gentle greens, and warm beiges are perfect for creating a serene environment, providing a calming effect, reducing stress and promoting relaxation.

The texture of a rug is just as important as its colour. Different textures can add depth, interest, and a tactile comfort to a room. From plush, highpile rugs to sleek, flat-weaves, the texture can define the character of the room. The former, for example, are incredibly soft underfoot and perfect for creating a luxurious, relaxing feel in bedrooms and living areas. Sleek, flatweaves, by contrast, give a more modern and streamlined look and are great for high-traffic areas like hallways and dining rooms. Alternatively, rugs made from natural materials such as jute or sisal add an organic, earthy touch, enhancing a natural, rustic aesthetic.

Rugs can also improve the acoustics of a room. Hard surfaces like wood, tile and concrete can reflect sound, amplifying any noise and even producing echoes. Rugs help to absorb sound and reduce general noise and “clatter”, as well as being great for cushioning footsteps, making them ideal for multi-story homes or apartments. Take a look at these ideas…

THE ART OF ILLUMINATION

Lighting is an essential element of interior design that not only affects the ambience of a space but also enhances its functionality and aesthetics. Pendant lights for example, can serve as striking decorative pieces. Whether hung over a kitchen island, dining table, in the centre of a living room or in an entryway, their ability to blend form and function makes them a popular choice for homeowners seeking to make a bold statement.

The importance of good reading lights cannot be overstated for bookworms or those working from home. Designed to provide adequate illumination without straining the eyes, they come in various forms, including floor lamps, table lamps, and wallmounted options, each offering versatility and convenience. Positioned correctly, they can enhance your reading nook or bedroom, making it a cosy retreat.

In small spaces, wall lamps can often be a practical option, leaving surfaces less cluttered with lamps and giving an airier feel to the room. Wall lamps that double up as mirrors are an innovative solution that maximises utility without compromising on style, and are ideal for bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways.

Even though decorative luminaires can provide a real “wow-factor” to a room, minimalist lighting embodies the principle of “less is more”. The clean lines, neutral colours, and unobtrusive designs blend seamlessly into contemporary interiors, creating a calm atmosphere and highlighting the beauty in simplicity. So, when choosing lighting solutions, think carefully about functionality and how the space is used and decorated, to enhance not only the aesthetics, but also your lifestyle.

Fabrics play a pivotal role in transforming spaces. As we move through 2024, there is a noticeable trend towards natural materials and designs inspired by nature. Industry leaders are increasingly revealing fabric collections that echo the serenity of the outdoors, bringing a touch of organic beauty into the home. Many recent collections have embraced both simplicity and ethnic influences, highlighting artisanal craftsmanship that adds a unique and personal touch to interiors. Intricate patterns and textures that celebrate cultural heritage and skills offer a timeless appeal, blending modern minimalism with traditional artistry. The shift towards natural fabrics is not merely aesthetic; it also reflects a growing consciousness about sustainability and eco-friendliness. Linen, cotton, and wool are among the top choices for their durability, comfort, and minimal environmental impact. These materials not only enhance the tactile experience but also resonate with the desire for a more sustainable living environment. When it comes to curtains, sheers remain a perennial favourite in the summer months. THE HEART OF MODERN LIVING WITH CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN DESIGN

No other room in the home has undergone such a fundamental change as the kitchen. What was once regarded as merely a dreary and functional room for food preparation has been transformed into the integral hub of the modern home. Whether it is a healthy breakfast before the school run, a catch up over coffee with a friend, impromptu entertaining with friends or a relaxed dinner with quality time at the end of the day, the modern kitchen is firmly the focus.

Open-plan kitchens reflect this new philosophy, breaking down traditional barriers and creating an inviting space that encourages conversation and togetherness, seamlessly integrating with living and dining areas, providing a fluid space where family members can come together. This layout not only enhances the functionality of the home but also makes it easier to keep an eye on children, entertain guests, and stay connected with loved ones while cooking.

A well-designed kitchen balances aesthetics with functionality, often achieved through the careful selection of materials and finishes. Combining different textures and colours can add visual interest and depth to the space. Maintaining a calming atmosphere in the kitchen is also essential. Given that this space is often bustling with activity, thoughtful design choices can help create a serene and inviting environment. Neutral or earthy colour palettes, ample natural light and uncluttered surfaces contribute to a sense of calm and order. Integrating elements of nature, such as potted plants or natural stone countertops, can further enhance tranquillity.

It goes without saying that technological advancements within this area of the home makes daily life easier and more efficient. They not only revolutionise how we cook and store food but also how we interact with our kitchen spaces. The choice of materials plays a crucial role in creating spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable and resistant to the rigors of daily use. Recent innovations in materials have transformed kitchen surfaces, cabinetry, and finishes, making them more resilient, sustainable, and long lasting. Take a look at these ideas…

Like all Falcon range cookers, the Professional+ 90 is designed for people who take good food seriously. Produced in the UK by AGA Rangemaster, the oldest and most experienced range cooker manufacturer, the Professional+ 90 comprises two electric fan ovens and a separate glide-out grill. It is available with an induction hob with five cooking zones or a gas hob with five burners and includes a powerful four-kilowatt multi-ring burner, a wok cradle and griddle. The Professional+ is available in 90 centimetres, 100 centimetres and 110 centimetres and comes in four colours with chrome controls and handles. The VIPP V3 kitchen features modules made from vertically extruded profiles and curved edges for a light sophistication and a change from the brand’s usual industrial look. The kitchen is available in three different modules: island, wall and tall, however their freestanding modules are made from naturally anodised aluminium which CEO, Kasper Egelund believes creates “a unique kitchen that feel like a sculptural piece on its own”. VIPP is available from High-End Homes in C/ Jesús Puente 21B in Puerto Banús (www.high-endhomes.com).

The minimalist lines of this contemporary open kitchen and living area by

Bistro is Ballingslöv’s most popular kitchen. The smooth doors are easy to maintain and come in an array of attractive colours. Bistro goes very well with their Fenix range, seen here for the cupboard doors, which when scratched with daily wear and tear, can be easily removed. Reeded glass for the cupboard doors provides visual interest and an airy feel, while also giving a degree of privacy. The Ballingslöv showroom is situated in Centro Plaza in Nueva Andalucía (www.ballingslov-marbella.se).

Above The overall aesthetic of this kitchen is contemporary and sophisticated, with a strong emphasis on clean lines and contrasting colours. The combination of the tall white vertical cupboards, dark stone splashback and worktop, and glass cabinetry, creates a balanced and visually appealing space. The use of marble veining adds a touch of natural elegance, making the kitchen both functional and stylish. ELENA FERNÁNDEZ, FOUNDER OF VILUSEN PROJECT

ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS, PHILOSOPHIES AND FUTURE TRENDS IN ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

How did you start your career in lighting? Have you had any mentors or role models in this industry and, if so, how have they influenced your career?

I began my career by studying lighting design and gaining practical experience in lighting projects with my father who was fundamentally my mentor and spearheaded my professional development. They shared their experience, knowledge and for this, my company is called Vilusen which is an acronym of the letters from my motto of “Vida, Luz, Sensaciones” which means in English, “Life, Light, Feelings”.

What strategies do you use to ensure your company stands out in the competitive lighting market?

There are several. The first is product quality. I have always chosen lighting products of high quality and durability. The second is innovation. This entails keeping up to date with the latest trends and technologies in lighting. Finally, ensuring excellent customer service and personalised advice for each client.

How has the lighting industry evolved since you began your career, particularly in the area of architectural lighting?

There have been two main developments. The introduction of LED technology has revolutionised the industry, offering greater energy efficiency and creative possibilities. In addition, the development of intelligent control systems has allowed greater flexibility and customised solutions in architectural lighting.

What are the most important elements to consider when designing architectural lighting for a project?

I would say that there are three main considerations. Functionality is a major consideration, making sure that you have appropriate lighting

requirements for each space. Then you have to consider the aesthetics, creating an attractive environment by striking the right balance between function and aesthetics. I also always prioritise the use of technologies and designs that minimise energy consumption.

What are the typical mistakes people make when installing lighting in their homes?

The main mistake when people install more lights than it is actually necessary; and not planning properly. Many people fail to consider the distribution of light and the atmosphere that they want to create in each space.

How do you approach client relationships and ensure their vision comes to life in your lighting designs?

Clear communication is the key. I cannot stress enough how important it is to listen carefully to the client’s needs and desires, so that you are able translate their vision into the lighting design. Working in collaboration with architects and designers as part of our team, it is also essential in realising a client’s dream.

What trends do you think will shape the future of the lighting industry, especially in architectural and decorative lighting?

I think that there will be two main trends. Sustainable lighting with an increased focus on green and energy-efficient designs and secondly, personalised lighting solutions adaptable to the individual needs of each project.

INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABILITY:

DESIGNING LUXURY

GARDENS

AND POOLS ON THE COSTA DEL SOL

The Golden Triangle, made up of the exclusive towns of Marbella, Estepona and Benahavís, is a Mediterranean paradise that attracts those seeking both luxury and natural beauty. The increasing drought on the Costa del Sol, however, and subsequent water restrictions have transformed the way in which gardens and pools are designed in these five-star dream villas. At Atlas Group, we have adopted innovative and sustainable techniques to maintain the elegance and sustainability of these outdoor spaces without compromising natural resources.

Adaptation to the Mediterranean Environment

The key to sustainable landscape design lies in the selection of plants suitable for our Mediterranean climate. Instead of opting for species that require large amounts of water, we focus on indigenous and drought-resistant flora such as Mastic, Rosemary and Olive trees. These plants not only survive with less water and have fewer pests and diseases, but also provide a natural aesthetic and a pleasant aroma, evoking the essence of the Costa del Sol. The use of xerophytic gardens is another technique that we have integrated into our projects. These gardens are designed to minimise water use, using

gravel, pine bark, decorative stones and careful planning of vegetation by grouping it according to its water needs. This approach not only conserves water, but also reduces maintenance and provides a modern and clean visual appeal.

The new varieties of grass that we use in our projects have a water consumption between 40% and 60% lower than conventional types of grass, and a need for mowing and fertilisation up to 50% less. Water savings are not at odds with a perfect lawn.

Despite irrigation restrictions, it is possible to maintain healthy and lush gardens using intelligent and efficient irrigation systems. At Atlas Group we implement drip irrigation technology and rain and soil moisture sensors that optimise water use, ensuring that each plant receives exactly what it needs, without waste. These systems even allow you to control irrigation from anywhere in the world, alerting you via apps if there is abnormally high-water consumption.

The choice of materials also plays a crucial role in the sustainability of our projects. At Atlas Group, we prioritise the use of recycled and locally sourced

materials for the construction of paths, terraces and other structures in the garden. These materials not only reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation, but also better integrate with the natural environment, creating a harmonious and sustainable landscape

Sustainable Pools

Pool design has also evolved to be more sustainable. Saltwater pools are a popular alternative to traditional chlorine pools, as they are more environmentally friendly and require less chemical maintenance. In addition, Atlas Group uses automatic covers that reduce water evaporation and maintain temperature, thus decreasing the need for frequent fillings and energy use for heating. The integration of state-of-the-art filtration systems and efficient water recirculation are key aspects in the design of our pools. These systems not only improve water quality, but also reduce chemical consumption and maintenance.

Education and Awareness

Finally, we believe that education and awareness are essential for sustainability. We inform our clients about sustainable practices and

provide them with the necessary tools to maintain their gardens and pools responsibly. We offer ongoing advice and maintenance services that ensure that luxury villas not only remain spectacular, but also respect and protect the environment.

The drought situation on the Costa del Sol has been a catalyst for innovation and the adoption of sustainable techniques in the design of luxury gardens and pools. At Atlas Group, we are committed to creating outdoor spaces that not only impress with their beauty, but also contribute to the conservation of our valuable natural resources. Through careful plant selection, advanced irrigation technologies, sustainable pool designs and the use of eco-friendly materials, we continue to redefine luxury and remain market leaders.

TIMELESS, DISCREET LUXURY

In a stunning tribute to Milan and its history, architect Flaviano Capriotti has interpreted the spirit of an iconic hotel with a series of suites that hint at discreet, whispered luxury.

Against the 19th-century backdrop of the Park Hyatt Milano — a luxury 5-star hotel just steps from the Milan Cathedral — Flaviano Capriotti Architetti has created a unique concept for the new rooms, whose character, style and flawless attention to detail reflect the hotel’s devotion to high-end hospitality. That concept is most evident in the three signature suites — Duomo, Montenapoleone, and Brera. Capriotti’s inspiration for the new suites came from the Italian post-war design masters. Employing traditional materials and favouring soft, neutral shades, he has created welcoming, comfortable suites with a discreet and timeless luxury.

Flaviano Capriotti Architetti’s concept was one of a simple and refined modernity, where the high quality of the materials, functionality, and a clear perception of space, plays a key role. Although differing in size, the signature suites all bear the same structural, material, and stylistic mark. This visual narrative blends history, design, literature, and poetry, as well as the location. ‘The hotel is located in a rather dense urban area with a beautiful

view of the Galleria, allowing guests to stay within a sanctuary in the city centre, protected from the external world,’ explains Capriotti. A fundamental aspect is the lighting. ‘The quality of the light plays a critical role. It should be warm and create the right shadows and accents. A lighting system should not be perceived, precisely because it should enwrap guests softly and naturally,’ the architect explains. In the suites on the top floor, Capriotti has created a blended zone between indoors and outdoors. The Montenapoleone and Duomo suites have terraces and living rooms with large veranda-style areas. The living area opens on one side of the suite, while the other side is dedicated to the terrace, which allows guests to stay in the centre of Milan discreetly, spending evenings outdoors, surrounded by comfortable seating and sofas, as well as luxuriant greenery. Flaviano Capriotti Architetti’s flawless concept and execution at the Park Hyatt Milano is a fitting love letter to a city that the architect so obviously adores.

THE SUBTLE ART OF SUBTIL

Passion is a word that is often overused. In a beautiful boutique wine shop and delicatessen in Elviria, however, a stylish young Belgian is using his passion to create something unique on the coast’s gastronomic scene.

Subtil Wine Bar & Artisanal Products is the passion project of young gastronome, Gaetan Vervaeke. The stylish location, with wine bottles arranged on the walls as well in a glass bodega, and tempting pastries and fresh local produce – including some impressively “Huevo de Toro” tomatoes, is testimony to both his passion for natural wines and local, seasonal produce.

Born in Belgium to a family that has a passion for the finer things in life, especially when it comes to food, Gaetan’s inspiration and love for gastronomy started early; his mother was a great chef while his father had a superb knowledge of wines and food, so he had an excellent education.

“Father took both myself and my sister to restaurants where good quality was very much in evidence, especially when it came to produce, and we always enjoyed fantastic food at home,” he explains.

The family moved to Spain when Gaetan was a child, but in his midtwenties, a move to Geneva gave him the opportunity to continue his gastronomic journey. “My time in Switzerland underlined and reinforced my belief in the values of transparency and authenticity, both in wine and gastronomy, as well as in life in general”.

Returning to the coast, Gaetan discovered an opportunity “When I came back to Marbella, I saw that there was a need for a distributor that offered something genuine and different, and so I founded Just Naturally Wine, specialising in natural, authentic and additive free products that

you cannot find in mainstream supermarkets or wine shops. “I started to distribute wines and advise restaurants – something that I enjoy immensely as it allows me to build real relationships with people. I soon realised that I needed to create a space where I could share my passion, showcase the very best produce, and offer a personal experience for those who wanted to learn, explore and expand their knowledge”, he smiles.

Subtil Wine Bar & Artisanal Products opened in 2022, embracing both a passion for natural wines and authentic gastronomy, as well as local and artisan products. “Subtil, for me, is based on elegant details to deliver excellence. It has become an essential for those who value quality and respect for the environment. This is how the Boutique Delicatessen was born, with the aim of promoting traditional cuisine through fresh, local, and seasonal products. Although this concept is prevalent in cities like Paris and Barcelona, at Subtil we have always adhered to this philosophy, making a genuine commitment to providing high-quality local cuisine.” Gaetan works directly with local farmers and artisan food producers in the area, visiting them regularly. “It’s important for me to have a good relationship with them as this establishes confidence. And that means that when you visit Subtil, you feel that you are a guest in my house”, he smiles.

AUGMENTED INTELLIGENCE

FOR TREATING HEART DISEASE AND A HOST OF ILLNESSES

New computer technology offers the prospect of more personalised treatment and prevention programmes for heart disease. Researchers have developed a powerful new risk assessment tool for predicting outcomes in individuals with heart failure, which is just one of many new tools changing the practice of medicine. The new tool for heart failure harnesses the power of machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) to determine patient-specific risks of developing unfavourable outcomes. Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to pump enough blood for the body’s needs. This can lead to fatigue, weakness, swollen legs and feet and, ultimately, death. Heart failure is a progressive condition, so it is extremely important to be able to identify patients at risk of adverse outcomes. Furthermore, heart failure is a growing problem. More than six million Americans already have heart failure, and that number is expected to increase to more than eight million by 2030.

Researchers at the University of Virginia have developed a model called CARNA to improve care, using data drawn from thousands of patients enrolled in heart failure clinical trials. It was able to outperform existing predictors for determining how a broad spectrum of patients would fare in areas such as the need for heart surgery or transplant, and the risk of death. “This model presents a breakthrough because it ingests complex sets of data and can make decisions even among missing and conflicting factors,” said researcher Josephine Lamp with UVA’s School of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science. “It is really exciting because the model intelligently presents and summarises risk factors, reducing the decision burden so clinicians can quickly make treatment decisions.”

By using the model, the researchers hope that doctors will be better equipped to personalise care to individual patients, helping them live longer, healthier lives. The team has made the tool publicly available to clinicians for free.

Augmented Intelligence May Greatly Enhance Breast Cancer Detection

It is not just heart disease being treated in a new way, but also many types of cancer, including breast cancer. Beilinson Hospital in Israel recently completed a pilot program utilising AI technology to review more than 15,000 mammography scans. The technology identified previously undetected tumours, significantly enhanced diagnostic capabilities, and greatly increased the chances for early detection of breast cancer in women 40 and older. It also helped in the development of informed screening plans for women at risk of developing breast cancer.

“By utilising tools like artificial intelligence to aid radiologists in these scans, we are able to increase the reliability of the scans and the cases of early detection, thus saving lives,” said Dr. Ahuva Grubstein, Head of

Beilinson’s Mammography Department.

This program is widely available and approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In addition to be able to benchmark a woman’s level of risk of developing a cancerous tumour, the program’s ability to “see” through dense tissue increases the chances of early detection. Similar programs are being developed for detecting prostate cancer amongst others.

Augmented Intelligence May Greatly Benefit Those with Mental Health Issues

AI may also help speed up diagnoses in the mental health arena, according to Andy Beam, assistant professor of epidemiology and deputy at Harvard University. “A person with type-one bipolar disorder is on average undiagnosed for seven years. That can be a very rocky seven-year period. It can manifest to the person’s family as something like substance abuse, and there’s no clear indication of what’s going on.”

Access to AI may lead to a quicker diagnosis and improve the quality of the life for an individual with this condition. Beam said one of his top concerns about the use of AI in healthcare is misinformation, and he is working with other experts in this field to ensure that AI is used safely and responsibly in healthcare.

For Beam, the best-case scenario for AI in healthcare would be that eventually it operates in the background “so that my life and my interactions with the healthcare system are more seamless, they’re quicker, they’re cheaper, and they’re better,” said Beam.

AGE IS JUST A STATE OF MIND

Take a moment to think about this this question. What percentage of people over 90 years of age will get some form of dementia?

If you guessed more than 30% then you are wrong and moreover, showing signs of an ageist attitude. Only 30% of very old people will get dementia, and in the over 65s it is even fewer, at 10%. Thankfully, the majority of older people will not suffer from dementia - which is reassuring! Our views regarding ageing, however, and our perceptions of older people do have a negative influence on our health as we age.

Some studies have shown that a huge 30% of decline in memory over the age of 60 can be attributed to negative attitudes. Assumptions that memory inevitably declines as we get older are not entirely true. Whilst some aspect of memory may deteriorate, such as working memory (the ability to retain information temporarily), semantic memory (the ability to remember facts and concepts) often improves with age.

Studies by Becca Levy and her team from Yale University have shown the strong relationship between negative attitudes in youth and poor outcomes as we age, including increased levels of heart disease, stroke and even obesity. Levy postulates that there are three mechanisms involved, the first being physiological, “People who have taken in more negative attitudes

have higher levels of cortisol” which will contribute to higher blood pressure and heart disease. But psychologically these attitudes also become selffulfilling prophecies affecting how the older person views themselves and their abilities. And finally, it is easy to appreciate that negative attitudes such as “I can’t lift weights because I’m too old” may impact directly on our muscle strength leading to greater muscle weakness compared with someone who feels strength training is feasible, regardless of age.

Having positive attitudes in contrast, builds resilience and self-mastery, meaning that older people remain engaged in things that have health benefits such as socialising and physical activity.

There really is such a thing as a positive ageing mind-set. We all know people for whom age seems no barrier and it is up to us to emulate those people and start fostering a “Can do” attitude to ageing. And that means sooner rather than later.

SUMMER AT CAC MÁLAGA

The CAC Málaga continues to underline its reputation as one of the most influential galleries in Andalusia with its summer exhibitions. Featuring two international artists with wildly different styles, the former food market, rightly recognised as one of the city major cultural hubs, hosts solo exhibitions by L.A. based artist Mario Ayala and Matías Sánchez, a German painter currently living and working in Seville.

Mario Ayala is regarded as a leading figure of the new American painting scene. His exhibition Milagro “Miracle” focuses on the West Coast artist’s ‘lowrider’ aesthetic and his creations surrounding the world of motoring. The exhibition brings together a selection of paintings produced over the last five years, including previously unpublished works. Created through a fusion of artistic and industrial techniques, drawing on a unique combination of influences shaped by his own experience, Ayala extends the Pop tradition to include the imagery of the Mexican-American and Latino communities of Los Angeles. Milagro runs until 2nd August.

La Gloria es Otra Cosa “Glory Is Something Else”, is major exhibition by Matías Sánchez, one of the most outstanding Andalusian painters on the Spanish contemporary art scene and also enjoying wide international recognition.

The show features a wide selection of paintings from the year 2000 to the present day, highlighting his most recent works, which include unpublished large-format pieces. His works, characterised by the use of thick brushstrokes and impasto, make use of irony and caricatured characters to reflect upon the artist’s own environment and invite the viewer to enter into the painter’s personal universe. At the opening of his exhibition, Sánchez commented, “True glory, for an artist, is being able to make art, and to make a living from art, all his life; the rest is smoke and mirrors. Glory is not being famous, or having the red carpet rolled out under one’s feet. I think that the first thing people should be told at art schools is that art is a priesthood and the glory is in the work – and that it doesn’t always turn out well”. La Gloria es Otra Cosa runs until 1st September.

REINVESTMENT EXEMPTION CONDITIONS AFTER THE SALE OF A PRIMARY RESIDENCE IN SPAIN

Are you a tax resident in Spain? If you want to sell your main residence here, there are several taxation issues to consider. The good news is that it is possible to sell your main residence in Spain and to not to pay any tax on the capital gains. There are, however, certain conditions.

Tax exemption for capital gains reinvestment in a new property

The exemption for reinvestment in primary residence allows taxpayers to exclude from taxation the capital gains obtained from the previous sale. This is if the total amount obtained is reinvested in the acquisition or reform of a new primary residence in Spain within a specific period. This exemption is subject to a series of formal and material requirements that are detailed in national and autonomous community legislation, as well as interpreted by case law and administrative decisions.

Legislation and regulation in Spain relating to the conditions of tax exemption for reinvestment of capital gains after the sale of your main residence in Spain

The Spanish legal basis for the tax exemption for reinvestment in habitual residence in Spain is found in Article 38.1 of Law 35/2006, of November 28, on the Spanish Personal Income Tax (IRPF), as well as in the specific regulation on the same tax of the Autonomous Community of Navarre. Both establish that taxpayers can enjoy a tax exemption on capital gains obtained from the sale of their principal residence if they reinvest the total amount obtained in the acquisition or rehabilitation of a new principal residence within a period of two years. If the reinvestment is partial, the exemption is applied proportionally to the amount reinvested.

Implications and limitations relating to the reinvestment exemption after the sale of your principal residence in Spain:

The reinvestment exemption for the sale of a principal residence in Spain only applies if the reinvestment is made within two years after the sale of the initial residence. The exemption is proportional in case of partial reinvestment. Both the property sold and the property acquired must qualify as the taxpayer’s principal residence. The autonomous community regulations may introduce additional specifications, as is the case of Navarra, so it is important to check the applicable legislation in each autonomous community. When selling your house in Spain it is essential to have the advice of a specialised property lawyer who will determine the type of contract to use. This can make all the difference if you later want to apply for the reinvestment exemption. Can non-residents in Spain benefit from the reinvestment exemption?

If you are a non-resident in Spain and you are resident in another European Union country, you will not be able to apply to the reinvestment exemption. Do not hesitate to contact our office or visit our team of lawyers and accountants in Spain for any tax and legal consultation on property sales and purchases in Spain.
