EDITOR’S

“Autumn is the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” – John Keats. “And somewhere to finally park the car” – Costa del Sol Resident.

When September arrives, the coast breathes a collective sigh of relief. It may have been a summer season that broke all records in terms of tourists, hotel occupancy and increased spend per visitor, but this resulted in day-to-day life being a little more “challenging” than usual, especially if you were stuck in yet another traffic delay.

September is the favourite month of many of us who live here all year round. The slight drop in temperature means that we can enjoy our pools, gardens and terraces without the harsh summer heat.

That gradual change of seasons, as summer slips effortlessly into autumn, presents the perfect excuse to plan for cooler weather ahead. As those who have older properties will confirm, it does get cold in Spain in the autumn and winter months, especially if you have old style marble floors and high ceilings. In the 70s and 80s, constructors apparently suffered a collective mass amnesia, forgetting that Spain has a winter…

The great news, however, is that autumn is all about warm hues, calming tones, as well as cosy textures and fabrics. It is a time to consider curtains and rugs, and to restyle and reimagine your living spaces. There is no better feeling than lighting the first wood fire of the season in a cosy living room that you have ‘autumnally adapted’.

Autumn is also the perfect time to get inspired and discover new ideas and trends. Highlights of the design fair season include Maison & Objet in Paris (5-9th September) Decorex in London (6th-9th October), Design Week Málaga (21st-27th October), as well as Spain’s most important and influential industry event, Feria Hábitat València (30th September-3rd October) where once again, Home & Lifestyle Magazine is proud to be a sponsor.

Enjoy the autumn!

PARADISE OUTDOORS

As the searing temperatures of summer finally ease, the arrival of autumn allows us to enjoy our outdoor areas more comfortably. For some this is their favourite time of the whole year.

Leading designers have reimagined outdoor spaces as alfresco sanctuaries for relaxation and entertainment. Each new collection presents trends that constantly evolve to enhance both comfort and style. Among these, the Balearic boho design ethic has gained immense popularity, blending bohemian aesthetics with Mediterranean influences. This trend embraces earthy tones for upholstery, creating a warm and inviting ambiance.

Casual lounging is a key feature, with large seats adorned with plush cushions on chairs and sofas, ensuring comfort and a laid-back aesthetic. Sunbeds combine the aforementioned comfort with seamless style for those looking to bask in the sun. For a sleek and modern look, minimalist sun loungers bring streamlined, cutting-edge trends to any outside space, while large chunky sun loungers provide a more sumptuous and welcoming feel.

Sophisticated shade solutions are integral to outdoor living. Ease of operation and the ability to adapt to the sun’s changing position throughout the day are hugely important. The perfect shade solution should offer relief from the heat while adding an element of elegance to the space. Dining alfresco is a quintessential aspect of outdoor living, making well-designed dining areas crucial. Whether for intimate family meals or lively gatherings, these spaces are crafted to enhance the joy of dining outdoors, emphasising both functionality and style.

C’est la Vie is a new collection by Unopiù. Offering timeless refinement and elegant style, the collection uses highquality materials such as polished mahogany, similar to that found in sophisticated English furniture or on graceful classic-style ships. ELEVATING YOUR LIVING ROOM WITH TIMELESS DESIGN

When it comes to creating the perfect living room, it’s all about finding that harmonious balance between form, function, and personal flair. A key element in achieving this lies in the craftsmanship of your furniture - sofas and armchairs made with attention to detail can make all the difference. Well-built pieces not only elevate the aesthetic, but also offer long-lasting comfort and durability. Carefully considered layouts are another crucial factor, ensuring the room flows naturally, allowing for easy movement without sacrificing style. Incorporating your own personality into the design helps your space feel like home, but it’s important to avoid over-cluttering. A clean, thoughtful arrangement allows the room to breathe, giving each element a moment to shine. One trend that continues to stand out is the use of earthy, muted tones. Soft browns, creams and beiges have become go-to choices for those looking to create a soothing, inviting environment in which to relax. These tones help set the stage for a calming retreat - a space to unwind and recharge after a long day. With the right blend of craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and serene colours, your living room can truly become a haven in which to relax.

WALLS THAT SPEAK YOUR LANGUAGE

Wallpapers and wallcoverings have become a powerful design tool for transforming spaces; with relatively little effort, they offer endless possibilities for both personalisation and creativity. Whether through bold patterns, soft textures, or intricate designs, wallpapers can set the tone of a room, creating an ambiance that reflects your style and personality. They can make small spaces feel larger, add warmth to otherwise plain walls, or serve as a striking focal point when used for accent walls. As well as this, the creative use of wallpapers can enhance the overall mood of a space, with options ranging from energising, vibrant colours to soothing, muted tones, making them a versatile choice for elevating the aesthetic and feel of any living area.

Depictions of nature, especially designs featuring leaves and botanical elements, are still a popular trend. These nature-inspired motifs bring a calming, serene atmosphere to interior spaces, effortlessly connecting the interior and exterior worlds. Earthy hues, such as warm browns, soft greens, and muted ochres are also highly sought-after, offering a grounded, soothing backdrop that complements various design styles. Recent collections have made use of abstract motifs, with bold, contemporary patterns offering an artistic edge, perfect for creating a vibrant statement wall and adding a modern flair to any room.

While focussing on wallpapers and wallcoverings, it is impossible to gloss over the power of paint. Offering limitless possibilities in colour shades and finishes, paints allow free rein or personalised and creative expression. Paint companies have adapted their products so that they are less labour-intensive to apply and maintain, making it a more efficient choice for homeowners and decorators. Many companies are concentrating on sustainability by developing eco-friendly products, such as low-VOC or zeroVOC paints, which minimise both environmental impact and indoor air pollution. This combination of easy application, vast colour options, and sustainable practices makes paint an increasingly popular choice for modern interiors.

TAKING THE FLOOR IN STYLE

Rugs provide both aesthetic appeal and practical advantages. As the seasons shift, especially into the cooler autumn months, rugs become particularly cherished for the warmth and ambience they bring. Whether you opt for a contemporary minimalist design that blends seamlessly with modern interiors, a vibrant splash of colour to invigorate a room, or a dense pile that exudes luxury and comfort, rugs have the unique ability to transform a space. They provide a sense of homeliness, making a room feel inviting and complete.

Beyond their decorative role, rugs can create a focal point, drawing attention to a particular area, or simply introduce a subtle layer of cosiness that enhances the overall atmosphere. In autumn, when the air grows crisp and the daylight fades earlier, a well-chosen rug not only adds warmth underfoot but also enriches the visual and tactile experience of a room, making it a true sanctuary.

A well-designed kitchen is more than just a functional space; it should harmoniously blend aesthetics, technology, and practicality. Embracing the trend of smooth surfaces and seamless joins, many contemporary kitchen designs focus on creating a streamlined look integrating countertops and cabinets, eliminating visible gaps. Soft neutrals and earthy tones are favoured for their ability to evoke a sense of tranquillity and relaxation, making the kitchen not only a place for culinary creativity but also a sanctuary for unwinding after a long day. THE POWER OF LIGHTING IN CONT EMPORARY DESIGN

Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the ambiance and functionality of any space, serving as both a practical necessity and an integral element of design. In contemporary interiors, the elegance of simplicity is often embraced, where stylish yet understated lighting solutions such as pendant lights offer a refined alternative to the more traditional, but sometimes overwhelming, chandeliers. These pendants, with their clean lines and minimalist designs, strike the perfect balance between modern sophistication and timeless appeal, blending seamlessly with various décor styles to create a casual chic atmosphere. Incorporating elements of tradition into contemporary lighting can effortlessly enhance the allure of a room, infusing it with a subtle glamour that never feels excessive. This thoughtful approach extends to table settings as well, where chic, wellchosen lamps not only elevate the aesthetic of a dining experience but also provide the essential task of illuminating the objects and dishes, adding a layer of depth and warmth to the overall ambiance.

When selecting lighting, careful consideration of your choices will pay off immensely. Even the most economical lamps, when thoughtfully chosen, can transform a space, adding warmth, focus, and style. The key lies in selecting lighting that complements your overall design vision while meeting the practical needs of the room.

DEFIES ALL ODDS WITH SANTORINI-STYLE PROJECT IN THE GULF

Leading Marbella design studio, Originals Interiors had its creative, organisational and logistical talents put to the test for a truly unique project in Abu Dhabi when a client asked the team to present a project that reflected a Santorini style.

Originals founder, Debbie Pea stated, “At first we wondered how that was going to work, but when we met the project manager, Graham Steven and the architects from E11 in the UAE for our preliminary brief, we discovered that the site was on a stunning part of the coastline with a sparkling turquoise sea, so the setting couldn’t have been more perfect”.

The next stop for the team was to pay a visit to Santorini itself. Rather than just going to the usual tourist areas, they chose to visit the ruins at Akrotiri which was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century. They took great inspiration from the old motifs and designs that they saw there, as well as from what they observed walking around the island’s villages. From

these trips the team gathered a plethora of ideas to create designs as authentically-true to the historical Greek island as possible.

Back in Spain the team collaborated with the architects at E11 to create the resort and were in contact with the client’s engineers and project managers at every step of the way, from conception to construction. Team E11 architects and project managers incorporated inspirational landscaping around the buildings and beachfront to add more aesthetic charm. The interior architects and designers at Originals Interiors then initiated the process of crafting the interior spaces to be light, fresh and uncluttered, however conveying a sense of luxury in its simplicit. Winding corridors and intriguing hallways were another feature throughout the buildings, where textured walls with niche lighting added shadows and depth to the white rendered walls. “Our architect was meticulous with the details, ensuring every aspect of the home seamlessly flowed and any unsightly functionality, such

as air conditioning units and the like, were hidden from sight”. The majority of the furniture and art was bespoke and specifically designed for the unique spaces within the property. Each piece was sourced from European design companies, artisans and artists to ensure the successful replication of the original inspirations.

The dining rooms were designed to accommodate a range of events or occasions, be it an intimate dinner or a family luncheon, so these areas were carefully thought-out to enhance the special moments when family or guests come together in the home to enjoy meals. To highlight the importance of these areas, the team incorporated some striking individual pieces, including an enormous hanging fish which was shipped over from a company in Valencia, to make a bold design statement and an inevitable talking point. The colour palette for this space was derived from the ancient frescoes and natural pigments of that era, providing a warm tone in contrast to the blues and whites of the daytime areas. Debbie commented, “The Santorini look is known for its clean lines and minimalist style, but there

were also areas where we could have some fun and inject some personal character to slightly break the mould”.

A remarkable fact about this outstanding project was its turnaround. From construction to completion, the entire process took just over a year, and what is more, this took place during the Covid lockdown. Debbie reflected, “It was incredibly satisfying to deliver on time and within budget during such an unusual and difficult period. This project was carried out with strict confidentiality, but it has recently been transformed into a hotel, now called the Anantara Santorini Abu Dhabi Retreat. This is why we can now publicly discuss our role in this exciting assignment for the very first time. It truly was a labour of love, and we are all immensely proud of it.”

BALANCING TRADITION AND INNOVATION

INTERVIEW WITH CEO OF CARL HANSEN & SØN, KNUD ERIK HANSEN

Carl Hansen & Søn has a long and storied history. How do you balance preserving the company’s heritage with innovating for the future?

We are a family business, where the next generation will eventually take over, so it is important that we develop and grow, because if we don’t, we won’t be able to stay competitive. We will always live by our traditional principles, but we are constantly developing for both consumer and retail markets. We invest a lot of time into training young people to learn every element of carpentry through what we call our “academy”, so that the younger generation understand properly our standards and work ethics as well as providing stable building blocks on which they can innovate and develop ideas for us in the future.

In terms of your dedication to craftsmanship, how do you ensure that this commitment remains at the core of the company, especially as you’re growing globally?

We acknowledge that machines are more popular than ever and continually advancing, however we still, and always will, have a large number of craftsmen working with us. We are very proud of the way we manufacture, ensuring that every piece is excellently and perfectly finished before leaving our premises. Our personal touch brings great satisfaction to me, the team working here and, ultimately, our customers. Due to the work that goes

into creating each piece, our furniture items are truly labours of love that become part of people’s homes for the rest of their lives, and perhaps for the following generation after that. In our factories we have some of the most cutting-edge machinery in Europe, which reduces the physical toll on our workforce however, the finishing and quality control is carried out by our trained craftsmen, and machines can never replace them in this.

How does the company approach the challenge of maintaining the authenticity of Danish design while catering to diverse global markets? What challenges have you faced with the growth that you have achieved? Our challenges have been usually down to pricing. Denmark is one of the most expensive countries in the world when it comes to manufacturing. We know that at Carl Hansen & Søn we make excellent products, so when compared with other companies, we compete on quality and design while others compete on price. If somebody wants a cheap product, then they should not come to us, as we cannot produce our furniture items cheaply. However in general, people are becoming more conscious of the environment and they don’t want to buy cheap and change their furniture every five years because it has deteriorated due to poor manufacturing. We find that our customers want quality, and this is also by far the best option for the environment.

How do your collaborations help in maintaining the brand’s legacy?

We collaborate with highly talented architects and designers. Hans J. Wegner, who was a brilliant architect, and with whom my father partnered with, developed beautiful furniture for us that we still promote 70 years later. Our painstaking attention to detail has always remained the same for the past 200 years, and for someone to come into the market and try to beat the heritage, culture and deep-seated history that we have built-up would be very difficult. I receive offers nearly every day from architects but I am very particular about who I collaborate with in order to respect the heritage of my predecessors. An interesting fact is that we are also venturing into new avenues, for example, we have joined forces with Ockholm Lighting, so we are now manufacturing lamps through our partnership with them. With these kinds of collaborations, we have gradually become more of a lifestyle company with 23 flagship stores all over the world.

What role do you see there is for custom and limited-edition pieces at Carl Hansen & Søn, and is this something important for your brand strategy in the future?

That is a great talking point within the company as we have mixed feelings about this. Some feel we should not continue with limited-edition items but I quite like them. For many years we have celebrated Hans J. Wegner’s birthday on the 2nd April by presenting the Wishbone chair with a different seat, colour, or creating a new piece from the existing product. We only

sell it for one day, on his birthday, and have noticed that they appeal more to collectors, (some of whom never even open up the packaging to use the products!), rather than our usual customers. This opens us up to a completely different market who choose our furniture items as an investment. I must say, I find it a lot of fun, and so long as people can see some meaning in what we are doing, well, we will continue to do it.

What initiatives have you embarked on to stay as sustainable as possible? We sustainably harvest our wood and then craft our furniture pieces to such a high standard that they will last for generations, creating products that do not fit into the realms of the throwaway culture. Any residual wood is used to make accessories and the remaining shavings are sent to a heating plant, where they are burned to heat up our factories as well as 450 homes in the local area – an initiative of which I am very proud.

Which furniture piece is your personal favourite, and why?

I feel the Wishbone chair is as close as you can get to perfection – it is a wonderful chair. In addition, Ole Wanscher, with whom we collaborated, was extremely talented and his Colonial chair is a piece that I also really appreciate – it’s simply beautiful and expertly crafted.

KEEPING HIGH IDEALS

INTERVIEW WITH NESH, CEO OF IDEAL FURNITURE

Ideal Furniture has been an established business for an incredible 21 years. What led you to pursue a career in interior design and furniture?

I guess it all started without me even realising it at the time. I grew up in the UK and my parents were property developers in the 80s, always renovating old houses into beautiful modern homes. Being the eldest of three, I was naturally drawn into this world. I still remember my mother coming home with all these ideas of how she wanted her new creation to look like. She would be designing kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and curtains, as well as landscaping the gardens. I must have been in my late teens, so it was this exposure at such a young age that drew me towards the world of home design.

Tell us more about the new showroom you recently opened in Marbella?

Opening the showroom in the centre of Marbella has truly been a decision based on investing in our future. Our new 2000 square-metre showroom is a testament to our hard work over the past two decades. Our dedication to service and listening to the needs of our clients has enabled us to reach this milestone. I am so excited to see what the next 20 years has to offer! Our new store on Ricardo Soriano 68 is one of the largest showrooms in the area. It enables us to showcase furniture for all aspects of the home, from sofas, beds, dining sets, cabinetry, outdoor furniture and accessories, and

decorative items to lighting. Due to the immense size of the space that we have, we can stock everything all under one roof!

Is there something Ideal Furniture offers that perhaps not everyone is aware of?

We have a huge workshop where we make custom-made furniture for clients. This is a very popular area of our business and very few interior design showrooms offer this. We construct and upholster headboards, beds and all kinds of seating, for example. It is a fabulous service because the client can literally create whatever furniture pieces they want through us. We also offer a highly experienced consultancy service to guide our clients if they are unsure of anything.

Another part of our business that perhaps not many people are aware of is our art gallery. We offer a wide range of affordable art of all genres, from all over the world, to enhance living spaces no matter what style of home.

What excites you about this industry?

Personally, I love the constant changes in the world of design. Sales is also very close to my heart, and I feel so fortunate that this business has taken me all over the world to look for inspiration - not to forget the wonderful people I have met along the way. I love the way no two days are ever the same, and this is a true privilege.

What do you believe are the strengths of Ideal Furniture?

As a company, we strive to be the best in many areas. Service, honesty and transparency are what our clients recognise and appreciate most about Ideal Furniture. We love working with people so our service is very personal, and that is the reason that clients keep coming back to us.

Anyone can sell furniture but not everyone understands and respects the value of clients’ expectations.

Where do you see the future of Ideal Furniture?

We are constantly striving to find better products and offer more bespoke services. I know the future is bright.

VISTA LAGO

A DEVELOPMENT WITH INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION, BUILT BY EXPERTS

Atlas Group’s ethos centres upon excellence, innovation and integrity. The company is thoroughly committed to high-quality projects that recognise the importance of sustainability. A professional team that employs advanced construction techniques underlines this unique approach and is why Atlas Group are the building partner of several villas within Vista Lago Residences.

Backed by an award-winning developer and a team of trusted architects, UDesign Architect Studio and González & Jacobson, the development has garnered international recognition, reflecting the commitment of the teams involved to exceed market standards and provide future residents with a luxurious, yet environmentally conscious, living experience.

Vista Lago Residences is uniquely positioned on one of the highest plots in Real de la Quinta. This extraordinary location offers breathtaking panoramic

views while presenting construction challenges due to the steep terrain.

Mike Gregory, Co-Owner and Director General at Atlas Group, explains the specific challenges and innovative solutions encountered during the design and construction process. “Vista Lago Residences is unique due to its elevation and panoramic views, presenting both a remarkable opportunity and a set of challenges. The steep terrain requires advanced engineering solutions to ensure both stability and safety for the villas. The construction process at Vista Lago surpasses traditional benchmarks by incorporating sustainable building materials, energy-efficient systems, and advanced construction techniques.

“We implement green building practices throughout the project; gardens that are carefully designed using plants suitable to the Mediterranean

climate, and smart irrigation systems to limit water usage. Our dedication to sustainability is not just about meeting standards but setting new ones, ensuring that our projects are environmentally responsible and future-proof. Additionally, Vista Lago Residencies has applied for the BREEAM certification. BREEAM is the most technically advanced criteria for assessing building sustainability. The villas will have several innovations including a purpose built design to achieve A-A energy rating for non-renewable energy consumption and carbon emissions, an intelligent control system to optimise electric usage in the homes and a rainwater harvesting system installed to reduce water usage.”

Taking into consideration the size of the team involved, including BRIGHT and the developers behind the Vista Lago project, Mike Gregory explains

the importance of open communication, “Maintaining a strong relationship with project managers, architects, suppliers and the client hinges on clear communication and a collaborative approach. With Vista Lago, as with all our projects, we prioritise regular meetings and updates to ensure alignment and transparency throughout the project lifecycle. When changes are necessary, we provide detailed explanations and work together to find mutually agreeable solutions that maintain the project’s integrity. Flexibility and mutual respect are key; we value the input of all stakeholders and strive to balance their visions with practical considerations.”

ANDALUCÍA MASTERS AT REAL CLUB DE GOLF SOTOGRANDE

Spanish quartet Adri Arnaus, Jorge Campillo, Nacho Elvira and Pablo Larrazábal return to Spain for the tenth edition of the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters at Real Club de Golf Sotogrande from October 17-20. The tournament, held at the beautiful Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, will be the penultimate event of the DP World Tour’s ‘Back 9’ as players hope to secure their spot in the DP World Tour Play-Offs.

Nine-time DP World Tour winner Larrazábal has made a strong start to the season including a top five finish at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

“Real Club de Golf Sotogrande is a special golf course, and it is a terrific venue for the Estrella Damm N.A. Andalucía Masters,” said Larrazábal.

“I’m fortunate enough to have won on home soil in the past, but to win in Andalucía in front of the home crowds would be very special.”

Three-time DP World Tour winner Campillo is excited to return to Spain at a pivotal time on the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai. “It’s going to be

amazing to return home and play the Andalucía Masters. I have never won in Spain and that has always been a goal of mine.”

Elvira has enjoyed a consistent campaign, missing just one cut in nine starts on the DP World Tour this season, with his best finish being a tie for second at the Magical Kenya Open.

Arnaus earned his DP World Tour playing privileges after securing victory at the Ras Al Khaimah Challenge Tour Grand Final to finish second on the Rankings in 2018, and he has not looked back since. The 29-year-old is relishing the prospect. “I’m excited to have the chance to play at home in front of some big crowds. I had a great experience at Sotogrande last year and I finished in the top 20,” he said.

LA DOLCE RIVA

The most stylish newcomer to Marbella’s Mediterranean marine scene this summer was surprising not a superyacht or sleek speedboat. The opening of the new Riva Lounge saw Puerto Banús join other exclusive locations such as Porto Cervo, The Gritti Palace in Venice and the Yacht Club de Monaco in Monte Carlo. THE BENEFITS OF NATURAL WINES

Natural wines have gained popularity among wine enthusiasts for both their distinct characteristics and potential health benefits. Unlike conventional wines, natural wines are produced using organic or biodynamic farming methods without synthetic chemicals, additives, or extensive technological modification. Often perceived as healthier, natural wines are free of synthetic pesticides and chemicals, and the grapes used retain more of their intrinsic nutrients. Additionally, these wines typically have lower levels or even no sulphites added, which can reduce the risk of headaches and allergic reactions in some individuals. For those sensitive to sulphites, natural wines offer a more comfortable drinking experience. Another significant advantage of natural wines is their unique and authentic taste. Natural winemaking allows the true character of the grape and terroir to shine through, resulting in a more distinct flavour and aroma that reflect the environment in which they were produced. These wines are often described as more vibrant and alive, offering a diverse range of tasting experiences that differ from the more uniform flavours of conventionally

produced wines. Sustainability is another crucial aspect of natural wines. By employing organic and biodynamic farming practices, natural winemakers contribute to the preservation of the environment, promoting soil health and biodiversity. This sustainable approach not only benefits the ecosystem but also ensures the long-term viability of the vineyards.

Curious about natural wines? Over 90 per cent of the wines on offer at Subtil Wine Bar are naturally produced, among a whole host of other complementary products. They also hold regular wine tasting events. Pass by Subtil Wine Bar where the staff will be happy to welcome you, or follow them on Instagram for more information.

BBQ BLISS!

CHEF HELLE FROM CHILI GOURMET CATERING BRINGS US A MOUTH-WATERING RECIPE FOR SUCCULENT SPARERIBS…

One of the best things about living in Spain is that it is BBQ season almost all year round. With the return of the cooler weather allowing us to enjoy our gardens and terraces without the heat of high summer, why not dazzle your guests with these tempting recipes for maple-glazed spareribs, coleslaw and probably the best pommes in the world!

Maple-Glazed Spareribs (4 pax.)

You will need:

2½ kg. Iberian pork spareribs, directly from the butcher

1 large onion, sliced

2 laurel leaves, fresh thyme and 2 dried chillis Salt and 10-12 whole pink peppercorns

Start by peeling off the fine transparent skin on the back of the spareribs. Boil the spareribs together with the onions and all the spices in plenty of water for around 30 minutes. When cooked, take them out of the water to cool down for a few minutes. Cut the spareribs into eight large pieces and then dip them in the homemade BBQ Sauce. Place them on the grill on medium heat, until they have a nice grill marking on both sides. Brush with plenty of BBQ sauce as they are grilling to ensure that they are caramelised. Boiling the raw spareribs before you put them on the BBQ means that you get the most juicy and delicious meat, which easily falls away from the

bones. Boiling also means that the spareribs grill faster on the BBQ, as well as ensuring that they will not be undercooked or dry. You can also boil the spareribs in advance and leave them to marinate in the BBQ sauce until you need them. If you do not have a BBQ, you can still enjoy this dish by baking them in the oven or an air fryer, until they turn a delicious caramelised colour. If you prefer smoked spareribs, you can achieve this by using moist wood-chips to smoke the spareribs on a closed BBQ at 80-100 degreesCelsius for approximately 15 minutes.

Chili Gourmet’s BBQ Sauce

2 chopped garlic cloves

1 onion, chopped into small pieces

500 gr. fresh chopped tomatoes without skin

3 tablespoons of concentrated tomato

4 tablespoons brown sugar

4 tablespoons of maple syrup

4 tablespoons of balsamic red wine reduction

1-2 tablespoons of Worcester Sauce

1 tablespoon of soy sauce

1 tablespoon of Sriracha chilli sauce

1-2 fresh red chillis, finely chopped

1 tablespoon good virgin olive oil

Fresh thyme, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, Tabasco, salt and pepper to taste.

Fry the garlic, onions and fresh chilli in the oil at medium-high heat for a few minutes, before adding the brown sugar and leaving it to caramelise. Add the rest of the ingredients and let the sauce simmer at medium-low heat for around 20 minutes. Blend the sauce with a hand-blender to achieve a nice creamy consistency. This BBQ sauce is a must in the fridge and it is also a perfect companion for beef Taki, burgers and hot wings. The level of hotness is up to you!

American Coleslaw

½ kg. carrots

½ kg. white cabbage

A small red onion

Juice from half a small lemon

1 tablespoon of spiced white wine vinegar

2 tablespoons of your favourite mayonnaise

2 tablespoon of crème fraîche (18%) or natural Greek yoghurt

Fresh chopped parsley, salt and pepper

Peel the carrots and then grate them by hand (it’s great exercise, but if you want to cheat, buy them grated). Leave them to dry on a clean kitchen towel. Cut the white cabbage and the red onion into very thin slices, and set all the veggies aside. Mix the remaining ingredients together and season with salt and pepper before adding the carrots, white cabbage and red onions, and then combine again. Refrigerate for at least half an hour before serving.

Chili Gourmet’s Pommes

1 kg. high-quality potatoes for frying

1 tablespoon white wine vinegar

1½ tablespoons of salt... yes I’m serious!

1 litre of sunflower oil

Paprika, Maldon flake salt and white pepper

Cut the potatoes into boats or long even slices and rinse them in cold water for five to eight minutes, until the water loses the milky white colour. Pop into boiling water with the vinegar and salt until they are “almost” done and still a bit crunchy. Then put them in iced water for a few minutes to stop the boiling process. Drain the water and leave to rest in the refrigerator for at least half an hour. Now they are ready for the first fry in the oil. When the potatoes begin to get only a little colour from the frying, it is important they cool down again and get another chill in the fridge for at least half an hour. These pre-made pommes are ready for the final fry, whenever you need them. Mix the Maldon salt flakes with pepper and a bit of Paprika, and then sprinkle over the pommes before serving. It might seem a lot of work, but I can assure you that the whole process is worth it. You get the crispiest coating on the outside with delicious creamy filling inside. The second time you make these pommes, try to upgrade with sweet potatoes. They also taste like heaven, but are a bit more fragile, so reduce the boiling time. In my honest opinion, these are the world’s tastiest gourmet pommes!

HONEYBEES HELP DIAGNOSE LUNG CANCERS

You don’t have to be an avid entomologist to appreciate bees. While most people regard insects as best kept at arm’s length, the humble honeybee is a different matter. Spot one struggling on the surface of your swimming pool and the usual reaction will be to fish it out, which you perhaps don’t do with wasps as they have an undeserved reputation as being the bad boys of the insect world, but that is the subject of another article.

New research from Michigan State University (MSU) is about to boost bee popularity even further. Researchers found that honeybees can detect biomarkers or chemical concentrations associated with lung cancer in human breath, and distinguish between different cancer cell types using only the ‘smell’ of the cell cultures. “Insects have an amazing sense of smell, the same way dogs do,” said study investigator, Debajit Saha. The researchers wanted to see if honeybees could distinguish between the chemicals in human breath from someone who was healthy compared to someone with lung cancer. Study investigator Elyssa Cox and her team developed a “recipe” for a synthetic breath mixture using different levels of

six compounds and tested the synthetic lung cancer versus healthy human breath mixtures on approximately 20 bees.

The MSU team even designed a custom three-dimensional printed harness to hold a live honeybee while they attached a tiny electrode to its brain to measure any changes in its signals, passing odours on to the antenna of the honeybees and recorded the neural signals from their brain.

The researchers also measured the quantity of cancer-indicating compounds needed to be present in someone’s breath for the honeybee to detect cancer. Saha came to the conclusion that the honeybees detected very small concentrations and therefore felt it was a very strong result.

The MSU researchers now hope their findings will used in developing new tests to detect lung cancer in its early stages.

SELF-COMPASSION, PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND HEALTHY AGEING

Self-compassion is a psychological concept that is finally receiving the attention that it has long deserved. The term refers to a state of mind, in which the individual becomes open to his or her own suffering but does not avoid or disconnect from it, regarding it instead without judgment or criticism. From this perspective, they can then treat themselves with kindness and care.

Whilst this may seem a bit “New Age”, research has demonstrated the positive role self-compassion has in healthy ageing. Those who are more self-compassionate tend to show greater positivity, a better sense of connection with others and greater self-resilience. In other studies, there is evidence that goals associated with positive behaviour change, such as reducing alcohol consumption or increasing physical activity, are more likely to be achieved when a self-compassionate approach is employed. This then leads us to consider interventions that might help us become a little more self-compassionate. In a recent collaborative study published in March this year, “Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Diagnosis, Assessment & Disease Monitoring”, the impact of two such interventions were assessed on physical inactivity and self-compassion.

Around 140 older people were divided into two groups. One group received a mindfulness-based stress reduction programme of two hours a week for eight weeks. The programme focussed on teaching skills of

self-compassion, kindness and meditation. The other group received a health self-management programme with the focus on setting goals and plans to engage in positive health activities such as improved nutrition, increased exercise, reducing stress and future planning.

The results showed the positive effects of the two interventions. The self-management group showed an increase in physical activity (using a self-report questionnaire) and active participation in the programme at the six-month measurement point, suggesting this was a long-term behaviour change. The mindfulness group, on the other hand, showed improvements in self-compassion that were also sustained at the sixmonth point.

These results, taken together, suggest that a simple self-management education and mindfulness training may help to foster long-term changes in self-compassion and in physical activity, both of which are strongly associated with healthy ageing and better cognitive outcomes.

SIXTIES MÁLAGA IS BRILLIANTLY CAPTURED IN A FASCINATING EXHIBITION CURRENTLY RUNNING AT THE MUSEO PICASSO MÁLAGA

“Joel Meyerowitz Europa 1966/67” is a major exhibition of early work by the renowned photographer and brings together more than 200 images, many of which are being exhibited for the first time. In 1966, Meyerowitz set out on a road trip around Europe, driving 20,000 miles through 10 countries and taking 25,000 photographs. Meyerowitz stayed in Málaga for six months and befriended the Escalonas, one of the city’s most famous flamenco families. This friendship led to him taking over 8,000 photographs and capturing hours of high-quality sound recordings of live flamenco.

This unique experience resulted in an extraordinary and intimate photographic record of Spain, which was hugely influential on Meyerowitz and saw the emergence of his signature style. Now regarded as one of the leading photographers of his generation, Meyerowitz redefined how

reality, particularly in colour, was captured and communicated with a camera. While most photographers in the Sixties preferred black-andwhite film, Meyerowitz was one of the first to work in colour, which later led to the acceptance of colour photography as an art medium.

Tracing Meyerowitz’s artistic evolution during his time in Europe, the exhibition features portraits of local people, unique moments captured in everyday street scenes, urban and natural landscapes, and even photographs taken from inside his moving car. The exhibition also includes the complete set of original prints from Meyerowitz’s first solo exhibition at MoMA in 1968.

“Joel Meyerowitz Europa 1966/67” runs at the Museo Picasso Málaga until 15 December 2024.

FERIA HÁBITAT VALÈNCIA

30TH SEPTEMBER - 3RD OCTOBER 2024

Feria Valencia, the most important, influential and inspirational event of the year, will be hosting the leading fairs for the furniture, lighting, decorating, home textiles and kitchen equipment trades. Feria Hábitat València, Textilhogar Home Textiles Premium y Espacio Cocina SICI constitute the foremost showcase for the home and contract sectors – a large-scale event that draws large numbers of both Spanish and international visitors. The highly successful formula comprises more than 90,000 square metres of exhibition space, with 48,000 professionals visiting from 70 countries.

The hotel industry is at the forefront of this year’s event. The Instituto Tecnológico Hotelero will host a series of talks that will address the latest developments and trends that are revolutionising the industry. Outstanding managers from leading hotel chains as well as other renowned professionals will share their insights on a wide range of subjects.

One of the highlights of the entire event, ‘Hotel Hábitat València’, is a stunning installation by designer Héctor Ruiz-Velázquez, which recreates a cutting-edge hotel and displays the best that Spain’s interiors industry

has to offer. The installation will take up more than 500 square metres and feature different types of room typically found in contemporary hotels, as well as a library, spa area and a bar/restaurant area. The far end of the ‘Hotel Hábitat València’ will house the large presentation zone, designed as a huge circular space for the talks and panel sessions.

Héctor Ruiz-Velázquez explains, “In a world dominated by the functional and by homogeneity, authenticity has become a key quality, especially in hotel design. Modern travellers want more than just functional accommodation, they crave unique experiences that stimulate their senses and trigger genuine emotions”.

Feria Hábitat València director Daniel Marco feels that this installation “will not just be one of the upcoming fair’s major attractions” but will also “demonstrate the Spanish interiors industry’s potential in the contract market and, most especially, in the hotel sector”.

WHY DO I NEED APOSTILLED AND LEGALLY TRANSLATED MARRIAGE CONTRACTS TO BUY A PROPERTY?

Purchasing a property in Spain is a process that can present many challenges. As experts in property law, we understand the importance of protecting your property interests and ensuring that all transactions are carried out in accordance with Spanish law.

When you decide to purchase a property in your name only, and not as part of the marital estate, it is essential to present certain documents that validate this intention. One of the most important documents in this process is a legally translated and apostilled marriage contract.

Marriage contracts in Spain are agreements between spouses that establish the matrimonial property regime to which they will be subject during the marriage. These documents can define, for example, whether the acquired assets will be shared (sociedad conyugal) or if each spouse will have exclusive control over their own assets (separación de bienes).

Why do I need to apostille marriage contracts in Spain?

An apostille is a certification that authenticates the signature, seal or position of a public document issued in one country, so that it is recognised as valid in another. This is essential in international transactions. By apostilling your marriage contracts, you will guarantee that these documents are legal and validated abroad, which is indispensable in the purchase of a property in another country.

Importance of Legal Translation in Spain

A legal translation in Spain is a specialised translation that not only translates the text of a legal document, but also maintains the legal meaning and technical accuracy of the original. By legally translating your

marriage contracts, you ensure that the authorities and entities involved in the purchase of the property clearly understand the content and validity of the documents in their own language.

What are the risks if I do not present these documents?

Invalidation of the purchase process: Without apostilled and translated marriage contracts, the purchase of the property may be considered invalid. Legal confusion: You could face legal problems when trying to prove that the property is your exclusive domain.

Delays and additional costs: The lack of the required documents can lead to significant delays in the purchase process, as well as possible additional costs to rectify the situation.

In summary, legally translated and apostilled marriage contracts are essential for those wishing to purchase a freehold property in Spain. They ensure that your investment is protected and complies with current regulations, thus avoiding legal complications in the future.

At Welex we are here to assist you through every step of this important process. Our team of experts will take care of the apostille and legal translation of your marriage contracts, ensuring a safe and smooth purchase.
