Happy New 2025!
With a new year comes fresh beginnings, and here at H&L HQ we’re buzzing with optimism and creativity for the year ahead (we’re even hoping to set a few new habits and actually stick to them this time too. If that’s top of your agenda, read some tips from our resident health expert, Rachel Garrod (on page 145).
In the world of interiors, we’re off to a strong start and I, for one, am thrilled with Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Mocha Mousse – a colour tone that you will notice featured a great deal in this edition and previous editions of Home & Lifestyle Magazine. A versatile, warm brown that feels fresh and timeless, the colour is a delightful neutral and is a perfect antidote to the cool greys and ‘greige’ tones that have dominated for years. It pairs beautifully with soft pastels and muted neutrals lending a Mediterranean vibe to spaces while also grounding bold, modern designs and bright colours.
Personally, I’ve already incorporated it into my own home: it looks stunning in my family bathroom, harmonising with black slate tiles and natural wooden cabinets. In the living room, it has replaced the decade-old Hague Blue on my walls and has literally transformed the space. It’s warm, comforting and the sunlight dances on its earthy tone, enhancing the natural stone fireplace and complementing the diffused glow from a Danish-design lampshade. I’d never imagined that brown would be my colour of choice and I couldn’t be happier.
Beyond colour, 2025 is brimming with exciting design trends that we’ll be showcasing in all their glory. Organic maximalism, where natural textures and bold patterns coexist, is on the rise and wellness-focused spaces that connect people to nature by prioritising biophilic design, sustainability, and calming aesthetics are big news. See our feature on GC Studio’s latest project as an example of what to expect, and Atlas Group’s trend report (on page 132).
Of course, we’ll also find design inspiration at this year’s most influential interior trade fairs, kicking off with Maison & Objet in Paris. Salone del Mobile in April is the highlight of Milan Design Week and the ultimate destination for cutting-edge furniture and lighting. Closer to home, we’ll be making our way to Madrid in late spring for Casa Decor, a unique showcase that combines heritage, architecture, and design by transforming historic buildings in the capital into curated design spaces. And, in September, Spain’s leading home design exhibition, Feria Hábitat Valencia, will take place – an exhibition that Home & Lifestyle Magazine has regularly sponsored. At Home & Lifestyle Magazine, we’re onboard with all the possibilities that 2025 has to offer and welcome another year filled with inspiration, creativity, and beautiful design.
We hope you enjoy this issue.

MAKING YOUR HOME SHINE BRIGHT
Lighting is no longer just a practical necessity; it’s an essential element of design that can transform the ambiance and aesthetic of a space. From bold pendant lamps to sleek minimalist designs, today’s lighting trends are all about blending style with function. Statement pendant lamps serve as decorative focal points, making an impact with their unique shapes and striking finishes. On the other hand, minimalist pendant lamps, with their clean lines and simple forms, bring sophistication and subtlety, to complement contemporary interiors.
Table lighting, while ideal for tasks like reading, has evolved beyond mere functionality. It creates pockets of warmth and brings a cosy atmosphere to any room. Meanwhile, outdoor lighting has become a key feature in landscaping, offering both beauty and practicality. Thoughtfully placed fixtures highlight the natural appeal of plants and pathways while providing guidance and safety in the dark.
In this article, we explore these lighting trends, showcasing how they bring together form, function, and flair to brighten up modern spaces. Take a look at these illuminating ideas…

THE TRANSFORMATIVE WORLD OF WALLPAPERS
Wallpapers and wallcoverings are a cornerstone of interior design but, today, they are evolving into more than just decorative backdrops. They’re becoming the defining feature of a room. Large panoramic depictions are taking centre stage, creating bold statements that captivate and immerse. It is notable that many of the major wallpaper brands have opted for darker tones in their recent collections, with earthy shades also being very popular. Deep, rich hues instantly evoke profound emotions, and it’s a trend that has been embraced by interior designers who are looking to make a transformative, visual impact in a room. Textured wallcoverings, a growing trend, go one step further by offering a tactile dimension that brings walls to life. Whether it’s through the interplay of light on intricate surfaces or the sheer indulgence of their design, these coverings transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. A high-quality wallcovering elevates a room’s décor, adding a layer of sophistication and luxury. So, adorn your walls this winter and discover how wallpapers and wallcoverings are reshaping the way we think about, and interact with, our living spaces.

CREATING A LIVING ROOM THAT YOU WILL LOVE
Creating a luxurious living room is about striking the perfect balance between visual appeal and an inviting atmosphere that feels cohesive and serene. Incorporating natural materials enhances the room’s soothing qualities, offering a tactile and organic feel. While neutral tones have dominated contemporary Mediterranean interiors in recent years, deep, rich hues are making a bold comeback. These colours imbue your space with a moody, enticing charm that beckons you to unwind. Or a thoughtfully placed pop of colour - in the form of a vibrant armchair, pouf or rug - acts as a striking focal point, bringing energy and character to the room.
Sculptural pieces of furniture such as a unique daybed, ottoman or armchair also add interest. An oversized pendant lamp or chandelier will provide the wow-factor and, for smaller spaces, arched floor lamps will do the trick.
Modular sofas are a perfect addition for versatility and style, allowing you to adapt the seating arrangement to suit any occasion. Even though coffee tables are a staple for any living room, the often overlooked side table can elevate your lounging experience, seamlessly combining practicality with elegance.

GROUNDED SOPHISTICATION
In the world of interior design, rugs are more than just accessories. They can literally shape a room’s character and ambiance. The latest trends in rug design combine bold patterns, luxurious fibres, and innovative textures, creating pieces that are both functional and artistic.
Rugs with striking, bold patterns make a strong impression, crafted from opulent materials like silk, wool, and viscose. These designs provide depth and visual intrigue, turning floors into canvases. Whether geometric, abstract, or natureinspired, the patterns inject personality and energy into a space.
Three-dimensional, high-pile rugs redefine comfort, especially over the winter period. Their rich, tactile surfaces invite touch and radiate warmth, making them ideal for cosy corners and intimate living spaces. These rugs add a sculptural dimension to interiors, blurring the line between utility and art.
A statement rug is more than a finishing touch; it is a room’s anchor. Eye-catching designs can set the tone for an entire interior, offering the perfect foundation to build around. Whether in vibrant colours or subtle monochromes, these rugs provide the visual focus a space needs to feel complete.
For those who prefer understated elegance, rugs in neutral, earthy tones offer a timeless charm. These hues, inspired by nature, blend seamlessly into a variety of aesthetics, from rustic to modern minimalism. They provide a grounded warmth that makes any living space feel inviting and harmonious.
Selecting the right rug isn’t just about filling a space; it’s about elevating it. Whether bold or subdued, tactile or sleek, today’s rug designs are essential tools for creating interiors that feel as beautiful as they look.

WORKING AT HOME IN STYLE
Creating a home office isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about crafting an environment that enhances your productivity and overall well-being. When your workspace is thoughtfully designed, it can significantly influence how you think, feel, and work. A well-organised, inviting office space boosts your motivation, sparks creativity, minimises stress, and helps you stay focused. The right blend of comfort, elegance, and functionality can make all the difference in transforming a mundane workspace into a productivity powerhouse. One key aspect of an efficient workspace is having a desk with ample storage, allowing you to keep your essentials organised and within reach. This reduces clutter and helps maintain a streamlined environment, which can reduce stress and improve concentration. Additionally, investing in a comfortable chair, ideally one that swivels, tilts, and adjusts in height, is crucial for promoting good posture. A chair that supports movement allows you to adapt to different tasks throughout the day, creating a more relaxed and dynamic work atmosphere. CREATING HARMONY THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN
VILLA EL HERROJO
Villa El Herrojo is a residential project by GC Studio, the celebrated architecture and interior design firm by Alexis González and Lucía Casaus.
The studio’s values are rooted in crafting beautiful spaces that blend timeless design with practical living, whilst connecting to the natural surroundings.
Perched in the hills of Benahavís with the most glorious views of the Med, Villa El Herrojo is a stunning example of GC Studio’s signature style.
Open and fluid in its design, the newly-built villa epitomises modern Mediterranean living at its finest, seamlessly connecting the interior space with the natural beauty of outdoors. Expansive, light-filled living areas
foster social connection while providing moments of personal retreat. Large windows frame picturesque views and allow natural light to flood the home.
A thoughtful palette of organic materials like natural wood, stone, and woven fibres creates a visually-stunning, natural interior that adds texture and a sense of calm and understated luxury to the space.
“We wanted to balance the decor and materials used with the architectural style to fully encapsulate a sophisticated Mediterranean lifestyle. It was important to make the most of the outdoor spaces and create a sense of visual harmony,” the duo explains.
And they have achieved just that. At the core of the eight-bedroom villa, the interconnected living and dining areas are anchored by a state-ofthe-art kitchen with a central island. The master bedroom is a private retreat with its own secluded terrace capturing sweeping views of the surrounding landscape. Outdoors, the expansive spaces are a celebration of Mediterranean living. Landscaped gardens frame a striking pool, while chill-out areas and a superb alfresco kitchen are perfect social spaces for relaxing in the sun or dining under the stars. The property also includes a gym, a private cinema, and a luxurious spa featuring an indoor pool and sauna.
Villa El Herrojo is testament to GC Studio’s ability to transform architectural ambition into a home that embodies the art of living. It’s a shining example of modern luxury in Mediterranean design.

WHERE SIZE MATTERS
INTERVIEW WITH MARCEL KLUIJTMANS, FOUNDER OF DE TROPEN OUTDOOR FURNITURE
De Tropen Outdoor Furniture is a premier destination for homeowners across the Costa del Sol. Why should customers from Marbella consider travelling to Vélez-Málaga for their outdoor furniture needs?
I believe the complete experience we offer sets us apart. Our showroom is one of the largest on the Costa del Sol and we carry a huge selection of outdoor furniture, all available for immediate delivery. There’s absolutely no waiting time for your furniture to arrive – everything is ready to go. That’s worth the short drive alone.
We stock an impressive range of outdoor collections from worldrenowned brands such as Hartman, Talenti, 4 Seasons Outdoor, Vondom, and Glatz. We offer expert advice to help you make the right choices for your outdoor living spaces.
So, we provide high-quality brands and immediate delivery which is why so many Marbella homeowners are choosing to buy from us instead of other local retailers.
De Tropen also stocks a great range of products and accessories for outdoor living. What would you consider a must-have for spring/summer 2025?
The Alfa pizza oven is a gamechanger for alfresco dining. There’s nothing like enjoying freshly-baked pizza in your own garden or terrace so it’s a must-
have for the upcoming season. We also have a range of complementary products to enhance your outdoor space from complete outdoor kitchens and BBQs, to outdoor heaters, solar lighting, and parasols. Our bio-climatic aluminium pergolas have been very popular and allow you to adjust the amount of sunlight and shade, so they are extremely versatile. We aim to offer products that cater to the every need a homeowner in southern Spain may require for luxury living.
De Tropen’s showroom spans an impressive 13,000 m2. What do you feel is so significant about having one of the largest showrooms on the Costa del Sol?
The sheer size of our showroom allows us to showcase a wide variety of products, design styles and materials all in one place. Whether you’re looking for contemporary, classic, or Mediterranean-inspired furniture and accessories, our vast displays help customers visualise their outdoor living areas and to see how different pieces work together, ensuring they make the best decision for their home.
We offer a relaxed shopping experience, where you can take your time, sip on a free espresso or cappuccino, and enjoy a stress-free environment. With easy access from the A-7 and a spacious private car park, the showroom is convenient for clients from Málaga, Marbella, and beyond.
You work with many high-profile outdoor brands. Are there any particular designers or collections you’re most proud to feature in the De Tropen showroom?
We’re proud to feature collections from industry leaders such as Hartman, Talenti, and 4 Seasons Outdoor, known for their innovation and commitment to both style and durability. The parasols by Glatz look great, are built to withstand strong winds, and offer excellent UV protection in a range of stylish colours and sizes to fit any outdoor space. Likewise, Hartman products are incredibly versatile, offering highquality, weather-resistant materials like powder-coated aluminium and Sunbrella textiles that can withstand even the harshest conditions. They look great and will last for years to come.
One of the standout collections is from 4 Seasons Outdoor, a Dutch brand that perfectly combines luxury and functionality. The furniture is sleek, modern, and extremely comfortable. We love offering our clients the chance to experience Dutch design at its finest.

ROOTED IN NATURE
INTERVIEW WITH ROMINA PEREYRA, SYBARTUM
Sybartum has built up a name for retailing a huge range of furniture made from natural materials. Why did you choose this concept for your showroom? At Sybartum, we believe that furniture should serve a functional purpose and also evoke a sense of connection to nature and well-being. Natural materials like wood, rattan, and stone bring warmth and authenticity to a home, creating spaces that feel grounded and timeless. When we started, we saw a clear demand for sustainable, high-quality furniture that resonated with the lifestyle and aesthetic preferences of our customers, particularly here on the Costa del Sol where the natural beauty of the region inspires interior design choices.
The trend for wooden furniture has exponentially increased over the last few years. What sets you apart from other showrooms selling similar products on the Costa del Sol?
We pride ourselves on curating a truly unique collection that blends craftsmanship, sustainability, and versatility. Unlike many showrooms, Sybartum offers a diverse selection that caters to a wide spectrum of styles, from minimalist Scandinavian designs to rustic Mediterranean pieces.
Additionally, we focus heavily on customisation, allowing clients to create bespoke items that perfectly fit their space and vision. Sustainability is a growing concern for many customers. How does your showroom address this?
Sustainability is at the heart of what we do. We carefully source materials from suppliers who prioritise ethical practices, such as responsible forestry and low-impact production methods. Many of our products are crafted from reclaimed or FSC-certified wood, and we’re continuously exploring innovative materials that align with eco-friendly principles. Beyond the products, we aim to reduce our overall carbon footprint by optimising logistics, using sustainable packaging, and educating our customers about long-lasting, timeless design to encourage thoughtful consumption.
What values and principles define Sybartum as a brand?
We’re guided by a few core principles: quality, authenticity, and customer connection. We believe in offering furniture that stands the test of time, both in durability and design. Authenticity is reflected in our use of natural materials and partnerships with artisans who share our vision. Lastly, our customers are at the heart of every decision we make. We aim to create a shopping experience that feels personal, inspiring, and empowering, helping each client bring their dream space to life.

ATLAS GROUP
LUXURY CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION TRENDS
FOR 2025
Construction is constantly evolving, and 2025 promises further innovations driven by sustainability and technology with a focus on wellness too. As developers and homeowners on the Costa del Sol are largely seeking more refined and eco-conscious solutions, the construction industry is setting new standards for comfort and efficiency, with a nod to style. As a market leader, construction company Atlas Group details the key trends shaping the future of high-end properties.
1. Sustainability as a Cornerstone Eco-conscious construction practices are becoming a defining feature of luxury properties. Here at Atlas Group, we are embracing green principles such as waste reduction, carbon-neutral materials, and energy-efficient building systems. Modular construction methods, which minimise waste while speeding up timelines, are also gaining prominence for their efficiency and precision. Additionally, sustainable certifications like BREEAM are becoming coveted badges of honour for developers, showcasing their commitment to creating environmentally responsible luxury properties. BREEAM is the most technically advanced method for assessing and certifying building sustainability. A property with a BREEAM certificate will give the owner confidence in a sustainable home for now long into the future. Vista Lago Residences in the mountain-side location of Real de la Quinta has achieved this accolade. Atlas Group are building several of the luxury villas in this ambitious project.
2. Ultra Energy-Efficient Homes
As energy costs rise and climate concerns grow, the demand for ultraefficient homes is accelerating. Features such as advanced insulation, triple-glazed windows, and smart ventilation systems are becoming staples in luxury properties. Net-zero energy homes, equipped with renewable energy systems like solar panels and geothermal heating, are now the norm.
Retrofitting older properties is also a significant trend, with homeowners investing in modern energy solutions to improve efficiency while retaining the character and charm of traditional designs.
3. Smart Technology for a Seamless Lifestyle
Technology continues to redefine the luxury property experience. Smart home systems are integrating voice-controlled assistants, app-controlled lighting, and high-tech security systems, delivering unparalleled optimise. Automation platforms enable homeowners to monitor and optimize
energy usage while tailoring environments to their preferences, from climate control to ambient lighting. For luxury properties, this seamless integration extends to entertainment spaces, including home theatres and multi-room audio systems, enhancing the experience of everyday living and entertaining. Technology will continue to evolve into 2025, with home automation remaining in high demand.
4. Biophilic and Nature-Inspired Design
Nature-inspired design principles are redefining luxury interiors, emphasising wellness and connection to the natural world. Properties are incorporating features like indoor gardens, green walls, and water elements, bringing tranquillity and elegance into the home.
Biophilic design also emphasises natural materials such as reclaimed wood, stone, and linen, paired with large windows and open layouts to flood interiors with natural light. These elements create a calming environment that feels both luxurious and sustainable. Casa Jaguar is a prime example of a nature-inspired home. This multi-million euro villa on a hillside in El Madroñal has a green roof, sustainable watering features and plants
suitable for the dry Andalucían summers, therefore limiting the prolific use of water and intense care to keep them alive.
5. Designing for Wellness
Wellness will remain a top priority in luxury builds, shaping everything from architecture to interior design features, spa-inspired bathrooms, meditation spaces, and air purification systems cater to the growing demand for health-focused environments. Properties are also incorporating circadian lighting systems and soundproofing technologies to promote better sleep and overall well-being. Home saunas, cold plunge pools and aromatherapy rooms, are also moving inside the home while outdoor spaces are offering serene landscapes, infinity pools, and al fresco dining areas that connect luxury living with nature. Trends for 2025 set the stage for properties that are as forward-thinking as they are opulent. As the industry continues to innovate, the future of construction and renovation promises to be both exciting and transformative.

CARLOTA CIGANDA WINS THE SPANISH OPEN
A GRIPPING FINALE IN REAL GUADALHORCE
Spanish golf superstar Carlota Ciganda delivered an outstanding performance at the recent Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España, held at Málaga’s Real Guadalhorce Club de Golf. It’s the second time she’s claimed the title after her victory in 2021 and also marks her eighth career title on the Ladies European Tour (LET). With a final score of -18, Ciganda edged out Belgium’s Manon De Roey (-17) in a gripping duel, with India’s Pranavi Urs (-14) finishing third.
But her victory was anything but straightforward. Starting the day with a four-shot lead, she faced a shaky opening with bogeys on the 1st and 3rd holes, allowing De Roey to level the score. However, Ciganda’s poise under pressure brought Birdies on the 5th and 7th holes to restore her lead. The
turning point came on the par-3 17th, where she drained a four-metre birdie putt, sending the crowd into rapturous applause. Despite a bogey on the finishing hole, her win was sealed, cementing her legacy in Spanish women’s golf.
“It’s incredibly special to win here in Spain,” she said after her victory.
“The Open de España has always been a unique tournament for me, and winning it for a second time is a dream come true.”
Among the other standout stories of the tournament were amateur players Andrea Revuelta from Madrid who came in fifth-place at -12, and Carla Bernat’s 14th place at -8. Málaga’s Ana Peláez finished in 11th-place, highlighting the strength of the future of Spanish women’s golf.
POWERFUL PERFORMANCE
MCLAREN 750S A
When McLaren launched the 720S supercar in 2017, car enthusiasts sat up and took notice. With its twin-turbo V8 roar, unmistakable “eye socket” headlights, and airbrake - it claimed its place among automotive royalty.
Now, its successor, the McLaren 750S, adds a new chapter to the McLaren story, having just been awarded the title of Performance Car of the Year by Top Gear, the UK’s best-selling car magazine.
The 750S earned its stripes at Top Gear’s Speed Week, tested to its limits on the Navarra Circuit and the winding roads of Pamplona. Judges praised its raw power, agility, and seamless connection between driver and machine.
The verdict? The 750S “engages your senses” like few cars can, combining acceleration with unparalleled precision and control.
The McLaren 750S may excel as a performance car by combining cuttingedge engineering with driver-centric design, yet it retains the essence of
what made the 720S a game-changer. Only a third of its components are new and, at a glance, you’d be forgiven for mistaking it for its predecessor. It looks the same, all sleek and futuristic - it’s light - to suit McLaren’s obsession with weight, and it’s fast.
With its twin-turbocharged 4.0 litre V8 engine, the 750S delivers acceleration that pushes the boundaries of performance. Capable of sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds, it’s among the quickest production cars in the world. Its top speed of more than 200 mph showcases the engineering prowess for which McLaren is known, but its lightweight construction and advanced aerodynamics keep the car stable and composed even at its limits.
The 720S may have rested its crown but the 750S proves that legends never truly retire; they just get better and evolve.

CHEF HELLE OF CHILI GOURMET CATERING RECREATES
A WARMING CRAB AND SHRIMP BISQUE
Serves four
Ingredients:
2 large crabs (uncooked)
16 Gambon shrimps (raw)
2 garlic cloves
3 shallots (sliced)
A generous splash of brandy
300 ml white wine
200 ml full cream
200 ml crème fraiche
Heaped tablespoon butter
One tablespoon tomato paste
Extra Virgin olive oil
2 bay leaves
4 star anis
1/2 fresh chilli
1 dried chilli
1 lime
Salt and pepper to taste
Fresh dill and pea sprouts to garnish
This exquisite crab and Gambon shrimp bisque is a real crowd pleaser and will undoubtedly be the talk of your dinner party. Even better, it’s easy to make and doesn’t involve hours of cooking time. Rich, creamy and warming, it wouldn’t look out of place in a fine dining restaurant either. That’s a winwin all round.
1 Place bay leaves, one dried chilli, and a tablespoon of salt in a medium sized pot with enough water to cover the ingredients and seafood, and bring to the boil. Cook the crab for approximately 18 minutes and add the Gambon shrimps for the lastone and a half minutes. Save the liquid for later.
2 Peel the Gambon shrimps and leave to one side. Turn the cooked crab upside down, remove the claws and cut open to remove the meat. Place in a bowl and mix with a touch of olive oil, a squeeze of lime juice, salt and pepper, chopped dill and fresh chilli.
3 Separate the crab by pushing the head out of the shell. The only thing you don’t want in your bisque is the gills from the head, known by chefs as “the dead man’s finger”. Remove this and discard.
4 Cut the head, the big shell and the smaller crab legs into pieces and fry in a super-hot pan with butter, garlic, shallots, fresh dill and star anis until caramelised. Then add a spoon of tomato paste, a good shot of brandy and burn off the alcohol. Add your favourite white wine and some of the saved water and reduce down to a 1/4 of the liquid. Add cream and season to taste. Cook for a few more minutes and filter through a strain.
5 Plate the Gambon shrimps and half of the crabmeat mix in the middle of a
soup plate. Pour in the hot bisque followed by a generous spoonful of crème fraiche, a slice of lime, fresh herbs and freshly ground pepper to taste.
6 To serve, place the remaining crabmeat mix in the open crab leg and top with drops of crème fraiche, pea sprouts and dill. Serve the crab leg on top of the soup plate to impress your guests. Serve with slices of your favourite bread. We always like to add our personal touch with our signature chilli. Using other shellfish, king crab or lobster here works as well as the shrimp and adds a personal touch to the bisque too.

NATURAL WINES TO FALL IN LOVE WITH
BY GAËTAN VERVAEKE, SUBTIL WINE BAR
Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love, and whether you’re celebrating it with a romantic dinner for two, a cosy night at home, or a fun evening with friends, choosing a wine that reflects the passion behind its creation can elevate the experience. Here are our suggestions of natural wines that will make a memorable Valentine’s Day.
For a Romantic Meal
If you’re planning a candlelit dinner, Rozeta by Maxim Magnon is a natural wine, crafted with the refinement of Burgundy-style winemaking, and combines softness with elegance. It pairs perfectly with our aged beef carpaccio from the renowned “El Capricho” farm by José Gordón (Castilla y León). A natural Bobal or Garnacha enhances the intense flavours of steak tartare and our selection of Iberian and ox charcuterie, while a pure Chardonnay from the Chablis region (France) is the perfect match for our Fine de Claire No3 oysters. For smoked mackerel, an irresistible blend of Xarel·lo and Macabeo, unfiltered and free from chemicals, adds freshness and delicacy while respecting the pure flavours of the products. And, in our opinion, no dessert is complete without a dessert wine. We highly recommend Georgina 2021, a sweet, natural wine made by Mas Gomà Winery in the Penedès region. For something special, our Orange Wine featuring Malvasía and Moscatel de Alejandría grapes, offers balanced sweetness and vibrant acidity, and is perfect for pairing with sorbet or a scoop of artisan ice cream from the French family-owned La Fabrique Givrée.
For a Cosy Night In
For an indulgent night at home, a natural sparkling wine can add a touch of magic. We offer an exclusive and very limited selection of Champagnes
naturels that bring elegance to even the simplest of evenings. For a light option, try a Pet-Nat crafted using the ancestral method or a Cava Reserva Brut Nature. For something playful, the Sparkling LOVE Léoube from Côtes de Provence, with its festive tone and delicate bubbles, pairs wonderfully with fresh produce such as our organic tomato salad featuring the “huevo de toro” variety from the Hevilla family’s organic farm in Coín (Málaga).
For a Special Gift
Look no further than a Champagne by Emilien Feneuil or a natural Cava from Catalonia or Valencia, paired with an artisanal “bean-tobar” chocolate bar by the Puchero family - three-time winners at the International Chocolate Awards. For lovers of full-bodied reds, Gran Fausto 5o Año by winemaker Alfredo Maestro is an exceptional Tinta Fina from Valladolid with five years of aging in French oak barrels and an extremely limited production. A refined and character-filled gift.
For a personal touch, a personalised glass from the prestigious Josephine Hütte house is an exceptional detail that turns every sip into a unique experience, or Subtil Wine Bar offers an exclusive, personalised natural wine tasting, designed to explore the finest nuances of authentic wines, all paired with the perfect bites. Visit our Instagram to discover more about our special Valentine’s Day events and make the night unforgettable.

THE SCIENCE OF HABITS
BY RACHEL GARROD
A new year is the best time to take a moment and reflect on old habits we would like to change or new ones we wish to embrace. Habits can be thought of as things we perform routinely and automatically. For most people, something as simple as putting on shoes before going outside, cleaning your teeth, or drinking a morning coffee may be such rooted habits that to not do them will feel uncomfortable or even unpleasant. However, the formation of habits depends on many things such as how habitual we are as a person, the complexity of the task, the frequency of repetition, and environmental enablers. They consist of a “cue” or trigger and identifying these can help us break unwanted habits. Many smokers, for example, view the first morning coffee as an automatic trigger to light a cigarette. After the cue, the ritual is performed and we receive a “reward”. There is always some kind of reward associated with automatic habits, even if the reward is complex and associated with negative feelings.
Our environment also plays a large part in habit formation. Research proves that when someone sees stairs before they see a lift, they are more likely to take the stairs. If encountering stairs is an everyday occurrence, the habit of walking the stairs instead of using the lift becomes easily reinforced. Repetition and reward are essential to creating habits. Let’s say you want
a daily walk to become a new habit in 2025. To engrain this in the neural pathways and make this activity habitual, it will help if you walk at the same time every day. For this to happen, you may have to “restructure your environment” and place your walking shoes by your bed so they are easily available. Putting the shoes on becomes your “cue” and, by identifying the positive rewards you get from this new habit, you are more likely to keep it up. There are many studies into how long it takes to form new habits and, whilst we used to think 30 days was long enough, we now know that for most habits, an average of 66 days of regular performance is needed to make a behaviour habitual. That’s around 10 weeks of daily walks before it becomes a habit.
What is so positive about the research around habits is that we know that anyone can learn new habits, regardless of age, and that, over time, we can break neuronal connections of one habit and re-programme the brain to form new and hopefully better ones.
If you want help learning new habits or breaking unwanted old ones, please get in touch with Rachel Garrod at Better Breathing Physio.

RELIEF IN REACH
WEARABLE TENS DEVICE MAY HELP WITH LONG COVID
MEDICAL MINUTES BY JOHN SCHIESZER
Adults grappling with the debilitating pain and fatigue of Long COVID may find relief in a simple, wearable device. Researchers at UCLA, in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, have discovered that a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) system, which delivers low-voltage electrical currents to ease pain, could be a game-changer for improving mobility and reducing fatigue.
Long COVID is a complex condition that continues to affect millions worldwide after recovering from the acute phase of COVID-19. Characterised by persistent symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, joint pain, and cognitive issues, it significantly impacts daily life disrupting the ability to work, exercise, walk, and perform basic tasks.
“While this study focused on managing pain and fatigue caused by long COVID, its implications may extend to other conditions involving chronic fatigue and pain, such as fibromyalgia or post-hospitalisation weakness,” noted Dr. Bijan Najafi, research director at UCLA Health’s Centre for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology. In the study, 25 participants with musculoskeletal pain and fatigue were assigned either an active high-
dose TENS device or a placebo device. Participants used the device for three to five hours daily over a four-week period, with researchers measuring pain levels, fatigue, and walking ability.
Results showed significant benefits for the high-dose group, including a 26.1% greater reduction in pain and an 8% improvement in walking speed. One factor in the study’s success was likely the wearable nature of the TENS device allowing participants to use it seamlessly throughout the day without disrupting their routines.
“This wearable TENS system offered immediate, on-demand relief from pain and fatigue, making it easy to integrate into daily activities,” said Dr. Najafi. And, while the findings offer hope, Dr Najafi also stressed the need for larger studies. However, for non-invasive, accessible relief, the study is a promising step forward in managing the lingering effects of Long COVID.

A GUIDE TO BUYING PROPERTY IN SPAIN
ARTICLE SUPPLIED BY WELEX LAWYERS & ACCOUNTANTS
As specialists in real estate law, we understand that buying property in Spain is a significant decision. Our guide to five of the most important things to consider when on the hunt for a property in Spain will help you to navigate the legalities and costs involved.
1. What is a “Nota Simple,” and why is it important?
The Nota Simple provides detailed information about the legal status of a property, issued by the land registry. Before signing any contract, a specialised lawyer can review the Nota Simple to ensure the property is free from legal issues.
2. What do I need to do before the purchase?
The process involves several legal and administrative steps including a property review, opening a bank account, obtaining a Spanish tax number (NIE), and contracting utility companies.
3. What is the three per cent withholding tax when buying from a non-resident?
If the seller is not a tax resident in Spain, the buyer is legally obligated to withhold three per cent of the purchase price and pay it to the tax agency, to ensure the seller fulfils their tax obligations related to the transaction.
4. Assessing the fixed costs of the property
It is essential to know the recurring expenses associated with the property, including community fees, IBI (property tax), and utility bills. They should be included in your overall budget.
5. Obligations to the community of owners
In Spain, you assume responsibilities related to the community of owners including contributing to common expenses, maintaining your property in good condition, and allowing repairs that affect the overall building so it is important to review the financial status of the community before purchasing. Purchasing property in Spain involves various important legal and practical aspects. At Welex, we provide a comprehensive service, from the legal review to the management of taxes and administrative procedures. If you are considering buying in Spain, get in touch to find out how we can help keep you on the right track.
