From the
For those of a certain age the months seem to flash past at an alarming pace. As we stretch out on the sofa in a mist of nostalgia, super comfy in our slippers and PJs, sipping a medicinal evening whisky and giggling insanely at re-runs of Faulty Towers, we wonder (often out aloud, even if only the cats are listening) how summer was just the other day – and whatever happened to autumn! Of course, the rest of the Home & Lifestyle team are much more sprightly and not prone to such senior moments, so consequently they have been diligently preparing for our first winter issue for what seems like ages (although it has probably only been two months). The result is a bumper November-December issue that straddles autumn and winter with some transitional trend ideas that allow us to continue enjoying the incomparable Mediterranean climate, either outdoors or semi-protected on the terrace, while also making plans for the colder winter evenings. In our Boutique Trends section, we showcase a selection of rugs and flooring options that can provide both a cosy touch and a vibrant décor statement to any room, check out some new fireplace models (both traditional wood and contemporary bioethanol burners), and sink into the warm embrace of a versatile range of sofas. We also revamp our wallpaper with summery Asian-inspired designs and our fabrics with cool geometric patterns, enhance the home ambience with state-of-the-art lighting, and update our bedrooms with quality linen. Looking to the Christmas-New Year season, we review some of the stunning tableware collections currently on the market and available on the Costa del Sol. The star of our Décor & Design section this issue is the bathroom, a haven for blissful bathing and relaxed retrospection, where we highlight a selection of outstanding brands that offer contemporary functionality and chic sophistication. This is our last issue for 2015 so – from all of us at Home & Lifestyle – we wish you a congenial and spiritually enlivening festive season and look forward to showcasing more cutting-edge home decoration concepts in 2016.

Top Left Major brands Kartell and Laufen partnered up to put the wow-factor into bathrooms. They added warm-coloured modern furniture and accessories, creating sophisticated contemporary bathrooms which are aesthetically beautiful and highly functional. The bath is from the Sentec range. Laufen is available at Banni in CC El Capricho in Marbella (www.banni.es) and Mercasur in Estepona (www.mercasurestepona.com). Top Right The Muse free-standing bath by Zuchetti is contemporary in its design with pure soft lines, making it particularly inviting to use. The bath offers a luxury feel and – made from Silkstone – it is soft to the touch. It is small in size, hugging you while you are bathing and fitting easily into most bathroom spaces. Zuchetti is available at Banni in CC El Capricho in Marbella (www.banni.es). Left The Ciotole bath by Purapietra is based on two bowls stacked on top of each other unevenly, thus becoming one entire piece of stone. The highest part of the bath is for the head, enable you to relax comfortably (www.purapietra.it).

Above For those who prefer to have a more minimalist bathroom, the sleek lines of Roca’s Modo collection will surely appeal. This range is the first in Roca’s catalogue to offer basins, baths and shower trays made entirely with the made-to-measure material SURFEX ® (www.roca.com). Below Agape’s DR bath was the result of a collaboration between the Brazilian designer Marcio Kogan and Studio MK27. It is now available in new finishes made of raw materials. The thin coating, applied by hand, is just a few millimetres thick but is very durable. Agape is available in certain outlets on the Costa del Sol (www.agapedesign.it).

Above This freestanding bath designed by Philippe Starck for Duravit looks stunning in this bathroom. Rooms styled like this are often described as “living bathrooms” as they offer all of the services of a bathroom but are cleverly designed like a living room. This bathroom, with its backlit bookcase and contemporary rocking chair, steers away from the clinical and impersonal look often associated with bathrooms and instead creates a welcoming ambience where you are inclined to spend more time. Duravit is available at Puya in San Pedro de Alcántara and Marbella (www.puya.es). Below Squaro Prestige by Villeroy & Boch defines luxury in the bathroom. This free-standing Squaro Edge 12 bath comes with hand-fitted wood veneers and is made of the innovative material Quaryl® – giving the range an exceptionally special touch. Villeroy & Boch is available at Puya in San Pedro de Alcántara and Marbella (www.puya.es).

That Flaunt
When you want to update your home, what is below your feet is often ignored. Updating your floors can add real value to your home and totally revamp a dated room. There are plenty of different options to choose from, including tiles, hardwood, natural stone and micro-cement – so there’s a lot to consider!

Cement tiling is a 19th century flooring technique which is still used today. The Drops range by Entic Designs is made up of encaustic cement floor tiles depicting Japanese fish ponds. Top Hardwood floors are fantastic for keeping your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer months. They are easy to maintain, highly durable and ecologically friendly. What is more, if you decide to move house, you can take your floor with you! The unique character of oak has made it a popular flooring material, and it does not creak underfoot even with underfloor heating. Any wear and tear gives the flooring more character as the years go on. Wooden flooring is available at Korsch Cabinetmakers in Pol. Ind. Elviria (www.korsch-tischlerei.com). Below The Décapé wooden flooring by Ceramiche Piemme demonstrates how wooden flooring can look urban and contemporary (www.ceramichepiemme.com).

Ravishing Rugs During winter in Spain, stone and marble floors can feel quite cold so rugs are ideal to provide a cosy feeling. Whether you want a dramatic flash of colour across your floor or a rug that simply blends into its surroundings, adding a warmer ambience to the room, the key consideration when choosing a rug is to invest in one that is of high quality for maximum durability and aesthetic charm.
Jab Anstoetz almost deconstructs the traditional and iconic tartan pattern and turns it into a fresh and contemporary design with this fanciful new “Characters” Tartan collection. Jab uses pure silk and the finest virgin New Zealand wool for all of its rugs. Jab Anstoetz is available at Cort Idea in CC Idea on the Mijas Road (www.cortidea.es).

As more and more eco-friendly products come onto the market, and people are consciously looking for ways to reduce the impact we humans have made in a negative way on our planet, it is very heartening to see exactly how much we can do. Countries all over the world are uniting in the fight against waste, plastics and chemicals – just about anything you can think of which damages the place we live in – and taking care of the animals we share it with. These include projects utilising solar power, of course, but also using insects which can eat plastics to clear landfills and machines to combat the vast amount of plastic rubbish floating in our oceans and hurting our fish, reducing air pollution, closing down chemical factories (or hitting them with horrendous fines), petitioning against drilling in pristine Arctic waters… each and every battle is slowly but surely won. Brazil, one of the worst countries in the world with its policy of cutting down immense swathes of tropical forest, did (in 2009) reduce nearly 90 per cent of deforestation with the result that forests are returning. Shell have pulled out of the Arctic as petitions have made their impact, and now pristine places there will be kept… pristine. All these factors – and the work designers do using natural and innovative products which do not harm our lives – represent a huge step forward. I look forward all the time to seeing what I can find.

WARM YOUR HOME WITH COLOUR
FOR QUALITY
Sculptural Innovation in South Korea Korean artist Jaehyo Lee shows his respect for natural raw materials and a very innovative approach in displaying their characteristics. His “Transformations” series uses a mesh of logs and bent nails, which form cross sections that reveal the structure of the materials within. His sculptural works always incorporated natural elements on a grand scale, from the icicle sculptures he grew using hanging threads to arrays of dangling rocks suspended in mid-air – seen in his studio in Yangpyeong. However, it is his sculptural furniture using cross-sectional wood which has attracted worldwide attention. Some of his wooden sculptures appear as though the spaces between the trunks have been filled with a black substance, but this is due to the effects of charring and shadows. To apply a finishing touch to his wood and nails sculptures, Lee first burns the materials and then sands down the exposed faces to create highly contrasting colours. It works beautifully, giving a depth and softness to something as mundane as wood or nails. www.leeart.name

Reducing Smog in The Netherlands In Rotterdam this September, Studio Roosegaarde launched the Smog Free Project. It has been hailed as the world’s largest vacuum cleaner, and it uses a technique patented by Studio Roosegaarde. In certain towns and cities, the vast amount of air pollution we humans produce, through cars, machines, etc., is extremely visible. To get rid of it, ion technology produces smog-free bubbles of public space, allowing people to breathe and experience clean air. The tower cleans 30,000 cubic metres of air per hour of ultra fine smog, uses no more electricity than a water boiler and runs on green energy. Not only is this an immediate solution for creating clean parks but it is also a sensory experience of a clean future; people can become a part of the solution instead of being the problem. As a souvenir, the studio has created jewellery made from the collected smog particles. By sharing the Smog Free jewellery, a supporter donates 1,000 cubic metres of clean air to the city. After the launch in Rotterdam, the Smog Free Project is set to travel the world. www.studioroosegaarde.net

Colour will once again play a prominent role in this year’s World Architecture Festival (WAF) following the announcement that AkzoNobel – a leading global paint and coatings company and major producer of specialty chemicals – will return as headline sponsor for the event for a third consecutive year. To be held at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore from 4 to 6 November, the WAF is considered the world’s largest architectural celebration and conference. Last year, AkzoNobel named Copper Orange as colour of the year and awarded its “Innovative Use of Colour on Exteriors Prize” to the orange-yellow headquarters of the Vienna University of Economics and Business’ Department of Law and Central Administration. Precious Inspirations at Maison & Objet in Paris
One of the new features of September’s Maison & Objet in Paris was an Inspirations Forum with the theme “Precious”. According to exhibition director Philippe Brocart, this theme was chosen because “we all wanted to address the revival of baroque influences. The theme Precious came forth as a metaphor for that which is rare and unique. It distinguishes the return of well-crafted decorative arts, but also the fashion of excess.” www.maison-objet.com
Founded in 2010, the London-based Finnish artisanal design and lifestyle brand Klaus Haapaniemi & Co showcased its products – a luxurious home collection focusing on hand-printed textiles, cushions, woven throws and hand-made rugs – for the first time at the 2015 Maison & Objet Paris September exhibition. Klaus Haapaniemi’s design approach is influenced by nature, Finnish folklore and traditional decorative arts with a modern twist – “telling a story with a touch of fantasy and magic”. www.klaush.com

SHOWCASE Iddomus Signature Projects
Adding a High-End Personal Touch to Designer Homes
Innovation, quality and stylish functionally are just some of the key hallmarks of an IDDOMUS signature project. This year these qualities have been on full splendid display at the company’s showhouse – with the added appeal of IDDOMUS’s trademark personal touch and cutting-edge creativity. One of the highlights of an exciting 2015 for the Costa del Sol-based Belgian construction and development company was a visit earlier this year by the photographic team from the Parisian head office of renowned international home decoration retailer Habitat. They were in Marbella to photograph the spring/summer collection for their new catalogue, and the shoot location was chosen carefully to suit the brand’s innovative image. In the end, they opted for a luxury villa built by IDDOMUS and situated in Elviria.
86
Habitat would have been impressed and reassured by IDDOMUS’s commitment to developing high-end homes that incorporate the highest quality and guarantees. In fact, these go far and beyond the decennial guarantee established by Spanish law, which relate to structural aspects only. IDDOMUS includes three years of overall guarantee for the premises and installations, as well as three years of technical maintenance. IDDOMUS villas are built to northern European standards, ensuring the solidity and longevity of a construction process that is executed in an optimal timeframe. This certified process is based on the Belgian modular concrete building system SISMO (www.sismo.eu), which ensures maximal stability and superior quality, allowing for reduced construction time.

Offering a comprehensive and personalised service of design, development and construction of bespoke turnkey villas, IDDOMUS is involved with the management and completion of each step of the development process, offering clients the security and convenience of one single firm with all departments full integrated. As part of the company’s business model and philosophy, the IDDOMUS team maintain regular dialogue with clients, from the initial selection of the plot and its geotechnical and topographical study, design of the villa, choice of finishes, development of plans, licensing and all bureaucratic procedures to the actual building execution, utility connections and final details. This allows clients to follow the process closely, without facing the daunting task of undertaking a building project in a foreign country. Every IDDOMUS house is signed and issued with its own unique serial number,
registered in the firm’s database with all the specifications pertaining to the project, for access and reference by the current or future owners – thus providing added value to the property as well as long-term peace of mind. IDDOMUS’s financial structure is also set up to protect the client. SOCOTEC, one of the world’s leading independent building quality surveyors, officially certifies each building phase before the client is presented with the invoice for the completed stage. Clients never pre-pay for unexecuted works: payments are only extended for what is sound and built to the expected quality. IDDOMUS Signature Projects Marbella Tel. The renowned Marbella lifestyle is highly coveted throughout Europe and further afield. Offering an incomparable combination of chic glamour and traditional charm in one of the world’s most enviable climates, Marbella figures prominently on the wish-list of anyone seeking a convenient, easy-going outdoor life in the Mediterranean sun – and Mirabella Hills ticks all the key boxes on that list. The select community of 14 modern-designed, five-bedroom villas that makes up Mirabella Hills is located in La Alquería, one of Marbella’s most up-and-coming areas, dotted with villas and attractively laid out apartments. Mirabella Hills’ private setting offers home-owners an almost 360-degree panorama of golf courses, open mountain scenery and the Mediterranean coastline from Marbella towards Estepona. La Alquería is home to all the best aspects of Costa del Sol living: tucked away in a secure environment where peace and privacy reign in the midst of stunning natural surroundings, but with the glamorous and sophisticated attractions of Marbella city centre and Puerto Banús just a few minutes away. To achieve this balance, Mirabella Hills brought together a team “that stands out for its creativity, skill, professionalism and track record”, covering all elements from top architect Carlos Lamas to construction and engineering specialists At-
las Group, and “ensuring the quality, aesthetic design and living pleasure offered by Mirabella Hills”. The villas feature both modern architectural styling and open-plan layouts that allow for flexible, appealing interior living spaces. Spacious, stylish and rich in natural light, the rooms and terraces are designed to take full advantage of the exceptional surrounding views, with creative design, the finest materials and construction standards and latest technology creating luxurious modern homes for the 21st century. A choice of three main designs and three sub-designs is available to complement personalised kitchen, bathroom and overall decorative fittings, with additional space available to create a spa, home cinema, entertainment area or gym. The Internet
Your Property’s Biggest Shop Window!
By Sean Woolley
Various recent studies have shown that 90 per cent of prospective buyers begin their hunt for an overseas property on the internet. This is a startling figure, although perhaps not wholly surprising. The internet has enabled property hunters to sift through hundreds of properties, look at all the pictures and imagine themselves living the dream… all from the comfort of their sofa. When we began our business in 2002, we took the bold decision (well, it was bold at the time) to concentrate our marketing efforts into online options. Those were the days when it was relatively easy and cheap to dominate search engines like Google and quickly build a thriving online presence. Of course, now things have changed and most overseas property companies have online marketing budgets stretching into several thousands of euros, all vying for the attention of prospective purchasers who are browsing online. There are several marketing tools that agents will use to market your property for sale, and these include exhibitions, magazine and newspaper advertising, billboards and the shop window of their own premises. But when you consider the statistic from the opening paragraph of this article it is safe to assume that the biggest shop window for your property will be the internet. So if you’ve got a property for sale here in southern Spain, how do you get the online exposure you need?
Firstly, you will need a reputable, professional agent who has a significant online presence. By that I mean that, if a potential customer searches for properties in your area on Google, the agent is listed on the first page of the search results. But that’s not all. Your property needs to be visible and easily found by anyone looking for something like your property, so make sure the property is “coded” correctly. By this I mean to make sure that your agent has correctly described your property and allocated it to the correct area, with the correct price, size, number of rooms, etc. You would be surprised how many agents don’t do these simple things correctly. Of particular importance is the quality of the photographs relating to your property that potential buyers will be able to see. Don’t forget, this is YOUR shop window and it’s absolutely vital that your property looks its very best. That means clear blue skies, clean pool, de-cluttered interior, lights ON. Trust me, nobody will want to step inside your property, let alone buy it, if it’s set against leaden skies with a dark interior, with the toilet seats up and yesterday’s washing still on the line! Make sure your agent takes top quality photographs, using a camera with a wide-angled lens and an editing suite back in the office. Too many vendors and agents under-estimate the importance of this, but it is absolutely vital in selling your property here in Spain. Don’t forget: first impressions sell!

A Fascinating World of
Lighting
Interview with Andrea Rogmann from Magyk Lumière 96
NOVEMBER DECEMBER 5
First Person HL42.indd 96
01/11/15 19:58
How did you become involved with decoration? I have always had a passion for the world of interior design. Since I was a child I have been captivated by beautiful interiors. I opened my first interior decoration shop about 25 years ago in Morocco, then my family and I settled in Spain in 1999 and since then I have been working almost all the time in this sector. For the last 12 years I have been working as an interior designer in an international furniture company (Roche Bobois). About one year ago I felt that I needed a new challenge in my life and, after brainstorming with my family and friends, we thought it would be a good idea to open a shop with decorative lighting and attractive accessories for the home – all those things you need to make your home special. What kinds of products and services do Magyk offer? The main product at Magyk is the world of decorative lighting. Decorative lighting is indeed a world, because you cannot even imagine how many beautiful and different lighting possibilities exist. Our goal is to create a selection of different kinds of decorative lamps and lights which are different from those available in conventional lighting shops. We display lamps with accessories and furniture so that you can really visualise the beauty of the lamp. This means that we also sell other products apart from lighting: home textiles, wallpapers, complements, mirrors and art works, candles, furniture (for outdoor and indoor use), as well as wall and TV units. Many lighting options, and even furniture, can be adapted to the personal needs and tastes of the client. We pay a lot of attention to all of these “small details”, which are really important to add a personal touch to your interior. Many of our new customers who come to visit our shop are pleasantly surprised by this new concept as well as finding lamps that have only ever been seen in magazines. Our commitment is to help our clients make their homes different, adapted to their personal lifestyle and taste. A home should be a reflection of your own personality and not an exhibition of furniture. How do you keep up with latest trends in design? The most important updates are at the international fairs, which every professional should attend at least once or twice a year. I go to Maison & Objet in general once a year and I have also been to the international Euroluce fair in Milan this year. It is really impressive to see all the different possibilities for lighting and decoration. There are so many things that, even after spending a week there, you can be sure you have not seen everything. The good thing is that you catch all the latest trends and gain inspiration. The bad thing is that in the end you always have to make a small selection – and this is really difficult with so much choice, but we try to manage it. Eventually we always return with loads of catalogues and ideas; tired, but with plenty of enthusiasm.
What do you enjoy most about your work? The most important thing is when our client is satisfied with the result of our work. In general I do not really like the word “decorator”. Decoration must be adapted to each person with all their personal needs and preferences – their lifestyle. For me, to decorate means to help and advise but not to decide – the final decision about the interior design of a space should belong to the person who lives there. An interior designer should give ideas and inspiration and help people realise them. What are your plans for the future of Magyk? We will try to improve our selection of lamps and decorative lighting, and we want to expand our selection of furniture and offer some exclusive items which you can only find at Magyk Lumière. Our personal attention to clients will also be improved, by hiring more staff and continuing to ensure interior projects are adapted to their needs. In conclusion… Light is one of the most important factors in architecture and interior design. We should play with light, creating rhythm and not just a uniform space of light. The right lighting creates emotion and should not leave you with a sense of indifference. Magyk Lumière C/ Lagasca 62, San Pedro de Alcántara (Marbella) Tel. Creating Exceptional Glass Environments Interview with Juan Carlos Moreno from Acristalia 98
NOVEMBER DECEMBER 5

What products and services do Acristalia offer? We manufacture all kinds of special glassed-in enclosures, are market leaders in glass curtains, and offer a range of products including moveable glass roofs, glass railings, ecological pergolas, PVC windows, wind-breakers for hotel terraces, and everything related to glass. We manufacture our own systems and undertake 100 per cent of the production process, from taking measurements in your home to manufacturing the product and completing the installation ourselves. This enables us to offer a fully-integrated service with no third parties involved, and all the work is carried out by professionals who are enclosure specialists. What are the latest trends and products in your industry? More and more we want to enjoy the maximum space and time we can, and with Acristalia products we make this a reality. With glass curtains, for example, we enclose an area such as a patio or terrace-balcony which you normally can only enjoy during certain months of the year. Installing glass curtains enables you to enjoy the space throughout the year without giving up the views from your terrace. With our moveable glass roof you can enjoy an al fresco dinner while gazing at the stars, without having to worry about the weather spoiling the night. It is as simple as closing the roof and continuing with dinner fully sheltered from the rain. We also have an innovative railing system which, while providing protection, also allows you to continue enjoying the views through the glass, as well as an ecological Acristalia pergola – the perfect product to create a chill-out ambience in your outdoor areas. How has the company developed over the past few years? Acristalia was launched as a company in 2007, and its founders have more than 25 years’ experience in the enclosures industry. Since then we have never
stopped growing and developing our own enclosure systems, visiting the sector’s main international fairs and continually innovating our products. Currently, Acristalia products are present in more than 20 countries. What is it you enjoy most about working in your industry? The satisfaction of being able to create a product designed by Acristalia’s team of engineers, to see how an idea is transformed from blueprint to prototype, then becoming a realty, and then seeing the eventual client enjoying something created by your team and which is fulfilling its objective. This, together with the client’s own satisfaction, is the best way a team of professionals like ours can enjoy their work. In conclusion… Acristalia’s products are developed and manufactured by the Acristalia team, and in our case the professionals who undertake the work – both manufacturing and installation – are specialists in these products. Furthermore, there are no intermediaries between the manufacturer and you. Being able to offer this direct and personalised service enables us to ensure the best service is provided and to guarantee that everything will be completed properly. At Acristalia we know that the best reward for good work is the opportunity our clients give us to continue offering them good work. 01/11/15 19:58
How did you get into the world of jewellery? Thanks to my father, I had a lucky childhood as I was surrounded by jewellery. My father has always been and still is a retail jeweller in the UK, but I ended up being more on the creative side. What does Paves offer that other jewellery companies don’t? First of all, no pushiness, in an easy and comfortable atmosphere and we do anything we can to please our clients. Most of all, we create magnificent jewellery, large or small, as well as carrying out repairs or just polishing. Our services are endless. We have an in-house design studio with experienced designers, four incredibly talented goldsmiths and “me” – all under the same roof. What are the latest trends in jewellery? Jewellery is changing remarkably. People do not want to worry about their belongings, and they are seeking more wearable jewellery for daily purposes rather than having to leave them in the bank and never getting to wear them. Tell us more about your newly-refurbished showroom… Well, after my first extension seven years ago I said never again, but you know the saying, “never say never”. This time I really went for it, adding an extra 100
square metres to our existing 60 square metres to fulfil my wishes of having all my staff under the same roof. We are all extremely pleased to be working in such a relaxed ambience that oozes creativity from every corner of the shop and studio. In conclusion… One of our specialities is changing old unworn jewellery into new, classy, updated wearable pieces. I would say I am a very traditional jeweller with a contemporary twist, and a perfectionist needing everything to be manufactured to the highest standards. Most of us would always prefer to create a verdant, vibrantly hued garden with “real” plants, trees, flowers and herbs but sometimes a little faux touch can add a subtly elegant touch to the home décor – especially in apartments where space and light is not always optimum. The latest collection of faux flowers, foliage and succulents from Nordic House is described as “tantalisingly life-like”, so much so that to the un-

trained eye you almost need to get right up close to know they’re aren’t the real deal. Created as the result of a sustainable architectural study, Vivood landscape hotels offer guests the opportunity of escaping from the stress of everyday life in a pristine natural environment. The original accommodation was designed to be eco-friendly prefabricated units with a unique, patented, fold-away design, and this philosophy was subsequently consolidated with the development of adults-only landscape hotels surrounded by nature. The first project is set in the unspoilt Guadalest Valley, about 50 minutes from Alicante. Its amenities include 25 independently-designed suites, an infinity pool, a restaurant and lounge bar, and various terraces with private outdoor jacuzzis. The overall aim was to create a tranquil ambience that enables guests to “stop and rediscover yourself” while remaining committed to Vivood’s origi-
nal values of “respect and admiration for nature without sacrificing comfort and convenience”. According to Vivood, the five key precepts for this luxury hotel initiative are focused on: • Environment – “We consume local products.” • Enchantment – “We use all our sensory skills.” • Exclusive – “We offer you another way of looking at luxury.” • Excitement – “We make efforts to change the world.” • Ecology – “We use renewable energies to reduce our carbon footprint.” www.vivood.com HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Located in a venerable music-orientated Paris neighbourhood, the Idol Hotel offers guests a sensorial experience aimed at awakening all senses – sight as much as touch and hearing. It provides the emotion of a design hotel with the added attraction of sound and groove, taking music fans back to a memorable era of black music from the 1960s to the 1980s. Composed by jazz, soul and funk music lover Yann Gasparini, renovated by Elegancia Hotels and AD-Tango, and painted by artist and hotel decorator Julie Gauthron, the hotel “sells as many experiences as overnight stays”. Its setting on rue d’Edimbourg is near the Grands Magasins district, Opera Garnier and Conservatoire Municipal de Paris, and numerous musical instrument makers have also settled in the same street and its surroundings. On entering the 32-room hotel, guests hear the first notes of Boogie Wonderland (Earth Wind & Fire) or Across 110th Street (Bobby Womack), while a bright
neon light sculpted by Gauthron and entitled “The Sound of the Trumpet” illuminates the lounge area. A photocall backdrop enables guests to take a photo in front of a record cover (while wearing one of the wigs) and post it on Facebook or Instagram – even (if that is their fancy) mimic Austin Powers’ “Groovy baby”. Parisian record shop owner François Mazza (a.k.a. “DJ Maz”) and Gasparini have carefully picked a selection of records for the Idol Hotel, and arranged for “Planet L” spheres (an emblem of the iconic brand Elipson) installed in the rooms, as well as old turntables in the common areas. Throughout the year, guests and locals can attend a variety of musical events at the hotel, and find the Idol’s playlists on new social network Whyd. www.idolhotel-paris.com Photos: Céline Demoux HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Motoring luxury has been taken to a new level of pleasure with Volvo’s Lounge Console, unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show. The concept behind the initiative is “to offer busy chauffeur-driven businesspeople the ultimate executive accessory – a compact and versatile solution to expanded storage and comfort”. To that end, the Lounge Console replaces the front passenger seat, allowing for full forward vision, creating a spacious environment and incorporating numerous features designed to enhance the in-car experience including a large work table that opens to reveal an illuminated vanity mirror, with a storage tray for jewellery and personal accessories or make-up. The table rotates 90 degrees and simultaneously powers forward to display a 17-inch media screen for theatre. An additional area for shoes is located below the cushioned leg rest, and added security is provided by a lockable storage box. “We started this work by looking at the executive lifestyle,” explains Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president for design at Volvo Car Group. “A key element in our thinking was how to make the available interior space work for the occupants in an optimal and luxurious fashion. Removing the passenger seat enabled us to create an open space that dramatically changes the dynamics of the interior and led to a firework of ideas and new possibilities. “People who are on the move and have a hectic lifestyle going from event to event or meeting to meeting need some space, some luxury time, and the opportunity to relax and refresh themselves for the next engagement. This is ultimately what the Lounge Console is designed to facilitate.” HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

San Pedro’s excellent range of restaurants has been further enhanced with the opening of Kilometro 0 in September. Km.0 (to give the restaurant it’s popularly abbreviated title) represents a concept based on preparing all dishes with local ingredients: organic and from nearby farmers’ markets. Only the best ecological products from the area are used, which is also a magnificent way of supporting the local economy and suppliers. For example, the eggs and bread are from Rio Grande (Coín), the olive oil from Málaga, the fish straight from the port, the wines from Ronda, and the fruit and vegetables from Guadalhorce. Another refreshing aspect is that you will not find any fried food, and nor do they use refined products. The menu is highlighted by numerous raw and vegan dishes, and almost everything they serve is gluten-free. After trying many of their dishes, we can say the menu is extremely varied and we were more than pleasantly surprised by how good organic food can taste. Km.0 serves a variant of the caprese salad, but so much better than the original one! Together with the traditional mozzarella and tomatoes, a gazpacho dressing, strawberries and ice-cream of basil was added... absolutely delicious.
We also savoured the grilled entrecote, which is certified grass-fed meat and wonderfully tender. The sushi from grated cauliflower is a must for food-lovers, and I had no idea that quinoa with dried fruits and mustard could taste the way we experienced it at this restaurant. All the desserts are homemade, gluten and refined sugar-free, and made by the owner – the lovely Amanda Gedeon. She imparts an enormous amount of knowledge when it comes to food and you can see, hear and most importantly, taste it... she truly puts her heart and soul into the restaurant. Km.0 offers breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, with healthy juices, smoothies and super food menus. They also have free Wi-Fi and cater for large groups. Km0 Avda. del Mediterráneo, Edif. Located in the charming Aloha Pueblo area, El Banco Restaurant & Bar was opened two years ago by vivacious restaurateur Laura De Luca. She and her husband had been running the successful La Red beach restaurant in Marbella but Laura felt it was time to open something for herself, so she chose the old BBVA bank at the entrance to Aloha Pueblo and set up a beautiful establishment. When designing the restaurant, Laura wanted to keep some of the original features of the bank. She hired two Italian interior designers who let their creative ideas flow. The decoration is contemporary and eclectic with a state-of-the-art open kitchen situated behind the bar area. The chairs inside the restaurant are a mix-match of different styles but somehow work together to create a playful dining area around elegant tables with white tablecloths. Look out for the funny ditties on the wall, as well as an original safe from the bank which is now used to store wine and is lit up with different coloured LED lights. There is also an outdoor dining area that wraps its way around the two sides of the restaurant – enabling you to bask in the midday sun or sit out in the buzz of Aloha Pueblo at night. There is a lot going on at El Banco. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and every Thursday evening you can enjoy live music. Coming up there will be a
special Christmas lunch on 25 December when traditional Christmas dishes such as turkey with all the trimmings will be on offer (fish and meat dishes are also available if turkey is not your preference). For New Year’s Eve El Banco will be offering a special set menu, with guests able to celebrate in a fun and cosy atmosphere while dining on sumptuous dishes specially chosen by the chef. If you are thinking of holding a corporate Christmas party, El Banco is the ideal location. The menu is varied to suit all tastes and, with their fun décor and extremely accommodating staff, the ambience is wonderfully warm and relaxed. Popular dishes from their international menu, to name just a few, include ceviche, Argentinean steak, tuna tartare and linguine El Banco served with beef strips, cherry tomatoes, garlic, brandy, parmesan and rocket leaves. It goes without saying that all the desserts are homemade, and there is also a large selection of wines on offer. El Banco Restaurant & Bar Urb. NOTES
Not Just Another
Wine Region By AJ Linn
Anyone who owns a restaurant here will tell you they have difficulty choosing what wines to put on their list. There are simply too many. And that’s only the Spanish ones. They cannot even try all the sample bottles they are given. If you want to be safe but boring you will do what most do: stick to the established red favourites from Rioja and Ribera del Duero, and whites from Penedés and Rías Baíxas. Ignore the El Bierzos, Somontanos, Prioratos, Valdeorras and Gaditanos. Who’s ever heard of them anyway? Even on the Costa del Sol, some of Spain’s best wines from Ronda are hard to find. And who can blame the restaurant? Perhaps only 10 per cent of their customers understand wine, and even fewer want to be considered anoraks. There is simply too much wine on offer, making a good argument for reducing the number of officially denominated wine regions. There are nearly 80. Ever heard of Arribes, Bullas, Méntrida, Pago Guijoso, Valles de Benavente, Monterrei, Cangas or Finca Élez? No real reason why you should, but they are all first level wine regions with their own Consejo Regulador governing council. The producers in each region pay for these regulatory bodies. If you are appointed to one it really is a grand job. If you also happen to make wine, the opportunities for conflicts of interest are endless. You also get to attend a lot of official functions and enjoy endless lunches – on full pay and expenses. This surfeit of classifications explains why we miss out on some of the best wines. For example, there is a miniscule region sandwiched between La Rioja and Ribera del Duero. This must be one of Spain’s best-kept secrets and you have never seen it on a wine list or in a store. The wines are superb, obviously, and because it is a new and practically unknown classification, prices are nonsensically low. Resuscitation of Arlanza Wine Culture
There is absolutely nothing the slightest bit unusual about the history of the Arlanza region. In fact it is typical of any wine region. Records show that wine was produced here in the 10th century, and there was sufficient coming out of the vineyards and sold direct from the barrel to satisfy local demand. Nothing much happened until the dreaded phylloxera bug struck in the early part of the 20th century and wiped out every vine and consequently the entire wine business. Re-establishment of bug-resistant vines took its time but by mid-century things were almost back to normal – just as the region took another big hit, this time
114
largely predictable. Spain’s burgeoning industrial revolution was gearing up and factories offered better wages than vineyards so, unsurprisingly, agricultural workers upped sticks and swapped agrarian drudgery for industrial drudgery. Since most of the bodegas were small family-run businesses, they were hard hit, and the temptation to give up winemaking in favour of other more profitable crops made it look as if Arlanza was due for a second potentially terminal eclipse. Happily, around 1995, much like in Priorato and a handful of other regions where it was worth the effort, a group of enthusiasts resolved to resuscitate Arlanza’s wine culture. The initiative was so successful, thanks in good part to the sheer quality of the wines, that in 2007 the zone was officially granted its own Denomination of Origin, one of the most recent authorised in Spain (www.arlanza.org). Unsurprisingly the dominant grape variety is Tinta del País, otherwise known as Tempranillo, although Petit Verdot, Garnacha and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others, together with a couple of white varieties, also contribute. However, Tempranillo is the favourite national grape and notably it is here that it grows at the highest altitude in Spain. Now boasting 23 bodegas, most of them quite small and many producing wines of limited production, this region has an unusually bright future in the opinion of many experts. The bodegas making the most interesting wines include Bodegas Lerma, whose winemaker splits his time between the well-known Ribera del Duero winery of Arzuaga and Lerma. Among a fascinating selection ranging in price between €3 and €15, the Gran Vino Lerma de Autor stands out (€15). Another bodega whose wines amaze is the tiny operation of Alonso Angulo, started in 2010 and just now bringing wine to the market. The Flor de Sanctus (€14) is pure Tempranillo and only 3,700 bottles were released. The Sanctus (€24) is also Tempranillo and more exclusive still with 1,300 bottles only. Bodegas Arlanza in contrast is a large concern, producing a range of seven wines, but, again, at very reasonable prices, from €2.50 up to Tinto Selección Especial Dominio de Manciles at €17.30. This was one of the first bodegas to operate commercially in the region, and it exports much of its production. In Spain there is a comprehensive distribution network extending to the Costa del Sol.

Cutting-Edge Advice for Healthy Living
By John Schieszer
No More Reading Glasses?
It may now be possible to get rid of your reading glasses permanently. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has now approved a new inlay procedure that can correct presbyopia and this new procedure should be available in Marbella soon. Presbyopia is a condition that develops around age 40 and it involves the gradual loss of your eyes’ ability to focus on nearby objects. Until now, you had to wear reading glasses or bifocals, or undergo surgical procedures. The problem with the surgical procedures were that they could compromise a person’s distance vision and they often offered no guarantee of lasting success. The new procedure is called the KAMRA inlay and it is pretty simple. It involves inserting a tiny black ring into the eye. The ring focuses light properly onto the retina and creates sharper near vision. Dr. Tom Tooma, who is the founder of NVISION Eye Centres, helped pioneer this new technique. He has been performing it in both California and Oregon. He says the KAMRA inlay is smaller and thinner than a contact lens and can be inserted in an outpatient procedure performed in approximately 15 minutes. Implanted in a pocket within the cornea, the KAMRA inlay relies on small aperture optics designed to increase depth-of-focus. Dr. Tooma adds that, as this simple new technique becomes widely available in Spain and around the world, we can look for reading glasses to become a thing of the past, much like rotary telephones and cassette tapes. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, more than one billion people worldwide suffer from presbyopia. Life Expectancy Climbing Worldwide
If you think people around the world are living much longer, you are right. A new study just published in The Lancet has found that global life expectancy has risen by more than six years since 1990 as healthy life expectancy grows.
Researchers conducted an analysis of all major diseases and injuries in 188 countries. They found that thanks to marked declines in death and illness caused by HIV/AIDS and malaria in the past decade, and significant advances made in addressing communicable, maternal, neonatal, and nutritional disorders, health has improved significantly around the world. Global life expectancy at birth for both sexes rose by 6.2 years (from 65.3 in 1990 to 71.5 in 2013), while healthy life expectancy (HALE), at birth rose by 5.4 years (from 56.9 in 1990 to 62.3 in 2013). HALE takes into account not just mortality but also the impact of non-fatal conditions and summarises years lived with disability and years lost due to premature mortality. The increase in healthy life expectancy has not been as dramatic as the growth of life expectancy, and as a result people are living more years with illness and disability. The study was conducted by an international consortium of researchers and led by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington in Seattle. It shows that ischemic heart disease, lower respiratory infections and stroke cause the most health loss around the world. “The world has made great progress in health, but now the challenge is to invest in finding more effective ways of preventing or treating the major causes of illness and disability,” said the study’s lead author, Professor Theo Vos of IHME. People in countries such as Nicaragua and Cambodia have experienced dramatic increases in healthy life expectancy since 1990, 14.7 years for Nicaragua and 13.9 years for Cambodia. The reverse was true for people in Botswana and Belize, which saw declines of two years and 1.3 years, respectively. The differences between countries with the highest and lowest healthy life expectancies is stark. In 2013, Lesotho had the lowest, at 42 years, and Japan had the highest globally, at 73.4 years.

A Little Is Better Than None By Rachel Garrod
No-one today would dispute the health benefits of physical activity. Why then do so few of us manage to achieve even the minimum recommendation of 150 minutes moderate intensity activity per week? It would seem, however, that the problem is not uniquely European, with researchers from Taiwan(*) approaching the issue of inactivity from a different angle. They wanted to know, “What’s the minimum amount of physical activity that will have health benefits?” Over 400,000 healthy Taiwanese adults were followed up for around eight years. Each year they completed a questionnaire about their specific leisure time physical activities, how much, what and so on. Researchers were then able to ascribe the following categories to the population: inactive (no physical activity or less than 60 minutes per week); low volume (91 minutes per week); medium volume (222 minutes per week); high volume (361 minutes per week); and very high volume (523 minutes per week). The researchers measured incidences of diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease and the cause of death in those who died during the study period.
Statistical analysis was performed to account for differences in age, gender, smoking and alcohol consumption, and tests were performed to determine the risk of death from any cause, from cancer and from a cardiovascular condition. The results showed clear benefits of being active: the more physical activity you take the longer you live. However, what was most interesting was that, compared with those who were inactive, even as little as 15 minutes of physical activity per day provided a reduction in all-cause and all-cancer mortality. This reduction in mortality amounted to an extra three years of life. So the bottom line is: even a little physical activity is better than no physical activity, meaning there really is no excuse!

Global Engagement With Pop
Nicola L Bernard Rancillac
Evelyne Axell

A new exhibition at Tate Modern in London aims to “explode the traditional story of pop art”. Continuing until 24 January, “The EY Exhibition: The World Goes Pop” reveals how artists around the world engaged with the spirit of pop, from Latin America to Asia, and from Europe to the Middle East. Featuring around 160 works from the 1960s and 1970s, including many that have not been exhibited in the UK before, the exhibition shows how different cultures contributed, re-thought and responded to the movement. This focus on “the alternative stories” highlights key figures from Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East “who are often neglected by mainstream art history”. Noting that pop art was generally seen as an Anglo-American phenomenon, the organisers argue that the genre was “never a simple celebration of Western consumerism, but more often a subversive international language for criticism and public protest”. www.tate.org.uk

A Retrospective of Political Activism
Born in London in 1949, and now living in Hackney (East London), Peter Kennard’s art has been at the cutting edge of politics since his work protesting the Vietnam War in 1968. After studying at the Slade and the Royal College of Art, he abandoned painting during the late 1960s and sought new forms of expression to bring art and politics together. His aim was “to make art that spoke to all” and this led him to the medium of photomontage ”for its ability to show the unrevealed truth behind the image”. Today his photomontages, installations and paintings have a global following,
with wide exposure in galleries, on the streets, and in newspapers, magazines, posters and books, and he is said to have inspired many of today’s politicallyaware artists from Mark Wallinger to Banksy. A free exhibition running until 30 May at the IWM London (Imperial War Museums), “Peter Kennard: Unofficial War Artist”, is the first major retrospective of his work, charting a 50-year career and featuring over 200 artworks and related items, including a new art installation “Boardroom” created especially for the exhibition. www.iwm.org.uk / @I_W_M / www.facebook.com/iwm.london HOMEANDLIFESTYLE.ES

Bohemian View
of Classic Greenwich Village
Described by The New York Times as the “Bachrach of New York’s Bohemia”, and an indefatigable chronicler of the New York scene over the second half of the 20th century, Fred W. McDarrah photographed artists, writers, musicians and actors who frequented the bars, theatres, galleries and cafes in Greenwich Village. In a simple and direct style, he documented political rallies, museum openings, breaking news, feminism, experimental theatre, the rock and folk music scenes, dance, and the civil rights and anti-war movements – creating definitive street and studio portraits of luminaries, politicians and celebrities. He often roamed his beloved New York City on a bicycle, capturing the streets, buildings, landmarks, parks, beaches, pushcarts, subways, architecture, landscapes, churches, signs, cobblestones, storefronts and rooftops, and rose to prominence during a 50year association with the Village Voice newspaper (the house organ of the post-war counterculture). Now, the editors at Photo.com by Getty Images have selected more than 200 of McDarrah’s images, “with an eye towards their ability to work as wall décor”. Built on Getty Images’ archive and exclusive collections from a wide range of world-renowned photographers, Photos.com is a full-service printing and framing e-commerce business.

New Dimensions by Felix Muyo Dedicated to art for more than five decades, Felix Muyo’s style has developed significantly during that time, reaching a creative peak with his latest paintings, “Dimensions?” – the result of many years of work, from 2007 until now. Involved in the world of art and painting since he was a teenager, Muyo has participated in more than a hundred exhibitions in Spain and abroad. He has always been closely involved with and connected to Marbella, which has had a major influence on his work. In fact, he is recognised as being the city’s “forefather of modern art” since the 1970s. In 1991 he won the XI Marbella International Art Biennial. Felix Muyo’s work has been a path of evolution and social awareness. Using symbols and paintings, his objective has been to make us aware of social problems that are present in our day-to-day lives, such as wars, climate change, intellectual and cultural evolution of people, religion, environment, creation and the search for justice. “Dimensions?” showcases the artist’s maturity, with evidence of this displayed in the messages and symbols present in all the paintings of this latest collection: real objects, hallucinations, matters that concern the artist and that he wants us to be aware of and give the importance they warrant. Abstract Expressionism by Danny Verno Smith Danny Verno Smith has always had an affinity with nature and a deep fascination with faces and emotions. Expressing depths of character – whether it is of anger, love, sadness, joy or surprise – is something Danny has often depicted in his works. He primarily paints but also draws in both pencil and charcoal, and sculpts. Danny considers himself as an abstract expressionist. In many of his works he has produced shapes and figures that are not always initially obvious to the viewer but which later become clearly discernible. He is often asked to carry out commissioned pieces for private clients, both small and large-scale projects. As an upcoming artist on the local scene, his prices are extremely attractive for a budding art lover. The paintings featured here are approximately one metre by 120 centimetres. To find out more about Danny Verno Smith’s work, you can email him on vernarts@outlook.com or call (+34) 658 150 018.

Round-up of business, charity, cultural and other general items of interest from the Costa del Sol, Gibraltar… and further afield BoConcept
Colour Control… and Soft and Round Looking ahead to 2016, BoConcept has outlined two key trends that will be taking centre stage. First, the renowned brand advocates botanic tones and a more controlled use of colour. “Colours inspired by nature – the golden nuances of amber, the grassy freshness of olive oil, the paleness of lichen growing on a boulder – will be a key trend going forward. The key to seamlessly incorporating them into the home is control. Instead of adding a vibrant grass green, turn the volume down and try sage instead – the result will be much more sophisticated. Once the colour of the space is in balance, there is much more room for experimentation with form and materials.” BoConcept also forecasts a strong focus on organic shapes, sensuous textures and soft shades for 2016. “Curves will be key – whether the graceful arch of a chair back, the gentle swirls on a piece of glass art or the controlled flow of a vase. Softened corners balance the straight lines and sharp edges of the modern home. Dusty colours and warm pastels reflect a sense of ease and comfort – luxurious cream, earthy terracotta and gentle grey. Reachout-and- touch textures like marble, felt, leather and fur enrich the senses. The balance of feminine and masculine, as in the round form of a concrete bowl, creates visual excitement.” Fuengirola-Mijas Road, Km. 3.5 Tel. ADVICE
Company Tax in Spain Losses from Previous Fiscal Years Article supplied by Arcos & Lamers Asociados
The time limit for compensating negative company tax bases in Spain, generated by losses from previous years, has been changed drastically with the introduction of law 27/2014. These tax bases will be applied without any time limit in the future. In other words, negative tax bases generated since 1997 may be compensated from now onwards. Congratulations! There is a quantity limit of 70 per cent of the tax base prior to compensation. However, a compensation of 100 per cent is allowed if the minimum amount is €1 million. It is important to be able to provide the tax office with certain accountancy documents, such as: • Issued invoices • Received invoices • Bank extracts and payment receipts This is because administration authorities have a period of 10 years to verify if compensation of negative tax bases is applicable or not.
138
In order to avoid the purchase of non-active companies or quasi non-active companies with negative tax bases, a series of limitations is being registered, and these must be taken into account. Negative tax bases cannot be taken into account at the time of the purchase if one of the following situations occurs: 1. No economic activity has been registered during the three months prior to the purchase. 2. The company will carry out a different or additional economic activity (from the previous one) in the two years after the purchase. 3. The company is an equity entity, the so-called “Entidad Patrimonial”. 4. The entity was deregistered from the entities’ registry due to not having filed a return during three consecutive tax periods.
