Special fund-raising tournament for disabled players The second event on the Para/Golfers Tour – held under the auspices of the European Sight Impaired Golf Academy (SIGA) – is scheduled for Málaga’s Parador club on 22 June, with a third planned for October. SIGA is no-fee, non-profit, and legally registered charity, set up by Jack Nusbaum in January 1994. He says the catalyst for the tour was the fact that, although there were many professional-based golf tours, there weren’t any for disabled golfers. Initially, last year a par-three event was arranged for beginners and novices and a larger event for more established golfers, from Scotland and other countries. SIGA sigajack@yahoo.com

Situated in the heart of the attractive mountain village of Benahavís, Bar El Capricho is well worth a visit. Since opening in 2010 the bar has become well-known for its selection of delicious cocktails – the mojitos are reported to be praised even in London! Owners Christine and Pedro López have created a real gem in the mountains. During the winter they provide clients with an open fire to snuggle up before, and for the summer

months there is a wonderful chill out terrace with full mountains views – a great place to relax while sipping on a frozen Margarita. From June through to September there is live music, so visitors can dance the night away. Appropriately, “El Capricho” translates as “The Treat”! Bar El Capricho Calle Málaga 13, Benahavís Tel. Spring gala dinner at Hotel Fuerte

Rhys Daniels Trust

Butterfly Ball… and Celebrity Golf Challenge The celebrity-studded Butterfly Ball returns to Marbella on 15 June, with the associated Max Clifford Celebrity Golf Challenge running from 13 to 16 June at La Cala Resort. Held at Hotel Puente Romano, the ball includes dinner followed by an evening of entertainment and dancing. Tickets cost €150. The golf event includes various package options, with or without accommodation, playing as a three-ball plus a celebrity or in a four-ball – ranging from €715 to €1,485. Tickets are also available for the welcome dinner, lunches and barbecue. The aim of the Rhys Daniels Trust is to provide “home from home” accommodation in support of major children’s hospitals across the UK, “as a perfect environment for children and their families at such a stressful time”. All the facilities are self contained and supplied free of charge and for as long as the hospital and the trust agrees the family needs them during the child’s hospital treatment.

Members of the Costa Press Club enjoyed the Fuerte hotel’s luxury buffet dinner when the first “spring gala” meeting of the year was held in Marbella. Isabel María García Bardón, president of the Fuerte hotel group, personally greeted members and their invited guests – representing several different nationalities and various media organisations along the Coast. Comprising journalists, photographers, editors, publicists and writers, the Costa Press Club (officially known as the Asociación Club de Prensa de la Costa del Sol) was officially launched in May 2002 to provide an opportunity for media professionals to meet socially and exchange industry news and views on a regular basis. Dinners are held on the second Thursday of each month (apart from August), usually with a guest speaker. Representatives of the press, media and communications industries on the Costa del Sol are welcome to attend one of the club’s monthly meetings and find out more about how to become a member. Sanitexpat Insurance

Health coverage for expatriates

Korsch Designs

Spain’s premier health insurer has teamed up with a Costa del Sol company to provide personalised services and worldwide cover to expatriates. The new Sanitexpat office in Mijas-Costa enables clients to find the right private insurance in their own language: “bespoke” health coverage specially adapted to individual requirements. An officially dedicated Sanitas office for expatriates, Sanitexpat provides a professional service with fully-qualified health assessors able to attend to the needs of clients in their own language, including terms and conditions, product descriptions, a multilingual support desk, and designated websites and social networking sites providing latest news, information and feedback. Speaking at the official opening, managing director Diana Norris said, “I’m absolutely delighted that all the hard work and perseverance has paid off and we can now offer the whole expatriate community an official Sanitas office to deal with any issues that might arise related to their health insurance. From simple authorisations to providing policy explanations, Sanitexpat is there to assist all customers in their own native tongue.” Added co-owner Tony Norris, “With the introduction of seven new languages over the next 12 months, and in addition to our principal website Sanitexpat.com, we intend to provide a unique and personalised service currently unavailable through existing channels.” Guaranteeing immediate quotations, a 24-hour multi-lingual help line and affordable health plans (with no “co-payments”), the new Sanitexpat office covers the area from La Linea de Concepción (near Gibraltar) to Estepona, Elviria (east of Marbella) to Fuengirola, and inland to Alhaurín and Coin. Transforming homes… from the ground up For over 20 years, Korsch has created stunning custom-made designs in carpentry for its discerning and ever-growing clientele. A skilled and expert team that prides itself on German professionalism and excellence, this Elviria-based carpentry workshop is now introducing a spectacular range of quality hardwood flooring to the Coast. The beauty and glamour of hardwood flooring can be seen in any interior design magazine but, as Felix Korsch asks, “in a region obsessed with marble flooring, should we change?” The fact, he says, is that hardwood floors keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. “And, if that isn’t enough, hardwood floors are easier to maintain, more hygienic and durable, good for the environment and, in some cases, if you end up selling your home, you can take the floor with you!” As the exclusive Spanish agents of Germany’s Kohler hardwood flooring, Korsch is taking its superior craftsmanship in kitchen cabinetry and all domestic and commercial carpentry to another level, using only the finest woods and representing this world-renowned brand. The Big Lift

Gruelling challenge in honour of fallen comrades Retired RAF Chinook helicopter crewman Ben Greer is in the midst of a 700-kilometre walk with 100 kilograms on his back, a fund-raising and awareness initiative in honour of British servicemen and women who have lost their lives in the current Afghanistan conflict. “I completed six tours of Afghanistan between 2006 and 2010,” says 33-year-old Ben, “and had the pleasure of serving alongside some of the bravest young people I have ever met. As a Chinook crewman, our main job was to provide casualty evacuation from the frontline and, whilst many were successful, the memory of those dead on arrival, or who went on

to die, has not and will not leave me. They have paid the price whilst I continue to live in comfort and their sacrifice must not be taken for granted. This is why I am walking a mile for every one of them while carrying the weight of a combat soldier on my back.” The five beneficiary charities are SSAFA, Help For Heroes, RAF Benevolent Fund, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. 5 1 - 2 -3. Amber Chill. As any self-respecting Australian will assure all and sundry, beer must be kept suitable chilled at all times, even when being downed quickly. The stubby holder is a staple at barbecues from Sydney to Perth, but not everyone is convinced the foam cylinder is the only option: designer Curt Peters, for example, who has created the Chill Puck, a small, hockey puck-shaped disc that fits on the underside of a can. One of its added advantages is that the feet on the bottom keep condensation from dripping all the way down, so it also functions as a coaster. www.chillpuck.com 4 - 5. Contemporary Classic. Shortly after founding a cutler’s workshop in 1884, Karl Elsener began developing the “Original Swiss Army Knife” – one of the first commercially produced multi-tools. The latest addition to the Swiss Knife collection, produced by independent family company Victorinox, is a bike tool, consisting of an impact-proof plastic case, L-wrench, set of plastic tire levers, selection of eight commonly-used bits and stainless steel adapter. www.victorinox.com 6. Musical Adventure. Comprising high-quality carbon fibre, flax fabric and bio-derived resins, the Alpaca has been designed as a “go-anywhere adventure guitar” that withstands the elements. This rugged combination of materials – hand-made in Vermont – produces a lightweight and strong instrument that can handle dirt, water, bumps and bruises, and features a “brilliant resonant sound”. An embedded daisy chain on the back provides a strong universal attachment to outdoor gear. www.alpacaguitar.com

4 1. Elegant Celebration. Developed by US interior designer Brad Ford, the Bulleit Frontier Whiskey Woody-Tailgate Trailer was one of the items included in the most recent Neiman Marcus fantasy gift guide for the person who has everything – the ultimate ”gadget”. It features sleek leather furnishings and details from Moore & Giles, rich wood finishings (hand-crafted from reclaimed Bulleit Bourbon casks), elegant glassware and a top-notch entertainment system, including a flat-screen TV, Blu-ray Disc player and state-of-the-art sound system. Two limited-edition trailers are available ($150,000 each) and 10 per cent of the proceeds benefit The Foundation for AIDS Research (www.amfar.org). www.diageo.com / www.neumanmarcus.com 2 - 3 - 4. Secure Connection. For those who make a habit of misplacing their mobile phone or wallet, help is at hand. The SmartWallit is an accessory that can be slipped into a wallet and uses integrated Bluetooth 4.0 hardware to make a wireless bridge with your phone, after the accompanying app is installed. The phone beeps as a reminder if you leave your wallet at home, and vice versa if you’ve headed out without your phone. The SmartWallit offers a range of up to 30 metres. www.smartwallitt.com 5. Beach Comfort. Described as the “only complete folding chair-lounger on wheels”, the LoungePac is a dream come true for those who like to mark out their spot on the beach – and not move (at least until the amount of beer consumed makes a comfort visit indispensable). The 10-kilogram chair can be transported like a luggage case on wheels and folded out in about 10 seconds, and comes with a 360-degree umbrella mount, removable tote bag, thermal coolers (large enough to hold wine bottles), speakers and removable leg support. www.loungepac.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Letting a stubble grow – even a fuller beard – might be fashionable at the moment but not all men (or their partners!) want to go down the facial hair route, even when travelling makes shaving particularly burdensome. With a USB power source that conveniently plugs into a computer, the launch of the lightweight ShaveTech means the days of packing a bulky electrical shaver and charger are over. The shaver plugs into any USB port (including in the car) and a single full charge lasts for 30 minutes of shaving. www.shavetrech.com 5 - 6 - 7. Innovative Protection. With so many sports having different design and safety standards, the active among us who enjoy multiple pursuits can incur considerable costs on helmet protection. Contemporary showcase OF VENERABLE ARTISTIC TRADITIONS

Lladró is moving forward on a new aesthetic path with a series of evolutionary creative projects launched in conjunction with the Spanish porcelain figurine brand’s 60th anniversary celebrations. Original objects by Lladró Atelier, including the Dazzle Collection, new Guests by Gary Baseman, a multi-colour version of Naturofantastic and a new line of lighting were just some of the latest projects showcased at Maison et Objet in Paris. The Dazzle Collection is a series of Lladró pieces with a new decorative approach inspired by the camouflage technique and based on a complex pattern of

28

geometric shapes. As Lladró explains, “Through the contrast of black and white and the enriching confusion of the lines interrupting and intersecting each other, this artistic exercise creates a new image of Lladró’s existing pieces that acquire greater energy and a renewed capacity to express sensations.” In addition, two new Guests decorated by American artist Gary Baseman join The Guest collection, an ongoing project in which the brand invites cuttingedge artists from around the world to give a distinctive personality to an original porcelain character conceived by Jaime Hayon.

For the “l’art de la table” line, Lladró is showcasing new additions to its elegant Naturofantastic dinner service collection, a series that includes practical and original objects “combining fantasy and exuberant vegetal forms”. The brand’s current focus on lighting also “takes a bold step forward”, with the unveiling of a new chandelier concept and a series of table lamps that combine beauty and functionality, while preserving the decorative traditions of Lladró’s famous figurines. www.lladro.com

Evocative Images from Getty With a collection of over 90 million photos, the Getty Images Gallery is the world’s largest commercial photography archive. Now, a selection from that historical and valuable treasure trove of imagery – including vintage prints dating from the late 19th century – is on display in London. The “Best of Archive” exhibition runs from 1 May to 1 June at the Getty Images Gallery in central London (close to Oxford Circus). In addition to several of the archive’s most iconic and popular images, the exhibition will also feature lesser-seen work by archive photographers including Bert Hardy and Eugene Robert Richee, with estate-stamped and signed prints from Ernst Haas and Slim Aarons. The photographic content ranges from reportage and social documentary to fashion and portraiture, cultural commentary and architectural studies.

Each of the images is said to “illustrate an engagement with the world – a face from a troubled time looking you in the eye, or a moment of joy caught forever dancing. Many were designed to be part of a series, but away from this context they are able to stand alone as a visually arresting image in their own right.” The exhibition will also showcase rarely seen original contact sheets, illustrating the working methods of the photographer or editor and “revealing the detailed photography processes that have been lost to the digital age”. (Only 0.1 per cent of the Gallery’s 90 million images are digitalised.)

According to gallery director Louise Garczewska, “To truly bring to light the ‘Best of Archive’, we would have needed to take over the entire length of Eastcastle Street, so instead we have filled our corner with a small showcase of the world’s finest photography. We are delighted that this collection will give our visitors a flavour of the quality and scale of the archive.” Opening hours: Monday-Friday, 10am-5.30pm; Saturday, 12pm-5.30pm (admission free). Just one year after buying his first digital camera, 21-year-old Vietnamese photographer Hoang Hiep Nguyen has won the overall “Open Photographer of the Year” prize in the Sony World Photography Awards. Hanoi-based Hoang Hiep Nguyen’s winning image of a young girl in a storm beat nearly 55,000 entries from around the world in a competition that sought to find the single best image taken by an amateur photographer or photography enthusiast. “Nguyen’s picture is the standout image of the Open competition,” said presiding chair of judges Damien Demolder (editor of Amateur Photographer magazine in the UK), “with its intense romantic atmosphere and its sense of mystical fantasy. It is a delightful image that really sums up the amazing level of creativity and skill that today’s amateur photographers are capable of, and a supremely worthy winner of this globally prestigious competition.

Arts and Culture (Open) – Gilbert Yu (Hong Kong)

“Amateurs constantly amaze me, not only with their determination, their passion and their internal drive, but also with the astonishing quality they are capable of achieving. They can be extraordinarily creative, and more than capable of working to their own brief to turn a wonderful idea or moment into a beautiful photograph. In so many ways there are heftier chunks of real life and soul in amateur images than there are in the professional categories – because amateurs do it for the love of taking pictures. And the shortlist and winners for this year’s Open competition demonstrates that perfectly.” Nguyen’s winning entry, and those of the other category winners (Open, Youth and 3D), will be exhibited at Somerset House in London until 12 May as part of the 2013 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, as well as being published in the 2013 edition of the Sony World Photography Awards book (www.worldphoto.org) HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Design Recognition FOR UK GOVERNMENT

State bureaucracies are not usually celebrated for being in the vanguard of contemporary design but the UK Government has – perhaps surprisingly – triumphed in the 2013 Design Museum Awards. The website GOV.UK was judged the overall winner of the Design of the Year Award 2013, with the jury praising it for “its well thought out yet understated design, making the user experience faster and easier”. Regarded as one of the leading government websites in the world, the Government Dig-

34

ital Service-designed GOV.UK combines all of the UK government’s websites into a single domain. The other six category winners included the renovation and re-imagining of a faded 1960s tower block in Paris; a landmark documentary on fashion icon Diana Vreeland; a re-invention of the wheel in the form of a unique folding wheel that can be applied to bicycles and wheelchairs; and a chair constructed using the latest computer technology. www.designmuseum.org

Al Fresco Sophistication Outdoor living is becoming more important to the home than ever before, particularly in Spain. The terrace and/or garden is now seen as an extension to the interior of a home, with new contemporary style houses becoming more open plan and offering floor-toceiling views out to the exterior. Contemporary living is all about making the most of every aspect of your living space and enjoying both the inside and outside of your home.

Summer’s Trends

This summer the trend in outdoor furniture is a continuation from 2012 in terms of using lightweight, practical materials, but this year there is a distinct lean towards neutral natural colours, particularly creams, greens and browns. These earthy colours blend in perfectly with the natural surroundings of a garden and offer a sophisticated and timeless look. Deckchairs and sunbeds have gained straight clean lines and are now much less cumbersome, with featherweight frames making them easily portable. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

With the whole Ibiza-style revival upon us, lounging in suspended hammocks and chairs is also becoming more popular. Natural materials such as cork, raffia, recycled wood and rope have become more prominent this year, providing a rustic, natural feel. There are many large luxurious sunbeds on the market that accommodate a small group of people offering shade overhead and privacy.

www.ksrlighting.com Accessories and Lighting

Gone are the days of garden gnomes but there is nothing wrong with a few accessories: for example, large statues are increasingly popular additions to gardens, providing an artistic feature for the space. For walls, Serastone has come up with an innovative idea to display plants “vertically”. Serastone tiles can be clicked into place as a façade over plant containers and, with lighting added, can give a very contemporary effect. Outdoor lighting is key when setting a mood, whether you want to make your garden or terrace a tranquil or romantic retreat or, alternatively, a funky lively

42

area for entertaining. Wall sconces are a classic way to add general lighting, bringing architectural details to life and giving your home a luxurious touch. Free-standing lamps can light up shrubbery or a water feature beautifully, creating a cosy ambience. Lighting up a pool is great for safety and can make it an attractive feature at night. There are many different coloured lights to choose from to suit your mood and, when lit up through water, they really give the wow-factor.

Pools and Decking

Swimming pools now come in all shapes and sizes, with new durable materials available to last longer and reduce maintenance. Pebbletec, a natural product (supplied by Atlas Pools), is slip-resistant and ecologically sound. It refracts light as it passes through the water, reflecting from the pebble surface and deepening the shades within the pool to provide depth and a natural look. As there are no tiles, there is no re-grouting to be carried out or de-lamination associated with fibreglass pools. Updating your pool is a fantastic way to spruce up the outdoor area and add value to your home while, at the same time, reducing your maintenance. For decking, there are many alternative materials these days to wood, which can warp and become damaged after several years. One extremely contemporary look for an outdoor living space is to have continuous decking that doesn’t just stop around the pool but carries on through to the entertaining area to mould a split-level seating area.

Gunni & Trentino now have a material for decking that does not chip, crack or rot and will not be attacked by termites or lignivoros fungal. It is resistant to water, frost and inclement weather and can handle sudden temperature changes – if the placement indications are respected. It is usable on both sides, smoothed or ruled, according to aesthetic needs, and both surface finishes are non-slip, even in the wet. It requires no treatment to

be protected against harsh climatic conditions and does not blacken like most conventional woods. Another material is Techwoodn, which is made from reclaimed wood and recycled plastic. It looks and feels like natural timber but requires none of the maintenance of traditional timbers. You will not need to paint or stain the product, and its range comes in six contemporary colours.

O u t d oo r L i v i n g > Barbecues and Heaters

www.pias-chimeneas.com

Outdoor living cannot be complete without a barbecue and an outdoor heater for those not so warm evenings when you still want to be enjoying the outside. From full-size propane and natural gas grills to portable propane and charcoal models, there is a barbecue for everyone. Weber is one of the most well-known names in the gas grill industry, with many years under their belt and grills that are built to last – and nearly all of their grills are available in black or stainless finishes. All Weber gas grills have stainless steel bars to flavour the food, electronic ignition, stainless steel cooking grates and a double-lined hood which holds in heat and protects the hood from discolouration. The bars are placed directly below the cooking grates and shield the burners from grease and debris while cooking; and are perfectly angled to let the juices run down and away from the burners while creating flavourful smoke without lots of flare-ups. There are now heaters that not only provide warmth but are also aesthetically attractive. Gone are the days where the only heater on offer looked like some ugly industrial installation on your patio or terrace: now heaters could be mistaken for designer lamps. Award-winning Kindle Living has come up with a product that offers warmth, light and mood. As the trend is moving towards merging the indoors into the outdoor arena, the Kindle lamp does just that by having the appearance of an indoor table lamp that serves perfectly outside on a patio, for example, as a beautiful heater.

O u t d oo r L i v i n g > Relaxing in the Shade

The sun can become very intense in Spain, particularly during the summer months, so a shaded area is extremely important in a garden. Parasols are an economical solution but are not always practical when entertaining a large group, which is why shade sails, open tents and canopies are becoming increasingly popular. Safara tents are made of a waterproof material with multi-directional elasticity so that they can be stretched into a spectacular form. The sides of the tents can move up or down, offering an array of different shapes, and can be tied around trees, rocks or walls and be installed with or without poles. Shade sails are versatile and can be directly attached to exterior walls or patio columns. In addition, they can be supported by timber posts or steel columns secured in concrete footings, and can be taken down seasonally as required. Shade sails offer a versatile non-intrusive alternative to shade overhead that looks extremely elegant and can be used not only in a garden or on a terrace but also as a roof over a car port.

Tableware Chic >

Marcel Wanders, an independent industrial designer who graduated with distinction from the School of Arts Arnhem in The Netherlands, has really put his stamp on dinnerware on a global scale. His playful attitude to design has made his pieces iconic, never failing to surprise us. One of the founders of Moooi and a shareholder in B&B Italia, Wanders has worked with the likes of Alessi and KLM World Business Class, to name but a few, to create jaw-dropping table and cookware. Marcel Wanders-designed “Dressed” collection: www.alessi.com

Mixing It Up The advent of globalisation has led to more significance being placed on regional and cultural identities – which has never been so prominent in decoration. East very often meets West, with Asian arts and crafts inspiring living room and bedroom design accessories that feature classic Asian colours such as China red, black and gold in combinations of shiny and matt surfaces. Tableware these days comes in contrasting forms, colours and materials, creating dramatic harmonies. The simplest of designs and colours can be just as striking as floral, patterned Rococo designs so it all depends on taste. On a white tablecloth, warm hues such as brown and autumnal colours convey

50

a harmonious atmosphere but gold, black and white are also dominant colours and look striking and sophisticated when combined together. White continues to be the primary colour in the field of crockery and porcelain, with a few colourful accents. Abandon the idea of just owning one classic white dinner set: mix it up a bit with different looks to create your own individual style. A plain tablecloth splashed with colour from bold, patterned crockery is very “now” and makes dining more fun, so don’t shy away from floral-patterned dinnerware as it has made a comeback – your grandmother would be proud!

Based on an earlier collection of one-off pieces, the new commercial range for Italian brand Seletti is intended to highlight the combination of Western and Eastern production. The pieces are divided between East and West with a coloured line marking the boundary between the two styles and, ironically at the same time, strengthening their union. www.seletti.it

TOMORROW’S INTERIORS… IN MILAN Cutting-edge creativity was once again showcased in Milan when the annual Salone Internazionale del Mobile featured more than 2,500 Italian and foreign exhibitors. “Interiors of tomorrow” provided the leitmotif for this 52nd edition of the Salone, with French architect Jean Nouvel’s seminal installation “Project: office for living”, at SaloneUfficio, highlighting five unique and singular work scenarios that illustrated the principle that “a working environment has to be able to transmit creativity, inspiration and enjoyment”. Also held in conjunction with the show (www.cosmit.it) were the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition and SaloneSatellite, and the biennial Euroluce/International Lighting Exhibition and SaloneUfficio. According to figures released by the organisers, a total of 324,093 visitors attended the week-long exhibition – 285,698 of them from within the sector – with 160 different countries accounting for 68 per cent of total presences (compared with 63 per cent at the 2011 edition, when the Euroluce and SaloneUfficio were last held). There was a major influx of visitors from throughout the world: Asian, US, South American and African countries, and strong interest from countries within the Russian area, as well as a considerable number of delegations of Chinese constructors and American architects. “The Salone del Mobile has yet again proved itself to be the most effective promotional tool for creative excellence, a natural coming together of business and design, and an unparalleled platform for our tremendous expertise,” said Cosmit president Claudio Luti. “There was an extremely positive atmosphere during the fair, testament to the fact that, even during these tough times, innovation, design and communication are solid investment levers. The exhibiting companies made huge efforts and significant investments in order to present themselves in the best possible light, attracting the attention of international players. The numbers confirm the fact that the fair is a vehicle that enables its exhibitors to make the most of very real business opportunities with extremely high end operators.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Le Méridien

ARTISTIC REFINEMENT IN THE HEART OF BARCELONA When guests arrive at the Le Méridien on Barcelona’s iconic Las Ramblas boulevard, one of the elements they come across is “Arrival Art Work”, created exclusively for the hotel by Joan Fontcuberta. This sets the scene of a culturally refined and stimulating ambience that, in the words of the hotel, “inspires participants to celebrate the beauty of the moment”. Carpets throughout the hotel are imprinted with a map of Eixample (a district bordering Barcelona’s old city), in different colours and sizes for the rooms, lounges and public areas, the reception area is decorated with contemporary art collections and even the keys are designer-made – and can be kept as souvenirs by clients.

62

The work of sculptor and artist Jaume Amigó is incorporated into the design of the rooms (with all the suites featuring his paintings), and the terraces feature rock pieces representing “Celebration of the Birds” and, on the main hotel staircase, the 25-metre “Sopa de Gaudi”. Interior designer Isabel López-Vilalta is responsible for the new look of rooms on the seventh, eighth and ninth floors, creating a fusion between the hotel’s history and surroundings, in the vanguard of local design – also highlighted by a commitment to sustainability with the use of recycled timber and environmentally friendly brands.

Vibrant City Hub Le Méridien’s setting in Barcelona’s artistic and commercial hub, on the famous avenue of leisure and entertainment, is close to the bustling Plaza Cataluña and within convenient access of the city’s main attractions, including the harbour, Barri Gotic (Gothic Quarter), El Liceo Opera Theatre, Sagrada Familia, museums, restaurants and bars. The hotel comprises 233 luxurious guest rooms and suites offering chic comfort and views over the Las Ramblas (aka La Rambla), with plush beds, plasma screen televisions with a wide selection of international channels, and sound-proofed windows to “ensure the party stays outsider”. Spacious bathrooms feature frosted, beautifully etched glass chambers with elegant details.

Expansive suites on the top floor have stunning views of the cityscape, while large private terraces provide elegant places for relaxation and entertainment. High-speed internet access is available in every guest room. Dining and Business The hotel’s Cent Onze restaurant is an innovative gastronomic option that combines the best of French tradition and Catalan creativity. An open, cosmopolitan space with direct access to Las Ramblas accentuates the sophisticated and cosy atmosphere. The experienced chef has created a menu that is both

well-balanced and intriguing, and the kitchens are alive with the vibrant colours and fresh flavours of the Boquería market. Ingredients of the highest quality are “transformed into ephemeral works of art… haute cuisine made accessible”. Cocktails and imaginative snacks can be enjoyed throughout the day at Cent Onze’s sculpted bar, with its versatile interior design creating a harmonious extension of the restaurant. As one of Europe’s key commercial cities, the hotel is well placed for business travellers, a brief ride from the Trade Fair and Convention Centre (by metro, bus or taxi), and offers its own conference centre equipped with the latest technology, including complimentary Wi-Fi access, and capacity to host meetings of up to 240 people. There are also 10 guest rooms that can be converted into breakout rooms, as well as a contemporary banqueting hall for 140 guests.

Fuerte Marbella

LUXURY IN AN EXCLUSIVE SPACE

Renovation work at Fuerte Hotel’s Marbella establishment was completed in April with the completion of an “Exclusive Floor”. The hotel’s objective with this new luxury concept is to offer guests more personalised service, as well as a wide range of exclusive services. These include a continental breakfast service served in the room, a coffee break from 8am to 10pm, fresh fruit, a welcome bottle of cava and a late check-out service (at no extra cost). The “Exclusive Floor” includes the hotel’s best 18 rooms, facing the sea and “with magnificent views, greater privacy and many more comforts”, says manager María Antúnez. Meanwhile, with the re-opening of Fuerte Estepona in April, the hotel group had six establishments operating at the end of April.

66

Grazalema and Conil opened in February and Miramar (Marbella) in March, while Marbella and Calaceite (between Nerja and Torrox) remain open all year-round. In April, Fuerte Conil-Costa Luz received the “Red Star” award from one of Germany’s leading tour operators, ITS, based on customer satisfaction reports gathered over the past year. Earlier in the year, the hotel was honoured with the TopHotel 2013 award presented by HolidayCheck. TRIP FILE Fuerte Hoteles www.fuertehoteles.com

Secret House The owners of this land located in Shuwaikh, to the north-east of Kuwait City, are a young couple and their three children, who have a close relationship with European and American culture. Aware of the potential of a site located in a prime location overlooking the “skyline” of the city and concerned about the limitations of his former residence, he decided to build another house that would improve their life quality, placing it on the same site as the old.

68

Aesthetic Concept The old house did not meet the aesthetic desires and needs of the client’s programme, so Secret House was planned as an expression of current conditions while, in turn, also being a space capable of accommodating the client’s future desires. Therefore, Secret House is poised to solve these needs, enhancing intimacy and the concept of internal transparency.

IN KUWAIT The new house is closed to the outside and is extremely visible and well communicated with the garden, giving the pool a major role. AGI architects devised a house that looked inwards and, by achieving the highest levels, it became a viewpoint to the city “skyline”. The challenge for AGI architects has been to devise a home-garden: intimate and introspective, focusing on life inside the outside.

MAY JUNE 3

H&L 27 Property Showcase Gunni.indd 68

07/05/13 19:23

Family Unity The house develops on different levels, with different degrees of intimacy being achieved. On the ground floor there is a garden, pool and the main areas where most “public” activities take place. Entering the house is the main garden, on an upper level to the street to ensure privacy. Once inside there are two areas: a guest meeting room, as an independent hall, and a family meeting room, which connects to the pool and central garden. This area

works as an open space, where the dining room and open kitchen engage in a dialogue and reinforce the concept of family life. The first floor has been developed with more intimate spaces, for a private home. The master bedroom has a superb location, enjoying views from the main façade. The children’s rooms are raised above the garden, with each unit respecting individual independence to preserve family unity. As a meeting space between the different rooms,

a lounge extends outwards to a private and secluded backyard, protected from the views of the central garden. From this level, and by a staircase facing the courtyard, you can reach the second floor, home to the most exclusive areas, with a gym/massage room, lounge and large covered terrace opens onto the main façade. The panoramic terrace is located on the roof and allows a closer relationship with the city and the sea. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Exclusive Needs In the urban area of Kuwait, most of the city consists of isolated single-family homes, a clear example of “Sprawl-City”. To adapt to the desert climate, the distances between the built volumes are minimal, resulting in shaded spaces between houses. These spaces, which work as passive temperature controllers, also generate façades with little privacy and limited views. This leads to increased difficulty in creating areas with their own personality. Given these circumstances, Secret House is focused as a home to express its own needs. The architects’ goal was to make the volume appear as a solid block, permeable but not transparent, private and friendly. Physical “filters” can be seen in different degrees to prevent passage or views, leading to the expansive opening of the upper terrace, where you

70

can see through the entire house. From the inside, these filters become volumes that open onto rooms that spill from a dominant height, creating invisible barriers. In seeking an understanding between the family’s Islamic culture and the Western lifestyle, overlapping concepts have been created to achieve a harmonious final result. International Focus Spain and Kuwait-based practice AGi architects was founded in 2006 with a noticeable international character and a multi-disciplinary focus. It offers a professional service emphasising quality, creativity and exclusive design. At present, the studio has offices in Kuwait and Madrid. Recent acknowledgements for AGi architects’ work include three Middle East Architect Awards 2012,

two mentions at the MIPIM Architectural Review Future Projects Awards 2012, two consecutive WAF prizes (2011 and 2010 editions) and various awards granted in the last editions of Cityscape Awards and International Property Awards. Gunni & Trentino has collaborated with the Secret House interior design project by AGi architects, making special pieces designed by AGi and providing both the interior and exterior furniture, accessories, lighting, flooring and tilings – and everything needed to make the interior design project proposed by AGi architects a reality. Gunni & Trentino is the leading Spanish company in the field of highend decoration, with over 40 years of experience providing customers with all items required for interior remodelling or building a home or project, with a wide range of products and brands.

Garden Landscape >

Enjoying your gardens to the full in May-June BY CLODAGH AND DICK HANDSCOMBE

The Opportunity With April showers now passed, the climate during May and June is normally warm and dry. Just the right weather for living comfortably outdoors for most of the day. So do use your garden to the full before the uncomfortable hot suns and southerly winds of June and July arrive. Sit out, take siestas in the herb-perfumed air, make the best of a low-maintenance period, eat all meals outdoors and cook most of them there as well – and, of course, start to use the warming-up pool daily. New Colour Gardens are colouring up, with the benefits of a thorough winter cut-back and clean-up now becoming clear as plant after plant springs into flower. Many, such as bougainvilleas, hibiscus, lantanas and leonotis, will of course continue to flower for the rest of the year, well beyond the mass spring flowering of roses.

72

Strategic Views Ponds in peaceful corners of gardens brighten up with spring flowering marsh plants, and water lilies leaf up to start lowering during June. So much changes week by week that a regular walk around the garden, and sitting for a rest on strategically placed seats for the best views across the garden, can be both stimulating and satisfying. Luckily, apart from dealing with dying back spring bulbs and some dead-heading, there is not much work to do in the flower garden, although there is in the vegetable garden at this time of year. Covered Terrace Covered terraces with plenty of plants that enjoy shade will also brighten up and become regular places to eat – as well as in the shade under spreading trees. Our green and colourful terrace was recently well used for a paella party for 12 – yes, an extended table for this number just fits in. (The par-

ty celebrated Dick’s 76th birthday and the launch of his latest Amazon Kindle booklet, “Your Personal Guide to making Authentic Valencian Paellas”.) Outdoor Cooking We love cooking and eating outdoors but stopped barbecuing many years ago, preferring to cook with a Mexican oven, tagines and, in recent years, a solar cooker constructed with a kit from www.alsol.com. Many dishes can be cooked slowly on the latter, with the advantage that they can be left for several hours without fear of burning while one gets on with other things. Put on a casserole mid-morning and it will be ready for lunch. Summer Salad Vegetables We mentioned growing vegetables earlier. Whether you have a large vegetable plot or just a spare couple of metres of terrace space it’s not too late to buy plantlets or sow seeds for growing summer salad crops. Recognising that the sun will soon be burning leaf vegetables, plant them in a semi-shaded spot or under a large umbrella or shade. Even fruit vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers don’t need to be in full sun all day long. The growing table now in a corner of the garden was originally part of our experimental “allotment in the sky”, in which we grew over 20 vegetables through two summers – indeed, all year round – on a north-facing, three-metre, first-floor terrace. This was to demonstrate what can be grown easily by apartment dwellers in order to illustrate our book “Apartment Gardening Mediterranean Style”.

Healthy Fruit A well-planted garden will also include a selection of fruit trees with a variety of harvest times all year round but including delicious early peaches and nectarines in June. Unfortunately, most pest problems in the garden are likely to be with fruit trees rather than with vegetables or flowering plants. We discuss this fully in “Growing Healthy Fruit in Spain”… our solution is a mixed monthly spray with a diluted ecological solution of neem oil and propolis in water. Many garden centres stock a neem oil product these days and propolis, a byproduct of bee hives, will be found in many honey and heath shops. From day one in Spain we have gardened ecologically to maintain an environment healthy to the family, visiting friends, pets and wild life. Naturally, to gain maximum benefit, one needs to persuade neighbours to do likewise. But why not? Most of us probably came to Spain for a healthy open-air lifestyle so why risk using chemical products and creating an atmosphere similar to that in some Almería greenhouses? If ants start to cause a problem just dust them with natural yellow sulphur powder and use the same inexpensive product to dust grape vines and tomato, pepper, cucumber, squash and courgette plants against mildew. So do enjoy the next couple of months of outdoor living. In the next edition we will discuss gardens in the hottest months of the year, July and August.

Holistic gardeners and authors who have lived in Spain for 25 years, Clodagh and Dick Handscombe’s practical books can be obtained from high street and internet bookshops including Bookworld, Carrefour, Santana Books and Amazon UK and Spain. Interview with

Patrick van Dam

DUTCH REAL ESTATE ENTREPRENEUR PATRICK VAN DAM AND MARBELLA ARCHITECT CARLOS LAMAS HAVE JUST PUBLISHED THE FIRST ISSUE OF ESSENZA LIVING MAGAZINE (PRODUCED IN CONJUNCTION WITH HOME & LIFESTYLE).

What originally brought you to the Costa del Sol? I came to the Coast the first time 20 years ago, on holidays with my parents. Shortly after, I bought my first property as an investment in Elviria, which wasn’t agreed by my parents, but fortunately it worked out well thanks to the start of the property market boom. When I graduated with my masters from university in 2001, I came permanently and started Prestige Estates, a real estate agency advising mostly Dutch clients looking for a quality home. What is it you like most about living on the Costa del Sol? Apart from the usual answers such as climate, lifestyle, cosmopolitan character, infrastructure, etc., it’s the diversity of the Coast with the cities of Málaga and Marbella, beaches, outdoor sports and a beautiful inland area, with great places to spend a weekend. The superb connections with the rest of Spain (AVE) and northern Europe (Málaga airport) enable me to travel easily, something I personally value highly. Your favourite place on the Coast? A few places… After 20 years I still don’t feel bored with Marbella Old Town: I love the atmosphere, to wine and dine in one of the many great places to eat. The same as I feel with the revived city of Málaga, and the Costa de la Luz (Tarifa, Zahara, etc.) Tell us about Essenza and what was the inspiration behind it… Essenza is a total design concept for contemporary living in Marbella, founded by myself and Carlos Lamas. We assist a client to source the right plot (or home to demolish) that complies with all regulations and planning, design a high-quality, modern villa (or reform an existing home) to modern standards, and deliver turn-key project management during construction. Additionally, we do interior design, landscaping and (if it’s an investment project) facilitate the marketing and sale of the final property. The idea originated from my experience in the local property market. Despite the large stock of properties for sale, I noticed a short supply of quality, modern villas in the most desirable (beach) locations. Carlos was already filling this gap by building exceptional contemporary villas, but in nearly all cases for endusers. We both realised the arrival of a new generation of buyers, often younger, affluent and specific in architectural style and requirements, was just a matter of time, and that good properties were lacking. What inspires you in your work? Creative minds, combined with positivism and energy, inspire me. Being able to travel, and bring new ideas, materials, design and vision to our design and architecture, is enriching and refreshes the often “repetitive production” of style, finishings and the general way of thinking. We aim to be innovative and forward thinking. How did you meet Carlos Lamas? We met 12 years ago, and have been friends ever since. Only over the past two years have both our career directions coincided, as we realised we were very complementary to each other and shared the same vision and philosophy.

74

What future trends do you envisage in the industry? Despite the difficult, challenging times, I see many initiatives, from both the private and public sector, to improve the infrastructure, security and start-ups of new businesses. Being able to anticipate and adapt to the continuous changing market will create opportunities, while others who stay behind will leave the market. The last year has shown a substantial increase in transactions for high-end real estate. That demonstrates this segment is moving, and buyers are considering Marbella quality property – in the right locations – as a safe investment. And, due to the restricted land for building, and all top locations already being built, a growing market for renovations and re-development will continue. What do you like to do in your spare time? Spending time with my family (daughter of two), sports, travel and enjoying the food in one of our favourite restaurants or tapas bars. If you could arrange a dinner party with two people of your choice in your industry, who would they be? Stefan Antoni, a great, inspiring architect from South Africa with an amazing portfolio of modern villas. Second, Piet Boon, a respected, interior designer from my home country Holland, whose style is very appealing to me personally, and he successfully managed to create an “international brand” of his works. Any special goal in life that you have not fulfilled yet? Building my own, contemporary house, from scratch. With all the great projects I’m involved in, I get very excited thinking about building my own house, using the experience, knowledge and ideas I am gathering every single day. It would be great to pursue this dream one day. www.prestige-estates.com www.essenzaliving.com

Chowka

A EUROPEAN TWIST ON INDIAN GASTRONOMY

The charming and very humble head chef, Ravi Deulkhar, has only recently moved to Spain, but what an impact he has already made! Ravi has worked in many prestigious restaurants in the UK, including the Michelin-star Trishna in Marylebone and Rasoi in Chelsea, under the highly-acclaimed chef Vineet Bhatia. Following many years in such esteemed kitchens, Ravi has arrived at Chowka in Marbella to show us how versatile Indian cuisine can be, incorporating the tapas concept into Indian cuisine and offering an exciting and unique dining experience on the Coast. Chowka owner Mr Ram has many restaurants already under his belt, with over 40 years in the business. This new addition to his portfolio is something totally different from his other restaurants but it is one of his most exciting ones. The restaurant was designed by local interior designer Fernando de la Fuente, who has created a contemporary, relaxed and airy ambience which is very inviting. Inside there are large wooden tables, gastro-pub style, with big comfy chairs to make you feel at home. There is a long bar offering a huge array of drinks and, outside, a very pleasant enclosed area where you can dine al fresco or enjoy a cocktail on one of their sofas.

78

The style of dining is extremely healthy, offering fresh food that is light on the stomach but with rounded and satisfying flavours, and avoiding rich, oily or creamy sauces that are often associated with Indian cooking. The idea of this tapas style is to give customers the opportunity of trying more dishes than normal, making it a highly sociable and fun experience – one reason why the restaurant is ideal for parties. The most popular dishes are their soups, which come with a rice cake and a basil chutney, the Dorset crab cake with ginger, garlic and lime, the chilli squid, the seafood biryani and the chocolate cheese samosa with tea mousse, but there are so many other dishes to choose from you are truly spoilt for choice. All dishes can be spiced to your requirements, so you don’t need to be a hardcore curry fan to enjoy the food. Smak by Umami

THE LITTLE RESTAURANT WITH LOTS OF TASTE

The newly-opened boutique restaurant Smak has been a great hit among locals ever since charismatic owner Lee Vahros opened its doors in April, putting his unique stamp on this charming little restaurant situated in Las Brisas (Nueva Andalucía), and previously known as Nermans. “Smak” means taste in Swedish and it surely lives up to its name, offering a varied menu of international dishes with an emphasis on Scandinavian cuisine. Lee has run many restaurants over the years and currently operates the very successful Umami in San Pedro de Alcántara. He has always attracted a loyal international clientele due to the relaxed ambience he creates and the consistent level of high-quality cooking. Smak is cleverly designed to make you feel extremely at home, with Lee’s signature eclectic decorative style featuring alluring clashes of pinks and purples, lampshades in various styles and shapes, shelves packed with wine bottles and cookbooks, and walls adorned with boldly coloured paintings. The layout of Smak makes it a perfect venue for parties, with little enclaves to make your dinner party feel like it is almost private. There is also an outside terrace at the rear of the restaurant surrounded by established shrubbery that is delicately lit up at night to give a truly magical feel. The menu is unfussy, with each dish presented beautifully and packed full of flavour to show off chef Pepe’s mastery over his culinary work. From the south

80

of Sweden, Pepe has worked with Lee in the past so they have a very great working relationship. Even though Smak focuses a lot on fish, a number of tasty meat dishes have been added to the menu as they now have a lava stone grill to give the meat a deep and distinctive taste. The menu offers the likes of North Sea cod with horseradish, cheese pie with Swedish cheese and trout roe, beef tartare with beetroot and capers, toast Skagen, a mini tuna burger, wild mushrooms on toast with port wine, Turkish lamb spring roll and Sultan’s figs with walnuts, honey and vanilla ice cream – which is apparently also known as the edible orgasm! Lee has a passion for wines and has a very interesting collection, which can be sold separately for takeaway if desired. His prices are very reasonable so it is well worth paying Smak a visit if you are holding a dinner party and looking for something a little more than the standard supermarket wines. Smak will be holding wine tasting events where bodegas visit the restaurant and present their wines. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 7pm. Urb. Los Naranjos Country Club, Nueva Andalucía. It is highly recommended to reserve: Tel. (+34) 952 815 398 or (+34) 637 558 927. To find out about events at Smak by Umami go to www.restauranteumami.com or their Facebook page.

Rin-Ran Cocktail (serves 4)

Poached Egg & Roasted Hen Broth (serves 4)

Ingredients: For the rin-ran… 500 gr potatoes 100 gr salted cod 1 bay leaf and 5 “ñora” or red capsicum For the sweetbread… 150 gr milk-fed lamb gizzards For the egg… 4 small eggs

Ingredients: 1 hen, 4 eggs, I ham bone 25 gr pancetta or bacon 100 gr red cabbage 100 gr cabbage 1 potato and 1 carrot chopped chive and parsley salt, pepper and chickpeas

For the rin-ran, cook all the ingredients together until the potatoes are cooked. Remove from the heat, pass through a masher and add a pinch of salt. For the sweetbread, boil a saucepan of salted water, add the gizzards for two minutes then remove them and cook them in a frying pan until golden, with garlic and aromatic herbs. For the egg, boil one litre of water in a saucepan with a few drops of vinegar, let it simmer, poach the eggs for 30 seconds, then remove. In a cocktail glass, place a base of the rin-ran, and add the poached egg and sweetbread to the centre part. Mix the three different ingredients together as you eat them.

Soak the chickpeas for eight hours. Cut the hen into pieces and cook in the oven at 220ºC for half an hour. In a casserole dish place the roasted hen, chickpeas, vegetables, ham, pancetta and bacon. Cover with a lid and cook on minimum heat for three hours. Strain and add salt. Slice the cabbage and red cabbage into fine julienne shreds. Place thin layers of the vegetable mix on the bottom of four soup dishes, and set aside. Boil some of the stock, then add a raw egg and, taking great care so it doesn’t break, move the saucepan away from the heat. After three mi-nutes, remove the egg from the stock with a skimmer. Repeat the process for each egg. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

One thousand new products were savoured by visitors to the 27th edition of the Salón de Gourmets in Madrid (www.gourmets.net), in an exquisite showcase of latest culinary trends and innovations. Celebrating its 20th year as one of the main sections of the Salón – Europe’s premier fair dedicated exclusively to delicatessen products – the “Exposición de Nuevos Products mainly featured wines (including ecological products) and olive oils (the latter highlighted by major improvements in packaging), with a significant increase in the number of companies exhibiting artesanal beers. The three category winners in the Salón de Gourmets new products awards were: innovation, edible flowers crystalised with saffron, presented by La Carrasca, Azafrán de Teruel; presentation, Verde Esmeralda virgin olive oil, displayed by Verde Esmeralda from Úbeda (Jaén); and versatility, salt flakes with algae, exhibited by Porto Muiños, Cerceda, La Coruña. In total, 30,000 products were on show at the fair, which attracted nearly 80,000 industry professionals. Of the 1,188 exhibitors presenting their

wares, the highest number came from Castilla y León, followed by Andalucía. In addition to the new products section, other highlights included the presentation of Estrella de Galicia’s new 1906 Red Vintage beer, also known as La Colorada (the Galician brewer celebrated its centenary in 2006); and several entertaining competitions. Óscar Ávarez Alfonso from Madrid’s 5 Jotas restaurant was judged the best ham cutter (based on speed, clean cuts, best use of the piece and creativity), and Nabil Rezauki (from Ostras Sorlut) became the new Spanish oyster opening champion (36 in five minutes, 37 seconds). In the Revista Club de Gourmets Awards, Diverxo (Madrid) was named the best restaurant and David Muñoz (from the same restaurant) the best chef; and Delishop (Barcelona and Madrid) the best gastronomy delicatessen. A vote by the public chose Queso Payoyo (“mezcla curado”) from Quesería Artesenal de Villaluenga as the best cheese. HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Timeless Elegance >

Urban Allure Watches stopped being mere timepieces eons ago… for dedicated contemporary trend-setters, today they must be a state-of-the-art fashion statement and, in many, cases, a multi-purpose “gadget”.

Golden Times

Limited to 15 pieces, Girard-Perregaux’s 1966 Minute Repeater comes in a 42 millimetre gold case, features 48 jewels and a silvered sunburst dial and includes a sapphire back and brown alligator strap with an 18-carat rose gold ardillon buckle. It is water-resistant up to 30 metres, has a power reserve of 100 hours – and costs a cool €220,000. www.girard-perregaux.com

High-Tech Classic

Three limited-edition Top Gun models were presented at IWC Schaffhausen’s boutique at Harrods before becoming available for purchase this summer. Combining the classic functionality of the traditional Pilot’s Watch with state-of-the-art technology, the new models feature a compact 48-millimetre case made of high-tech ceramic and a titanium crown. www.iwc.com

Artistic Fusion

Originally composed by Armenian-American jazz pianist Avo Uvezian and subsequently made famous by Frank Sinatra, the familiar sounds of “Strangers in the Night” are now being played on 99 limited edition timepieces from Ulysse Nardin. The Stranger emulates a classic music box and plays the 1966 song on the hour or on call. It comes in a rose gold case and incorporates silicium technology for the escapement and anchor of its in-house manufactured UN-690 movement. www.ulysse-nardin.com

Futuristic Style

Inspired by the F-117 Nighthawk stealth aircraft, the HM4 Final Edition from MB&F (just eight pieces and €270,000 each) features angular panels, dark surfaces and high-tech titanium – “fast and menacing”. The case blends titanium for lightweight strength with a sapphire centre section offering a view into the “engine”, while black PCD provides the titanium with its shadowy “cloak of concealment”, without blocking the light that plays off the contrasting matte and highly polished surfaces. www.mbandf.com

Classic Delicacy

Designed to celebrate the spirit of music, Parmigiani Fleurier’s Tonda Woodstock combines classic arts and crafts with contemporary watchmaking techniques. Priced at around €250,000, the timepiece features a delicately-produced wooden dial highlighted by a Gibson guitar overlaying the US Stars and Stripes. The Swiss brand has also created a platinum variation, the Tonda Woodrock, which features the Union Jack flag as a tribute to UK music. www.parmigiani.ch HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Dental Implants

SAFE, MEDICALLY PROVEN… AND CONFIDENCE-ENHANCING

Dr. Martha Laguilavo, of Dental Care in Laguna Village (Estepona), explains the advantages of dental implants

An implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed into the jawbone to hold a replacement tooth or bridge securely in place. It can be used in a variety of situations, whether you need to replace a single missing tooth or several teeth. This can be caused by an accident or dental decay and/ or inflammation of the gums and surrounding tissue. The jawbone will shrink over time with dentures, leaving little support and causing the dentures to become loose; whereas implants are not only used to secure single teeth but can also replace a full denture, or as anchor points securely attach a partial denture or bridge. In all these cases, the patient will be able to eat, talk and laugh just like before – but with more confidence. Tissue-Friendly Material Implants are made of titanium and look like little “screws”. Their diameter varies from 3.3 to 4.8 millimetres and they are between six and 16 millimetres long – about the same size as a natural dental root. A so-called tissue-friendly material, titanium is the most appropriate metal for the construction of implants. It is used frequently in modern medicine (for bone fracture plates, artificial joints and pacemakers, for example), and is completely accepted by the human body. In other words, the body does not reject the strange material. Dentistry has always tried to replace lost teeth as naturally as possible. Within our mouths, nature developed a perfect chewing system that can never be completely replaced by artificial means. However, an implant in the jaw as a pillar for tooth replacement is the closest you can get to a natural dental root. Implants can be used – for both young and older people – if you have good general health and keep your mouth nicely clean, and if the jaw is suited for it. It is not possible to use an implant when the jawbone has shrunk to such a degree that it is too small and/or low to place an implant. In these cases

90

additional techniques are needed to allow the application of an implant. Implantation may also not be a good idea for patients who use certain medication, who smoke a lot or who are not able to keep their natural teeth in good condition. Long-Term Health The procedure is completed in five phases: examination, both medical and dental; implantation, a small surgical operation, usually taking place with local anaesthetic and lasting between 30 and 90 minutes (depending on the number of implants); growing in, taking from six weeks to three months for the implants to grow into the jaw; placement of the implant structure (after the growing in period); and after-care – good mouth hygiene and regular check-ups (every three to six months). Implants will still function perfectly after decades, if properly taken care of. In addition to providing a healthy and beautiful smile, and allowing your face to retain its natural shape, as an alternative to bridgework, implants also eliminate the need to grind down healthy teeth when replacing one or more adjacent teeth. Dental implants are more comfortable than dentures because they are securely anchored – with no slipping or movement. With dental implants, you will never need to cover your mouth when laughing, smiling, or speaking. You can eat your favourite foods without pain or fear of embarrassment – and taste every bite. You will look better, feel better, and live more confidently. Dental Care C.C. Laguna Village (Estepona) Tel. 952 936 552 info@dentalcaremarbella.com www.dentalcaremarbella.com

Medical Minutes

By John Schieszer

John Schieszer is an award-winning journalist and radio broadcaster of The Medical Minute. He can be reached at medicalminutes@gmail.com.

Bring on the Berries

Women who eat at least three servings of blueberries and strawberries per week may have fewer heart attacks. At least that is what a new study with more than 93,000 women has found. Blueberries and strawberries contain high levels of naturally occurring compounds called flavonoids. A specific sub-class of flavonoids, called anthocyanins, may help dilate arteries and counter the build-up of plaque in the arteries. Scientists from the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston and from the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom conducted a prospective study among 93,600 women aged 25 to 42 who were registered with the Nurses’ Health Study II. The women completed questionnaires about their diet every four years for 18 years. During the study, 405 heart attacks occurred. The researchers found that women who ate the most blueberries and strawberries had a 32 per cent reduction in their risk of heart attack compared to women who ate the berries once a month or less, even in women who otherwise ate a diet rich in other fruits and vegetables. The findings were independent of other risk factors, such as age, high blood pressure, family history of heart attack, body mass, exercise, smoking, caffeine or alcohol intake. “We have shown that, even at an early age, eating more of these fruits may reduce risk of a heart attack later in life,” said study investigator Aedín Cassidy, who is with Norwich Medical School of the University of East Anglia. Tea and Diabetes

Drinking tea on a regular basis may help lower a person’s risk of developing diabetes. A new study has found that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is low in countries where consumption of black tea is high. The investigators conducted a mathematical analysis of data from 50 countries and systematically mined information on black (fermented) tea consumption based on 2009 sales data collected by an independent specialist market research company. The researchers also analysed World Health Organization (WHO) data for those same countries on the prevalence of respiratory, infectious, and cardiovascular diseases, as well as cancer and diabetes. They found that Ireland ranked the highest for black tea drinkers, closely followed by the UK and Turkey. At the bottom of the list were South Korea, Brazil, China, Morocco and Mexico, with very low consumption. The researchers found a significant impact for black tea on rates of diabetes, but not on any of the other health indicators studied. The link was confirmed with further statistical analysis, which pointed to a strong linear association between low rates of diabetes in countries where consumption of black tea is high. The investigators caution that what could seem positive at the population level might not work as well at the individual level. However, these findings support previous research. In recent years, a great deal of interest has focused on the health benefits of green tea, which contains simple flavonoids called catechins, thought to have anti-inflammatory properties, noted the authors. The fermentation process, which turns green tea black, induces a range of complex flavonoids, including theaflavins and thearubigins. It is theorised that these flavonoids may provide a host of health benefits.

Potent, agile and sensual… RETURN TO JAGUAR HEARTLAND Jaguar’s sports car pedigree is beyond doubt, but that bloodline had become somewhat diluted in recent years. Now the F-Type has put the famous motoring brand back on the main grid. So much so that it in March it was named the 2013 World Car Design of the Year. Announcing the F-Type as the winner, the advisory panel of design experts said, “The long wheelbase, short overhangs and flared fenders give this car a good stance. The contour in plan view tapered toward the door emphasises the muscular rear fender that houses the driven wheels.

94

“The F-Type exterior maintains Jaguar’s own elegance in its horizontal proportion and rounded surfaces, yet it looks very dynamic. But (we) would like to say the interior design is even more attractive. It is clearly driveroriented, and a grip bar for the passenger is nicely integrated into the big centre console. The seat design is superb, too.” Collecting the award, global brand director Adrian Hallmark commented, “The F-Type is the first full-blooded Jaguar sports car to be launched for more than 50 years. Its architecture and technology are world class, wrapped

MAY JUNE 3

07/05/13 22:04

in an evocative and progressive design that could only be a Jaguar – ‘Callum unfiltered’, as we call it in-house. It is as dynamic yet refined as any Jaguar sports car should be, and is a unique proposition from a performance and price perspective.” The “Callum” he was referring to is director of design Ian Callum, who said of the award-winning model, “The F-Type is a sports car that is true to Jaguar’s design values – beauty of line and purity of form.” Previously, at the model’s launch, Hallmark had noted that Jaguar was a founder member of the sports car segment, with a rich sporting bloodline stretching over 75 years. “And in the F-Type we’ve reignited that flame. The F-Type isn’t designed to be like anyone else’s sports car. It’s a Jaguar sports car – ultra-precise, powerful, sensual and, most of all, it feels alive.”

Power and Balance Representing a return to the company’s heartland – “a two-seater, convertible sports car focused on performance, agility and driver involvement” – the F-Type’s underpinning engineering ethos is centred on Jaguar’s expertise in the use of aluminium. Featuring the most advanced iteration of Jaguar’s rigid and lightweight aluminium architecture, the F-Type has ideally balanced weight distribution that allows its involving rear-wheel drive dynamics to be explored to the full. Utilising extensive Computer Aided Engineering programmes, the attention to detail involved in the F-Type’s creation extended to the development of a new, lighter, aluminium front subframe. In order to maximise the benefits of its advanced structure, the F-Type features all-aluminium double wishbone front and rear suspension and a quickHOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

ratio steering rack for ultimate responsiveness. The aluminium architecture has been optimised to provide the stiffest possible underpinnings for the suspension, with rigidity gains of more than 30 per cent in key areas compared to any other Jaguar application. Three variants are available: F-Type, F-Type S and F-Type V8 S. Each is distinguished by the power output of its supercharged petrol engine, with all engines featuring stop/start technology to maximise efficiency. A new 3.0-litre V6, developed from Jaguar’s 5.0-litre V8, is available in either 340PS or 380PS variants, powering the F-Type and F-Type S, respectively. The V6 models are joined by a newly developed Jaguar V8 engine: producing 495PS and 625Nm of torque in the F-Type V8 S model, it has a torque-to-weight ratio of 375Nm/tonne, accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 300km/h, while emitting 259g/km of CO2. The 380PS V6 F-Type S covers the 0-100km/h sprint in 4.9 seconds and has an electronically limited top speed of 275km/h, with CO2 emissions of 213g/km. The 340PS V6 F-Type accelerates to 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 260km/h, while emitting 209g/km of CO2. The F-Type’s shape, and “eye to the future”, is defined by two “heartlines” forming the front and rear wings. The front of the F-Type features a new interpretation of the bold angular Jaguar grille, from which flows the muscular clamshell bonnet with its signature “power bulge”. The focus on driver involvement and sporting performance is emphasised by the “one plus one” layout of the asymmetric cabin; while, taking inspiration from cockpits of fighter airplanes, the controls are ergonomically grouped by func-

96

tion. Further aeronautical inspiration can be found in the joystick-shaped SportShift selector controlling the eight-speed transmission. As for the driver environment, Ian Callum says, “We wanted the experience of sitting in the F-Type to be exciting. A sports car cockpit should be an intimate place and so we aimed to get a sense of the surfaces falling towards and then wrapping around the driver.” As to be expected of a Jaguar, the F-Type is luxuriously trimmed, although the palette of switchgear colours is deliberately understated and technical “to ensure nothing detracts from the driving environment and experience”. Switches are finished in soft-feel matte black with white markings for maximum legibility, while the highlight accents are satin chrome and dark aluminium. The F-Type is available with three audio systems, two of which come from British experts Meridian. These offer either 10 or 12 loudspeakers with outputs of 380W and 770W, respectively. The model is equipped with a fabric, rather than metal, convertible roof, which not only represents a significant weight saving but also optimises packaging and helps maintain a low centre of gravity for greater agility. The hood itself can be fully raised or lowered in just 12 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h, and Its multi-layer construction includes a thick Thinsulate lining for optimal thermal and sound insulating properties. “We are creating a new generation of Jaguar sports car so it has to be credible from both a performance and design point of view,” says chief engineer (body complete) Mark White. “It has to deliver, has to be a great handling car with a stiff, rigid platform underpinning it and it has to look every inch an icon.”

The Great Gatsby FILM ADAPTION OF CLASSIC TALE

Writer, producer and director Baz Luhrmann has brought a new adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel “The Great Gatsby” to the big screen. The Australian filmmaker combines his distinctive visual, sonic, and storytelling styles in three dimensions, “weaving a Jazz Age cocktail faithful to Fitzgerald’s text and relevant to now”.

Leonardo plays Jay Gatsby, with Tobey Maguire starring as Nick Carraway; Carey Mulligan and Joel Edgerton as Daisy and Tom Buchanan; Isla Fisher and Jason Clarke as Myrtle and George Wilson; and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker. Indian film legend Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Meyer Wolfshiem. Spanish release: 17 May. (Photos courtesy of Warner Bros. Pictures)

INTRICATE ARTWORKS... AND JAMES JOYCE READING

Two Andalucian International Artists members – husband and wife Roger and Dolores Cummiskey – are exhibiting their artworks at the Galería Lucia in Fuengirola until 31 May. Titled “El y Ella”, the exhibition features five of Dolores’ intricate cross-stitch artworks and a selection of Roger’s charcoal drawings including James Joyce and Barack Obama. “It is always a pleasure to display new works from the AIA and this exhibition brings together a bright and exciting selection of images as we move towards summer,” said gallery owner Lena Gran. The AIA was founded nine years ago by professional and dedicated artists from around the world living and working in Andalucía. Also, on 16 June, coinciding with international celebrations to commemorate James Joyce’s Ulysses novel (recounting the hour-by-hour events of one day in Dublin – 16 June 1904), Joyceans in Fuengirola will be taking part in a “Bloomsday Bathe on the Beach” followed by informal readings from Ulysses (in English, Spanish, Swedish and Finnish) and a continental breakfast – “a non-intellectual, fun get-together”. www.rogercummiskey.com / www.aia-artgroup.com

BDFAS Society ART IN THE PARK IN BENAHAVÍS

Members of the Benahavís Decorative and Fine Arts Society will be holding an informal “Art in the Park” event beside the Ermita de la Virgen del Rosario on 22 May. The 18th-century-style chapel is half-hidden in a wooden glade above the Guadalmina river, about five kilometres from the main coastal road towards Benahavís village. “The gorge narrows here and the views are fantastic,” notes the society. “If Turner had known about it, he’d have come here to paint… If you’re not quite in Turneresque mode, try sketching leafy shadows on a wall, a handful of wild flowers, or a friend painting under a big hat. Or just breathe in the fresh air and enjoy the idyllic surroundings.” A bar serving coffee and cool drinks will be set up from 10.30am to 1pm – and tables and chairs, and toilets, are available. The entry fee of €5 includes coffee and cake. www.benahavisdfas.com

The Politician’s Daughter INTRIGUE AND GLAMOUR IN MARBELLA

“The Politician’s Daughter” is the first novel of Marion Leigh, a part-time resident of Marbella who is already working on the follow-up novel in the series about Canadian marine unit investigator Petra Minx. Highly trained, intelligent, determined and, yes, a little foxy as her name suggests, Petra is also very much a multi-layered human being with all the failings that entails. The genre is a classic one, while the settings and situations are thoroughly modern. The plot is well laid out, the tempo pacey and Marion Leigh sets the scene very well, introducing us to glamorous locations such as the French Riviera and Marbella as we meet the various faces and personalities that inhabit this world of wealth and power. It certainly is seductive, and before you know it this fast-paced detective thriller with a difference will have you racing towards the final pages to find out how it all unravels. As for the scenes and boating she describes, Marion Leigh is an experienced yachtswoman and you sense she knows more than a little of what goes on aboard those stunning super yachts. No wonder the feedback from critics, publishers and readers alike has been fantastic. The Politician’s Daughter is available online though the author’s website: www.marionleigh. com, www.amazon.com and www.books4spain.com, and locally at Bookworld España. Starlite Festival SPARKLING SCHEDULE OF CONCERTS FOR SUMMER By Alex George

When I think of festivals, the image my mind conjures is of thousands of muddy, sweaty people in wellington boots jumping up and down in unison, clutched together like sardines in a tin, fighting their way to get to the front of the stage to hear their favourite band blast out a usually un-tuneful, shouty version of their latest hit. So last year when I saw the words “Starlite Festival” inscribed on signposts I initially thought it might be one to miss. But then I saw a list of the diverse artists performing, coupled with the accompaniment of culinary delights, and I was most definitely intrigued. I decided to accommodate my intrigue and went to the debut performance of the month-long festival held at the Auditorio de Marbella at La Cantera. As I journeyed up to the auditorium it became apparent that my previous convictions of “festivals” were to be dispelled as this was something far different than I had ever been to before.

George Benson took to the stage inside the glorious surroundings of the amphitheatre-style auditorium carved into the Marbella landscape. It seemed to me that the relaxed, yet luxurious ambience of the whole event even had an effect on George himself as he effortlessly connected with the audience, amazing us with his unique talent. After rapturous applause everybody left on a high with not a muddy shoe in sight. So to my delight 2013 sees the return of the Starlite Festival in Marbella for another exciting month of music, gastronomy, fashion, art and cinema, running from 23 July to 24 August. After the success of last year’s event with performers including the likes of the aforementioned Benson, Tony Bennett and Simple Minds, the promoters have secured another collection of international stars to dazzle us again. This year Julio Iglesias is to return to the glitzy festival on 3 August, along with headlining act (and Julio’s son) Enrique Iglesias. The “Hero” singer has said he

is excited about the concert because he has never performed at such a small venue in Spain (just 2,500 people will be in the audience), which will bring him closer to his fans. His concert has been confirmed for 17 August. Other confirmed artists are Jamie Cullum on 27 July, Israeli singer Noa on 28 July, Alejandro Sanz on 11 August, Malú on 14 August and Paco de Lucía on 15 August, while Almería-born singer David Bisbal will close the festival on 24 August. I think some of the promoters have been watching ITV’s “The Big Reunion” (which sees former pop acts of the ‘90s reunite to perform again) as another interesting facet of the festival brings together Spain’s major pop singers from the ‘80s and ‘90s, such as Nacha Pop, Hombres G, Tequila, La Union and Tam Tam Go – on 2 August. Guests will also have the chance to sample the glamorous side of Marbella as they can mingle with the jet set and enjoy watching exclusive film premieres every week “al-fresco style”, under the stars, allowing them a one-off opportunity to meet their favourite actors in person. In true Marbella style, there will be several spectacular live fashion shows revealing the latest designs from various well-known designers. As well as unforgettable musical performances, film premieres and fashion shows, the Starlite Festival will also offer a culinary feast through its three restaurants. Plus, art lovers will be able to view exciting exhibitions throughout the summer as the festival provides a unique environment for artists to display their work. Surely, this is what summer in the sun is all about?

LEADING EXPERTS FROM THE WORLDS OF PROPERTY, FINANCE AND INVESTMENT BRING US UP TO DATE WITH LATEST NEWS, LAWS AND INFORMATION OF INTEREST TO EXPATRIATES LIVING OR SPENDING TIME IN SPAIN.

Investment opportunities in Marbella By Bashir Habbal

When Laura Stanbridge, a business woman representing the British Chamber of Commerce, talks about Marbella, defining this city as “a very dynamic expanding place offering a big opportunity for foreigners”, she may not be referring to the 137 nationalities living here together. However, she is definitely talking about a type of land assigned especially for those people interested in investing, far away from the current financial market, which is becoming more insecure and unstable. In May 2010 Marbella Town Hall approved the current PGOU (or “General Plan for Urban Zoning”) and Marbella is now enjoying total security and legal stability, which unfortunately did not exist before – even though this represents a major boost for urban stability for the city and its environment. It is predicted that the number of residents in Marbella will increase by around 40,000, a significant number due to nearly 26,500 new buildings – 9.500 of them built under a subsidised housing scheme. At the same time, Marbella’s prestige is increasing tremendously. Enduring Charm All this because our city is situated in a very individual location, with an attractive microclimate, timeless history, natural beauty and expansive green zones, but especially because of the kind and honest people who base their coexistence on respect, work and consideration for all the people in this city. Additionally, Marbella has two other things in its favour: its charm and its development, two reasons why we can argue that Marbella has a sound future. It is hardly surprising that King Fahd Bin Abdul Asís has chosen Marbella as the place to build his villa, and that British tourists continue to opt for Marbella, as it has their favourite beaches and coastline. Since 1996, Russian citizens have been starting to arrive and now, after US First Lady Michelle Obama’s visit, North Americans are increasingly interested in visiting us. Many cruise ships will soon be arriving in Marbella and we will see their passengers moving around the city shopping, buying souvenirs, eating in our restaurants, etc., and there is no doubt they will return sooner or later and maybe even invest in a second home, so that in the future they can spend their holidays in Marbella or choose to live here the whole year round. They will see first-hand that Marbella is an ideal place to establish a business and a beautiful area in which to live and work. Now is the time to take advantage of the decrease in prices in Spain and especially in Marbella, where it is particularly noticeable. Exclusive Destination Nothing is missing in this town: the best infrastructure, motorways and marinas, near the airport, and of course the internationally famous Puerto Banús, which boasts a huge exclusive shopping area and leisure centre where the biggest and best-known firms and companies are present. Many places to be enjoyed and others waiting to be discovered… Marbella has a large, extremely elegant casino for those who like to try their luck on the tables. For the brave-hearted there is a racing circuit near Ronda, just an hour from Marbella. And, in addition, we must not forget the many nautical

and other traditional sports on the beaches and along the coast. Horse-riding, polo, golf and tennis courts make this town a paradise for practising the sport of your choice. Marbella’s beauty is not only limited to its exquisite sunrises and sunsets, beautiful white houses, orange groves and colourful flowers – or its spectacular views. Just an hour’s drive to the surrounding areas we can appreciate different views, lakes and other unforgettable experiences. Marbella is the town chosen by many civic and cultural organisations to celebrate their events and galas, including the Red Cross and Starlite. Famous personalities such as Antonio Banderas, Maria Bravo, Eva Longoria and Jermaine Jackson offer their support to help raise money for charitable organisations who help the less fortunate. Now is an excellent moment to buy property in Marbella. Prices are down and the new infrastructures being built will undoubtedly boost the tourism industry and thus lead to a rise in prices. Take advantage of the current lower prices and invest in a unique town at this unique moment. Without a doubt you should invest in Marbella and this is the time to do so. Do not hesitate: you will not regret it. Bashir Habbal Legal Tax Consultant AB Consulting Tel. (+34) 952 766 464 bashir.habbal@ab-consulting.net www.ab-consulting.net HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

THE FINAL WORD. SPECIALIST ADVICE >

Uncertainty Continues to Prevail

By Stephen Tiley

News, what news… the merry go round is still in operation and where it will stop for the eurozone and Cyprus, in particular, we are not sure. There is a lot of talk that Cyprus will face a “Greek style” meltdown now that ministers from the European Union and IMF have confirmed that the country must find the additional €5.5 billion euro shortfall itself. The question is how does a country that does not have any money find €5.5 billion? The big issue certainly seems to focus on the original need for funding, which has increased from €17.5 billion to a new figure of €23 billion. We know of course that Cyprus sought to raise around €400 million selling gold but the number is now insignificant in relation to the extra it has to find and until recently (it is the third week of April at the time of writing) there was still some uncertainty linked to the bailout package. Thankfully the German parliament has approved the bailout package, which will now go before the Cypriot parliament! Volatile Market With Portugal raising new concerns over their original bailout terms, after its constitutional court blocked austerity measures, and the Netherlands seeing the number of unemployed increasing, the eurozone is once again dealing with matters previously thought to be on a road to recovery. If you add production numbers across the zone taking a hit and manufacturing seeing a 4.8 per cent drop compared to February, and the powerhouse of Germany stuttering, then you can understand the volatility of three cents plus against the pound during the last month. Going forward, keep your eyes open for issues arising in Slovenia, where they have just raised in excess of €1 billion by selling government bonds, and discussions around secrecy banking laws in Austria. Interestingly, the UK has also experienced weak growth at construction businesses in February and this has cast doubt over the possible economic recovery in the first quarter of 2013. Here’s the thing: the sector grew by 5.5 per cent on the previous month, failing to recover the ground lost in January, and is running at seven per cent below that seen in February 2012, linked to a drop of 0.7% in retail sales. The new governor of the Bank of England has a lot to consider. There was some light on the horizon, however, when the services sector increased to a seven month high reading of 52.4: anything above 50 represents growth but this figure indicates a solid rather than spectacular recovery. Good News Pending? Continuing the “light” theme, RICS published early readings indicating an increase in property enquiries and this was supported by date by Nationwide and Halifax showing an increase in house prices across the UK. It may be that the news in May is even better, particularly as Nationwide have announced their lowest interest rate mortgage for those lucky enough to have 40 per cent to place as a deposit. Stateside, JP Morgan have announced record profits and are happy to say that the US recovery is getting stronger: while they announced profits at $6.5 billion, retailers in the US were not quite so happy as latest data shows sales fell unexpectedly in March. In a country where consumer spending accounts for 70 per cent of the economy, are consumers now holding back again? In the eurozone we would be happy to have people returning to gainful employment. However, with only 88,000 jobs being created in the States the market was a little disappointed. President Obama has also set out his spending cuts to replace the $85 billion “sequester” cuts that came into force in March, and is looking at measures

106

that would bring the US deficit down to around 2.8 per cent of GDP by 2016. This would cut the deficit by $1.8 trillion over the next decade. Will it be enacted? If so he will certainly need the support of Republicans. With what’s going on around the world it’s difficult to decide when to get the most for your business of private transfers, and a look at the accompanying rates chart confirms the last month’s volatility.
