EDITOR’S NOTE 6

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2024

In recent times we have become sadly accustomed to welcoming in the new year after enduring a tumultuous and at times traumatic previous 12 months. Unfortunately, this year is no exception, and our thoughts are with the many people around the world who have nothing (or too little) to celebrate right now. Nevertheless, let’s start 2024 with a positive outlook, and to that end here’s some more sanguine news snippets that intrigued us as 2023 drew to a close… A report in The Week forecast that “transparent wood” had the potential to offer a promising future for the environment. “New techniques that change the structure of material could mean tougher and more efficient windows and phone screens.” Dezeen reported on another fascinating new design trend that “prioritises the needs of bugs and animals above human beings”, noting that “interspecies design is the next step in creating more sustainable spaces and objects”. Dezeen also interviewed Atelier One engineer Chris Matthews, who predicted that the strength and availability of bamboo could make this natural material a major player – as dominant in construction as concrete and steel. “This idea that we have a sheet of rigid, extremely polished buildings, built from all kinds of steel and concrete, it has to change,” he said. “Bamboo has a real part to play as a low-carbon material, and it needs to be part of the toolkit that we have moving forward.” And finally, as has become traditional in recent years, in December the design and décor world welcomed – to varying degrees of enthusiasm – Pantone’s announcement of its colour of the year for 2024. Described as “Peach Fuzz”, the colour was, according to Pantone, selected to “capture our desire to nurture ourselves and others. It’s a velvety gentle peach tone whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body and soul”. The colour institute’s executive director Leatrice Eiseman explained further, “In seeking a hue that echoes our innate yearning for closeness and connection, we chose a colour radiant with warmth and modern elegance. A shade that resonates with compassion, offers a tactile embrace, and effortlessly bridges the youthful with the timeless.” With the profound hope that the world is able to embrace more compassion in 2024, we wish everyone a serene and enriching New Year. TABLEWARE

FOR EVERY OCCASION In the realm of culinary delight, the canvas upon which gastronomic masterpieces are presented holds a profound significance that transcends its utilitarian purpose, often embodying art, style and cultural expression. Venturing beyond the realms of opulence, the embrace of organic materials in tableware defines a commitment to sustainability and a connection with nature. The tactile beauty of wood, the earthy charm of clay and the rustic elegance of stone bring a sense of authenticity to the table, creating an ambience that resonates with simplicity and environmental consciousness. Decorative plates can elevate the dining experience, crafted with meticulous attention to detail and featuring ornate patterns inspired by nature or traditional artistry. Porcelain, with its delicate translucence and timeless appeal, emerges as a quintessential protagonist in the world of tableware. Renowned for its fine craftsmanship and enduring beauty, porcelain effortlessly bridges the gap between classic and contemporary aesthetics. From minimalist modern designs to intricately hand-painted patterns, porcelain tableware adds a touch of refinement to any dining setting. Recognising that every occasion has its unique character, it is always worth exploring the diverse styles of tableware that cater to different events. Whether you need the understated grace of casual dinnerware for everyday meals, the lavish splendour of formal settings for special celebrations or the whimsical charm of thematic tableware for festive occasions, each style carries its own narrative and sets the stage for memorable moments.

Inspired by organic forms derived from nature, the Mame collection by Muubs combines natural textures with durable stoneware and craftsmanship. LIVING ROOMS ...

LIVING ROOMS WITH STYLE As winter well and truly sets in, the living room becomes more of our focus. It offers a multi-functional space where we not only gather but can also relax on our own to perhaps read or watch television on a comfy sofa with a hot drink. Whether your design style is edgy and bold or elegant and understated, your living room shows guests how you like to live and feel comfortable in your home, so give it some careful consideration. It goes without saying that seating plays a huge role in creating a relaxing environment, with low-level casual sofas becoming more popular in recent years instead of the rigid sofas and armchairs of years ago. Modular sofas and sectionals allow you to adapt your living room layout to accommodate different occasions. Whether you choose armchairs that follow suit with the style of your sofa or go for a statement chair, small tables offer convenient surfaces for resting drinks, devices, candles and lamps. You can also consider a mix of coffee tables and side tables in various shapes and sizes for visual interest. Look for materials such as wood or metal with rich finishes to add a touch of elegance to your living space. While maintaining a welcoming and stylish living room, it is essential to keep clutter at bay. Sideboards, shelving systems and small tables with built-in drawers offer functionality with aesthetic appeal, concealing objects and creating a well-organised and tranquil space. Take a look at these inspiring ideas…

FANTASTIC

FABRICS The textures and hues of fabrics can redefine a room’s ambience, turning it into a reflection of personal taste and aesthetic sensibility. As we dive into the world of fabrics, we find a rich tapestry of possibilities, from the soothing embrace of neutral colours to the vibrant energy of a carefully curated pop of shades. One fabric that effortlessly fuses both texture and colour is luxurious velvet, a timeless material that exudes opulence and elegance. Velvet not only adds a tactile dimension to furnishings but also creates an atmosphere of refined sophistication. However, if velvet is not to your taste, linens, viscose and polyamide each bring their own unique qualities to the table and are often the chosen fabrics used for home textiles. Linen offers a touch of natural elegance and breathability and viscose provides a luxurious drape and silky feel, while polyamide brings strength and durability. Understanding the distinct characteristics of these fabrics facilitates informed choices when buying textiles for particular uses within home interior design. Neutral colours bring understated sophistication and can blend seamlessly into many design plans, offering a harmonious backdrop for other elements in the living space to shine. Pops of colour and bold patterns can infuse energy into a room, creating focal points and adding visual interest. Enter into the world of fabrics, where every weave and hue contributes to the tapestry of a well-designed living space…

The coming together of two creative minds – between fashion designer Alice Temperley and Emily Mould, director of design and excellence for the Romo Group – crosses the bridge from exquisite fashion design into interior masterpieces, with sparkling beads and sequins, shimmering metallics and intricate embroideries as large-scale works of art. Romo is available from Arte del Lusso in Calle Lagasca in San Pedro de Alcántara (www.artedellusso.es) and Cortidea on the Mijas Road and in Urb. Marbella Real (www.cortidea.es).

ELEVATING THE LIVING SPACE

BELOW YOUR FEET The transformative power of rugs cannot be celebrated enough. These versatile textiles not only serve as practical accessories underfoot but can also stand out as bold statements of style and elegance. The world of rugs offers a rich tapestry of textures, colours, shapes and fibres that redefine the way we experience and interact with our living spaces. Rugs are champions of warmth and a welcoming ambience. In a world of clean lines, sleek surfaces and minimalist designs, these textile wonders inject a sense of cosiness and homeliness – inviting you to linger and relax. At the heart of contemporary rug design lies a celebration of texture. From plush embrace high-pile rugs to sleek flatweaves, textures play a pivotal role in elevating the tactile experience within a room. Statement rugs become touchable works of art that draw the eye and invite exploration and engagement. The carefully curated colour palette of a rug can tie together disparate elements within a room, creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing space. Shapes take on new significance in the contemporary rug world, with designers experimenting beyond traditional rectangles and circles. Geometric patterns, irregular shapes and abstract designs add a cutting-edge dimension to these floor adornments, turning them into focal points that demand attention. The interplay of shapes on a rug can complement existing furniture or become a striking centrepiece that anchors the entire room. So let’s embark on a journey through the fascinating world of contemporary rug design this winter…

Renowned artist and designer Paula Cademartori collaborated with Milanese rug brand Illulian to create the exquisite Beijos hand-knotted rug, which was crafted in Nepal and comprises 50 per cent silk and 50 per cent fine Himalayan wool dyed with natural pigments. It has 152,000 knots per square metre, highlighting its exceptional workmanship. Beijos is highly customisable and can undergo stain-resistant treatment (www.illulian.com).

CREATING A

GLOWING HOME Lighting is not just about functionality anymore. These days it also plays a fundamental role in crafting the ambience and personality of a living space. From minimalist fixtures that seamlessly blend in with contemporary aesthetics to ornate statement pieces that could be mistaken for works of art, the world of home lighting is diverse. The portable lighting sector has grown substantially in recent years, with companies bringing out more versatile lamps to provide additional options for moving or directing light. There is now a greater range of wall sconces that serve as architectural statements, playing with shadows and angles and transforming walls in canvases of light. Table lamps could be considered to be the unsung heroes of the lighting world, as they are often understated while providing layers and pockets of light, converting the room into a cosy and welcoming space. A glamorous suspension light or chandelier is usually an effective way to add drama to a room. However, if you are after a more subtle look while keeping a focal point, there are many suspension lamps that feature a minimalist design which can offer alluring illumination. Take a look at these dazzling ideas…

Young Danish designer Felicia Arvid created her first lamp, PLI, for Foscarini. She took a degree in architecture after studying fashion design and developed a collection of multi-functional garment-objects. Utilising this educational background, she creates essential solutions where function meets form using material that becomes the protagonist of the design – as is the case with PLI. Foscarini is available from Vilusen Project in Edif. Camoján in Marbella (www.vilusenproject.es) and Gunni & Trentino in Marbella Club (www.gunnitrentino.es).

CRAFTING THE PERFECT

DINING EXPERIENCE AT HOME

To curate a dining space that provides functionality, sophistication and comfort, it is wise to focus on the quality of materials so that they stand the test of time. Wood is the most popular choice for dining furniture, as not only does it exhibit remarkable strength and durability but it also showcases a rich, natural beauty that only improves with age. The warmth of oak, the deep tones of walnut and the luxurious appeal of mahogany create a timeless backdrop for any dining setting. A well-crafted table with clean lines will seamlessly integrate into a wide range of interior styles. Whether you opt for minimalist-style or go for upholstered dining chairs, comfort is key so rounded backrests and seat cushions are always a sound option. In the pursuit of timeless design, craftsmanship plays a pivotal role. Furniture that is built to last is a testament to both the skill of the artisan and the quality of the materials used. Look for dining tables and chairs crafted with precision joinery and attention to detail. Investing in wellmade furniture both ensures longevity and contributes to sustainable living. Timeless pieces reduce the need for frequent replacements, promoting a more eco-friendly approach to interior design.

The Black Lombok dining set is an elegant range that is characterised by its slender legs. The chair is made from rattan with a curved back, comfortable cushion and sturdy base. The black oval dining table is made from recycled teak to match the chairs and it sits under their Hanging Hat Moonj suspension lamp. Available from Sybartum on the Mijas Road and in Pol. Ind. San Pedro de Alcántara, or you can buy their products online at www.sybartum.com.

BATHROOMS

WITH AN ELEGANT DESIGN When it comes to bathroom design the materials chosen often take centre-stage. Smooth, unadorned surfaces and clean lines define the aesthetic, with materials such as sleek porcelain, natural stone and warm wood elevating the tone of the space. Marrying different finishes creates a tactile experience and an accomplished design. A carefully selected colour palette provides the original canvas upon which the overall feeling of a room can unfold. Neutral tones such as soft whites, soothing greys and subdued earthy hues dominate the world of bathroom design, creating a harmonious ambience. These muted colours not only evoke a sense of tranquillity but also serve as a timeless backdrop for other design elements to shine. A bathroom with a minimalist design embraces functionality with a sense of luxury, with every element serving a purpose and contributing to the seamless flow of the space. Streamlined fixtures, hidden storage solutions and unobtrusive lighting enhance both form and function. This approach not only promotes a clutter-free environment but also elevates the overall sense of calm.

The Minimum collection by Falper features a minimalist design with monolithic shapes, sculptural features and clean lines. Minimum is a multi-faceted, modular and customisable collection of free-standing shelves, wall-mounted washbasins and cabinet units. CONTEMPORARY KITCHEN DESIGN THIS WINTER The kitchen stands as a testament to the interplay of functionality and aesthetic innovation. Much more than just a mere space for culinary endeavours, contemporary kitchens have evolved into dynamic hubs that reflect personal style, technological advancements and a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. There is a lot to take onboard when considering a kitchen design, including choosing from the wide range of materials available. Wood, with its natural warmth and versatility, is often a popular choice in crafting kitchens that exude both charm and functionality. In contemporary kitchen design, the harmonious fusion of diverse materials brings a refreshing complexity to the overall look. Sleek stainless steel, cool marble and textured glass can all intermingle to appeal to the senses, as well as offering functionally. Appliances are no longer just nondescript-looking machines and have instead become objects of beauty that homeowners like to show off rather than hide away in the cupboard. With innovation seemingly unbounding, appliances are increasingly providing a more pleasurable experience to help us create our culinary masterpieces.

The Bora Horizon linear pendant light is available in black, moss green and rose gold. A BEDROOM

WHERE DREAMS ARE CREATED The bedroom is more than just a place to sleep. It is where we truly unwind, rejuvenate and indulge in moments of peace. When designing your bedroom, you have to consider that the experience goes beyond mere aesthetics and that it is about creating a luxurious retreat that offers a restful night. Treating yourself to sumptuous bed linen is worth the investment as many sometime overlook the fact that high-quality, luxurious bedding can be a game-changer for your sleep experience. Choosing materials such as Egyptian cotton or sateen with a good thread count will pay off. Crisp, breathable sheets enhance comfort and promote a better night’s sleep. The headboard can sometimes serve as the focal point of a bedroom, making it an ideal canvas for personal expression. Statement headboards are a growing trend, with designs ranging from upholstered masterpieces to intricately carved wood. Beyond aesthetics, headboards offer essential support for late-night reading or relaxing in bed, adding both style and functionality to your space. In the quest for the ultimate night’s sleep, the bed itself obviously plays a pivotal role. A bed that alleviates pressure points promotes better sleep quality. Adjustable beds with ergonomic features allow for customisable sleeping positions, catering to individual preferences. To help keep the room organised, beds with built-in storage solutions are both space-saving and highly practical. Take a look at these ideas…

The new Grimani collection by Yves Delorme is made from 300 thread count cotton sateen. The collection pays tribute to the famous Foliage Room in the Palazzo Grimani di Santa Maria Formosa in Venice. The collection celebrates the wide range of plants, flowers and fruit trees that inhabit the room with whimsical expression (www.yvesdelorme.com).

Escandi Design is considered to be a haven for those seeking Scandinavian and tropical-inspired furniture as well as a vast array of decorative items. Opening its doors in March 2021, the showroom has undergone remarkable growth over the last three years, and it has rapidly become a prominent name on the Costa del Sol. Six months ago visionary owners Johan and Gitte Hellke decided to expand their 800 square-metre showroom by adding a further 1,500 square metres on the upper level, and by the middle of next year this floor will comprise an impressive 3,000 square metres of showroom space. This expansion reflects the couple’s commitment to providing a wide range of beautiful, highquality products for the home on an impressively large scale. Johan and Gitte are quick to emphasise that they are not designers themselves. They attribute their success to their shared passion for discovering unique custom pieces and their special collaborations with small local factories to offer customers exceptional products that are beautifully made. This approach adds a personal touch which they believe sets them apart from the mainstream. Now Escandi Design is set to transform a section of the showroom into a “Gourmet Corner”. This new addition will feature products with a distinct design twist, aligning with the brand’s ethos of providing not just furniture but an experience. The Hellkes have created a showroom that is more than just a furniture shop, providing a space where people who seek unique style and quality can peruse in a relaxed environment. When Johan and Gitte decided to open their showroom, they strategically chose the Mijas Road so that they could offer a huge space for people 154

to visit with easy parking facilities, attracting clients from as far away as Sotogrande and Nerja. Escandi Design has become synonymous with offering high-quality furniture items of distinction, and they have noticed that those with discerning tastes are more than happy to make the journey to visit them. However, the online shop on their website is also proving hugely popular. Escandi Design has an extensive selection of wooden tables made from Suar or rosewood, with many available to view in their showroom. Apart from its own products, Escandi Design has had many collaborations with renowned brands such as Carpe Diem Beds (Escandi Design are their only official dealer in Spain), Iittala, Le Creuset, Zuiver, Sackit, Brabantia, Elementi and Smeg, for example, to further enhance the portfolio. In totally transforming the terraced house, they prioritised flow and natural light by maximising the use of minimal spaces and incorporating large windows and skylights. The overall sense of harmony and calm was also enhanced by using natural materials and texture in the walls, while false ceilings were eliminated to obtain more height. The ground floor features an open design, harmoniously merging the living room, kitchen and dining room. Sliding doors are camouflaged into the walls, allowing an uninterrupted transition from indoor to outdoor spaces, and creating an atmosphere of continuity and breadth. On 156

Opened towards the end of last year, Palacio Gran Vía is located in an imposing refurbished building in front of Granada’s cathedral. Since 1905 the building – formerly the headquarters of Banca Rodríguez Acosta – has become one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. It was designed by architect Juan Montserrat Vergés, a symbol of modernism in Granada. A meticulous renovation project, led by architect Carlos Quintanilla, preserved valuable architectural elements such as coffered ceilings, hydraulic floors and even the bank’s original safes, in both the communal areas and the rooms. Ideal for an urban getaway, the hotel comprises 38 rooms and suites. Guests can enjoy the local gastronomy and views without having to leave 170

Two major exhibitions opened in 2022 – Gego’s Measuring Infinity and Marine Hugonnier’s Field Reports – will remain on show at the Guggenheim in Bilbao into the new year. Continuing until 4 February, Measuring Infinity showcases the work of one of the most significant artists to emerge from the Latin American scene during the second half of the 20th century: German-Venezuelan Gertrud Goldschmidt (also popularly known as Gego). Arranged chronologically and thematically, the exhibition examines the artist’s formal and conceptual contributions through her organic forms, linear structures and modular abstractions. Nearly 150 works from the 1950s through the early 1990s are featured including sculptures, drawings, prints, textiles and artist’s books, as well as photographic images of installations and public artworks, sketches, publications and letters.

According to the museum, “Situating Gego’s practice in the artistic contexts of Latin America that transpired over the course of her lengthy career, the survey also considers her intersections with – and departures from – key transnational art movements such as Geometric Abstraction and Kinetic Art.” Marine Hugonnier’s Field Reports exhibition is on show until 21 January, in the Guggenheim’s film and video gallery, a space where the museum exhibits key works of video art, audiovisual installations and moving images as artistic language. The core piece in the show, Meadow Report (2021), aims to draw attention to one of the first documents published on climate change, also known as “The Limits to Growth” or “Meadows Report”. Released in 1972, the document “predicted the catastrophic consequences of constant unbridled exploitation of the Earth’s resources”. www.guggenheim-bilbao.eus HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES 2024

La Veranda is offering a sumptuous winter menu highlighted by a selection of classic dishes with a modern touch and created using the finest seasonal products. Located in the Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís Marbella Resort, the restaurant offers diners a professional and experienced team who pay meticulous attention to providing exquisite service. An almost theatrical experience in the preparation of the dishes plays a fundamental role at La Veranda. The beef steak tartar, for example, is prepared in front of the customer, the traditional chateaubriand is carved on the spot and at the table, and the crêpes suzette are flambéed in a cart according to the guest’s taste. Chef Santiago Altuna has devised a wonderfully varied menu, with local ingredients and recipes predominating. The starters include free-range egg on creamy truffled potato and crispy artichokes; a fish and seafood soup with shrimp and crispy tapioca; and grilled foie gras on brioche with ice cider sauce and Granny Smith apple. There are dishes for vegans, such as grilled and pipirrana-spiced white asparagus with a fennel, grapefruit and cashew vinaigrette; and Thai purple eggplant with a balsamic reduction and Kalamata olives. 172

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2024

Fish specialities among the main courses include wild sea bass loin with pak choi and light celery rave purée; red mullet with red shrimp and saffron cream; and Huelva carabinero (prawns) with asparagus, crispy bacon and fried roe foam. The meat options are highlighted by grilled quail stuffed with corn, bacon and provolone with spicy Bimi and wild mushrooms; and suckling lamb chops in batter with boletus, mashed potato, arugula and wild mushrooms. For dessert, diners can enjoy a classic Grand Marnier soufflé with Worcestershire sauce; textured chocolate and hazelnut with coffee and hot chocolate sauce; or a warm caramelised apple tart with toffee jelly and Tahitian vanilla ice cream. La Veranda is the resort’s most elegant restaurant, with a décor featuring centenary tapestries in blue tones, which create a sophisticated and cosy ambience, and originally designed golden lamps that provide soft and pleasant illumination while enhancing the beauty of the decorative elements. New Help for Those with Low Vision or Blindness Australian researchers have developed a new type of technology known as acoustic touch, and it helps people “see” using sound. The technology has the potential to transform the lives of those who are blind or have low-level vision. Researchers from the University of Technology Sydney and the University of Sydney have developed new smart glasses that translate visual information into distinct sound icons. “Smart glasses typically use computer vision and other sensory information to translate the wearer’s surroundings into computer-synthesised speech,” said Chin-Teng Lin, who is a global leader in brain-computer interface research from the University of Technology Sydney. “However, acoustic touch technology sonifies objects, creating unique sound representations as they enter the device’s field of view. For example, the sound of rustling leaves might signify a plant, or a buzzing sound might represent a mobile phone.” The researchers tested the device with 14 participants (seven individuals with blindness or low-level vision and seven blindfolded sighted individuals who served as a control group). They found that the wearable device, equipped with acoustic touch technology, significantly enhanced the ability of blind or low-vision individuals to recognise and reach for objects, without causing too much mental effort. Magnetic Wound-Healing Gel May Be Beneficial for Diabetic Wounds A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore has developed an innovative magnetic wound-healing gel that promises to accelerate the healing of diabetic wounds, reduce the rates of recurrence, and lower the incidents of limb amputations. Diabetic patients, whose natural wound-healing capabilities are compromised, often develop chronic wounds that are slow to heal. 174

JANUARY & FEBRUARY 2024

Such non-healing wounds could cause serious infections resulting in painful outcomes, such as limb amputation. With this new approach, a bandage is pre-loaded with a hydrogel containing skin cells for healing and magnetic particles. To maximise therapeutic results, a wireless external magnetic device is used to activate skin cells and accelerate the wound healing process. Tai Chi May Benefit Individuals with Parkinson’s Disease The Chinese martial art that involves sequences of very slow controlled movements may curb the symptoms and complications of Parkinson’s disease for several years, according to a new study published online in the Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery & Psychiatry. Its practice was associated with slower disease progression and lower doses of required drugs over time. The researchers monitored two groups of patients with Parkinson’s disease for more than five years from January 2016 to June 2021. One group of 147 patients practised Tai Chi twice a week for an hour, aided by the provision of classes to improve their technique. The other group of 187 patients continued with their standard care, but didn’t practise Tai Chi. Disease progression was slower at all monitoring points in the Tai Chi group, as assessed by three validated scales to assess overall symptoms, movement and balance. In the Tai Chi group, fewer medications were required and sleep and quality of life continuously improved. Additionally, the prevalence of complications was significantly lower in the Tai Chi group than in the comparison group. L I F E ’S E SS E N T I A L 8 BY RACHEL GARROD

Moving into a new year is always a good time to take stock of our health. Up to a decade ago the American Heart Association (AHA) identified several factors associated with healthy ageing and the reduction of cardiovascular disease. The most recent update, “Life’s Essential 8,” is a checklist of positive attributes that boost health. The first five concern our lifestyles. We should aim to get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week; eat a balanced diet of nuts, legumes, vegetables and protein; avoid smoking; have between seven and eight hours of sleep a night; and maintain a healthy weight. The AHA also recommends we should keep our blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol within normal limits. In a recent study, Nour Makarem and colleagues at Columbia University found that adherence with these recommendations not only improves our health but can decelerate biological ageing. More than six thousand participants took part in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and provided information on their compliance with the “Essential 8”. In addition, objective measures of blood pressure and sugar, cholesterol and weight were taken.

The team found that participants who most closely followed the “Life’s Essential 8” guidance had a biological age that was, on average, six years younger than their chronological age. In another study of over 700,000 people, adopting these eight healthy habits by age 40 saw people living more than two decades longer than those who did not adhere. If you are already a bit older than 40, there is significant benefit for those up to age 60. While the research isn’t there yet regarding those over 60 years, I am a firm believer that it’s never too late to make positive change. As you think about your goals for 2024 why not use the opportunity to get your blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels checked? Once you know your levels you will be one step ahead to act on “Life’s Essential 8”. As always if you want help becoming more active, please get in touch. T H I R D -G E N E R AT I O N PA N A M E R A DY N A M I C E N H A N C E M E N T O F P O RS C H E ’S LUXU RY S E DA N Porsche has revamped its Panamera with a special focus on emphasising the model’s sporting pedigree. This third generation of the marque’s luxury sedan is highlighted by a wider range of digital features, a fresh and expressive design, and a broader spectrum between dynamic performance and driving comfort. Underlining Porsche’s claim to offer the “most dynamic sedan in the segment”, the Panamera is equipped with more powerful E-Hybrid powertrains and a new high-specification suspension system.

According to the luxury sports car company, its profile is also enhanced by a “fundamentally modernised operating concept and plenty of innovative technology”, including the new Porsche Active Ride suspension system, “which combines a significantly higher level of comfort with the sporting driving characteristics for which Porsche is famous”. The integration of the user’s own digital ecosystem into the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) offers new ways of interacting with the car. “The technical yet elegant, dynamic design of the new Panamera gives the model line’s attractive proportions a fresh update. A wide range of driver assistance systems and a fundamentally redesigned, drivercentred interior enhance the driving experience.” Porsche offers a total of four efficient E-Hybrid powertrains for the new Panamera. All E-Hybrid variants benefit from greater performance, range and efficiency. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid is ready at market launch, and the heart of its powertrain is a fundamentally revised four-litre V8 turbo engine. The output of the newly developed electric motor is 140 kW (190 PS). Together, they create a system output of 500 kW (680 PS), while the system torque reaches 930 Nm. The Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 315 km/h. Its battery capacity is now 25.9 kWh, which enables an equivalent electric range of up to 91 kilometres in the combined WLTP cycle or 83–93 kilometres in the city cycle. A new 11 kW onboard AC charger shortens the charging time at suitable charging points to two hours and 39 minutes. Retaining the characteristic lines and proportions of the model line, the new Panamera measures 5,052 millimetres in length and is 1,937 millimetres wide and 1,423 millimetres high. Up front, an additional air intake above

the number plate compensates for the increased air requirement of the drive systems. The redesigned window line in the sideview reinforces the four-door sports sedan’s character, and the outer edges of the rear window are flush with the contour of the body, creating harmonious lines at the rear of the car. The Porsche Driver Experience cockpit concept features a carefully designed balance between digital and analogue control elements, positioning the input and output elements that are essential for driving along the driver’s axis. An optional passenger display closely integrates the passenger into the driving experience. The 10.9-inch screen displays vehicle performance data on request, allows operation of the infotainment system and supports video streaming while the car is in motion. In order to avoid distracting whomever is behind the wheel, the passenger display cannot be seen from the driver’s seat. Coinciding with the launch of the new model, Porsche unveiled a specially created one-off car in Shanghai. The Panamera Turbo Sonderwunsch was described as showcasing “the attention to detail with which Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur implements the Sonderwunsch program. This highly exclusive, unique car visualises how a totally personal dream sports car could look for a Sonderwunsch customer.” Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program includes consultation, planning and expert execution of custom colour and material wishes and even the building of customised one-offs. The new Porsche Panamera is available to order now, and deliveries in Europe are due to begin in March 2024.

Do you have a property plot in Andalucía situated on urban land (or before that on land for development) and with a cattle track crossing it? If so, do you know that there are legal instruments in Spain that allow you to remove or exclude that part of your land that is not affected by a cattle track? Livestock trails are public roads used for the transit of livestock, which form part of the historical, cultural and natural heritage of Andalucía. They are of great ecological, scenic and social importance, as they contribute to biodiversity conservation, ecological connectivity, rural development and sustainable leisure and tourism. However, cattle trails are also affected by the urbanisation process and pressure from other land uses, which can threaten their integrity and functionality. For this reason, Andalucian legislation establishes a series of instruments to protect, recover and manage the cattle trails, as well as to regulate their use and management in Spain. One of these instruments is “desafectación” (in Spanish), which consists of the exclusion of land with cattle tracks from the public domain, when they have lost the characteristics of their original definition or destination. This implies the loss of their status as a cattle track and the possibility of using the land for other purposes. “Disaffection” is regulated by the “Reglamento de Vías Pecuarias de Andalucía”, approved by Decree 155/1998 of 21 July 1998. According to this regulation, disaffection can be initiated ex officio or at the request of a party, and it requires an administrative file that includes a technical justification report, an appraisal report, a proposed resolution and a public information procedure. In Spain, disaffection must be motivated by one of the following causes: – The existence of urban planning that foresees a new land-use plan incompatible with the maintenance of the cattle route. 186

– The material or legal impossibility of re-establishing the original or alternative route of the cattle track when it has been illegally occupied or substantially altered. – The existence of a public or social interest justifying disaffection, provided that adequate compensation to the public heritage of the cattle routes is guaranteed. Disaffection has important legal consequences, because it entails the loss of the domanial nature of the land and its incorporation into the private patrimony of the Junta de Andalucía (regional government). Disaffection also has significant environmental and territorial implications, as it can lead to the fragmentation or loss of the green corridors that connect natural spaces and facilitate the movement of fauna and flora in Spain. For this reason, it must be an exceptional and justified measure, subject to rigorous administrative and social control. In this respect, the regional government has recently approved formulation of the “Green Infrastructure Plan for Connectivity in Andalucía”, which aims to establish an integrated and coherent network of natural and semi-natural spaces that contribute to the conservation and restoration of ecosystems and their services. This plan includes livestock trails as one of the key elements to guarantee the ecological connectivity and sustainable development of Andalucian land.
